11/25/2005 Entry: "Black Friday?"

I chose to skip, but looking at the circulars...boy, there were some mighty fine deals out there for Black Friday. On the other hand, during my choosing-to-skippage, I've read at least a dozen articles online about fights breaking out on lines at stores. Hilarious. Anyone get out there today? Post your experiences, and purchases!

They turned me loose early from work and I seriously considered hitting the stores but I decided to come home and take a nap instead.
What are people fighting over? I thought 360s were the hot ticket item, and it seems everybody knows those are impossible to get until like foreva so are people just fighting for freebies and goodies and whatnot?

I hit target, gamestop, and best buy today just for the sake of "people watching"... and am now thoroughly convinced that there is more than just one species of human being. Also! I saw a video on the news tonight of a wal-mart opening up and when all the raving customers poured in some guy got knocked down and literally TRAMPLED. People are nuts!

I stayed in and did homework most of the day, but I did venture out to Hobby Lobby at about 4pm. It was pretty crowded, but they actually had enough people working the registers for once. I got six 8.5x11 frames for about 12.00 bucks, which was great deal....I've been printing pictures like mad since I got a photo printer a while back.

I said this about the first half of my Black Friday experience in the last thread, so I'll post it here:

Ryane: Everyone kept saying "OH this line is ridiculous!" Umm, hello? It's BLACK FRIDAY IN A TOY STORE! Idiots...

The exact thing happened in my KB Toys store earlier today (worked from 4:30-9am and I have to go back at 5pm and work till 9:30ish), and the store was smaller than yours to boot. The real line went down the first aisle while everyone else was wrapping around the front of the other 3 aisles, and when I told them they had to move, they didn't move for 5 minutes and then they did move, they all bitched. At 6am, this was the funniest thing ever. And when I got home at 9:30, I slept till 2:30. Nothing like a power nap.

And if Jeff is out there, I missed getting your package and it's at the post office now...at a town that I don't live near.

And now for Part II: I went back at 5, was a cashier. It wasn't that busy, but it was still crowded. There was more bitchiness in Part I. And I got a Supreme Starscream for $40.

I used to force my parents to take my siblings and I out on Black Friday just so we could witness the carnage first hand. Instead of waiting forever in long lines, we'd go through stores and give each other hints for presents. It was my parents' opportunity to burn off all the excess turkey from the night before, and a chance for us kids to watch people act like absolute idiots.

Squee, that sucks, but if Rome doesn't make it to S2, it's not like there weren't any warning signs...

1) Several recurring characters offed, including a few major characters.
2) History dictates characters that are not ready to carry the weight of the show to carry the weight of the show.
3) Returning viewers first have to get over #1, and then somehow remember that they watched Rome when it airs again in 2026.
4) Perilious situation: Some actors will be too young, other actors will be getting too old.
5) NO BLOOD

Hindsight being 20/20, they should've spread S1 out over two seasons.

I'm in Canada, so no big shopping mania for us today. I work in retail though, so I am dreading the steady increse in traffic at the mall. I hate customers (unfortunately being a full time student doesn't leave many choices for employment that don't involve customer service) and people start to get extra demanding and rude this time of year. I'm the fastest cashier my store has, and I know our return policy VERY well, but people this time of year are always telling me how to do my job. Drives me nuts. Yet I still love Christmas, so I guess it balances out in the end.

Nope, we skipped today. Decided to stay in, put up the decorations and watch Christmas movies. Tho most everything will be gone tomorrow, we're goin out tomorrow. One funny thing tho was my brother swung by my place and was like, I just came from Best Buy and they have PS2's for 15.99! I was like, damn! grab me one! So he left right away and when he gets there he calls me up and is like.. "I messed up a mundane detail... I saw the decimal point in the wrong place" So he gets a smack for thinking 159.99 is 15.99, but redeems himself for fitting an Office Space reference in his screw up. Thats all from Victory Blvd.

I dig Octavian (and I think Max Pirkis does an awesome job) so #2 and #4 don't get to me too much, at least as they relate to him. My biggest question is how they would work those dictated historical events into the continuity that they've set up. It does seem as if they've fudged the facts/left out too many important bits to have a great position to continue if they want to try and preserve the accuracy they do have. I really want it to go at least one more season, but I totally agree that they should have extended this one into two seasons and just include more of the bits they excluded (more Egypt, Octavian's military career and most of all more of the Salad Man himself).

