08/30/2005 Entry: "Tuesday Update?!"

I'm getting pretty tired of seeing the blog updated only during the weekends, so I can imagine how some of you might feel. So look! Tuesday update! Don't really have much to say, but...TUESDAY UPDATE! Oh yeah, I updated the Kool-Aid Section with a shortie on Kool-Aid Kool Pumps, a Sharkleberry Fin-flavored treat offered at Burger King restaurants in 1991. TUESDAY UPDATE!

I hate to be a redundant broken broken record record, but I'm reallllly getting psyched for the Halloween season. I do this to myself every year. Trust me, it's a lot different when your holiday seasons are spent writing about holiday seasons everyday. I'm toying with the idea of doing the Halloween Countdown every other day this year, but I hate to break tradition like that. We'll see how it goes. Actually, this is a good question to ask -- which would you prefer? Updates every other day, or updates on every weekday with the weekends off? Perhaps the latter makes the most sense. It would be ideal for me to have Sats and Suns to write the following week's worth of entries. It's a lot to do in a weekend, but I'd rather have the extra time and have them come out the way I'd like than write them all when I get home from work. We'll see. I may still end up doing them everyday, because in my mind, that's the tradition and it should stay. Especially because I've already collected better loot for this year's extravaganza than the past two years combined.

Also on that note, I may need a good hand to help out with a few graphics for this year's Countdown. Nothing too fancy, but if you've got serious skills, send me an e-mail. You'll need to be able to do stuff as funky as what's on the main page of the site. Haven't thought about what this would pay. Not much. Consider it a labor of love.

Surrrrvey Sez! If you could only have one candy bar for the rest of your life, what would it be? I'm going with Snickers.

I'm thinking Whatchamacallit. King-size, if I can choose. Yummm...

Chestnuts roasted by JoshW @ 08/30/2005 08:05 PM EST

I think the weekday thing is a better idea...that way we can drift to the non-weeny on the weekends if we need the break (perish the thought) and we won't have confused people clamboring for updates on the off days like we might on the other schedule.
I'd probably go with Snickers as well, but I'm more of a sugar lover than a chocoholic. Whoever says plain Hershey's is boring, and probably destined to marry whoever says Take Five.

fourth!!! anyone remember Sky Bars? Yum.

Yeah, weekdays sound good. Way I see it, even if I only got three done on the weekend, that would leave me until Wednesday to get the other two finished. Not that there isn't something to be said for the seven-days-a-weekers, but using last year as the barometer (since I had a job as opposed to the previous year), there were a few rushed and/or uninspired updates that were all due to lack of time.

We should all brainstorm a few fun art contests and things of that sort, too. smile

Baby Ruth. Yum. Try freezing it and then breaking into chunks. Messy, but so tasty.

Twix. It's the only candy with the cookie-crunch, bee-yitch.

The new Take 5 bars are pretty rockin'....or KitKats

Smarties bars.. smile Do you guys have those in the US?

Well, back to Thundercats.

Chestnuts roasted by Cyanyde @ 08/30/2005 09:11 PM EST

Never heard of a Smarties bar...what's in it?

Chestnuts roasted by Maria @ 08/30/2005 09:11 PM EST

Was tempted to say Twix. Same with Reese's Pieces. But if I had to survive on one and one only, Snickers gets the nod. It's the peanuts.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/30/2005 09:12 PM EST

Ooooh the coloring contest was just so fun last time! I was just backing up my hard drive when I came across last year's entries with the punching Draculas and was simply gleeful. We should think of some really good projects this year. I'd make an applehead but those things freak me out. (I'm sure people will be wanting to link to pics oftheir decorations...photobucket.com, ladies and gents.)

One of those gigantic lollypops. They last forever, and there's always the chance that a girl can enjoy/lick me.

Chestnuts roasted by Warx @ 08/30/2005 09:22 PM EST

I like the weekday with weedends off idea. I would get too confused if you just went on alternating days. Im easily confused.

Chestnuts roasted by Jenna @ 08/30/2005 09:32 PM EST

Something about mixing 'candy' with 'bar' sounds very unappealing to me, assuming it's not spelled 'unapealling'. I guess it's because your typical bar comes in your typical chocolate variety, which I find typically gross.
I'm a fruit-flavors man Myself.

