04/14/2006 Entry: "Coke BlaK Attack!"

Thursday started off typicially enough. I got to work, I checked to see how many more of my Sea-Monkeys died, I hit up every e-mail account I use except the one that actually relates to my job, and I pretended to be on the phone whenever I heard somebody annoying behind me in fear of them striking up one of those terrible "HAY it's the morning let's discuss stuff" conversations. Then I get a real call. It's from Kev, friend and coworker. "Matt, you know about this Coke coffee shit?" I knew where he was going with this. Word had already spread about Coca-Cola's troop of oompas, who were scouring the city this week to give everyone with a free hand a bottle of "Coke BlaK," a new soda enhanced with "coffee essence." They mark "coffee essence" in fairly large print right on the labels, thereby obliterating 100% of the potential heterosexual male market. I digress -- Kev told me to head down to 42nd. The Coke Folks were about to give away four hundred million bottles of BlaK. I didn't have my camera, but he did. Needless to say, I told my project manager that I had to cancel a meeting to handle a "family emergency" that could be magically rectified in the time it took for me to leave the building, walk to 42nd and grab as much Coke BlaK as the oompas would let me carry. Meanwhile, this is what Kev was seeing...

With the speed and efficiency of a top secret spy organization, Coke's team of magicians emptied an unmarked truck containing no less than FOUR HUNDRED TRILLION bottles of Coke BlaK, which were then poured into no less than FOUR HUNDRED MILLION big giant tubs filled with ice. Their goal: Get as many pedestrians to drink the holy drink as possible. Nobody turns down a free sample, and only an idiot would turn down a free sample that came in a glass bottle with a Coke logo on it. This was going to be hot, and after cursing out the elevator for taking too long using such horrible words that I'm almost going to feel like I have to apologize to it tomorrow, I arrived. I arrived, I looked up, and I shouted to God: "Yo big man, you behind this?"

While the assorted worker bees, tourists and vagrants were initially perplexed, everyone soon realized that people were giving out free soda, and if this wasn't a reason to act like you had cancer and they were handing over limited quantities of the cure, I don't know what is. The crowds went absolutely crazy. Hands, feet, heads...everywhere. So, so, so many heads, hands and feet. Though Coke's peeps mandated that everyone was only allowed one bottle, it was very easy to circumvent that spiteful bit of lameness by pocketing each bottle before walking up to the next vendor. I left with two, and I feel like an asshole because I totally could've nailed eight or nine if I had any balls. Then again, nothing will grow testicles faster than the idea of a gigantic, absolutely GIGANTIC soda corporation believing in shady market research and mass-producing a soft drink with the term "coffee essence" printed on the label.

I kid, really I do. Truth is, I've been looking forward to Coke BlaK's debut to the point where you'd swear Coke BlaK was debuting on Christmas morning. I love it when new sodas come out, even bad ones. That's not to say that Coke BlaK is bad or anything, but it's certainly weird, and every time I read "BlaK" I keep thinking they must've named it after one of the girls from En Vogue. But that wouldn't make sense, because everyone in En Vogue died years ago when I killed and ate them.

Look at all that Coke BlaK. And that's just one of the thirty billion tubs. I swear I heard someone in the background yapping about how "there's starving kids in China."

Managing to lift three bottles and two swank cardboard Coke BlaK carriers between us, Kev and I slowly walked back to the office, relishing our victory in a sea of hundreds upon hundreds of others who were doing the same. There wasn't a soul in Times Square without a bottle of complimentary Coke BlaK, but for all of this clever/shrewd/whatever marketing to work, the drink really needed to not be awful. I'm happy to report that Coke BlaK is NOT awful. I will never buy it, but it's not awful.

