Anybody have any random memories in their heads from childhood that they just can't place? I'm not talking about weird uncles telling you, "It's a secret" either, but lines from a tv show or commercial that creeps into you concious every now and then? A (poor) example would be "Lookie, lookie, I've got wookie." It's poor because I know where it's from. Some Star Wars toy commercial. I don't know how or why, but it pops in my head now and then.
Anyone else?

Haha! I found one last M!
On a side note...I really love the White Stripes so I was checking out The Raconteurs, and their video has Jack White in some cowboy shirt, the dudes from the Greenhornes looking quirky or whatever, and Brendan Benson wearing...a top hat?
Does that seem right to you?

Matt:
Have you ever tried mixing a packet of strawberry koolaid with one of the Invisible Raspberry packets? I can't gather the courage to try it, but since I read the review of Incrediberry, I have wanted to experience the raspberry/strawberry koolaid combo SOMEHOW. just wondering if in your koolaid ventures you have ever tried this possibly heavenly or possibly lethal mix.

I saw George Carlin do his stand-up in person last night. Pretty hilarious shit. It's amazing to me that he's still able to do what he does at the age of seventy. Unreal. Even more amazing is the fact that he claimed to be fifteen months sober at last night's show. Not that there's anything wrong with getting sober, but do you really need to bother when you've reached that age? Fuck it...enjoy the last few humiliating years of your life in a substance-induced haze.
Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 03/25/2006 09:22 PM EST
Fine. You guys want frills? Then let's take the power back. Impromptu survey. Does anyone else remember the first article you read at XE? For me, the party started with the Supergirl movie review way back in the summer of '03. I don't remember exactly how I found the site, but I was taking some classes in Oxford and the computer room was the only place in the house with air conditioning, and there was a God-awful heatwave going on. So I ended up reading every article archived on the front page while hiding from the heat. Good times.

Mine was the 1st part of the Spidey's Crayon Review Triology! A friend randomly sent it to me - said he found it when he was looking up monchichi's ... or however you spell it.

I honestly don't remember! I know that I ended up here beacause of the 80's commercials. Since I was looking at them during the slow times at work, it took me a while to play through all of them, and then I started snooping around the site. Once I read one article, I started reading just about everything I could find. I'm thinking that my first one was one of the book reviews.
Chestnuts roasted by Lori @ 03/25/2006 09:38 PM EST
Well, the 80's commercial page was the first thing I found on X-E. I then proceeded to explore ever inch of the site. Good times.
Chestnuts roasted by Double G @ 03/25/2006 09:38 PM EST
First Article I read was the one where Matt wears the Ultimate Warrior Wrestling Gear Set. I remember saying to myself "I can't believe that 14 year old is smoking a cigarette." I can't believe how young we looked.
Just for the record, before anyone goes off thinking I super old school, while the article was new at the time, I wasn't regular yet. In fact, I didn't find this site again for several years.
Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 03/25/2006 09:52 PM EST
I don't recall the first article I read, all I remember is that I read a dozen or so articles that I found through link sites before I started checking the site regularly.
On an unrelated note, there is at least one other "Jeff" that posts comments, so to differentiate myself from him, my homepage will forever more be set to www.playervsfish.com. I've owned the domain for a while, but only recently put a page up, which is why I haven't set it as my homepage in previous posts.
If you find yourself as to whether a comment posted in the past was me, it is a safe bet to assume that if the "Jeff" in question sounded like a pretty cool guy, it was me.
Chestnuts roasted by Jeff @ 03/25/2006 09:56 PM EST
I assume M.U.S.C.L.E. or Battle Beast somehow lured me here but Photog keeps me coming back forever. Also like dohopoki so you don't think I am old school it was well achieved when I read it.

I don’t remember the exact article, only that it was 2002 or 2003 and that it was a Christmas article. I just glanced over it and didn’t go back to X-E until around October 2004. Now look at me. I’m surfing the internet in only socks and a cape.

