This was pretty cool. Apparently, Nick is canceling Danny Phantom, and apparently, some people are upset about it. Some people were upset enough about it to stage a protest right outside the building today, complete with picket signs that were so awesome, I'm still not entirely sure this wasn't an internal publicity stunt. They gave out flyers and free candy, had televisions playing episodes of the show...amazing. The people protesting were a pretty eclectic group, so I'm assuming that they founded their cause online and only met each other this morning. They weren't all "FUCK YOU VIACOM" or anything, either. It felt a little bit more like a party, only they were celebrating something that pissed them the fuck off. Don't know how helpful it'll be, but I scored a single-wrapped LifeSaver out of it. Continue on for more pics...
I think I'll skip work the day they can SpongeBob.

1st X-E comment ever, and maybe it's a 1st-poster. Cool.
Never been one for civil disobedience myself, but if I were to whip out a placard it'd probably have something to do with a cartoon cancellation or discontinuation of an item of food or drink.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a protest over cancelling a cartoon. Good for them, although I had no idea who Danny Phantom was until I saw the pictures.
I should've started one when Cartoon Network cancelled Courage the Cowardly Dog. *sigh* I need those on DVD...
Is Pete & Pete Season 2 out on DVD yet?

Weidest/funniest protest that ever happened in Iowa was a few years ago. The cable company dropped MTV and replaced it with Animal Planet. MASSIVE protests, complete with chants and everything. It was even on the local news.
They did bring it back about a month later, so now we have both channels.
There was also a small protest when the paper dropped Rex Morgan MD and replaced it with some unfunny piece of crap. They brought that back within a month also.

As far as Nicktoons, I only like FOP and Spongebob (although the newer episodes aren't that great).
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a stunt though. Nickelodeon always made Danny Phantom seem like a bigger deal than it probably actually is.

I love that "Save the Spirit of Nickelodean" poster. For me, Nick died years ago...sometime soon after "Salute Your Shorts" and "Hey Dude" and "Pete and Pete" were taken off the air.

It has been dead to me, too, for quite soem time. Maybe the cancellation of a number of these shows can usher in a new era of good.
Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 07/25/2006 02:44 AM EST
Oh, you have to love posters whose logic runs thusly: "it's not my cup of tea, therefore, it sucks." Their I.Q.s? Gotta be in the single digits. Dan Quayle City.
New stuff? Retard, please. Kill an excellent, still-wildly-popular show for the sake of some trash like (just as an example) "Robot Boy," which steals from so many sources it makes one's head spin? No thanks.
Superior toons "Kim Possible" and "Futurama" have been rescued from the grave by similar (albeit not so public) protests. Similar fights continue for "Teen Titans." In all cases, it's people who appreciate a good toon versus boardroom Shemps who think they know better based on "focus group analysis" and horsecrap taught at business colleges.
More power to the protesters.
Chestnuts roasted by Happenstance @ 07/25/2006 02:50 AM EST
Wow, that was pretty condescending. I didn't say that it sucked...I simply implied that for ME, Nickelodean was dead. I have no problem with the protestors. In fact, if they can bring a show back, more power to them. Hell, I'd love to be able to bring some of the older shows that I mentioned above back (or even "You can't do that on TV"
.
I simply find the sign humorous, since MY Nickelodean, that I grew up with, has been dead for some time...No spirit to rescue!

