Got busy, so it's going to be a few more days before Disney Part 2. In a disastrous move, I'll try to tide you over with a new Kool-Aid review, knowing full well that this replacement is akin to that episode where the crowd was expecting a Chipmunks concert and booed the holy fuck out of the Chipettes. Today's featured flavor: Candy Apple.
So yes, even after all these years, the Shrunken Head Apple dude hasn't disintegrated and hasn't once been infested with gnats. He just keeps getting cooler and cooler with age, like a wine or a cheese or a something else. Yes. Okay, back to writing about Disney...see you.

Man, I need to make a shrunken head apple.
Come October, you should get everyone to make their own shrunken heads and send in pictures. Kinda like the Halloween art thing from last year, but with apples.

I know it's because of his appley skin pulling back with age... but, still.
It's ok, about the Disney pt 2 delay. It will make finally reading it that much sweeter.

Holy hell, I say we each write the Kool Aid people and demand that they start making this again! It sounds absolutely delicious for a 30 year old packet, could you imagine what a fresh packet would taste like? Mmm...
ps - I've never eaten a candy apple in my life! :X
pps - Matt, you are making me crave Halloween! :'(

I thought I could do some easy research, so I decided to go to wikipedia for a lead on the candy apple Kool-Aid (if ANYONE has an answer, or hint, it's them right?).
Practically every link in the "flavors" secton of their entry links to X-E!
I may have to actually crack one of those mythological things called "books" to find an answer on this one.

I actually remember seeing that Alvin & The Chipmunks episode. It was just as strange as the episode where they were Geishas and convinced Dave that they were girls.
And this reminds me of the horrific Caramel Apple Jones Soda from last Halloween.

Ryanne: Count me also as another person who's never had a candy apple either. I've had plenty of caramel apples though when I was younger. My great-grandma made them for halloween.
What's articuno?
Speaking of the Chipmunks, I remember when they did those old Saturday Morning Preview specials. One particular year they had people in Chipmunk costumes be teachers at a school. Among the faculty was Bull from Night Court as a gym teacher, Jackee Harry as a secretary, and the Punky Brewster kids as students.

Why was Candy Apple Kool-Aid so shortlived? Most likely because it wasn't different enough to warrant continued shelfspace devoted to it. It's basically just a Cherry and Apple mix with cinammon added, and supermarket distributors were uppity like that.

Ewwww. He looks nasty nasty. Like if you dressed up a pile o' poo with a wig.
Having started a diet, I've cut out soda intake, including diet ones, which I suspect as having equally foul affects upon our anatomies. And thus, have rediscovered Kool Aid and similar drinks, making them with Splenda instead of sugar or some weird chemical substitute. Even more, I find myself drinking lemonade most of all, putting away a pitcher a day. Easy to make- one cup lemon juice, one cup Splenda, about 3 - 3 1/2 cups H20. Sometimes I add lime juice in there, as well. Yum!

Wow, Candy Apple Kool-Aid...that's amazing.
Had to laugh at the person who said they use Splenda instead of some "weird chemical substitute" for sugar. What do you think they did to the sugar to make it so your body doesn't absorb it? Surely nothing weird or chemical-ly.
Chestnuts roasted by Ariel @ 06/12/2006 11:32 AM EST
There's nothing weird or chemical-ly about Splenda. It's merely the hopeless tears of imprisoned pixies. Pixies, of course, being wholly sucrose-based organisms. Hence, pixie stix, the dried and ground remnants of specially fruit-fed pixies. That's why people don't applaud in movie theaters. Some might say that it's because moviegoers recognize that the characters on the screen are unable to register or appreciate the applause, but in actuality it's because all that clapping partially resurrects the pixie stix in the concession stand into a hellish, powdery half-life. And there's really no quicker way to ruin a date than to have a packet of pixie stix start squirming all over the place inchworm-style, pathetically begging for death in squeaky little cries. And man, don't even get me started on Sweet 'n Low. You've tasted the stuff, you can probably fill in the blanks on your own.
Trust me, you want to stick with sugar. The carbs and possible type two diabetes are a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Wow I mention Splenda and it gets all this hate. If anyone has a shred of proof that it's harmful, I'd like to be pointed in the direction of that information. Meanwhile, I'll leave you to your diabetes-inducing sugar and your cancer-causing nutrasweet ( and there is plenty of documentation to support this claim, unlike the slander on my poor, wonderous, futur-tastic Splenda ). Not to sound too harsh, but if it's good enough for my 85 year old diabetic grandmother, it's good enough for me! And now, back to my lemonade.
Chestnuts roasted by The Kraken @ 06/12/2006 03:56 PM EST
Actually, Kraken, several studies show that in a good percentage of people, their bodies treat Splenda the same as sugar -- except worse because it's a million times sweeter. Just as diabetes-causing as the real stuff for some of us.
And if the NutraSweet does't get me, the eight years of a pack-and-a-half a day or the asbestos will.

