Reason for the mystery picture's mysteriousness: After many years of fine service, my cell phone's camera now only takes pictures that look like a surveillance screen on a busted Russian sub. Oh well, I needed a new phone anyway. I'll buy a Razr, add some tufts of faux brown fur onto the case and puppet it around town to ask other phones where Tokka is.
I know there are a few people who hate the site in October due to a lack of affection for Halloween, but for the most part, we're all holiday junkies here. But, while it's awesome to see pumpkins and ghouls alongside inflatable pools and sunglasses, it's definitely too early for this. By the time October rolls around, everything in stores will seem old hat, and by the time mid October rolls around, everything in stores will look like Santa Claus. At least, that's my theory based on doing the Halloween Countdown for all these years. By the time the calendar smacks 10/20, it feels like store chains are totally about Christmas and totally over Halloween. It sucks, because we the public look to store chains for direction in our life. It's hard to celebrate a holiday when they're already celebrating the next holiday.
On the other hand, I'm really stoked to have orange and black M&M's with little pumpkin faces on them. In August. Especially when they're peanut butter M&M's, and especially when they're peanut butter M&M's that come in bags featuring M&M's dressed as Dracula.
This is your Saturday Night Thread.

It makes it less special when they start over two months ahead of time.

And I picked up a bag of those new Icy Burst Starbursts. My review: They're GOOD...not to mention addicting and the ability to actually cool off your mouth.

So, I know this is the place for good laughs, funny stories and all around cheer, but sometimes, you need an outlet.
So my girlfriend of 3 years and I broke up. She was younger. I'm a male and as such, we say and do stupid things. I didn't cheat, I was just a typical selfish male. So, she wasn't happy, she hadn't been in a while, I'm just not the person she needs me to be. don't know why. Wish I was. Best she be happy with someone else than miserable with me. It sucks, but you can't make people do what they don't want to and she's too young to be living in such an unhappy relationship. So now, I've lost a good friend, that I've known for 8 years and dated for 3. So it's like a double donkey punch to the back of the head.
As a male, a Latin male in particular, I'm not allowed to cry, as much as I'd like to, my pride gets in the way, and I'd probably anger my ancestors. So here I am, wanting to get it out, but I can't, other than writing this stupid entry and spreading my misery to everyone else and not really knowing where I'm going with it.
God, I could use some cheering up right about now.

Definitely a holiday junkie, but there are plenty of things that I never would have aquired affection for if not for site featurage (tiny jars of slime spring to mind first)...What I'm trying to say is screw the naysayers, maybe they'll even come around someday.

Darth Galv, I don't have much in the way of wise, comforting words, but I know that this place and these people have been an amazing support group for me through various trials and tribulations. The breakup of a long-term relationship is so fucking hard, I know, it's so painful and it clouds your vision so completely that you can't see anything beyond the fact that the thing that has been constant in your life for so many years is just suddenly dead...and even if the breakup was a long time coming and you know it has to be, it's still sudden. Lord, I'm having flashbacks. Hang in, it will probably get worse before it gets better, unfortunately, but they say time heals all. Good luck

I like Halloween. It's fun to dress up, hand out the candy and see displays of pumpkins and such. But I LOVE Thanksgiving and Christmas, mostly Christmas. And really only Thanksgiving 'cause it makes me feel OK about having the Christmas stuff already on display. However, I too, am enjoying Halloween more now that there's gonna be a month long celebration involving candy and goopy stuff.

Darth Galvatron I've never had to deal with a major breakup but I've had really good friends have to move before and they up and left without a relationship afterwards. I know that's not the same. I am a lesbian, so I couldn't say if I knew ya I would sleep with ya but maybe somebody could say that to cheer you up
Have a fest of doing shit she used to hate! Like umm, leaving the towel on the bathroom floor and eating a few bites of ice cream straight out of the carton and then putting it back!! Yeah that would cheer me up. Enjoy being single with all of that Latin love flowing through you. I hope that helps.

