07/04/2006 Entry: "X-E's Disney World Adventure - Part 3!"

Happy 4th of July, all. I've barely heard any fireworks today. Guess everyone blew their stock over the course of the weekend. Krauts. I'm down to a smoke bomb and a sparkler, and I just totally remembered right now that this is one of those rare days of the year where several channels run marathons of shows that are only good in marathon form. I'll make this quick.

A month, nine pages and 56,000 words bring X-E's Disney World Adventure to its conclusion. Part 3 has been posted, covering luaus, blinking drinks, roller coasters and giant bees. Hope you've enjoyed the series; I'm definitely ready to get back to doing some more "normal" X-E articles, starting next weekend.

I'm first! Yippeeeeeee! Anyway, thanks for the Disney articles Matt. They are a pleasure to read since I haven't been down in about 20 years. By the way, Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi interrupted by ECW at 10 tonight! God I love holidays.

To echo the sentiments, I love the disney articles as well. Something about living vicariously through other people's vacations makes me excited.

PLus, I've never been to Disney World, and to get a perspective on it other than the usual "brochure" "everything's so exciting!" view is refreshing.

STAR TOURS!

Aw yeah... final Diznee!!!

Um, how about more on those shows that are only good in marathon form? I watched the Cosbys in the middle of the night for a couple episodes recently... and it was damn funny. Not just cuz of Bills sweaters neither!

That blue glowing drink reminds me of a Pangalactic Gargleblaster. Most recipes that I know of allow it to glow blue in black light. They also look neat if a light is shined up through it. Hell, I'm sure they would look neat with that glowing cube. However, a Gargleblaster is most definitely alcoholic, so consider yourelf warned.

I've never been to Disneyworld, but it looks like fun. I really wish I'd done their Summer work program while I was still a college student. Sigh.

Happy 4th, y'all! I'm so happy Part 3 is finally posted, as I now have an excuse NOT to finish getting all the paint off of the floor.

Sorry to divert your attention from so called 'normal' XE articles for awhile, but I know these Disney articles were definately appreciated by myself- an insider look at DIsney from someone who thinks the same things are cool as I do...well, you can't beat that! It has been my own vicarious vacation. I am so excited to see Part 3 is up and ready to read- and now I have high speed internet so I can actually watch your video clips too! Whoot!

Thanks, Matt.

Heh ... Thanks for taking us to DisneyWorld Matt. My favorite "Hot Disney thing" of all is definitely #20: "Epcot is fucked up." The Mexican ride is totally the gem of the park! That's exactly the kind of shit i crave.

Nice Job.

Yay! I can't wait until I have time to read it.

Although I'm sorry to say that you lost the race I had going in my head: Part 3 of Disney or Homestar Runner finally updating. And they slept through June!

Oh well. It was a race well run, with glorious awesomeness at the finish line for both parties. Hooray!

I haven't read part 3 yet, but I just wanted to say that I've been suffering from a terrible ear infection for the last three days, and SciFi's Twilight Zone marathon has been my own personal saviour. I've laughed, I've cried, I've cried harder because the act of laughing made my ear hurt. Thank you, SciFi...

Matt --

Thanks for taking the time out to post such an elabortate series of articles on your Disney trip; they were rad, and a real pleasure to read.

Now my 4th of July is complete. Nice job, Matt, and Happy Independance Day! I DID have to work today, but not nearly as long (or as late) as I did last year, and I had a great view of some gorgeous fireworks on the bridge between Collingswood and Oaklyn.

Only the Sci-Fi restaraunt, Polynesian luau, and Main Street existed when I last went to Disney World in 1990. I've always liked Main Street. I'm a habitual window shopper, and it sort of reminds me of Cape May in the summer (except for the castle at the end). I recognize the theater that's somehow supporting the big-ass Micky hat, too - that's where the Dick Tracy show was in 1990, though the hat wasn't there at that point.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 07/04/2006 11:00 PM EST

i cannot tell you how extremely happy these articles made me. i just got back from disney world, so seeing how extremely dorky someone else could be about the subject made me feel a little better about how extremely obsessed about the trip i became right before leaving.

oh, and that luau dessert is definitely a letdown.

