07/30/2006 Entry: "The Freddy Krueger Board Game!"

I'd normally wait until Sunday night to put this up, but Sunday's shaping up to be incredibly busy and annoying, so let's do it early and call it a reason to celebrate. I've had this really odd A Nightmare on Elm Street board game sitting around forever, and I've finally gotten around reviewing it. I'm pretty happy with the article, if only because I had this total "oh shit" feeling before writing it, thinking I wouldn't have much to say. It turns out that I had enough to say; then again, if you scoured the review and removed "Freddy" and "Krueger" throughout, there'd only be four or five words left. But they'd be good words. Anyway, crap game, but fun to look at. Also comes with a bonus section about a Freddy Krueger figure. Crap figure, but fun to look at.

Making a note that will seem totally irrelevant a day after today, please feel free to continue playing with the SNT below if you're looking to talk about something other than Freddy Krueger.

I think there was a Goosebumps version of this game.

Ya you are right rocky there was cuz I use to have it!

If that's the case, I really hope they improved the rules by then.

"This room is DARK, and there are no windows and thus no MOONLIGHT, and it's kind of STEAMY in here, so I'll go to the TV ROOM. No, scratch that, I'll go to the DINING ROOM. I mean the TV ROOM. Ah, fuck it, I'll go to the HALLWAY, because that leads to the KITCHEN, which has a peephole that'll let me keep my EYES on the GYM."

Damnit, I haven't laughed so hard all day! smile I needed that.

Freddy was the first scary guy that I remember being a fan of. Sure he scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't sleep because of him, and was scared to walk near furniture in the dark for fear of his claws tearing out after my ankles, but there was some appeal, and I still don't know what it would've been for a 6 or 7 year old girl.

I so would've wanted that game if I knew about it. smile The cardboard reminds me of Mall Madness.

POG is back in stores. I have seen it. It's overpriced, but just try resisting.

wow.. i actually had that game.. - i never really played by its rules, though.. nor even looked at them.. - i just had freddy chase everyone around and eventually murder them.. - then i'd repeat the whole process all over again.. - i had a freddy yo-yo, too..

Goddamn, I was so drunk I thought I missed the SNT, but I gots two to too choose from here! Yo!

mmmm, picked up Part 5 the other day, it rocks, but then they all do. I love Freddy. Well, you can love Freddy but you can't ''LOVE'' Freddy, nahmeen?

You DID make it sound interesting. I can't accept that there were really more Elm Street board games in addition to this one...I believe it, but I don't accept it.
Ooh speaking of figures, I found out this week that the Harry Potter licensing is switching from Mattel to NECA, which, thanks to what I've heard here, I am excited about. I expect they'll finally make some toys worth collecting.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/30/2006 02:45 AM EST

I'm commenting as I read...

My best friend used to love Freddy. (She thought baby Freddy was SO cute!) If she had this game, I'm sure we would have played it a lot.

Yep, Ryane, I also thought Mall Madness.
I thought the Goosebumps game was very fun, but the last time my friends and I wanted to play it, we got too frustrated by the board setup. This was a game that my best fiend and I played all the time. We used to play in her closet because it was cooler in the summer.

Anyway, Freddy has a T.V. Room? I don't have a T.V. Room. I wonder what's in his study.
I love how the people look so jolly.
Trap doors: jumptubes
Oh man! Matt, you totally got me! Seriously- I thought this game was that messed up that they'd make that crap up. I can't believe I fell for it either.

Telling stories? Really? I must say, that was a good one- cracked me up.
Awww. Freddy looks so dejected.
I'm kind of disappointed that this game is so terrible.

Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 07/30/2006 02:55 AM EST

this reminds me of the home alone game i had/(have) when i was a kid. it was equally as shitty but probably kept me out of my mom's hair for atleast 20 minutes.

speaking of which, did anyone else have the 2-D Home Alone game for NES?

the fact that freddy needs a gym is entertaining in itself.

that and the fact that every single one of the characters is blushing. oh grandpa.

"Lightning Mailman" sounds like a pretty hip superhero. I don't know what his powers would entail exactly, but I assume it has something to do with delivering packages really quickly. In which case we can be certain that Lightning Mailman has not been entrusted with the delivery of my copy of the Civ IV expansion. So, that was jobbed out to his evil twin: Glacial Mailman.

Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 07/30/2006 08:51 AM EST

Had this game. Never played a full game of it. Just like every other board game I ever owned (over 30), except Connect Four. Board games just seemed so pointless when having a (S)NES.

"He ain't just a movie character. He's fucking material."

Umm.. Matt could you please clarify this statement? I respect your stance as a journalist/entertainer and the eccentricity that has and everything but uhh.. Well, I'm just remembering that Marilyn Manson track on either Smells Like Children or Portrait of an American Family (I think).. You know the one?