In a way, it's actually almost sort of halfway to good. Picture cream soda with a splash of cold coffee, but with the psychosomatical edge of drinking it out of a fucking Praise Jesus awesome glass Coca-Cola bottle. (Hopefully the glass bottle thing is for keeps and wasn't just a special deal for today's promotion.) The flavor is in no way overpowering or offensive, relying more on the merits of having a label that says "COFFEE" than, you know, actually tasting like coffee. For me, this one's all about presentation. Glass bottle, revised swirly brown/off-white Coke logo color motif, and the coke-rem de coke-rem -- black bottle caps. I'm so happy soda companies finally realized how badass black bottle caps are, because I've been saying it for years and I prefer to think that the reason they use them now is completely on me. Disagree and I'll smash my bottle and cut you with whatever part is left in my hand.

It's sleek, it's upscale, it'll probably cost more than most other sodas, and it comes in a glass bottle. It's Coke BlaK. Something hovers over the "a," but I'm not sure how to type it.

You know what the BlaKmobile does? Sits around looking pretty.

Well, I'm a sucker for all things Coke, so count me in. And just because I'll never get this chance again, first?

But will this stuff fade into the same obscurity as Crystal Pepsi and Coke II??

Chestnuts roasted by flygrl358 @ 04/14/2006 02:14 AM EST

I tasted it and it was OK. I drink more and I wanted to die. I couldn't finish it. It got to the point where it was almost as bad as Jones Holiday Soda. I will never buy it again. Look for it to go the way of Pepsi Blue. Some things should never be attached to the Pepsi or Coke name. I do love the bottle though.

Chestnuts roasted by King Chachi @ 04/14/2006 02:17 AM EST

Add me to the list of people who think that the bottle design is great. I'll probably try the stuff just because I don't want to be the only person in a conversation about it saying that I haven't had it. Plus, once again, the design is spot-on.

"You know what the BlaKmobile does? Sits around looking pretty."

That made me laugh out loud.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt(#2?) @ 04/14/2006 02:31 AM EST

At work, I got a free sample from our Coke rep last week, as I'd been bugging him to try it. And you know what? Sorry, Matt...don't cut me too deep...It's *AWFUL*! Just take flat Coke and pour it into cold, bitter coffee that was made eons ago and voila! - Coke Blak. And the aftertaste....blech!

Now the new Dr. Pepper Berries and Creme...I'm eager to try that. Has anyone out there tried this new Dr. Pepper yet?

Chestnuts roasted by Jason @ 04/14/2006 02:44 AM EST

Bottle design does look cool...but I will likely never drink it. I HATE coffee. With a passion. Horrible, nasty stuff...

Hi there.. it's Coca-Cola Blk. You can copy and paste the funky symbol from me if you like wink

Here in Europe we have something similar, a cola + coffee mixture, but it isn't from the big guys! Looks good, hope you enjoy.

Chestnuts roasted by Soj @ 04/14/2006 03:15 AM EST

I'm quite interested to try it, but it takes me a while to try the latest "drink crazes." I think it was more than a year after the release of Code Red that I had my first can and the initial and perpetual addiction that followed.

Oh, Crystal Pepsi, that takes me back. How sad not enough people liked it.

But Coke and coffee??? I have my doubts. I'm a coffee nutball and as being such despise sugar in my beautiful brew. Then again, a mocha every so often is just what this doctor ordered.

Matt, I can't tell from the pics, but are those UPS drivers handing out the freebies or is it just a coincidence that they look exactly the like UPS drivers? Coincidence . . . or conspiracy?

Now I have to know.

Chestnuts roasted by inkmage @ 04/14/2006 03:15 AM EST

And another thing, because it's hard to keep this rambler from rambling, does anyone remember a Coke product test marketed in the mid-90's that was sorta Coke, sorta Dr. Pepper, sorta fruity-like. I think it might have been called OK. That's probably why it failed, because it was simply okay. The thing that was memorable about it though was the can and the specially crafted vending machine with pop-art sorta comic-book-esque illustrations of some vacous dude's face. It was all black and white too--correction; black and silver if memory serves . . . and maybe some red. Or did I just dream this stupid experiment by the kooks at Coke?

Glass bottles sound like the only good thing about it. I don't like coffee, and I especially wouldn't like it in my Coke.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 04/14/2006 04:10 AM EST

Costs the same as an energy drink here in the Boston area. Like 2.09 after tax, bottle deposts, etc. We have had it here for well over a month, from around the time FOX started the American Idol Blak campaign.

