No new articles this week, as I'm working feverishly on the site's Halloween-related goods, which spring back to life one week from today. If you're new to X-E and don't know what I'm talking about, it's our annual Halloween Countdown. Beginning with the 2003 Edition and continuing with the 2004 Edition, these were the spooky tributes to various facets of Halloween, posted daily until the big day. Old and new, anything and everything, past Countdown articles have covered it all, from five-cent spider rings to old Hallmark Halloween commercials and beyond. If you're into the holiday, it's a lot of fun and it's one of the few times I can hop up on the podium and scream about how hard I'm trying.
In 2003, I had no other job to speak of while doing the Countdown. In 2004, I had a full time job. In 2005, I have a full time job that requires much more of me than it did last year. For this reason, I've decided (with encouragement from several readers) to only do the Countdown on weekdays, thus affording me the opportunity to get a head start on the following week's entries during weekends. It's just a way to make sure everything comes together with maximum effort and with all the time needed, and I'm confident we're in for one spooky hell of a Countdown this year.
Because I'm "taking off weekends," that leaves a little room to have some fun. Though most weekends will slip by without a word, I'd like the first week of the Countdown to be special. That's where you come in. I recently reviewed Kool-Aid's Halloween Ghoul-Aid, and horror fans across the land salivated at the thought of the perfect punch-maker they could never have. Well, now you can! If you're good.
Yes, it's another ill-fated X-Entertainment art contest, with one grand prize winner taking home a sealed packet of otherwise unattainable Halloween Ghoul-Aid. And even if you lose, it's a chance to see your best crayon work immortalized on a website read by at least seventeen people.
The winner will be chosen by me, based solely and sincerely on which entry I felt was the best, most inspired and most interesting. On Saturday, October 17th, the grand prize Kool-Aid winner will be announced in a special weekend Countdown entry. His/her art will be on display along with 10-15 of the best runners-up. (Runner-ups?) If I'm shocked and awed by the amount of terrific entries sent in, there's a good chance that more will be posted. Kool-Aid is a lame prize, I know, but this is really just a chance for everyone to have some fun and break out the school supplies. One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season has always been drawing the Halloween season, so here's your chance to reclaim a lost glory and maybe win something that I cannot recommend drinking because it's so damn old. In fact, just to cover myself...
All entries must be received by Wednesday, September 14th. You've got plenty of time. When you're finished, send 'em here. Have fun, and get ready for too much Halloween stuff!

Um...why not digitally produced works of art? I could do some hilarious stuff with that.

It's not a rule, but the drawn ones always seem to be the top picks. But definitely don't go by that as a rule.

Hey Matt, since I teach 3rd grade, could I possibly exploit some of my students by having them draw some pics? They are usually a riot, and waaaaay better than I could ever do!

Yay, I love Halloween drawings. And I love X-E's Halloween season. Yay for everything!
Can't wait for the countdown, I love having new stuff to read. By the way, are the articles on the site ever going to be categorized where we can find them? Using the search button works, but only if you know what you're looking for. It's nice to find something and say "hey, I think I'll read this too."

While another XE holiday countdown is always a cause for excitement, Halloween is the last thing on my mind right now. I'm looking forward to reading the countdown, but I'm too busy to get a head start myself. :p

Brimming with ideas but time will tell if my artistic ability can keep up with the concept. I thought about bringing in some student ringers to do the actual drawing but then I would have to explain to them what I am doing, thereby killing any shred of credibility I have left.

Any chance you'd sign the pack of Ghoul-Aid with like a silver marker or something? Or do you think that would turn off some collectors since it kills the value ( and probably taste ). I know I'll be entering this, and it'd be the shiz-nite to get that as a prize!
Oh, and can't wait til the halloween countdown starts, definitely the best time of the year to slack on work and read tons of articles about shrunken head apples and sleestack costumes!

Halloween is coming and this is my fav time on your site...Often you review shit I wish I could find though, but never see in the store..Not even the drug store..
Chestnuts roasted by LordSorrow @ 09/05/2005 10:17 PM EST
Battlesnake, if anyone wants me to sign it, weird as it would be, I'd happily oblige.
LordSorrow: I've taken precautions this year to start collecting early, meaning I was after a lot of shit from years past. Too often during the previous Countdowns was I relying on what would be in stores, which has wildly dwindled. That said, I've already found a couple of gooood things available to most.

