I (and I am sure many others) love the early articles. I think many of us stumbled on XE via random Google searches which led us to this site. True, the writing has matured, but some of my favorite things here came 3-5 years ago.
And that video was beautiful.

I never had one of these, but one of my friends had one called 'Slobster'. I wouldn't have remembered it this long at all if it wasn't for the fact that one day he wore it to school a couple of years later sewn to a red baseball cap for 'Silly Hat Day'. I don't remember what silly hat I was wearing.. just that his put mine to shame.

In celebration of the ICY 70 degree weather (Dear Texas: you suck and I hate you) I bought my first box of apple cider for the season. So I've been sitting under my A/C vent, drinking cider and pretending it's actually autumn.
Listen, I'm going to level with you. This place is killing me slowly. Look out your window. Are the leaves on the trees some color other than green? And, if so, can I crash on your couch? I'm clean and quiet, and I am willing to bring with me the entire Booberry stock of my local Walmart.

I mentioned this awhile back but most of the BOGLIN auctions I have seen on ebay are from the UK. I am not sure why that is. I never had one but I have always wanted one. I have made due with the FIRE AND ICE DRAGON puppet for now (Clicka the name).
We have BOO BERRY, FRANKENBERRY, and the Count down here plus SCOOBY DOO'S SCARY BONE cereal which is very good too.

My brother had a Boglin when we were younger. The rubber that was used to fabricate those goddamned things was the most foul-smelling substance ever. It smelled so bad that my bro and I looked all over the much balleyhooed cage-shaped box to see if the used-eighteen-times-condom-smell was intentional and perhaps one of the Boglin's selling points.
Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 10/10/2005 10:40 PM EST

Wal-Mart had a ton of Chocula, Booberry, and Frankenberry, although only Chocula was in the official Halloween cereal aisle. I think they should do a limited edition of Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy for all of us who've heard of but never tried them.
Also, I spotted some candy based on "It's a Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" there but didn't buy any. Also had Halloween Corn Chips.
LOVED the video.

My only abiding memory of Boglins was that in a long-gone convenience store of my youth, they had a bunch of ostensibly for sale, unpackaged toys hanging up behind the counter. There was a dark blue-colored Boglin right in the center, which stayed there right up to the store's closing, and which I always desired, but never got.

I've been reading X-E for about two years now and I've never posted any comments on the blog before, but I suddenly realized I should, because I too have noticed that there is a major lack of cool Halloween stuff in the stores today.
I'm doing my part to fix this by decorating the Hollywood Video store I work in with tons of cobwebs, cheap plastic skeletons, and rubber insects. I also make sure to play "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" at least once a day on the big in-store TV.
Thank you, Matt...you always inspire me to celebrate and enjoy life!

