09/20/2005 Entry: "New Halloween Candy For 2005!"

What you see above is York's contribution to the Halloween season, the York Peppermint Batty. That's right. Batty. That's aight. You and I appreciate things like Peppermint Batties, and in turn, the Halloween Countdown entry for September 21st examines six different Halloween candies for trick-or-treaters. For all I know, these selections are new for the 2005 season. Don't complain if you saw them last year, because that ain't the point. The point is that candy is GOOD.

Survey: Pretty sure we've done this one, or something like it. Sorry. Recommend your fellow readers a horror movie they might not have seen. I'll start. Monkey Shines, from 1988. Definitely not a classic and probably not the most "Halloweeny" movie you could throw on, but the film works perfectly if you're up in the middle of the night and feeling too guilty about it to watch anything vivid. The story of a newly handicapped man enduring the psycho love of his monkey maid, a lot of people say that director George Romero misfired with this one. I guess he did, but still, you can't really go wrong with psycho maid monkeys. Your turn.

Last Man On Earth with the late great Vincent Price as our hero. Humanity has been turned into vampires by a strange disease and Vincent is the only one left who isn't enfected. Will he survive? I ain't telling but it has one damn good ending.

Oh, definitely Trick Or Treat. Released in 1986, it stars Skippy from Family Ties as an 80s headbanger who summons an evil demon by playing a heavy metal record backwards. It even features a cameo by Ozzy Osbourne as a bible-thumping minister who rants about the dangers of rock music.

Highly, highly recommended.

Lots of gore, cute girls and cheesy 80s acting.

Well, I'm going to get through the 25 DVD'S in my mom's collector's set. Black and White action if I see anything terrific, I might mail it in to you for subjectification. I HEART the jokebox btw.

For sheer "this is so unwatchable that I can't look away" effect, check out Fever Lake.

It has 23 year old Mario Lopez and 25 year old Corey Haim pretending to be high schoolers. And there's a mystical Indian with plenty of wolf stock footage. If you can make any sense out of it, you are either really smart or extremely sober.

So much to say...
1. Both TARGET and the MARS candy company are doing baby face monsters this year as their Halloween motif. Not sure why but just an observation.
2. I am holding a bag of the German version of Haribo gummi bear called GOLDBAREN in my hands right now. A student gave it to Mrs. Manimal recently. SPOOKY that it should be referenced tonight. The bear is saying, "Die Echten" for anyone who wants to translate.
3. Horror movie off the beaten path recommendation: COMPANY OF WOLVES. Captures the atmosphere of a nightmare fairly well. Not scary but interesting...

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 09/20/2005 09:25 PM EST

Okay, here's a flick thats not for Halloween but IS in fact terrifying... Howard the Duck... On second thought. Don't ever watch that. You'll end up sawing your testicles off before it's over. Anyways, a serious suggestion... Go with Bubba-Ho-Tep. Can't go wrong with old Elvis and Black JFK fighting a mummy in a nursing home.

Necronomicon.
A couple moves into a new house, and finds a copy of the Necronomicon inside, and they read about 3 different people's experiences with it. That provides the connection between 3 separate stories directed by seperate directors. One of the directors is Shusuke Kaneko, who became better known for the 90's "Gamera" trilogy, as well as "Pyrokinesis"and "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack".

Here's some movie recommendations:

1.Dolls- Made by Charles Band and better than his later film, Puppet Master.
2.Black Roses- Movie about a demonic heavy metal group.
3.Zombie- The Fulci classic
4.Arcade- Super cheesy Full Moon release about a virtual reality game that kills.
5.Suspiria- Argento's witchraft classic

Small time reader, first time poster. Stumbled across this site when i searched for the old halloween game for qizard. Read your article. Figured out you can post on the blog. So.... good movie? Obvious choice for me one of the Halloweens or a great one is Fright Night. Return of the Living Dead has its moments...

Barney's Christmas. That'll really freak you out.

OK OK. So I had to make the most cliched anti-Barney joke of all time. Anyway, I really have to recommend "The Silver Bullet." The way in which the priest/werewolf dies at the end is golden.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/20/2005 10:29 PM EST

D-Roc: Excellent pick with "Arcade"! Hard to go wrong with Ralphie from "A Christmas Story," Seth Green and that guy who played Q on "Star Trek: TNG." Plus, it was written by David Goyer, writer of "Batman Begins" and "Blade" amon gother notables.
My choice: "Rock n' Roll Nightmare." Hair metal band battles demonic potato puppets in a cursed house. Lead singer Thor turns out to be an angel who battles some kinda feline Satan. Pretty badass...

