Longest week of my life, but its saturday already?

Chestnuts roasted by James @ 01/21/2006 04:29 PM EST

Yay, I finally remembered it was Saturday, and Im here for the SNT, I just hope I know something about whatever topic comes up, the last few SNTs I was out of the loop!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 01/21/2006 04:46 PM EST

Wow, early for a SNT. Luckily I have no life, so I can enjoy it from the beginning. What's everyone up to out there?

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Boligarky @ 01/21/2006 04:46 PM EST

Saturday night thread baby!
I got two big boxes in the mail today. I won some old G.I. Joe vehicles off of eBay. I got a Cobra W.O.L.F., a cobra M.A.G.G.O.T., a gi Joe H.A.V.O.C., a joe snow cat, a Cobra S.T.U.N., a Cobra Night Raven, a cobra pogo ballistic battle ball, a cobra jet pack, a joe R.P.V., a joe air defense battle station, a cobra battle barge, a joe triple t, a joe persuader, a cobra manta ray, a joe Dominator Snow Tank, a joe M.M.S., a joe weapon transport, a joe vector jet, a Dreadnok air skiff, and various accessories. There was also a Zuckuss figure and a Hoth rebel trooper. It all cost about $45 and that includes the 15 bucks for shipping. I’m living good.

SNT!
I got this cool SW Lego set, a "V-Wing", based on the proto-TIEs that escort Palpy's shuttle in E3. Now that just rocks my socks.

Chestnuts roasted by Reid @ 01/21/2006 05:02 PM EST

Star wars! The V-wing is not a prototype tie fighter but a whole different type of fighter. It began full production near the end of the clone wars and was meant to replace the ARC 170 which was itself the replacement for the V-19 torrent starfighter. You can see many of them in the opening battle over courascant. God help me.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 05:08 PM EST

And by courascant I mean Coruscant.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 05:09 PM EST

So, who else still has their Xmas tree and stuff still up? I cant be the only one!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 01/21/2006 05:12 PM EST

Yeah, how dare you misspell that name!

I kid. If you asked me a similar question about the original trilogy, I'd be able to rattle off an equally wordy/nerdy chain of "facts."

I always miss SNT! I haven't had a Saturday night off from the movie theater since before I started reading this blog...I always miss the SNT fun and have to play SMC (Sunday Morning Catch-Up). In fact, I'm going to stay at school next weekend instead of coming home to work, just so I can participate in the madness. (Yes, I have no life).

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 01/21/2006 05:16 PM EST

mtrox- believe you me, I know far more about the original trilogy than about the horrible and depressing prequals. They'er not depressing because Hayden becomes Darth and it's all sad, but because it was Hayden who became Darth. What a horrible actor. And don't get me started with the other characters and the pacing. Oy Gevalt!

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 05:24 PM EST

I don't fault the actors at all (In fact, if you see Shattered Glass or Life As A House, I think you'd view Hayden quite a bit differently). Even proven actors--Ewan MacGregor, Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman--give wooden, awful performances in each of the movies. Besides, the acting in the original trilogy wasn't exactly Oscar-worthy. The problem (or at least, MY problem) with the prequels goes right to the basic blocks of filmmaking...writing and directing. The Empire Strikes Back is, in my opinion, one of the best-directed films of all time, noting that it wasn't even Lucas who directed that one. The prequels...not as good.

I'll be back to debate the merits of the Star Wars prequels in Sunday Morning Catch-Up.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 01/21/2006 05:36 PM EST

The Darth went nuts like he promised! Did you ever see the Decepticon named Snow Cat from TF: Energon? I bought him just for the Joe reference. I just recently bought ThunderBlast. Her transformation is similar to G1 Scourge. She gets to pose on the shelf next to BW Air Razor, TM2 Air Razor, BM BlackArachnia, and Energon Arcee.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 01/21/2006 05:38 PM EST

There was this gossip story recently about Hayden...said while he was filming in NYC a fan confronted him and accused him of ruining the prequels, and allegedly HC got ticked and chased the fanboy down the street. I had trouble believing the tale for several reasons. Namely? Jake Lloyd, JarJar Binks, microscopic Jedi germs, virgin births, genital-faced ethnic stereotypes, etcetera, etcetera, and that's all before he was even involved. If the movies sucked nobody's to blame but you-know-who and any fan (and certainly the actor himself) knows it..
HC gets waaaay too much crap for his work. He did what he could...and since when have we watched Star Wars for Oscar caliber performances anyway?