Kidneyboy, yeah TARGET has Magnum P.I., Miami Vice, Daisy Duke (the Catherine Bach one), and a handful of other retro costumes. I don't know, I think the Magnum P.I. is a little too "hey, check it out, guess who I am. That's right, MAGNUM P.I.!".
From the last thread: I can report that in Florida it was Lionel Play World instead of Kiddie Land.
Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 10/11/2005 05:31 AM EST
There I was. I was a little boy in the eighties. I was obsessed with anything monster. Halloween was my special time.
As all little boys, I loved toys. action figures of course, but I still hadn't grown out of stuffed animals n such.
I knew about boglins and wanted one so very badly. They were a my buddy for me. A cool ass puppet with a design and exicution that I haven't really seen even today. And they were creepy. I could surely scare my sister with this. Hell, my mom even.
Alas we didn't have much money, never did but I got along fine anyway (being somewhat of an idiot when it came to where things came from) as cast offs from goodwill or garage sales often did the trick.
But boglins were new. Maybe the one kid down the block that nobody knew well for some reason had one, I cant quite remember, but if he had, I wouldn't have been able to glory in it anyhow.
So there I am in autumn, walking down what I recal as a not so well lit hallway in some department store. Walking down an isle ahead of my mom so as to have ample stopping time to look at anything that took my intrest as we couldn't stop to look at every little thing I wanted to look at.
There it was. I couldn't belive it. I wasted precious looky time afraid to even approach the display, thinking they might cease to exist if I approached closer.
Mom nearing, I made my way hastily over. Boglins. Halloween HALLOWEEN boglins. I picked up Blobkin, my obvious favourite (skulls are cool and defenately awesome, but Jack o'lanterns are only Halloween, my day) and gloried in him. I picked up and gloried in Bog o Bones so he wouldn't feel bad or neglected (and to make sure of my choice, already knowing I was sure) and took in every detail of my prescious find.
I couldn't belive I had found this. I couldn't belive the company that made these things would make this. Surely it was just for me.
I did a quick check, was this a dream? (I often had/have dreams of the perfect toy find only to wake up and have it be a total dream. How I still long for the 15 car train transformer with each car becoming a robot AND all adding together to become the biggest transformer of them all, plus the cartoon commercial it came with...ah bastard dreams)
Anyway, I knew I must have it, more than anything I ever wanted before. I looked to mom, oh she was on me already (and past come to think of it, I always had a 15 foot pass and catch up space or so)
"Mom, I ..."
"No, c'mon Damon, not today"
"No, you don't understand, this.."
"Not today Damon, maybe later"
"But..."
She kept walking. I didn't know what to do. I had to have it. She was 20 feet away...30 Ah crap.
I did the look at mom at the toy back and forth dance you do when you cant bare to set something down but know you don't want to chance losing sight of your parents.
I set it down and promised,
"I promis Blobkin, I will come back for you. I swear I will get you somehow. You are mine by right."
I never got Blobkin. I went back, what, a week later. Gone. I asked every toy person I saw for two years if they were comming back. Two empty halloweens for me.
That turned into, what, 20 years of missed oportunity?
It has become the one thing from my childhood that I never got over not getting.
The orriginal reason I found X-Entertainment (awesome place where everything I loved is still alive) was a search engine result for Boglins.
Thanks to Matt I know that others remember that beautiful little beast from that long ago day. I am not alone (though quite possibly the most obsessed) in my memory of Blobkin and his brother.
Though Matt's orriginal article didn't mention the Halloween brand nearly enough (for me) this article makes up for it. I am heartily thankful that the article I really had come for has finally been written. Thank you matt profusly.
I never have gotten that boglin. I don't know how this ebay really works. I don't think I can order things online anyway, no credit card or something. If I did order somethin online god knows If I could rationalize spending whatever outragous price he would be. But At least I have the hope that Blobkin may still be out there for me to fulfill my promise to, though years later and maybe a little worse for the ware.
I'm not sure why this little guy has ment so much to me, but I love 'em. Matt, I know that you know what I mean.
Happy Halloween people.

I saw Magnum P.I. at Target yesterday too. If I remember correctly: it's a hat emblazoned with Magnum P.I., a mustache, and either a Hawaiian shirt or a lei. I was too distracted because I (finally) found the creme-filled Halloween Peeps pumpkins. Still no sign of cocoa cats in my area anywhere.

The closest thing I have to a toy I never got over not getting was Barbie Loves McDonald's. It was my answer in that thread about what you would buy if you had a time machine. However, what was more painful was the Christmas that I really wanted Dixie's Diner. I saw it in the JCPenney Christmas Catalog (on the same page as the Pee-Wee's Playhouse Set, which is what made me think of it.) It was so neat - a perfect little diner with excellent detail. You could buy a formica-looking counter, booths, a pool table, a light-up jukebox...I looked at that catalog almost every day and pined for it. As was the case with most kids, it was one on a list of several things I wanted. Well, deciding they couldn't get me everything I wanted (what parent can?) they bought me some things off of my list and thought the diner would be a cute thing for my little sister. Oh the pain... She promptly lost nearly all the pieces and broke off parts of the diner. What didn't get broken got scratched or messed up in some way before being thrown in the closet and forgotten. It hurts even now just to think about it. The few you can find on eBay are way too pricey for me to justify their purchase. If only I had made it more clear that I wanted that diner more than anything else on the list. If only...

That is why god invented the asterisk system. Things on a gift list at normal priority level are left without an asterisk. Things you really want get an asterisk. Things you really, really want get two asterisks. Things you NEED get sixty-two asterisks.

Like 8 years ago I managed to snag a Bog-O-Bones & a Blobkin complete with their cages (& one had the trick-or-treat bag, I gotta see if I have it).
My cousin got the Blobkin & I got the Bog-O-Bones. I'll need to bust Bog-O-Bones out for Halloween, cause that day is what he was made for.
Hey, has anyone ever managed to capture the Boglins commerical on Video? o_O? In all the years since they've come out, it's one of the few toy comericals I've never saw.

