This edition of the X-Entertainment Saturday Night Thread is brought to you by...
Anchor Bay's "Fright Pack," a collection of six "campy classics" dressed in an awesomely shitty beer six-pack-esque box that was too cool to pass up on even despite the fact that I already own two of the movies inside. The set runs for 25 bucks, and if you'll forgive the parade of italics, includes: Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Return of the Killer Tomatoes, Transylvania 6-5000, Return to Horror High, Sleepaway Camp and Vamp. Rent out a lakehouse and bring about 6,200 Amstels...you've got a party.
Here's to hoping at least a few of you are spending this SNT in the dark, watching a bad scary flick with a laptop over your crotch and alcohol in arm's reach.

I think "awesomely shitty" can be used to describe a lot of things that are celebrated on this little corner of the web, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.
First.

Wow, SNT, man! Boy I'm tired...
Anyway, I took advantage of Free Comic Book Day, I got a copy of Red Sonja. At least it's sexy.
Hmm...poll. Since last week's SNL was the Best of TV Funhouse, what were your favorite cartoons? I'll say my bit later.

Also, I found cans of Vault! If I wasn't so strapped for cash, I would've bought em.

I've got a few bottles of Vault and a few cans of Surge. Someday, I'll prove/disprove the "THEY'RE THE SAME" debate.
Yay, it's raining! Yay, I'm lame.

Wasn't there once a soda called "Kick" that boasted having twice the caffeine of Mt. Dew? I remember drinking quite a bit of something like that back during my high-school days before moving on to hard drugs. Speaking of drugs, the above image is making me thirsty for Foster's.
Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 05/06/2006 10:22 PM EST
Seeing as I hate people and all, watching a movie and drinking booze is most likely what I'll be doing tonight.
Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 05/06/2006 10:24 PM EST
That is an awesome set! Too bad it doesn't have the original Killer Tomatoes too.
Can I do a mini threadjack and ask if anyone has any good Kong related names for a dog? I have to send registration papers this week (As it stands he'll be Bean of Skull Island).

Sitting at home on the computer on a Saturday night?
Hah, teh loser is you!
Oh wait...nevermind.

I hit up Jenkinson's Boardwalk today and scored some awesome crane machine prizes, including (but not limited to) a Pacman and a yellow Marshmallow Peep.
In my attempts to win said Peep, I accidentally won a purple Peep and a blue Peep. I was so agitated that I left and came back some time later, where I pumped quarter after quarter into the machine while this little redheaded, 10-year-old bitch stood behind me, cunningly watching my every move... waiting for me to run out of quarters so that she could go in for the kill.
But, ON MY LAST TWO QUARTERS, I won the yellow Marshmallow Peep! Yay!
Chestnuts roasted by Hey I'm Jeff @ 05/06/2006 10:37 PM EST
Nah, my Saturday night is being spent sitting in my slightly busted computer chair, staring at my monitor and thinking about all the stuff I should be working on. No alcohol yet tonight, but had plenty whilest out clubbing yesterday. Plus I met one of the girls in this month's issue of Playboy. Not my type, though.
But your post did remind me I have a copy of Elvira's Haunted Hills have yet to watch. Maybe I should bust that out tonight. BOOBIES!!
Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 05/06/2006 10:37 PM EST
Frankenhooker on VHS, 6 bottles of Old Peculier, Nintendo DS, and a clingy tuxedo cat make up what is bound to be an awesome and laid back Saturday night. P.S. Ugh Sleepaway Camp! Elvira makes up for it though. Not a bad selection.
Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 05/06/2006 10:38 PM EST
Hey I'm Jeff, you should've told the little kid, I just cashed my enviable paycheck into quarters and I'm not going anywhere without that yellow peep, so step off!

