SNT, plus, I have a 103 degree fever. Tell me some ways you make yourself feel better when yer sick. I got the "take medicine" part covered. Really, I'm just looking for some form of entertainment that won't make my eyes feel like someone is stabbing them with sharp stuff.

To be honest, my medicine usually consists of staying home smoking pot and cigs until I feel better.
Probably not the best medicine, but theres nothing like taking a paid sick day, and spending it high. There paying me to get high!!

I always make sure I shower. I aways feel less yucky on the inside when I am cean on the outside. And then I watch TV. And drink alot of juice and stuff. But mostly TV. That's the best part about being sick.
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 07/08/2006 08:08 PM EST
I'm not really into pot. The times I tried it usually just made me feel kind of sick to my stomach, and yet hungry at the same time. Just too weird.
Regarding entertainment, I watched the entire Robotech "Macross" series for the first time while I was sick. It's not seizure inducing like some other anime, and it had a kick-ass story. I don't know that it helped me feel better, but it did help pass the time.
Also, when I'm sick I like to relax in a luke-warm bath and read. I'll stick the MP3 player on the bathroom shelf and just veg to some good tunes and a good book. If you haven't read it, I HIGHLY reccomend the "Dark Tower" series by Stephen King, at least if you're into Old West/ Fanstasy/ Sci-Fi/ Romance/ Horror mashups. I swear, it's not like anything else I've ever read before or since.
P.S. I think this is the highest I've ever posted.

I used to have an old Abbott and Costello tape I would watch every time I got sick. As Reader's Digest says, Laughter is the best medicine. And yeah, the shower thing is good. And sometimes a nice big dump helps too.

Now that I think about it, Matt's never mentioned the kind of books he likes. For a guy who writes so much, you kind of figure he'd be a pretty voracious reader.
Well Matt? Am I right?

My usual sick cures, besides medicine, include the aforementioned showering, plus laying in bed with the laptop and a buttload of magazines. Daytime TV usually becomes involved at some point, too.
Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 07/08/2006 08:27 PM EST
When I'm sick I pretty much sleep and eat comfort food until I'm better. Oreos and Nyquil are your friend.
Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 07/08/2006 08:52 PM EST
Sorry about the sickness, Matt. Poor you. Getting sick in the summer sucks.
My cure? Disney movies, and lots of 'em. Move the TV to where you can see it from bed, snuggle in some blankets and watch Disney DVDs- I swear you will soon feel better. Avoid the tearjerkers like Dumbo, and stick to the funny ones like Aladdin.
I agree with Jesse, pot smoking doesn't hurt either.
Shhhh, don't tell my students that.
Also, pajamas are fun. Getting sick is an excuse to not get dressed all day.

Whenever I feel sick and/or hungover, I pop in one of my many MST3K VHS cassettes, curl up on the sofa with a Gatorade, and let the good times roll.
Speaking of good times, today I was fortunate enough to tour a local "hands-on" science museum that was showcasing an exhibit of actual props and costumes from all six Star Wars movies. It was nothing short of spectacular, and the exhibit might be coming to a city near you! Click my handle below for more info.
Feel better, duder.

I second the Dark Tower series. I'm 300 pages away from finishing book 7 (the final one), and it's been one helluva trip so far. It has elements from a LOT of his other books, too, which adds a lot of neat touches to the story. Plus there's a little.. animal.. in the story that you'll probably fall in love with, like I did.

You poor thing. I remember when I got pnemonia as a 12-year-old. Like Muppet Baby, I watched lots of Disney movies, along with the aforementioned shower, daytime TV, a good, long book, and orange juice and herbal tea. I drank so much herbal tea when I got sick, I learned to love it. Apple cider, too. (I got sick in the fall.) "The Rescuers," which I saw for the first time when I was sick, became my favorite Disney movie, and I still try to catch it when I'm feeling particuarly yucky.
But most of all, Matt...sleep. Lots of sleep. Sleep the day away; I suspect you don't often get to do that, with your job. I got a nasty fever in early April. I called out of work around 8:30 and went back to bed...and didn't wake up until 3. I felt much better than I had when I went to sleep.