Well, the whole Splenda debate isn't really if it's sugar or not, because it's made from sugar, to begin with. It's what ELSE is in it and the fact that some people process it differently, so it could very well be absorbing into your body like sugar. Just do a web search and you will get all kinds of stuff about toxicity and chlorine and molecules and blah blah. My question is, why on earth would anyone want to eat a modified food that isn't given the holy green light of safety? I'm vegan, so I try to use raw sugar as much as possible, but I know I still eat regular sugar in prepackaged foods, but at least I'm glad it's not Splenda. If I was diabetic, I'd just try to stay away from sugar as much as possible. Oh and starch, because that is the main culprit alot of times.
Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 06/12/2006 08:03 PM EST
Ariel, I always think the same thing when someone says they wouldn't want that birth control that gives you fewer periods, because that's unnatural. Like a pill that makes your body think it's already pregnant is natural.
I'll stick to the Snapple teas, because last year's special edition "Snapple Pie" fruit drinks made me want to kill myself. And I tried both apple and berry, because I'm an idiot. Spices + milk + fruity water = crappy holidays.

Didn't people used to hang strings of apples in the rafters to dry for winter in Ye Olden Dayes? I feel like I remember it from the Little House books or the Brambly Hedge books. Either way, pioneers and/or anthropomorphic mice would want the apples to still be edible for those long winter months. Maybe they have to be treated with something, or be a certain high-acid variety?

You kmow that old report where you found the limon from the Sprite ads? They brought the limon back for a recent advertisement involving subliminal advertising. The ad says it's DVR-friendly, which is a recent trend in trying to get people with DVR boxes to watch ads (pause it and watch frame-by-frame or in slow motion to get everything). NBC showed some GE ads like that recently.

I googled "Splenda" and aside from the offical Splenda homepage, all the results were "Splenda = bad; for the love of god, do not put it in your body".
I didn't even say Splenda was bad, just that it was every bit as weird and chemical-y as any other artifical sweetener.
And for the record, I avoid any sugar as much as possible, except for that which naturally occurs in fruit...

Welsh Rabbit -- if it's any consolation, I was reading a book on the American Civil War and they were talking various supplies they had for the soldiers. Barrels of dried apples were included. Apparently, with a little water, sugar (or splenda, nutrasweet, whatever)and heat, they're quite tasty. Though I don't know if what drying method was used, and if it was similar to Matt's.

Chestnuts roasted by Mara @ 06/13/2006 01:53 PM EST
Lost also did a tie-in with the subLYMONal ads. I don't know why subliminal messages would be offensive to joke about; though I suppose you could probably make a pretty good case of it based solely on the infamous "Turnaround Dance" episode of Saved By The Bell. If that's not offensive I don't know what is.
Not to drift too far from the subject of apples, but king's comment about it spurred me to watch Shaun of the Dead and I enjoyed it immensely. It managed the funny/scary ratio better than anything I've seen in as long as I can remember, not to mention the awesomeness of seeing Peter from Look Around You all zombified.

Unrelated to apples, Kool-Aid, or Disney, I've been re-watching the new Battlestar Galactica on DVD. Really awesome stuff. If you haven't been watching it because the cheese factor on the original series was so high, you're doing yourself a disservice. This is sci-fi TV at it's finest. On the other hand, a review of one of the original episodes by Matt would surely be hilarious, although it's pop culture before his time.
Also unrelated to the current topic, I hate lawyers. If I took a car in for service and it didn't get fixed, I would expect the shop to either reimburse me or try again for free. However, if my lawyer doesn't get me out of my traffic ticket for my recent incident of sleep-driving, I'm still out what I pay him plus the fines and possible !jail time! that I could be stuck with. Pretty shady if you ask me.
That is all.

Your fall (it's "autumn", dammit) is our Spring in the south, so you may crave fall all you like, I've already had it. Yaaaay Spring!
In winter the cats all gravitate to my bed, anyhow. You wake up all stiff in a tiny corner of your bed, cos they ooooze into a radius of two feet around them, with a weight that is definitely greater than the equivalent amount of lead, but pliable and furry. (That was a long sentence.)
I haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, but I love Mel Brooks. Love love love. Ps I've updated the webpage, but it's still not quite snazzy enough...