I've done nothing but think about Halloween all week. I eat, sleep, and breathe candy corn and orange trash bags full of leaves printed with jack-o-lantern faces. Or I would if I could. You're not supposed to eat bags, they're a choking hazard. I've also been sending really stupid emails with lines like "It's only 3 months till Halloween, do you know where your ghouls are?!?!" And while I support myself being excited about Halloween early, I don't think I like the idea of stores putting their stuff out in August. For the peanut butter m&m's though, I could maybe make an exception.
squee - I caught the project runway squid without an ocean thing. Easily my favorite part of the episode.
Darth Galvatron - Sorry to hear about that, and sorry I can't really say anything useful except that I hope it gets better soon. If Halloween's arrival in August cheers you up at all, I'm willing to forget what I said and support the idea.

I'm all about holiday stuff and all, but I feel if it comes out to early I get annoyed by it all and I just want the holiday to be over with. This is why I'm happy that I dont go shopping in department stores very often, I dont have to see all this stuff too early.
The other day I was in Zellers and I saw where the back to school stuff was and tt was empty, it made me wonder has everything already been bought out, or are they just starting to stock up? This is what happends when you dont go out, your out of the loop.
Darth G, I'm really sorry, breaking up and having to lose a friend too is really hard. I've done it and it's not easy at all, you will get through it I promise. Yah, know what? Crying helps no matter if your a girl or a guy, so do it if you need to.

The only bad thing about this advanced Halloween, aside from it being entirely too damn early, is that by the time I get my ass out to even consider my costume, most everything has been picked through or damaged, with the lamest products the only things left on any shelf. But that's my fault, I guess. I always wait till the last minute, or choose a costume that only requires me to buy a few choice things to later be combined with stuff I already have laying around.
Or one could just get some liquid latex and blood gel. You can do anything with liquid latex and blood gel.

Yell how Crassmonkey turned her against you, and use such Shakespearian dialogue as, “If you’re not my friend, then you’re my enemy”. Also you need to be tougher on the Stormtroopers, try defecating in their mouths. Other than that, keep up the good work.
In regards to the candy, no, no no no! Next thing you know they’ll be showing horror movies in July and the two Easter related cartoons ever made, which were probably animated by some group of Grandmothers who were locked in an attic and wouldn’t get their medicine if they didn’t finish that one last cell with super Jesus bitch slapping Judas, during October.

I am an editor at my local newspaper, and though school starts in about two weeks, I cannot get into the mood to begin working on back to school advertising and stories, though we have begun.
Halloween is a totally different story. I wish it were a bigger holiday in my town, but many of the kids no longer trick or treat at homes. Instead, local businesses now provide the candy the day before Halloween from the hours of 5-8pm. This is the extent of Haloween candy grabbing for the majority of kids in this town.
To top it off, the newspaper does nothing special for Halloween. We do no special stories, inserts or advertising. It is a forgotten holiday since Christmas is so close and we can make more advertising revenue from Santa's Birthday.

I absolutely LOVE halloween, lately ive been thinking about it, yes including what im going to be, three months in advance, and im starting to wonder if i love halloween more than christmas. Thats sacreglious isnt it? I think i like it more because its all fun and no pressure, like with christmas you have to worry about what to buy everyone and if they will like it, and being a college student with no source of income buying gifts isnt always easy...haha then again maybe im just selfish and i like halloween because its all about getting stuff and not about giving. Geez Im horrible.
On another note, Darth G, hang in there, cry if you want, come on X-E and read funny things that matt says, listen to sad songs, or angry songs, wallow in the depths of your despair for awhile. And this will sound really lame but, take it one day at a time, each day as it comes. slowly it will get better. And also this is the time when you need your friends the most, go out and do stuff just so you dont think about it all for awhile. I dont know if any of this helps at all, but ive been there (broken up with a boyfriend who also used to be my BEST friend). Darth Galvatron, I can totally relate. My boyfriend of three years broke up with me about three years ago (must be a pattern...) and I was just as upset. He didn't even tell me in person. He sent me an E-MAIL. Three years together, and he sent me an e-mail to tell me he didn't want to go any further with the relationship. I'm lucky I was visiting my mom's house; she was in the room when I checked my e-mail and I cried on her shoulder.
It's WAY too early to be thinking of Halloween. I'll think fall when Mother Nature stops throwing 100 degree heat waves at us every other week. They haven't even put out the Halloween candy in the grocery store where I work yet. (And they DID wait to put the school stuff out until mid-July.)
That said, Peanut Butter M&Ms rock, and Halloween just makes it better. Little bits of candy-coated chocolate are more fun when they're holiday-themed.