I don't remember the first article I read. I ended up here several times before I checked XE regularly. I do remember the first blog I read, it was about a year ago and it was when Matt got a pack of bacon bits from McDonalds. I remember thinking how awful it musta smelled. Other than emailing maybe once a week I never even went on the internet until about that time.
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 03/25/2006 10:28 PM EST
I was a big fan of www.seanbaby.com and ran Google searches for similar sites and "X-Entertainment: A Pop Culture Extravaganza" was always the top result. That tricksy "X" kept me away awhile thinking it was a NSFW kind of place but eventually I gave in and checked it out. I can't remember what the first article I read was, but I started scoping out the archive and that was that. I do remember I was checking daily for updates when the Rainbow Brite at the San Diego Zoo article was posted, and that was in October 2002. How the time does fly!
This is seriously the best site on the internet (no, seriously) and the best group of people here in the blog. Viva X-E.
Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 03/25/2006 10:30 PM EST
The first one I read was the one about TMNT Pudding Pies. A dude on a forum I used to post on had it linked in his sig.
Chestnuts roasted by Somethin' Funny @ 03/25/2006 10:43 PM EST
OK, I've been thinking about the first question, the one about "do you have things stuck in your head and don't know where they came from". I honestly can't think of any. However, I have a problem of getting things stuck in my head and continuing to use them long after anyone remembers what I'm talking about. Example: There was a series of AT&T commercials many years back (this site being what it is, I anticipate many of you will remember) that had examples of things like, "Have you ever kissed your baby good-night from a thousand miles away? You will. And the company that will bring it to you? AT&T." Well, there was one that showed an example of distance learning and this kid asks his teacher (on a screen) a question about where jazz came from and the guy answered (in a very distinct way), "Good question." Well, I got in the habit of saying that phrase in that way, and once upon a time everyone got the humor. The problem is, I still say it that way, and now I get strange looks and I always have to explain it. Has that stopped me? No way.
Chestnuts roasted by Lori @ 03/25/2006 10:49 PM EST
I'm pretty sure my first article was also the Ultimate Warrior costume article. It was linked from Wrestlecrap. Only I found it about a couple of years ago and then preceeded to read every article still available.
Has anyone seen the commercial for the new TMNT PaleoPatrol figures? Basically, the turtles are now riding dinosaurs. Dumb.
Just got done watching Princess Mononoke on CN. Pretty good.
I watched the STUPIDEST "thriller/horror" movie on IFC last night called "Doppelganger" with Drew Barrymore hamming it up. Ugh. But it would make prefect XE fodder.

My first article was the Garfield's Halloween special one. I was in college and was talking to my friend about the special, he being the only other person who had a memory for that sort of thing. He showed me the article on x-e, and voila. A regular reader is born.
Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 03/25/2006 10:55 PM EST
oooh, Lori, I know what you mean.
There was this really stupid car dealer commercial on in Washington about ten years ago, and the basis of it was: buy a car, get a free cell phone. (It was ten years ago, and that was a big deal apparently) Anyways it showed this lady in her car on her new free cell and she mouths really clearly, "How ya doin' fine!" But she says it all as one sentence. As though she asked, got an answer and replied in one breath. Anyways, I always say that, and no one gets it.
I remember the "you will" commercial too.
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 03/25/2006 11:02 PM EST
My first X-E article was the MUSCLE Wrestling Ring Belt, found it on a search. Didnt come back for a while, but I believe it was the old 80's commercials articles that kept me coming back. Not the huge ones he does now but back when he did em one at a time, I believe the Polly-O Cheese Stick one was what got me hooked. Then I read the Cobras Chia Plot and I was in love.
Chestnuts roasted by James @ 03/25/2006 11:08 PM EST
I have another one. An old commercial for this tiny voice recorder that you can use for all sorts of handy things (like remembering where you parked):
(Lady with a thick Minnesotan accent into recorder):
"Blue Section. Row 15."
(then shot of her replaying and nodding happily that her voice recorder has now proven itself worthy.)
I say that (complete with accent) whenever we can't remember where we parked. No one knows what the heck I'm talking about.
Chestnuts roasted by Lori @ 03/25/2006 11:11 PM EST
First time poster. Figured I would finally speak up. I don't remember how I found it but the first thing I read on XE was the Nathan Bitner Blog. I honestly sat at my computer and read the entire thing all the way through. Been a huge fan ever since.

I remember mine: the article for Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue. I saw that on a tape I rented from a defunct video store many years ago and finally searched for it back around 2003 and stumbled across here and I've been hooked ever since. I can't believe someone else remembered it.
And even if this is no frills, I'm overdressed for it, me wearing a cowboy hat & a speed-o right now. It was a special day for all, especially for the tabloids.

Well, it was more of a two day marathon. As I recall, I found it somewhere around 3 a.m. on a Friday and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, then woke up and finished it off somewhere around midnight the following day. That blog is a novel all in itself.
Chestnuts roasted by Fishstix @ 03/25/2006 11:47 PM EST

Out of curiosity, am I the only person who is completely paranoid about refreshing the page after posting a comment out of fear of a double post? I always go back through the main page to check for new comments at least a dozen times before I get the balls to just click refresh.

