Okay okay, you can stop e-mailing me, I got them I got them. Exclusive to Target, it's the Jones Soda Halloween Collection, a series of four fine soft drinks ranging from "Caramel Apple" to "Candy Corn," and yeah I've probably got 24 hours to live. Actually, they're nowhere near as offensive as the flavors in last year's Holiday Pack, but it's just more proof that we should always think twice before drinking from cans with pictures of goblins on them. If interested, they're cheap, on borrowed time and are absolutely going to be the cause of many "HAVE YA HEARD ABOUT DEEEEES" conversations this Halloween season. Enjoy, and pretend it's Monday.

That liquid was so bright, it almost doesn't look real. And when something doesn't look quite real, it looks spooooky.....so it kinda works.

nice article. The non novelty soda I've had that tasted shitty was the red licorice kind that safeway makes. The first few sips were ok, the rest was bad. Especially because it was flat.
The jones soda I would try is the blue, neon light one. Psst check out my listing link

I'm giving them out to trick or treaters this year.

I didn't really think the candy corn tasted 100% like candy corn. I'd go maybe 40% candy corn and 60% cotton candy (or cotton candy flavored bubble gum). The first sip made it totally understandable why they chose not to put the stuff in larger cans. P.S. Corpse Bride is really good!

Those cans look ominous. I think they know that once you drink from them, your soul will be theirs...
I'm all for new and exciting drinks, but hopefully these don't taste like medicine. I'm sure the flavours were created when one guy was eating, say a caramel apple, and said "You know what? This would be better...as liquid food I could down in three seconds"

Whoa... that is the bluest blue I've ever seen in a soda. Despite the words of warning on taste, the color alone seems to be a vortex - sucking my soul out of me and replacing free will with a strong desire to go to Target and grab a 6 pack.

Just another manic pseudo-Monday.
Is it wrong that a review which repeatedly underscored the unpalatability of each and every soda in the line makes me want to go out and stockpile them so I'll never run out?

Matt, I hate to criticize your english, but the expression "2 for 2" near the end of the article implies there were two options, and both worked out. Personally I think "2 and 2" works better, as in two balls and two strikes, four total possibilities, with a pair of both good and bad resullting. Once again, feel free to tell me to F-off, and I'm sure you'll erase this as soon as you reach a decision.

Chestnuts roasted by kidneyboy @ 09/25/2005 04:29 PM EST
I don't have a valid opinion on KMFDM, but they are on the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack which is pretty good (the soundtrack, not the movie), so I'll give them props. Not madd props, but just props.
Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever actually been to the Rave, even though I've lived within like 100 miles of it my whole life. Meh.

Either the Jason

I've actually warmed up to System of a Down since hearing Richard Cheese's amazing covers, and I spent far too many of my tender years listening to Green Day to really haterate, but this line from Gozer's link just about killed me: "If Green Day's vile American Idiot built political commentary out of Lego, Mezmerize snaps it together out of Duplo..."
Speaking of dumb things I did as a teenager, when I first discovered Jones soda on a vacation I was immediately obsessed. I bought every bottle they had and convinced myself I was going to get a picture onto a label (this was before they offered the customized ones, and no I never even bothered submitting a photo
). My dresser was covered with empty bottles that I used as decoration and/or nifty candleholders. I didn't get rid of them until I moved out of the house, and even then it was reluctantly. Still miss 'em, along with the Star Wars Pepsi cans they shared decorating (and eventually landfill) space with.

Chestnuts roasted by Kyle @ 09/25/2005 07:26 PM EST
So I picked up the Scary Berry and S'Lime varieties a couple of weeks ago and I really liked them. I love the Berry Lemonade when it's not Halloween-themed, but it tastes so much better in a can with a jack-o-lantern design on it. Yum.
After reading the article, I might pick up Caramel Apple sometime, but there is still no way I'm springing for the Candy Corn. Even if it only tastes faintly like it's namesake, that's too much for me. I am not a fan of candy corn.
Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 09/25/2005 08:25 PM EST
Rainbowfeet, I have a question re: Scary Berry. Did you drink yours chilled? A couple of folks said that they enjoy it, but I just can't believe it. It's not bad in the sense that it makes you wanna hurl, but I just can't picture sitting there sipping my way through even a half-sized can.

