I always liked Gizmo Duck.

Wow, I never thought I'd get this question. It's a tough one. I might have to go with the ugly duckling (specifically the one from the later Disney cartoon.) I'm sure it will change after I read your responses.

I liked Daffy Duck back when he was completely insane. You just knew he was on something.

You were bound to tucker out sooner or later, Matt. No worries (haha, remember THAT) I'm just surprised you've juggled your job and home life and still entertaining us everyday.

Darkwing Duck.

Let's get dangerous...

Got to be the chickens out of the muppet show for me

Chestnuts roasted by Jasper Crank @ 08/11/2006 11:10 PM EST

My favorite specific cartoon with a duck in it is the one in which Donald Duck has a huge snow battle with Huey, Dewey and Louie. He's so great at spazzing, then at the end, just as his ship breaks down he says "Oh my goodness, what is this?" so genuine. He can't hide his emotions, that's what I love about him.
But I'll always have a special place in my heart for Count Duckula.

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 08/11/2006 11:12 PM EST

Well....when I was kindergarden age I was particularly fond of Darkwing Duck. So much so that my mother had to order a stuffed animal of him from Disney Land or something. And I remember my aunt taking my to Toys R Us and buying me some odd Darkwin Duck motorcycle...or gun. Something like that. I was an odd child.
Still, looking back, I don't know what the appeal was. And recently I learned my mother ordered the DVDs for me for my birthday. I guess I'll have to renew my faith.

Chestnuts roasted by Denise @ 08/11/2006 11:14 PM EST

Darkwing Duck, definitely.

Keeping with the theme of the evening, Victory Golden Monkey...mmmm, Monkey....

Chestnuts roasted by The Greatest Gatsby @ 08/11/2006 11:15 PM EST

Ahhh, I misinterpreted "plowed" I usually just use the verbs "tanked" or "bombed" NOT tuckered!

And even though my first day at my new job is for some fucking reason TOMORROW AT 9am, the bar's open until 2. I wouldn't be me showing up all cleary-eyed and shit.

Maybe, if consciousness permits, I can jump back here and go on tangents of DW. Good pick, Frito.

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/11/2006 11:15 PM EST

I guess I'll go with Daffy. He's classic. Although the duck always seems to be the sideshow, not the main act. Why am I answering this, I would rather be drinking...

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 08/11/2006 11:17 PM EST

Gracias, Colonel!

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 08/11/2006 11:18 PM EST

Either Daffy, Darkwing or Duckula. It's so hard to choose, all the great cartoon roles go to ducks. I'm not sure why.

Chestnuts roasted by Doctor Who @ 08/11/2006 11:18 PM EST

I'm big on the Disney ducks -- Donald leads because he should, but I dig on all Disney ducks.

I mentioned Ace Duck because I love him too. Psyduck, he counts. Also fond of the piano-playing chicken Rose thought Sophia's sister killed and cooked. And, of course, any chickens who star in their own Chicken Machines.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/11/2006 11:20 PM EST

I've always been a fan of the terror that flaps in the night. but Gizmo rocks my world two.... Who would win in a fight... Darkwing or Gizmo? And if Launchpad showed up where would his loyalties lie? to Darkwing or to the Ducktales charector?

Chestnuts roasted by Neo Anderson @ 08/11/2006 11:20 PM EST

I definitly think that "Launchpad" was one of the better comic-relief-sidekick ducks of the disney afternoon when (most of us) were kids.

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 08/11/2006 11:22 PM EST

I'd definately have to list Darking as #1 for obvious reasons. After that I might just have to go with Howard the Duck. God I love that movie.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 08/11/2006 11:23 PM EST

I may be the only one, but my favorite cult movie of all time is Howard the Duck. In fact there's not a fowl I hate:

SNL's Cluckin Chicken
San Diego Chicken
Disco Duck
Daffy
Ducktales
Big Bird
Darkwing Duck
Count Duckula

Never watched Rocka Doodle though. Plus, although this will probably put me on the X-E banned list, I can't stand to eat more than one Peep in a sitting.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 08/11/2006 11:29 PM EST

I don't know if it counts or not, but for some reason I'm damn fond of the Burger King chicken commercials with the "Big Buckin' Chicken" song. Makes me laugh everytime.

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 08/11/2006 11:34 PM EST

Cheers man! Tequila rules for me! Although I am still not wasted yet! See, Matt, I can still type!
I am not really crazy about any of the ducks... I was thinking of mentioning Chicken Run and then I remembered they were Chickens not DUCKS! Okay, so yes maybe I have had a few shots! But I can still type! HA! Back at ya!

Chestnuts roasted by two fingers @ 08/11/2006 11:34 PM EST

Deadeye Duck from Bucky O'Hare was my favorite. On the series he was much more of a fighting guy than any of the others.

