04/06/2006 Entry: "Sea My Monkeys."

I think the real question is, "How many hours can I waste at work each day staring at my amazing live Sea-Monkeys?"

I love them, I really do. The "Sea-Monkeys On Mars" kit has been sitting on my shelf unopened since my first week on the job almost two years ago, but certain recent bouts of ennui and dementia and something-something forced my hands under the seal, and next thing I knew, bam, Sea-Monkeys on the desk. I won't bore you with the specific details on how it works or how they hatch or how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tiny packets full of eggs, food and miracle plasma, but suffice to say, it's been over a week since they hatched and over a week since I fell in love with a monkey named Sea.

The tiny shrimp are fascinating creatures; they're small, but with remarkable pronounced features like black dot eyes, constantly fanning backs and tails just long enough to make you think you own more Sea-Monkeys than you actually do. And they're constantly moving. Not just boring, "whirl around the tank" movements, either; their paths are totally erratic and totally awesome, and as they seem to grow in size and numbers by the day, I feel okay about selling my television and reserving Family Night Entertainment for the up-and-coming Sea-Monkey Show.

Best of all, I don't have to feel guilty about them being in the office; they'll actually flourish better here than they would at home. See, Sea-Monkeys love light. Loooove it. And they get plenty of it here, as opposed to home, where we tack blankets up over the windows and read alchemy books by candlelight. While they do require some attention otherwise (feeding 'em, keeping their water oxygenated, etc.), you'd have to be a fucking idiot to screw up a Sea-Monkey. They don't ask for much. Just a little food, some water and light, and a blog post written on company time. Take that, The Man.

I think I need to go get me some sea monkeys.........I had some when I was young and thought they were pretty cool.

I just hope your sea monkeys don't break up into their own little factions, eventually leading to a nuclear Armageddon when one of the sea monkeys accidentally presses the launch button while getting laid.

Sea monkeys are the true dominant species on our planet. The humans are just an interesting project. See, they wanted plastic castles to live in, but didn't want to go through all the bother of evolving opposable thumbs, as that would get in the way of their years-long meditations on metaphysics. The really enlightened ones manipulate the climate so that they can retire to tiny brine-filled pits under rocks in deserts. It's true because you read it on the internet.

No, but I remember the Sea Monkies skit from The State.

I love Sea-Monkeys, always have. Bannana treats, living plasma.. there is just something fun about being a God and creating life from little sugar packets.

Here's a tip, while Sea-Monkeys love light and will follow a laser pointer around their aquarium, it will blind them, but it's impossible to tell since they don't go anywhere specific anyway.

Chestnuts roasted by thefuzzyhulk @ 04/06/2006 07:29 PM EST

Hmm, "melancholia" perhaps? That and "despondency" are my fav ways to describe crap feeling with laser accuracy.
psyK, I most definitely remember it. I was just asking a friend if they remembered it recently and of course got the "wtf" blank stare.

See, I've been waiting for this - doing little chants and spells before bed each night, hoping Matt would do the Seamonkey article soon after he mentioned he had some. Damn, I didn't think it would happen so soon. big grin

Well, they've been warning us for a month now...

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 04/06/2006 11:03 PM EST

I had this kit once where I put these little pebbles into a small aquarium and it will look in a few days like there are a bunch of glaciers underwater, and there is usually a shipwreck on the bottom of the tank. That was neat.

Chestnuts roasted by mjf7583 @ 04/06/2006 11:37 PM EST

Jedoc:
An interesting theory, but faulty, nonetheless. Sea Monkeys are actually a very special type of shrimp that were purposely bred by humans. Humans are good people, though; we may let other humans starve and wage pointless war, but we can all take solace in knowing that when we create creatures that the sea never intended we at least have the decency to provide them with itty-bitty plastic castles.

Take some time out of your day to hug a human and let them know you care.

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 04/07/2006 12:50 AM EST

Hey Matt,

Glad you finally got Sea Monkeys to work (I remember the earlier attempt).