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 01/21/2006 05:40 PM EST

George Lucas, I hate you. There I said it.

Honestly and somewhat sadly I can say I just had the best birthday I've had since I turned 14. My mom loaned me some cash and I headed out to Zern's for the day. Took a ton of photos. For $30 I got:
Masters of the Universe Party Favors MIB
2 Egon Figures
1 Launchpad McQuack bendy figure
2 packs of Eureeka's Castle stickers
Sailor Moon Balloons
a "Have you hugged your Smurf today?" pin
4 Darkwing Duck comics to color books
a pack of Alf trading cards
2 packs of Nicktoons sticker/tattoo things
2 packs of California Raisins World Tour cards
1988 Cool Spot Sunglasses MIB
Batman & Robin Window Cling
Penelope and Pepe le Pew enamel pin (for my buddy)
a Leonardo Indian Figure
some sort of TMNT Dinosaur
Addams Family Cereal sealed w/ flashlight from 1991
a Sno-Cone
a couple games of TMNT Pinball at the arcade

also a couple other little things because IIRC, a certain webmaster has a birthday coming up on Feb 6. wink

Oh, and a sealed 200 piece jigsaw puzzle of Lazer Tag. I don't know why, I never even liked Lazer Tag. But it was only $1. *shrug*

Hi kittycatgirl.

Chupacabra- Is it true that you kill goats and then drink their blood or is that just a racial stereotype?

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 06:31 PM EST

Wow. I spent thirty bucks today and all I got was two liters of irish creme liquor and a six-pack of Guinness. But hey, at least now I can bake a steak and ale pie for dinner. And scones! Hooray scones!

Note: while Guinness is not a vital ingredient in most scone recipes, the process is helped along considerably by large mugs of Irish coffee.

Just asking because I taught the big Plains Indians part of the course this past week and I've got Indians on the brain. The kids have a little bit of trouble relating since we are in here in the South...

Boring Saturday for me. I rented a bunch of videos, nothing really good that I haven't already seen. So, that'll probably be my night.

How's it going, SNTers?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt(#2?) @ 01/21/2006 07:47 PM EST

Well, I'm finally around for a SNT- it's been awhile.

SNOWED IN here in Quebec- I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, and my satellite dish BLEW OFF of the house in the storm, so I have no tv. At least the boyfriend and I have over 300 movies between us, so I am sure we'll make it through...maybe we'll watch a few episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or "Masters of the Universe"...God Bless entire seasons of shows on DVD!

IHAQ, Chupacabra- I Still have my tree up too, in all her glory- lights lit, gifts underneath, lights in the window. I figure this is one of the perks of getting your own place- you can just DO THAT. Keep the Xmas vibe goin.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/21/2006 07:56 PM EST

My tree's been down for a while, but only because it had to be - I'm moving to just outside of Philadelphia in a week.

The weather's been damn strange here. We've had snow, sun, rain, wind, thunder, lighting...all in less than two weeks! I'm starting to wish someone would just pick a weather forcast and stick with it.

God bless my brother, who gave me his entire collection of "Star Wars" action figures after he cleared out all of his old toys. There were some bounty hunter figures in there I've wanted forever. As for the new trilogy...I finally got to see "Revenge of the Sith," and while it's never going to be the kind of phenomenon the original was, I have to admit I weirdly enjoy the dark vibes all over the place.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 01/21/2006 08:19 PM EST

Chupacabra- The origin of "Darth Poop". It was the only name that I could think of quickly.

