10/01/2005 Entry: "Zathura killed X-E."

It's October, and yes, I missed Friday's entry. Was going to try to whip up one quick this morning, but I had whipping up ones quick. Whipping up ones quick sucks. Consider yesterday's non-entry a loan that I will make up for with an extra entry later. I gotta get to work on next week's shite.

Why'd I skip? Had to go to a screening for Zathura for a couple of work-related projects. I don't think I'm allowed to "review" the movie for like a month or something, but I will say that Sony impressed me by turning what would normally only be a dry screening event into a pizza party.

This is your surveyless Saturday thread -- surveyless because the previous thread seems to still be kickin' ass old school.

I bought Rocky Horror Picture Show on DVD and I'm checking out the commentary now. Way too excited to be watching a movie I've seen about 800 + times...I never did make it to a theater for the full experience, weirdly enough, but my old VHS version was pretty much in constant rotation in high school. I totally bought the DVD for myself as an "early Halloween present" which I never would have done before X-E.

My mom won't let me see the Rocky Horror Picture Showsad She says it's wrong and disturbing. I am so out of here when I turn 18. Snivvian sucker punch!

I wish I could go back in time and erase Tim Curry's existance. The man just creeps me out no matter what role he plays and I just don't think he's that funny...I dunno, maybe I just don't get...

I was Brad in the live cast at the Johns Hopkins Rocky Horror performances for 3 semesters (before we got caught with alcohol and couldn't perform that Spring... ironically, the party we had instead of a show that semester was the only place I've *ever* had alcohol). Great great fun...

Ooh and I've got a plane ticket to get me to B'more to see the new JHU cast perform on the 29th of October. Couldn't be more excited about that :-D

Oh, and I will say firmly: if you haven't seen it in a theater, or at least in a room full of people who have seen it in a theater and know some good call lines, you totally haven't seen the movie.

Making a post from work. Woo Hoo!
Anyways, the thing I remember from Halloween was the electric and warm feelin of Fall. Something about the season always strikes an emotional string in my being. It's a warm, friendly feeling that reminds me of coming home after school, crunching orange and red leaves with my sneakers in anticipation of whatever warm dinnner mom would cook up. Hopefully, whatever Halloween it was, I wouldn't have to wear a coat over my costume >sad That always sucked when I had to do that.
Then, it was going out with my friends and rounding the neighbourhood to gather all the candy we could, plus the usual toothbrush from the dentist's house (go figga).
The next day would be the usual trading of candy during lunch hour. It was a great time.
It sucks to grow up. It really does.

Mike, I know a moderate number of the callback responses because I've heard the album with a recording of an audience participating. The great thing about this DVD is that there's a subtitle option to prompt the callbacks. Haven't checked it out yet but I think it's a great special feature. I had friends who went to midnight shows all the time but somehow never mustered the ambition to go. My mom also was discouraging of my attending, but that wouldn't have stopped me big grin I'll make it some day, but I think I'll cheat and deny my 'virginity'.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 10/01/2005 02:48 PM EST

Someone tried to trick me into going to a midnight showing once. thank god i didn't into their trap. I heard about all the silly things they do to "virgins" and i wanted no part of it and besides I absolutely despise RHPS. it was a heavy sigh of relief.

At the website above they started their second annual "31 Years, 31 Screams" horror movie reviews. A horror film is reviewed daily. It's cool.

Chestnuts roasted by Zorkporker @ 10/01/2005 03:39 PM EST

phung, I can see not liking RHPS but hating on Tim Curry? That's just nuts.
In addition to the audience prompting subtitles, there's a commentary track with a real audience shouting all over themselves...I'm listening now and must admit I prefer the movie on it's own.

P.S. sorry for the double post but i saw a trailer for the Doom movie when I went to see Serenity on Thursday night. It even lowered my low view of the movie. Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Repeat ad naseum.