I asked my manager Dave if there was way that employees of the store could buy the candy early. He said it was possible, asking if I wanted to buy something. I grinned quite a bit, saying that I didn't at the moment but that I would think about it. Now, with this motivation Mr-X has granted me, I will get early pictures of this new candy!

I for one cannot wait for the Halloween Countdown. It's one of my favorite things about the site (well along with all the cool 80's toys and cartoon articles) and it gets me excited for a Holiday that I basically really have no use for anymore since I'm too old to go out. My wife and I did have a Halloween party last year, so that was good. We're thinking of doing that Halloween stuff that Six Flags Great Adventure does every year. Anyone know if that's any good?
Chestnuts roasted by Bob @ 08/06/2006 02:59 AM EST
Tony Johnson you're the editor, man! Can't you just start randomly inserting halloween stuff of your own on the front page? Just make the front cover a single big ass photograph of Maria from Sesame Street when she dressed up as dracula that one time. You're the boss man, it's time people started realising it.
Halloween is practically ignored here in the UK. Oh sure, we make polite nods in its direction - we're British, after all - but no-one really embraces it like they ought to. Except me, that is. I use it as an excuse to go from house to house killing the occupants and eating their souls.
But in a lighthearted way, obviously.

I'm pretty big on Halloween, which is probably due to deprivation and my childhood fascination with the US of A.
Halloween just isn't done in Australia. I used to beg my parents to let me dress up and go trick or treating. On the rare years that they allowed it, our neighbours' responses ranged from bemused to downright hostile.
I've noticed that there's been a lot more trick or treating going on down here in recent years, but it's mostly teenagers doing it for a lark.
I've been thinking of throwing a Halloween party this year, but I dunno if any of my friends would come. Maybe I'll just stay home for a Ghostbusters-Thriller-Garfield Halloween Special marathon.

Don't worry Lulu, I still play tuba! Although I do also play guitar, so maybe it cancels that out, and I'm a musical null point.

Aaron: "Funny, I work at Hy-Vee, which is a store only located in Iowa"
We have them in Nebraska too bud. All over the place in fact, and they are always the BEST place to buy hard alcohol because they sell the good stuff cheaper than everyone else, and if you want crappy vodka, then you can get it for like $1/gallon.
Baz: I am am the editor with less time at the job. My co-worker has been there 25 years and is the managing editor. There are only two actualy journalists: him and me, and I have been there now a whopping 10 months, so I can make changes, but not drastic ones. At least not yet!

might as well get excited for halloween since I don't get going back to school(well the first week or so) to get exited about and my hometowns annual community party was Laaaaaame.
Normaly we have a street dance that as a kid had a certain dangerous edge to it because my parents always made me go home but since I've turned 21 its gotten lamer and lamer. This year instead of it being free on the street, they where charging a cover to get into a tent. We went bar hopping instead and ate carny food. Of course there is only 4 bars in my hometown and one was overflowing with bikers and the other had a cover so we just hopped two bars which isn't as exiting.

Some of my neighboring towns celebrate with Halloween parades. I only ever went once because my Girl Scout Troop was in the parade. MY town doesn't have any good parties or anything, but we DO have two full nights of Trick-or-Treat. So if you find a good house, you can hit it again the next night.