This may not be your cup of tea, but Anne Rice wrote three books once upon a time under the name of A. N. Roquelaure (I think I spelled that right...). It's a series of basically porn (erotica just doesn't cover it) based on the story of Sleeping Beauty. I have one of them on tape, and listening to it is about the funniest thing ever. Just a thought on the whole entertainment thing.
Chestnuts roasted by Mara @ 07/08/2006 10:13 PM EST
Absolutely sleep. I've never had a problem "making" myself sleep, so when I get sick I'll sleep 10 hours a night with an afternoon nap thrown in there. I seem to get better faster than most other people I know. Drink lots of juice and put a cold washcloth on your forehead.
I think Matt's said that he's not much of a reader... I love to read, but when I'm feverish I can't concentrate and I'm better off watching TV. Like The Yeti, I make myself a marathon of MST3K episodes, you don't have to change the tape/DVD very often. Plus I've seen them all so much I can fall asleep for a while and still know what's going on when I wake up.

Oh, and if anyone out there hasn't heard of this, go buy some: Airborne. It comes in tablets like alka-seltzer that you dissolve in water (tastes like weird orange soda), and it's herbal so you can't accidentally take too much. It's supposed to help ward off colds or shorten one you already have, and it really works.
Chestnuts roasted by Welsh Rabbit @ 07/08/2006 10:33 PM EST
When I take medicine I always end up more sick. But try those Pedialite Freezer Pops for Kids. They do something, really, and theyre the most sour things ever. And Movie Trilogy's work too.

It's called a shot of rum with black pepper. First add the black pepper, then add the rum, then down it. Yep. Shit'll clear yer sinuses real quick. Won't taste too good though. And then, just keep rollin with the booze and soon you'll forget all about your cold. Just don't drink so much that you have a hangover the next mornig cuz hangovers and colds aren't very good friends.
Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 07/08/2006 10:55 PM EST
I just take a TV or some other form of entertainment into the bathroom when I'm sick because I know I'll be spending a lot of time in there.
Chestnuts roasted by Somethin' Funny @ 07/08/2006 10:59 PM EST
Yes, yes, popscicles, of some kind, are always the main food when I have a cold. The only thing I will drink is Ginger ale or juice if it doesn't taste freaky, so popscicles are good for covering food and drink at the same time. Sorta.
When I'm sick, I usually end up playing video games, watch a movie, or do some writing. Sometimes I break out the stack of magazines that have been piling up (unread) and finally look through them. Reading manga is good too. I agree with the shower comment above. That always helps - but no I wouldn't take one while you are at 103 degrees.
Hope you feel better soon, Matt.

I like to put everything within arm's reach of the bed and watch telly for periods of 24 hours and up (I'm a big reader but when I'm sick usually I avoid it unless I go outdoors for fresh air or something). TV on DVD is especially good; I'd recommend Lost if it's new to you, but you can't exactly roll to the Best Buy when you're ill. MST3K is a fav too. I must second the recommendation of Airborne, with the addendum that you avoid the lemon lime flavor at all costs.
Feel better! Happy Saturday, everybody else!

Drinking water by the liter will flush your system and peeing is kind of entertaining. Also, games like GTA where you can just run around slaying crowds of digital people are good because you don't have to commit yourself to reaching goals aside from wanton destruction. If you have pets, insist that they use their healing powers on you.
Generally I end up having to go to work anyways though because the sicker I am, the less likely they are to believe I'm sick. That's fast food for ya. Prolly why you're sick too.

A good cure is to rest up all nice nice. Punch the pope while playing a mean hand of poker with Jesus then sell some guns to trigger-happy people with nervous tics.

The older I get, the more being sick sucks. I'm 27, and when I get a cold these days I feel like I'm on my death bed. Back in college, sick just ment I had to blow my nose between taking shots and whatever else I was on that night.
These days, sick = Videogames. Mostly emulators like MAME. I don't want to think, so I play old arcade, NES, and Genesis games.
Tonight, though, I was at a demolition derby. Here is a quick review of an event I wrote from a couple years ago, tonight was even better.

I'm afraid I'm not the one to be asking for fever remedies. When my temperature's up, I generally carry on as normal and ride the sensation. Nothing like those moments where the floor gently tilts ninety degrees and you become convinced that your death grip on the mouse is the only thing stopping you tumbling into the kitchen. Maybe that's just me.
I just got back from a showing of Pirates. I give it one enthusiastic thumb and one enthusiastic prosthetic hook hand up. To put in in the nerdiest terms possible: as sequels go, it was no Empire Strikes Back, but then it wasn't a Temple of Doom either. Good times all around.