I don't even really watch Nickelodeon anymore, and most of those action shows put me to sleep. But the day they cancel Fosters is the day I rise up in arms.
Btw I just woke up from a dream about XE (its 8am in the UK). Rob Zombie was shooting a music video and everyone was walking around in sweet black samurai gear and I saw MattXE and was like "Yo, Matt! It's Eddie Lightning Frog from the blog." He said "Hey" and then pointed out a bunch of other blog members. It was awesome!!
Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 07/25/2006 03:32 AM EST
Good morning everybody. I haven't posted on this blog for months at least. Anyway, i break my silence with this question for Eddie Lightning Frog: when Matt pointed out blog members to you in his dream, what did they look like, and how would you know what they look like since you've never seen any of them?
Chestnuts roasted by Hoverboard @ 07/25/2006 07:33 AM EST
Well, it's 6:30 AM and I haven't had any coffee yet. I suppose I could fit in with the cast of a Rob Zombie video right now.
The whole Fairly Oddparents thing is kind of sad, even though I haven't watched it since high school. But one of my fondest memories is catching the world premiere of FO and Invader Zim in a hotel room in Las Cruces with a bunch of my friends on an FFA trip. It was something special, we quoted it incessantly for the rest of the week, and it led to a really tragic proportion of the in-jokes within my crew. Good times.
Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 07/25/2006 07:33 AM EST
Hoverboard- That's the weird thing. I know what Matt looks like from his old articles, but even he didn't really look like himself. Everyone was in sweet, black samurai getups. But somehow I knew it was him, ya follow? The members he pointed out looked either like samurai or just like normal 20-something yr olds: jeans, t-shirts, etc. We were all on the floor of like an office building or upper tier of a mall, and Rob Zombie was on a dais in the middle, singing with epic wind blowing all around him. It was a really pumped dream the more I think more about it. Damn alarm had to ruin it

Cameron, I'm in the boat with you about Nick. It would be sweet to see a retro show on there every once in awhile, but...Nick is what it is.
The only cartoonish protest type thing I ever took a part in was signing internet petitions to bring Space Ghost to DVD back in like 99/2000. I meant it though.

They're cancelling FOP? Isn't that Nick's (along with Spongebob) best show based on ratings? Glad they are canceling Danny Phantom. That show was utter crap.
I'm still pissed at Nickelodeon for being ambitious enough for starting the show 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd knowing they probably weren't going to finish it. 76 more good deeds to go....for life!
I'm really sad that they got rid of Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios, Orlando Florida. Not that much was going on in that building in the last five years but still. It was cool to sneak backstage and talk to some of the people that worked on the shows.
Oh, and what the fuck was Nick thinking when the canceled Legends?

There were a few live events to try and save Arrested Development...obviously they didn't do any good.
I never gave Oddparents a second thought until Matt mentioned that he wasn't particularly into it, which made me curious. I actually like it well enough, though it's not as good as Spongebob or Jimmy Nuetron. Besides those three, there aren't a lot of Nick shows I stop the remote for, but I think it's silly to say the spirit of the network is dead because some childhood favorites were cancelled after decent runs. It's the network for kids, not retro loving twenty-somethings.

All you Rocko fans ARE watching Camp Lazlo, right (not to plug the competition too much)? Of course it's no Rocko but I find it pretty enjoyable.
Lots of flaming going on lately (which sucks, knock it off already, even when you do have a good point you ruin it with personal insults).
Avatar: The Last Airbender is on Nick, isn't it? That's new, and I've heard only great things about it...only watched a couple eps myself. Of course, for every Avatar you might get a My Dad the Rock Star (sooooo bad) so it's a crapshoot.
Lazlo is the only 'toon I'm watching regularly at the mome, though I'm on the lookout for a sub of the Powerpuff Girls anime. Who cares about them though, what's important now is how are we going to save Danny? Is he a ghost, by the way? Did anyone ever consider the fact that it might not be the quality of the shows that are declining, it might just be that we are getting older and the things we used to enjoy just aren't amusing anymore. Kids today might just love the hell out of a show that we as adults can't get our heads around. On more than one occassion, i've tried to sit down and watch something that I used to love as a kid only to find out that it just isn't that good anymore. stop ragging on people for standing up for something that they love!