Chestnuts roasted by Todd @ 07/30/2006 09:32 AM EST

Great stuff! I guess it's time to admit that I have never seen a Nightmare movie, or a Friday the 13th movie. I really havent seen many horror movies at all, just Child's Play 1&2, oh and the movie Dolls! Man Dolls freaked me out as a kid, I'm still scared to throw out my china dolls in fear that they will come alive to kill me!

Even tho I missed out on seeing horror movies as a child I still enjoy reading reviews of the merchindise, it makes me realize that I still have goals in life. I still have not accomplished everything I need to do before I die... die from a scary dude with razors for a hand and a nasty looking face!

I need more sleep.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/30/2006 12:19 PM EST

It is currently in storage in another state at the moment, but I have the Nightmare on Elm Street game - A different one where you move your tokens from the 'nightmare' side of the board to the 'waking' side. First one to get all of their tokens across wins.

Now I was a huge NoES fan (until part 6...ecch) but the board game I have seems to be designed to lure you into Freddy's world so that he can get you - and by that I mean bore you to sleep, not immerse you in the Elm Street universe. lol

You ought to search the web for the video games too - I know there was NES and Commodore 64 games as well...equally cheezy, IMHO.

And yes, as a parting shot, my NoES cardboard sun visor is in the same box along with my costume materials such as the strap-on 'chest of souls' and cheezetastic plastic glove.

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 07/30/2006 12:37 PM EST

I think the pig with an apple in the mouth appeared in Part 1 or Part 3. I don't remember exactly, but the heroine ran through the dining room and the pig woke up and started squealing at her.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt F @ 07/30/2006 12:39 PM EST

I believe the track in question was on Smells Like Children, because I remember owning it and I never had American Family. Not that I was some kind of poser who acted like they were into Marilyn Manson despite only owning two albums and only really liking one. We're all stars now in the dope show?
(Actually I would like Manson a lot more if I'd ever gotten a refund for that concert where he broke his ankle 10 minutes in. Still waiting on that makeup show!)
I totally didn't pick up on that double entendre until now...that's just gross. Everybody loves a bad boy, but that one needs a manicure before he's fucking material for anybody.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/30/2006 12:42 PM EST

Ugh, and last night I had dreams of Freddy. Thanks Matt! razz

Nah, it wasn't that bad, compared to the old re-occurring one I used to have... All I really remember was being in a rather small, dark house at night, and he was there. He was looking all sinister and like he was going to come after me, but he never did, thank God. I hate being chased in my dreams.

2. Burly Man, Eh? No.

Is it this not the stupidest thing you've ever heard?

Man, XE is just not kind to boardgames most of the time.

It makes me feel like a big nerd. sad

I guess Horrorclix isn't something XE would care about then huh?

Basically its a collectible miniatures game like Heroclix, cept instead of having Superman fight Spiderman, its Vampires and Werewolves and such try to kill or save people, then kill each other.

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Rufus @ 07/30/2006 04:17 PM EST

I'm sad - we haven't got a single Halloween item at our TRU yet, except some kiddie shirts... So sad.

Oh that reminds me, Saturday night at 8, there's a thing on Discovery about the GIANT SQUID! :o Thought you might wanna know, Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/30/2006 04:40 PM EST

I have yet to see either Elm Street 3 or 4 in full. For some reason stations will show the other ones, but not those two.

The "Feeding Yourself to Death" is actually in part 5, the Dream Child. HBO been showing that one alot lately.

TV Room is actually in Freddy's Dead, the Final Nightmare (or was this made before that). He suckers in the stoner (who would later grow up to play John Arbuckle in the two Garfield movies) and kills him in the video game.

Wildstorm just announced a new monthly Elm Street comic series (along with Friday the 13th and TCM). Might be interesting. Fangoria is also going into the comic business.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 07/30/2006 04:46 PM EST

Actually, it sounds like the ability to kill off your opponents characters would be fun (I've been waiting my whole life for a board game like that), but the tedius crap you first have to go through ruins it.

If that is the case does anyone know of a board game that lets you bump-off the other players' characters that actually is fun?

Also, am I the only one here who actually prefers the funny sequels to the earler scarier films? I'm always hearing about how much of a shame it is that horror movie sequels go the comedy route, but I actually like a cheesy, stupid horror flick that makes me laugh better that a well-made horror flick that's actually scary.

Chestnuts roasted by Mara @ 07/30/2006 08:48 PM EST

My sisters may have looked at this game as kids, but Mom would have said "no" in about fifty different ways. She hates horror to this day. I'm on her side - I hate horror, too. I got queasy at my bloody knee after I fell off my bike two weeks ago, my less some torn-up guy with razor fingers and a fondness for slicing up dreamers. The only time I ever remember us getting away with playing a slasher-movie-related game as kids was the "Friday the 13th" Nintendo game. We only rented that once, not because of Jason or blood, but because it simply sucked. My sister beat it in less than an hour and complained loudly about how easy it was afterwards.