When are they gonna get off their butts and make Josie in OuterSpace a reality? I mean the girls have been doing well since then (e.g., Shattered Glass, Van Wilder, Stateside, etc.) but we all need the sequel especially Alan (I mean c'mon Son of Mask?). You don't even need a trilogy. Just do OuterSpace and call it quits. Unless there was a third series of the comics/cartoons. I honestly dunno. I should. If they're on DVD I think I'm going to have to buy them. But on the same note, I haven't bought all the Letters to Cleo albums as I had planned. I am working on getting all of Rachael's movies, so I'm not a total failure big grin

This wicked world
Searchin for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walk on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

cause each time I feel it slippin away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
What's so funny bout peace love & understanding?

CBS
Muppet Babies

Getalong Gang
Dungeons and Dragons

NBC
Snorks
Pink Panther and Sons

"Pryor's Place"? I'll have to be on the lookout for "Lenny Bruce's Funtime Playhouse" now.

I have no idea what I'd put in a lineup. I know I'd want "Real Ghostbusters." I don't think that old (and rather odd) early-'90s "Beetlejuice" cartoon has been mentioned, so I'll throw that up there too.

I'm not going to list my shows because I'm the obsessive type that would sit and work on my list for three days without pause for food or rest with nothing to show for it but a fictional line-up and some stanky trousers.

Regardless of my self-impossed exclusion from this fun, I have a question for the Saturday morning fans: my friend and I have had a number of vague discussions about a show that we hardly remember. It was a live action, ABC affair with humans that lived in a land of Animatronic dinosaurs. Any ideas, kids?

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 10/02/2005 01:57 AM EST

Tougi- Land of the lost maybe?

Chestnuts roasted by D-Roc @ 10/02/2005 02:07 AM EST

I believe you are thinking of the 1991 version of "Land of the Lost."

That's all that comes to mind anyway.

Chestnuts roasted by Monte @ 10/02/2005 02:07 AM EST

I'm going to say my entire saturday morning consist of nothing but Pokemon, if for no other reason but to protest the fact that no one has put it in their list. I don't care if I was well over the demographic age range when it came out. That show made saturday mornings worth it again.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 10/02/2005 02:14 AM EST

Land of the Lost had 2 kids, and the Dad. I never watched the newer one, really, but I looooooved the old one. The Sleestacks were so awesome, even though they scared me. And I loved it when they went inside of those golden pyramid thingies with the glowing gem buttons big grin

I have to add Sigmund the Seamonster to my Sat. morning lineup! I totally forgot about that until LotL was mentioned! I'll add that too smile

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 10/02/2005 02:19 AM EST

Good call on Beetlejuice, Monte. I'd also have Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Pee-Wee, Muppet Babies and Rocko in my lineup. I have very fond memories of Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates (pretty sure that's the name). I also really liked these toons they used to air on Nick that were adaptations, I remember them doing Rikki Tikki Tavi and The White Seal. Maybe those were the only ones they did, I can't remember.
I hate Saturdays when all you can think about is Monday.

So I just did a search for "Land of the Lost" and was sent to IMDB. Apparently there was a character named "Stink." Any show with Stink as a regular is sure to be good. Unfortunately, I have some low-level doubts about the accuracy of the statement. While IMDB doesn't usually steer me wrong, there is a review which features the word (for lack of better term) "orriginal" four times.

anybody else getting hot hearing Vegan Mike and Ryane set up their date? ....mmmm, me neither. But it seems nice!

Why didn't anyone mention Captain Caveman or Turbo Teen? I liked those shows.

For shame to all the people putting mature cartoons on their lists. For shame.

This is my list:

6:00 am - Popcorn
(was a show locally on the ABC affiliate early in the morning. Kinda like zoom, with kids making recipes and the like, but had movie reviews too. I remember them rating the movie reviews with the size of the bag of popcorn)
6:30 am - smurfs

7:00 am - Captain Planet
we are planeteers, you can be one too, saving out planet is the thing to do, poluting and poluting is not the way, hear what captain planet has to say 'the power is YOURS!!' I'LL GET YOU CAPTAIN PLANET!!! (insert DIC animation here)
7:30 captain N

8:00 super mario bros
8:30 am - Garfield and friends

9:00 am - Ernest show meantioned above
9:30 am - pee wee's playhouse (I was about 11 when he was busted, I didn't know exactly what he did but I knew he did 'adult stuff' he shouldn't of done in a theatre, close enough, connect the dots, la la la la, connect the dots la la la la, hey! I still sing that sometimes!!)