With no cable, I've never seen DP. I have seen FOP, and that show's so hyperactive it probably got cancelled because it had a heart attack.
It's true Nick had some problems with it, but Invader Zim mainly died because Jhonen wished it. If he had wanted to continue the series, I'm sure another network would have seen the fandom and been interested. But he's off the show-making business for good. He didn't like the process.
Matt, don't worry--Nick won't cancel Spongebob until no one cares about it anymore. Just look at how long they stretched out Rugrats....

I dunno, but I find that a little harsh. We all have things we could rag on the other for, be it for liking Danny Phantom or being a Bon Jovi show or some other guilty pleasure. As for the quality of shows ... the last time I watched anything on there was when I was babysitting my friend's kid and it was the Angry Beavers. It wasn't bad. I, myself, am greatly anticipating the release of Darkwing Duck: volume One on DVD at the end of next month. Except for a very brief period in the early 90's, my house didn't have cable when I was a kid (and we still don't). My biggest tv memories are from network tv and syndication. The Disney Afternoon sure brings back memories for me. Darkwing Duck is my favorite of the bunch. Just last year I bought the Game Boy game off amazon. I think that it is one of the best NES-Game Boy games I've played. I've never played another 8-bit game quite like it, although I heard from a web page that it uses the engine from Megaman. P.S.: On my last post from this morning, I misspelled my moniker as "Hoverboard."

I personally think Danny Phantom, and many of his counterparts, completely suck testicles. Some of the NickToons are cool thoug, but I don't let my daughter watch that stuff anymore. I let her watch Grimm once and she was picking her nose and burping at people for like a week afterwards. While that may be funny, I can't have that kind of grief every day so NickToons are banned until she is older.

I hope Matt and my fellow bloggers don't mind, but having seen another blogger do this, I'd like to do an extemporaneous survey: Please share your bad experiences working in fast food. I'll start: one day within the last three months, I was working the register at my local McDonald's and had just totaled the customers order. I went to get the food, as I figured would be a good idea, but I hadn't taken the money yet. My manager would have been wise to remind me to take the money and give change before fetching the order. Instead, he grabs me as I am leaving the register, drags me in front of it, and stands behind me working my arms like a puppet, performing the necessary actions, all in full view of the customers.

Definitely would buy the DVD for Hey Dude if it ever came out; it's one of my earliest clear memories! I had a crush on Christine Taylor for most of my childhood, then forgot her until recently (thanks to Dodgeball and Arrested Development). I wonder what ever happened to Kelly Brown...

Meh, never posted before, but DP is just about my favorate show, after Grey's Anatomy. Maybe it's wrong, being nearly 20 and all, but I'm drawn in. Mostly, the show doesn't seem done. I mean, there were a lot of questions to be answered. As for FOP, it peaked long ago. Now all the characters have become one-dimentional.
But I like DP because it seems to have dark themes, but presented in a light way. Unlike other shows that are like 'OMG I'm going to steal your SOUL' *cough* yugioh *cough*. Sort of,
"I'm here to kill your father. And I am not a frootloop!"
Also there's a certain appeal to the main character. But I really can't sell yall on this show. I just popped in to say I'm sorry it's being cancelled and I have support for this effort. It looks a lot of fun

My opinion on the whole old vs. new Nickelodeon future nostalgia thing is that when I watch most of the shows I watched when I was a kid now, they still hold up as great shows. I have one idea that will revamp Nickelodeon completely. BRING BACK DOUBLE DARE. Not only that, but grab up Mark Summers from that stupid food network show and have him host it again. Double Dare took the world by storm once, and could very well do it again!!!

So what will those girls do when their protest doesn't work? They'll be killing themselves next or as they would put it "going ghost". He heh yeah okay that was lame whatever.

As a moderator of the forum who had the greatest part in organizing this, I'd like to say thanks for posting! Unfortunately, I couldn't be there myself, but I heard that everyone had a blast.
Seeing these pictures of all the signs everyone made and the big poster that many people from the forum contributed to just makes my day!
As for those commenting on the "old broads" I gotta say, they're a mix of moms and fans, and some are both, I'm sure!
All of us on the board are hyped up about the great response that everyone got. We hope that this has some impact, but either way, we're doing what we can as fans to save something we love.
Thanks again!!