SLEEPAWAY CAMP= classic slasher flick. Most disturbing lines- "Look at all that young fresh chicken. Where I come from we call 'em baldies. Makes your mouth water, don't it?"
Chestnuts roasted by Stevie B. @ 05/06/2006 11:15 PM EST
Hey all-
In addition to the "Fright Pack" I bought at the local Best Buy, directly below it was a lone box-set called "Toxie's Top Ten." HOW could I pas that up? It has the best of the worst in it.
We're starting the night with some Pabst Blue Ribbon and a viewing of "Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator."
Chestnuts roasted by Pepe @ 05/06/2006 11:35 PM EST
Pepe-that sounds awesome
also alchohol check and movie check but I still need a laptop so I may fall asleep and not check back I had to dig holes for tree planting all day and it wore me out.
Chestnuts roasted by mrjayberry @ 05/07/2006 12:03 AM EST
Hey Matt, I do have the laptop, the alcohol, and the dark, but the movie isn't scary. I'm watching The Dream Team. I guess if I'm going to reject the whole scary movie thing, Boyle and Keaton are fine alternatives. Cute movie.
Chestnuts roasted by Bludge @ 05/07/2006 12:04 AM EST
Today was free comic book day??? And I missed it? Damn. I love free comic book day! I haven't bought a comic in ten years, but I can't pass up a stack of free comics. Free stuff rules!
Chestnuts roasted by Destro @ 05/07/2006 12:22 AM EST
Bludge I'm not watching a scary movie either. I guess I own Spike Lees Bamboozeled so its on right now. Already kinda fun because there was a Dvd "sneak peek"
and it reminded me when you had to explain to older people about dvds.
Chestnuts roasted by mrjayberry @ 05/07/2006 01:11 AM EST
I still have to explain to older people about dvds.
Chestnuts roasted by sharkshow @ 05/07/2006 01:20 AM EST
Felt like being from the geek gheto tonight so I got laptop and a 40 ounce. So I got the best of both worlds going on now. But I'm watching the Return to Salems lot. HOrrible but not as horrible as I'd like, and the main character was the guy who played the ADA in the first part of law & order so I keep expecting him to object.
Chestnuts roasted by edthacow @ 05/07/2006 01:57 AM EST
For those in need of a horror flick, Freddy Vs Jason is just now coming on channel USA, 2:00 AM EST.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt(#2?) @ 05/07/2006 02:04 AM EST
Oh man, Transylvania 6-5000! I would have bought the entire pack just for that. Too cool of a movie!
Chestnuts roasted by JiveTurkey @ 05/07/2006 02:06 AM EST
Destro -- It's a trap!
Seriously, I spent more money in comic stores today than I intended to. Sure, it wasn't much (a $5 Sandman compilation and an exploding penguin, pictured in the link), but the original plan was to keep the twenty in my wallet intact.
Ah well. Exploding penguins - and Flying Circus on at 11:30PM - make me happy. :¬)
Chestnuts roasted by The ORIGINAL Paul @ 05/07/2006 02:12 AM EST
wow I had forgotten about that Transylvania 6-5000, only part I remember is the cool theme song with some vampire like guy saying 'Transylvania 6-5000' like 15 times, and then myself saying it like 50 times over after the movie.
Chestnuts roasted by Edthacow @ 05/07/2006 02:13 AM EST

Otherwise same, but the bad scary movie comes from my TV. The Evil Dead uncut from a non-cable channel. I love Finnish television, where it's okay to show tree rapes at 11 PM.
Chestnuts roasted by dudefromfinland @ 05/07/2006 06:07 AM EST
In America, the tree rape would have been cut out and replaced with a pony shooting a child in the face. Americans haaate sex, but violence is AOK apparently.
I don't drink, but when I got home from work I watched Star Wars. Not an awful little Saturday night.
Chestnuts roasted by Spoodles @ 05/07/2006 08:17 AM EST
Huh. I actually spent my SNT away from my computer, eating pizza and playing Risk 2210 with some friends. Remember, you can't hug with nuclear arms, but you can use them to turn all of Asia into a radioactive slagheap. And really, isn't that what it's all about?
Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 05/07/2006 08:28 AM EST
Interesting, I spent part of yesterday watching the original 1977 STAR WARS which, I confess, had been awhile. I guess the news that the originals were being released by that bearded, money grubbing,...(I digress,) got me fired up.
POLL QUESTION Will Lucas release a big 6 disc extravaganza and try to make even MORE money?
Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/07/2006 08:39 AM EST
The Manimal:
My guess is yes, but not until Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is out in full force (pun intended)
Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 05/07/2006 08:58 AM EST
I was offered the chance to buy the original VHS of Star Wars at a yard sale yesterday, but I smiled and passed because I knew I'd have it in my grubby, little paws before too long.
The Manimal: Yes, he'll release a box set I think. It'll include all of the deleted scenes and archival material that was left off of the original boxset.
Cameron T.: I think it'll come out on regular DVD. Then he'll release just the movies on HD. Then he'll release a HD-DVD box set. He's got to suck the next generation out of their dough too.

and goddamn i dont think ive posted this frequently EEEEVVVAAAHHH!!!
Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 05/07/2006 12:33 PM EST
Actually, it wasn't on last night. I looked at the schedule, and it's on Thursday's at midnight, now. No Birdman, either. That's on Wed's at 12, and there are 2 shows back to back.
Saturday's are back to being all anime - which I'm thankful for. Even if I've seen Fullmetal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo 400 times each, I'll still most likely watch them again.
I see there is a Birdman episode on the Friday Night Fix lineup that you can watch online, anytime now.

Kevin- it hasn't been reviewed, but I believe the villian was featured in some article.