This was the best Disney article yet. Since I've never been and possibly never will be there, thanks. It's like a little vacation.

I love how the fire dude is just a little bit fat. Warms my heart.

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 07/04/2006 11:21 PM EST

What a way to wrap up the Fourth, eh?

All three of the articles were great reads, Matt, and easily just as good as the site's "normal" articles (assuming writing about Hi-C or Halloween decorations meets your definition of normal, which it sure does mine).

One of these days, I'm going to get back to the Disney parks and do them right...and these lists aren't a bad place to start. If nothing else, I need to try Everest, which wasn't open when I was there.

When I was at Disneyworld with the family in June of 1997, Main Street USA was holding "elections". Winnie the Pooh was running for mayor against Captain Hook, with both of them shaking hands , kissing babies, and making pantomime speeches from soapboxes. You could cast your vote and get a button and a paper hat to wear to support your candidate. How cute is that? I supported Captain Hook, because he was actually sticking "Vote for Hook" stickers to peoples' asses.

Hooray, I'm not the only American webmaster who would actually update a site on the 4th instead of go outside! I'm not alone anymore....

The biggest revelation of the whole three-parter was in this one, at least in my opinion....

....and that is....A PIZZA PLANET ACTUALLY EXISTS???

That's the best reason to go that I've heard yet. They don't have to JUST be in the park, you know....Disney would make a killing by building real Pizza Planets across the US. I may be way too old, but I want to go to one badly....snag some three-eyed aliens with the mystical Claw....and play a Whack-the-Aliens-Bursting-Out-Of-A-Man's-Bloody-Chest game(check the movie again, it's in there)....

Loved the little brat in the drive-in story; and it had great advice. The only problem is I'm just as afraid to swear as she is. So it really wouldn't work for me.

Matt-There are few rare finds that truly catch my eye and make me laugh hysterically on the internet but your website is truly one of them. I have laughed so hard while I've been on break at work that people in other cubicles keep getting up to see what I'm laughing at. I stumbled on to this rare gem while googling for instructions to the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego board game that I seemed to have lost long ago and came upon your article written in 04 about Shitty Baord Games and thought I would die of laughter. You certainly have a way of putting things and I have truly enjoyed reading your blogs and other posted articles. This website is certainly going on my favorites list-

Matt, the light parade on Main Street used to be known as The Main Street Electrical Parade. They ended it in 1996. My dad bought a souviner real live lightbulb used in the parade after they dissassembled the floats, it was green. Great job on the 3 parter!

I loved the articles. I doubt I'll ever get to go to Disneyworld, as I live in the UK, but it certainly give me a taste for the insanity.

With each successive Disney article, I found myself longing for next year's trip to the holy DW land. My family is going with threebeesatdisney's family next spring/summer, if that is indeed you, B. If it's not you B., nevermind. I don't want someone to think that I'm stalking his/her family or that I'm like Bob from "What About Bob".
We actually have some of those lighted ice cubes and they look really cool in the glowing Lord of the Rings light-up chalices that I mentioned in an earlier thread.

By the way, Superman Crunch does indeed turn my poop green. It wasn't just coincidence.

Good show, Matt! I'm just about 90 minutes down the road from DisneyLAND on the Left Coast, but I think the World is now one place I'd certainly like to see before I die. It seems like the park I've grown up with on steroids, to the zillionth power. But I think I'd rather go during the winter; things are broiling enough in CA right now.

Have you ever seen Anthony Bourdain's show "No Reservations" on the Travel Channel? I think if he ever went to WDW (which wouldn't be bloody likely, considering his tastes; I think he once dissed it on one episode), he would probably make very similar comments to your writing. You have quite a gift, man. Does it cost extra wrapped?