However, I spotted my entry on the poster! ^_^

I am only 13, but I still think old Nick is way, WAY better than new nick. Same with cartoon network. the only good thing to watch on there is Billy and Mandy. It's been overrun with Anime! and with Avatar on nick, they might not be far behind.....Nick should bring back Rocko, Zim, etc... (maybe Real monsters, that was an ik show i guess,)I don't particuarly like DP, But If they could replace it with something from old Nick...

I am a big fan of Arrested Development and Invader Zim, but I am at least willing to accept the unfortunate truth that they aren't coming back. Well, there have been rumors of an AD movie, but I'm not counting on that so much.
At least the creators of Ed Edd and Eddy agreed to make a fifth and sixth season of the show. It's in the middle of its fifth season; i really think that the series has improved over time (the fourth season being the best one in my view), but then again Turner doesn't have any real control over it because it's made by a group in Vancouver that's separate from Turner.

They CANNOT cancel Danny Phantom XD
That show is pretty much the best nicktoon ever not including Invader Zim. All the new crap sucks. I mean, The X's? Come On.

I'm 20 years old, in college, and love Danny Phantom for having three-dimensional characters and good stories. If only prime time TV could be so good... Thanks, everyone who showed up to the protest - I wish I could have been there!

Heh, well apparently now I'm an 'old broad' yet still a teen... well, given I'm not in any of those pics... But I'm just going to say this; I don't see anything wrong with fighting for something you love. I'm sorry that a lot of you can't understand that concept, but I'm not ashamed to show I love that cartoon. As a university student studying film, I can honestly say from an informed background on animation and media that this show is really excellent in that regard. Given, there have been episodes a little off, there have also been episodes which were just spectacular.
I'd just like to add though, for those of you who've said 'I don't watch Nick anymore,' or 'I haven't seen Danny Phantom' and then go on to insult it... do you see a little problem there? Maybe with how well informed on the show you might actually be?
And to be honest, for those who think Nick might be going the right direction with cancelling most of it's top shows right now (Danny Phantom sitting at about #3), have you seen what they're bringing in? I for one am not looking forward to 'Mr. Meaty' X.x
Oh, and on a random note, some of those people are preteens... Would hardly call them 'old broads who need boyfriends'.

Hi. I'm the old broad who designed the poster with all the little pictures on it. And I'm damn proud of what I did.
Unlike a lot of people, I'm a huge fan of this show and I hate to see it go when it has so much potential.
I don't mind if other people hate it, but please don't go slamming the people who support it. That's just... kinda... stupid. And it makes you look like you had nothing better to think or say about anything.
Chestnuts roasted by White Gryphon @ 07/28/2006 12:56 AM EST
To the protestors who happened upon this entry -- please don't take the view of the minority over the rest of us, because I think most of the people who read this site can really appreciate this kind of effort. I know I did!
Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/28/2006 09:30 AM EST
I'm another "old broad" who was there, I suppose, haha. A lot of us were adults who brought our kids who are huge fans of the show, but a lot of us ADULTS are also fans! That is the beauty of "Danny Phantom" to me -- it really has something that appeals to all ages, and is, I feel, one of the most remarkable animated series to come down the pike in a long time. It deserves a few more seasons.
We at the rally tried to portray a positive, professional attitude despite the underlying theme of protest against the cancellation-of-production decision, and I'm glad that Viacom and Nick felt the positive vibes of the group. We DO support Nick! Just not this particular decision.
And I can guarantee that this was NOT an internal Nickelodeon publicity stunt! We just tried to be as professional, personable, and upbeat as we could. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, right?
We got something like 400 signatures on our petitions during the day, too, and it was really great to see all the support.
Thanks for the write up on the event and thanks to all the people who posted favorably here. It really was a great day for all.