Of course, the show did not last long simply because the average viewer was incapable of handling a complex plot with lots of details.

Chestnuts roasted by mjf7583 @ 08/11/2006 11:35 PM EST

Oh damn! Now I have reread the post and you mentioned FOWL so CHICKEN RUN it is. Don't know why maybe it is all the Mel Gibson hoopla and tequila!

Well, since the woman's FINALLY on her way over here so we can FINALLY head out to get plastered, I have some time to kill, so my vote, aside from DW:

Launchpad was a role model for me growing up. And I thought it to be the coolest thing ever when he made the transition from Ducktales to, not only Darkwing Duck, but then eventually to Tailspin as well.

Gizmoduck was another fave too. I couldn't grasp the physics of a duck running around on just one wheel.

Dammit, someone help me remember his catchphrase when he wanted to change into Gizmo...

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/11/2006 11:41 PM EST

that's any kind of bird, right? outside of the Disney ducks, I like Woodstock.

I'm surprised that no one has at least mentioned Howard the Duck; or Quackor The Fowl.

I had completely forgotten about the chicken machine until you posted a link! I seriously remember one of those from when I was like five years old. I never would have remembered something as random as that...

As for my favorite ducks, I'd have to go with Huey, Dewey and Louie because what can I say, I was a little girl watching Disney movies and I thought they were cute. I guess I don't have much exposure to animated ducks.. But I am pretty fond of the chicken-Muppets. =) And the chickens from some old Zelda game I have that attack you when you pick up one of it's brethren. I always thought that was funny. =)

I'd have to say Donald Duck. If I went gay for any waterfowl, it would be for him.

Does Launchpad count as a Duck? or is he a Seagull or Pelican?

Chestnuts roasted by Joker @ 08/12/2006 12:25 AM EST

Probably Uncle Scrooge for me, simple because of the gargantuan influence that Duck Tales was on my childhood. All of Disney duckdom is great, though. I love Carl Barks.

Howard the Duck is awesome too. I hate to be one of those people, but the movie just doesn't do justice to how cool Howard is.

I remember this one story where he fought the Hellcow, a cow-turned-vampire after being bitten by Dracula. I think it was in an issue of Giant-Size Man Thing, too, which is the greatest title for anything ever.

I love both Daffy and Donald (especially together in the Ink and Paint Club sequence in Roger Rabbit). I actually tend to enjoy any toon characters with anger management issues...I have a special affinity for Daffy because of the fact that he obviously represents the brother man, while Bugs is a manifestation of white priviledge (half joking here).
Darkwing and Duckula and McDuck were childhood favorites but they haven't done much for me lately.
Scuttle! Nobody's mentioned him yet?!? How about Ping, the last little duckling who always got paddled (books count, right)? The Trumpeter Swan, and the Goose from Charlotte's Web. Can't think of any more now.

Dang, 25 comments down and all the good ones were said already.

But 2 no one said yet:

-The Robot Chicken from Robot Chicken
-Superchicken

And click here :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQruczadBfc for a very Infamous WWII cartoon starring Donald Duck. It won an oscar, has a catchy song, and very well made.

And oh ya, Donald says "Heil Hitler" about 25 times in the span of 8 minutes.

Chestnuts roasted by InvaderNorbert @ 08/12/2006 01:18 AM EST

Obviously, I mean OBVIOUSLY, the best fowl ever was TOILET DUCK. The tank, the airplane, the "whenh, whenh" sound he made... And he tasted pretty good, too.

Chestnuts roasted by D-d-davesome @ 08/12/2006 01:28 AM EST

I'd have to say....ROck a Doodle, Wade the duck from the US acres cartoon that was on Garfield and friends saturday morning show.

and that little baby duck from Tom and Jerry

Ducktales is my longstanding favorite cartoon....although if you ask me tomorrow I may answer the 80s transformers....that being said I have to give the nod to my main man scrooge. Since he seems to be the popular choice Ill throw out a three way tie for second (all from Ducktales due to my bias):

Doofus
Bubba
Flintheart Glumgold

Cheers all...enjoy your drinks

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 08/12/2006 01:46 AM EST

how has no one picked ace duck?

if the name doesnt ring a bell, you will probably still recall who he was. he was the sometime blimp driver for the ninja turtles. he wore an amazing bomber jacket, and was the only good guy (that i can recall) who carried a gun.

i got his action figure when i was a lad, and it somehow became one of the figures that played rather prominant roles in the battles between good and evil. he had removable wings, and when he got hit his wings would come off (battle damage!!).

oh ace duck!! where have you gone?

