08/12/2006 Entry: "August Megaparty #12: Great White Ice Pops!"

I've only seen a few ice cream trucks all summer. I have no idea why, but the lack of trucks has forced my hand: If I want cold treats sure to induce brainfreezes, I must consult my local grocer's freezer section. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but at least the grocer supplies me with ice pops named after sharks.

From Popsicle, it's "Great White," a brand of ice pops that challenges us to find any real connection to sharks outside of the box art. They're just white ice pops, plain-shaped, and they have nothing to do with sharks unless you really use your imagination to give them a gray/white gradient, fins, eyes, gills, a tail, jaws and a bad attitude. Whatever, the box says they're sharks, and I'm more than happy to suspend disbelief if it's going to let me think I'm sucking on sharks.

The box says they're colorless, but they're not so much colorless as they are "not-dyed." Being not-dyed means that Popsicle can promote them as a "no mess" affair, much in the same way later incarnations of Hi-C Ecto-Cooler did away with our holy green in favor of a fruit juice that wouldn't stain the rug. I'm okay with the lack of color in this case; for one, a shark-inspired ice pop feels on-brand in white, and for two, at least I can eat the things without looking like a prison bitch afterwards. That shit stops being cute when you're too old to skirt the swift hand of justice with a Juvie sentence.

Aside from the usual collection of fun fruity flavors, some of the Great White pops are "mystery flavors." I'm all about mystery flavors, even when they suck. The gimmick was taught to me by Dum-Dum lollipops, and I've loved it ever since. Sometimes, "mystery flavors" are scams -- they're just the normally included flavors under a different label. Here, they're more special. The normal Great White flavors are cherry and orange, but the mystery flavor can be green apple, pineapple, watermelon or lemonade. There's more mystery flavors than regular flavors! I LOVE SHARKS!

Score one point for Popsicle and two points for sharks at large. I'm proud of my Great White ice pops and I can't wait to buy them birthday presents.

Oh, and this doubles as the Saturday Night Thread. For those new to the site, or to those who haven't been paying close attention, the "SNT" is essentially a directionless babble lounge for all of us stuck indoors on Saturday nights. Don't be scared to participate if you're not a "regular," because nobody here has a complex about their tenure, and everyone is totally welcoming of new faces (or names, I guess). I look at it like this: If you're just mindlessly browsing various sites for hours, the SNT makes a great pit stop throughout the day/night for those small bits of INTERACTIVE FUN that will help keep you sane.

Well, wow. First post? =D
I'd like to pick up a box of that, not for anything aside from the mystery flavors.
I'm tired of having only those fourth of july themed, red white and blue, cherry lemon and blue raspberry ice pops.

I don't know if I like the whole "no mess" thing. I keep picturing some poor kid who's world is all colorless because everything from his Hi-C to his popsicles and crayola color magic stuff is clear. Poor kid.

Those do look good though.

Also just tried Pepsi Jazz Black Cherry and French Vanilla, tastes a lot like Vanilla Coke to me.

Thanks again Matt, keep up the awesomeness.

Bluejeans: No, you are not the only one. I was up till 7am this morning on Wiki. Somehow I ended up going through a good portion of the DCU last night. It all started with me looking up a voice-over actor. He worked on Teen Titans, and boom, there I was reading about a gazillion DC Superheros I had never heard of.

The ice cream man just passed by! Missed him though.
So what did you think of Shark Week? Jobs That Bite was the most entertaining for me. The Giant Squid: Caught on Camera was neat as well but I think that technically wasn't Shark Week. I've only just now cleared my recorder of the last sharky programs.
Happy Saturday ever'body!

I haven't posted here since the madness that was the Nathan Bitner Blog a few years ago...Does anyone still remember that?? Anyway, Matts invitation was too much to resist, so here I am. Great White Sharks are vicious AND delicious.

Ah yes, Shark week, everyone's favorite time of the year. Shouldn't this be made a national holiday with all federal buildings taking monday off for "Great White Day." But then I think, hmmmm, that might get us into the whole, Racist white person holiday that some redneck made up, and thats no good for anyone.

those look good... reminds me of the "white mystery" flavor that AIRHEADS offers.

Chestnuts roasted by andrew @ 08/12/2006 04:52 PM EST

I used to work at a place at the beach that sold those pseudo ice cream kinds of things. The second least popular (and one of the best) of which were Great Whites.

They only came in "lemon ice" (so that's probably your mystery flavor) but they were shaped like a shark. Or a space shuttle. Something with a fin.

Chestnuts roasted by Katherine @ 08/12/2006 05:00 PM EST

Long time reader (I remember being sad when Liquorhead left!), first time blog commenter.

