07/17/2006 Entry: "Ice Blue Kool-Aid & Nintendo Poster."

I didn't get a chance to finish that new article yet (but I have started), so we head for our traditional fallback plan of a new Kool-Aid review. I thought the crew was getting a little red-heavy, so let's shade up like a motherfucker with a review of Ice Blue, the coolest Island Twist, still currently on the market as "Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade," a regular Kool-Aid Twist. Harug rug rar. It's a special Kool-Aid for many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that Ice Blue is, indeed, original Berry Blue reincarnate. If you like drinks, you'll like this!

(click pic to enlarge)

Came across this while cleaning out boxes today -- it's one of those old posters that came packaged with, in some variation, every Nintendo game ever. Paperwork was half the joy of getting a new Nintendo game. From the often elaborate instruction manuals to the No Postage Necessary subscription cards to Nintendo Power, the game's assorted paperwork made those rides back from the toy store less about a bullet race to your bedroom-based video game systems and more about finally having something worth reading. Posters like the one above were very often a part of the paperwork, offering picture-punctuated lists of popular and/or new games. One of my favorite things to do was pretend I could only ever have three of the games and figure out which three they'd be, so I'm putting that question to you:

Click the poster to see it bigger, and pick the three games you'd bring along if you were going to be stranded on a tiny island with a working Nintendo for a few months. Keep in mind, that's a different question than "name your three favorites."

I'd probably go with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which aside from being a great game also had the trump of never seeming to get old. For #2, I think I'd swipe Kung-Fu. That one would get old, but the thought of punching dragon eggs to death before they had a chance to hatch seems to offset knowing that. And needing to pick both a classic and a long game for the all-important #3, I guess I'm going with The Legend of Zelda. Sure, the thrill of figuring out where to bomb my way into secret arrow shops is gone, but I never did quite master the art of the cemetery section. Your turn.

I'd have to go with Punch Out, Metroid, and Tetris. You can always use Tetris.

Chestnuts roasted by Doc Scarealot @ 07/17/2006 12:16 AM EST

Let's see here. Have to go with Zelda, because it's Zelda. Next, I'm going to pick Dragon Warrior. It's a bit of a gamble, as I've never actually played it, but a good RPG can kill more hours than any other genre. The final choice is Mario Brothers, but I'm going to cheat by making it the version with both Mario and Duck Hunt on one cartridge.

My 3? Easy cheesy, please-y.
1. Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link(yes, it's my fave)
2. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!(replay value, big time)
3. Dragon Warrior(oh the hours I could clock into that mother)

See? Easy. YOUR turn. SECOND?!?

I think I would go with Tetris, Super Mario Brothers, and Metroid. Those would give me the most playtime, I feel.

I'm a dummy for not taking Tetris. Can I give back Kung-Fu?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/17/2006 12:20 AM EST

I would choose SMB 2, Tetris, and Pinball. I love Pinball games.

I was looking at some of those new Kool-Aid Singles today and it had a weird warning on them "Not Recommended with flouridated water." I live in Iowa and our water is flouridated. Doesn't all cities in the US flouridate their water? Probably why I' haven't really been a powder drink guy (Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, hot chocolate mixes etc) anymore.

1. Ice Hockey - I know it's not the most obvious choice, however, I know we all like to get nostalgic here -- so here's my story: I remember playing Ice Hockey in the late 80's with my older brother on a school night during a terrible snowstorm. During our heated game, my Mother came in and announced school the following day was cancelled; needless to say, after a small celebratory dance we continue playing that damn game for what felt like hours.

2. The Legend of Zelda - The music and rupees... need I say more?

3. Super Mario Bros. 2 - I always had a thing for Birdo.

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 07/17/2006 12:34 AM EST

Zelda, Metroid, and SMB2. Yes, the second one.

On Kool-Aid: Has anyone else tried the Watermelon Cherry flavor? It's rock awesome!

