Okay I was going to take you to task for disparaging the original article, but "Painting its wearers more as unhip losers than creatures of dark intrigue, I doubt even 600-pound goth chicks who paint Celtic Ankhs on their nails would accept a date offer from me with this thing on" is such a gem I can't argue the rewrite.
(ps: Congrats on your little one, IHAQ!)

As long as there is no secret message from Vlad telling you to drink your ovaltine, you can at least pretend it's semi-authentic.

Who could resist cracking that coffin open? The dirt looks like that ultra-fine sand that comes in the bottom of those pit/pendulum things. . . you know, the pendulums make designs in the sand? Anyway, just thinking of touching that is getting me all geeked up inside. I couldn't be trusted with that amulet.

This is cool.
The only thing that would be more cool is if they sold amulets that contained bat guano, allegedly appropriated from Dracula in bat form.
That would rock hard.

My favorite ep. of Are You Afraid of the Dark is the one with Zeebo the clown. It was the only one that was somewhat genuinely scary. I mean a clown who hunts you down in your house so you can give him his fake nose back? I can still hear the creepy voice...."GEEEEEV EEEEEEET BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!" i think i'm gonna wet myself!!!!!!!!
Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 10/04/2005 12:14 AM EST
Are You Afraid of the Dark was either really, really good or really, really crappy. Very rarely was there an in between.
Of course, my favorite was the one with the Leprechaun. Magical Midgets Battling Ancient Demons= Ratings

I just got back from seeing an old horror double-header at The Pioneer in East Village. It was Horror Hotel from 1959 followed by the original House On Haunted Hill. I have to say, for a movie from the 50's, Horror Hotel was impressively satanic and a pleasant surprise. It also starred Christopher Lee, so it's A+ all the way.

One year ago on the countdown, that Growing Pains episode...which made me think "Wasn't Jeremy Whatzisface the one who turned out gay and made the talk show circuit when he grew up? No wait, that was the OTHER blonde kid on an ABC sitcom, the one from Who's The Boss."
Then I start thinking how much I wanted to (and still want to) screw Alyssa Milano's brains out. Good times.

I sincerely doubt the dirt's authentic. There's no way to prove that it isn't (even if someone did, so what?), and just packing in whatever dirt was handy would've been a hell of a lot cheaper.
Chestnuts roasted by RewolfJ @ 10/04/2005 03:46 AM EST

As nice as it would be to carry the Draculian dirt around my neck, I'm sorry to say it's not as cool as those shrimp people things. You know, the ones you'd find on similar ads on old magazines. Can't remember what they were called though.
If memory serves me right, I think Matty might of written an article about those shrimp people.

Chestnuts roasted by james anthony ktu @ 10/04/2005 10:33 AM EST
The problem is, the only people that would have thought something like that was cool were the people reading those magazines, so you couldn't even impress them because they'd know you'd just bought it off of a magazine cover. You'd think they could have tried to make it look VAGUELY like the picture though.

It's an emergency supply of Dracula's Transylvanian Hot Cocoa Mix, now with Spooooooky Tombstone Marshmallows! See the "D" on the label? It stands for DRA-KOO-LAH, whose Hot Cocoa Mix this is!
"Children of the night, such music they make, especially when I'm about to serve my Transylvanian Hot Cocoa! Even Renfield loves it. Right, Renfield?"
"Yes, Master. I like mine with a handful of flies!"
"Of course you do. Count Dracula's Transylvanian Hot Cocoa Mix, from X-Entertainment Enterprises. Satisfaction Guaranteed, or your money Bat! Vampires may suck, my cocoa doesn't!"
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 10/04/2005 12:18 PM EST
I'm peeved that the ad makes it appear that the amulet is a nice little glass-and-metal concoction, but what you actually get is cheesy plastic. I got screwed by many such magazine scams back in the daze-O-my-yoof.
I also chuckled when I saw that the serial number on the COA contains a question mark.

Hmmm... Even if I was a fully paid-up member of the Dracula fanclub, I'm not sure an amulet of his soil would do much to get me excited. The dust from his centuries-old corpse? Count me in. The dirt from his flowerbed? I think I'll pass.
Chestnuts roasted by Ginrai @ 10/04/2005 12:49 PM EST
That could've been the coolest thing ever if the gold chain wasn't...a plastic gumball machine coil, and if the coffin amulet wasn't plastic too.
Imagine a thin, dark gold chain with a dark cold metal coffin, containing the soil. Totally awesome!
Considering you didn't get that, I'd say you got ripped off! Also if you ever do break the thing open, you have to report back and say if it was indeed dirt! My guess is it's just dirt from outside their office.

I love how it is from "Rumania"? what's the matter? Is there a copyright violation by printing Dracula's origins in "Romania"????

