Those Super Naturals look really sweet! More toys/cartoons need to use holograms. Remember how cool the Visionaries toys were?

You're updating regularly. Are you feeling quite alright?
Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 03/19/2006 08:29 PM EST
Unfortunantly, I don't remember the SuperNaturals. Sure wish I did, because they do look pretty darn sweet. Most of the other ads at least ring bells. We also frequently rented "The Secret of the Sword," as my sisters and I were HUGE She-Ra fans; it was one of our favorites from the (long defunct) Harber View Video in Cape May.
I don't remember the ad for the Fruity Rice Krispies cereal, but I do remember the cereal. I hate marshmallows in cereal and I hate Rice Krispies, so I wouldn't touch this one with a 100 foot pole...but at least the ad is way too cute for words.
I think I vaguely remember that Reeces ad, too. I don't remember if we ever had Underoos; that vogue may have passed by the time we were old enough for them, or maybe we couldn't afford them.

If I was that dude trying to eat a McDLT and my assjerk friends started clapping instead of helping me create a single unit of dining pleasure I would probably break their arms too. Cocky little fully functioning human being jerk faces. Also I wish they made underoos that fit me.

I have beed hoping ever since I found this site that you might review the Fruity Marshmellow Crispy commercial. Not that it's good, but whatever reason, it's one that me and several of my friends seem to remember the song and motions to-20 years later.
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 03/19/2006 08:47 PM EST
Ahh...
I remember those underoo's, I'm a child of the early 90's, and I had a pair of Superman ones. I even think there might have been a cape thrown in there too...I used to run from my bed to my parents bed to my brothers crib and then back.
I don't think I've seen them more recently, though they probably have Hulk and Wolverine ones =\

Holy shit! Super Naturals! Nice, Matt. Once again, you make me long for high speed internet...damn this awful dial-up.
In high school I used to buy the Underoos for the t-shirts that used to come with them. It was the only way I could get t-shirts of Superman, Batman, etc. NOW they make awesome t-shirts everywhere. But back then, cool t-shirts were scarce.

Not to sound homophobic or anything, but I found it slightly amusing in the Fruity Marshmallow Crispies commercial when the girl exclaims "how fruity" and then shows that kid in the yellow sweater looking rather, well, fruity.

I am pretty sure they still make underroos. I swear I've seen them at TRU, in the apparel section, of course.
I used to have Wonder Woman underroos. God I loved those things. I wanted to be her - and I even made wrist cuff thingies like hers out of wrapping paper tubes.

In fact, here's ME- I am sorry that I don't have any computer skills and don't know how to post a link for real. I just took a sudden notion to show my fellow XE-ers a little bit more me. Glad I stopped by. Didn't expect to see X-E greatness. I don't say this too often on here but I HAD TOTALLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT ONE. In this case, the Super-Naturals. Wow!! I never had them but I do remember wanting them really bad.
I think that the Fruity Rice Krispies ad can be appreciated a bit more by those who lived through the age. For those who are too young, there was a huge "Island lifestyle" fad in the 80's. Everything from Billy Ocean to COCKTAIL to FRUIT ISLANDS CEREAL. This commercial is a good example of this mania.
Finally, yes, I saw SECRET OF THE SWORD in the theater but, for whatever reason, I cannot remember anything about it. I remember more about the CARE BEARS MOVIE and the HEATHCLIFF MOVIE (??) which is both shocking and sad.
Nice GREMLINS reference on THE SIMPSONS tonight.
P.S. showing the kid pull up the TRANSFORMER drawers was never a good idea...
Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 03/19/2006 09:39 PM EST
Matt- regarding the way He-man acted all into She-ra making you think they'd been originally written to be lovers... you're actually half right. The writers and designers behind the She-ra Toyline had her originally positioned to be He-man's LOVE INTEREST. The animation studio had to call a time out on that and inform the toymakers that they'd been working on a romantic sub-plot between He-man and Teela that they didn't want fucked with. So rather than go for a love triangle, She-ra was changed to be He-man's sister.

