07/13/2005 Entry: "Lovin' the fuzz worms."

When I was very, very, very, very, very young, my favorite toy was tied between those little slimy figures found in A Bad Case of Worms, and the thing shown above -- another worm. I swear it's a coincidence; I've never been fond of worms otherwise. The one in the picture is new (called a "Wiggle Worm"), but the string-activated "pets" were once sold under another name, in fancier, action figure-esque packaging. (Fuzzzz-something?) I loved these worms, I really did. By using the almost-invisible string connected to the figure's snout-like nose, you could make it seem like the worm was moving under its own power. Or so the legend went. Personally, I was more fond of keeping the plastic-eyed cuties in my shirt pockets, a statement I'd stand behind much more firmly if I could remember wearing even a single shirt with a pocket.

Though they've always used cheap materials to make these, the current crop of fuzz worms aren't nearly as intricate as the ones I grew up hugging, with googly eyes and multicolored fuzz patterns. To me, those worms were alive. They were my friends. Since they were so easily damaged (both unintentionally and on purpose), I plowed through dozens of the things.

Think I'm done talking about that.

Thanks to all who've e-mailed in about their Halloween/Christmas goodies. I'm excited to report that there were a few good Hallo-related things in the mix -- if I haven't gotten back to you yet, I will this weekend. Is it wrong to be excited about the Halloween Countdown already? You know me, I can't help it. Last year's was a major challenge because I'd already started on the job, and I'm a bit fearful because the job is about, oh, 500,000x more intense now than it was back then. It's really just a matter of deciding on a schedule, sticking to it and staying ahead of personal deadlines. Writing against the wire usually isn't a good thing, and towards the end of last year's Countdown, I was writing too many of the entries on their "due date," or worse yet, after the fact. Oh jeez, why am I talking about this in July?

We live in a strange world: Outside at work today, I noticed an alarming amount of police cars. A LOT. Like, parked up on the sidewalks and everything, lights on and all. Opinion on why they were there was split between two things: It was either to answer some kind of terrorist threat, or to keep control over a crowd supposedly there to catch a glimpse of goddamn Halle Berry. We really are living through some odd times.

Uh, a survey, I guess: What's your worst habit? Could be something like smoking, could be something like lying. I have many, but the one that I really wish could be fixed is obsessing over the worst part of any situation rather than the best part, if that makes sense. Oh, smoking, too.

I didn't hack jack...I've been hanging out in this blog long enough to know what you little scamps get up to, though.
I remember a slightly similar beast that was simply a felt or furry cloth that would arch up as you were petting it thanks to static electricity. I have a memory of mom refusing to get one for me....couldn't have been more than a few bucks, the cheapskate.

Finding litle, minor faults with others. Speaking of which, Matt, *how* could you let the release of He-Man on DVD go unmentioned this long on your website? (It was released Tuesday.)It is AWESOME, I highly recommend it, even if you already have all the eps in Divx format off the various p2p services. The quality of the picture, the bonus features, menus, everything is immaculate. I only wish they would release the box sets sooner, the best 10 ep collection is a nice idea and is great and all, but I really wanted box complete sets from the beginning. Still, highly recommended.

Chestnuts roasted by Destro @ 07/13/2005 11:14 PM EST

You're right, that deserved a mention.

And I will be picking that up. I'm with you though: I'd rather get it season by season than a "best of."

Unless they really are the best eps. What's the lowdown there?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/13/2005 11:16 PM EST

Neat, Matt is on the board at the same time as I am. The new MOTU set consists of of the top ten eps as chosen by fans, on the he-man.org website. For the most part, I agree with the choices, though choosing just 10 would be difficult. Check out he-man.org for more info, and some discussion on it.

Haha I just realized I totally misread that. Actually everyone who finds out I smoke says the same thing, so I must give out a nonsmoker vibe. Newport 100s (in the box), for what it's worth.

Smoking and drinking. I smoke about 2 packs everyday. I also drink 3 or more times a week. Not just a few drinks I go to the bar and get hammered . Just a couple of the vices I am willing to discuss openly.

Um...I guess the fact that I "pinball between extremes" to quote ALL.

I'm either a dramatically over serious worrywart (e.g. Keanu or Hayden Christensen) or a completely embarassing goofball (e.g. Mark Hoppus and the pancake mix incident).

I can very rarely find a happy medium. The word bi-polar comes to mind. I try, though. I really do.

Matt, Did you get my email about the "aRe yOui afraid of the DArk?" tape with the very cool "Fear the Fear" music video. IO never got a reply from you to see what you thought about it. *puff, puff* pass...~

I lie. It's not something I like to do, and it's always just about little things that end up seeming trivial, but get way blown out of proportion because of my own dishonesty...whew. I feel refreshed now!!

Time for a bowl...er, Marb Medium Hard Pack I mean.

I got carded for papers the other night...like what am I going to be using them for...tobacco? Why do I have to be 18? For the record, I'm way over 18, I think the lady was just a prude that wanted to hassle me for buying papers...grrr.

I'm also overly critical of others, while not directly to their faces, it's just that I pick out peoples flaws, and they all irritate me to no end.

So, nice happy topic tonight, eh?

I saw The Village for the first time. That movie was so hyped, and it sucked bad. But then I went to Wal-Mart and got "9 to 5" and "What About Bob?" out of the $5 cheap bin!! SCORE!!