Okay, Halloween story. So our dogs are drinking from an empty Halloween candy bowl, right? Because, the dogs need water and well... they can't really complain. But whenever I walk by it, observing the jack-o-lanterns now sumerged in a mixture of tap water and dog saliva, it somehow sparks my Halloween nostalgia unit. Come to think of it, a lot of things do these days.

This is the first Halloween in a while where I won't have a website to decorate, even though admittedly, I'd never gotten much traffic in the first place, it all feels a bit disappointing. But at least now there's X-E.

And that dog bowl. I envy those dogs.

Chestnuts roasted by Wyatt @ 08/30/2005 09:37 PM EST

Oh, and I guess I forgot to comment, that I also like the weekday updates with weekend off idea better.

And if the option were extended to just plain "candy", I think it'd be a tie between chewy-runts and something gummy.

ALSO: I don't want to seem presumptuous, but last October I spent an incredible amount of labor and eventually killed around 6 people out of frustration in making a Halloween themed video for this one old (now dead) website.

It turned out pretty mediocre, but it has a good Halloween ambience. Obviously I'm not asking you to review it or anything, but would you like to see it, at least? Sorry if it seems kind of out of line for me to ask.

Chestnuts roasted by Wyatt @ 08/30/2005 09:46 PM EST

On the subject of the Holiday Countdowns (and I'm referring to the Christmas one, too), whatever works best for you and your schedule is fine by me.

As for the candy bar I can't live without, I must have eaten tons of the Double Chocolate Kit-Kats. I still see them every now and then, but last year, the grocery store I worked in seemed to be the only place in the South Jersey area that carried them. The white chocolate-coated Kit-Kats are tasty, too.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 08/30/2005 09:46 PM EST

Ha! I remember those International Chicken Sandwiches at Burger King. They were the long sandwiches like the "Original Chicken Sandwich" that they have now. There was the Italian: requisite Marinara and Mozzerella. The French: Ham and Swiss Cheese. The American: Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, and American Cheese. I think there may have been one more, but I can't recall what it was. Maybe someone could help out.

Chestnuts roasted by T.J. @ 08/30/2005 09:49 PM EST

I vote for weekends off with weekend blog assignments.

I like surveys and contests. How about something new lik a "name that random halloween image night".

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 08/30/2005 10:10 PM EST

A few peanuts do indeed go a long way. Snickers places as a very close second after Twix in my book, with Kit-Kat taking the bronze. Milky Ways suck.

Matt, I do wish that X-E was already adorned in its traditional pagan finery in anticipation of the impending Halloween season, because then I wouldn't feel like such a dope for already having my apartment decorated with pumpkins and cardboard skeletons in August.

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 08/30/2005 10:20 PM EST

Bite-size Snickers, the kind that get dropped in your halloween bucket.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 08/30/2005 10:28 PM EST

Krackel - they're like the unofficial Christmas candy bar. Don't even THINK about telling me any different.

Yeah, I like the M-F schedule as well. X-E from Oct-Jan is my fav time, since Halloween and the holiday season are just ripe with nostalgia.

Chestnuts roasted by Jeff Mack @ 08/30/2005 10:59 PM EST

Ah yes, Krackel does bring the Christmas cheer. I associate as much with birthday parties as I do Christmas, but that would be a contender if it had chewy caramel and peanuts.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/30/2005 11:01 PM EST

Which candy bar would I recommend? Well, if you like picking sticky shit out of your teeth for half an hour afterwards, I'd recommend eating a Butterfinger.

Seriously though, I'd go with good ol' Twix. Sure, those two bars are pretty small, but there's just something subconsciously pleasing about having two chocolate bars in one package. Hmmm...

Chestnuts roasted by A.J. Poirier @ 08/30/2005 11:05 PM EST

Reeses Peanut Butter Cups all the way!!! I could eat those for the rest of my life...though I am sure that would shorten what I have left of it.

