10/22/2005 Entry: "CinnaScary Apple Jacks!"

Late as usual, but the newest addition to the Halloween Countdown celebrates the one and only new spooky cereal I could find this season, Cinnascary Apple Jacks! The familiar cereal bits have now been graced with the addition of cinnamon swirl marshmallows, a few new mascots, a sheet of glow-in-the-dark stickers and a lot of references to Jamaica, mon.

EDIT: Just found more Halloween cereals. Look for 'em on the site next week!

Also, this is your Saturday Night Thread. Use it wisely. In other news, I just went blonde again. Is there anything good on television tonight?

Sadly, I (meaning my mom) haven't been able to track down Christmas Crunch for a couple years now. It makes me so sad. I travel about 7 hours to go home for the holidays. I expect everything to be as it were in the 80s. Is that so hard??

Chestnuts roasted by Jeff Mack @ 10/22/2005 05:53 PM EST

Evidently, Christmas Crunch is still made in a limited capacity. When I posted that article, I mentioned that it hadn't been around in years. A reader sent in pics of then-totally new Christmas Crunch. Hopefully it'll be revived this year.

Do you think it's feasible to ask for Thanksgiving-themed marshmallows? Little Pilgrims and Native Americans floatin' about among turkey-shaped sweetened corn and oat cereal.

The Batman vs Dracula: The Animated Movie is on tonight on cartoon network... so no there is nothing good on television tonight.

Here is a very stupid story that only X-Ers would appreciate. This sounds made up but it really happened (although I wish it hadn't). Listening to the song WEIRD SCIENCE courtesy of the X-E jukebox with E.Claire and I start leaning to the side like I am playing the keyboard during the chorus. Couldn't place it at first then I realized I had a little Max Rebo thing going on *sigh*

Tried the JONES HALLOWEEN SODAS (yeah, who hasn't by now). Liked the Blue Lemonade the best, S'lime 2nd, Candy Corn gets the bronze, and Caramel Apple was okay.

Carving pumpkins tonight while eating brats and drinking pumpkin beer. J and I will also be watching the first Coffin Joe movie. Rock out...

Batman vs. Dracula looks like it was made by the jackie chan people, not nearly as dark, but more people are dying. strange.

I live in Central Jersey and Christmas Crunch has been in almost every store for the past few Christmases. I only knew it was sold to limited areas when I read an article on X-E about it last year. I wonder if that's the case with Mountain Dew Pitch Black 2, I love that stuff, but I only managed to get three 2-liter bottles and two 20oz bottles...

Chestnuts roasted by Rambozo @ 10/22/2005 07:26 PM EST

I live in Florida, and we have plenty of Mountain Dew Pitch Black and Halloween Jones Sodas, and Frankenberry/Boo Berry/Count Chocula at my local Walmart. The more I drink of the Jones Sodas, the more I like them. Definitely put vanilla ice cream in the candy corn soda. It's GREAT! And I like mixing the Strawberry S'lime and the Scary Berry. It cuts down on the "medicine taste" of the Scary Berry. And makes a pretty purplish blackish color. Yay!

What's the deal with cereal these days? Used to be you got all sorts of movie tie-ins, prizes, and the like. Nowadays you rarely get a prize inside the cereal, instead being greeted with offers for send aways and proof of purchase things or internet promotional codes.

Tie-In cereal is all but dead, and the seasonal variation cereals aren't nearly as prominant as they once were.

WHY!?

Chestnuts roasted by The Wukong Effect @ 10/22/2005 07:51 PM EST

My plans for the night: try out a recipe for Tofu Bacon and maybe watch a movie. The "bacon" is made from tofu and soy sauce with the option of adding a bit of pepper. I hope I have a good movie sitting around the house somewhere.

You'll all be proud/vaguely disgusted to hear that I just spent half an hour photoshopping a classic X-Entertainment logo circa 1952. Fortunately for the internet at large, I remembered just in time that I have no artistic talent, and the result was bollux. But, you know, might be a fun contest at some point in the future. For all you kids and your "badd skillzers." I need a drink.

Despite what my resume says, I have no capacity to attend to details. Which is why my pumpkin sits on the living room floor with half a turkey carved into it. My friends and I watched Garfield and It's the Great Pumpkin with commercials and ate Halloween Peeps of both the ghost and pumpkin varieties. . . all in all, a good night.

I need to go Costume Shop/Party Store hopping tomorrow.

I need:

Slit wrists make-up kit
Cigarettes
Cheap Gold Zippo (I might bum this one off a friend)
Ink-jet Temp. Tattoo Paper

That about does it. I've got the hair-dye and the clothes. Guess what I'm gonna be this year and I'll post a link to the notoriously difficult to find jpeg I'm turning into tattoos. smile

I still can't find ANY holiday cereals out here in western New York. I think we need an X-E food co-op where when one of us finds a holiday food we hord it and only share our supplies with other X-Ers.