I had one (well more than one...it was my birthday at the time! wink) of those light up drinks at Disney's MGM Studios at the 50's Prime Time Cafe. We raided "Dad's Liquor Cabinet"!

From Dad's Liquor Cabinet

Our Family's Glowing Drinks
served with Dad's "Experimental Electric Ice Cubes"
$9.50

Dad's Electric Lemonade - Dad whips up an electrifying blue drink with rum, vodka, blue curacao, sweet and sour mix and Sprite -- it is to die for!

Uncle Tim's Summer Breeze - Our favorite uncle had a delicious idea for this drink and mmmm was he so right. Mix of Bombay gin, cherry brandy, sweet and sour mix and sprite... It is so refreshing!

Mowie Wowie -- Malibu rum, melon liqueur, peach schnapps, orange and pineapple juices.

Grandma's Picnic Punch -- Grandma concocted a wonderful drink for the family picnic with vodka, peach schnapps, creme de cassis, pink lemonade and pineapple juice.

That Grandma... ya gotta watch her! She'll drink it all up before ya realize it!

I loved those drinks so much I bought a bunch of the "ice" cubes off of eBay. That was a few years back. I think Matt's looked way cooler in the dark since mine was served under fluorescent lights. Bummer!

Hmm, live alligators at Orlando Airport? Wonder what they feed them? (insert corny joke about bad airport/airline food here) Anyways, another airport I might recommend getting stuck in is San Jose, CA. It has this Rube Goldberg-type machine in a glass case in one of the terminals that moves these marbles upward with a battery-operated chain pulley (the only thing in there not operated solely by gravity), then drops them through a wild mechanical maze where they can take something like three paths through various springs, chutes, and funnels before reaching the bottom and starting their perilous journey all over again. Yeah, I think there are a million similar devices throughout the known world, but mostly in museum lobbies. This one was in a mother-loving AIRPORT. And even so, you can still watch them practically forever. It certainly livened up my stay there, since we had to wait a long time and on top of that our flight was delayed. Fortunately this was just a Southwest Airlines puddle-jumper, so we weren't TOO tired and pissed afterwards.

Don't know if it could beat alligators, though. Of course, alligators are often content to not do a whole hell of a lot, so it would be a tough call for me.

Long-time lurker, first-time postersmile The comment about restaurant reservations cracked me up and I had to share a similar situation I encountered at WDW a few years ago. I succumbed to the reservation paranoia they spread there, so I called the reservation hotline from our hotel one morning trying to make a reservation at the Teppanyaki restaurant in the Japan pavilion at Epcot. The lady on the phone spoke to me in a tone that insinuated I was a total idiot. She said, “Ma’am, you need to book reservations for Teppanyaki six months in advance.” So I asked if she had anything available for that night and she conceded that actually, yes she did. And I got my choice of available times. While we were there, I witnessed numerous walk-in customers get seated quite promptly as well (actually, more promptly than us reservation holders!). I think they try to create a false sense of demand to justify the “exclusivity” of some of the restaurants.

I don't think this has been mentioned here, but I just found out that Brandon Routh is apparently a major fruitcake. When he was fired from One Life to Live, he said on his website that the producers may get far in this world, but this isn't the world that really matters, also- "I will leave God to judge those who have wronged me."

If only I'd had the benefit of your wisdom when I took Eirene to Jupiter Jackup V at the Coliseum. This son of an ox blower kept leaning back and trying to steal her olives, so she just gave the whole bag to him like a stupid slave. A whole dupondius pissed right down the gutter. I should have just got a fucking T-shirt. Then the ingrate turned round and started spitin' the pits at her titties, real cute aye? So I wedged my gladius in the little jizzers forehead. Of course that set the mum off so I had to bleed that pecker sheath, then it got ugly....I'd take a shit wagon to Tartarus before duplicating that event, but fuck all that my eyes hurt just thinking about it.