I think it tastes pretty good. Good mixer, actually, toss in a little vodka and it's balls to the wall mang.

Chestnuts roasted by goeatweeds @ 04/14/2006 07:30 AM EST

I've tried the new Berries and Cream Dr. Pepper. I really like it. I think it's better than the Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, mainly because the Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper didn't really taste any different from regular Dr. Pepper to me. The Berries and Cream, however, has a distinctive taste separate from regular. It's hard to describe the taste, but the Berries and Cream kinda reminded me of a grape soda mixed with Dr. Pepper. And you can definitely taste a hint of the cream flavour. All in all, I enjoy it.

Dammit, I went out and searched high and low for Coke Blak yesterday in the middle of a fucking THUNDERSTORM and you're getting it handed to you for free.

I hate you. So so much. You wanna come over and rip the heads off my dolls while you're at it?

Slut.

Every time a new soda comes out and it is written up here, I feel a need to try it to "fit in". But I actually want to try this one. Jones holiday on the other hand was a cruel cruel joke.
inkmage
Yes, OK Soda was meant to be the "suicide" that you made for yourself at the fountain, all mixed up for you. I know I've babbled it so many times before, but I Loved That Soda! And I bet if I love Blak too, they'll rip it off the market too.

The scene opens. A guy is walking down the street, cell phone in one hand, coffee in the other. Cut to a guy coming from the other direction, also talking on the cell phone, drinking Coca-Cola. They collide. Fluids are exchanged.

"You got Coca-Cola in my coffee!"

"You got coffee in my Coca-Cola!"

They pause. Hesitantly, they drink.

"God, that's wretched. I should cut you."

"Kill it with fire."

I'm gonna try this stuff today. I am also a soda addict, so I always like trying new flavors. However, I am hesitant to try Berries & Cream Dr. Pepper, especially since I'm such a DP fan. I think I'm one of the very few people who enjoyed (and even remember) Dr. Pepper Red Fusion.

I'm addicted to Blak and I'm not afraid to say it. I'm also addicted to Hubba Bubba Bubblegum Soda (which is now back on the market after a 15 year hiatus). The flavor reminds me of a Coke float with chocolate ice cream.

We've had Coke BlaK for about 2 months here in Houston - and yes, they are in that glass bottle. The only thing that sucks about it is that it was freakin $4.99 for a 4 pack at the grocery store! :-0

It is very good though, and everyone that has tried it concurs with my feelings.

Hee, just saw a clever King Kong/Glad bags commercial.
I am a coffee lover, though this weekend was the first time I've drunk it black (waiter came by and swooped the additives). I felt like it was a rite of passage or something. My usual preference is a really strong brew, but with lots of cream and a dash of sugar. I don't know if I can hang with the Blak...maybe if it was spiked.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 04/14/2006 10:49 AM EST

Haven't tried it yet. I just wanted to point out how cool it was that there was a Fanta ad at the bottom of the coke article...SODA RULES!

I tried Coke BlaK last week, it was very similar to Pepsi Latte, which I tried when I was in Thailand. It (referring to both Coke BlaK and Pepsi Latte) tastes like the respective cola on first taste, then briefly crosses paths with coffee flavor as it runs through your mouth and has a coffee aftertaste. Not at all bad, just interesting. A good one time experience (and souvenier bottle for my strange bottle collection) but sadly I have gone BlaK and will be going back.

I miss OK cola so much.
Well, I think I miss what the cans looked like more, I'm not sure if Daniel Clowes actually did the artwork for them but it was a darn good imitation if it wasn't.

Chestnuts roasted by Glitter Godzilla @ 04/14/2006 11:14 AM EST

. . . How is it pronounced? Because a radio announcer this morning called it "Coke Blake". They may have been dumbtarded.