Sorry Kyle but yes this is another wrestling reference. Long story short, the Road Warriors (aka the Legion of Doom) were a landmark wrestling tag team who emerged in the early 1980's. Hawk and Animal were designed to be villians but they were very popular with the fans like traditional good guys would have been. Hawk died in 2003 thus ending the greatest tag team in wrestling history. Click the name and the other link for more.
According to their webpage, Animal gives motivational speeches. Maybe a good keynote speaker at X-E-rama '06????

The Road Warrior movie was awesome but wrestling sucks worse than Jones Soda. A friend and I were out cruising Target this afternoon and she bought two packs of Candy Corn and drank four cans out of it. It smelled disgusting. I wouldn't even try it. Ewww. She called me later and said it tastes even better frozen, like a candy corn popsicle.

This is random, but I just saw the trailer for "Doom" the movie today. Is it just me or does it look like it'll be really awful? I can handle "The Rock" too - at least he wasn't in "The Pacifier". The trailer just had this terrible-movie feel to it. Not that it can't be awful and still entertaining (the Resident Evil movies come to mind). When will mankind learn to make either games into good movies or movies into good games? Why? I blame E.T.

For the record I'm shocked Matt picked Pitch Black as the official beverage of the holliday season as well... I honestly now consider Caramel Apple to be my new favorite flavor of sugar water.
Tried the Candy Corn as well and it's actually growing on me. It's kind of like a heavy cream soda with a nice butterscotch finish.
Chestnuts roasted by Paul S. @ 09/26/2005 12:03 AM EST
Gozer I couldn't agree more. It just has BOMB etched all over its ugly face. Why do movie studios have to make movies like this? O think it is extremely to make a good movie based off a good video game because the essence of the game is only faithfully reproduced while playing the game. Trying to throw in live action to the mix makes things worse (see Street Fighter: The Movie) because it just looks hokey. Leave games to be games please!!!!!
Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 09/26/2005 12:15 AM EST
I agree with Doom looking like it just plain sucks. I don't think I could could stand all the shots they did in first person point-of-view like in the game itself. It'd get tiresome after a while. But there has been some good movies based on video games, such as Resident Evil movies, more so Apocalypse. There has been a few alright ones too. But yeah, I suppose most of movies based on video games do suck. I guess they're making Resident Evil: Afterlife. Hopefully it will be good.
So, a dumb question, how do you make the Jason face?

Yeah, a Doom ad ran during American Dad and it looks like they just filmed the game, then inserted shots of people screaming. The studio logic is, "these young people, who are the only people we care about, play video games. We must make quick movies out of them, plot be darned." Bah.
You know, I still believe it IS possible to make a good video game-based movie...it's just that no one will try.

Oh well I guess we have to learn our lessons one way or the other.
Chestnuts roasted by Texican @ 09/26/2005 09:54 AM EST
My own little mini review:
Candy Corn - I thought this was the worst of the batch. It tasted to me exactly like drinking carbonated maple syrup. 3 out of 10.
Caramel Apple - Pleasantly surprised by this one because it really did taste like drinking apple juice, but with a hint of sugar and/or caramel. 7 out of 10.
Scary Blue Lemonade - Huge disappointment. The flavor sounds so appealing, but it just didn't live up. 4 out of 10.
Strawberry S'Lime - I thought this one was legitimately good. I found it to be rather tasty while choking down some hamburgers. 8 out of 10.
Mountain Dew Pitch Black - Pretty God awful terrible. And yet I can't stop drinking it. I swear they put crack in Mountain Dew. I'm suprised I ever managed to ween myself off of Code Red. 5 out of 10.
On a sidenote, I think a pumpkin pie flavored drink could be interesting. Maybe a pumpkin pie milkshake. Hm...I think I'll try to make one of those on my own for the Holiday season.
Chestnuts roasted by Brian @ 09/26/2005 09:55 AM EST
Brian: I agree with the pumpkin pie drink thought. I really like the "pumpkin spice" drinks at Starbucks that they have now during the fall season. I think I even like it better than the gingerbread and pepermint stuff they have during Christmastime.
Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/26/2005 10:32 AM EST
I was so thankful that Jones put them in tiny cans. It's a lot less soda to choke down or feel like you're wasting. Admittedly, though it's in my fridge, I still haven't tried Strawberry S'lime. I have tried the others, though. Scary Berry Lemonade was my first, and maybe I'm all screwed up, but I liked it. I drank the whole thing. And, yes, it was really cold. I've found that very few sodas actually taste good warm, and those that do always taste better frosty, so I figured they stood their best chance being chilled overnight. Brian was right, the Candy Corn soda did have a decidedly maple flavor. I recoiled in horror with one sip. Between my husband and I we've managed to pawn off all but one can. But, I think Caramel Apple rocked. It was like sparkling apple juice with a touch of caramel in it. The more I drank it, the more it grew on me. I actually found myself craving another can of it a little later. Make no mistake, it's a strange flavor, but the kind you can't help but want to keep trying. God bless Jones Soda.