Chestnuts roasted by Commander Awesome @ 09/20/2005 10:31 PM EST

My vote goes to "Night of the Creeps". Tom Atkins as a grizzled detective (again). Killer space slugs. A hot sorority chick with a pointless quickie nude scene. David Paymer in an early bit role he'd probably rather forget about. The movie is a classic.

Chestnuts roasted by greeneyedzeke @ 09/20/2005 10:58 PM EST

I second commander awsome's pick of "rock n roll nightmare", but if you can find a copy try the end all, be all of 80's cheese metal cash in slashers w/ "Hard Rock Zombies". Absurd music montages, an old person fucking a werewolf, a mutated midget eats itself, pedophile love songs and nazis. made for about $10. can't lose.

Chestnuts roasted by retard oliver @ 09/20/2005 11:01 PM EST

Well, if you're going this route, I have a few reccomendations:

1. Hard Rock Zombies: 80's Heavy Metal Band gets killed by Hitler and the Werewolf Eva Braun; come back as zombies.

2. Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter: Jesus, a lesbian, and a Mexican wrestler fight vampires

3. God Told Me To: Five O'Clock shadows and a murderous God!

4. Dead Birds: The guy from Almost Famous as an 1800's gangster. Also, it is so fun it burns.

5. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter: Just see it. It's totally awesome

this movie was so freaking wierd. and, it features a guy having sex with his girlfriend...oh wait, I forgot to add that he had previously killed his girlfriend when he thought she was a zombie, but she wasn't. BUT, when she finally is a zombie, he decides to have sex with her.

I can’t watch these without laughing most of the way through 'em. Toss together some friends and a few drinks, and each of these become gems in the world of awesomely crappy horror movies.

1. The Gate (1987) – some kids accidentally open up a gate leading to hell. This one really freaked me out as a kid, and my younger sister recoils in horror when she sees the scene when one gets a stabbed in the eye with a Barbie doll leg. Best Quote: “Yooouuu’ve beeeeen baaaaaad.”

2. Troll 2 (1990) – don’t worry if you haven’t seen Troll 1, because they are not at all related. In fact, this movie isn’t even about trolls, the monsters running around are referred to as goblins (amongst other things). Clearly there were studio issues from start to finish, because this is quite possibly the poorest quality movie, in terms of production that I’ve ever seen. But I still continue to watch it over and over again. You’ll love the twist ending as well. Best Quote: “They’re eating her, and they’re going to eat me. Oh my Goooooooood”

"Die Echten" (high school German, don't fail me now) "the original" or "the real ones"

Actual phrase learned in high school German:

"Er klingelt an der Tur" or "He is ringing the doorbell."

Useful.

Chestnuts roasted by Kate @ 09/20/2005 11:59 PM EST

Mr. Boligarky, I can't get through "The Gate" without cracking up either!! Loved the eyeball in the palm of his hand scene. Makes me laugh everytime. I used to discuss this one at the video store.

My pick is "Tales from the Crypt Presents Bordello of Blood." Ok, so it's a completely insane, stupid horror-comedy, but I love it. Dennis Miller is the best thing about this movie. He fights vampresses in a haunted whorehouse with Super Soakers. He also has the best one liners. So what if he didn't show up until 20 minutes into the film?! Watch the beginning the first time, then fast forward to when he shows up. Trust me, you only need to see the beginning once. Matt, can you do a review of this film? I know I'm a 22-year old girl, but stuff like this cracks me up to no end!!! Delightfully trashy (not me, the movie).

Chestnuts roasted by Elmo Machete @ 09/21/2005 12:04 AM EST

If you can get your hands on the Dario Argento produced (and Lamberto Bava directed) "Demons", watch it. How often do you get movie theaters, katanas, dirt bikes, helicopter crashes, and vile, murderous demons in one movie?

Not nearly enough. In fact, if every movie had all of that, it wouldn't be enough.