Chestnuts roasted by kevin. @ 08/12/2006 02:29 AM EST

Darkwing Duck has already been mentioned, but jeez, it just has to be him. Because remember, 'when there's trouble, you call D.W.!', so see...that has to count for something. Even Wolverine isn't that cocky to have a song penned about how he can hault any type of trouble.

Chestnuts roasted by Dino @ 08/12/2006 02:41 AM EST

Colonel Catsup, the phrase you're looking for is "Blathering Blatherskeit". (Blatherskeit meaning "nonsense", and was the password Gyro Gearloose - one of my picks for best fowl - chose when Scrooge told him to just pick some nonsense word.)

As for favorite fowl, well, in no particular order, Daffy, Donald, Scrooge, Super Chicken, Gyro Gearloose, Darkwing, Launchpad.

And as I'm a University of Oregon grad, I have to mention the UO's mascot, the Fighting Duck, the only college mascot to ever be allowed into Disneyland. (He was patterned after Donald, based on a handshake agreement in the 50s.)

Chestnuts roasted by Chaomancer Omega @ 08/12/2006 02:43 AM EST

I know this doesn't really fit in, but it falls under pop culturedom and I can't see the word "duck" this many times without thinking about it: Mighty Ducks. Not the cartoon, the movies. I have unreasonable amounts of love for those films.

Chestnuts roasted by dylan @ 08/12/2006 02:46 AM EST

Wade Duck was the reason for watching Garfield and Friends, aside from Garfield. I initially started watching it because it followed Pee Wee's Playhouse, but then it hit syndication, so I managed to see every episode after school. It was definitely the float he carried around, with the little duck head mimicking his emotions that caught me.

Damn you, Wade, the magic that you worked...

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/12/2006 02:48 AM EST

Chaomancer, God Bless You, even though I'm not a Christian. Your memory has struck a low cord in my heart. I've downloaded both ROMs of the Duck Tales games, gone through waiting for that bastard to say it, but he didn't.

I can finally sleep because of you.

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/12/2006 02:55 AM EST

Loved the site for quite a long time, so I figured to finally start posting.

To me it's a huge grouping of Ducks.

Wade Duck - Any duck that has some many phobias he has them listed in a file cabinet is A-Okay in my book.

Darkwing - Because I was obsessed with him.

Launchpad - Dude can barely fly and has the charm to stay heavily employed by someone like Scrooge.

Scrooge - Does he personafy hip-hop or what? No one get's between him and his money.

other forgotten ducks would be Mother Goose, The duck on Little Bear or Franklin, and of course the Mighty Ducks (The lame cartoon and not the amazing movies).

Chestnuts roasted by Ranger Joe @ 08/12/2006 03:12 AM EST

I have great fondness for the Disney Ducks as well, especially all involved with Duck Tales; I HATED when the school bus was late getting me home and I'd miss my daily dose of Duck Tales (say that 3 times fast!). Also, there was (or maybe still is?) this great buzzard at Six Flags over Georgia. I 'think' his name is Bufford Buzzurd and he was the coolest damn cat...er bird in the whole park.

Chestnuts roasted by Shaunfu @ 08/12/2006 03:35 AM EST

The Disney Afternoon was full of ducks through most of its run, and most of them ruled.

And as I'm a University of Oregon grad, I have to mention the UO's mascot, the Fighting Duck, the only college mascot to ever be allowed into Disneyland. (He was patterned after Donald, based on a handshake agreement in the 50s.)
I thought it WAS Donald. It looks exactly like his classic form. It was in a Disney trivia book that "the University of Oregon is the only college sports team allowed to have Donald Duck as its mascot."

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 08/12/2006 03:38 AM EST

Was Ace Duck ever actually ON the Ninja Turtles cartoon show?? I remember the figure well, but never recall actually seeing him on the show!

Chestnuts roasted by Jon @ 08/12/2006 04:11 AM EST

The first story my father ever read to me was one of his Uncle Scrooge comics. Carl Barks's ducks have had a great influence on my life, to the point where I was actually too much of a snob at age six to enjoy DuckTales. To this day, when you say the name I think of the NES game.

Recently I was reintroduced to Don Rosa's revisionist / reconstructive take on the Barks mythos. The sheer amount of history he worked into Uncle Scrooge's life is astounding; find his collection, it's worth it.

And yet, if I had to choose a favorite-- it would be Gyro Gearloose, because he had one of the best quotes of all time, one that greatly sums up my own life and probably yours: "I'll just look normal until nobody's looking!"

Chestnuts roasted by G'Tron @ 08/12/2006 05:25 AM EST

Hi, everyone! I can think of two "fowls of pop culturedom" yet unmentioned: Orville and Wilbur of "The Rescuers" and "The Rescuers Down Under," respectively. But for my personal favorite, there was little doubt in my head that it would be the terror that flaps in the night, the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares, the grade curve that gives you an "F," the bubble gum that clings to your shoe, the smelly old anchovy on the pizza of inequity, the spinach that sticks to your teeth, the cholesterol that clogs your arteries, the burned-out bulb you cannot reach, the meter on the cab of justice, the dog that relieves itself on the front lawn of crime... to paraphrase Larry the Cable Guy, I could do this all night.