How does one pack Shrunken Apple Head for a move?
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 06/14/2006 07:45 AM EST
Wukong, yes I did see that and it was the worst thing I've ever seen in a wrestling ring? I mean cmon, the zombie? That was until the sandman kick his ass with that kendo stick. Then it was down right hilarious! This is great where I live I can watch wrestling monday tuesday thursday and friday. Its gonna seriously cut into my videogame time tho. You know its hard out here for a geek.

My wife and son always look at me strangely when I do that at home (usually when I'm working on something) - "Yip Yip Radio, Yip Yip". I always end up sounding like Carl from Slingblade by the time I finish, though. "Yip Yip, Radio, HmmHmmm" if you can visualize it.
PS: The Steve Martin Pink Panther movie is the worst movie ever released by a major studio (hyperbole aside). Stay awayyyyyy!

It is 11:30 am, I am at work, and I am starving. Hell, even the shrunken apple is starting to look good..reading this candy apple Kool Aid post made me thirsty as well. Are there any petitions to bring this flavor back? Because I think it would be worth signing- it sounds awesome!
Off topic, but I saw a bear while camping this weekend! Check out the pics of my camping excursion if you are as bored at work as I am:

I am in the chick in the photos, incidentally.
freudguy: That movie LOOKED so bad that I haven't yet seen it.

Sitting at work in the rain and bored, havn't posted in a while, so...."hey".
Also saw a sneak preview of Nacho Libre last night. Awesome stuff. I would say go and see it, lives up to the hype in every way.
Got a Snakes on a Plane poster secured too. Life is good right now.
Chestnuts roasted by Fox @ 06/14/2006 11:27 AM EST
And when they pulled the Apple from the twisted, warped, pop culture website, it looked... like.... THIS!
Mwa-hahahahahaha!
Tell 'em Doc Brown sent ya!
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 06/14/2006 12:46 PM EST
Fox: In the trailers, they show a lot of physical comedy (Ie: Slapping, punching, people falling down) for "Nacho Libre" when all I want is to see Jack Black act, since he is comedic gold...was the movie mostly physical comedy, or did it have good dialogue also? Also, nice score on the poster!
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/14/2006 01:32 PM EST
Hmm... has anyone tried drying then candying an apple? It'd be like a glowing combination of Matt's updates.
Chestnuts roasted by Vegan Mike @ 06/14/2006 01:34 PM EST
There was a lot of physical comedy in the movie, some actually made me laugh (I'm sorry). And also a few fart jokes, but all in all, it had the same atmosphere and funky retro odd feel that Napoleon Dynamite has. There are some lines that I can't wait to hear again. Some of the stuff in the movie can only be laughed at by warped people.
There were a couple of parts that only my group laughed at pretty hard, and the place was full of people lacking that certain sense of humor that makes Napoleon Dynamite great.
Ramble, ramble, ramble, Now I'm going to go hang up my Nacho Libre hanging cut out the studio sent us in my office.
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/14/2006 02:12 PM EST
Uh...FOX? Was that you that posted just now using my name?? Maybe you were trying to write a reply to me, but accidently wrote 'Muppet Baby' in the name box..??? I hope so, we don't want 2 of ME running around!
Thanks for the reply, by the way. I loved Napolean Dynamite, so I am sure I will love Nacho Libre!
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/14/2006 02:19 PM EST
That could get confusing.
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby, I mean dohopoki. @ 06/14/2006 02:39 PM EST
I avoided Napo Dyna for a long while based on the inanity of the promos so I'm taking the Nacho ones with a grain of salt. Congrats on getting to see it early, Fox.
I just bought my tickets to go see Pirates at the El Capitan theater (they do a bit of a stage show and have lots of goodies for all the Disney releases) on opening night. The good tix (and then all the tix) sold out for the midnight show so I'm going to the newly added 3 am showtime. Got some great seats for it, now my only worry is I might be seeing the movie with obsessofans who saw the midnight show and stuck around to see it again and "prelaugh" all the jokes.
Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 06/14/2006 02:39 PM EST
Muppet Baby's clone, you have just talked me out of seeing Nacho Libre. I honestly can't see how anyone can stand Napoleon Dynomite.
Chestnuts roasted by Jeff @ 06/14/2006 03:47 PM EST
I must be the only person left on this planet that hasn't seen Napolean Dynamite. Well, me and some poor street urchins in India or Brazil.
Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 06/14/2006 03:51 PM EST
LemurCat: I haven't seen Napolean Dynamite yet either. That's mainly due to my buddy telling me it sucked.
What was the deal with ECW being on the SciFi channel anyways? Am I the only one who doesn't get that?
Chestnuts roasted by Deuce @ 06/14/2006 04:22 PM EST
Deuce, I'm guessin the USA network owns sci-fi so they put it on there. Doesn't really make much sense to me either. Lets hope they don't have anymore zombie type characters.
And I'm sorry everyone but I must admit........I actually enjoyed napolean dynamite. I won't say its my favorite movie of all time but it was kinda funny.
Chestnuts roasted by PRSense @ 06/14/2006 04:48 PM EST
SciFi is owned by USA Networks, and it looks like they needed a place to put ECW, and decided that they had only one other high-profile channel to shunt it to. Even geeks and nerds enjoy some wrasslin' from time to time.
(and yes, "wrasslin'" is considered the proper familiarity by the old school players and announcers. listen to your elders.)
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 06/14/2006 04:48 PM EST
Ahhh.... Now it all becomes clear. I forgot that USA owned SciFi and ECW.
In all honesty, I was kind of glad to see ECW on TV at all. It's been awhile, and I quit watching WWF when they "got the f out".
Call me crazy, but I think I'm starting to miss WCW!
Chestnuts roasted by Deuce @ 06/14/2006 05:10 PM EST
No way!!! Ultimate Warrior burned wrestling into my head forever as a child. WWE is just getting good now anyways. DX has returned. Degeneration X, is at least interesting enough to keep me glued to my TV set on Monday and Friday nights. Not to mention that mexican guy who "manages" Umaga cracks my shit up.

