I hate online traffic school. I recently rolled my car, and the asshole cop on the scene gave me a ticket that, in Idaho, could result in a $500 fine and possibly jail time. What was my crime? I fell asleep.

Now, I could understand if I'd been speeding, driving recklessly, or drunk. But I was coming home from work after putting in some overtime. I was not being a menace. I was actually thinking about finding a place to pull over and take a nap. However, the road through the Idaho desert doesn't exactly have lot of rest stops, or even paved shoulders.

Why didn't I lie to him and tell him that I swerved to miss a deer and lost control? Because I try very hard to be an honest person. So instead of lying I innocently told him what happened. What's worse, I went to the station a couple days later when he asked me to come in and give a taped statement. He waited until after I had convicted myself of "Inattentive Driving" until he told me I was being charged. Is that even legal!?

I went to court to fight the ticket, and the prosecutor refused to dismiss the charges. He did reduce them, and my lawyer told me I could do online traffic school to get the points off my license.

So I now have online traffic school open in another window. However, it's completely stupid. Now, I'm no English major (I'm an engineer), but I do know the difference between "affect" and "effect," as well as "they're" and "their." Apparently the authors of this online course do not. Reading this stuff is flat-out painful.

Even worse, the questions are so simple-minded that I can answer them all correctly without reading the material. However, there's a minimum time you're supposed to spend on each section, usually 25-35 minutes. However, I can skim the material and answer the questions in under five.

If you try and submit your answers before their timer is up, it resets and you have to start over. I'd just do each section and go do something else while I wait for the timer to count down if it wasn't for the popups. See, they popup a security question to verify your identity at random times. There's no noise to grab your attention, and you have to answer in under two minutes. So basically I have to keep at least half an eye on the computer and wait for the time to be up.

The total time is six hours. SIX HOURS! I could have the whole damn thing completed in about an hour. So now I'm spending my Saturday staring blankly at my computer, instead of doing something fun. That's what I do at work! What's worse is that this is my first day off after six days on, and tomorrow starts another six days on. My sweet, sweet recreational time has been pre-empted by morons obsessed with how much time I spend "studying" material I already know.

ARRRGGGHHHH!

Spaz,

I had to do online traffic school in January. What a pain!! But I would much rather do it on the internet than have to sit in a class and listen to some person talk for 6 hours. At least online you can skim through the chapter and then do something else while you wait for the timer to run out. When I did mine, the timer didn't actually show the correct time, and so I ended up taking 2 hours on a section that only had to be 30 minutes!!

And the questions are so dumb. Mine had a bunch of true/false...pretty much stuff like "True or false - you should not drive while you are drunk." "True or false - you should pay attention to your surroundings while driving." Let me think about that one...

I'm depressed. I gotta fucking close every night that I work this coming week. Sure, I can sleep in, but I hate closing!

And I just read some MySpace pages, or whatever they are called, of some of the people I work with. Sad when you find out more about them in 5 minutes than you do in 3 years.

Matt, I just found out that there is one of those Hostess bakery places, like a "Hostess outlet store" I guess, right near me. I thought I remembered that you went to one when searching for the TMNT pies or Chocodiles or something. Just wanted to let you know that I plan on heading over there soon to see if I can find some long-expired, probably crystalized pudding pies. The place didn't look like the cleanest place ever, so it's not totally outside the realm of possibility! (ok, yes it is but whatever)

Chestnuts roasted by yowza @ 07/15/2006 08:39 PM EST

Based on past experiences with dirty-but-fun Hostess outlets, you probably won't find old stuff there outside of signage, but you will find things your local markets don't sell. smile

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/15/2006 08:45 PM EST

Man, I gotta hit me up one of those outlets. I haven't hung out with any dirty-but-fun hostesses since my last stint as a busboy.

When i was 8 i didn't do my penmanship homework. I thought i had a great excuse, so the next day when the teacher asked me why it wasn't done I told her, "A Boglin ate my homework." I even brought mine in to show her, which in retrospect completely discredited my excuse. Yeah i got my name on the board with two checks.