I was told by a friend who stumbled onto this site to come here.
Actually, he didn't stumble. I told him about this toy I had where you tear it to shite and use this crane to lower it into a kinda crater hill of sliime. Couldn't remember what it was called, but I loved it. He's a bit older than I and couldn't remember anything like that existing.
Then one day he says. "You know that toy you always told me about that I thought you made up? Manglor mountain."
I couldn't belive it. He told me the site he found the info at. Here at "The '"X'"' I found a site -n- person who remembered all my favourite things from the 80's that everybody else I knew thought I made up.
So I read it all, and he's ruled ever since. Heh, manglor mountain. Mad Sci-n-tist, ect. Yep.
SO hey Matt, where's the Jacee and The Wheeled warriors article?

My random pop-into-my-head thing:
A long time ago one of the Wisconsin state parks was hosting this winter hike thing through a forest trail. It was a weird nighttime event, with the trails being lighted with empty cut-open gallon milk jugs filled with sand that had candles stuck in them, most of which had gone out. For some reason this became a whole extended family affair, with my aunt and uncle and two cousins coming along. Anyway, towards the end of the trail there was a refreshment table set up with volunteers hawking coffee and hot chocolate in the sub-zero temperatures. Apparently somebody thought this would also be a good place for a bake sale, judging from the large selection of donated baked goods. Walking past, I overheard a fellow hiker ask how much one of the treats cost. The woman manning the table, in a thick rural Wisconsin accent, replied, "Dese are twenty-five, and dose are fifty."
My uncle repeated this phrase enough times that to this day whenever I am asked the price of something, this pops into my head and sometimes comes out of my mouth.

I don't remember the first article I ever read on X-E, but I know it was something that dates back to when Matt was writing for WU. I've never been a big fan of wrestling, but I initially found WU after some sort of radio incident involving The Rock and the dude that ran the site.
The first article that I *do* remember was something about a Star Wars convention where Matt had all his Star Wars toys hanging out together. I remember that Lando was upside-down in his chair with the caption, "Colt 45!". For some reason, it really resonated with me at the time...

I can't remember what my very first X-E article was, but I know I arrived there through CollegeHumor.com hotlinks...I seem to remember Turtle Pies and Peeps being early contenders, or perhaps a Halloween countdown.
I'm glad I did, because through this site (and then through this blog), I found tons of good sites (Crown Combo, Retrocrush, Review the World, iMockery, Scary Crayon, among others) that hooked me in and phased out the relatively mediocre CollegeHumor.

yeah, gross. I drink a pot of coffee every morning and then wash it down with Coca-Cola all day. By now, I am sure these beverages are part of my blood chemical make-up. And I would NEVER ever have dreamed to mix the two. Not all good things get better when combined. We don't make ketchup and peanut butter sandwiches. We don't make red wine and chocolate milk cocktails. What is wrong with the good people at Coca-cola? And the countdown on the website has kind of an ominous countdown-to-destruction feel to it.
Aah, it feels good to rant before lunchtime. Thanks for sharing the link with us.

Ahhhh, XE came to me at a perfect time in my life- I was pulling an all-nighter, trying to finish a 10 page paper, when my friend sent me a link to something he thought I would enjoy- Matt's article where he BAKES AN ALF CAKE!
Now, I think this was in 2003...anyways, I have thanked this friend numerous times for giving me that link. After that, I always had Microsoft Word (and essays) open in one window, and XE open in another. It really made my last 2 years of university a lot easier. No, really!
Also, the Bitner Photog blog and the Hi-C controversy pretty much assured that I will be coming to XE for life.

I think I stumbled onto this site when I was searching on Transformers. The memory is vague, I'm pretty sure that it was 2001, for reasons too long and boring to list here.
While I'm certain the first articles I read had to do with Transformers and GI Joe, the first one that really stands out in my mind was one of Matt's E-Bay scams. In it, he convinced some nimrod to buy dirt, twigs, and rocks from his back yard. He called it a "mystical jar" or something like that.
To this day, when people start talking about how stupid the general public can be, I tell them about how easily people can be bamboozled on E-Bay, and then recommend the site.
P.S. Another early favorite was the "Green Bamboo Mystery Peanut."