My biggest problem with the prequal trilogy isn't really that big of a deal. The Clone Wars. Now at the end of ep2, that's the kinds of battles that I wanted to see in ep3, but no. The battles were just so tiny. Mearly skirmishes and the clone trooper armor didn't change at all except for the helmet. I just try to ignor ep1. It's just to painful.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 08:32 PM EST

Mattman- It's a Farmer's/Flea Market in eastern PA. It's my little slice of heaven. A lot of the sellers are so old and Dutchy they don't even know what eBay is. I'm planning on writing an article about it soonish, but you can see most of the lovely photos I took here:

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 01/21/2006 08:33 PM EST

I was in Toys R Us yesterday looking forlornly for an Xbox 360. I swung by the action figure aisle and saw what must be the greatest crossover toy of all time- a Darth Vader Transformer. He turns into the Tie Advanced from Episode IV.

Transformers and Star Wars in a single toy- bliss! I haven't opened him yet but he looks like he'll be really cool.

Wow Mystie--I'm sort of new to PA, where exactly is that place?? Mattman's right...it not only sounds like the Palace of Jesus--it looks like it too!! I'm living in Harrisburg nowadays...

Chestnuts roasted by Chupacabra @ 01/21/2006 08:41 PM EST

Mystie - I LOVE Zern's! Haven't been there in awhile. I usually drag my guy to alot of flea markets in the bucks county area during the summer.

I checked out your site, I hope you don't take offense to this and I mean it as a compliment, but I think you look like Kirsten Dunst.

Muppet Baby - dude, I'm in Quebec too!! Lovin the weather, especially the icy coating on my stairs, ESPECIALLY when I walk down them in the morning to get to work and fall and soak my ass. Sorry that you're snowed in but it sounds like you're making the best of it. Happy saturday night to everyone!

Well, I usually lurk, but I am especially bored tonight. Anyone find any good movies on TV? C'mon, gimme anything.

Chestnuts roasted by GeigerTron @ 01/21/2006 09:20 PM EST

GeigerTron- Austin Powers on AMC. It's almost over though.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/21/2006 09:34 PM EST

GeigerTron
I just flipped through for half and hour and no, there's nothing on. I'm gonna keep the tv off till SNL. That's what this thread is for though right?
I took my son to Hoodwinked today. Being as I only ever see kid's movies, I have to say it's one of the better ones out lately. But still not great. I think it was the soundtrack that kept me laughing that made me enjoy it. We went downtown, cause I'll take any excuse to get out of the burbs. Oh, and girls I dropped into urban outfitters and they are having quite the after holiday sale. FYI. I feel weird posting clothing sale tips here. O well.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 01/21/2006 09:37 PM EST

You can hate the prequels all you want but don't hate Lucas just because of them. He's done too much for movies in general to get dragged down for just those.

I conjecture that George Lucas is actually a space man.

Awesome. I've recently added a few more Cybertron figures to my collection.

My current new favorite is Sideways. I just he just looks awesome, even for a Deluxe size. He is not too hard to transform from plane to robot, but I found it a little touigher when transforming back to plane mode. The cyberkey Sideways comes with changes the insignia on his left arm from Autobot to Decepticon and 4 orange blades extend. I believe the sculpturing is really well done, but the wings that attach to his right hand to become a blade don't stay on him too well.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to SNL tonight (hoping it doesn't suck like last week), and my favorite anime (well, the only Anime that I actually like), Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is on in about 3 minutes big grin

I'll start. Horatio Sans sucks. But I just saw that Steve Martin is gonna be on next week, that's promising.
doho I wish I were

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 01/22/2006 12:00 AM EST

doho, before SNL came on, I was playing it...sorta. I recently re-picked up Super Smash Bros Melee. I've become re-obessed with it.

And I'll tell you right now, 1/2 hour in, it's already better than last week's episode.

Another "SNL Digital Short" was shown (according to a friend, they're written by members of the Living Island comedy team), and in weird coincidence from a few blogs ago, it was a Metal-ish band singing a song about The Legend of Young Chuck Norris, kicking everyone's ass.