I didn't see any fights today, sadly. But I had to wait in line for like 40 minutes to put my $80 DVDR on layaway. I had a lot of people bumping into my ass with their carts. Then they tried to circle around me without looking around to see that there's people coming from the other fucking direction. But I spent less than $40 and got Tumble Time Tigger, a Hot Wheels set, Guess Who, Connect Four, and Cheer Bear with DVD to ship off to Toys for Tots.

I live near Reading, which is like the easiest place to get welfare in the state and in the top 5 of highest crime rate for cities of it's size in the US. But it's also the outlet shopping capital of the world (so I'm told) so there's always cheap goods to be had and plenty of Christmas Crunch all year long. Ooh, and there's a Stauffers Cookie Outlet right down the road. Mmm... irregular animal crackers.

I stayed at home in my nice warm house today. After being up over 36 hours by Thanksgiving night, I had to get some sleep. Also the transmision in my car is starting to make more and more "evil" noises, hence no driving unless need be.

Thanks Discovery for having marathons of Mythbusters and Ditry Jobs on. If only Showtime was rerunning season 2 of Dead Like Me I'd be in heaven.

Atleast I have time to bitch slap the rubberband AI in NFS:MW, climb the last few colossus in Shadow Of The Colossus, and hold down Triple H in Smackdown vs Raw 06.

I went to get groceries, still too tired to remember it was Black Friday. It wasn't until after getting groceries, lunch, and going to the bank that I realized it was Black Friday. Huh, didn't notice much traffic... no more than usual, at least.

I didn't, but man I was tempted. They had some insane deals out there, especially Best Buy, like a 5mp Kodak digital camera, with 3x optical zoom, for $130, $70 less than Newegg. Best Buy also had some set-top DVD recorders for less than $100 (I would imagine, finally, people will stop recording on VHS tape!) They also had some mainstream DVDs for $4 or so, at Best Buy, Target and a few others, but no titles I was particularly interested in.

I got up at 4 am like a crazy person to get a few things this year. Went to Manards boy that was crazy! (This is like Home Depot but bigger) Line wrapped around the building due to they were the only one with a good ad locally. There was a group of about 50 people that came right at 6:00 am and stood by the door and everyone was screaming "back of the line!!!" And "your going to burn in hell a-holes!" Because the doors opened and they ran in front of everyone. They had aa batteries for 2.00 for 40 batteries and everyone went ape poo over them. I went for a gps system and a pizza pazazza thing. Everyone had notes on the door NO XBOX 360 HERE. So they must be the "hot" item this year. Woohoo! We have 3! Two for ebay and one to play. Ahhh...I love the holidays. Hope all your turkey days went well!

Where I live, everyone has their Christmas shopping done by mid August, so Black Friday isn't much of a big deal.

Cartoon Network is going to be showing "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." I guess having an animated opening-title sequence is enough for a movie to qualify for Cartoon Network.

Cartoon Network is playing live action movies now. Boomerang is playing cartoons from 2004. ESPN plays sports movies. CMT plays movies totally unrelated to country music. Biography channel plays older sitcoms. TV Land has new shows on it. Nick at Night has crap. Toon Disney has alot of live actin shows. MTV 2 doesn't have music on it half the time anymore (That's TWO strikes MTV)

Television sucks.

Since I have kids, I went out toy shopping. Most of the stuff I had already, but I needed one more big present for each of them. TRU had a lego castle that my son had expressed interest in on sale for forty bucks off, so that's what I got him, and a Dora the Explorer Talking House for my daughter, which wasn't on sale.

There wasn't any craziness in my area, everybody was polite, and the lines weren't even very long.

Today I'm hoping to drag my husband out to buy our tree and get it put up.

I went out yesterday even though I hadn't planned to. TARGET, TRU (not enough good sales for a company teetering on the brink of Chapter 11), K-MART, WALMART. I still had not picked up SIMPSONS SEASON 6 and anyone who knows me would tell you that that is blasphemy (shows how much the baby has changed things). Anyways, when I saw it listed at TARGET for 17.88, I knew I had to go out. Picked that up, the 1933 KING KONG, and K-MART had buy one get one free on EPISODE III figures so I got a Grievous and Sasee Tinn. Here's the obvious problem, this is all stuff FOR ME. We have already shopped for E.Claire and the cats but nothing for Mrs. Manimal. I did look yesterday but I want to find something special. THE SEARCH CONTINUES...