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 07/17/2006 12:34 AM EST

I'd take Tetris, as I'm amazingly addicted to the game. Then probably Pinball and Legend of Zelda.

Mmm... maybe now would be an opportune time to drink that old packet of Island Twists Ice Blue I've been hanging on to. Sad I only have one. Anyone wanna trade for some Strawberry Tea? I have like 14 packets of it.

Is this a threat, Matt?

If so, I'd bring the following 3 games:

1) an inflatable game
2) "How To Make Oars Out of Sticks & Sand"
3) Mario Bros 3.

wink

Second of all, I'm continuing my poll from the last thread, What do you think are the best XE Articles & blogs ever? I'll chime in when I have more time on my hands (and awake)

I would have to take Zelda, Tetris and Ice Hockey because that game looks to be Blades of Steel. I would take those cause I own and play all 3 of them still!

Off to read about Kool-aid!

Super Mario

Mike Tyson's Punch Out

Anticipation
(Everyone I knew always hated this game, but for some reason I have been completely in love with it since the moment we met, and ooo I can hear that music playing in my head right now)

Chestnuts roasted by Hot Pocket @ 07/17/2006 12:49 AM EST

From the poster only, mine would have to be:

1 - Dragon Warrior
2 - Tetris
3 - Super Mario Bros. 2

It was hard on that last one - Punch-Out! for it's replayability? No, because Tyson always pissed me off. Metroid for some good shootin'? Maybe, but nostalgia and that spooky mothafucka mask lead me to pick Mario 2.

Why Dragon Warrior as number 1? That was a looooooooong, satisfying game. I remember I would keep going back to the princess after I saved her, just to get her to say "I love thee." (LOOOOOSER!)

Ahhh, ultimately useless emotional investment - where else are you outside of a Zelda game?

Reading about Ice Blue Kool-aid is making me want one of thos Kool-aid slushies they sell at the movies.

I used to be able to get Kool-aid ice cream floats at a Golden Griddle. Then the resturant changed owners and it go taken off the menu. Mmmm so thristy!

For my fav blog, I'm gonna have to go with the popular vote and say the Photog blog. It was after reading that blog I decided I would start to post on X-E blogs cause everyone on here is just so awesome!Plus I love saying Photog blog.
For my favorite article, hmm, I would have to say the Macys Thanksgiving parades are always cool. Whenever I watch an American Holiday movie at some point the characters are watching the parade, and it makes me feel like I missed out on something really big. So when I come here I get to read and see all the best parts. I like the silly articles too where it involves toys, action figures, drawings or wrestling thumbs. It's just goofy enough to be right up my alley.

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 07/17/2006 01:00 AM EST

I'll take both Zelda games and Tetris. I never played Dragon Warrior, so I'm not gambling on it, though I don't know how can you go wrong with a game named "Dragon" anything. I was totally going to say ice hockey, but unless I have someone stranded on this island with me, to kick their ass in 2 player mode, it wouldn't be as much fun.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 01:11 AM EST

Obviously I misread the Q.

I take back Mario Bros 3, because it's not on the poster. I'll replace it with that Power Pad Burgertime game. That looks pretty cool.

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 07/17/2006 01:18 AM EST

I used to play Super Mario, Contra, Tetris, Ice Climber, Mappy, Sky Destroyer, Lode Runner and Bomber Man. I still playing them in my computer and the emulator.

Emulators rules.

A few years more and we will be able to download a Game Cube Emulator and its games!

first time potsting, i'm so freakin excited. that said, the three games i'd play off the poster on a desert island would probably be zelda (1), mario (1) and metroid. i suck balls at the original metroid because i never know where to go (i need some direction in life, dammit!) and i'm bad at zelda 1 for the same reason. however, with all that free time on this island i'd have to get good at at least one of them, right?

... right?