I added DVR to my cable package this week so I no longer care what's currently on tv. What a great feeling!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 10/22/2005 08:56 PM EST

Yeah, I'm kind of like that. Only I can't afford DVR, so I have to not care the old-fashioned way. It works about as well, but you end up missing a lot more shows.
I think the co-op idea is great. I'm willing to ship Boo Berry all over the country if I can get Pitch Black and bat Peeps in return.

I'm really disappointed with Disney. They don't appreciate any programming that's more than five years old. Yeah, I like their newer stuff like the Halloweentown movies, but I don't understand why they won't show Sleepy Hollow and other older holiday shows too.

"There's always SNL. Too bad it blows. It's never funny anymore, but I feel like I need to watch it anyway in case it turns around."

Yeah, but the thing about SNL is that eventually it will be hilarious again. It's always risen up and become great after a down period. Tonight's show will probably be disappointing, though. They need to revamp, and soon.

Went to Target tonight and picked up a load of those "That's Gross" toys you reviewed, Matt. You weren't kidding, they kick ass. Grabbed the last two body parts sets, and the very last ooze, as well as some other things. Those yucky balls freakin' rock, BTW.

Chestnuts roasted by Larry @ 10/22/2005 11:02 PM EST

Full pout mode here -- no Pumpkin Beer left at my grocer. That shit was da bomb.

And I would LOVE to see Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow again, too. I used to be able to sing all the songs from it, but now I can only remember "Ichabod, Ichabod, Ichabod Crane..." I don't know when it first came out (and I'm too lazy to go look), but I swear I first saw that when I was in early elementary school.

Good times.

So far, my pumpkin just has a set of the 3-D "I heart the 80s" glasses picked up from Best Buy. Yeah. It's a stylin', retro pumpkin.

And Coffin Joe has yet to be cued up. Just BtVS and "Beer Bad" which is quite possibly the worst episode in Buffydom.

I'm such a nerd.

Great job so far on the Saturday thread, Folks. Last week's mass hysteria appears to have abated -- much like the Salem fervor.

Keep care, 'Chucks.

PS -- Jedoc, there appears to be plenty of MDPB-II still in stores in MidMO. Let me know if you really want some!

Chestnuts roasted by Lisa Marie @ 10/22/2005 11:12 PM EST

I don't have cable. I don't WANT cable. I can live happily without "Rome" and "Lost," and there's enough interesting stuff on DVD and video that I'll probably never know the difference.

Thanks to now working in a larger grocery store (and having visited some that are even larger over the past few weeks), I've probably seen all of the Halloween cereals, including tonight's and the Monster Cereals. I hate cereal with marshmallows, so I probably won't be eating this, but I do like seeing festive cereals. They just add something to a holiday, a celebration in the breakfast eisle.

Haven't seen any Peeps, though. I DID see bean bag Peeps at Super Fresh, but they only had the candy pumpkins. No Cocoa Cats.

Tonight, I chat with a girlfriend, and then...bed, so I can handle my football-crazy customers in the morning.

Matt: Since you're the great finder of out of date food products, I was wondering if you've ever gotten a box of Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy?

Although I didn't buy any, Target had a bunch of $1 DVD's of old B&W sci-fi and horror films like "Atomic Vampires" and somesuch.

Batman vs. Dracula wasn't half bad. I may get the DVD when I find it cheap.

I tried those Jones Soda, I HATED Candy Corn, but liked the other 3.

The Enchanced version of Friday the 13th is on AMC tomorrow.

Me and my son carved pumpkins today. I really love the smell of pumpkin guts, not sure why. I also went to party city. They had halloween peeps, but no cocoa bats, which look really good.
Larry-
I also hold faith in SNL. I know most people say the first couple years were the best, buy not for me. My favorite time was with Sandler, Myers, Carvey, etc. I have to say I HATE Horatio Sans. I'm sure I spelled that wrong. He can't go though a scene without laughing, and he's not funny.

My favorite years were also the early 90s (mainly because I never really saw much of the first 13 or so years thanx to syndication on Comedy Central & E!)

I'm mostly watching tonight's cause of Franz Ferdinand being the musical guest (they were just on and they kicked ass). That, and I havent really missed a new SNL since the 2001 season.

But I kinda like Horatio Sanz cause of 2 sketches:

1) Jarett's Room (where it was ok for them to laugh cause they were high)
2) Fiesta Politica (for some reason, him just saying "oooooooooh, Gareee!" just carcks me up)

And Tina Fey is back as the Weekend Update Anchor, which was filled by...Horatio.

"President Bush met with Bono earlier this week. Bono told Bush to support the poor countries, while the President urged Bono go get back together with Cher."

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 10/23/2005 12:09 AM EST

SNL...I forgive the last six or seven seasons because of one sketch...