I absolutely adore those Great White pops. Granted, I'm incredibly partial to anything with a shark on the box regardless of whether the shark has a damn thing to do with the product itself, but Great Whites are pretty swell on their own. Not only do you escape the prison-bitch look Matt described, but I swear to God they're less syrup-y gooey than the dyed pops.

The only problem is they still have the generic wooden popsicle sticks! Those things make me gag, and call me OCD, but I don't even like the feel of them on my hands. I end up having to cut my pop off into a bowl to avoid the nasty dry wood in wet mouth experience, and that's not nearly as much fun as eating something with a handle.

Chestnuts roasted by monochrome @ 08/12/2006 05:28 PM EST

Is there a limit to how many URLs one can post? I dug up a bunch of links in an attempt to entertain, but I'm getting spam blocked. I'll try to get some through:

MST3K: The Movie on YouTube

Sinfest comic (links to a Transformers parody, but check out the archives)

Snakes On A Plane: Send a Message from Samuel L. Jackson (This has been posted already, but if you haven't done it yet you gotta do it now)

Info about seeing tonight's meteor shower

Ricky Gervais as David Brent in a Microsoft training video

If any of those are interesting, let me know, I'll try to dig up more like it.

AMC seems to be having a horror movie festival tonight of Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween Resserection.

Fox Movie Channel is showing "Shock Treatment" tonight. I love the original Rocky Horror and never seen the sequel.

Got back from seeing Barnyard. It's pretty good, but not as good as Cars or Over the Hedge.

I got nothing to say about sharks, popsicles, or mystery flavors.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 08/12/2006 05:34 PM EST

What AMC's doing is as close to Shocktober as I've seen lately. They've even got funky montage promos and everything.

JLA: Shock Treatment is a real confusing movie and it takes several viewings to make sense of it. Great songs, though, and lots of repeat actors from RHPS.

I'm not liking this whole "5 link limit" as I just spent eleven hours finding and compiling 6 of them... Oh well, I shall struggle

This will be a slightly long post and possibly, due to forces beyond my control, all my careful structuring and layering and usage of the "enter" key to separate things will be for naught and it will all be crunched together. Regardless, this is a great way to kill an afternoon X-E style, with a great sextology or something... what do you call a trilogy plus three?

Man, it's nice to be at an SNT again- it's been awhile. I really am living out of my car, spending every night at a different friend's house. It is awesome- we have a cooler in the trunk with food and drinks, plus a tent, sleeping bag, camping chairs, radio, etc etc. Anything you can think of really- we got it. I am loving this eternal road tripping, rent-free summer. I do miss the internet though.

Thanks Matt- I want a great white popsicle very very badly now. Any popsicle would do, I suppose- but I like that 'no mess' idea myself.

Squee- thanks for the info on the meteor shower! I hope I get some action ;0)

I went to Toys R Us today...I barely escaped without blowing a hundred bucks. My friend dragged me out. Thank god for him. Although, the 'build your own lightsaber' kit was on SALE dammit!

Ah yes, I've seen those shark pops in several stores in the South Jersey area, though I'm not sure if them have them at the one I currently work at. I'm not a huge popsickle fan, anyway. I like my frozen bars with cream or ice cream or fruit; something a bit more substancial.

Matt, I've been a follower of the site for a while now but never posted. I know you live in Jersey, and I was wondering exactly where? I think you're close to me,

Anyway, as for the lack of ice cream trucks? Not possible. Why? Because I drive one. Little Jimmy's it a distributor of ices and ice cream, with Weaser's and Good Humor as our competition. So when I'm on the road, I see many, many ice cream/ices trucks.

As for these sharks, we get asked for them all the time but never have them I guess their the latest craze in kinder-dining.

We actually have TWO ice cream trucks that come around here, but they can be hard to catch. We have Mr. Softee and Angels on Wheels which I think is really really local.

But I have an interesting story that's worthy of SNT. There's this girl named Sarah I work with that's over on the other side of the call center. One time I was in the bathroom taking a piss and she's in the handicap stall next to me doing her business and talking on her cel phone and oohing and ahhing over some friend of hers. Strange girl. Anyway, I've recently come to find out that this girl was actually one of the winners from The Biggest Loser.

Kinda weird, huh?

On the topic of Mystery Flavors, I too love the Airheads variety of it. It's practically my favorite one, aside from the Limited flavor of Cotton Candy, which was truly the greatest Airhead flavor ever.