Yes, TV is what I turn to when I'm sick; with my massive TV-on-DVD collection as well as over 300 DVD-Rs I've made of VCR recordings dating back to 1980. Unless watching moving images makes me sicker; then I'm kind of stuck.

Watch: Monty Python, old school cartoons, Tommy Boy (best. sick movie. ever.)
Consume: Fruit popsicles (the chocolate/creamsicle ones make your throat feel icky) sprite (Good for clearing your throat, and no caffiene. Sugar buzz and sickness don't mix well)
Sleep: Big squishy cuddle pillows, and a nest made out of every single blanket in the house. Being sick is the best excuse in the world to build yourself a couch cushion/blanket fort in front of the TV.

Haven't tried the pink grapefruit Airborne...It can't possibly be as awful as the lemon lime, but if you really want to be safe the orange is the way to go. If you do try it, drop the word, because I wouldn't mind a respite from the Tang flavor either.
I forgot to add my other sickness remedies: whining incessantly and demanding that I be waited on hand and foot. Seriously, whining like a spoiled child.
Was talking to a coworker who had never seen any Indy movies. For some reason, I blurted out that if they only watched one, it should be Temple of Doom. The other people in the convo took issue with that, and I had to admit that it's the worst one and I didn't know why I recommended it. Selective childhood memories, I guess.
I'm watching the premiere ep of Hex from BBC America. It's alright so far, but I don't want to invest too much time into it if it goes south. Anyone have an opinion? I read one review that said it was a darker, smarter, sexier Buffy, but I was never a Buffy fan.

Fire, and plenty of it!
May I once again promote my own method of enjoying a good sick day(s)? Two words:
Fever Floyd!
Yes, nothing trips you out while listening to "The Wall" like having a high fever in the dark. The only drugs needed are NyQuil (we love you, you great big f*cking Q!), aspirin, or your favorite Tussin flavor. I mentioned it once on FARK and someone said they watched the movie while very sick. They didn't have the strength to use the remote to turn it off. Imagine the dreams they must have had.

Chestnuts roasted by PRSense @ 07/09/2006 03:14 PM EST
It is very, very extremely important that you pay attention to the color of the 'Quil you are taking. NyQuil during the day is doable, so long as you didn't have anything that needing doing anyway. But taking DayQuil and then trying to go to sleep? Especially with a fever? Spiders in the skull, man. Not pleasant.

I went to see Dead mans chest last night, I enjoyed it very much so. I would have have a more enjoyable time if the little girl and boy sitting behind me would of shut the hell up and stopped asking their mom and dad "whats that?, whos that guy? why did he do that?" and if the people in front of me would have taken their children to the bathroom BEFORE the movie, instead of one kid at a time every 20 minutes.
None the less I had fun, my Bro in law and I did the whole pirate thing, but we went at the wrong time to dress as pirates but it worked to our advantage cause the workers saw us and and gave us free posters, and let us enter the contest without checking to see if we brought all the required things. After the movie they took our picture, they may use it for promo stuff. That would be fun, my face all over the theater.
My bro in law looked good, like I said before he had a real sword, he looked pretty realistic. Unlike me, we needed to bring an eye patch for the contest but I forgot mine, so I used a sticky note I found in the car and wrote eye patch on it.
Fun times! Ill see if I can get a pic of us to put on here lata!

I had a really bad stomach flu 2 months ago, and it was probably one of the worst ones I had. I had to take sleeping pills to go to sleep because I was in a lot of pain. If you can't keep anything down drink nutritional drinks, they have vanilla, strawberry and chocolate and have your daily dose of vitamins and calories (300 per can) I hated it that that is what I only had to drink but I made it through. The best thing about being sick though is at least 3 days afterwards you appreciate your health a lot more. I still feel that way, especially because I have a new job!! It's 9 dollars an hour plus full medical, retirement (I am not planning to retire there, just sayin) and I really appreciate it 'whew' I do because I was so broke before. And I have been window shopping online for lots of stuff I have been needing/wanting.

Seriously do not mess with grapefruit if you are taking medication. There are ALOT of medications that do not gel well with grapefruit for whatever reason and can be life threatening even if mixed.
The best thing to do for a high fever is to take cool showers, keep ice on your forehead/back of your neck/wrists and other pulse points and drink LOTS of fluid. Water is best, clear juice is second best and ginger ale/sprite/sierra mist comes in third. Watch out for the juice though, too much sugar can be bad. Take tylenol regularly but if you are taking Nyquil check the ingredients to make sure that it doesn't already contain a small dosage (most cold medicines already have the equivelant of one tylenol in it) so you can adjust your dose accordingly.
I'm a veteran of these things after being hospitalized for pneumonia a few times.