It was called "Key Party," and it was completely off the wall. It was a about a room filled with about ten cast members, and each one had a weird name and a code word which would be used to halt the swingin' lovemaking. The entire sketch consisted of each person saying their name and their code word over and over again. Believe me, it's funnier than it sounds.

I hear ya. It had a rare sketch appearance by Tina as well as Horatio as a high-pitched woman.

And after everyone said their names & safety words enough times (all instigated by Horatio's character), they eventually go into an Orgy upstairs.

I love me some SNL!!

Would you like some 'champagne'?

The Sandler one that someone said yesterday: "I'm crazy blender-head! I got a blender...on my head. Now gimmee some candy!"

Horatio is funny as hell, I love it when him and Jimmy Fallon would always crack up when they would look at each other.

I like de Mango, and de Matt Damon, but not de Ben Who-Fleck!

I find it funny that Damon Wayans was an SNL cast member.

I think, besides the original cast, that the years with Carvey, Hartman, Nealon, Jan Hooks, Melanie Huxell, and Victoria Jackson (she was in "UHF" and "Dream a Little Dream"!!) were the best. The early Sandler years, when the "bad boys" came on, those were good too. I like Tim Meadows.

I don't like the cinnamon fad in cereals. Just Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Damn. huh, I'll shut up now.

I got those Apple Jacks a couple weeks ago. They're pretty good - I'm not a huge fan of the 'Jacks to begin with, but I like what they've done with them. The whole cinnimon flavor is a little too intense or something for my palate. I kept the stickers around for a while in case I had an epiphany for where to use them, but alas, I gave up and threw them away. Somewhere in a landfill there's a glowing bad apple sticker that's slowly decomposing. Sorry.

On another note, not to question the man behind the proverbial X-E curtain, but weren't there supposed to be other X-E art-type contests before all-hallows eve? There's only 8 more days left and no contest in sight....

I was glad to read this article since about two weeks ago my mom bought the Apple Jacks, the Cocoa Krispies, and the Fruit Loops.

Normally I woul hate that. Really really hate that, but when coming from a 1/2 inch cinnamon marshmallow, it actually produced something resembling a laugh from me. It's not something that would make me laugh hearing it again, but still, it was good chuckle and I appreciate Apple Jacks all the more for it.

In related news, My Chemical Romance give a nice bit of panache to Astro Zombies on that Tony Hawk video game soundtrack thingee. I still prefer The Ataris' version, but hey this one makes me want to do jazz hand movements, so I give it a thumbs up.

I think it just means they do their "Pop-Up Video"-type thing. It also means the movie is shown in widescreen, while the "regular" showing is in pan-and-scan (I think). As far as I know, they always edit for offensive content.

Monte- They don't always edit for offensive content. On veterans day a certain channel (I can't remember which one) plays Saving Private Ryan unedited. Though last year they didn't play it. You wouldn't want to upset those people who think that the holocaust was a Jewish lie and those who can't change the chanel if something inapropriate comes on but don't want their children exposed to that kind of stuff. And the PETA people! Isn't there a dead cow in the background of one scene? Maybe that was Band of Brothers but you X-E's get my point. Galloping Gotals :o

A Muppet Family Christmas

Holy crap, I actually remembered that I taped that so many years ago!

That was the special where Fozzie visits his mom for christmas at his childhood farmhouse and all of the other muppets (from Muppet Show, Sesame St AND Fraggle Rock) apparantly stalked him going there. I vaguely remember it, as I haven't watched it in years, but I do remember this:

On the tape, the movie had an ad for Croonchy Stars on it.

All this time I've been trying to figure out what the title of that xmas special was, thank you Matt(#2?)!

So you finally took note of Apple Jacks' new advertising campaign, eh, Matt? Y'know, I myself freakin' hate that stupid CinnaMon character. Not only does he convince kids that cinnamon's better for them than apples by always winning against "Bad" Apple (who probably isn't really as bad as his name suggests), he is an advocate for bad vocabulary. The rhyme "The sweet taste of cinnamon/Is the winna, mon," really translates as "...Is the winner, man," which doesn't rhyme. Bad Apple should be the one winning those races; he's the one in the cereal's name, anyway!

Before you pick up the MUPPET FAMILY CHRISTMAS DVD, be aware that it is an edited version. Click my name for more details. I taped it off NICKELODEON (unedited) about 8 years ago. It is a personal favorite.
On another topic, we can't lose focus right before the big day. Everybody is getting into Christmas mode while Halloween has already been forgotten!! Wait until AT LEAST November 1st THEN put up your green and red, man.

My mom has a truly unhealthy preoccupation with Christmas and Christmas decorations. It got to the point where we basically had to stage an intervention. Result: a strictly-enforced law against Santa figurines, Christmas music, brightly-colored lights, and ANY form of tinsel until after Thanksgiving dinner. Therefore, all pre-November Christmas shenanigans strike me as even worse than they probably are.
That said: "A Muppet Family Christmas" is a shining high point of human achievement.
Watch out for that icy patch.