And on the Wiki topic, I've been doing that today too. Ever since around 3 this afternoon, my adventure actually started at Television Without Pity's message board, and I went to the Wikipedia article to The Fuehrer's Face (the Donald Duck cartoon I linked to yesterday), and then I went to Academy Award Winners (it got the Oscar in 1943), then to Cecil B. DeMille's page, then to Alfalfa's page (they died on the same day), then went to the page of the cemetary where Alfalfa's buried. And then I went to the list of famous cemetaries in the US, then finally went to the page for Captree State park here on LI.

I went to that page around 8:30pm.

Here's a topic: In Wikipedia searching, what was the most random article you found while looking at the page you originally searching for by only clicking the links in the page? And did you ever do it enough times and wind up at the original article you started at?

dohopoki-
Those Intellivision things are crap. The reason you're thinking that Intellivision games aren't as good as you remember is that the plug and play unit is really a plug and play NES,just like they all (except Atari FB2 and the Genesis ones) are. The games are just sloppy half-assed remakes of the originals. Grant you most Intellivision titles do suck, but Space Armada and Astrosmash FTW!

He was in a van with the side door cut out. No kidding. No signs, no music, just a blue van with the side cut out. They had decided that their baby would not be buying ice cream from him. He did sort of resemble the comic book guy from "The Simpsons", and not in a good way.

Josh and Terror Claws: That's awesome.

Anyway, I just got done watching "Shock Treatment." It's an interesting movie, but it does lack the charm and memorable songs of RHPS. I will admit I was fooled both Farley Flavors and Brad were both played by the same actor. Plus, the movie's ending felt rushed, like it was like "It's been 90 minutes, let's wrap it up quickly."

Saw the "House of Wax" remake last night on HBO. If you can get past the first incredibly slow 45 minutes, it's actually a fun little horror flick. The deaths were inventive, Paris Hilton was adequate as the sexy shrieking blonde, and the ending was incredibly cool with the melting house.

As long as you don't hold out on us for as long as HBO loves to. I know that the Sopranoness can't go very deep, but I'd love it if they had, like, Artie's face screened onto them, like the wrestler ice cream.
Earlier I clicked the link and reread the Venusaur quest and just about lost it at the Corey/Jessica Biel line. Just now I was flipping through Vanity Fair and came across some photos of her...She's still looking damn good, I must say.
Muppet Baby, that sounds like really amazing fun. Hope you get a good look at the meteor shower!
Welcome in everybody!

Here's how lame I am:
I bought a used X-Box today. I've never owned an X-Box before, and Halo 2 is pretty much the only game from its library I've ever played. I purchased the machine itself, 3 controllers, and 4 shitty games for $100. My plan is to spend the next two years or so perusing all the good shit that Microsoft's antiquated wonder-machine has to offer, and hopefully by the time I've exhausted all the X-Box's playability, the PS3's astronomical launch-price will have diminished somewhat. Hmmm...I guess all that doesn't really make me lame. It makes me a smart shopper.

I've never seen those popsicles, and now I want one, even though I know they would screw with my tastebuds. Kinda like Crystal Pepsi and those color changing Kool Aids.

Ohh, whoever was talking about the giant Squid thing, that was pretty cool. I'm surprised I actually remembered to watch it.

My buddy list is completely empty :'( so, I'll probably be hanging around until the wee morning hours, if not later. I need to stay up as late as possible so I can not be totally f'ed up when I go back to work Monday night at 9pm-6am. But I just got home, so that calls for a shower.

I think it's a testament to how awesome sharks are that Popsicle makes two kinds of shark-related pops. But I've always wondered why they didn't make the ones in the box shark-shaped when they obviously have the technology and are using it to make the single serves. Then again, the boxed ones got the cooler package art. I guess it's a trade-off.
Speaking of wikipedia, I was reading about great whites a few months ago and found my new favorite term - Apex predator. Ever since, I've been dreaming of buying and eating a great white pop and calling myself an apex predator while I'm at it. So lame and attainable, yet I'm too lazy to bother.

I hate mystery flavors. They were cool when I was younger. But know whenever I have a mystery flavor, or more particularly a myster flavor that's just an undyed regular flavor, I have no clue what I'm tasting and it ruins the entire experience for me, because I"m more concerned about figuring out what flavor it is then actually enjoying it.

I've been glued to the AMC marathon pretty much all night. Last night they aired House I & II. Haven't viewed Elm Street in a while. Nancy's rigging the house now.

Most of all, I had to tune in because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also came on tonight and I couldn't pass up seeing Wonka's blood hit the ceiling.

Charlie's a good movie, but Wilder is forever Wonka!