Is it at all possible that this year's Halloween countdown might showcase a "Monster Squad" review? To my knowledge, no such review exists on X-E, but I know it has to be one of the most requested. I always find it tacky and obnoxious whenever people request articles in the blog, but I nonetheless feel that I would be betraying the hallowed memory of Fat Kid if I didn't at least suggest it...
Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 09/05/2005 10:49 PM EST

To quote a wise man, "Giggidy giggidy gig-i-dy"! If it was just me I'd prefer the coloring in of coloring books like previous contests, but I think it'll be more entertaining to see what other X-Eers draw this way. Too bad I can't draw a flippin' thing. On a totally unrelated note, does The Blob count as a horror luminary....?
Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/05/2005 11:10 PM EST
BTW, did anybody do anything exciting for Labor Day? My roommate and I decided to have a small cookout last week and it sort of spiraled out of control to where we had something 30-35 people show up today. And we're in a little college-student-esque house too. It was fun but crazy for a while trying to man the grills and be a good host.
Oh yeah, and being in Wisconsin like a quarter of the people brought beer (and I'd already bought a 24-pack) so we literally have like probably 30-40 left-over beers in the fridge and cupbord now. And my other two roommates don't really like beer (but I do)....
Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/05/2005 11:52 PM EST
Gozer: It ain't a party/celebration/graduation/funeral/anything without beer!! Miller/Point/Old Milwaukee!! 30 packs $9.99 yeah!! BEER!!
oh, and a cheese tray, too.

and BRATS!!! OHHHH YEAH!!!!

::looks through sticker collection:: Wow... the closest thing I have to Halloween is a sheet of Mr Yuk and some scratch n' sniff pickles. I guess my character will have to succumb to food poisening.
As far as "doing anything exciting for Labor Day" I mainly watched CSI all day. But I did find an old potato chip commercial with Jason Alexander back when he had hair. That was kinda exciting.

Ahhh...Monster Squad. Two words: Ryan Lambert. He sent my elementary-school heart all a-flutter. It was probably the longest TV crush I ever had. He was on Kids Inc. and I adored him. My parents were scared to let me watch the movie, though, for a couple different reasons. I remember that when I finally got to see it, it was in a hotel room with free HBO. My mom managed to turn the TV (it must have been before they started bolting them down so religiously) towards the corner and everytime something would come on that she thought we were too young to see, she'd turn the TV away. My parents were pretty particular about what kind of things we could watch/listen to/etc. Still, she knew I had to have my Ryan.

kidneyboy: Good choice supporting quality Milwaukee beers. Since there were a lot of people I opted to buy the slightly-more-classy Miller Lite over my favorite cheap beer Pabst. But luckily some people brought Spotted Cow and Newcastle and Point (a beer from Steven's Point, WI), so the quality got a lot better.

Met this fine young thang
at the local Circle K
She made a date
for a half past eight,
and I said, What the Hey
So I journeyed to her crib
and I let myself inside
that chick was slouched down
on the couch
I think her brain was fried.
Couldn't even figger it out
She wouldn't even look at me
Then I saw her eyes
she was hypnotized
Cold glued to her TV
Said what's your problem
Baby doll
Let's have a little fling
She said Hey you fool now just be cool, I'm watchin that Gilligan's Isle Thang
ha ha
Isle Thang
Watchin' all night
Musta been a marathon
I was bummin'
Those shows kept comin'
Here's what was goin' on:
Those castaways were stranded
on this island out at sea
one of 'em called Gilligan
said let's name it after me!
He messed up every rescue
Man, that first mate was illin'
If I was one o'them castaways
I think I'd prob'ly kill him!
Just about that time
telephone began to ring
She said, Just let it
my machine'll get it
We're watching taht Gilligans Isle Thing!
I liked the Professor
He always saved their butts
He could build a nuclear reactor
from a couple of coconuts!
She said, "That guy's a genius"
I shook my head and laughed
I said, "If he's so fly, they tell me why
He couldn't build a lousy raft"
And while we're on the subject
I'll tell you one thing for sure
Those homeboys brought an awful lot
For just a three hour tour
Then her mom came in the room
It was kind of embarrasing
She said, "Hey you two, I was once like you
And I loved that Gilligan's Isle thang"
Isle thing
She'd watch that Gilligan's Isle thing
Please, baby, baby, please
Skipper's in a hammock
He's looking kinda fat
He'd throw a fit and then he'd hit
Old Gilligan with his hat
Mrs. Howell had it goin' on
But Mr. Howell was meaner
Ginger and Mary Anne could've used
Some funky cold medina
I was really diggin' this show
I didn't know what to do
It kinda looked like I was hooked
Now I'm an addict too
I know each episode by heart
Now I'm the rerun king
And on every date we both stay up late
And we watch the Gilligan's Isle thing
I lip-synced that song for the YMCA camp talent show when I was in like fourth grade or some shit! Crazy good times, the people that came on after me lip-synced to Unbelievable by the KLF? i think that's who did it...
R.I.P. Maynard G. Krabbs

I've never heard that interpretation of Wild Thing by Tone Loc. Nice one!
Chestnuts roasted by Bob Abooey @ 09/07/2005 07:38 AM EST
Yeah, it's weird. When I think Bob Denver, I immediately think Maynard before I think Gilligan. When I was a kid and Dobie Gillis was on Nick at Nite I watched it all the time, but (and I know this is considered sacrilege to my fellow TV buffs) I've never been that into Gilligan's Island. Well, farewell to another TV icon.