Jeez, Matt, you had the pervert in me (who also kept scrolling back up to see Scott Valentine's pubes in the review of "My Demon Lover"
prepared to see some X-rated soda-sex video, but, instead, I got treated to 20 seconds of a Boglin puppet. But that's ok--the music redeemed it. That was funny.
I remember those Boglins, though not in detail.
Lori, I can't help but feel your pain about "Dixie's Diner." Although this experience never happened to me, it hurts.
Kidneyboy, definitely report on the fun crap you get your hands on at the Surplus store!!!!! I can't wait to hear it!!
I was in Target on Sunday--didn't go looking for that Magnum PI costume though.
I got my iPod Nano on Sunday, which is my early Christmas present. I got it early, and good thing I did--when I got to Best Buy, they only had the 2 GB(500 songs) version, and only in white!!! I downloaded 122 songs so far. I may download the last Dennis Miller book into it, since it is only on CD and not in print (I own all his other books, as well as a RARE 1990 stand-up video "Black and White," which was literally filmed in B & W, the Off-White Album on CD, and "Live from Washington DC" from 1993 on DVD. I asked for "The Raw Feed" on DVD for Birthday (Oct. 19)/Graduation (Dec. 18)/Christmas. You tell me I don't have quite a collection.)
I really want Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix for Game Cube for christmas this year. I got the GC in January, and I have the Mad Catz MC Grooves Dance Mat and game, but I gotta have the Mario game, although it requires a compatible mat. Dammit, I don't want the second mat, but my current one is ONLY compatible with the other dancing game. I even tried playing Sonic Advance 2 on the Mad Catz mat--there's an experience!

Dixie's Diner...oh my goodness, I had that! Except...for some reason, I don't really remember the diner having much furniture...but it did have tiny plates and silverware which ended up getting lost on the first day (I know it).
And I believe that one was a Lionel Kiddie City purchase... Kiddie City was kind of far away so we didn't go there often. We always went to the Toys R' Us in Tyson's Corner, VA; that place was like our holy land.
Hmm...Boglins. You know, I'm pretty sure we had one of these- I vaguely remember seeing one around, like our Snugglebumms. I don't really remember buying them or anything- they were just always "there".

Fast fact: Did you know the Smurfs were created in 1958 as comic book characters in Belgium?
Yes I did, and that the guy who drew it was named Peyo, and his family gave the OK for Unicef to make that ad. That pic is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. I wonder what the real ad is like.
Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 10/12/2005 02:35 PM EST
Great timing, Allison. Now seeing that ad, it really IS the most disturbing thing I've ever watched, it made the Burger King stuff seem normal!!
Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 10/12/2005 02:39 PM EST
Gargamel has really upped the ol' smurf attack, huh? I can't help but think that they could have used the boglins in those "horror" movies in the 80's.
Chestnuts roasted by bloodybrilliantme @ 10/12/2005 02:53 PM EST
Jurassic Park toys sucked . . . mainly because they had nothing to do with the movies and even featured dinos not in the films!

What's next, using the G'nap as a biological weapon?
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 10/12/2005 02:59 PM EST
I've been waiting for actual moving footage of the Smurf ad to show up...gawd bless the internet. I can see Smurfs being firebombed, Boglins grooving to shitkickin' tuneage or f'n sweet footage of Mt. Dew being poured whenever I want...what a country!
Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 10/12/2005 03:00 PM EST
Wow. Can you imagine being a little kid and that being your first Smurf sighting. How will the Smurfs ever have a successful re-issue if that commercial is a whole generations introduction to the cartoon?
For the record.... I would've liked it more if Gargamel piloted the plane that dropped the bombs. With that Cat of his dressed up in Red Barron attire and co-piloting.
Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 10/12/2005 04:50 PM EST
Those Smurfs are dirty commies and they had it coming to them. Take that, Karl Marx!
USA! USA! USA!
Aw, forget it....
Chestnuts roasted by The Wukong Effect @ 10/12/2005 05:42 PM EST
I'm pretty sure the commercial won't actually be airing in the USA during real ad breaks...I'd guess it'll just show up on the news. In Belgium the Smurfs never really disappeared so it's probably not going to be seen by kids unfamiliar with them...besides it's only supposed to air later at night so I don't worry that it'l be traumatizing toddlers.