Now you need to go get yourself a Triops kit. Same basic idea, but the shrimp-y things are bigger. They sell them as "creatures from the time of dinosaurs" and they are weird things that look like they have too many eyes. Oh yeah, and as they grow, they eat each other until there is only one to live out the rest of its days. Like Immortals from Highlander.

Chestnuts roasted by Sean (of the fish) @ 04/07/2006 12:55 AM EST

Sorry Touji, but Sea Monkeys are about as special a breed as farmed ostriches. They're just brine shrimp. They didn't need people, they don't need people, and they'll be around long after we've burned the crops and salted the earth (what with liking salty water and all).
But they are easy to captive rear and handy for feeding your tropical fish.

Chestnuts roasted by Sean (the fish one--again) @ 04/07/2006 12:58 AM EST

Nice! With every post your job just seems sweeter and sweeter. You get to hang in hotels with bleeding monster eyes, film giant orange presents, chug turkey flavored sodas at night with coworkers, and hit toys r us on a daily. I'd work there so hard if I could.

I had Sea Monkeys when I was little. My dad got them for us and he was so jazzed about it. I don't remember really paying attention to them after we "planted" them. Maybe I'll get some for my son. He wants a pet.

Did anyone ever have those magic growing crystals? Not Sea Monkeys but they were put into water and the package claimed they would grow into huge (surely toxic) multicolored mountains... what were they called and could you ever get them to work? Mine lasted all of a day or so and turned into sludge...

Chestnuts roasted by rockasoo @ 04/07/2006 08:43 AM EST

I had a magic crystal kit. I screwed up the directions and ended up with a mason jar of cloudy water. I cried. My mom had to cook spaghetti just to bring me back from the brink of total despair. But at least I learned a valuable lesson about following directions. Man, has it really been two weeks? The pain is so fresh it feels like yesterday.

Chestnuts roasted by Lou @ 04/07/2006 09:08 AM EST

My childhood was deprived of Sea Monkeys for reasons I can only assume stem back to some disheartening experience my folks had with them in their youth. I begged and pleaded for the stupid things for years until I finally didn't care anymore, only to always get the same "Those things are a ripoff, they're just stupid little bug things that you can barely see, you don't need any" type response. I feel this lack of Monkeys in my life is probably why I turned out the way I did.

On the other hand, I did have those Magic Crystals things. I remember mine did work, but I don't remember what became of them. I think I probably took them out of the jar to use as backdrops for He-Man battles or something and broke them. Stupid Magic Crystals. I bet Sea Monkeys would have thrived forever in Eternia, though.

Chestnuts roasted by lugnut @ 04/07/2006 09:24 AM EST

Dear mjf7583 and rockasoo,

They were called Magic Rocks, and you can still buy them... in fact I ran into a package at the Smithsonian Museum a couple months ago. They were so awesome in theory, but never really worked that well, and they did fall apart in a matter of days. I wish I had some right now, though.

Here they are.

Strangely enough, I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Not like I'd really do it or anything, but I'm just thinking about how I wouldn't be all that grossed out by drinking the Sea-Monkey soup. I have no idea why. Maybe I'm thirsty/hungry.

On the topic of eating Sea Monkeys, most kimchi (korean cabbage sidedish) has some sort of fish extract or brine shrimp mixed in with it to move the fermentation along. So if you've eaten kimchi, you've probably eaten Sea Monkeys!

On a better note, I had magic growing crystals when I was little, and guess what? I STILL have them! big grin Yes, the same exact jar with the same crystals in it. I don't really know where it is at the moment, but I know it's around here somewhere. It's more than 20 years old.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 04/07/2006 12:18 PM EST

Seeing how I'm 20, and young enough that Rugrats episodes had a significant impact on my childhood, I have a feeling that's why I didn't have any Sea Monkeys. I knew what they were, and I just never saw the appeal. The fact that I had a large number of actual mammalian pets probably had something to do with it too.