So, thank you, Matt. With this trifecta of Disney articles, I think I speak on behalf of all your readers saying that this was one of your finest achievements EVAR, if not the best. Wonderful stuff.
But the questions arise:
Where's the picture of the devil child in the drive-in diner? We could circulate her face all over the internet to ensure that this girl realizes that she is Satan-spawn. You know, like the Star Wars Kid fiasco.
"it's important to not be stupid," says Matt. Can I steal that quotation from you? I love it too damn much to part ways.
I love the napping comment. When we went to DisneyLAND, my dad decided to nap on a stone wall below the Gadget Go-Coaster in Toon Town. So over the intercom you hear this girl saying, "no climbing the walls." My dad's too tired to pay attention. She says "no SLEEPING on the walls." I was laughing too hard to be embarrassed for being his son.
Um, what the hell is "Philhar" mean? It's going to drive me nuts.
I liked that you got a shot of the Disney pins. They're really super cool, to me at least, and drive me to the unthinkable that I may have to be one of those geeks who collect pins like Burt does bottle caps. I bought 7. I do so love my Haunted Mansion pin, where the gates open up to reveal the hitchiking ghosts. I play with it on my tie at work all the time.
So thanks again Matt, a great time was had by all, and by all we mean us who didn't join you.

"philharmonic" means "devoted to music" or "having to do with music"

Thus, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

I had to blink a couple of times when I read "Eirene" up there. I've been reading Rome recaps lately to kill time and thought I was on the wrong site for a second. Trying to figure out when season 2 is coming, I see the official answer is "set for 2007", and the unsubstantiated unverified answer seems to be January
(hopefully along with Sopranos???). Still can't find any info about when Extras season 2 airs, but I know filming has started so that's encouraging.
After 5 carries everything cool and booze related, so I checked and sure enough they have the light-up cubes. They appear to be the exact same brand, though of course it's not the same without the mouse-shaped swizzle stick.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/05/2006 11:37 PM EST

Holy crap, those cubes are five bucks apiece? My Dad's a research chemist working on the next level of LED lighting, he's always saying LED products cost too much and run out too fast. I guess I agree with him.

All my lighting effects come from the dollar store in the form of glow tubes. Five bracelets for a dollar? Take that, The Man!

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

For Disney fans curious as to why certain things were left out, here's a few bits:

1) Pirates of the Caribbean was closed for renovations to reflect the new movie. The gift shop remained open and almost made the list. I really did buy a rubber skull there.

2) Didn't go on Mission:Space. It was the only ride the woman wasn't having. Kind of had alcohol-skewed tunnel vision whenever in Epcot anyway, so I didn't mind so much.

3) We did go on Soarin', but I honestly wasn't impressed.

4) We didn't hit Pop Century; if we had, I'd be writing about Disney for another six months.

5) We skipped Spaceship Earth, for no real reason. It just worked out that way.

6) Epcot's Illuminations show was mentioned, but it really should've been a Hot Disney Thing. Closest you'll get to a tear in Disney without watching an old lady break her hip in Toontown.

Those are the main things. Trust what I said in Part 1 and do not stay at the Grand Floridian -- it's just boring and the individual hotel room buildings feel like they're out of The Shining. The Polynesian could've sufficed as a good vacation even without the parks, but it's a little pricey if you're only half into that kind of stuff. When and if we ever go back, I want to stay at the Wilderness Lodge. That plays looks awesome.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/06/2006 01:04 AM EST

Matt, we stayed at Wilderness Lodge the first time my family went to Disney, and it was pretty cool. Go for it, if you get the chance.

Alright, children. The way I see it, if there's any message board on this great big Internet where this message can gain plenty of attention, this is it. John Kricfalusi, best known as creator of The Ren & Stimpy Show, is trying to impress potential sponsors for a new show and the best way you can help prove that there would be an audience for that sort of thing is to comment on his latest blog. You don't even need to write anything particularly insightful; just prove that there could be an audience for a new cartoon. Tell your friends to get onboard. This show needs as many supporters as possible, and it needs 'em fast.