I would have been a part of this protest if I could have made it up to NYC. This was actually planned out by members of an online message board determined to do what they could to save Danny Phantom. Cancelling Danny puts the final nail in Nickelodeon's coffin. First they do a radical change in progrtamming, then they shut down the studios in Orlando (including destroying the Slime Geyser) then they think they can eliminate the one awesome show still left on the network? Not if the fans have anything to say about it.
Chestnuts roasted by Brad @ 07/28/2006 02:26 PM EST
I happen to like DP, it's one of the few NickToons I do enjoy. Along with FOP, I don't watch much else on that channel. I can understand why they're protesting. I know not a lot of things stir people in to actually acting but I'm proud people for this fandom got up and said something.
It might not make a difference to you, or Nick. But it makes them feel like they've at least tried. And for those of you who are downing them because they're trying, shame on you. What do you do? Nothing.

I just gotta say, what was the website/forum that put all this together? I'd like an URL.
And to the people who came here through that site/forum, theres lots of stuff here from dozens of shows cancelled before their time (not to mention at the right time, or stuff that went off about 6 years later than it should *coughs*Rugrats*coughs*) that we all still remember!

Danny Phantom, personally, is not my cup of tea. I personally think it's rather overrated. I don't see what's so good about it. It didn't make me laugh at all; only cringe. And it's full of clichés, such as an "Evil Danny." A lot of the older shows are MUCH better in my opinion, and I'm not just saying that out of nostalgia.
I'd take Rocko, Angry Beavers, or Pete & Pete over Danny any day.
Chestnuts roasted by Evangelion Unit-01 @ 07/28/2006 10:26 PM EST
Haven't seen "Danny Phantom," but I do understand being upset enough about a show cancellation to protest. I wrote tons of letters and even got my website in an article on saving shows in the "Pres of Atlantic City" when American Movie Classics unfairly canceled my favorite (and now sadly little-known, as it isn't on DVD and AMC would prefer to forget it's existance) dramady "Remember WENN" in September 1998.
Nick canceled "Fairly Oddparents?" That's a bit of a shock, more than "Danny Phantom." A few people mentioned that it's still very popular. It's not a favorite of mine - I've found some episodes amusing but mostly shrill - but I know other folks who think it's one of Nick's best.

OMG We have Danny Phantom Madness up in here. Lets not get all Bitner and go on and on about this for a year. Danny Phantom is cool. Protesting is cool. M.I.L.F.s who watch cartoons are cool. So, anybody else wanna see Double Dare come back?

Speaking as the "old broad" in the second picture up there, yes.
I would like to see many old Nick shows like Double Dare come back. I grew up on them. But as that seems unlikely, I'll proudly fight for the good shows on Nick we have now.

I'm a big fan of DP! I think it's completely amazing, watched on premiere night and all. I personally think it's the best show currently airing on any network right now after Doctor Who... and I will write/type letters and sign petitions until my wrists fall off.
Chestnuts roasted by Ravvie @ 07/30/2006 01:19 AM EST
Well, the protest was not a publicity stunt. Nick doesn't want us to know they're cancelling shows. Danny Phantom, Fairly Oddparents, and even Jimmy Neutron. The reason? New shows. Like Mr. Meaty's.....if anyone has seen the commercial, all the other shows are better. Danny Phantom is just too young to die. It has potential. Character development is there. Some might not like it, saying it's a rip off of Ghostbusters or Phantom, but there's no originality in the world and that's this generation Ghost Boy. There are petition everywhere and even a picture protest called Continue the Chain. I hope it lives. I love it. It has so much potential and it needs to live!
All three shows need to live, but Danny is the youngest and doesn't deserve to die all the way yet!