Ah ha! I never saw your original write up on Boglins until you just mentioned the Halloween one. But I must thank you from the bottom of my blackened spookfilled heart that you have answered my question of just what the hell kind of puppet I once had in the bottom of my toy chest. I had one of these things and I played with it all of the time. I remember being creeped out by just how life like they looked and felt. Truly remarkable little things, Boglins.
Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Madman @ 10/12/2005 07:43 PM EST
Carri, to answer your question, they're actually planning to make a Smurfs movie set for release in 2007. For a planned Trilogy. Go, please kill me. Anyway, MAtt, you mentioned in the article tnat most peopledon't want articles on obscure toys anymore. SO, is that why your article on Super-Naturals apparent never got put on the site. Or are you just lazy? I think I am in the minority when I say this, but I really want you to do more of those articles on obscure toys.
And, speaking of Boglins, God I wish I lived in the 80s just so I could play with one of those.
Chestnuts roasted by TOM @ 10/12/2005 09:40 PM EST
The Smurfs movies are tied to Nick somehow, so with any luck I'll get to meet my destiny and make a fucking Smurfs commercial.
TOM, I will be covering (or should say, covering again) several of the lines as time goes on.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/12/2005 09:41 PM EST
Wow, matt that video was hawtt.
I might need to donate a lil' something.

Chestnuts roasted by Yelinna @ 10/13/2005 01:21 AM EST
I heard about the Smurfs movie. Matt, I'll anxiously await the day you get to do some commercial for the smurfs.
That cat, by the way, is Azrael. I always can find something irrelevant to inject here.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed that rather interesting commercial. And I'm also glad I wasnt the only one who knew that they were created in 1958.
Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 10/13/2005 03:42 PM EST
that was the best movie ever.
why am I writing this at 4am?

Hey Fangs, why ARE you writing this at 4am???????
Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 10/14/2005 02:29 PM EST
I've had a Boglin for years that I got for free at a yard sale (The woman REALLY wanted to get rid of it) and I wanted to know what it was since then. This article helped me figure it out. Thanks
Chestnuts roasted by Radio @ 10/15/2005 10:02 AM EST
Come on now...admit it... you devoted X-E FREAKS wanted to see Matt get naked and screw a 3. litre bottle of pepsi.
That is hardcore just to mention Matt, a 3. litre pepsi would have a huge cap and the angle of the bottle neck would be like...... omG enough is enough..
Nice puppetry dude! Someday we should smoke a few bowls and play Boglins, afterall, i live near you
rock on, crescent fresh

AWESOME! I just found one of my boglins...one of the non-deluxe types, the little purple dude...out of the box, yet in pristine shape. I showed it to my 2yr old son, who promptly ran away screaming...hehehe.....I LOVE having grown up through the 80s
We had the COOLEST stuff.

I loved these things, I worked at the Pictorium at Great America in Santa Clara, CA, and had to make a spiel about the show and safety, and whatever, but the whole thing was done in a spotlight. There was a balcony you had to stand in front of, and it only took a day before someone was hiding in the shadows making the speech and we took turns holding up the Boglin over the balcony to make the speech. Never got busted, my Boglin buddy got ripped from my car! Criminals love them too!
Chestnuts roasted by stevicus @ 10/18/2005 07:20 AM EST
omigod...you have a lot of time on your hands. on the other hand, i not only read your boglins piece--entertaining, AND i'd forgotten all about these till now--i also took the time to post a comment. so...um...good job
Chestnuts roasted by april @ 10/19/2005 01:02 AM EST
I've actually got somethin' kinda exciting in Boglin related news. A few years back I was a Colour Co-Ordinator (read as poorly paid painter) for Bluebird toys and one of the lines we worked on before Mattel bought out the company was Boglins. Now obviously Boglins are made of latex or possbly some cheap rubber, but the ones I spent time on were made of resin. I have photographs of the finished colour schemes somewhere I'm sure so I was thinking that next time I was in my hometown I would root through my old stuff at my folks house and see if the photographs still exist.
Because they were resin, I had to tape toilet paper to my hand to stop the flash on the inside of them tearing my hands to ribbons. Plus, the weighed a ton. They were slightly different looking to the originals but one of them was a sort of fish / boglin hybrid, rather than the Boglin cousins.

I always loved Halloween Boglins. Thanks for the link. I enjoyed the video clip also.