This whole Chocodile thing got me thinking about that article Matt did about the Hostess outlet store. Anyway, I live in the San Fernando Valley, and for the longest time, there was a Hostess store near my house. It was kind of run-down, and it was weird because I would find stuff that I never saw in the grocery store (i.e. Hostess brand cereal). Also, it was attached to a fairly large warehouse filled with Hostess trucks, but I never saw anyone working there other than the cashier. The store has since gone out of business, but every time I pass by the building, I always think about the times I went inside and the vague feeling of depression I would have while inside. As a side note, it was down the street from an Anheuser-Busch brewery that used to be a Busch Gardens.

As far as sodas are concerned..."All natural" is a total cop-out, and it makes things no healthier or better than their peers. I think it's the book "Fast Food Nation" that talks about how "Natural flavors" are sometimes more dangerous than "Artificial flavors."
If you're looking for healthy, natural foods, "Organic" is a better key word.

Got a pirate skull/magic 8 ball toy from McD's last night that gives advice with a piratey flair. I'm sure I'm going to be there all week trying to get the rest of these toys.
I didn't notice the comparisons between Empire and Pirates 2 before, but I've thought about it and I can see it...(mild spoilers)...the heroine's affections divided, the rouge working further toward redemption, the cliffhanger ending. Next May is not going to come fast enough!

When you're juuust well enough to be ambulatory, go breathe on the people you dislike. Sneeze on their doorknobs, cough on their pencils. Spread the Love, man.
phunq, look up "Melting Grimace" on Google. A lot of the refs are mine. I refuse to believe I alone was the only trauma'd child victim of that ad.

Matt, I really hope you're taking a sick day today. 103 on Saturday = no worky Monday. It's hard enough doing the 5 day week after a truncated holiday week without being deathly ill on top of it.
Not into Spidey, so I didn't know he was showing up next May...That will be a great box office battle. I can't wait!

All those people that recommended that Airborne stuff: try EmergenC. It's a powder that you pour into a glass of water. There are tons of flavors, not just this citrusy stuff, though the most vitamin c rich ones are citrus flavors.
Whatever you do, don't get the coffee flavored ones. Strawberry is good, it's a more rounded multivitamin also. I like cranberry and super orange best, my mom like tangerine. Some people swear by the unflavored, but I dislike the slight mediciney aftertaste. Still, it's great stuff, I drink it even when I'm not sick, but when I am, I just mix up a huge amount and alternate between it and water. Flushing your system always helps with a cold.
Also, if you have a sore throat, get a spoonful of honey and sprinkle a thick layer of pepper on top. Swallow it straight down, don't keep it in your mouth, or you'll gag. Helps immensely. I hadn't heard of the suggestion to do this with rum before, but sounds plausible enough.

I do Tylenol Cold and Flu (night time version) and lots of caffeine for during the day. Added bonus it makes you feel like a zombie, letting you know how the living impaired feel.
At night an extra spoonful of nighttime NyQuil above the recommended dosage. Puts me out and lets me sleep, which is probably what you need most of.
Than again, when feeling sick I've always found it made me feel better by just spreading the wealth, and let others share your misery.

Kingklash - Don't worry, if I could remember what you were talking about I'm sure it would stir up some horrible memories. I was traumatized by the count on sesame street because he was scary and just had child molestor written all over him. To make matters worse my older brothers used to hide in various places and jump out wearing this Count halloween costume we had. Needless to say my parents promptly disposed of the costume years ago. The count ain't shit nowadays but for some reason he had me on my toes for a good portion of my younger childhood...

Don't take Tylenol Cold if you can help it. I had a pretty high fever a few months ago, and took that. I jumped in the shower and almost passed out. I had to get out soaking wet and threw on my boxers only to pretty much pass out in the living room. It sucked.
The Doctor said Tylenol Cold and a fever don't mix well, with the codine in it and all. I would have never thought Tylenol would be bad, but from experience, be careful.

when im sick i try and bitch and moan as much as possable, if u make people think your worse off then you are it will make u feel better. Also, try and steel something from someone else. It just makes their day shitty, and thus they feel like you, and thus feeling shitty becomes the norm. And once its the norm, then you start to get better, but their shit is still stolen, so now your all good but they feel like ass, so it makes you feel even better.
Im a fucking clepto....actually im pretty sure i stole this computer

Beatbox for as long as possible before your breath runs out. Repeat while watching MST3K. Then do pushups. You will feel better within a matter of minutes.