Chestnuts roasted by zacH @ 07/17/2006 01:36 AM EST

Tetris (given), Zelda 2 (I... I haven't beat it yet...), and Dance Aerobics (To build up my buns and thighs)

I suppose I'm being evil for saying no to the big 3; Mario, Link, and Samus but if we're going by what will keep me occupied on an island for a few months I'd want something I wouldn't get bored with. I've done Mario, Zelda, and Metroid waaaaaay too many times.
If I can take one not on the poster I want Gradius.

I have a secret confession to make, as much as I love eating blue things because they're blue, I hate raspberry. The only thing I hate more is blue raspberry. It tastes like butt.

Chestnuts roasted by RedLightBulbs @ 07/17/2006 01:41 AM EST

Well, I suppose tetris would be the only game necessary for me. Once I get into a tetris groove, I tend to forget that there are other games that are not tetris. Since the other two would be freebies anyway, I'd pick Hogans Alley for some lightgun fun, and Ice Hockey. Blades of Steel was a killer game, but it's not on the list. It still looks like the most fun sports game on there, since they don't have Tecmo Bowl or Arch Rivals on there.

Chestnuts roasted by Phayke @ 07/17/2006 02:19 AM EST

1) Zelda (I think this is standard for everyone)
2) Tetris, the unauthorized Tengen version
3) Arkanoid

Where's Mario? Hey, I'm on an ISLAND; I have to pick the three that will last me the longest. If I take Mario 3 I'd play up to a really frustrating part and then give up.

Matt said in this one:
Nobody understood how something so chic and pop could've been eliminated from the market, leading to such legends as original Berry Blue looking too similar to windshield wiper fluid for Kraft to sell it.

Sooooo, it was an urban legend, was it? It's still written as fact in your Berry Blue review...might wanna change it one of these years when you have a free minute.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 07/17/2006 02:42 AM EST

Tetris
Zelda
Mario 2
Wouldn't gamble on DW, and Mario has been played past the point of no return already.
Metroid is tempting, but Mario 2 is a bit more charming. Off to read the Kool-Aid article. Being in the UK sucks; when I was in the states I could catch these updates within the first 5 posts. Blasted 6 hour difference!

I'm going yo hafta say Tetris first and foremost. That game can really waste the time away for me. My next choice woud be Super Mario Bros., because that game also eats up a lot of my time. And then I'd pick DanceAerobics, cuz I'm gonna need sum exercise if I'm gonna live on that Island all by myself. But that's only if the NES comes with a Power Pad. Otherwise, I pick Donkey Kong. Why? Cuz it's a fucking classic!

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 07/17/2006 05:35 AM EST

I'd be accidentally stranded (cuz no way would I intentionally get stuck on a tiny island even WITH electricity) still clutching: RC Pro-AM, Excitebike and Pinball because those are more or less repetitive and there's no story to get bored with. Plus I was heavily addicted to them as a child. Particularly RC Pro-AM... it was a real mindwarper because after seven straight hours of it, I went for a ride in a car and remember wondering why we couldn't just missle the cars ahead of us out of the way. smile

Chestnuts roasted by Todd @ 07/17/2006 05:58 AM EST

1 - Punchout
2 - Dragon Warrior (Oh the countless hours wasted building up your experience...ha ha!)
3 - EXCITEBIKE!

This is the easiest question I've ever been asked:

The legend of Zelda
Zelda II
Tetris

Chestnuts roasted by B-Dawg @ 07/17/2006 09:33 AM EST

I pick Super Mario Bros-because after all these years,it's still THE game to me,I still play it to this day.
Excitebike-This was the first non-hand-me-down,non-bundeled-with-system game I owned, and I still get really into it. Plus, you can make your own tracks and test yourself,so you're not going to get sick of it easily.
Ice Hockey-a great game, which actually has no nolstalgia to me. I dled it last year when I was thinking Blades of Steel is kind of shit.

If this wasn't limited to the poster,I would remove Ice Hockey and take Pac-Man. Honorable mentions would be Mappy and Galaga.