This IS AWESOME!
My goodness, the gloves are off and the stuff is LIVE, people. This is quite cool to see that people could/ did get together and protest supporting a cartoon, had things been different in my life, and maybe still hanging around people who are of like minds I would have tired to do some protests in my area for things i actually believe in. I believe in the protest to build a time machine to start catoon protests in the past, and maybe some stuff about saving maybe soem lives, and stopping some wars, and savign Kidd Video, Robotech, and TONS more stuff. Oh , and if we win the protest, and we get the time machine, can i get my original drafts of Tunnels and Ogres, it was my 1st Role Playing game i dev'd.
Hold On Tight to your dreams, people, and do whatever it takes to keep the spirit alive of your faveorite shows, it's your life, and your happiness matters.

I know, I felt like crying cuz DP was canceling! It's one of my favorite shows ever!!!! Danny Phantom only gets 53 episodes and then canceled? It doesn't seem right to me. And FOP is one of my other favorite shows. Thank God, Butch Hartman said it's only a 55% chance it will stay on the air! I mean, c'mon, 'Mr. Meaty'? A show I never watched and I feel like throwing up just looking at the commercial. (sorry, I exaggerate a bit) But it's NOT a for sure chance, so for all you DP out there, do what you can to save Danny Phantom!! He ROX!!

The point is, it won't work. Ratings are what matter with all tv shows. If Danny Phantom does lousy in that department, Danny Phantom is dead. And good riddance too, that is one sorry cartoon.

Whatever, as long as they leave Avatar alone. Danny Phantom just struck me as one of the many shows trying to steal some Stephen Silver (Kim Possible) thunder.
The one that really bothers me right now is Ben 10. What the flying bloody monkey hell is that? After Teen Titans is actually homage-fueled enough to do an FLCL episode (!), the creators somehow run out of fuel and instead generate this sad little 10-year old escapism fantasy that plays like a 22 minute cereal commercial? Sigh.

HEY! I like Ben Ten
.
Anyway, I'm glad that someone is deciding to take some action to save one of Nick's best shows. That Jimmy Neutron and Fairly Oddparents are three of the best Nick shows, and We really njeed to do something to save them. Otherwise, Nick will start circling the bowl with crap like Mr. Meaty (Those puppets are probably making Jim Henson role in his grave), Ninja School (Oh yeah, reeeeeeal original) and Kappa Mikey (It sounds good in theory, but everywhere I look everyone says that this show sucks). Only Avatar and Spongebob will be left after the other good series die. Plus, allthough Danny Phantom will get a good ending, what about Fairly Oddparents and Jimmy Neutron? If they're going to be cancelled, at least end them on a better note than "Jimmy Timmy 3". But, if we start sending letters to Viacom, we could save those shows. Not a petition, because everyone knows from that "Save He-Man" fiasco that petitions don't work, but a real letter campaing. I know of the large X-E readerbase, but even that may not be enough. Post about it on your forum, mention it on your blog, do whatever you can do to get the word out. Vicaom's mailing adress is at their website (Viacom.com). Now get out there and start mailing!

I don't know... I loved Oddparents and Phantom when they first started, but if the show's going to stay in the same vein as the last few new episodes aired, maybe they should just let it go. I mean honestly, that Kindred Spirits episode might as well have been someone's fanfic, and I'm not sure that it wasn't. Nobody's ever written a fanfic that became a good episode of a show since Tiny Toons "How I Spent my Summer Vacation". I would love to see new DP, but what I really want is for CN to bring Megas XLR back.

For those who want to write to Nickelodeon or Viacom to POLITELY express your feelings on the cancellation of Danny Phantom or any of your favorite shows, they are both headquartered in the same building:
Nickelodeon (or Viacom)
1515 Broadway
New York, NY 10036
Attention: Nickelodeon Programming
Just please be nice in what you write. Getting mad at them will only result in them getting defensive or irritated, and we want them to listen, not ignore us!
Keep Danny Flying!