And they brought back Carol...I was expecting The Girl With No Gaydar. S/he was only funny in the Key Party sketch from last season.

Next show, Feb. 4 is indeed Steve Martin & Prince. How long as it been since Steve last hosted? 11 years? And he'll retain his "Most Hosted" Award and creating the 15 Timer Club (he already hosted 14, with John Goodman & Alec Baldwin tied for 2nd with 13 times)

So far, the sketch that got the most laughs out of me was the Pirate Convention. Just the idea of those pirates going "arr!" for 6 minutes seemed dull, but they really went to town with the idea.

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 01/22/2006 12:13 AM EST

Just to throw my helmet into the Blockade Runner, as it were...

I saw Life as a House. I thought it was a great movie, but I do contend that Hayden Christiansen played the same whiny, self-absorbed malcontent that he plays in Eps. II & III. Not that Mark Hamill was an Oscar winner or anything, but come on. I defy anyone to watch the "I killed the Sand People" confession in Attack of the Clones and not laugh. Plus I directly attribute the de-awesome-ification of James Earl Jones' Vader at the end of Sith to Hayden's atrocious performance hitherto.

Sorry for the mini-rant, but I'm an actor and that boy offends my sensibilities something mighty.

Carry on.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 01/22/2006 12:21 AM EST

I don't think I've seen Hayden in any movies not related to Star Wars yet, and refuse to pass judgment until I do. The only actors involved with the prequels who managed to survive without me thinking less than them were Liam and Ian, and with that kind of track record, directing stupidity and script stupidity must have played a big part. All this said, what I take from Rhino's post is that the next article must include the word "hitherto" in it somewhere.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 01/22/2006 12:27 AM EST

I saw Underworld 2 Friday. It is good if you like the first Underworld, lots and lots of gore that makes you go 'ew' and naked Kate Beckinsale. I think I counted at least 3 jaws ripped off. Very entertaining.

Lizzy and Muppet Baby: Do you two also think Stephen Harper is part robot? I'd say robots were trying to take over the world, but they must be really slow robots of they're planning to launch a campaign for world domination from up here in Canada.

Chestnuts roasted by Gabbylicious @ 01/22/2006 12:55 AM EST

Gabbylicious - I always thought of him as more cardboard than robot, actually.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 01/22/2006 01:13 AM EST

Lizzy- Fellow Quebecer, eh? Right on. Yeah, the weather is insane.

About Hayden Christensen- OK, I think he CAN act...he was great in both "Life as a House" (which I checked out before Ep.2 so I could get a look at this guy who would be Darth) and "Shattered Glass" (which I saw after Ep.3, to re-assure myself that he can act after all)...

The problem wasn't him- it was the SCRIPT- My God, lines such as "I wish I could just wish away my feelings for you" leave nothing good for ANYONE to work with- I think anyone would have taken a lot of flack in this role, since the writing was so bad- he is just unfortunate enough to be a lesser known actor and so he REALLY gets blamed. I mean, Ewan, Natalie Portman, even THE MAN Samuel L. Jackson himself all kind of....suck a little....in these prequels- they're all wooden, as someone here said earlier, and campy. But in a bad way, not the funny, tongue-in-cheek way like the originals.

The script is campy like before, but treated as though it's serious shit, therefore ruining the campy-ness and wrecking the whole effect...does anyone hear what I am saying??? Argh.

I LOVE Star Wars to death, and because of the way these prequels were done, I now have to spend the rest of my life defending Hayden Christensen!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/22/2006 01:31 AM EST

Tonite's episode of SNL was GREAT! My only disappointment was I was hoping they would throw in Toonces, The Driving Cat as sort of an injoke in the Cat Fancy sketch.

I loved the Target sketch mostly because I love the voice the woman uses.

The digital sketch was cool, but still no where near as good as the Lazy Sunday one.

Toupees for Babies was Hilarious.

Peter Sarsgard Sars Guard was funny.

The Pirate thing was funny. Also loved Drew Barrymore's cameo.

Gays in Space was cute.

The NSA spying sketch was also funny.

Carol has got to go though.