Chestnuts roasted by jazzy @ 04/07/2006 12:34 PM EST

More exciting then the fish we have here at work. By the way, Matt, my sister and I were watching the last half of Troll 2 last night on cable (just happened upon it) and the first thing my sister said was Matt has to do a review of this with the animated stills...If horrible "trolls" with rubber masks and growling like a pride of lions and a boy trying to destroy them with a bologna sandwich isn't X-E material I don't know what is!!

Holy crap, I remember Sea Monkeys. I was never successful in ever really getting the things to grow. Thank god it's payday, ("I want my $2!"wink because now I have a newer higher purpose in life - breeding brine shrimp and having a damn fun time doing it too. So, I know exactly where the hell I'M going this afternoon after getting out of "work". The Sea Monkey is mine! Look out LeChuck!

Chestnuts roasted by Tim @ 04/07/2006 01:25 PM EST

(It took me 3 times to even spell my name right. Oh boy... what a day.)

TRU sells the sea monkies. They have Sea Monkies on the Moon, at The Beach, and in The City. They come in little containers that aren't near as huge as Matt's is. It's more of an octagonal 3-4 inch high thing with a snap on lid. The cool thing is that they have various "magnifying" spots where you can see your monkies of the sea up close. They are 10 bucks a pop.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 04/07/2006 03:32 PM EST

Just curious, I don't recall the sea monkey show with Howie Mandel. When did it air on TV? I wonder if he still had hair.

At least NBC is playing it safe and airing Deal or No Deal only twice a week. That's more sensible than what ABC tried with the Millionaire show by overkilling it six nights a week.

The Sea Monkey show was (correct me if I'm wrong) on CBS somewhere in the range of 89-92. I didn't remember Howie Mandel being in it, but then, I never really watched it either.

I'm tired of the term "Kong Sized" anyone else? maybe i just watch too much tv...So John Lovitz is in a Subway commercial and Bench Warmers at the moment. Kinda sad...he was much better suited as a SNL member because he could play a good variety of characters. Yes I know he had dollar signs in his eyes when he left but what SNL cast members really have been THAT successful? I'd say Sandler has made some stupid movies but he always finds a way to put on a show. He has strayed away from yelling all the time and using that voice he uses when he sang those songs on SNL in the early 90's. Bill Murray has lasted playing essentially the same character in almost all of his movies (his most recent movie are an exception). I mean its crazy that Bill Murray wins an oscar and Jamie Foxx from In Living Color won the best actor oscar. He did a great job in Ray so don't think I'm taking that away from him, but when i look at him I think of the character WandA

Oh man....i *love* Sea Monkeys! I've had about 4 seperate tanks over my lifetime. Two tanks ago lasted about a year. I had generation spawn another generation etc. They'd just die and form a unsightly build-up of carcasses...but those suckers *thrived*! I was sad to see only one remaining after so long.
The last tank I had had an unfortunate demise. I was moving apartments and thought...yeah, the Sea Monkeys will do just fine on the seat next to me in the car. Well, they didn't. I Sea Monkey water and squirming little shrimps everywhere. Please, for the sake of Sea Monkeys everywhere....put them in one spot and let them remain there.

Oh yeah, I remember that Growing Crystals thing. My Uncle got one for both my brother and I each. I remember it having the decor of a polluted sea (i.e. tire, grimy sea floor, ugly fish, all made of molded plastic of course). As further decoration, you had a little fisherman sitting on a dock that you could attach along one of the top edges. Basically, you just added this toxic chemical to the water.

Well, both of ours worked (thanks to the help of our Mom), but my brother, being the curiuosly destructive little bastard that he was, decided to see what would happen if he were to break the grown chutes of the crystals in his tank. They didn't grow back. And so in an upset rage, my brother fucked up my tank as well.

My brother has always had a reputation for wrecking stuff, which is why I stil won't let him play with my NES.