Wow, you guys are pretty fucking awesome. Who knewa bunch of strengers could be so sympathetic.
I appreciate all the encouragement and funny comments. I did take gramsci's advice and do the vodka thing. That's why it's 12:30 and I just woke up. I also did the listening to sad music thing, which kind of makes things a little worse, but what the hell. I think I'm entitled to a few moments of brief depression. At least I'm not a sloppy or emotional drunk. I just tend to tell funny jokes.
One good thing is I'm gong to Vegas next week for a few days for an ex-bachelor party. My best friend was suppose to get married, but his fiance called off the wedding on Memorial day weekend. We're still going to Vegas, because we all still wanted too, he needs it, and we all paid for it months ago. His advice to me:
"Jump in, the waters fine..."
He went out and bought a car. I'm going to Vegas. I think a fair trade off for our misery...
Personally, I can't wait for the Christmas Advent Calendar.

I feel like I'm going to spew any second. I woke up with a migraine, and am recovering, but the stomach still doesn't feel right.
I don't know why I added that in, but anyways... damnit I forgot what I was going to say. OH! Every year we have a Mummers Parade downtown. I always thought that was just a thing our town did, but other places have them too, right? Well, I haven't went in ages, because it's always packed and crazy, but this year, maybe I'll go.
I'm also taking off the last week of Sept. (paid vacation) just so I can decorate the house the way it should be done. (Ok, and I have to use my hours before my rollover date
) Last year I didn't put any decorations up at all, and I was working six 10 hour days a week on nightshift, and I was sad. This year, I'm not holding back!
I can't wait for the Advent Calendar either. Just thinking about the predicaments Knacks and Kuse could get into is making me laugh already.
Matt, I don't know what we would all do without you. :*

HBO seems to be in a Halloween mood this month for some reason. They've been playing Elm Street 2, 5, and 6. Candyman 2. Friday the 13th Part 6. The Mangler. Necromonicon. Land of the Dead. Plus, they just started showing the House of Wax remake today.

I want to eat candy corn now.
Darth Galvatron, just send RiD Megatron over to flip them off. If I could command a giant robot hand that could hold a minivan in its palm, I'd be giving the bird to half the people in America. Only Unicron could do bigger.

Afternoon, everyone! My condolences to Darth Galvatron regarding his recent breakup. Loss can be tough to deal with. On a lighter note, I have been thinking about putting together my own Superman costume this summer. The ones in the stores are expensive, especially if you want one with muscles and such. The worst part is, I can't find any good Superman boots out there! I was thinking of buying a Superman costume and retooling it to take it to the next level. I'd get rid of the factory cape and make one out of a vinyl tablecloth or something, so as to better capture the look and texture from the movie. For the boots, I might take a pair of tennis shoes, sew some boot tops onto them, and then spray paint them a deep crimson so as to match everything else. Also, it might be a good idea to retailor the suit for a custom fit. (My sister sews) Yes, that sounds kinda cool, doesn't it?

Kevin: I want to be a my little pony, but my friends allways do a group theme, so I doubt I'll be able to.
gramsci: I blame the canadians.
Haloween is the only holiday I don't mind celebrating early. Christmas, however, should not even be mentioned until the day after Thanksgiving. Easter I can deal with all spring and I'm allways sad when it's over.
Also, whats the deal with the messages that I've met my posting quota?
Aaaand... I saw V for Vendetta last night. It was awesome. And I'm going to make some grape kool aid later.
Matt, are you ever going to review root beer kool aid?

Tony, I was gonna say that too. There are Hy-Vees all over Lincoln. The funniest part is that there are the cheap, crappy ones where everything is low prices (and kinda dirty), and the newer ones in the "rich" part of town where the same product is twice as much. Genius!
I was in a junk store last week, and they had an Easter display out. I spent five minutes trying to decide if it was new Easter stuff for next year, and they're super early, or it was old stuff from last Easter and they're just lazy. Then the store manager came over, offered to give me everything on the table at half off, so I ran away. He smelled like cabbage.

dohopoki,
Also, I'm the one with the lack of affection for halloween, no one else needs to take the blame.
ouch! This takes all the fun out of saying your name, now...
...okay...no it doesn't.

I finally pulled a Halloween yard sign up this Spring, but I just set it on the air conditioner unit so I'll just plug it back in with no attic time.