10:00 am - muppet babies
10:30 am - O.G. readmore

11:00 am - alvin and the chipmunks followed by chipmunks go to the movies

go to and come back from commericals with the appropriate PSA's and schoolhouse rock cartoons. Oh yeah!! big grin

noon - Ramblin Rod (a local portland show, the late 'Ramblin' Rod' had a long vest with buttons all over it people gave him, dealt with brats sitting on a wall of bleachers, he came out on a train and played tom and jerry, and other short cartoons, also had a birthday part where the kids would stand in a line, while they would say their names where from, and ages, and then he would read the list, (honorable mentions type of list) and one of them would get a voucher for a free dairy queen ice cream cake, I was always so fuckin jealous of them, I wanted a free b-day cake!! he would have a rodeo show too annually)

start the reruns that play after cartoons!! Family matters, bosom buddies, step by step, full house, blossom, Charles in Charge, home improvement etc. They used to play an 70's-80's ish psa type of 30 min show before a dated movie after cartoons for a while. There was this one when this guy got into a car accident because he was drinking at a prom party. Hmmm, makes ya think razz

anyway, I'm going to bed. Wish me luck lol.

Hello. Longtime reader (site and blog/comments), first time poster. Had to come out of my shell for this.

6:00 Scooby Doo (any version)
6:30 Muppet Babies
7:00 Gummi Bears
7:30 DUcktales
8:00 Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers
8:30 Talespin
9:00 Darkwing Duck
9:30 Garfield & Friends
10:00 Pee-wee's Playhouse
10:30 The Ren & Stimpy Show
11:00 Rocko's Modern Life
11:30 Saved By the Bell

I am a firm advocate in the return of the Disney Afternoon, I suppose.

I almost added NBC's Saved By The Bell-type show called Hang Time, just because it was cheesy to the maxxxx. Also, I left a lot of Nickelodeon untapped because of the space constraint--it pains me not to have Nick Arcade at the top of that list.

Chestnuts roasted by Teerocks @ 10/02/2005 07:39 AM EST

And Tougi--Stink was, by far, the best part of the Land Of The Lost remake. He was like a bizarre half-breed of the trolls from Willow and Jar Jar Binks, and I loved him when I was a kid.

I'm glad to see that so many people have posted their ideas. And now, MY ideal Saturday Morning.

6:00- DinoSaucers
6:30- Super Mario Bros Super Show
7:00- Captain Planet
7:30- Super Mario Bros. 3
8:00- DuckTales
8:30- Aladdin
9:00- The Real Ghostbusters
9:30- Transformers
10:00- Ghostbusters Extreme
10:30- Samurai Pizza Cats
11:00- Muppet Babies
11:30- Inspector Gadget
12:00- Video & Arcade Top 10

Video & Arcade Top 10 was a local show on YTV. It had 4 kids competing against each other in video games for assorted prizes, including a copy of the game they were playing. They also had the "Prize Wall", with assorted other stuff that the winner would get a chance at if he drew the right ball out of a trashcan, or whatever he wanted if he got the Red Bonus Ball. In all the years I watched, I never saw anyone get the bonus ball. And what's even more amazing is that it's still going, after 14 years at least, it's still going.

While the list up there is a great deal of what I want in Saturday Morning Programming, it isn't quite perfect unless I get up before everyone else, sneak down to the kitchen and grab all of the leftover pizza(The homemade stuff my mom used to make was the best).

Shows that were considered, but left out:
Droids
My Pet Monster
Beetlejuice
Bugs Bunny & Tweety
Dungeons & Dragons
BraveStarr
Garfield & Friends

Chestnuts roasted by DocDragon @ 10/02/2005 12:20 PM EST

6:00-Home Movies
6:30-Muppet Babies
7:00-Thunder Cats
7:30-Swat Kats
8:00-Original He-Man
8:30-G.i. Joe (a real American Hero or what ever)
9:00-Pirates of Dark Water
9:30-Clone Wars (1 episode)
9:35 to 10 filled with random toons
10:00-RoboTech
10:30-Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (that will go until 12:30)
So there you have it you Popo. That's german for bottom or rear end. Ha Ha Ha LOL! smile

Just got back from Target and got ahold of 3 out of 4 Halloween Jones Sodas (No Strawberry Slime, but tons of the other 3). I'll tell you guys what I thought of them later.