I had to work m'self, but everybody was more or less at the big sales, so we had a quiet day here. Black Friday fights are fun to watch and all, but those are just heat-of-the-moment flare ups, easily started and quickly ended. The best bouts come right at the end, the last minute sissy-slap-parties. Nerves are frayed, pressure's on, theres one relative who's just way difficult to shop for, stores are sparse on merchandise, you're out of ideas, there's at least a hundred other people in the store in the same boat as you, and you're running out of time! Then, some dumb-butt shoves you, or the person shopping with you says the wrong thing, and it's on. Get your shopping done early, peoples. Then, you can just cruise the stores the last week before, and lay bets on the fights that break out.
Saw a woman faint in Wal-Mart two years ago during holiday season, and didn't help any that she was under one of those "Watch For Falling Prices" signs.

went to the gay community here san diego county, hillcrest. it promised to be empty because normal rabid shoppers tend to go to wal-mart for clothes and not boutiques. hillcrest's got the best clothing stores and I am a dedicatd follower of fashion. I went at around 2 in the afternoon and got a sweet raincoat at an upscale thriftstore and a 100 dollar dress shirt for 50 dollars at some gay-male oriented store. still, the clothes in there was rather normal so I bought the shirt.

I'm not anywhere crazy enough to brave the lines around here on Black Friday. They had to call the cops at a Circuit City in Shreveport, and I don't think the Best Buy fared too much better.

What I loved is, I've heard more than one story of people going in and demanding X-Box 360's despite the fact that there were signs everywhere you looked that said "X-BOX 360 SOLD OUT!".

People are so dumb.

I had to go to the bank Friday to cash a check. Now, I don't live exceedingly far from town, but I still chose to drive cuz it was snowing pretty bad. But oh BOY, I got to deal with the people who did. 5:30 AM, pitch black, and about 10 degrees. Our store gives us windbreakers, and I was on drive thru.

I went out last night in a futile effort to find an Xbox 360. I figured that Idaho Falls, ID couldn't have THAT much demand for the things, since it's 80% Mormon and I think Mormons think video games are the devil. Boy was I wrong! I talked to one guy at Best Buy, and he said that while demand was low, so was supply. They only got 34 Xbox 360s- and they are the biggest electronics retailer in town. Apparrently only big cities are getting decent numbers of the things, and those obviously aren't enough from what I'm hearing here and seeing on Ebay. Worse yet, since Idaho Falls is a smallish town (population 50,000) it seems that we can't expect any on the second wave of releases. It might be March or April before local retailers get them again.

At first I thought Microsoft was stupid for going to market with too few units, but now I think they're geniuses. By creating an artificial shortage now, they create buzz for the system. People will go and spend money they had set aside for a 360 on other Christmas presents. Then they can release another batch just before Playstation 3 comes out. All those people that were planning on getting both (like me!) will now have to make a hard choice and decide which to buy, since the vast majority of people can't buy two video game systems in the space of less than a couple of months. If PS3 is short on units like the 360, then Microsoft can glut the market and give an alternative to those who were waiting for the PS3. Even if PS3 has an adequate supply, the 360 can still win as long as it gets more units out just prior to the PS3 release. Everyone will be too broke to buy a PS3 right away, and so Sony's numbers won't be as good as Microsoft's. Microsoft ends up with lots more units sold no matter what happens, and may just dominate Sony in the initial rush to get systems in homes. Since PS2 was more successful than Xbox solely based on the number of units sold, and since Microsoft may actually sell more units BECAUSE of the (allegedly) artificial shortage, Bill Gates gets to laugh all the way to the bank and the 360 will own the market.

God I hate Microsoft. Yet I still want a shiny new Xbox 360 to add to my entertainment center.

Sorry for the random ramblings. I feel like someone who just figured out the villain's evil scheme, and had to tell SOMEONE.

Black Friday was tame here in the Heart of Dixie. So tame in fact that one woman started instigating a fight. I guess she felt she didn't have enough personal space and told the guy beside her "You don't holler and I won't have to holler!" Kind of a wierd choice of words especially when he was giving her enough space to be comfortable. I heard some people "got loud" over a $10 stereo. There was a lady from Detroit and she was saying how people rush the store where she is from and that she is glad it's nice here. I like the south some days. Friday was one of those days I saw a few X-Box 360s too so I feel kind of like I've spotted a rare bird or something.