The McDLT...of course. And McDonald's still suffers from this freshness problem. Burger King too to a lesser extent. Y'know, they could just be like Wendy's and make things fresh. Makes a heckuva difference. Instead of bizarre clunky packaging. I like the 80s, but ideas like that just make it look like it was the stone age for crying out loud.

Hey Matt...if you ever get a chance to come to the southeastern PA area, you definitely have to check out a place called Zern's Farmers Market in Boyertown, PA (Berks Co.).
www.zerns.com
I was there recently and found, among other items...
--Diet pepsi "Uh huh!" cups
--California raisin figurines
--Tiny Toons figurines
--Dick Tracy action figures
--TMNT action figures of, among others, the Rat King, Usagi Yojimbo, Bebop, Rocksteady
--"Dinosaurs!" action figures
--TWO stores selling HORDES of old 8-bit NES games...old 8-bit NES systems...and Atari!!!
Definitely column-worthy

Matt: I hope you answer this....can you please tell me what compression program you used for these ads? They look very clean and yet they loaded very fast (except for the Secret of the Sword trailer). What did you use this time?
Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 03/20/2006 02:02 AM EST
I don't remember the DJ-Kat show, but I remember a million shows like it.
I wonder if he was local to your area. Fox always has a "local Kids Show host" for every area. I know that because my cable company had both my areas version of Fox (where a clown named Pete McTee hosted the cartoons) and the Baltimore MD version of Fox (where a 20-something guy in a clubhouse full of puppets hosted the cartoons).
Anyway, is there any chance that we'll see Mac Tonight in a download for this site? I miss Mac Tonight.
Also, if you're ever in central PA you must check out "The Old Sled Works", it's an antique/junk store just a couple houses down from my house. I just bought a tape of the Transformers movie a couple days ago, and the weird stuff there includes...
-A Charlie's Angels board game
-A Welcome Back Kotter puzzle
-A Farmer Donatello TMNT figure (with tractor)
-An Earl Sinclair action figure
That's all I can think of off-hand.

Zern's is like the motherfucking holy lands. I'm usually there every other weekend which works out perfectly as I have off every other Saturday. Unfortunately I agreed to swap days with a girl at work so she can go to her friend's birthday party so I won't get to hit the place up til April 8. But at least it'll give Larry's Hardware time to get some new stuff in for me. They don't know me by name but I'm sure if you mention "The weird X-Entertainment girl," they'll know who you're referring to.
But yeah, maybe by the time it gets warmer out it'll bring in some new vendors. Did you get to hit up the action figure stand run by the deaf lady? They have a ton of cool dinos and Ghostbusters.
If anyone ever wants to hang out and look for expired cereal with me at Zern's, don't be a stranger.

Did anybody else feel really sorry for the McDLT kid? I mean, he's hanging out with these complete assholes who use every spare breath to mock and verbally abuse him, and he just grins and buries his seething anger deep inside. Why? What unfortunate series of life choices has led him to be the bitch of a group which obviously keeps him around for their own vicious entertainment? And it's obvious that somebody busted that arm for him. He can't even get his story straight. "I...I fell down some stairs." In fact, based on repeated viewings, I can only conclude that one or all of his "friends" inflicted the injury, either by daring him to do something willfully dangerous or just throwing an old-fashioned blanket party, and they're gloating over the fact that he'll never reveal the dark truth. The most likely outcome of all this is a rage-fueled schoolyard massacre. "All I wanted was to eat my trendy damn sandwich, you twats! Now you can just eat lead!"
Here's to you, flannel-wearing tormented 80s teen. Hope your meds are working okay.

The Sopranos - Last night's episode I'm sure could be viewed as almost jumping the shark. I don't want to give anything away here, but we've seen the same kind of storyline in other (lesser) tv series. I guess it should be no surprise that it was directed by a former X-Files director.
That said, great episode. I think they crammed a full seasons worth of character development into on 53 minute episode. They've just set up the rest of the series. Good stuff.
Anybody else hoping that Meadow takes over the family business? That would just be so kick ass.