Chestnuts roasted by Tenacious Tate @ 07/30/2006 10:35 PM EST

I am SO ready for Halloween, Tenacious Tate! WOOHOO! big grin

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/30/2006 11:12 PM EST

Tenacious Tate, I was born pumped for Halloween. Also born naked and crying.
Matt, I see we have the same sun-n-moon-gots-faces blanket. We also have the same squishy Freddy, though after being played with alot mine got a new paint job that, in all modesty, looked better than his normal one but chipped horribly when played with. So I kinda screwed myself out of a cool toy. That's okay, I aslo had a little Freddy suction cup buddy holding a skull. And he had a removable hat.

Chestnuts roasted by RedLightBulbs @ 07/31/2006 12:02 AM EST

squee4242: Yeah I think you're right about that. smile Awesome you know the (rather disturbing) track I was referring to. That sucks about the show you missed, I wanted to see him with Courtney Love but totally blew my shot at that so I got to see Rob Zombie instead (which was insanely good, btw). Good call on the manicure. I actually knew Matt didn't at all mean that because of his italics but it just occurred to me and I had to post it to share cuz it cracked me up.

Captain Rufus: I totally cannot wait for HorrorClix. A friend and I are planning to get those as soon as they're available. I never played HeroClix but I dug the MageKnight ones, though I mainly just looked at them, never played. I really dig the whole idea that you can use story cards and things like that instead of just battles. Great concept so I hope it delivers!

Chestnuts roasted by Todd @ 07/31/2006 03:12 AM EST

He suckers in the stoner (who would later grow up to play John Arbuckle in the two Garfield movies) and kills him in the video game.

Hah! How does he do it--does he throw a Goomba at him? And then does the stoner make that surprised face and body position Mario makes in his death sprite, and falls off the screen?

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 07/31/2006 03:15 AM EST

I've got this boardgame called Shrieks and Creeks, and to this day it is still the coolest game I've ever played. I got it at this autopart/thrift/convineance store when I was a kid, not a mile from my house. The store is almost as noteworthy as the game, now that I type this, but anyway...

You have this device that you plug into a tape deck, yes remember those, kids? and then you placed these tombstone shaped keys into it to play the tape, or not play it, based on the shape of said keys. As a kid, I thought they actually played different parts of the tape, but now I know it just played it or didn't.

It's still my favorite boardgame. Anyone else enjoy this particular offering?

This is Muppet Baby coming to you live from...the hospital! Yup, I have been in 2 different hospitals since LAST Monday, and haven't been able to get on the internet for awhile. Yet, here I am, IV in arm, pole at my side, ugly blue night shirt on, sitting in a medical library I found on the 4th floor, hoping I don't get caught! Man, XE didn't disappoint- what a lot of stuff to read. Excellent.

First, thanks to everyone who sent out 'get well' wishes- that really meant a lot even though so far, no dice. There is no telling how much longer I will be in here. (It's extra frustrating when you're on the 'clear liquids' diet- all broth and Jello, allll the time)

The last thread made my day- GUMMI BEARS ON DVD ! FINALLY! I definately thought that Gummi Bears would have gotten the DVD treatment before Chip + Dale, honestly. Plus Darkwing Duck, too? Jeez, I will have to buy all 3 and Ducktales as well- Disney USED to be amazing (along with Nickelodeon) and I am just so glad to be able to finally own these shows. God bless DVDs. And after being sick for this long, I will have NO GUILT at all about spending $100 on shows that will cheer me up!

Loved reading the half-drunk SNT. I haven't been able to drink since April with my sickness, but glad to see others keeping it up!

Now, on to read about this Freddy board game, which I had always heard rumors about. Good stuff. Thanks, XE, for cheering up a sick chick in the corner of the medical library at Fredericton hospital. :0) I am SO glad I snuck out of my room!

(sorry for the insanely long post- I've been internet deprived)

Muppet Baby, it's awesome to hear from you, thats hilarious that you snuck out of your room to check XE. I really do hope your feeling better soon, hospitals + sick = suck ass. Well at least you have a goal for when you get out, buy some good ol' Disney DVDs, you can bounce here there and everywhere, then when there's trouble you can call D.W big grin

The Gym looks a lot like the the one in part 4, where the girl is pumping iron before Freddy turns her into a bug and squishes her. If you haven't seen 4, it's actually rather good.

Plus, I think Alice is cuter before she goes all blonde and hot for part 5. I was actually shocked to find out they were the same actress.