I'm loving the new editions to the cast this season.

Sheesh. Mystie, those photos....those PHOTOS....these Choco-Diles, Mystie, these Choco-Diles....

...don't you realize what this means? You could never work a day in your life. All you would have to do is go to Zern's every day, buy something for ten cents, then come back and sell it on E-Bay for $50. Fifty dollars a day AT LEAST. Think about it.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 01/22/2006 03:07 AM EST

Matt used to sell stuff on eBay for a living and now look at him. He is a god among mortals. Just think about that Mystie and if you do decide to do what the God of War tells you to do, can I have your autograph before your website becomes one of the greatest ever? Not that it isn't already great. I can't even have a site ever since I posted those nude pictures of me on the interweb. Apparently people went blind.

And I blame the actors and George Lucas and don’t you tell me to forgive George Lucas because he gave us the original trilogy (aka the greatest movies ever, the pinnacle of film), the Indiana Jones films, and THX 1138. 3 words. Howard the Duck. He just should have stopped making films after that. He was a producer; he had the power to stop it. Then the prequels. My god, he made me question my pathetic fan-boy life. I looked at my action figures wondering if it was just wasted money and petroleum. My action figures people! I wondered if I should really plan on going into comic books or film. I worried that if I did, I might end up like George. He made me question my pride, my dreams, and every time that I watch my favorite movies I’ll have to think about Jar Jar. Go to hell George Lucas. And the actors, even the good ones, sucked. I’m going to go cry now.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 01/22/2006 09:46 AM EST

Dohopoki: You raise a good point (and Darth Poop, don't lose faith). Everybody in their career has their hits and misses, and Lucas has had far too many hits to simply discount the man for a bad three-film run. That would be like saying Martin Brest sucks because of Gigli (while Midnight Run and Beverly Hills Cop were entertaining, and Scent of a Woman was such an amazing film).

When you look at the six films Lucas actually directed, three are considered good and three are considered bad by the general filmgoing public. The good are THX 1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars. The bad are the prequels. While that's an even number of hits and misses, the hits were so innovative and good that they outweigh the misses. Top all of that off with the technological advances (ILM, THX, etc.), and it's hard to look down on the guy.

I'm not counting the things Lucas executive produced, because Lucas himself probably didn't have much of a creative hand in that work (with the notable exception of the Indy trilogy). Exec-producer credits are handed out like candy. Just look at all the movies being "presented" by Quentin Tarantino recently. Kevin Smith got an exec-producer credit on Good Will Hunting just for handing the Affleck/Damon script to the Weinsteins.

Anyway, in my estimation, the prequels fall as much on the heads of Lucas' yes-men as they do on Lucas himself. If producer Rick McCallum or anybody else in his high esteem would have had the balls or the power to veto ideas, the collaborative process probably would have made for a better series of films.

Darth Poop: You came into this thread talking about the particular classes of starcraft in the film. You seem to have some sort of lust for the new movies, and that's enviable. Towards the end of the thread, it's all piss and vinegar about the prequels. Hopefully all of our Lucas-bashing hasn't soured your prequel-love (or prequel-like) at all. That certainly wasn't my intention, and there are parts of me that wish I could look at the prequels in a less jaded way.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 01/22/2006 10:15 AM EST

mtrox- I never loved the prequels. The only reason I know so much about the ships and crap is because I like the clone wars comic books and cartoons and I bought the books from DK publishing with the pretty pictures and facts. I really like the clone troopers solely because I like stormtroopers. I love the original trilogy with all my heart but don't be mistaken. I hated the prequels before this thread and I will always hate the prequels. I agree with your opinion on the yes men; they can go to hell with Lucas.

I didn't like Episode I very much, but II and III were ok...I just had to remember that parts of the OT were pretty cheesy at times, too.

As for Hayden C. acting: Everyone complains that he is a whiny bitch in Ep. II, but I see it as how the role is supposed to be. He's an adolescent...not Darth Vader the younger...