Since we're talking about old school video games, anyone here have Point Blank DS yet? It's awesome,a lightgun game you play with the stylus. No thinking, puzzle solving and gamefaqs.com checking, just blam blam blam! An old school style reflexes game. It also includes 3 "Chuck E.Cheese" whack-a-mole style games. (Yes,the alligator one is in there!) I'm totally addicted to Cracky Crab right now.

I remember when Toys "R" US used to only have tickets for the old SNES and Genesis games out on the floor, and you would pay and pick them up at customer service. I got "Head on Soccer" for the SNES system, which is a great game if you have not played it yet. On the ride home, I ripped that thing open and it had a huge poster with like every SNES game ever.

On you poster, the top three would be:
1. Golf
2. Super Mario Bros.
3. Ice Hockey

I know NES sports games sucked, but I have a soft spot for them.

Chestnuts roasted by Charlie @ 07/17/2006 09:56 AM EST

This is my favorite audience participation event from X-E ever.

2 of my 3 games to choose are obvious:
Tetris
Golf

Tetris is simplistic, yet it is still my favorite long term game ever. My Lines record is 239. And Golf? I’ve had it forever, but I still play it once in a while, so there is definitely some replay value there. Actually, my NES Golf has a story behind it having to do with Nintendo posters. When I got my brand new NES back in ’86, I only had SMB. A much older friend (who could drive) was heading to a shopping mall, and my mom decided I needed another game to play, so she gave him money, and I chose 2 games from the original NES poster. I said to get Excitebike, and if they didn’t have that, then get Popeye. So, I wait at home in anticipation… which of those 2 will it be? Oh, the hours of fun to be had. Then, he comes back with… GOLF?! What a disappointing experience. Luckily, it turned out to be an entertaining game (I got those other 2 later).

On to my 3rd game. I see that I’m only stuck on the island for a few months, so I’ve decided to go with Faxanadu. It’s the only Adventure series game that I haven’t really played.

Now, one last thing to point out, is something that always sticks out when I look at this NES poster. That black part in the middle (underneath Excitebike) ALWAYS makes me start thinking of Batman. Fairly obvious to see, but there are his 2 pointy ears, and a shoulder that’s a little bit high.

Chestnuts roasted by rizz @ 07/17/2006 10:04 AM EST

Super Mario bros.
Super Mario bros. 2
Donkey Kong Classics

Honestly this is one of the worst selections I've ever seen on these posters.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 07/17/2006 10:15 AM EST

Man, I have to narrow down six awesome games to just three?! Aight, here goes...

1. Super Mario Bros. 2
2. Zelda 2
3. Punch Out

After getting temporarily bored of these games, I would seek the nearest deserted island and find which ever one of you chose RC Pro-Am, Super Mario Bros., and Legend of Zelda. I could bring my games, some WWF Ice Cream Bars and a case of 20 year old Ecto Cooler and we'd be all set.

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 07/17/2006 10:59 AM EST

Ahh, one of you guys should know this. What's that NES game where the guy says "You can't shoot me"? But it's like a real voice. It's just about the only voicing in the game. What is it!!! It's driving me crazy!

Maybe it wasn't a NES game...Genesis?...but it was a game nontheless. Hmmm...

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 07/17/2006 11:06 AM EST

Since I just recently got rid of my 8-bit NES (Got sick of shoving the second game on top and trying to get that damned red light to stop blinking) and discoverd emulators, I can make my three choices definitive ...

-Donkey Kong Classics (I have a soft spot for irrate apes)

-Legend of Zelda (I heart Link)

-Tetris (Though it's not the same without the rectangular controller biting into your hands after the third straight hour of play)

Other favorites NOT listed:

Jeopardy!, Blades of Steel, TMNT, Final Fantasy

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 07/17/2006 11:17 AM EST

Easy. Zelda, Rad Racer & Dragon Warrior. The first two are old stand-bys. Dragon Warrior is so I don't get TOO bored.