Comparing the 360 to the Dreamcast isn't that bad of thing. The Dreamcast was a great system that got lost in the shuffle. I doubt that will happen to the 360. I don't have one yet, but I know a couple people that do and the thing has some awesome play. It really is an improvement over the X-Box. I just wish they had more games available and that all of the old X-Box games were compatible.

Xbox 360 = Dreamcast.

Nope, not if we're talking chances of success. Dreamcast was put out by a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy after a billion other failed systems and had no way to support the thing unless it was a total success. Xbox 360 is put out by Microsoft whom have 1 successful system (they lost money because it sold not because it didn't, they put their foot in the door in a big way) and enough money to support it if it ends up being a total failure. Now with being the first out the door in this generation and doing the whole "shortage" thing, it could be more accurate to say Xbox 360 = PS2.

And as a final word. Don't get me wrong, 1 I love the dreamcast, still play it daily. 2, as of yet I see no reason to get an Xbox 360.

I didn't get to read all of the above posts, but I wanted to share my black friday opinion. I only went to 2 stores, looking specificly for a tivo, on sale or not. While there were certainly a ton of people in the stores, both stores were heavily over staffed. At my local best buy I had 4 people assisting me in deciding whether I wanted the 40 gig or 80 gig tivo unit. Then when I went to the line, I only had to wait behind 2 people because they had 12 registers open. While I don't think I'd reccommend fighting people for sale items, if you need assistance with a purchase, black friday turned out to be a good day for me to shop.

Ah, Black Friday. The boyfriend was not thrilled at my decision to go out shopping on this, the most hellish of all shopping days. He even said that if he got trampled to death he would haunt me for all eternity. I, however, could not pass up half-off on My Little Pony merchandise, and I sweetened the pot by saying we could see Harry Potter then instead of Saturday as planned, and he didn't complain after that. Much.

Crowds really weren't all that bad...then again, I think I'm pretty much immune. Yes, it was busy and crowded, but it wasn't in-fear-for-your-life kind of crowded.

Saw Harry Potter, which I liked. I was stubbornly against HP for quite a while, just because I got damn sick of everyone telling me how much I would love it. The boyfriend convinced me to watch the movies, and I got hooked. Only up to the second book, but I like seeing the movies first. Because I'm one of those people who, while I understand that no one would want to sit through it if they did, can't stand that they cut shit out of a book when they make its movie. I liked GoF, but I could tell that they cut out a ton of shit. It just didn't seem to capture the universe as well as other movies have. Still liked it a lot, though.

Definitely saw the "OUT OF XBOX 360" signs absolutely everywhere. I'm only now getting around to buying the Game Cube and PS2, so I'll probably get a PS3 about the time the PS4 comes out. The nice thing about being behind the times is that the games are cheaper.

So basically, pretty mediocre Black Friday. I didn't see anyone get trampled. I heard some people were getting shot in malls somewhere in the country? Insane.

On Black Friday in the store where I work (at the mall), a woman came in around 9AM saying that she bought an MP3 player in Sears and must have accidentally left it in our store about half an hour earlier. She very matter-of-factly wanted to know where we kept lost merchandise. When we told her we hadn't found a Sears bag, she got really angry and said it cost $200, and she "needed to see our security camera tapes" (we don't have security cameras) because she KNEW we were lying and one of the employees must have stolen the MP3 player. It's too bad I like my job, because I would have dearly loved to tell her that she just paid $200 in idiot tax.

I know this is late but I just wanted to say Damn Right! Super Smash Bros. Melee or Soul Calibur 2 for 50 dollars each is a treat but getting them both together for 40 dollars will make you feel like you've won the lottery. Long live Player's Choice, Greatest Hits and Platinum Hits!

Smash Bros. Melee is my favorite game, having purchased it sight-unseen (I played the N64 version a long time ago and loved it). I'm not half-bad at Melee either--I beat the 100-Man Melee a few months ago--unemployment had its advantages.

I just got my GC in January of this year.

Camped out Best Buy with my boyfriend, brother, sister, and her boyfriend. We got there at 10 pm and sat there until 5 am. They had desktops for $150 bucks and we were 13th in line. We got two-- one for us and one for my mom and stepdad for Christmas. It was a blast, really. Some close-calls with people getting angry at line-jumpers, but for the most part it was calm. And very, very cold.