I'm now toying with the idea of adding a section to the bottom of each Countdown article where we can post assorted Halloween-related artwork -- cheesy crayon kinda stuff. I'm guessing we can get 30 nice "entries" if needed from the various folks on here.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/30/2005 11:40 PM EST

Cookies and Cream and Mint Hershey bars are the best!

I want a coloring contest!!! Don't ask why, but those were always fun. Remember the poster contests we did in elementary school during Fire Safety Month? I hope that wasn't just my elementary school!

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 08/30/2005 11:49 PM EST

yea, i'd go every other day. There should be a contest to see who can draw the best halloween themed dog picture. Tjat would be cool. Because dogs dont celebrate halloween, unless the drink from jack-o-lantern candy things. Then they do celebrate. All year long.

Chestnuts roasted by BetterThanFew @ 08/30/2005 11:52 PM EST

I'd say we'd get 30 easy.
I've gotta tell you guys how awesome it is to be able to read about everyone's favorite candies while I'm sitting in class watching boring movies. I'm sorry to brag, but mobile X-E is absolutely the shit.

Let's make this short and sweet. 1.) Weekends off is cool, but we know I've always been a kissarse. 2.)Watchamacallit. 3.)New Our Lady Peace...well yesterday now that I check the clock! 4.)Blasphemous but I've been listening to Take This To Your Grave all day instead of it. Pete Wentz you have a new disciple.

For candy bar I'll say Mars/Snickers almond, since they changed the name. But if I could only have one candy I would have to say gummi bears. T.J. I remember those sandwiches. I think I tried the Itallian one and the French one. Matt, I don't mind if you update every other day or on the weekends.

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 08/31/2005 12:34 AM EST

I also vote for weekday updates with weekends off. Besides, we can always do the Weekend Anything Goes thread you've been doing lately.

Although I also prefer fruit candy, Candy-Bar wise, I pick Milky Ways. Speaking of candy bars, we had our annual state fair a couple of weeeks ago and I had my first DEEP-FRIED SNICKERS BAR on a stick. BEST FOOD ITEM EVER. I was in heaven. They also had deep fried oreos, ho-hos, twinkies, and other assorted candy bars. YUM.

I now look forward to watching more of the videos!!!! I plan to go through the archives.

Milky Way (Mars Bars to our U.K. Friends)... all the way!

I think a Halloween update every other day would be fine. It still keeps a regular schedule without giving you overload.

And by the way, I don't think I ever told you great the Castle Dracula article turned out. A better eulogy couldn't have been written for the place, & I don't grieve over it as much anymore.

Also yay for guest spots on the fight scenes list!

I like Big Hunk. One of these days it's going to pull out all my teeth.

But my vote is gonna have to go Almond Joy for this one. I could eat those all day everyday and die happy... probably lol

Also i'm also with the majority on this one for weekday updates. smile

Since I'm all about procrastinating at work, weekday updates gets my vote. I like the idea of having the contests or project type posts on Fridays, though, so people could be engaged with x-e halloween goodness over the weekend if they so desire, with no extra work for Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by Jimbalaya @ 08/31/2005 07:28 AM EST

I like the weekday option. But also like boring saturday nights as well.
If it wasn't a tooth killer I'd say Carlston Chew Vanilla was my favorite, but since I never eat it any more I'll go with Pearson's Nut Goodie

KitKats definitely. Doesn't matter the size: BigKats, littleKats...whatever...as long as it's a KitKat.

Chestnuts roasted by Marzipan @ 08/31/2005 08:50 AM EST

I'm voting for Violet Crumble. Partially because the only place I've ever seen it is in Australia, and I like the idea of every candy bar I eat becoming a matter of international intrigue.
And I'm all for halloween-related art projects this season. I mean, I have no discernable talent or ability, but at least I've got enthusiasm.

Chestnuts roasted by B-Dawg @ 08/31/2005 09:05 AM EST

Gotta go with Snickers too. It's probably not my favorite candy bar, but it's the old standard. I think my current favorites (Milky Way Midnight, Mounds) are different enough that I think I'd get tired of them. If that makes sense. I don't think I'd get too tired of Snickers.

Milky Way Midnights are yummy. When I was younger they used to have them as ice cream bars too...and they served them in the school cafeteria! Yum! I feel bad for all these kids today that are stuck with carrot sticks and other assortments of *ugh* healthy foods!