"Demons 2" is a good followup. Avoid "Demons 3" at any and all costs.

Chestnuts roasted by The Wukong Effect @ 09/21/2005 12:10 AM EST

These are much more sci-fi than "horror", but they have horror elements: my choices would be The Cube trilogy. This includes The Cube, Cube 2: Hypercube, and Cube Zero (the prequel).

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/21/2005 12:25 AM EST

I really don't know that many obscure horror movies, but once upon a time on a trip to the local library I spotted "Return of the Living Dead Part II" and knew it was something I had to see based on name alone. Then this Cotter kid comes along and mentions the series before I get to it, so I suppose if you want a good fright on Halloween night, it might seem trite, but it would light...my fire? I dunno, I couldn't think of anything, so I tried distracting you with poetry. Next time I'll try blinding you with science instead of setting poetry in motion.

Ooh - "Grandpa's Magical Toys." I won't lie; I don't have the slightest idea what this movie is. In fact, it's probably too short to qualify as a movie. All I know is that when I tried to think of something scary presented to me through the medium of video played to correspond to an audio track, the title of a tape I can't remember and that I haven't seen in probably more than fifteen years came to mind. Anything like that sounds weird and eerie.

Long time lurker, first time poster, etc etc...
A pretty decent horror film that has its own little twist is April Fool's Day.

Chestnuts roasted by Dylan @ 09/21/2005 12:49 AM EST

Yeah, so I researched only after posting about my ignorance. That's how I do, dogs. Here's a description of Grandpa's Magical Toys I stole from Amazon.com:
"It’s a very special day when Peter and his friends go to Grandpa’s to see his toys. And before they know it, they find themselves magically shrinking to toy size! That’s just the beginning in this delightful musical adventure with an international flair. Meet Punchinello the Clown, a clapping British sailor, a jump-roping little Dutch Girl, young Scottish dancers, and more, as they sing, dance, and serve up plenty of laughs. And when they help Grandpa solve a problem, everyone learns the importance of being young at heart. This colorful, live-action, upbeat musical is sure to charm kids of all ages with over 20 familiar children’s songs, jump rope rhymes, and clapping games."

I'd say the clown side of things led to some memory repression. I know it sounds like a terrible, cliche joke, but I really am terrified of clowns. I can't stand 'em, not even when they're teaching toy-sized children clapping games. As a side note, this was actually a "Wee Sing" video. In closing, I leave you with reviews from Barnes and Noble's website:

"All 5 of my children have loved this video. The music is wonderful and the characters are delightful. I hear my children singing these songs on their own now! It has sparked an interest in my daughters about jump roping and hand-clapping songs. I love that the music is interactive and engages the kids in dancing and singing. A must have!"

"I am 13 and I think this has the single greatest songs ever and my favorite characters are the merry go round animals and the finale"

April Fools, staring not one, but two of the stars of the fabulous 80's flick, Just One of the Guys. Rick stars as a handsome director-type devil and that filthy slut that was trying to get in Teri's pants is also in the mix. Both of them get theirs and everyone dies, highly recommended!

My picks for unknown horror films:

April Fools- A typical slasher with a sorta twist ending.
Boogens- Horrid killer turtles flick
Bloody Valentine
Humanoids from the Deep- The 80's version
Dr. Phibes films
Sorority Babes at Slimeball Bowlarama
Puppetmaster vs. Demonic Toys
Slumber Party Massacre
The 1986 musical version of Little Shop of Horrors
I really believe that Halloween 3 gets an unfair bad rap.
Hollow Man
Tremors
Man-Thing
Dead Alive- Peter Jackson's first film I think
Species
Campfire Tales
Nightmares
Uncle Sam-Matt reviewed this I think
Killer Condom
Jack Frost- Killer Snowman
The Shaft- Killer Elevator

One more I forgot- The Last Broadcast aka the Legend of the Jersey Devil. It's a "Blair Witch" style film made a few years BEFORE Blair Witch. It's about the a journalist investigating some murders surrounding a so called Jersey Devil Killer. The ending caught me completly off-guard. A VERY HIGH RECOMMENDATION.

Also, Matt- I caught the Furby spot on Nick a couple of days ago. It was so awesome! Congratulations!