Chestnuts roasted by Mike Fireball @ 07/17/2006 11:35 AM EST

1. Metroid (I always get lost in Metroid, so I could spend all my free time making a map of the game for myself. It would probably be more efficient to make a map of the desert island that I am stranded on, but Metroid is way more fun.)

2. Zelda II (Since there is no one to talk to on the island, at least I can go in the towns on the game and talk to people. Except that one guy that runs by and says "I know nothing." I hate him.)

3. Short Order/Eggsplode with Power Pad (To keep in shape on the island. Again, my time would be better spent gathering food and building shelter, but who wants to do WORK?) Plus it is two games in one, the Burger-building "Short Order" and the Egg-stomping "Eggsplode". I have fond memories of playing Short Order, chanting "burger, cheese, burger, lettuce, lettuce" with my brother standing by to help me remember what comes next.

Chestnuts roasted by LuLu @ 07/17/2006 11:44 AM EST

Hmmmm, this is tough.
(1) TETRIS- The obvious choice- after awhile, I would forget I was on an island, I get SO into that game. We used to play at college (2 player SNES version) and the loser would always have to terrible things. I only lost ONCE, but it meant I had to drink tabasco sauce. Ouch.

(2) Zelda- I love the SNES version, but sadly never ever played the NES version. I have always wanted to, so here's a perfect opportunity.

(3) EXCITEBIKE- Man, I loved this game. Especially the fact that you can build your own tracks. That doesn't get old.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 07/17/2006 12:04 PM EST

Ignoring the poster-only rule...

1) Tengen Tetris. Best Version of Tetris, EVER.

2) Super Mario Bros. 3. I will never tire of this game. I remember I got it for Christmas, and we were at my grandmother's house, which was a few hours away from my NES. I must have read the manual cover to cover about 10 times in anticipation.

3) Rather than mention Zelda or Metroid or CastleVania or something like that, I'm going to have to go with "Ducktales" from Capcom. Still one of my favorite games. I might get tired of it faster that Tetris or SMB3, but I'd still like to have it with me.

-----
Charlie: My TRU is still set up the "Old" way (They still have a few "World of Nintendo" banners, too), where you have to get the ticket and take it to the counter. Anybody else's TRU still not remodeled to the "new" format?

Cameron T.: Wow, you mean you still have the long ailses that shoot straight back through the store?

There are rumours of it actually going back to that, or something similar. I'm thinking they will just keep the sections, but instead of the "X" sections, they will put straight ailses in. People steal too much stuff in the "back of the X's" as we call it.

(Damn you, Greymatter!!)

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 12:14 PM EST

Yeah, the TRU where I live has only done a "half" remodel...There are still straight aisles for about 3/4 of the store, with a big open section in the middle with pre-school and kids toys. But even these are still the straight Aisles, just with shelves that are only 3 feet tall.

The TRU in my hometown, on the other hand, remodeled years ago. I hate the "Xs" as you call them..it just isn't as fun to browse the aisles, and it seems like there's always crap lying all about in disarry (although maybe that's just due to incompetent workers).

Hopefully the TRU where I am now will not change...I would doubt it, since TRU was having financial troubles, anyway...

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 07/17/2006 12:44 PM EST

That sounds like a strange store. I've never seen one set up like that.

Alot of people complain about the X's - they say it's too much of a maze. And, yeah, some stores do just have a bunch of incompetent workers, but honestly, at our store (I work at one, ya know. :p) we really don't even bother to straighten throughout the day (unless it's really horrible or we're just that bored) because once you do, it only takes one family to come right along behind you and F up everything you just did. You know how annoying that is? Our motto is "I hate people."

Tetris- I could play it practally forever. I have it for GB, a couple of NES on a Chip TV games, and a dance pad game with the Tengen version on it. Playing Tetris with your feet is a very unique experience.

Zelda- All the years I've had it, I have never completed the Second Quest.

Punch-Out- Never had the game, getting Gilligan'd would be a good opportunity to play it.