Remember those staples of the cafeteria that were ice cream sort of dipped in bits of crunch stuff? You could either get chocolate or strawberry coated. I didn't describe that very welll...

Chestnuts roasted by purplegirl247 @ 08/31/2005 10:05 AM EST

Purplegirl, sounds like you could be referring to the "Strawberry Shortcake" bar, and its cousin, "Something Named After Chocolate."

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/31/2005 10:11 AM EST

Purplegirl: Sounds like you're describing something that is still being made here by Blue Bunny. It was either strawberry or chocolate ice cream on a stick that had something in the center ans is coated in those crunchy bits. Wish I knew what it's called.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 08/31/2005 10:24 AM EST

I hate to be a conformist, but Snickers all the way. That's mainly because they don't make Bar None anymore. I'm not much of a candy eater, and I appreciate chocolate bars that aren't sickeningly sweet, or at least have enough stuff in them to create a complex flavor. My three runners up? Mounds, Pay Day, and Chunky.

Purplegirl, I absolutely know that ice cream. Good Humor makes them (Chocolate Eclair and Strawberry Shortcake respectively). Cute story - when I was in middle school, I'd never had a strawberry one. My school didn't sell them, but the elementary school did. One day my well-intentioned little sister got some money and decided to buy me one and keep it in her bag all day long until she got home (plus the 90 extra minutes it took for me to get home.) To its credit, the thing was completely melted and not a drop got out of the wrapper. She felt so sad that I refroze it and ate it. It actually still tasted pretty good.

Hey Matt,

Guys and Gals of XE please pray for all of the people displaced by the hurricane. It is worse than what you see on TV. I live in the north part of the state and the number of people that have evacuated here is astounding. Me and the wife are going to volunteer time and resources for the next few weeks to do what we can. Please pray for us all.

On another note, I am now jacked about Halloween, like you Matt, I live and die for Oct. 31. I have spent the better part of the summer after work and weekends building huge props and getting ready to make those kids earn their candy as they enter my grave yard.

Also, snickers is the best all time but twix have to be a close second!

I'm one for the weekends off routine. Then, Mr. C can just come up with Hallow-themed Saturday Survey questions for us.
Count me as seconding the love for Zero, the original "Inside-Out Candy Bar." Of course I hope the question means that it would be the only obtainable confection for the remainder of my lifespan. Otherwise, it have to be one hhuuuuugge Zero bar to last the rest of my days.

I'd be happy with updates every other day since a) I work full time in NYC as well and don't want to look at a computer screen when I get home and sure you feel the same way and b) sometimes I don't get to your site everyday anyway so then I have a backlog of countdown days to go back to...BUT this is just my opinion and do whatever's best for you...and regarding the survey? Nestle's Crunch or Mr. Goodbar

Chestnuts roasted by Melissa Y. @ 08/31/2005 01:01 PM EST

The best candy bar ever is Hershey's Symphony with Almonds and Toffee Chips. Not the little ones, the HUGE ones that are the size of like 5 normal bars. It's even better straight out of the freezer and smashed into little crunchy, frozen bits. Aww yeah.

Chestnuts roasted by Annie @ 08/31/2005 01:23 PM EST

Have to go with Snickers as well. It's got everything you could possibly want in a candy bar, but it is by no means a "jack of all trades, master of none" situation. Snickers has got everything, but it's a GOOD everything.

Chestnuts roasted by Jen @ 08/31/2005 01:28 PM EST

You know, I put WAY too much thought into it, and I can't think of a better "deserted island" candy bar than Snickers. It's got it all. Peanuts, chocolate, caramel. I do like my variety, but if it's gotta be just one, you've got to go with 'ol reliable.

Matt,

Your (Halloween - Thanksgiving - Christmas) run is the time of year I most look forward to logging on to X-entertainment. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and suggest that you update every day. It doesn't have to be a full article - if you are short on time - just post some spooky music - or a scary story. Anything. It will be worth it. Thanks.

Chestnuts roasted by Mike @ 08/31/2005 02:30 PM EST

Even if we end up with a weedays-only run, the blog will definitely be updated on weekends with more spooky stuff.