Chestnuts roasted by Julie @ 04/14/2006 11:15 AM EST

Yeah I like Coke Blak a lot, being a heterosexual male aside. It costs 5.69 for a 4-pack here in Austin, but one day every Randalls in town offered 4 for 1.99. So I basically just loaded up my car and vowed to never buy it again. I can't wait until they make even more seemingly gross stuff, like Coke with "orange juice essence".

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 04/14/2006 11:19 AM EST

this stuff is excellent. i was first hesistant to try it, but i'm glad i did. too bad it's 5.79 for a four pack.

Chestnuts roasted by matt g @ 04/14/2006 11:26 AM EST

I tried it, liked it at first, but I couldn't even finish the 8 oz. bottle. Halfway through it starts to get to you and make you not want to drink it for a good while. yet as I think about it now, i want to drink another half bottle again.

Chestnuts roasted by Pancake @ 04/14/2006 11:31 AM EST

Chestnuts roasted by Law Dog @ 04/14/2006 11:43 AM EST

Julie:

I think it's supposed to be pronounced "Black," but the line over the A, if taken literally, means it's a long vowel sound.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 04/14/2006 11:46 AM EST

@Pancake: buy only half bottles then smile.

When it crosses the ocean I'm certainly going to give it a go. I thought Vanilla Coke was gross, but it actually kind of tastes nice. It doesn't beat a real scoop of vanilla ice cream in your coke though. That stuff is delirious although it probably doesn't sound that way wink.

I wonder what this Blak thing will taste like.

Thank you, Coca Cola marketing gods for dousing us with your miracles of product placement. May your bonuses be forever high.

Chestnuts roasted by Jorge @ 04/14/2006 11:46 AM EST

Oh god, this stuff is completely awful. It's like flat, cornsyrup water and coffee flavoring that have been mystically included in the same bottle, but have not managed to mix together.

The result is something that tastes like you would imagine tongue kissing keith richards first thing in the morning would taste like.

And you got the scene all wrong, Jedoc.

It's like this:

"You got Coca-Cola in my coffee!"

I wasn't overly impressed with it. But I'd like to try it with some Jack daniels or something.

It was cheap too. I got a four pack here in san Francisco from Safeway for $2.50 But I did have to get the guy to get it out of the back room for me as they hadn't even bothered to put it on their shelves yet. I don't think I'll be buying this on a regular basis.

Also was it just me, or does it seem overcarbonated?

I posted this on another thread but it seems appropriate to post it again now. Berries and Cream Dr. Pepper tastes like Creme Savers with a little Dr. Pepper aftertaste. It was not bad actually. I would probably not drink it if I wanted a nice refreshing soda, but I might drink it if I wanted to eat Creme Savers but was too lazy to unwrap 20 of them.

Oh, and about the line thingy over the work "BlaK". In the press releases and things it is written as a straight line (which bothers me, since that would be pronounced "Blake"wink. But on the bottle, it's written more artistically and it is kind of a wavy line. Which still serves no apparent purpose except to look pretty. If they want to fancy-up their vowels, they ought to at least use the correct diacritical markings.

First impressions: Bottle was very cool. Initial sniff produced an oder of what I would describe as a dead moose. I've never tasted dead, rotting moose, but I imagine that Coke BLaK is pretty close to it.

I tried Coke BlaK when I saw it in the gas station... the bottle was the same, and nary a 'coffee' implication to be had.
I figured it was a Coke energy drink or something.
I ended up not taking more than the initial gulp; it was revolting!
I also grabbed a bottle of the Berries and Cream Dr Pepper, and was very interested in it.
Alas... I also grabbed a bag of the new Wasabi Funyons and didn't open the DP until after trying the funyons (which are great!), and didn't get an enjoyable flavor at all! Will be trying it again when I'm not eatting something funky!

I don't really like coffee, so I doubt I'll like this.

They were handing out GLASS bottles? Doesn't that seem...unsafe? I mean, you can drink like a fish on the streets of New Orleans, but heaven help you if it's in a glass bottle, even if it's soda, the cops will kill you.

I tried Dr. Pepper Berries and Cream last night, wasn't actually so bad. I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, drinking it out of a crazy straw helped.