I wonder if that TRU that was supposed to be haunted is still operational?

Ah yes, Ryane, I believe that would be the motto of all customer service workers. I've said those very words many times this month, after being hung up on by self-important phone receptionists (I've been a receptionist myself, so I think I'm allowed to say that).
My picks would be SMB 2, Dr. Mario and Tetris (I can't make out the poster so I'm pretending those are all on there). My latest obsession is Bejeweled 2, which is puzzling and difficult without rising to Tetris levels of frustration.
Anybody remember a Gameboy game where you played a kid being carried around the world by balloons? As you got hit, they would pop until you fell to your death. Can anyone name it?

I'd have to agree with you Matt on bringing Mike Tyson's Punch Out with me. I've played that game about 50,000 times, and it doesn't get old.

The 2nd game I'd bring would be Maniac Mansion, because there's about 3 different ways to beat the game with different endings.

The 3rd game would have to be Castlevania. I love that game, and could never beat Dracula when I was younger. I've since then beaten Drac on an emulator version.

It's called (and I'm not lying or bullshitting you here) "Balloon Kid". I still have it. I bought it in the sixth grade and still play it on my GameBoy Color, along with Dr. Mario (and that killer music that accompanies it), the original Tetris that came with my black-and-white Gameboy and the green Final Fantasy.

Well, I was negative three years old when the NES was released, but I bought a Chinese hardware clone last October and I'm still in the process of researching, playing, and discovering all these games for the first time, so bear this in mind as you read my answers.

Super Mario Bros. for a first pick. That was one of the first two games that I bought, the other being Double Dragon. (I actually got the idea of buying an NES in the first place after watching my cousin's VHS copy of "The Wizard"wink. Next, Dragon Warrior. Never played it before, but I've heard good things for the initial installment, and it seems like a good long game; you've gotta have one of those. Finally, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Haven't played this one either, but that's only because I haven't just yet found a cartridge for sale. And I leave you with this hint of bonus trivia: In the Japanese iteration of the Street Fighter franchise, Balrog is named M. Bison. Man, none of the store around here carry any good Kool-Aid flavors. I stopped at Buy Rite Liquidators (where food goes to die) in 97° fucking degree weather and had to dig through bins of old packets just to get some fucking Berry Blue and Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade Twists. Thankfully someone put a pizza cutter in the bin so I nearly cut myself grabbing some Magic Twists.

X-E is a terrible influence on me.

1.) GI Joe 1-Mainly because you have to beat it 3 times to get to Commander, and I can hardly beat it once. I would probably spend all my time on this. Its so fikkin addicitve, you don't want to give up. I still can't get past Metal Head, so trying to beat the game three times to beat Commander, seems like an afternoon off from work.

2.)Time Lord-My favorite as a kid.

3.) Double Dribble-Just because I need a sports game. Bulls stil rule.

SMB2, Dragon (Quest) Warrior, and Metroid. All games that, at least for me personally, still stand the test of time.

While I very much enjoy Super Mario 3, I sort of wonder what the world would be like if Nintendo had decided to go with the Doki Doki Panic style gameplay for the rest of the series. In some weird way, SMB2 is my favorite Mario game of all.

I'd go for Mario 2 and Metroid for good games, and since I find it necessary to own at least one shitty game, I'd go try out that Barker Bill's Trick Shooting. That looks kind of shitty.

Also, I've never played Dragon Warrior, but that screencap on the poster looks very much like The Adventure of Link.

Also, I've been drinking the new version of the Ice Blue for the past few days.
That stuff is G-E-W-D gewd.

JLAJRC: Before you get too freaked out, two-thirds of Americans have flouride added to their water supplies, and it's naturally occurring in most water sources. In fact, all the rural kids where I grew up took flouride supplements because a combination of clay-based sand and a calcium carbonite caprock in our area meant we were drawing well water from a flouride-free source. Interestingly enough, studies by the ADA have linked increased levels of tooth decay in the current generation of children to protective parents giving them bottled water instead of filtered tapwater.