I feel like a PBS telethon.

You know, this may be the best advertising Disney could ever get. I was debating about doing a Disney trip on the cheap this fall for just a couple days... but after reading this, I think I now wait a year, save up some more cash, and just go nuts. I need to check out that damn Magical Disney bus that takes you from the airport to the hotel. I was sold when you mentioned that UNCLE SCROOGE was on the video they play.

Anyway, keep up the great work on X-E. I am hooked on this website for life.

Chestnuts roasted by Jon @ 07/07/2006 01:46 AM EST

Heh heh...You are absolutely right, Welsh Rabbit. Very well informed. Nice work.

JohnK, is, without a doubt, a jerk, but I love him just the same. He missed deadlines, caused all sorts of trouble, and, quite honestly, deserved to get fired, but Ren & Stimpy was a phenomenal show and there are not many people who know as much about what makes a great cartoon as he.

John's a huge jerk, but we're talkin' show biz! It's a whole industy made of crooks and vermin! If you decide not to support the work of jerks, you may as well sever all ties to media. Billy West is a total jerk, but he's also one of the most talented voice-actors ever. I can take this further - look at high culture. I can't think of any specific examples of crazy/angry artists, but you know they've existed. (I spent, like, ten minutes looking around Wikipedia for one, but I got distracted by all the pretty pictures and links and unsubstatiated claims. Wikipedia has some neat stuff. Regardless, I wasn't going to spend more than ten minutes doing research for a message board post. I've spent more than enough time writing this as it is.)

If you're going to choose not to support the work of jerks, I'll back you. I think that's a way-cool goal. Don't botcott one jerk based on the word of another, though. I guess that means don't listen to me, 'cause I'm as jerky as the rest of 'em.

Bottom-line: If you care click the the link and look at his ideas.

Jerk or genius I haven't decided yet, but I have been enjoying John K.'s blog, especially the celebrity caricatures.
That's really horrible, JoshC! Sorry to hear about it. sad
Just got back from Dead Man's Chest. I agree that it easily lives up to the hype; possibly even better than the first one. Saw it at the El Capitan, so they had all the cool costumes and props (the jars of dirt AND eyeballs! olde timey guns! assorted melons!) and there were a couple of news crews and way more people dressed as pirates than I anticipated. I don't want to spoil too much, since I know not everybody took the damn day off to go see it, but it is a perfect follow-up to what they did with the first one. The CGI on Davy Jones and crew is amazing, and way more impressive onscreen than the commercials led me to expect. It has a lot of slapstick (but so did the first) but the script is clever too (and doesn't drag anywhere, perhaps unlike the first one). I'm already ready to see it again...Just heard on the news that the Capitan is sold out through Sunday already.
Topic? In line I encountered a couple of dudes sporting Disney pins, so I asked them how the POTC ride revamp was and got the impression that overall it's pretty good. Actually, my suspicion is that the revamp is super good, and these dudes were just putting on too-cool-for-school airs.

Remember how at the end of (maybe the Flintstones) there would be this bring in the milk, put out the cat, then the cat would jump back in through a window? Wasn't there some 80's show that did that too? Was it Dinosaurs? Am I going crazy? Is that Bubbletape? Can I have some?

To everyone else: Have you noticed the Jerry Bruckhiemer logo on all the Pirates of the Carribean advertisements? If you missed it, that's alright, because they flash his name all around the screen and read it for you. Anyway, that's the advertisers' way of telling you that a movie or show will be a horrid, mind-numbing travesty. Seriously, I can't believe I sat through the first one. Will someone please tell me how ANYONE could screw up a movie that features both pirates and the living dead? It's incomprehensible.

All my ranting has left me with an extra thought: If the Haunted Mansion movie from just a few years back had been as successful as the Pirates franchise, would Disney have desecrated their ride with Eddie Murphy updates?