Barry -

Is the soda seriously called "latte" and coffee flavored? Does it at least have cream flavor too? Because seriously, "latte" means "milk" in several languages, and refers specifically to a milky coffee in English.

Heh. I work in one of those "big brother is watching you" type offices. They actually record all our phone calls and can monitor every movement of our computer screens. The record some of our phone conversations with computer video and we go over a few of them once a month as part of our Quality Check.

BUT the people in my department (boscovs.com customer service) are totally cool. So we often goof off and throw paper airplanes at one another and have discussions on like, everything on TV. Lost, CSI, Mythbusters, Sopranos, Surreal Life, etc etc. The other day we had a discussion on soda. Today we had a discussion about buttsecks.

I tried that Coke Blak, it tastes pretty nasty alright. Coffee and soda do not mix in my opinion.

I did try the berries and cream Dr. Pepper that they have in some markets, it's pretty good. It's sweeter than the average drink but the berry taste is still very present. Nice stuff.

I'd like to try that Dublin Dr. Pepper sometime. The drink is bottled in Dublin, TX (where the company is based) and it is different from others in that instead of corn syrup they use straight up cane sugar. I hear you can buy it online.

Dude, you guys only got your freebies on Thursday? The Blakmobile and said attendents were in front of Penn Station on Wednesday ... AND ... some of my buddies snagged their free samples in a hermetically sealed time-capsule-esque plastic tube, numbered for collection and all of that shit. The one I am planning on stealing from the chick in the cube in back of me is #420 out of 1000 or something. I figure I've got a date with eBay destiny with this one, if I wait it out a year or so.

As for the taste, it's not bad. Syrupy Coke, coffee ice cream without the cream. It's got "Shitty Liquor Hangover Drink" written all over it though. Which makes me think I'll be cracking into one tomorrow morning.

First of all, happy birthday to me. I'm 27 today. My uncle, biological father, and youngest sister took me to Applebees, and then I went and blew a wad of cash on movies from the FYE across the parking lot (gotta love shopping centers, especially new ones).

Second, no, I haven't tried Coke BlaK yet, though I have heard about it. Has anyone else seen the new Dr. Pepper Berries & Cream? Apparently the second in their "Soda Fountain Classics" line, I don't know how long it's been around, but I only saw it in the Audubon Acme this week...and it's on sale. I can't resist a new soda flavor that's on sale.

And thankfully, this one is pretty good, better than the Dr. Pepper Cherry Vanilla. It really does taste like berry and cream soda. If you like berries and you like cream soda, both the diet and the regular are highly recommended.

Because I've been on a Little Shop of Horrors kick lately I have to start this entry by saying "When I was younger, just a bad little kid" I learned the term suicide as it applied to mixed soft drinks. So I got the idea to come out with a line of official Suicide mixed drinks. They'd be the standard Dr. Pepper and Sprite, or Orange and Pepsi, sorta mixes but they'd have names and graphics pertaining to different ways or implements of suicide. There'd be "The Noose," the "Skyscraper Swan Dive," the "Overdose" etc. At the time I thought I was brilliant and would make a million bucks if I could sell this marketing idea. Was I morbid or just creative?

As I grew up I realized, why market mixed drinks that people make themselves? But these days it's all in the marketing. You can sell tap water for 10 bucks as long as the plastic bottle has some beautiful underwater graphics on it. So maybe someone will market my idea, someone reading this very blog, and if you swipe the idea, may God have mercy on your soul before I enact my revenge . . .

Because when I was a kid I also thought someone should make a Star Wars version of Battleship. This was 1985 or so, and what-da-ya-know, fifteen years later, some bastard stole my dumb childhood idea.

By the by, thank you Matt #2 for the oh-so thorough OK information. I really did like that dude's face on the can. I still remember the exact place the vending machine was located in our high school as the powers that be sold our education out to big business. DAMN THEM ALL!!!

inkmage,

I think your idea for marketing Suicide drinks is genius!! It may not go over well with a lot of people, but I think you could find a niche. (Until you get sued because somebody decided to commit suicide solely because of the drink, and you are completely responsible for their actions.) I still think it's brilliant.