Where to begin? First of all, God bless you, Matt, for the Fruity Marshmallow Krispies. That jingle has been running through my head for 20 years with big holes in it that I thought I never had hopes of filling. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Your comments about the McDLT made me laugh because I remember a very specific incident from my childhood. We didn't live near a McDonald's (hard to believe, I know) and one night, on the way to Grandma's, we stopped at a McDonald's to get some food since we were going to get there way after dinner time. Mom and Dad both got McDLTs and I BEGGED for one. In my little five-year-old mind, this was more than a burger, it was an experience. I needed it. Alas, because of my youth my requests were denied and I was heartbroken. Apparently I was REALLY heartbroken since I'm going on 27 and I can still remember the night like it was last week. I remember a similar incident with the Wendy's Big Classic that came in a styrofoam dome that I had to get my hands on. No dice.
As for Underoos, I had Barbie and, most disturbingly, Daisy Duke. The panties were made to look like little jean shorts. I may have had others, but those are the only ones I remember. Incidentally, I found my Barbie Underoos at the bottom of a box the other day. On one hand, the sentimentality is huge, on the other, ewww....old underwear...

Here's a bigger question about the McDLT ad. The guy with the broken arm is obviously a jock and is older. So why is hanging out with younger nerds?
My grandparents had the lion Supernatural figure at their house so that's how I one of the few to actually remember them.
We had the FOX Kids Club in our area hosted by a magician and later a pretty girl. They had the a regular thing called "Word of the Day" where if you submitted a word, you got a toy. I submitted "stethoscope" (I was in second grade I think) and was picked, but don't remember what I won. I just found it exciting that my name was said on tv.
Also never got into Sopranos. HBO is hit/miss with me. Loved OZ, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Tracy Takes On, Larry Sanders, Dennis Miller, Tales From the Crypt, and Deadwood. Pretty much didn't give a hoot about anything not listed.

Sorry for being so late in commenting on this, but the Manimal mentioned Fruit Islands cereal. FINALLY, someone else remembers it! I was almost starting to believe it was a hallucination brought on by some other fruity goodness out there, but now I know this is not true. Thank you for saving my sanity Manimal. Also, if I remember correctly, there was a commercial for the cereal in which the king (I don't remember his name) was lost out in the ocean in a boat. There was a contest running to help him find his way home. I believe that the cereal was yanked out of production before the contest ended; therefore, I am forced to assume that the good king suffered a horrible, scurvy-filled death on the open seas. Can anyone confirm if this contest did indeed happen and that the cereal ended its run before the conclusion of the contest? I need your help!
Chestnuts roasted by Bludge @ 03/20/2006 04:39 PM EST
Sadly I have zero recollection of the cereal/contest of which you speak. However, if it were a King lost at sea, I would strongly suspect that his ultimate fate involved pirates. Especially if he's on TV telling everybody about his situation. Maybe the cereal was pulled because they had to pay a ransom and just couldn't afford to produce it anymore. Tragic. Oh well. Maybe after that the Fruity Islands themselves held free elections and became democratic republics.
But I ramble. Yeah, but definitely pirates.
Silly fruit boat king...

I had stormtrooper and Boba Fett underoos. I remember in kindergarten we had bragging rights if we happened to be wearing the coolest underoos that day. God, kids are weird.
Tetsu Deinonychus and others, you reminded me of my own local Fox afternoon cartoon host- Major Astro! I think he was just in the Wichita, KS area, but I could be wrong. He wore a space suit (which, if I remember correctly, was pretty cool) but his set was basically the local studio control room. The TVs in the background would play random shots of stock footage from Space Shuttle space walks. I think they were supposed to be windows. I didn't really care about "Major Asshole" (as we called him) but his bit delayed the start of Transformers. This was great, because the school bus would always drop me off JUST in time to catch that show. Man, what a trip- I had totally forgotten about that guy.
Double G- I had a similar experience about six months ago. Me and some other guys from work were in the Canonsburg, PA area for some on-site testing, and nobody wanted to make breakfast, even though the company sprung for the rooms with kitchens since we were going to be in the area for a month. We went to McDonald's almost every day to snag coffee and McMuffins, until IT happened. I was in front and opened the door to the little foyer that leads into the restaraunt. An awful smell pretty much slapped me in the face. I stopped dead in my tracks, and the guy behind me bumped into me and pushed me forward some. Fortunately I was able to stop myself. Lying directly in the middle of the tiny foyer was the biggest turd I have seen in my entire life. It was as long as my forearm and a little bigger around as a d-cell battery. There was a trail of brown goo leading from this thing off into the restaraunt. No way this was an accident- some asshole did this deliberately. We stopped and stared for at least a few seconds. The worst part was the look of utter dejection on the face of the employee who was coming out from the restaraunt to clean it up. You've never seen anyone looks so sad and hopeless. We didn't even know what to say to the poor guy. We just turned around and left.
Whenever I start to bitch about my job too much, the ridiculous paperwork and the idiotic rules that we have to follow (something about public safety and environmental damage), someone reminds me that at least we're not picking up turds at McDonald's. That usually perks me right up.