I've decided to ressurect this product. I just got a load of dirt dumped in my yard the other day to help fill in some holes from some work the city was doing, and there's a fair bit left over.
I don't know where that dirt came from. For all I know, it's 100% pure Rumanian dirt. So that's what I'm going with.
Now all I need is some chains and GLASS coffin containers, and I will be the new great American success story.

If X-E was a TV show, I figure it'd a mixup of Robot Chicken, Amazon Women on the Moon, Kentucky Fried Movie, Nick Arcade, YCDTOTV, Entertainment Tonight, The Tick, and one of those local kid shows where you call in and say "pow" to make a video game shoot at aliens that were around in the late 70's. Because I'm bored and haven't got much else to say about Dracula at the moment, I feel like sharing my favorite (recent) catchphrases that have colored my conversation lately:
"And the installation is freeeeee!" Jones, Reno 911!. This one gets a lot of rotation at the office. All it takes is one person singing it and we're all crooning the rest of the day.
"You've lost Rome!" Cato, Rome. Old dude hollering at some other old dude. This has totally become my go-to phrase of frustration...I just shout it to the heavens and it's better than Tai Chi.
"For British eyes only!" Arrested Development. Sure, it's no "I've made a huge mistake" or "I'm a MONSTER!" or even "With Club sauce" but it's sure fun to throw around.
Anybody got any other good ones?

on a more happy note, I was at the local public library, and went browsing through the discarded books for sale. Lo and behold, they were also getting rid of a movie that apparently no one checked out in a while. To my wide-eyed surprise, I happen to see Val Kilmer's smirking face on the front of the box...REAL GENIUS!!! The library didn't love it anymore, so I gave it a new home. And the best part? The price....wait for it......yep....it's coming......

I third the missing of trajeal. That phrase completely doesn't work, but I'm sure you all understand it.
phunqsauce, I just got back from Serenity and I'm far too tired to try to think of as many synonyms for the word "awesome" as I need to describe that movie. It completely kicks the ass of recent Star Wars endeavors IMHO (haha been waiting to use that one!). I can see how some people who have never seen the series would be a little lost in places, but that is because many people are simply stupid or just don't pay close attention in movies. The basic plot was easy to follow (Alliance, Reavers = Bad, crew = our heroes, good). The parts that I didn't completely understand only made me want to watch the show, so I will be buying Firefly on DVD sometime in the near future, once cash flow permits.
Chestnuts roasted by Gabbylicious @ 10/05/2005 02:46 AM EST

Sorry, I'm done now. I may be a bit biased as I'm already a Joss Whedon fan. If you didn't like his TV work, you probably won't enjoy the movie as much as I did. His work has certain characteristics.

Saw Serenity on Sunday. Will likely see it again this weekend. Oh, how I love that show. I'm taking someone who never watched the show on Friday but I have faith she will respond well.
In other news, we were watching something on G4tech tv (gaming channel) and they mentioned something about a new edition of A Boy and his Blob. Definitely something to look forward to.

the three most recent threads all have their margins broke...

Doho -- Thanks, I've fixed them. It's a problem that affects Firefox users, not IE users. I readily admit that Firefox is better than IE.
Also, it's another reminder for everyone to use proper tags when linking to other sites. Please do not paste super long links!

To reiterate, if you need to share a long url (meaning just about anything from ebay or amazon), you can:
a. learn to make a hyperlink with html (try webmonkey's html teaching tool)
b. use a website like tinyurl.com to shorten the address (not as hard as it might sound)
c. paste the url address into the "Homepage" field and just say "Click my name!"
Not a total cake walk, but not rocket science either. I'm usually surfing the blog with Blazer, where the stretched out pages aren't a problem, but I know how funky it gets in Firefox.

Road Block--I WILL never be the same again. I need to tell one of my friends about it, she'll be so shocked!!!!!
I got a job interview tomorrow for an office job at a company about a half-hour from my house. Dammit, I'm gonna have my B.A. in Communications in December, and the only work I can find is office work! It's good work though, until my true career shows up. Gotta keep looking!
See, what I really wanna do is record and edit professional projects. I send emails to recording studios, and one in Philly told me there weren't any job openings, but said to send my resume and a demo. I'm not much for impressions and stuff, but I wrote some of my own stuff and recorded it. I'm finishing that up, and will send it soon! You never know...
Wish me luck everyone!

Rumania is actually an archaic English spelling of Romania. You'll still see it in older books. So...who knows? Maybe it is indeed from the Carpathian Mountains, which are real, of course.
I certainly wouldn't believe that dirt has any special powers, but who knows. Does anyone here watch Inuyasha? That weird witch raised Kikyo from the dead with...soil from her grave.

Good luck.

Love it. I've seen so many of those ads, as my dad has about 200 issues of Creepy and Eerie comics spanning from mid 60s and on. I've always thought to myself, "I'll bet that things full of pixie stick powder... or kitty litter."
Fun stuff, and good article too.

James Warren should be known as he was the publisher/editor for Famous Monsters, Creepy, etc.