Chestnuts roasted by Chives @ 07/15/2006 09:12 PM EST

Spaz, not to be too mean or anything, but how does rolling your car *not* qualify as being a menace on the road? You rolled your car one way because you were falling asleep, but it could just as easily have been into oncoming traffic. While I know the whole ticket situation is annoying, a driver who is falling asleep really is just as dangerous as a drunk driver, and for the same reasons -- they're not able to focus on what they're doing, and alertness and reflexes are both impaired.

Tickets suck. Traffic school sucks (I assume.) But getting into an accident because you can't stay awake sucks worse. I have to side with the cop on this one; if you feel tired enough that you might fall asleep, take a nap *before* driving.

Incidentally, very few cops will buy the "avoiding a deer" reason, unless they can actually see it's true.

I love Hostess Outlets as well. They usually have cheap jam too. (That's my favorite part.) Is it hellishly hot for anyone elsethis weekend? It's like a hundred degrees here with crazy humidity. I do not like it. You'd think with minus twenty in the winter we'd never get this hot.

oh yeah, jedoc Pie rules all.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 07/15/2006 09:41 PM EST

Yeah, mine's a pretty simple recipe. Steak, mushrooms, onions, ale, and beef stock. No creative internal organs. Of course, to really capture the essence of a UK pub-pie, I should probably include tobacco in the seasonings.

Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 07/15/2006 09:41 PM EST

In my experience the spam block resets when there's a new post, so I'm expecting this to go through *fingers crossed*
Just yesterday I resolved to shop more often at the Hostess "day old bakery", along with the local produce market, in the interest of saving on grocery bills. Frosted donettes are in my future.
I don't have a "best" choice, just a lot of favorites. Photog is a given when it comes to blogs, but some of the greatest threads have been random surveys.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/15/2006 09:41 PM EST

I don't have any Hostess outlets near me, but I do have the Godiva outlet! Mmm... truffles.

I rolled my car the other day kinda sorta. It was a baaaad day. We were getting raped up the ass with backlogged work due to vacations and big online sales so even though it was my late day I stayed an extra hour (til 9pm). Around 8:45 I was rapping up and I started hearing low rumbles, followed by enourmous claps of thunder and lightening and then pouring rain. Of course my umbrella was in my car. So I had to go outside in the POURING rain, and the path to the parking lot was so flooded I had to take my flip-flops off just to walk. Then I got my drenched ass in my car and turned it on. Only since it was thundering and raining so loudly, I didn't notice my engine didn't turn over and the "Check engine" light was on, assumidly from rain. So as I put it in drive, my car began rolling forward from the middle aisle until I ran into the guard rail. The brakes didn't stop me. So after I hit I put it in park and turned off the car.

I turned it back on after my fit was over, the engine kicked over and I floored it in reverse and went along in the pitch black night dodging spilled trashcans in the road on the way home. Then I came home and ate like 10 mozzerlla sticks.

My favorite X-E articles? The stories of Matt's vacations, from Disney World to Wildwood. His Wildwood articles are what turned me into a fan. I thought I was the only one who spent 50 bucks trying to win Pokemon dolls at Gateway.

Matt, I'm so glad you're better. Being sick is not fun to begin with, but it's lousy to be sick in the summer. In the winter, you're supposed to be doing stuff like cuddling under 15 blankets and eating soup anyway, but it just doesn't seem right when everyone else is out swimming, biking, and drinking tropical cocktails with little umbrellas in them.

Oooh, and I'm finally near a Hostess Outlet, on the Black Horse Pike! It's a little far down from me, so I don't know if I'll be going there anytime soon, but it's nice to know they do exist in Southern New Jersey.

Well, just to add to the complaining a little, I rolled my ankle going down the stairs to the train on my way to work on Thurs. My ankle didn't hurt too much, but my shin where I caught myself 5 stairs later did. I pretty much tried to walk it off, but the stabbing pain when I walked got old after a while. I went home at lunch, got some x-rays to make sure that I didn't crack anything, then got Friday off for my troubles. It's still hard to walk up and down stairs, but other then that, I should be good by Monday. It turned out to be a really nice long weekend with my wife, so I'm sort of happy about it, except the whole agony and pain bit.

Ryane, Jeff, and Rich - I've "read somewhere" that DVD Shrink works well if you have the time, as it can take a while to proccess. If you have more disk space then time (5 - 8.5 gb per DVD), use DVD Decrypter to rip the files to your HD and then proccess them later with DVD Shrink (Decrypter also strips copy protection). If you want something other then a hard copy (Divx or Xvid avi) then you can use a VOB joiner and then proccess with something like SUPER or Media Coder. There are lots of tutorials, but I like these programs best.