I gotta go with the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. You get two in every pack, so you can always save one for later if you didn't inhale the first one. Sometimes I get all Hannibal Lechter with it and cut the peanut butter cup like a little pie and eat it slice by slice.

I've tried the inside out ones, and the balance of the tastes is wrong for me.

The Big Cup I like, but they only give you one of those.
It's my theory somehow they merge them, with MAD SCIENCE that Humans were not made to mess with. But I know there are two peanut butter cups in every big cup. I can feel it. It's a gut hunch.

As for Halloween updates, you don't have to do them every day.
It's not a job. This is for fun. If you want to put a little something up every day and take the weekends off, that's cool. If you want to just make a mega post on a Saturday or Sunday that's fine, too.
If it's not stalkery, let us know if you went to a haunted house or found a neat costume website. Or bought a dremel to carve a pumpkin or something.
Halloween rocks, and the season oughtta be two months long. Every year it's like a race and I'm straining at the starting line for the pistol to go off.

Thanks for having such a great site!

JLAJRC, thanks for the link. I don't think it ever occurred to me that I could ever have the chocolatey goodness as an adult (or pseudo-adult as the case may be).

Lori, your story about your sibling is classic.

And finally, while I'm being chatty, I agree that updates are precious and should be savored...unlike candy bars, which apparently we all wolf down like animals! I'm a big fan of the Reese's Cup, as well as its sister, the Pieces. I also love Heath bars but they tend to get stuck in your teeth, and that always slows down the enjoyment factor.

Chestnuts roasted by purplegirl247 @ 08/31/2005 04:55 PM EST

No problem Purplegirl.

Speaking of purple, I just tried the new Mountain Dew Pitch Black II and it's pretty good. I didn't find the original version to be that special, but the tang in this makes it pretty tasty.

I hope they bring back the Pepsi Holiday Spice but from what I hear I doubt it will happen. That was AWESOME.

Ok, I have no time to read allll those posts, like I'd normally do. I'm running on about 10 hours of sleep in the past 3 nights.

For the countdown, we'll love it any way you decide to do it, Matt smile Whatever works best for you.

Candy Bar - Well, being vegan puts a damper on that, so I'll answer it two ways. Before I was vegan, I would've picked a Hershey's Symphony Bar, most likely. Purely delectable milk chocolate all by its' lonesome, or with toffee and almond, I think. Now, the closest thing I eat to a candy bar is called a Luna Bar (Nutz Over Chocolate flavor, please!) They are really yummy, and good for you. big grin

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/31/2005 11:07 PM EST

The BEST EVER Reese Cups were the ones that came in the 3 packs that you'd sell for school fundraisers. They seemed bigger, and way fresher - like a fancy, deluxe version of itself.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/31/2005 11:10 PM EST

Well, that one's easy: Orange Aero (which, I think, is officially called "Aero Orange"wink, the very special kind of Aero, which is a milk chocolate bar originating in Britain, with a bubble texture inside that they only seem to sell a couple of times a decade here in Canada (though it's a constant in England). The orange version has a nice tangy (faux) orange flavour, and the bubbles are an eye-pleasing orange colour encased in a darker chocolate outer shell.

If anyone's wondering what Smartie's Bars are exactly, it's a chocolate bar containing Smarties, but the British/Canadian Smarties, which are candy-coated chocolate buttons that are essentially like larger, flatter M&M's. It's got nothing to do with American Smarties, the chalky candy things in rolls, which are known as "Rockets" in Canada.

As for graphics, this probably isn't what you're looking for, but I doing drawings of London city street scenes, and, incongruously, the occasional movie-based MS Paint picture. I also, after a long hiatus, recently tried my hand at cartooning again, drawing this drawing of an obscure anime character (Natsumi Tsujimoto from You're Under Arrest for those of you in the know) whacking that annoying "Mr. Opportunity" guy from the Honda Commercials in the nads with a baseball bat.