Oh, and the government uses it to control your mind.

So instead of participating in an 8-bit NES conversation, I'm discussing the chemical makeup of our water supply. Does that make me more or less of a nerd?

Chestnuts roasted by Loneman1 @ 07/17/2006 08:43 PM EST

Oooh, this is a toughie - some of those games are old favorites - but I'm going to run with:

Excitebike (my sisters and I got endless hours of fun out of the customizeable tracks)
The Legend of Zelda (And while we're on the subject of "endless hours of fun," I still haven't beaten this in real life)
Anticipation (We used to rent this one every other day. Great team game, too.)

Honorable Mention goes to the two Mario games and Tetris.

I've actually seen Ice Blue Raspberry Kool Aid before. Don't know if it's at the Audobon Acme (grocery store) - will have to check.

Ok, I ended up putting more thought into this than I thought I would:

1) Final Fantasy. I have always been a huge RPG fan. There are many RPGs I've played, finished, and never looked back. To this day, in a world of Xboxes, playstations, and ridiculously addictive online PC RPGs, I still bust out the original FF now and then. This game has tons of replayability. Bored? Try a party of white mages (one of the original Nintendo Power challenges!)

2)Techmo Super Bowl. Now, I'm not usually a huge sports game fan. This game is one of the few sports games that rules for both the stats and the actual gameplay. Its a ton of fun to see how many passing yards or sacks you can rack up in a season. Plus, Bo Jackson is in this game and Bo knows NES!

3) River City Ransom. This one is simple. This is the only game that I've ever played that you can pick up the people you beat up and beat up other people WITH them!!! Say that out loud, it makes it sound even cooler! I mean, its one thing if Mario kicks a turtle shell around, but imagine if the flower let him chuck goombas at other goombas!

Chestnuts roasted by Ryle @ 07/17/2006 10:49 PM EST

It would be hard to pick three from there, but Id go with:
1)Zelda 2. Blasphemy, I know, but Ive beaten part 1 six ways from (to?) sunday, but I have yet to beat part 2.
2)Metroid. If it came down to it, it would be a close race between this and Mario 1, but Metroid squeaks by, for me at least.
3) Tetris. There are other games I would enjoy more in the short run (excitebike, punch out), but this Tetris will, never, ever ever ever get old. If solitaire or taipei were out for Nintendo, it would be a much tougher choice for third.

btw, Cobra Triangle is an AWESOME game. I dont think Ive thought about, let along played, the game for 10+ years, but goddamn I loved it. Ebay, here I come!

Anyhow, I said I couldn't wait for another Halloween Countdown, or to see Ghost With The Most again.

Also, I wanna add that TRU is starting a "Toy Blowout". What this means is, the stuff that's been around forever, or is just on clearance, will keep getting marked down, pretty much each week, until it goes, because we're all sick of looking at it, and have no room for the ton of new stuff that we are getting in stock now if we keep this crap.

This is way harder than it should be.

1. Super Mario Brothers 2- Replay value is in beating every world with every character. I never did do that.

2. Zelda 2- I never beat it, and even though I have it for my DS, I never seem to get around to playing it.

3. Dragon Warrior- I had a friend who had it and would never let me borrow it or even play it at his house. It looked really fun.

Whoa- River City Ransom was on that poster?? (I couldn't make it enlarge) Now THAT was a cool game- I actually liked it better than Double Dragon- in many ways it was a rip-off (2 brothers beating people up all over town) but in other ways it had more depth to the game- you could collect money and then decided which food items to buy at restaurants- which gives you more energy- fries or vegetables?? Great game. Man, I totally forgot about that one.

Excitebike Baby! I still play that with an emulator.
Donkey Kong for nostalgia's sake - I spent at least $10,000 on that game when I was a kid. Well, maybe not that much.
Football - not quite at Tecmo level but the NES Play Action is still good football.