Chestnuts roasted by Mad Cow @ 07/15/2006 11:45 PM EST

Even though I wasn't part of it, I'd have to say Photog is the best blog. As far as articles, it's the Adventures all the way. My fav is Bar Harbor Maine, followed closely by the Wildwood/Seaside Heights ones. But of course the menagerie of Bulbasaur quests are A+ as well. I think I've said it before, but I really want to do that roadtrip myself. Hit Bar Harbor before the 5th, STAY THERE all Desperation/Regulators style, and hit WW/SSHs when the summer kick starts. Seeing American Science and Surplus wouldn't be half-bad either.

I finally bought ROTS today. And I almost bought the original trilogy, but forgot my checkbook @ home sad I know, I know I ruined the mindf*** that was owning Ep. II and Ep. II alone. But I had to have Revenge, I had to. "YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER!!" Love you Hayden, always will.

Clerks II got a 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes!! Sorry to make this a long post, but I'm sure I won't be allowed to post again tonight. So enjoy, and LATER!

So sorry to doublepost, if it goes through at all smile

but, thank you kb for drudging up some painful memories. It's not really your fault though. I'd like to follow in the footsteps of the Beasties and officially apologize for what I posted in the blogs immediately preceding and following the first SNT. I mean, I know I'm still weird beyond recognition, but those posts were born of pain and seperation and are more than a little embarrasing to read. Mea culpa.

And apologies to the Full Corey Haim Video Diary Review for not mentioning you in my initial post tonight. How could I forget, literally, the funniest thing I have EVER read. For shame, for shame.

I guess this extremely morbid thought comes from the last thread but what if one of us died? It would never be known. I once recieved an email from an alleged widow of someone who won one of my ebay auctions (EVIL DEAD 2 VHS. I shouldn't say alleged, I just checked his feedback and I am still the last transaction). I don't think anyone would lie like that to get out of 3.50. Bizarre.

MRL-

Respectfully, I disagree. Yes, it was foolish of me to try and drive home. I should have cancelled my plans for the afternoon and taken a nap in the parking lot. However, giving me a ticket was just kicking me while I was down. I was already out a bunch on my brand new car. It was only five months old, and I'd made a $3000 down payment on it that I did NOT get back. Also, the severity of the ticket was completely uncalled for. A (possibly) $500 misdemeanor is over the fucking top when a guy is only in trouble because was tired of being at work and just wanted to get home.

Regarding your comment about oncoming traffic, I do feel very lucky that I didn't hurt anyone. In my defense, it's an hour and a half drive along a deserted highway in the desert. There was very little traffic.

In addition, asking me to make a statement before telling me that I was going to be charged was, in my mind, unethical. Had I known, I could have exercised my right to remain silent.

I added it all up, and the total cost of my accident was:
$2000- down payment on a new car
$1000- lawyer
$120- traffic fines and traffic school
$1800 (minimum)- increased insurance costs over the next three years

Luckily, I had gap insurance and didn't owe anything on the totalled car.

Anyway, I was already out $3800 bucks on the deal BEFORE the ticket. The extra $1120 it cost me because the cop gave me a ticket is what I'm protesting. I do not deny that driving while sleepy is foolish, and I implore everyone to learn from my mistake. However, I think the pain I went through (small injury), going without a car for 2 months while I wait for my replacement to arrive, and the money I spent on another down payment and the increased insurance costs were more than punishment enough.

Some favorite X-E articles that come to mind include the infamous Hungry Man Breakfast article, the Hulk reviewing his fine movie tie-in products, the re-creating the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving... there are too many to list!! I also REALLY enjoy the holidays at X-E, I have been here through three Christmas countdowns. Also, I like the annual Macy's Parade reviews.

This reminds me, is there an archive page someplace that lists ALL of the X-E articles from the very beginning of time? I hate having to rely on my foggy memory and the search box for anything earlier than the Garbage Pail Kids snappers on the main page.

Thanks and keep up the great work on the site!