Pepsi Kona was actually only test marketed in the greater Philadelphia area, so while I remember the product well and view Coke Blak as little more than a Pepsi Kona rip off, 99% of the country has no idea such a product ever existed.

I have never heard of the term "Suicide" for when you mix sodas up at the soda fountain, my best friend calls that blend "swamp water"

I have never heard of the term "Skyscraper Swan Dive" either but I like it.

Way too many quotation marks.

I don't even remember the OK soda but it sounds interesting. Too bad Max headroom was in the pepsi commercials they could of used him in the OK soda commericals. On the Wiki page about it, they had two hotlines, and one was a dateline number and one was in spanish.

That pepsi latte can and the concept looks GAWD awful!! The combos they think up. I do surveys online so I know ideas for some products, and I seen the dessert delights or whatever it is before all ya'll. I even had to rate from 1-5 the ideas they had for names for the thing. w00t.

I got paid yesterday and so I bought a guitar and an amp from somebody I met on craigslist and I went to Fry's and I bought an xbox DDR pad and ultramix. So go me.

You can buy them by the case at the Dr Pepper museum here, and at some places in Waco/the surrounding areas. Dublin itself is not the home of DP (that's in Dallas, now), but it is the last US bottling plant to still use Pure cane sugar. Dublin's about an hour and 10 minutes from Waco...

I've always been a sucker for new soft drinks. MD Code Red, Vanilla Coke, Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, tried 'em all. Sure, this odd compulsion of mine has lead me astray on more than one occasion (*cough*Crystal Pepsi*cough*), but by and large, no complaints!

Waiting for the Berries & Cream Dr. Pepper...

Pepsi Blue sucked, Live Wire rocks, Code Red sucked, all these new ones are pretty much sucky except for Holiday Spice, yeah I liked that shit...maybe for next year!

Crystal Pepsi, I always called it Crystal Clear Pepsi...I loved it. I remember buying it for ski club trips in 7th grade with those little potato strips, the crispy ones in the tiny cans. They were great too!
I kinda like the Black Cherry Vanilla Coke, but really how much shit do they need to add to shit? Like Dr. Pepper. Don't people drink it for the "Dr. Pepper" taste, and not some crazy ass berry cream flavor?

About Crystal Pepsi, that was what first brought me to XE. It was actually around this time of year two years ago. I heard a Crystal Pepsi reference on an episode of Fooly Cooly and did a search that lead me to that Captian Mike site, which had a link to XE and it's been love ever since.

HMMMM, The New Coca~Cola Blak.
I betting Coke is going to flunk this taste-test! Maybe they wont. But history has a tendency to reapeat itself...remember Pepsi Kona? The bottle is appealing to the eye, it begs you to try it. At first the taste is "un-expected", because to me, you weren't expecting it to taste as good as it does. As for the majority, it's another fad, something for the moment. I don't think they'll buy into it. And when they don't... I have cases and cases of the stuff! But you just can't beat the REAL THING...Good ol' regular Coca~Cola, in glass bottles of course!

coke blak is merely the commodification of the coffehouse staple, the 'electric chair'...2 shots of espresso dropped carbomb style into an icy coke and drunk fast.

tried it this morning and realized that icy cold is the key to this drink, and it does seem that coke really means this as its entry into the energy drink elixir-style beverage market and not the refreshing soda-style beverage market.

so drink fast!

Blak is great. Or I think so at least. I'm about to go see if I can find a four pack at Walmart or something.

Oh and the "suicide" mix drink thing... When I was in little league baseball all the kids drank "Dynamite" which I believe was just a mix of Coke, DP, Sprite and Red (red being cherry coke or fruit punch etc). The "Red" taste should usually come across pretty strong along with the DP.

And I made a coffee energy drink a few months ago. I bought a red bull, poured it over two shots espresso and put it over ice. Voila! "Radioactive Sunrise"