OMG it's Vegan Mike! Holy crap, where have you been?
Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 06/14/2006 07:00 PM EST
I'm an unabashed fan of catchphrases, so Dynamite was amusing for me once I got past my reservations and watched it. There are plenty of recent movies (Shaun of the Dead, 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, off the top of my head) that are actually funnier though. Is it too early to start pining for the Tenacious D movie?
Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 06/14/2006 07:40 PM EST
Yeah, Napolean Dynamite was NOT what I expected based on the hype. We watched it on an illegal copy we bought on the streets in Seoul, and it took me 2 viewings before I liked it. Once you accept the fact that nothing actually happens and enjoy it for what it is- a look in the life of these strange characters- then it can be appreciated.
I am SO GLAD to see both ECW and DX back- thank god! Maybe now we will see some actual wrestling and better storylines!
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby (The Original) @ 06/14/2006 08:46 PM EST
You paid for an illegal copy? I thought that they invented the internet so that people wouldn't have to do that anymore.
BTW, speaking of illegal copies. You never got back to me about those Serenity comics. I still have the scans. Send me an e-mail if you still need them. jeff@playervsfish.com

Hehe hi back Ryane! I've been overly busy with all kindsa stuff... finished my Master's Degree, got into grad school for next year, might get into med school for next year (I should know tomorrow... eek!), got a med school application ready for '07... yeah, all that stuff. I've been reading X-E all the time, but for some stupid reason I stopped posting. I'm back now, though
Chestnuts roasted by Vegan Mike @ 06/15/2006 03:26 PM EST
off topic, but i just found my complete set of army ants toys. i'm strapped for cash right now so i'm tempted to put them up on e-bay. there's only like 2 or 3 weapons missing so i'ts an almsot complete set. on the other hand, if i end up getting anything less than a hundred or so for it then i'll be depriving myself of nostalgia for inadequate compensation. so the question goes to matt and the rest of you toy collecting odd people. is it worth it to auction them?
Chestnuts roasted by jon @ 06/16/2006 05:09 PM EST
No. Do not sell your stuff. I sold all my Ninja Turtle, MOTU, and Voltron figures at a local Flea Market. I made some dough, but I really miss all that cool stuff and have regretted the decision ever since.

Movie companies release collectors dvd box sets....it would be cool if Kool-Aid would put out a special box containing one recreated packet each of every flavor they ever made. Maybe for their next 100 - 125 - 150th...whatever anniversary they're nearest too.

I'm making an apple head first thing tommorow.
Oh and that whole sublyminol message thing is ridiculous. Is there a hidden message in it or not. If so it's not making me want a lymon.
Last week i bought a pack of trident gum that said it was made with xylitol. Its a new sugar substitute. I looked it up on wikipedia and found out the only bad thing it can do is give you the shits if you consume more than your supposed to. Just don't give it to your dog.