The Frighteners with Michael J. Fox. It came out in 1996, but i never actually saw it until today, and i saw it on accident. I was downloading what i thought was the new harry potter movie, but when it finished what I got was the frighteners, not wanting to waste a 6 hr d/l I watched it anyway. It was surprisingly pretty good. it's not too scary but was pretty funny and has some good effects for 1996 that still look good today.

Man some good suggestions, I will def check out Slumber Party Massacre.

Night of the Demons was good as somebody mentioned, also check out 2 & 3.

Night of the Comet is a cheesy 80s one I've seen on cable a couple of times. Worthy of checking out cuz it's just so 80s, it's basically a rip/spoof on Omega Man or any movie where you wake up and are among a small group of the last people living on Earth..

When I was a kid, I made it my mission to read the back of every horror movie in the local movie store. And my mother let me. The Monkey Shines box, with some sort of ridiculous "creepy" poem on it, and a knife wielding toy monkey on the cover scared the ever-loving shit out of me. I saw the actual movie last year on Skin-emax and found it to be nowhere near as scary as my seven year old mind imagined it to be.

"Dellamorte Dellamore" (a.k.a.: Cemetery Man) -- I know somebody already mentioned this one, but I feel obligated to recommend it simply because it's one of my absolute favorite movies. I just researched a little about it, considering I haven't seen it in...10 years or so. Dead Alive (aka Braindead) has to be one of the best horror films I've ever seen.

Quick Facts:
Directed by Peter Jackson
First 1/2 hour or so seems like a New Zealand love story
Billed as "the goriest fright flim of all time." (as of 1992)
Funny as hell

I recommend it more than I could ever put into words.

Manimal- Kate was pretty on with the translation. You should see the selection of Haribo stuff here in German stores. Probably over 20 varieties, some of the best including: Gummi Cola, a licorice assortment named Colorado (represent!), and...Gummi Wine! Still no signs of Duff Gummi Beer, but that's probably as close as you're going to get. =)

You know what I like to do during the seaon, consume as many horror movies as possible, then the day after Halloween I watch Gremlins, its a nice buffer between Halloween and Christmas. It gives me something to look forward to so I don't get post Halloween blues when it comes to an abrupt halt, AND it gears me up for Christmas cheer. Its really, in my mind, the proper time to watch Gremlins as its both a horror movie AND a Christmas movie. Thought ya'll needed to know that.

As for good "bad" horror movies - another vote for "Dolls" (there's nobody noteworthy in it though)

"Fright Night" is pretty good & has Roddy McDowell, Chris Sarandon and the lesbian from "Married with Children."

"Night of the Creeps" is great & has Jason Lively, aka Rusty # 2 from "Nat'l Lampoon's European Vacation" (though the girl who played Audrey would've been a helluva lot scarier, as herself).

The 1988 remake of "The Blob" is fucking amazing.

The Eye is set to be remade for American audiences, but it's hard to imagine it being scarier than this movie about a chick that gets an eye transplant and ends up seeing more than she wants.

The Phone is a Korean horror film about a, uh, phone. Really scary.

And then there's Ju-On. Even if you saw The Grudge. Even if you hated The Grudge. This one is worth checking out. Way scarier than The Grudge (which I liked). Good luck watching this one alone in the dark.

Fright Night and Night of the Creeps scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, I never got past the first scene with Grace Jones killing that guy in the strip club. April Fools Day is one of my favorites, and I just rented Prince of Darkness which I havent seen in 10 years or so. I don't remember much about it except for Alice Cooper is a crazy hobo. Also no-one mentioned The Stuff. So cheesy, so terrible yet so funny.

"Prince of Darkness" to this day gives me shivers for those scenes of the bums being controlled by Satan, standing in a line outside the church just staring in with vacant expressions.

Freaktastic!

The last time I responded to this particular horror movie story, I think I mentioned something about liking the mothman prophecies, and someone totally tooled on me and made me cry, so I will keep my movie preferences to myself, BITCHES.

Secondly, I think the reason the gummi worms are spelled "Frite" is because in their non-halloween format, they are called "Brite Crawlers"...so they probably wanted to keep the rhymey mispelling thing consistent.

In the Mouth of Madness is really nightmarish to watch. Un Chien Andalou has some firghtful imagery including a woman getting her eyeball sliced open with a straight razor, ewww, eye injuries and fingernail pulling outs are the most disturbing injuries.