So I just finished the new article...awesome as expected...the Underoos reminded me of the Johnson's Soothing Naturals lotion commercials I'm seeing everyday lately. One version is geared toward selling to parents, but the other is geared towards selling to adult women and they use the same baby footage. There's something unsettling about watching a woman step out of the shower intercut with reaction shots from various multiculti babies while the announcer points out the woman isn't wearing a towel. It's just too many kinds of wrong all smashed together.

One fast food ad that I remember very well is this ad for Little Caesar's where there were these muppetesque Caesar dolls playing to the tune of Wooly Bully and some kid skyrocketing into the air after getting his surprise prize. You had to say "prize prize" to get something there.
Much of my watching Saturday morning shows came from when I was around eight or nine years old in the late 80s/early 90s in Evansville, Indiana. There were these two kids (one boy and one girl) on the local Fox station that would make silly jokes and have little contests for the kids, including a Dick Tracy lightup watch. I tried so damn hard to win it and I couldn't get it done! I know that today's Fox stations would not have anything like that, thanks to the rise of syndicated programming and Fox having second rate anime knockoffs every Saturday morning.

I agree, Fox HAS gone downhill. I remember the glory days of coming home (from HIGH SCHOOL mind you- I AM a geek after all) and watching 'X-Men' (the GOOD one), 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' (the GOOD one), and 'Spiderman'...

I know this post is gonna be random, but I just have to ask. If no one knows the answer, that's cool too.
But I figured I probably have the best shot at asking you guys.
Does anyone remember an old children's book, sort of like Casper, but it really had nothing to do with him, or at least I don't think so. I remember having this book when I was little, and I even dressed up like him once for Halloween. He had a pointy little tuft on top of his head, and he would try to scare people but just couldn't, and was all depressed about it. I know it sounds like Casper, but I swear it was another ghost, and I SO have to remember his name. It's really driving me insane.

Hey did anyone else notice that the kid from the ROTJ sweepstakes commercial (exp. 1983) was the same kid in the Watch'n'Play contest? (exp. 1988) He must have found his niche early in life. I wonder if he still has the same haircut today.
Oh, and I have also been to Zern's a few times(it was mentioned above). Yes it is a strange and sometimes wonderful place. Sort of a mutant city/farmers market...you'd like it.
Chestnuts roasted by OnePizzaPoint @ 03/21/2006 03:48 AM EST
Ryane: I used to have a book that might match your description. It was just called "Little Ghost," and it involved a ghost who wasn't going to pass his scaring exam because he couldn't scare anyone. And so he decided to go to a nearby elementary school to try and scare some kids, but it turned out that it was Haloween and people kept mistaking him for either a decoration, a costume or, in one memorable scene, a hand towel. Anyway, he eventually ends up onstage in the middle of the school play and then Bill Murray jumps out of the wings and captures him in a writhing stream of protons. Okay, so maybe I don't remember exactly how it ended, but that's the way I would've written it. And I can't find any pictures of the dude, but he did indeed have a pointy little tuft on his head, and as far as I know his only name was Little Ghost. Hope that helps.

Jedoc - That sounds like a cute story! Well, minus the Bill Murray part.
Unfortunately, it wasn't either of those, but I did end up remembering his name about 2 minutes after I turned my computer off last night. His name was Georgie, and I must not have gotten the story right because I looked it up on Amazon, and the story I remember didn't jive with that book. Unless there were other books... I dunno. But I know it was him.
Thanks guys! I totally wanna order those books now.