I think my first article was the 10 worst transformers back in 01. I remember reading some of the older ones, like the Lan Lan one, or even the kinder Easter eggs, but I think that might have been going back thorugh some of the older articles., not on my first few visits. MAn, I got hooke don this site right away. I remember reading the deleted Star Wars scenes and went on a quest to find the Christmas special to check out Coked Up Carrie, but to no avail.
I wish I knew there was as forum at one point. Anyone here still remember it and what went down? I read on Wikipedia that it was a mess.
Funny story. I've worked at my company for about 6 years, and at one point, 3 years after my start date, they began to get tight about the firewalls and what sites people visited. I got a call one day from the one of the firewall admins letting me know that my name came up on one of their reports because I was visiting an "X" entertainment site. Meaning they thought it was porn. I was cool with him so he said he deleted that entry, but told me not to go there again since he couldn't keep doing that. I told him what the site was about, and when he checked it out, he mentioned I visit some strange sites.
From then on, I would only visit the site from home, which sucked, because for about 3 years, this place was my get away from work. Thank God my new job allows me to come here during work hours or I would need to club an innocent baby seal for entertainment.

I was looking up info on old ads, and TransFormers, and landed on the X. Right after that, I asked if anyone remembered the name of the marble-and-sliders game with the ad tagline "I'm the Sole Survivor!" That game was Stay Alive. Been a Regular ever since. And now a movie called "Stay Alive" is hitting the screens, and I wonder if the last one left will use the line.

I saw Grevious and Kenobi at Target but no Vader or Fett
They were smaller than I was picturing.
Sopranos was pretty cool...not as haunting as last week (with the exception of that incredible last scene with Tony B. and the trees) but the comic relief was a welcome respite after last week's sobfest. All we had last week was Jun's "Take your ultimatums and stick them in your ass!" but this week had plenty of levity...Vito going on a baby carrot binge slayed me, as did Paulie nearly irritating Tony to death.

During Christmas 2002, my brother sent me a link for "Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue." It was the most hilarious thing I'd ever read. I still think it is, honestly, but I assume that's because nothing can compare to my first impression. Ah, good times.
Hey, Matt, have you ever heard of Hidden Mickeys?* I feel that you would either have a BLAST looking for them or your woman will kill you. Either way, good times. I know there's Web sites where you can download lists of them.
*For those of you who don't know, those Disney Imagineers are tricky bastards and have hidden a bunch of Mickeys (basically, the large head circle and the two smaller ear circles) in a bunch of rides, decorations, shows, etc. They're so clever, those Disney people!

There's a hidden Mickey in TRON.
Disney Channel used to have a short info segment about the hidden ones in the parks. Any wrought-iron work is a good place to start. There's a mural with bubbles floating about with a couple in Mickey Formation. Remember, when in a Disney park, the graven image of Mickey Mouse is always nearby, watching you.

My favorite hidden Mickey is in the Maelstrom ride... in the big mural behind the ride loading area. Since the ride is in Epcot's "Norway", the mural has Vikings and fjords and stave churches and modern day fishermen and scientists and basically shows you that Norway is so fucking great you need to go there immediately. If you look close, one of the Vikings is wearing Mickey Mouse ears.

For a while, I was stuck using the library for internet access. Their "Netnanny" knockoff wouldn't let me visit x-entertainment, and informed me that if I persisted in trying to access inappropriate content, my privileges would be revoked.
I picked up the Lego A-Wing and Tie Interceptor on Saturday, and spent part of Sunday putting them together. They actually ended up looking halfway decent. I had so much fun I'm thinking about buying the 3100 piece Imperial Star Destroyer. It's expensive, but I think I might get my money's worth. Has anyone bought this set?

Spaz, I, in fact, own said LEGO Star Destroyer. I happen to be an avid LEGOmaniac from way back and that beast took me literally several days working on it for hours each day. The "wing" segments get a little repetitive, but on the whole it was a blast. And the feeling of pride when you complete it is rather substantial. My only complaint with the set is that the included Blockade Runner is about two inches long. I realize that it's to scale and that if you made the rebel ship bigger then the actual Star Destroyer would have to equal your house in size. (And the set is expensive enough as it is.) It's just a little thing that irks me.
But, yeah, cool set.

It's the courtyard in front of the Great Movie Ride at MGM Studios. That entire area is one huge Mickey head.

I loved Legos as a kid. I used to use them together with my Joe's and Transformers. They were the covert midget assassin group they used to do their...ahem..dirty work...
Who would expect yellow, happy faced little midgets to be trained in the deadly arts of Ninjitsu and Wu'Tang....? they made for awesome assassins.
They use to live in a town mixed of Lego houses and Construx monoliths.
I even made a movie with them, called Robot The Movie. Unfortunately, the T-Rex Construx that went haywire wiped out their once proud race....and smiling faces....