Also went to Toys R Us (been seeing Geoffrey's Birthday ads). Other than DVD's, nothing spectacular at all. I found that Target has been suiting my toy needs also.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 10/02/2005 02:29 PM EST

Target is basically the only place that I go to get action figures and other toys meant for kids less than half my age. Admiting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. I'm not sure what the other steps are. The only star wars action figures that my target has left are Nemoidian warriors. They have about 50 so yesterday I bought two and a couple of those green spider things and a can of purple ooze with a brain in it. That and 3 or 4 horror dvds that Target has for a dollar a piece.

12.30: Rambo

(6.00-12.00 AKA the cartoons i would sleep over.)

My perfect Saturday morning: Real Ghostbusters, ThunderCats, Ninja Turtles (the original, not the humorless new one), Speed Racer, Captain Scarlet, GI Joe Sigma Six and Bratz. The last choice is odd but you have to respect a cartoon that gets away with nose job jokes, Mattel bashing, and downright hoochieness.

Chestnuts roasted by Kennef @ 10/02/2005 04:14 PM EST

Just tried the Jones Soda Scary Berry Lemonade. I honestly don't find it offensive at all. It taste like Squirt with a hint of something berry-tasting (although which berry I can't honestly say).

I give this soda a B+.

I have an addition to my line up to make. Some where in there I have to have Captain Scarlet (the original not the new crapy CG one). That, my freinds, is the greatest show ever! Captain Scarlet! do do do do!,To his Martian foes, a dangerous name, A Superman! They crash him, and his body may burn. They smash him, but they know he'll return, To live again! It's a must see full of dolls shooting each other, buildings, tanks, planes exploding in massive fire balls. And the hero, Captain Scarlet, even dies several times but because he was once under Mysteron control he can heal and return to life. The only thing that can kill him is electrocution. Spectrum is green!

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 10/02/2005 04:41 PM EST

This would be my Saturday Line up

6:00am - John Candy Show(2 eps.)
7:00am - Super Mario Super SHow (2eps)
8:00am - Pirates of Dark Water (2 eps.)
9:00am - The Centurions (Dos eps.)
10:00am - He-man(2 eps.)

12:00pm - Todays Special
12:30pm - The Gary Coleman Show

What's wrong with mature toons, Goob? I mean you cannot deny ATHF. X-E readers will revolt razz

So, you're telling me you wouldn't have watched those shows when you were a kid if they had existed? You may have a point though, perhaps the jokes would have went over our heads. Although, it wasn't specified whether we would be watching them as children or currently.

But forget all that, DocDragon said: ANY cartoon [original author's capitalization] big grin

What was that Captain Scarlet type show where they were in a submarine?

Chestnuts roasted by Kennef @ 10/02/2005 04:59 PM EST

Hey, what was that gameshow with that guy--my memory tells me he looked like the guy who was the lawyer on that MTV Court Show and went on to play the guy in Van Wilder who first paid Van to plan parties--who had kids playing Nintendo games and then had like a store and would pick stuff out of it to give to them when they won?

It couldn't have been called Nintendo Power, could it? I remember watching it every morning before going to school.

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 10/02/2005 05:04 PM EST

Kennef- no that was another show made by the same guy that did Captain Scarlet. Captain Scarlet is way better.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 10/02/2005 05:08 PM EST

The one when they were in the submarine was called Stingray. I saw it on the TV one afternoon a few weeks back. One of the puppets actually SWEATED. But he *was* trying to diffuse a bomb.

Chestnuts roasted by Mikee Teevee @ 10/02/2005 05:20 PM EST

Gotta love Captain Scarlet. "S.I.G., Captain" It took me forever to find out what S.I.G. meant.