I'm still trying to remember the movie I saw once on Elvira's Movie Macabre. About a possible were-beast killing people in the woods. And two reeeaaallly old spinster sisters who have a connection to the killings. Low budget, and a ending so stupid it will come to mind unbidden at inopportune moments.
The original "House on Haunted Hill" is another good one. You can find it on DVD in unexpected places. The copy I have came in a Hallowe'en two-disc music set. Buy yours today!
And finally, if you dig "Van Helsing," "Blade," "John Carpenter's Vampires," or even "Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird!," you'll love "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust." You'll wish that you had a working relationship with your left hand.

It's been mentioned already, but Night of the Creeps is the best "horror movie you might not have seen" that I know of. I saw it last week for the first time and I was excited to discover it. Good stuff. I've seen it three times now all courtesy of the Encore Mystery channel.

It's horror but comedy/horror. It has 80s cheez. It spoofs classic horror movies AND if you're really paying attention you can catch a gazillion horror/sci-fi references.

Man, I don't watch enough horror movies, but I can think of of some good overlooked films that are disturbing enough

Freaked: Where do I start? This gross-out comedy involves a red neck mad scientist(played by Randy Quaid)using an illegal fertilizer to turn average people into sideshow freaks. Stars "Not Keanu Reeves" from "Bill and Ted" in the lead role, features Mr. T as the bearded woman, Bobcat Goldthwait as a guy with a sock for a head, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves as the dog boy. Hillarious beyond reason.

Alien Nine: This is actually a four episode anime mini series, but since they include all four episodes on one disc, where's the harm. Having a plot about three junior high school girls wearing alien symbiotes on their heads to chase down and capture wild aliens loose in their town, the cute artwork on the cover leaves you unexpecting of the dark tone, main characters completely losing it, and shocking ending.

First time posting, just found this site, I'm digging it so far...thought I'd share my input on this topic

A movie which hits on all cylinders with me is called "Tease". It stars Rosanna Arquette and a bunch of other B,C,D and F list "celebs".

It's got all you could ask for...attempted horror and suspense, hot chick which can't act getting naked, unnecessary subplot which is never explained, ridiculous lines blurted out as if they mean something, foreign characters that change their accents 30840984 times during the film...everything...it's awesome.

Sure, it's not your typical Halloween flick, but it's good for laughs.

I also caught some abomination known as "Crocodile" on SciFi this past weekend...it's pretty craptacular as well.

Castle Freak from 1995. No really big names in it but one of those movies that are entertaining really late at night when you can't sleep. Which is how I started watching it...this naked monster/deformed guy terrorizes a family who just inherited this Italian villa/castle. Complete with a blind girl, a dead cat and a great pure fuck/sex scene in a wine cellar how can you go wrong?

The Peppermint Batty reminded me of something, but I couldn't quite place it. So I occupied myself with catching up on a WebComic to give my brain a chance to figure it out. It looks like those cookies Batman used on that one episode of "Scooby-Doo" when he kept giving Scoob Bat-Cookies to motivate him. You think he had a jar at the Bat-Cave with a big "BAT-COOKIES" label on it?

I must recommend Stuart Gordon's "Dagon." It went direct to video in the States, but that does't mean it's bad. It's the creepiest movie I've seen in a very long time. The only drawback is some cheesy CG at the end, but otherwise, it's pretty unpleasant and unrelenting, with lots of atmosphere.

Alucarda

Directed by Juan López Moctezuma
Written by Alexis Arroyo
Starring Tina Romero, Susana Kamini, Claudio Brook
R • 1975 • 78 minutes

Okay -- it's not scary. And it's only marginally nunsploitation -- orphans possessed by Satan/goatman-gypsy, a requisite death by exorcism, remaining orphan opens a can of whoop ass on the nuns. You know. The standard drill.

The movie scores bonus points for flagellation and for having a line sampled/song titled by (My Life with) The Thrill Kill Kult ("And this is what the devil does"wink.

Please drink every time one of the orphan girls shrieks "Alucarda!" or "Justine" or "no!" Trust me. Sweet liquor eases the pain.

Also, if anyone can figure out why the nuns are dressed like bloody-crotched mummies, I'd love to know.