You know, tonight I sat down and tried to just do it all myself, and it hasn't come out too bad, really. Brian's busier than ever and won't be able to handle it this year, but it looks like we're safe. I don't plan on revamping the main page entirely (for reasons that should be obvious to any longtime reader), but rather revamp the look of last year's Countdown and add a section on the main page that links to it. So far, so good, but thanks as always, Steve!

How ARE those Reese's Big Cups, anyway?

Regarding the Halloween Art schtuff, it's definitely in top running to put an open call out for readers (well, readers of the blog, at least) to send in artwork to tag at the end of each Countdown entry. If not, there will definitely be a couple of dedicated days for it.

Continuing the Halloween prep discussion, does anyone have any ideas on what we could do with the blog during October? (I mean, aside from the obvious surveys, which are nice, but it'd be good to mix things up.)

This'll sound lame, but it's really no lamer than a Saturday Night Thread: I was thinking maybe everyone who was around on a particular night could watch the same horror flick while posting in the blog. The thread wouldn't necessarily have to be all about the movie, but it'd just be the background deal for everyone. And instead of having everyone dig out the same DVD, we could just pick shit off of television.

We'll see. Maybe worth a shot.

Chestnuts roasted by Jabo @ 09/01/2005 03:34 PM EST

I think you should do a couple of no-prize MS Paint "contests", either asking for straightforward renditions of specific frames or scenes from horror movies (perhaps revolving around themes like "Your favourite scene where the cool jock or popular girl gets killed."wink or putting characters and/or situations from horror films in a different context (i.e. "Put your favourite horror characters in your favourite cartoon."wink.

Also, I'm not asking you to bend over backwards to accomodate Canadian readers, but, for the "live" horror movie blog posting, if you do that, it would be cool if, just one time between now and October 31st, you can pick a film that's being aired on an American cable channel that Canadians, or at least those of us who aren't breaking the law prohibiting having grey-market subscriptions to DirectTV, can actually watch on Canadian cable/satellite TV services, like TBS or Spike TV.

No, I'm sorry Squee. I adore House. I'm all for tipping fairly (I overtip when I can), but Captain Spaulding is immortal, if just to me. I love Devil's Rejects even more than House. I wish it could have been a trilogy, and maybe it can (see my uber-optimistic post in the spoiler thread).

Remember, I live a life of Controversy. This is what I do. Revolutions is the best Matrix, High Fidelity is better than Say Anything, etc. etc. You know the drill.

Kneg,
I'm always pleased to hear others praising "House" and "Rejects" since what I normally hear from most people concerning those films is rancor and disgust. I thought that each film was outstanding in a way that only a film directed by a man obsessed with Frankenstein and serial-killers could be. For my money, the best line of any film of 2005 can be found in "Rejects" when Otis, after poking his nine-millimeter pistol down into the panties of a terrified, middle-aged female hostage, wonders aloud if her vaginal moisture will "rust the barrel". HI-larious.

Kidneyboy--did you ever see the Muppet show sketch w/the forest animals singing the song "Stop"???

They were being hunted and were singing it quietly, and every gunshot started that chorus "Stop children/what's that sound?/everybody look what's goin' down..." Is it me, or is that really DEEP for a Muppet Show skit? Quite impactful.

If anyone hasn't seen it, it's on one of the Best of DVDs-- Bob Hope, George Burns, and Dom DeLuise. It's in the 3rd ep, which is Bob Hope. It is so not Muppet-like, and I felt kind of humbled after seeing it. really good though.

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 09/02/2005 12:06 AM EST

Also, wasn't "Hawaiian War Chant," from the Muppet Show? It was in my dance recital in 6th grade, and a friend told me it was a Muppet Show song. I can't describe how it goes, but I was told about a rock that sings in the foreground.

The horse Bob Hope rode on in "Don't Fence Me In" was wearing sneakers. I think they were New Balances.

Also, Miss Piggy singing "Cuando La Gusta," was classic, and pretty much paved the way for Scott Bakula to sing it on "Quantum Leap" years later.

Tougi, my cousin and I would always mix peanut butter and sugar together. Along with honey. And corn syrup. And chocolate chips. And then you eat it with a spoon whilst watching Tiny Toons and Tazmania. Man, now I want a heaping bowl of the Special Peanut Butter Mixture. And for Tazmania to be on television.