The first time i found this site, was when i accidentally came upon the page that has several 80's ads. I checked those out, then went about my business. A few months later, I was doing a Google search for Charlie Brown, and came upon the page where Matt recreated the Charlie Bropwn Thanksgiving Dinner. So I read that (and am determined to try doing that myself) after doing that, I clicked on the link to the homepage, and read some of the articles that was there (was 2nd or 3rd "chapter" in the Chia Plot...so u know how long I've been coming to the page) After reading those, I did a search for "Matt" to find all articles written by him...a few months later, I was all caught up...the rest as they say....is history!

I always divided my toys into their own little countries, excluding the rebels from star wars because they were rebels for Christ sakes! Try to keep up here people! My Lego’s had their own empire. I made giant mechs, jet fighters, tanks, you name it.
In 2002 I stopped buying Lego’s and slowly but surely the empire crumbled. Old vehicles and mini figures were now scraped to make new ones, the peasants revolted, it was civil war. My star wars Lego's stayed out of the fighting and went off on their own into the basement. The rest of the Lego’s soon followed but the fighting continued, only now the monarchy didn’t have the support of Cobra and the Galactic Empire as my action figures had remained in my room. Soon the peasants had formed their own government and a fully fledged military.
The forces loyal to the monarchy were far outnumbered and soon betrayed the monarchy. Soon it was complete anarchy. My medieval Lego’s went off on there own and the military left the citizens to fight amongst themselves. Now the star wars, medieval, and the futuristic military Lego’s have all claimed that they are individual states. The civilian Lego’s were able to get their act together for a time but their government was quickly corrupted. Now their would-be president is asking my Gi Joes for political asylum though he will most likely be denied.
May god have mercy on them.

The first time I came across x-e was during a period of intense nostalgic feelings (go figure) so I did a Google search to see if He-man and She-ra's Secret of the Sword was being released on DVD. This was around last June, so the good news hadn't been released yet. Anyway, one of the searches linked me to Matt's Secret of the Sword review. I honestly laughed until my throat was raw. If anyone here has not read the review, please, for the love of all that is good, do yourself a favor and do so. Do, however, make sure you have quick access to bathroom facilities, as the review may cause you to lose control of all bodily functions. I don't want to hype it up too much, but it is that funny.

Cripes, I can't recall. I think I started coming here . . .7 years ago. Something like that. Nostalgia for days I can barely remember drew me in. And bright colors.
I clearly remember the Nads article because it was my favorite and I was always strangely fascinated by the infomercial.
However, I think close behind that one in fondness were all the Chick comics articles (that were later pulled for legal reasons?) because they were already so ridiculous anyway.

I still firmly believe--in the face of abundant evidence to the contrary--that the coolest legos ever made were the ones we used to play with at my grandma's house. They had belonged to my dad and his nine siblings, and they were 1970s era "space legos." You just don't get predominantly blue and grey color schemes in legos these days. We spent days trying to build Star Wars vehicles, even though we had the combined engineering expertise of a garden slug. Mostly, we ended up with lopsided monstrosities which only resembled spaceships because we held them up while saying "This is a spaceship, k?" And then we would slide them across the linoleum floor until they hit the crack under the door and exploded. Best toy ever.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who never really cared about Legos. Probably because I could never build anything that looked like anything. My Lego projects were usually limited to stacking a bunch together to make a "brick wall," so I could run my Hot Wheels into it, or so that He-Man couldn't get to Skeletor. Because he was on the other side of the wall, see.

Jedoc, I grew up with the kind of blue and gray "space" Legos you describe. However, I was born in 1977 and I don't think that the toys I played with could be called "70s era." Perhaps the style lasted into the 80s, or you're mistaken about the age of the bricks. Actually, I think my mom still has them somewhere. She usually drags them out when young kids come over.
One of the last sets I got (up until last weekend anyway) was probably the coolest one. It was an entirely black set of space Legos. The blue and grey Legos didn't stand a chance.
I need to stage a royal rumble to decide who commands my toy collection. My Masterpiece Optimus Prime is the wussy American version, so I don't think he'd win. The other incarnations of Prime (vintage G1, re-release G1, Powermaster, RID, Energon, Armada and BM) just don't have the size or heft. Fortress Maximus or Scorponok might win on sheer size, but I think my squadron of Veritechs (the first 5 masterpieces and Jetfire) might cheat and work together.

Does anyone else find it annoying when your parents let their young visitors play with your old toys? Of course, I was an only child, so I never did learn to share very well. When I was a kid (about 6) my parents gave away our jungle gym. It was one of those dome ones made with triangle shapes. They gave it to my mom's friend's kid. I was SO MAD. It wasn't even as though we (me and my sisters) didn't play on it, cause we did. And in the winter we'd throw old sheets on it and then pile snow on it and make an igloo. It was the coolest yard toy ever.