In Ep. III, I thought he did a great job, given the terrible lines he had to say ("No I love you more?" WTF?)

kb- I thought that you had read my earlier post and was clueless as to the train wreck that is Howard the Duck. Good morrow to you.

Lucas kind of pioneered the techniques for the use of HD cameras and CGI backgrounds on the prequels and got Robert Rodriguez into it, and of course JarJar was the first fully digital character in a movie...it's going overboard to say Sin City or Two Towers wouldn't have been made without the prequels but ILM deserves credit for the ground they broke making them. (Just MHO)
To completely change the subject, who's totally absolutely positively boundlessly jazzed about The Sopranos coming back in March? It's been so long, and there's still a long time to go but it finally feels like it's getting close...it's only, what, seven weeks? Cannot wait.

Yeah but selling stuff on eBay is such a pain. Taking photos, typing descriptions, then they pretty much double-dick you with fees between selling and PayPal. I'd rather spend that time actually playing with my toys. Don't worry, though. I have a pretty good feeling things will be picking up site wise in the not-too-distant future. smile

Hey everyone!! I just got back from Smithville (cute little historic town in New Jersey, for any out-of-staters).

Darth Poop, sounds cool bout the GI Joe vehicles you won. DEEEEK!

Ahhh, SNL was EXCELLENT last night!!!!!!!!! That toupees for babies commercial cracked me up!!!!! We laughed at Carol b/c she reminds my boyfriend of someone--can't remember who he said though--just saying "I'm Carol!" makes him laugh hysterical! Much better than last week's ep.

I also taped Dennis Miller's HBO special last night b/c I was in Alantic City, and didn't get home until 11:25, just in time for SNL. I can miss SNL, of course, but then I gotta tape it. No problem there!

But, whiz kids, lemme put it to you this way--I have not missed an SNL Season Premiere since 1995. I know, it's pretty bad, but consider this--I was in 7th grade in September 1995. I'm 23 now, and out of college. Yikes, that's alot of season premieres!!!

Darth Poop- You know, if it wern't for Lucas, there wouldn't be a Original Trilogy. Of course the prequals are inferior to the OT, but whatever, that's just your opinion.

I love you Reid. If this didn't make you scream I don't know what will.

kingklash, I love your plug for the "V of Doom" in the previous blog entries.

This logo stuff is great.

*V zooms out and in three times against a light blue background as creepy Viacom music plays under the logo*

Truly Zerns does appear to be the garden of eden. Curse you Eve! If you hadn't eaten that stinkin' apple, I wouldn't be stuck in New York, far far away from the nostalgiac goodness.

stupid apple

Whoops! Sorry Darth, I vow to read all posts prior commenting. H-T-D still bites, in a hilarious way.

Hello people looks like I'm riding the day after wave again but oh well. I'm right where I was last week too watching AZN TV waiting for my cheesy anime fix of the week. Got a real gem this week too Roujin Z about some space age hospital bed that goes beserk!

Just have to sit through the stand up comedy show first which is actually quite hilarious tonight. There was this little mockumentary on just now detialing a forgotten battle in chinese history between General Chow vs Colonel Sanders over who's chicken recipe was better.

Hmm that Zern's place looks awful familiar but I'm fairly sure I've not been there. I think its just drumming up buried memories of the flea market my ex girlfriend would drag me to whenever I went along with her for her trips home to Delaware. It was on the PA side of the DE/PA line but I can't remember if it had a name or what that name might have been since I try to avoid remembering shit that leads to thought of the aformentioned ex.

Also you have a nice site there Mystie I poked around a bit and got a nice nostaligia boost from the "Lost Nick Shorts" article. Ironically I had a "Inside out boy" flashback just the other day watching the show MythBusters on discovery channel where they were debunking the swing set 360 swing myth.

Anyway on to watching the beserk hospital bed

That's ok, Jackie. I'm heading to Oaklyn, on the Jersey side of Philadelphia. I have reletives who live down the street, and one of my sisters lives in the next town over.

Don't worry, Matt, my parents are still down here, so I'll probably be visiting whenever I'm up for a very long bus ride.