I haven't had a Pop Tart in about 4 years...man, now I really want one!
Saturday Night for me consisted of chaperoning the PROM. I was the poor unfortunate teacher in charge of the festivities this year- but, it was actually a hell of a good time! The students and I danced it up, and all went well. Afterwards, fellow teachers came over to my place and got drunk and ate the free food we scored from the prom. Not a bad time at all.
What's everyone doing today? Myself- school work, laundry, watching poker on tv, and some movies later on.
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 05/07/2006 03:07 PM EST
....alhough, I don't have any movies as campy as Matt's six pack to watch!

I gotta do laundry sometime today, I'll mope around because I don't wanna go to work tomorrow and start off another shitty week... and now you guys are makin me want pop tarts too. Luckily I have some (sans icing) in the cupboard!
I'll probably watch Advent Children later on, for the 7th time or something like that.

Argh, I missed Friday's topic, and I LOVE to talk about Disney... so I will anyway:
Matt- If you're at the Polynesian, you need to make dinner reservations for the restaurant 'Ohana on a night that there are fireworks at the Magic Kingdom. When the fireworks start, the restaurant dims its lights and plays the same music/sounds they play in the park, and you can look out the giant windows and see the whole display perfectly across the lake. My boyfriend set up our dinner without me knowing all this was going to happen, and needless to say I was putty in his hands for days afterward.
Even if you don't give a crap about fireworks, they have awesome tropical drinks and they bring you a neverending supply of grilled meats on giant stakes. From their firepit. When I die I want to be buried under their bar.

I got final projects coming out of my ears, so that's been my groove today. Waiting to start The Sopranos until that's all handled so I'm dying...
Doing some research on my second choice doggie name (Obi-Wan KenoBean) and I came across a cool Lost/Star Wars related article: here
Speaking of Lost, anybody playing the online Hanso Foundation game? Coolest promotional website since the Requiem For a Dream site way back when.

If you like that, you'll probably love the Not Pron game.

Muppet Baby, in regards to your question, I am polishing up my resume to turn in to the office of the school I substitute at tomorrow. HOPEFULLY I will have a contract there next fall and chaperone the prom next spring! Okay, maybe not the prom, but anyway, I just want to thank everyone on this blog for constantly making me laugh. I want to give special thanks to the regulars like squee4242, Mystie, Muppet Baby, dohopki, Manimal and Kingklash for not only validating my nostalgic tendencies but also for making them even funnier. Finally, thank you Matt for a wonderful website. I don't want to sound cheesy, but I think you all understand. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good night and an even better tomorrow. See ya!

Excellent Sopranos tonight. I had to watch through my fingers at some points.

I'll be teaching grades 7-12 langauge arts classes, and I couldn't be more excited about it. Yeti, this is going to made up but it is true: I was going to make a joke about you becoming a teacher(you seem like such an upstanding anti-social kinda guy with a disdain for authority) but I guess the joke is on me.
Is there anyone on this thing who...?
(A) is not a teacher
(B) is not going to become a teacher soon
(C) is considering a career in teaching
(D) all of the above
Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/08/2006 10:09 PM EST
Bludge: Thanks for the kind words, and welcome to the profession! Think twice before you let yourself be in charge of a PROM though- that damn thing consumed my life for 4 straight months...often, I would only get home at 6:30 PM, and had been at school since 7:30 AM...so, it makes for loooong days.
As for myself- despite LOVING my job, I am quitting!! The boyfriend got into Masters at our old university, so we are moving back to New Brunswick for next year. I will be demoted from being an awesome grade 10 English teacher with her OWN CLASSROOM to....a lowly substitute teacher...just like Bludge. Oh Jesus!
But, it's cool. I am tired of this rural area. My school only has 150 students total, and the town has a population of 5,000....of which only 1,000 are English. (I live in Quebec) SO, I will enjoy living in a city again.
Sorry for the long post- felt like sharing! And who knew there were so many teachers on the site? I thought it was just Manimal and me. Wow!
Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 05/08/2006 10:20 PM EST
I was going to become an elementary school teacher, but I switched majors to English.
I think there are a lot of teachers here because the occupation attracts a lot of people with fond memories of their childhood, and of ages when they too were in school. Surprise, surprise: so do nostalgia websites!

I am not a teacher, nor do I want to become one. I'm an engineer. It's a damn fine profession, and I'm curious if anyone else here is one.
In my mind, the only thing that sucks about being an engineer is the potential to screw up. If you make a bad mistake and none of your peer reviewers catches it, your company could be out a lot of money. Worse yet, you could kill someone.
That's why I wanted a job at Hasbro. If you screw up, you're unlikely to hurt or kill somebody, unless irresponsible parents do something like giving a toy with small parts to a two year old. Also, designing toys sounds like the coolest job on earth. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get my foot in the door there.