The X should create it's own "I Love...." list before VH1 does another one. I nominate, "....Video Games" and "....Saturday Morning" for our own. Thus, in the name of Matt, X-Entertainment, String Cheese, Hermit Crabs, and Fossilzed Nougat, I hereby decree that we claim all rights to the above titles, and if they become VH1 shows, they owe Matt three times his weight in Lego bricks for each title. So it is written, so shall it be done.

I Love Saturday Morning would rock, or After School, whatever.
The best afternoons ever were when the Disney line-up used to come on. I don't remember the exact order, but it included:
The Gummi Bears
Talespin
Ducktales
Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers
and Darkwing Duck
Man it was the best! But I don't remember my area having any host.
Also, on Saturday mornings, I remember being really bummed out when Looney Tunes would come on, because I knew that was the last cartoon of the morning. Today's after school and saturday morning shows suck.

Tyrone Burton, went from being a co-host of the preteen hosted segments for the Fox 25 club, to becoming a regular on Robert Townsend's The Parent 'Hood sitcom. All this talk of McDonald's yesterday got me in the mood for some Mickey D's, so after work I'm headed down to the SI Ferry and I miss the 7:40pm boat so I walk over to the McDonald's on Water Street. I order nuggets and fries. The girl gives me the bag and I dash back towards the ferry terminal to make the next boat. I get on the ferry, go up to the top deck. (It was the new shiny fancy ferry... ooooh) and I sit down. Rummage through the bag and grab some fries while reading the latest issue of MK4. Finally I decide to eat my nuggets, so I go into the bag and pull out.... what the f&^k! A Filet-O-Fish!!? So now I'm dinnerless, my McDonaldland dreams have been dashed and some crazy guy keeps telling me to be quiet when I havent even said anything since I got on the ferry. Maybe he could read thoughts and knew I was yelling profanity in my mind. Bleh, what a sh&^ty night!

My top 3:
The Chase Credit Cards that has the "I'm 22 for the moment." song. Hate it because there's more going on in his life at 22 then there is in mine.
The car commercials with that weird German guy that "Unpimp the auto." What the...?

WOW, I have no idea a "Secret of the Sword" trailer existed. I don't think it appears in any of the BCI DVD sets. Great coup!
And the McDLT... man, my mouth is watering just looking at the screen cap on your site!
I finally found a local source for those Shamrock Shakes. The day before St. Pats, I went into a local McD's, my heart full of hopelessness, and asked the absolutely mammoth woman behind the counter, "You don't have Shamrock Shakes anymore do you"? With an annoyed expression, looking me like I asked if McDonald's served hamburgers, she said "Uhh, yes..." I quickly ordered a large (at a cost of $3.50, geesh!), and left. My heart happy and full of joy because I got my Shamrock Shake, and relived some favorite memories bought back to me by Matt's website.
The kicker though? There was NO advertising for the shakes, none on TV, no shamrocks inside the restaurant, there wasn't even a mention of them on the menu board! There was NO record of them at all! I never asked before, so I assumed they didn't have them. What's up with that? Anyone else had the same experience in a McDs?
Chestnuts roasted by Destro @ 03/22/2006 06:08 AM EST
They've been playing Shamrock Shake ads on the radio here. A couple different ones since before V-Day and are still playing. Mine always has advertising on the menu board and sometimes a display by the drive-in. They might have taken them down after St. Patty's because they're just finishing off whatever is leftover.
Commercials I hate right now? Ummm... I dunno. I hate how there aren't any fun McDonald's commercials and they're all centered around the full day of exercise you'll need to work off a Happy Meal. They should bring back Cosmo. Nothing makes me hungrier for a cheeseburger than a chubby white kid.
And yeah kidneyboy is has been kinda quiet lately. I wonder where Matt's run off to now, haven't seen him online in a bit...