Did you guys see the new Monopoly that's coming out? :\ They don't have money - they have credit cards. It'd be cool to try, but NEVER will it take the place of having 4 billion $500's piled up while the rest of the players write up IOU's. smile

House 2 is NOTHING like the first one. It takes some patience, but it's really good in its own special way, and the cast of characters includes a zombie grandfather and a caterpillar/dog hybrid.

I love Wilder's Wonka. One thing that always bugged me about that movie is how, in the beginning, the guy at the candy store is literally throwing free candy at everyone, letting the kids take anything, and Charlie's just pressing his face against the glass looking like he'd love to be in there, but he's too poor. Hello, he's giving the stuff away, Charlie! I had to get that off my chest, it's been bothering me for entirely too long.

hehe, yes. I think it's only available in the UK for now, but I'm sure we'll get it eventually. They have a little calculator looking thing that keeps track of how much you have or don't have. You stick your card in the side of it and I guess it reads it somehow.

After reading various parts of the wikipedia article for Darkwing Duck, I am struck by what I had found: there were a number of inside jokes and references in various episodes that would've gone over the heads of the target audience. I think those of us who watched it as kids may find a new appreciation for it when it comes to DVD. I can only hope, for now.

Any "Freeway" fans out there? Anyone seen "Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby"? I just saw the "sequel" last night for the first time. It's completley unrelated to the first one except:

1. Only one actor appeared in both movies, but as two different characters.

2. Same director.

3. At one point, someone watches TV, and the camera shows that "Freeway" is on the screen. Nothing mentioned about it in the plot. So maybe the dir. put it there for shits and giggles. smile

Who's "Keno" in TMNT? I'm not sure if I could come up with 10 of the best non Turtle heroes, but I do know Leatherhead would be my #2 right after Casey. I guess April is number three, but I only really liked her in the comics, around the time Casey accidently killed that kid. It seemed like they were really fleshing out April, but I only really haphazadly followed Turtles around that time,so I don't know how it turned out. Oh,and I liked how her action figure had a realistic .45! That was so cool because the TMNT's world had all these badasses in it,and the girl reporter's the only person with a gun.

MOVIE ALERT:
For all you Megapartiers who have Comcast Digital Cable, one of the FREE On Demand movie choices available right now is "It Came From Beneath the Sea". This is an AWESOME giant octopus movie from the 50's. The special effects are by Ray Harryhausen (Clash of the Titans stop-motion guy) but they look way better than "Clash".

Kid Nicky,
Keno is the ass-kicking pizza delivery boy from "Secret of the Ooze", a thoroughly forgettable character seeing as how he has to vie for screen time alongside Vanilla Ice and ten-foot-tall bipedal wolves.

Speaking of Keno, I knew this guy a LONG time ago, a few years after TMNT 2 came out who was a belt belt or whatever. He actually did karate touraments with the guy who played Keno, and, according to him, he is the biggest pansy ever. I guess ol' Keno just wasn't that great, and also complained and cried after losing. He apparently thought he was cool because he did movies. I'm pretty sure he was in The Last Dragon as a little kid, so maybe his ego was out of control from that. Still, unless you are SHO' NUFF then you shouldn't be acting all badass. Or Bruce Leroy, because he had "The Glow" and all.

Terror Claws, I have to defend Clerks 2. Sure, beastiality is a disgusting crime against nature. But being that it's a movie, and fiction, and being such a ridiculous scene in the first place, is what makes it a joke...

And if you've no problem with the first Clerks, yet such a larger one with 2; yes it has a pretty sick "donkey show gone too far," but the first one has a girl screwing an elderly man's corpse in the back of a seedy convenient store, and then shown the beginnings of the psychological trauma. I've been a Smith fan for years upon years, so I'm bias, of course.

Everyone has their "thing" I guess...

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/13/2006 10:41 PM EST

Well colonel, he was answering the question from my view, going with dad. Like I said the first one really came close to being to much of something we wouldn't want to know each other watched and for 2 I didn't know if it were a "Kevin Smith sold out and tamed it down" or a "Kevin Smith sold out and went too far" type deal. Bestiality was not going to be the discussion on the long trip home.

We didn't go to anything.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/13/2006 11:02 PM EST

Well that's what I was trying to get around to. And your question was concerned towards the ride home.

How bad you ask? One word for ya buddy: bestiality.

Compared to the first one? That was all my point was. So sure, no better than the first, as far as that goes. But how, may I ask, did Kevin Smith sell out?

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/13/2006 11:14 PM EST

Well the big difference between the two scenes in Clerks is that while we were told about the girl/corpse in Clerks, we never actually saw anything, in Clerks 2 we actually saw the donkey scene. I cringed during the donkey scene, but was ok with everything in Clerks 1.