Holy crap!!! How could I have forgotten "2001 Maniacs"! Its being remade even, but its about these college kids who take a wrong turn and end up in some redneck town that proceeds to kill, maim and dismember them in crafty and fun ways. Its quite the disturbing eye candy. Its so 70's low budget with the bright red paint-like blood, I can't remember if there is gratuitous nudity but thats OK cause there's a guy who is stuffed in a barrel which has nails driven through it and then his ass is kicked over a hill which sends the barrell-a-rollin'!!! Good flick.

When I was working in the video store, my boss pulled the horror movies that weren't renting and put them in a $4.99 bargain bin. People were buying some of the best-of-the-worst horror movies. One of the videos that stayed in the bin (it was still there when I left the job in May) was "Monkey Shines." That friggin' monkey killing everyone is horribly unbelievable. It looks horribly disappointing. I hope someone spent $4.99 on it just to find out what a collosal waste of time it was.

You know, I bet it's still in the bin of doom, where crappy unrented movies go to die.

Saw "Popcorn" once on cable. Film class is restoring an old movie theater where a cult murder occurred. The closer they get to the Grand Re-opening, the more people get killed. They hold a film festival of old horror movies, allowing the writers to pay homage to such greats as William Castle, Vincent Price, and various in-theater gimmicks. Turns out the killer is the only survivior of the cult killings and subsequent fire. Sucks on toast. Would have been better if it was about a popcorn monster attacking teenagers trapped overnight in the world's largest multiplex theater. Then the monster could have been the vengeful spirit of an old theater owner who was killed so his ramshakle Art Deco movie house could be razed to make way for the suburb-sized monlithic tribute to overpriced Junior Mints and Joel Schumacher (thunderclap, horse whinnies) travesties. I would have gone to see it.

Also, I watched that movie 'Dead and Breakfast' a new movie that I rented. It has a 1 star from me, I like the effort, but the jokes were too obvious, they broke the three rules of zombie makin, and all of their jokes were pretty much copied from other people, like the zombies dancing like they were outta thriller, that was just wrong!! No, I'm right. I've heard both sets of theme songs more than enough times to be able to tell them apart (not to mention the themes of the other incarnations: The New Scooby-Doo Show, Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Whats New, Scooby-Doo? and if we're counting it in name only: Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics)

Here are the lyrics to the theme of the original show, "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?"

Scooby-Dooby Doo
Where are you?
We got some work to do now
Scooby-Dooby doo
Where are you?
We need some help from you now

C'mon Scooby-Doo
I see you
Pretendin' you got a sliver
You're not fooling me,
'Cause I can see
The way you shake and shiver

You know we got a mystery to solve
So Scooby-Doo, get ready for your act
That's a fact!
And Scooby-Doo if you come through
You'll have yourself a Scooby Snack
And that's a fact!

Scooby-Dooby Doo
Here are you
You're ready and you're willing
If we can count on you, Scooby-Doo
I know we'll catch that villain.

And here are the lyrics from The New Scooby Movies, the song that appears on the jukebox:

Hey, Scooby!
Scooby Scooby-Doo
Lookin' For you
Scooby Scooby-Doo,
Where are ya?

"Over here!"
All the stars are here
Waitin' for you
Couldnn't have a show without ya.

Scooby
Scooba dee doo
Scooby
Scooba dee doo

Lala
Lala La La
La La
Lala La La

Scooby,
Scooba dee doo
"Hey Scooby!"
"Where are you?"
"Over here!"

And there you have it. While both themes are good (my personal favorite is the original "Where Are You?" theme), It's pretty hard to confuse them. Altough you might have been referring to "The New Scooby-Doo Show" which had similar lyrics to "The New Scooby Movies"

I read through the whole list and I don't think that I saw these films listed:

Manos, The Hands of Fate

MST3K fans know about this movie. All I can say is that this movie will give you nightmares and you'll never want to see it again as long as you live!!! Is it because the film will scare you with it's plot? Or is it because the acting/filming/sound/storyline is so terrible?

The Tingler

Vincent Price stars in this movie about the truth as to why people die of fright.

Kingdom of the Spiders

William Shatner stars in a movie filmed in Arizona about you guessed it...Spiders! Very funny movie (not meant to be funny but I found it funny), with a cool ending.