My least favorite commercials are those fat-burning pill commercials. Basically everything they say is viciously misleading. Like the fact that "it's so powerful it was granted a U.S. patent." Considering there's also a patent on the books for a "Scented Doll With the Appearance of an Aged Person," that's not terribly impressive. And then there's the whole "Warning: this product is so powerful it will actually make you lose body fat. Only order if you want to lose body fat." It's like Cingular making a commercial with the tagline "Warning: this product is so powerful it will actually connect and exchange audio information with other phones. Only order this product if you wish to exchange audio information with other phones." And all the badly-emoting people exclaiming about how they didn't eat right, didn't exercise, and still lost weight. They actually refer to it is a "magic pill." It just drives me crazy. I mean, these people are still going to kill themselves from cholesterol poisoning and heart disease and diabetes and all the other problems you get with obesity, but hey at least they get to wear smaller pants am I right?
So sorry. I think I'd better go lie down for a while.

These ghetto fabulous ones are always the same. Last night's was about a dude who gets out of jail, goes on a huge shopping spree because his friends are loaded, then decides to try to keep things clean. Also, on Saturday mornings, I remember being really bummed out when Looney Tunes would come on, because I knew that was the last cartoon of the morning.
I wholeheartedly agree. Saturdays at our house were cleaning days, and as soon as the cartoons were over we had to get to work. I remember that I never really enjoyed the Looney Tunes, but I watched them anyway to postpone the inevitable. I once said to my husband, "Remember how bummed you'd be when Looney Tunes came on and you knew Saturday morning was over?" He said, "No, I loved Looney Tunes! I looked forward to it!" I hate it when that happens.
On the topic of the "I Love The..." specials, they should make more of an effort to find people who actually CARE about this stuff. My favorite moments are the ones where usually-cool celebrities see something and almost flip out. "Oh my gosh, I totally had these!" and then they start enthusiastically telling some story from their youth regarding said item. That's so much better than these pseudo-comedians trying to look cool by pointing out how stupid the stuff we loved was. It's ironic that the shows named "I Love The..." are full of people saying, "This was the worst toy ever invented. That was the most awful song ever. That was the dumbest TV show. This was the ugliest thing people ever wore..."

Nevermind that the girl in the commercial looks like she's in her 30's. If you don't have a bank account by then, what are you doing with your life?
Any Old Navy commercial usually irks the hell out of me. I think they make them as annoying as possible. I think they take direction from the Devil himself. He takes a trip up from whatever level of hell he resides in just to make those annoying commercials.

I wonder what exactly it is that led to the downfall of Saturday morning/afterschool kids' shows? Did the kids change as the years passed, or was it more to do with those FCC requirements for "educational" programming?
Whatever it is, they've surely ruined an entire generation. Kids *need* constant marketing and cheap animation. It's part of this balanced breakfast.

Thank you for posting up more commercials, especially the Fruity Marshmellow Krispies one. I hope you put more up soon.

That kid in the Jedi commercial sounds like Daniel from Transformers. I didn't see Hotrod anywhere though.

This brings up an interesting memory from my childhood: That Empire was, by far, the last Star Wars movie I watched of the original trilogy by a mile. Why did it take so goddamn long for me to see it? Why did Saturday afternoon movies always seem to either show A New Hope (or as I knew it then, just plain ol' Star Wars) or Jedi? Why did they only play the LOTR animated movie in its entirety once, to my memory? I don't know, but goddamn did I love me some Saturday afternoon movie.

Thanks for once again showing me why this is the greatest site on the internet. I love the old commercials. One thing though, I don't mean to nitpick (ok yeah I do) but in your review of the Reeses commercial you mention that they are playing on a Colecovision. However those are most definately Intellivision controllers they are holding. Anyway I knew I would not be able to sleep until I posted that so there it is. Hope to see more of these great commercials soon, thanks!

Ahhh, after nearly a year long exile I've spent the last two days re-immersing myself in the magic that is X-E. Thanks for all the great memories, Matt! I loved every single one of the commercials, and they brought a few things to mind that I hadn't thought of in almost 20 years. I would appreciate a Mac Tonight commercial in a future entry though. I loved the Mac!
On a side note, I was also sad when Looney Toones would come on every Saturday. Nothing worse than the end of the cartoon goodness! I loved D & D, Kidd Video, Galaxy High, Pole Position, Laser Tag, Smurfs, and the Wuzzles...those were some good times.