When I was a kid I had a 104 fever and fell asleep watching Darkwing Duck. The dreams were awful, luckily that show is no longer on or it would give me crazy psycodelic flasbacks.
If you are sick with a cold drink a bloody mary with a little beer in it. That does it for me. Also watch Mr. Show dvds.

Mystie- I caught some of that Sunday afternoon. It only took a few minutes for me to start shouting: "It's Point Break. Point Break. POINT BREAK YOU FUCKER!"
MST3K is shorthand for Mystery Science Theater 3000. It was an excellent show that ran for over a decade. Buy the DVDs.

I hope I'm un-banned now (Why does Greymatter keep doing this??)
After reading all these sick comments, I seem to have succombed to a head cold myself.
And the caffeine remedy? Doesn't work. Maybe I'm a caffeine junkie, but it ain't helping.
And not only did I catch Pee-Wee & The World Series of Pop Culture (and add me to the list who screamed at the tv several times, especially at the Point Break q), I also caught I Love the 70s vol 2. They have officially run out of things to talk about.

Greymatter was on my shit list for a while, but they haven't banned/prohibited me from posting lately, so I dunno why they target some of us and not the others.
I saw part of the World Series of Pop Culture (name is way too damn long) but I only saw up until the Lazer Wolves lost. I was hoping they'd win. I was sucked into the marathon of Hogan Knows Best, earlier, and saw part of the 70's thing. Most TV I've watched in a long time. I don't know why I'm telling you all this. I forgot my original point, if I had one.
I'll go to bed now...

Is it just me or did that episode of pee-wee's playhouse seem like it was the first episode or somehting? It seemed like they were rushing around trying to introduce all of the characters and not doing too mnay funny things...judging by the size of his foil ball it might not have been but i can't remember how big it was in the begining...can anyone answer this?

It's been 3 days since Matt said he was sick. I'll bet he's all better and writing a new article for us about cold medicine or something. Can't wait.
I had bronchitis one time. I smoked cigs too. I thought my lungs were gonna collapse. Felt like I was gonna cough up blood. Haven't smoked since. Wanna quit? Try that. Although, I can still tolerate bong hits no matter how sick I am... go figure.
Got a good Matt article jones goin'. Woe...

No, Matt's a smoker. I bet he's about 50% and will still feel like crap for another week or two. He's probably lazing about in front of his TV in a t-shirt, sweat pants, and cozy socks. Probably just like this...

They should have emphasized that in all the anti-smoking PSAs. Emphysema and lung cancer are pretty abstract ideas for a kid to wrap their head around, but explain that every little irritating sniffle and cough will linger for weeks and it might make a difference.

What I don't get, is did they tell the "Personalities" on the I Love.... set, "We know you young guys don't know crap about the 70's, so we won't mind if you talk out of your collective ass and insult everything." Did they think we'd find it amusing in a "hip, edgy, ironic" fashion?
At least Pee-Wee was on. I even hummed along to the closing theme.

This has nothing to do with anything being discussed at the moment (that I know of, I looked at the last 5 posts and quit looking), but waiting in line to see Superman 2 weeks ago I got bored so my friends and I went to the candy store across the street.
It was a great store (I forget the name but it's down the street from the Paramount Theatre in Toronto), old board games and toys lined the walls, there was a Pac-Man curtain shielding customers from the horrors of the backroom, and Wacky Action Michelangelo greeted you at the cash desk.
But the object that made me think of X-E was a 12" Boo Berry bank, harking back to the firstish article about cereal.
I want to work there, screw cubicles.

My only recent Vh1 watching has been My Fair Brady (which has been aggravatingly short of blurred T & A lately, am I right?). I want to check out the WSoPC but it sounds like it might be a bit annoying...I do enjoy screaming answers at the television, but there's always Cash Cab for that.
I forgot to add that you can find lots of MST3K on YouTube (but of course one should also buy the official release DVDs as well). I hear you can get Final Sacrifice on there, which I highly recommend for first-timers.