Can't wait for the Halloween countdown, I'm hoping the ghost with the most will return this year. Too bad you don't have more time... Madd Matt could make an appearance.
Anyway, this is what I consider to be "the most wonderful time of the year" on X-E. We kick things off with Halloween, move into Thanksgiving, and end with a big bang for Christmas/New Years. I'd say this is the time of the year when X-E starts to shine the most.
With all these things, two characters come to mind: Garfield & Charlie Brown. Why? Because both of them are here for the long haul, not just Christmas. They're around for all three of the upcoming holidays and I can't even think about one of them without picturing Garfield boating through the fog in a pirate costume or hearing Charlie Brown proclaim that he has once again got a rock. I'm not really sure where I'm going with this, I just wanted to ramble for a minute about the connection between these two and the holidays for whatever reason and I hope to see both of them show up on the countdown at some point this year.
Now bring on the junk food and horror movies and take trips to spooky places and shit like that.

I'm sure there are a bunch of procrastinators here (myself included.) The number of entries will probably increase dramatically during the last couple of days.

Yeah Lori's right, I KNOW there's a lot of procrastinators on here... didn't we all admit that in a thread not too long ago? My entries are planned but not drawn. Hopefully I'll have time to get one or two finished this weekend.

I can't wait for the Halloween stuff to begin. I'm really looking forward to that night where I can pass candy out, that is if anyone actually bothers to show up at my door step (I think trick or treaters avoid trailers.) and watch my favorite TOON..It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown for the umpteenth hundreth time.
Sigh, thank god I have my cartoons.

Matt: How about a review of the old tv show Freddy's Nightmares? I have avi's of the first 4 episodes, and I could probably get a few more if you want them.

Hey all,
Been reading this site for a few months now, but I think this is actually my first time posting here. I just sent off my entry to the contest and I just had to say how amazingly rad this contest (and site) is. Yes that’s right; Rad. I’m really looking forward to seeing everybody’s pictures. Can’t wait to see the Halloween countdown. Keep it up Matt…

I was so worried that Matt wasn't going to be pulling the big Halloween bash this year, what with all the voodoo we've been seeing over the past 9 months. Now that worry has been replaced with joyous anticipation. Rock on.
Plus I'm very happy that I don't have to draw Dracula coming out of a pumpkin this year. Gah.

Speaking of spooky Halloween-themed foods, I went into Target the other day and found cans of Halloween flavors of Jones Soda. And not just 1 flavor...4!! Unfortunately, I can't remember what those flavors were, except for 1: Candy Corn. I tried going to the Jones Soda website to see what the others were, but they have no info on it.
I hope they come out with another Thanksgiving gift pack like last year, 'cause I missed out on it.

A reader tipped me off on that and I immediately ran to Target -- wasn't available yet, but I'll be checking again this weekend.

I don't exactly remember the Zelda TV show, but I definately remember the Captain N show. Reading through one of X-E's old articles it looks like Captain N and Zelda were some sort of dual show - is this the same Zelda show that's coming out on DVD?

Let me see....I haven't posted on the Blog since I was in the states...so that was almost three years ago. It's nice to see that people are still posting about Nathan Bitner...or that's very, very scary. I'm not sure which. Btw it's completely surreal to be remembered.
It's so infinitely lame that the thing I miss most about America is all the random stupid crap you can buy...particularly edible themed crap. The best we get here in Berlin runs on a serious delay. For example: The stores in Berlin just got "Catwoman"-themed food items. That movie's from...what, two years ago?
Random German thing I noticed: I don't know if it's the laws about not bioengineering food or having to be honest about what you put in it, but Germany does not believe in marshmallows in their cereal. We've got everything else....but if it's got anything even remotely resembling a marshmallow in it, you won't see it here.
It's so lame what I miss.

The Zelda show being put out on DVD is from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Link Zelda and Ganon DID cameo in a couple episodes of Captain N tho.
The shit I remember at times amazes me. HA! and they say pot effects the memory. :-X