I am a total playa hata when it comes to the Bruckmeister; I wouldn't sit through the likes of Top Gun or CSI without the promise of financial renumeration. Pirates is one of the exceptions to the Bruckheimer banality. You can pick it apart and hate on it, but I think you'll find most people are willing to embrace the silliness and fun.
I thought they were giving away the milk with how much they show Davy Jones in the promos (I saw him on a puzzle/poster many weeks ago), but once I saw what they had up their sleeves with the crew/Kracken it made sense.

Man, I have been hearing nothing but BAD reviews for Pirates 2...even my crappy local paper trashed it this morning as I was drinking my coffee, and since it's the ONLY movie playing in town, that really bummed me out. Still, I cannot believe they could screw it up so badly....pirates, Johnny Depp, cool CGI, HOW can this be bad? Although, the review DID say that it was insanely long...

Was Jerry Bruckhiemer responsible for "Armageddon"? If so, the man is evil. That movie was a piece of shit.

Except maybe explosions and car chases, but it does have explosions and pirate ship chases, so there. Also, the movie is worth seeing for the coolest bad guys I have seen in a movie in a long long time.

In closing, it made me feel like a little kid again. And (SPOILER, MAYBE)............................................................................. yes, I'll say it, reminded me a little of the Empire Strikes Back, at the end anyway.

Cameron T.: No, it wasn't. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that your opinion is wrong. That's right, people who disagree with me! You can end all this pointless arguing now, because I am the only one with a valid opinion and the rest of you are wrong.

Muppet Baby: Bruckhiemer was the producer on Armageddon. I won't speak out against this movie too much, because I haven't seen it. Still, I can't think of any reason to see it, because it was not only produced by Jer-Jer B, but directed by Michael Bay. They've worked together quite a few times, judging by the generally reliable IMDB, but never managed to make anything good, which is particularly upsetting because Jerry has co-production duty on an upcoming Prince of Persia movie. (Not that video game movies have the highest expectations anyway. It's too bad, because I thought the Super Mario Bros. movie was one of the most bizarre and entertaining pieces in cinematic history. Which, I'm sure destroys plenty of my credibility as a critic.) Even worse, Bay is directing the new Transformers. At the same time, Spielberg is executive producer. That will have some wild results.

Now for me to mock myself: I accidentally refered to Disney as they. Disney is a collective noun. Disney is it. I triedto point this out yesterday, but the X-E comment system said I'd posted something too recently and said I might be a spammer.

I've taken up more space on the board than I deserve. Sorry 'bout that. I'm done until the next topic. See you kids when Matt finishes the next article.

If you were able to stand the gut-wrenchingly annoying Stacy, then you really missed out by not getting to see the previous host, Crissa. She was MUCH more entertaining, much LESS punch-in-the-faceable, and much MORE attractive. Exhibit A.

Squee: That's why I didn't even watch the TV promos whenever they came on; I would just look away. I did once catch the part with Jack on the cannibals' spit.

The one thing I wish was that Keith Richards had been able to play Will's dad in this movie (really; look it up!) I hadn't done any pre-research on this movie before I saw it (except to find showtimes online), so yeah, I enjoyed it all without already knowing what to expect.

Movie records seem to be broken a lot more easily these days; Pirates 2 beat Revenge of the Sith to the most successful opening day release!

As a fellow Jersey Boy... I tell you that you must go the Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios.... The Spiderman ride at Islands blows the 3d stuff away on the Donald Duck ride....

How could you not write about the Haunted Mansion... or the lame Huckleberry Finn thingy???

Great stuff though!!!

We were just at the Disney Parks the week after you, it's scary how we made almost the very same observations you did. From the *mandatory* close captioned TV in the Lodge (which I finally outwitted by actually selecting cc) to the dining reservations in advance cramping our schedule.

Expedition Everest did rock, it was down the first day we tried to get on, but going in early on a Magic Hour day we managed several rides on it while the lines were short.

Reading your articles was like a travelogue written by me, only better!

I don't remember guards being posted by the disney characters back in the 80's. What's up with it now?!