I'm buying my son a Nintendo DS today since he's been a really good kid this summer. Plus, I don't want to hear him whine about the long drive we're taking tomorrow for our vacation. I'll probably end up playing it more than he does, though. Any suggestions for a kid's first DS game?

Oooh now this is a good thread...

I would have to go with:

Zelda II: This was a great game that I clocked many hours on and can totally see myself playing it again. It took up a huge portion of one summer home from school. Such fond memories. smile

Metroid: Ahh another classic. Samus Aran and enough exploring to keep anyone busy for awhile. Who can forget the code Justin Bailey too?

Tetris: Was tempted to pick Faxanadu due to a Faxanadu fixation when I was younger but with two actiony oriented questing games already on my list, I would probably want a nice Tetris break. You can never go wrong with TETRIS!

As for DS games:

I would go with Mario 64. It can be picked up fairly cheaply, has ALOT of mini games to unlock and is a fun platformer that has really held up over the years...
New Super Mario Bros is good but can be VERY frustrating at times.

Chestnuts roasted by Kittycatgirl @ 07/18/2006 12:52 PM EST

Sadly, the DS only plays GBA games (the smaller black carts). It doesn't have the z80 processor necessary to play orginal game boy (DMG) and Game Boy Color (GBC) games. So you'll have to keep your older system (whatever it is) to play those games. Or just pick up a GBA SP...they're pretty cheap now...

Yeah, just hold onto the GBA/GBASP. If you have the SP, it uses the same charger as the DS, so that helps keep wires down and simplify things. As for a game, I suggest Meteos if you like puzzle games.

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 07/18/2006 03:41 PM EST

If you're going to get a DS, get a DS Lite. No reason to get the old DS now. The advantages of the Lite make it the clear choice.

However, the Lite does NOT use the same charger of the GBA SP..

I have this very poster in my den. (Just need to find a decent frame for it so my wife will allow me to put it up) I scored it when I recently aquired a practically brand-spanking new NES system from my grandma-in-law's attic. I think it was owned by her late husband who bought it and only played it for like a month before putting it away. Gotta love old people. As for my picks, I'd go with: 1.Tetris, because it's freaking Tetris 2.Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! because it's timeless and just a lot of fun. and 3.Metroid because I never really played that much even though I owned and beat Metroid 2 on gameboy.
My vote for game not on the poster would have to be Bubble Bobble if only for the kick-ass repetitive soundtrack.

Top of the list would be Mario Bros. for the simple fact that it never gets old to me because I am the only person in the Nintendo generation to have never beaten the game. Though I love video games, I suck at them tremendously. I am better at the more difficult games today than I was at the simpler ones of yesteryear.

Second game would be Cobra Triangle. I loved that game so much, but I never bought it. Much like Deja Vu (anyone remember that one?), I rented it every weekend and played it for 36 hours straight, then returned it to the shelf for five days.

For my third and final game, I would have to say that I would take Metroid along. Though I only remember enough to get me through the first level (thank god for emulators), I remember thinking it was the best fucking thing ever made, next to the first Contra and Maniac Mansion.

here's the thing.

the ICE BLUE raspberry lemonade packaging doesn't have any blueberries on it. I thought I might've just been inadvertantly drunk while reading, but on further inspection I'm right.

This isn't to say the packaging doesn't have BLUE BERRIES. They appear to have drawn a raspberry and colored it blue, but, there aren't any blueberries in the traditional (read actually exist) sense.

So, reading further on about how blueberries and lemons compliment one another, I must ask, where the hell did these blueberries come from and what the jesus happened to the blue colored raspberries? Perhaps a berries' flavour is far more based on it's coloring then I could've ever imagined. Am I just a confused little boy or am I on to something?

Also, seeing as there's a bunch of NES talk going on.. give me River City Ransom and fuck everything else (well, not really, i'll also take metroid and kid icarus off the top of my head.. )