Whoah that sounds really freaking gross. I don't even like coffee, so I'm not too pumped to beging with. I pretty much bought it because I thought it was an energy drink, but then realized it's more of a flavor thing. Thanks for the heads up. It's almost cold so soon I can share in your pain.

Yeah, it's gross. Another way I could describe it is like if you took coffee-flavored jelly beans, and mashed them up into your diet coke. That's pretty accurate (and awful) I think.

OK just drank it. It wasn't as bad as I had hoped/feared. As you said, Mr. Boligarky, it tastes like coffee-flavored jelly beans. If you ate like 4 coffee jelly bellies and 6 Dr. Pepper jelly bellies at the same time you'd essentially recreate the flavor. I think I'll stick to Monster energy for my caffeine fix. I kind of want to try this Coke Black stuff, but I've been busy dying for the last week. Not literally (sorry to disappoint you) but I've been super sick. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to smoke another cigarrette- even the thought of one kind of makes me nauseuous now, and I've been a smoker for ten years. It's been over a week now, and I don't have any cravings. Also, I think I've lost a bunch of weight, since I have barely eaten for a week and my clothes fit looser.

As a way of getting healthy, being sick is not recommended, but I think I'm going to end up in better shape than before once I finally feel better. Now if I could just eat something more than a fruit cup.

Wow spaz good on ya for the break from smoking! Keep it up, you've already come so far, you can totally see it through!
What I think I hate most about being a filfy smoka is being sick and knowing full well that smoking will just make it worse and last even longer but you do it anyway because you're a slave to a tube of paper stuffed with poisons that will eventually do you a lot worse than the little case of the sniffles you're currently whinging about. Maybe that's just me though.

squee-

I certainly don't intend to be one of those ex-smokers who looks down their nose at those "filthy smokers". Heck, I'm still not sure if I'll be able to stick with this once I feel good. I know that I'm going to be sitting on the front porch some spring/summer evening and the urge is going to finally hit- bad. I think if I can get through an evening of reading outside with a beer in one hand without smoking, that will be the absolute toughest challenge. There's just something about the combo of languid breezes, a good book, a brew, and a cigarrette or pipe.

I will admit to feeling annoyed when I had to walk past someone at a local fast food place who was on his smoke break. Maybe this is a good sign.

Heh, I've been doing the same thing, Josh. I'm like 90% sure Matt's not going to do an article this weekend, but I keep thinking, "Well maybe he'll do a Kool-Aid or cereal thing..." I guess I just need a distraction from the all the scanning and encoding and photographing and writing and everything I've been doing. ^_^

For the record, I tried the Berries and Cream Dr. Pepper. It reminded me of those swirly life saver candies..oh, yeah Creme Savers. I would probably drink it again, if I went to the store and said, "Hey I think I want to drink Creme Savers." But I would not drink it if I actually wanted Dr. Pepper.

As for Coke "Blak", I haven't tasted it and I don't plan to. And they put a line over the "a" which means "long a sound" so it technically should be pronounced like "blake", but it's obviously supposed to be like "black". What were they thinking? I don't know why that really annoys me.

Mystie, JoshC, me too. Maybe we'll get lucky and Matt will give us a Sunday night thread. Won't be Saturday, but I've got nothing important to do tonight. Well, other than writing an article for my site, but the Hostess cakes are starting to make me sick.

There've been a number of Sunday article posts. And Sopranos ends soon, so there's always hope wink

Lulu, I thought the same thing about "Blak"! My coworkers didnh't get it at all. Idiots.

And since I don't drink soda or smoke, I have nothing to add.

I used to have Sea Monkeys on my desk too. Loved them!

Be sure no one tries to turn them upside down. People tend to think they work like a snow globe. =(

I almost forgot: If your sea monkeys happen to die, I'm pretty sure you can stir up the water and they will come back to life. (If I remember correctly) Have fun!