Actually somebody on a message board (yesterdayland.org) linked to the hungryman breakfast review for some reason and I just read and read after that. This was the beginning of the Halloween countdown, two Halloween's ago. So this is my third one I will spend with X-E. My sister's were confused when they saw me looking at commerical after old commerical. Good times heh. My oldest sister asked me, "why do you have a thing for commercials now?"

I love the chocodile one never having one though is confusing but I love the pictures. I love the thought of eating something a long time ago and knowing it's hard to get but you can still get it somehow. When he got all of those random things from the video store. I love those stores because the stuff in there is SO OLD. Another reason why I love goodwill and garage sales. They are getting so you can goto like 7 a day recently, I have been begging my roommate to goto them, either they suck or he won't let me sad I can't go on ebay so doing the "online garage sale" thang can't work out either oh well.

The Manimal: Hah, bugger that. When I die, you'll all be fully aware of it. Less of the "peacefully in his sleep" and more of the "visible from orbit" and "international community reeling," right?

Seriously, though, that is an oddly compelling thought. When you really think about it, it's a bit strange that there aren't more "ghost in the machine" urban legends floating around about this sort of thing. What does that say? That we're not as intimidated by the internet as we are, for instance, microwaves? Any folklorists on the board today?

My personal favorite articles are the internet scams. The absolute best one was where Matt sold moss, twigs, dirt, and rocks from his backyard as a "Magical Mystery Kit" or some such thing. The fact he sold it at all was hilarious, but he sold it for a lot- like 10 or 20 bucks, plus shipping.

I also liked the tributes to less popular Transformers. You know, I haven't seen a TF or G.I. Joe article on here in a long time. That makes me sad.

The Worst Game Room was a great one! Good call.

My favorite article is the one about the Wizard movie. Hard to believe that they got away with a colossal advertisement for Nintendo.

In response to the Hostess outlet post earlier, I do like those outlets too, but they are difficult to find. Out here in Raleigh (home of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes) there's a Sunbeam/Holsum outlet that has lots of good cookie and snack deals.

Loved the Alf Cake article. Also the finale of the Petster article. That was gold. Go cats! It's your birthday! There have been so many great ones, it's hard to pick a favorite. Oh, Nads! How could I forget Nads?

The blog has been great as well. Photog, of course! The "Matt's Adventures at Staples" blog was fabulous (221). It's harder to think of great blogs because they so often turn into something completely different from where they began. It's always fun to read what you guys have to say, though.

And on a completely unrelated note (except to the topic of driving, that is), I finally got my license. I've never mentioned it to you guys, but I've been slowly working towards this goal for three years. I figured I'd wait until I turned 21 to skip the whole vertical license thing, and I finally did it. I was so excited to tell someone, but none of my friends are in town right now. So yay, guys, know you know.

Also, congratulations, Matt! You're well!

i still like the article that pointed me to the site in the first place: the one about the star wars presto-magix.

is anyone else ready to fight hbo in the parking lot behind hardees after school for cancelling deadwood?

I have only been reading the site for about a year, but by far The Worst Witch article has got to be the best ever. I thought that I was the only one who remembered that movie. I used to wait for it to come on every Halloween. Tim Curry RULES!

Day late and half drunk. Long live the Saturday night.

Congratulations, Rainbowfeet. I myself was 19 when I got my license, 16 just seems criminally young.

I believe it was Milch who said he wouldn't do another season of Deadwood, not HBO. I get mad at HBO for pushing back Deadwood's season until June, or not releasing the Oz DVD until 8 months after they said they would, but I am HBO's bitch. I'll keep watching whatever they're showing.

Why thank you, Welsh Rabbit. I agree. 16 seems to be way too young for most people to drive.

Wow...favorite article ever? That is tough...'The Worst Witch' article made me laugh out loud a LOT, in public too...I also enjoyed all the trip articles, the Worst Game Room Ever, and the article where Matt spent the weekend with friends at an old cabin...

Best Blog - Photog Definitely
Best Article - Fireball Island

I actually peed a little when I read Fireball Island. I played the hell out of that game, and besides Legend of the Hidden Temple, I have never seen better use of a scary Jungle Idol. That's so Bitner has been used as a catchphrase by me EVER since. When I find a new catchphrase I don't get rid of the old one. You will hear me say anything from far-out to Cowabunga at a moments notice. Isn't that just totally gnarly...Word to your mutha