Kolobos

Stars Amy Weber (Who is hot!!!!) and has that MTV "Real World" feel to it. I enjoyed watching the people die in this film, since I hate any type of show from MTV.

One of the people here posted a medium-sized list...I had seen some of those movies on IFC a few weeks back (Boogens, Humanoids From the Deep, Slumber Party Massacre, Bloody Valentine, April Fool's Day). Great horror films. smile

Also, to the person who mentioned Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter...I was at my local Hastings today and saw that DVD and laughed at the title. Is the movie any good?

I have a candy tradition that I try to keep every year. I get the eyeball gum (somone here mentioned it already) since I like how it tastes and because it looks like an eyeball. They are getting harder and harder to find, but for the last two years Target has had them. Before I used to find them at K-Mart.

And I recently found out that the reason Torgo walked like that is because he was supposed to be a Satyr, not just an insane cripple. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

That last sentence makes sense on some level, I guess.

Wha-a-a?? 130+ comments and no mention of "The Convent"? Any movie that has Adrienne Barbaeu seeking shotgun vengeance on demonically possessed nuns is A-OK in my book... plus it has one of the best mushroom trip sequences I've ever seen.

...just give it fiiiiive minutes...

A little late to the party but...

I was actually going to mention The Convent as my first choice, Miklo. I watched it for the Adrienne Barbeau-ness of it, but was pleasantly surprised by it's super cheesiness. I mean, zombies with glowing veins and teeth? The worst Satan worshipper in history? Coolio??? Come on! It's a classic.

Session 9 was totally creepy. I wasn't expecting much - I mean, how good can it be if it's starring HoCaine? But it was really good. It's kinda like Momento - it makes more sense on the second watching.

I love the stomach pump/razor straw scene from Dr. Giggles. One of the best horror movie deaths ever, IMHO.

My only original suggestion is actually reserved more for it's cheesiness than it's scariness. I'll offer it up anyway. Amanda and the Alien. Stars Stacy "Dad from Titus" Keach and Nicole "I slept with Corey Haim and lived to tell about it" Eggert. These people were all about the camp. The best part is the cappaccino steamer and some sex-having guy climaxing at the same time.

Was Cutting Class the one where Brad's class ring shows up in the photocopies of the murdered teachers Xeroxed face? Or was that the one w/ George "Norm! from Cheers" Wendt taking a sharpened pencil in the ankle after going insane? Or, are they the same movie? I'm too lazy to look it up.

How on earth could no one mention "Chopping Mall"?

Plot Summary for
Chopping Mall (1986)
A group of teenagers that work at the mall all get together for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall accidently goes on lock down before they can get out, The robot security system activates after a malfunction and goes on a killing spree. One by one the three bots try to rid the mall of the "Intruders". The only weapons the kids can use are the supplies in other stores. Or...if they can make it till morning when the mall opens back up

I'll make two suggestions:

1. The Mutations. (1977?)
Stars Donald Pleasance and the guy who played the Good Dr. Who. It features real side-show freaks who help hide the hideous half-man half venus flytrap monsters the good Donald keeps making. Also, it has a mad scientist feeding bunnies to a giant plant that looks, sadly, like a giant vagina with teeth. Gah.

2. Satan's Little Helper (2005)
From the director of Squirm we get a film about a guy who dresses up like Satan on Halloween and while he's murdering people, he is befriended by a little kid in a Devil costume who thinks it's all a game. Can you believe there's actually a scene in a grocery store parking lot where the little kid cheers Satan to commit acts of mayhem by shouting: "Hit the Pregnant Lady! The Blind Guy! Yeah!"
Oh and in the end he dresses like Jesus.

Life is so good sometime.

Btw to follow up Paul's suggestion:
Chopping Mall (called Killbots here in Germany) was the first film by Jim Wynorski. If you don't know who that is, then you know nothing of terrible yet awesome films.

Gotta Love "Event Horizon" a sci-fi flick, but scared the shit outta me. I also recommend Rod Serling's "The Night Gallery" really good stuff.

Blockbuster has released a few collections of horror movies, the one I have is Pieces, some horror movie with a bondage-clad chick and a camera, and another featuring a succubus that looks scarily like Michael Jackson (now, not then). They're definately B movies, good for the blood and gore but the plot's a little lacking.