I forgot to mention this, but I think the Scary Berry Lemonade tastes like the middle of a raspberry Tootsie Pop. You have to envision it at the point where the chocolate is peeking through, but there's still raspberry candy left so you're getting an equal taste of both. That's my opinion anyway.

I work at Culver's and we have pumpkin milkshakes and malts. We actually just use the pumpkin pie mix(the stuff that looks like it came out of Robocop's ass trap) and just blend it up with custard. And a sprinkle of cinammon on top. We also have cranberry shakes (duh, being in Wisconsin!) and eggnog shakes start in the winter (which means next week in Wisconsin
)

I know the sodas themselves aren't worth it, but I knew nothing of Jones Sode before this article and now I have to try them.
On a side know, I hadn't read that Christmas article from last year until now and wow, you work(ed?) with some attractive ladies, Matt

Brian,
Jack-in-the-Box made a pumpkin pie shake last year. It's pretty good. Order a small. Like the Jones Soda, a little goes a long way.

Being in the UK, I have to say it's fascinating to see all the effort fimrs/people go to over Halloween in the US. We just don't get any of this stuff over here. To be honest, the shops are so full of Christmas stuff there isn't any room for it..

I always found it odd that Halloween is so unappreciated in the UK, considering all this stuff began in England and the British Isles.
I hope it's at least still popular in Ireland.

The soda cans dissapeared years ago here (Perú) coz they were more expensive than bottles (but beer cans still existing). Just imagine Halloween scary soda bottles... I'd like that

The only one I liked is the Berry Lemonade it reminds me of Slush Puppies/Nerds candy.
The rest taste like shit...

I never really thought much of Jones soda to begin with, and that Thanksgiving set of theirs looked absolutely revolting.
This doesn't seem much better either. I love soda more than anyone, but that's just going too far.

I feel like the Strawberry S'lime and the Scary Berry Lemonade are just regular Jones soda flavors year round. I bought a twelve pack each of Strawberry Lime and Berry Lemonade at Target over the summer.
I haven't tasted the Halloween editions though, so I'm not sure about that. I really liked the Strawberry Lime though.

Question: Now understanding that S'Lime and Berry Lemonade are perennial flavors, does anyone know if they've been dyed such weird colors during their "normal" run?

target has these for 1.49 a 4 pack starting tommorrow. He Matt I just saw a comercial for the limited Halloween cereal. Think it was Apple Jacks or Luckycharms or something, prob like the 3 from last year, but different for 2005. Article to follow i hope?................

That's a great news. I'm glad to know about the new collection.

Just picked these up at Target. I thought all of them were actually pretty good!! The candy corn was definitely like drinking maple syrup. I don't generall like drinking maple syrup, so I didn't drink the whole thing, but the flavor itself was unoffensive. The Caramel Apple tasted a little rotten-ish, like they haven't quite gotten that caramel formula down yet. It was just kind of like drinking really old apples. The other two tasted like normal fruity flavors to me. A little too fruity, so I'm glad they are in really small cans. I only drank like 1/4 can of each. Also, I read a recipe in the Target ad for Halloween Punch, using the Strawberry S'lime and the Scary Berry Lemonade. So I mixed the two and I think the mixed is WAY better than separated. I don't know if anybody else has tried this, but I really liked it. It kind of toned down the flavors assaulting your palate. It was nice. If anybody else tries it, let me know what you think. I also mixed Candy Corn and Caramel Apple (just so I could be the first on the board to tell the story!) Do not try it, it is REVOLTING!!
They're on sale at Target, so get them while they're hot (cold?) (By the way, I drank mine slightly chilled. They were in the fridge for about 30 min, and then I couldn't stand the suspense and had to try them.)

I just drank some more and realized that the Caramel Apple tastes exactly like Apple Juice mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar. I don't taste anything resembling Caramel. It's not completely gross though.

The strawberry lime and berry lemonade seem to be a lot brighter in the Halloween editions, or maybe that's just because there's a camera flash shooting through them. Berry lemonade is blue, but not quite that blue, and strawberry lime (my favorite!) is the same color as any other strawberry soda.