Chestnuts roasted by Frank D @ 07/31/2006 09:56 AM EST

Oh Muppet Baby, really sorry to hear all that. Well wishes to you! Please keep us updated as you can.
LOL Todd, actually I was there to see Hole (who were okay, but I saw them headline later and it was a much better show), and it turned out to be the last show the two bands played together because there was bad blood brewing...I always thought Manson played up his injury to steal Courtney's thunder at quitting the tour...they promised a makeup show if we paid another $15, which we did, but then the Littleton tragedy happened, and Manson cancelled again. razz (Now that I think about it though, wasn't that track about a "Frankie" rather than a "Freddy"?)

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/31/2006 10:14 AM EST

Mars: Actually, the video game death is kind of lame. After beating him up while wearing the Power Glove and making him jump like Mario on a sugar high, he simply makes him fall down a hole. Blood does spray from the hole though I think.

Another new horror merchandise I've seen advertised at least is Halloween ceramic villages of Elm Street, Camp Crystal Lake, and the TCM place. Even comes with ceramic Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface. Cool but expensive. Heck, I think you need to join one of those "We'll send you a piece at the low price of $19.99 every 4 to six weeks." clubs.

Put me in the "Can't Wait for Halloween" line. I've already been "researching" what haunted houses/forests will be around this year. Unfortunately, it looks like the big cornfield maze that we go to yearly will have the same pattern as last year.

We went to the big tourist trap suck-hole known as Gatlinburg, TN this weekend and went to the Ripley's Haunted House there next to the Believe It or Not! museum. I must say that not only did it suck, it was THE suck. Nearly everything in there can be bought at frightcatalog.com (great place for stuff even if they are a little pricey). It didn't even have the cheese-factor of a Dracula's Castle. They took themselves way too seriously. The one cool thing: the spooks don't stop at the elevator ride back down to the street.

X-E,

First of all thanks to Matt for allowing me to jack the thread for my own personal agenda and thanks to Jedoc, Fox, Cameron T, Deuce, Invader Norbert, Hoverbored and Kingklash. After reviewing the Cemetery names and seeing the responses and various other feedback on this topic I have picked a winner of sorts. Congrats to Jedoc for the suggestion Buried Treasure. This will be the name, I like it and think I can take the name and create a theme. It will also work because my wife I and are dressing like Pirates this year.
I will also be using some other suggestions as signage for the cemetery. I think I am going to create an IHOC: International House of Corpses, (thanks Hoverbored), sign as well as The vintage formal wear and slightly used coffins sale signs. I wish I could send you all prizes and maybe I will be able to come up with something in the near future for Jedoc but since my Halloween budget is ZERO dollars, it might be hard to do. I will definitely take some pictures and hopefully be able to post them somewhere, maybe with Matt on this fine site?? Anyway, thanks again and I will be sure to keep everyone informed as to the progress of my newly named Cemetery, Buried Treasure.

I just bought two board games this weekend. The Xbox was getting kinda old as sole party entertainment. We bought Scene It : Horror Edition and Taboo. let me just say, that even though it is ultra simple, Taboo is now my favorite game. We played that game until we ran out of cards (front and back 256 cards total) and beer. I would definitely recommend it.

My TV is very busy recording Shark Week programming. They aren't even rerunning all that much from last year! I might be over Great Whites by the end of the week, but I doubt it...I'm most looking forward to the Dirty Jobs specials, and the one about sharkdiving in the Sea of Cortez.

And joke or not, Empty Grave is a FUCKING AWESOME Army nickname for grandpa. He was such a badass, remember when he punched that Kraut's head in? The guy was attacking that French girl, and ol' Empty Grave saved her. He said she should see the sun rise over New York City, and that's why your grandma has that accent that used to embarrass you at the supermarket. You selfish little bastard.

Also, had to stop at the grocery store earlier tonight to buy toothbrushes and pretty smelling things for stupid business trip, and there it was...a whole big display of Halloween candy, dead center in the store. Those character player pieces look like what it would look like if Nightmare on Elm Street was a cartoon short on Nickelodeon's Pinwheel.

I really got nothing to add for this thread, but it would've been funny to see the double decker walls in any Elm St (or any) movie at all.

Wow, I feel like the biggest loser saying this but, did anyone else realize that the address on the collectible figurines was wrong? They have it as 842 Elm, when (in the movies) it was 1428 Elm! I just finished my Nightmare marathon (Nightmares 1-6, New Nightmare, and Freddy vs Jason), so my brain is nothing but jello-mush now...
I'm pumped for Halloween, I have been for a few months now! Gonna get more "in the mood" by going on to watch a Friday the 13th marathon... If I don't survive, I want X-E to have all my stuff!
Just a thought; could the TV room be from Dream Warriors? The one crazy chick who always wanted to be on TV & then had Freddy come to life in the TV & crash her brain through the screen? ("Welcome to Prime Time bitch!"wink

Yeah, it definitely looks like that.

I had this game when I was younger. I always tried to play it but I never understood it. So I just used to stare at the box b/c Freddy always creeped me out. I wish I still had it though.