I knew I was forgetting an important one! Gotta add Duckman to my list.Tim Curry's King Chicken is probably the only clucker I'd include. Also, Jemima Puddleduck and the family from Make Way For Ducklings. Mr. Popper's Penguins! Hedwig is pretty cool, but little Pidwigeon is my real fav. I wish he was mine. I wonder if Buckbeak can be counted as fowl. Ooh, how about the rummy stork that was always fucking up deliveries (Tom and Jerry)? I always felt bad for Wile E., but you gotta give props to the Roadrunner.
Seriously, reading Harry Potter there are lots of things I covet, but a tiny, spastic owl that delivers my messages is near the top.
There are still so many that haven't come up! I'm amazed. (I can't recall about Franklin, but Little Bear has the one actually named Duck).

Ben: I read through all the comments and feared the lack of love for Chicken Boo. He's one of my all time favorites.

Unfortunately, I must vote for the Goodfeathers. They were always the animated birds that stood out to me most in my childhood. Heck, my very first (and still used s/n) was/is GoodFeathers (I spelled it wrong the first time and have since added a space). They had spunk, comedic timing, they were cute and sassy, and they got to crap on a giant statue of Regis Philbin. What's not to love? ^_^

Shout outs to Feathers McGraw and Count Duckula, but my mad props go to Foghorn Leghorn - "I say, this boy's about as sharp as a bowlin' ball", "If the kid don't stop talking so much he'll get his tongue sunburned" and many other great quotes.

Also if we're going to take fowl in its wider sense, what about Iago from Aladdin?

yeah, DArth, i did a search after i posted, and saw that acticle. i wouldnt really call him an obsure figure though. essentially, if you were a figure from the first 4 series', then everyone and their mom had one.

in all honesty, i dont recall ace duck ever being on the show.

but i do distinctly remember ace being in the turtles 3 nintendo game. after you beat the surfing level, there is a cut-scene where ace duck picks them up in the blimp and takes them to the golden gate bridge. awesome! and in my mind, that was enough reason to justify a figure.

I think it would be cool if they remaid duck tails but give it a little more serious approach, make it more of an adventure were lauch pad is actually the tough body gaurd instead of being such an ass. Make Scrooge like the smart profeser and the boys the boys, each having his own talent and specialty. Think Jhonny quest!

The best duck ever is Ernie's rubber ducky. (Who, if you recall, is the one. He does, in fact, make bathtime lots of fun.)

My favorite fowl is the Gobbledygooker of course. Debuting by busting out of a giant egg? Brilliant. It's too bad the Red Rooster was gone by that point, Gooker had a natural money feud right there. The Gooker could probably get over on Smackdown if they brought him back. Heck, they have Great Khali, Boogeyman, and even brought back Tatanka, can't be any worse.

I don't know why, but I've always had a thing about cartoon ducks. Donald (and his extended family) and Daffy have long been my favorite cartoon characters. Foghorn Leghorn, LaunchPad McQuack (of "DuckTales" and "Darkwing Duck"wink, Iago of "Aladdin" (I use his "I'm so ticked off, I'm moulting!" line a lot), and Woody Woodpecker are also very high up on my list.

Oh, "Little Bear!" I used to love that. That cartoon was so cute. Duck could get a little annoying, but she was generally funny.

And let's not leave out the entire cast of "Chicken Run!"

Soooo late to the party, but I *MUST* add Heckle and Jekyl and Chilly Willy.

Oh, and a grudging nod to Tweety Bird.

What ever happened to Heckly and Jekyl?

I would have to say my favorite would be an incantation of Daffy, Duck Dodgers. Especially the original cartoons with him in them, although i must say the new cartoon series is entertaining as well. If someone's already mentioned Duck Dodgers, then mark this one up as a supporting comment.

I was a HUGE HUGE darkwing fan in my youth (at 27 I still am kids!) but why did we stop at just the terror that flaps? much like the oddball james bond villins, DW had his mighty muscles of maximum might tested by the likes of Steelbeak, Dr. Bushroot, crackerjack, and while his saucy gf Morgana was a bad seed to start she became his hot to trot girlfriend later (DW's I mean) and Last of all How dare you all forget the awesomeness that was...NEGADUCK?!?

Deadeye Duck from Bucky O'Hare - one of the shows you suddenly remember because it shows up on YouTube and then bugging your significant other to get the DVDs for you. And she does.

I'm such a dork.