Kennef, I think you are referring to Stingray. I forget if it was made before or after Captain Scarlet, but it was the same idea, with the marionettes, and made by the same guy (Gerry Anderson)

Chestnuts roasted by LuLu @ 10/02/2005 05:24 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by Mikee Teevee @ 10/02/2005 05:47 PM EST

LuLu- don't listen to Mikee Teevee, he's obviously a Mysteron agent! S.I.R.! Spectrum is Red! Spectrum is very Red!

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 10/02/2005 08:14 PM EST

lol. Yeah, those Mysterons could take over anybody and you would never know it until they attempt their heinous plot. That's what I loved about Captain Scarlet...you never know who might be a Mysteron agent. That and the fact the Captain Scarlet was completely immortal made this the best show. Was there anything that could kill him? I know he had the power to regenerate and all that, but I don't remember if there was one thing that could actually kill him.

I watched one episode of Stingray, but I didn't like it nearly as much. It took me a while to get into it, and by then the episode was almost over. It was okay though.

Somebody mentioned Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Ah, the crazy world of Sid and Marty Krofft. I LOVE H. R. Pufnstuf. For some reason it makes me feel so happy!!

I am too young to actually remember any of these shows on TV, but I have recently seen them on DVD. Kind of makes me wish I had been born earlier...naw, the 80s were the best. *hums TMNT theme song*

Chestnuts roasted by LuLu @ 10/02/2005 08:34 PM EST

I'm too lazy to put together an actual Sat. lineup, but it would include the following:

David the Gnome
Today's Special
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Super Mario Brothers Super Show (they need to put this on DVD.)
Maple Town
that Nick show with the koalas...not the noozles...I'll think of it later
My Little Pony
Garfield and Friends
Pinwheel
Space Cases
Pete and Pete
maybe a very early All That
Bill Nye the Science Guy
Wishbone
Blue's Clues (with STEVE, not Joe!)
Tailspin
Gummi Bears
Ducktales

I'm sure there are more that I would include, but those are the main ones.

Chestnuts roasted by LuLu @ 10/02/2005 08:40 PM EST

Knegative

Well, I was assuming the poll is calling for old cartoons we miss that if we saw them on saturday morning, with a great big bowl of cocoa puffs (my choice for cereal chocolately goodness) a glass of milk, and some other kind of early morning snacks on a comfy couch, they would feel like a kid again.

I'm just saying it sounds really off when they start putting anime and futurama, and other adult cartoons. And besides, you can watch those shows on cartoon network, why wouldn't you want to open up a fantasy vault and poke around and pull out cartoons you haven't seen for years.

That is what I am sayin' is all smile

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 10/02/2005 11:12 PM EST

the koala cartoon I was thinking of was "Adventures of the Little Koala" I really loved that show, but it was a little strange...sometimes it scared me. But then again, I was scared of everything when I was a kid.

And HOW could I forget to put Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite and Carebears on my list!!! Strawberry Shortcake always made me feel so happy. I'm glad they are bringing her back and all, but it is totally not the same!!

I am an early riser, so I shall cover all bases of the Saturday morning ritual, from stumbling out of bed to being told to leave the TV alone and go outside or do homework...

6AM - "Starstuff" (Philly CBS affiliate's cheap kids' live-action show)
6:30AM - "Today's Special"
7AM - "Dora the Explorer"
7:30AM - "The Smurfs"
8AM - "Muppet Babies"

10AM - "TMNT" (original)
10:30AM - "The Real Ghostbusters"
11AM - "Sailor Moon"
11:30AM - "Jem and the Holograms"
12PM - "Looney Tunes"
Random "Schoolhouse Rock" segments between shows

Narrowly missing out...

"He-Man"
"She-Ra"
"Dungeons and Dragons"
"Pokemon" (first two seasons)
"Animaniacs"
"Blue's Clues"
"Pirates of Dark Water"
"Recess"
"Alivn and the Chipmunks/Chipmunks Go to the Movies"
"Darkwing Duck"
"Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers"
"Pepper Ann"
The many versions of "Scooby Doo"
"Danger Mouse"
"Count Duckula"
"The Powerpuff Girls"
"Tom and Jerry"

And speaking of cartoons, I finally got around to buying my second Halloween special, a video copy of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." I can now fully appreciate Chuck's humiliating trick-or-treat and Linus' yearly sit in the pumpkin patch more than just the week before.