Chestnuts roasted by kidneyboy @ 07/14/2005 12:28 AM EST

Cyanyde...

I don't directly look at breasts...well I do, but not right when I'm talking face to face.

However, since I am hearing impaired, I look at their lips...on their face wink But, the fact that my eyes are not meeting their eyes, gives some girls a weird vibe. I also heard that one of my g/f's friends thought I was "shady" because I didn't always meet her eyes.

So I guess that could also be a bad habit. sad

It's nice to see Keanu gracing the blog sidebar smile

Seeing Keanu movies repeatedly in theatres makes my world feel normal (Fall 2004 was a wierd time in the world; and for me especially) and I think that's why I just adore Constantine. For me its up there with Revolutions and Sweet November.

I can't wait til the 19th.

Hey, talking about my obsessions, that's one of my bad habits! smile

Chestnuts roasted by Ramiel @ 07/14/2005 02:10 AM EST

Wha, Wha, Wha? Um couldn't you buy say 6 boxes of the cereal, for roughly 20 bucks and do that yourself.

So in essence, you're paying this guy 85 bucks (and rising) for labor.

My math may be liberal (I dunno if 6 boxes would yield a gallon of marshmellows), but I think you get the idea.

I know Matt taught us that you can sell anything on ebay. I mean at least buying ghosts in bottles seems interestingly stupid. This seems stupid stupid.

Wow...This is me exactly...I'm also hearing impaired, and have to look directly at a person's mouth most of the time, since I lip read so much...

Maybe that's why I haven't had much luck with the ladies?

As far as bad habits: I check to see if the door is locked about 500 times before I go to bed. Slightly obsessive complusive I guess...

>However, since I am hearing impaired, I >look at their lips...on their face But, the >fact that my eyes are not meeting their >eyes, gives some girls a weird vibe. I also >heard that one of my g/f's friends thought I >was "shady" because I didn't always meet >her eyes.

>So I guess that could also be a bad habit.

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 07/14/2005 04:07 AM EST

Well, like Cameron T. I'm slightly obsessive compulsive. Just little things, like when I'm eating cookies I usually eat an odd number of them instead of an even number. It's not something I even think about, it just happens.

I have a lot of bad habits I guess, but my worst is that I can't see the trees for the forest: I'll see a major result I'd like to achive but I have a hard time recognizing that getting there will take many, many little steps.

A lot of the time I end up so intimidated by the whole deal that I don't even try. It's something I'm trying to learn to deal with and get past.

A friend of mine once told me it's a problem that ambitious people sometimes suffer from. I guess I can see that.

By far, my worst trait is my tendency to procrastinate on almost everything (especially things I don't particularly want to do). Now you may think you procrastinate, but I take it to a whole new level.

I've always been like that but it reached its worse point during my sophmore year of college, I think (I've got a little over a semester left to go... I'll finish at some point). I was freaking out over a paper I was writing the night before, like always, and suddenly something inside of me just snapped. I got up from my computer and I took a nap.

I couldn't AFFORD to, but I did. It seemed like a really beautiful revelation at the time--that my health and happiness was more important than a goddamn letter grade--but it developed into a real problem. Like almost never turning anything in (and when I did you can bet it wasn't on time).

That's one of the reasons I'm taking time off from college right now. I figure college, unlike high school, isn't something I HAVE to do, so I shouldn't go back until I WANT to finish.

I'm still waiting for that spark of desire to LEARN to ignite.

Chestnuts roasted by Night_Trekker @ 07/14/2005 04:28 AM EST

Chestnuts roasted by Night_Trekker @ 07/14/2005 04:30 AM EST

I'm so pumped for Halloween. I can already feel it in the air. And even though Party City has only Back-to-School stuff on display, there are mountains of boxes being constructed in the back aisles. Some of these boxes are marked "Witch Brooms" and "Plastic Skulls", while still others contain "Remote Control Rats" and "Black Light Bolts". SO FRIGG'N PUMPED. In like two months (mid-late September) the drug stores will start displaying their merchandise...

As far as bad habits go: I always smell the bindings of books and magazines, even in public places. I don't know why. Old books especially smell good.

Smoking and impulse purchases.

Chestnuts roasted by King Peter @ 07/14/2005 08:44 AM EST

Let me just elaborate on "impulse purchases." I mean I impulse buy things like cars, electronics that cost more then a weeks pay, and toys, ohhhh the toys.

Chestnuts roasted by King Peter @ 07/14/2005 08:46 AM EST

I hate housework. I mean, I dread doing it. I'll let it go until the last possible minute. Some days I actually run around, picking up toys and vacuuming while mr. Traj is in his car on his way home from work. I just cannot force myself to do it. There are so many other enjoyable things to be doing. Who wants to wash another load of laundry? I have to wash 6-7 loads a week, plus do dishes twice a day to keep up w/ the slobs I live with. The kids can be just as lazy as Mr. Traj when it comes to cleaning up after themselves, so it seems like I spend my entire life maiding up behind them. And, since I'm not Donna Reed, I hate it.

Ok, I'm ranting. I'll stop. Breathe in... breathe out...

For both my vices I am to embarrassed to buy them locally (small town) so I acctually drive to another town and buy my Us magazine and Virginia Slims. (the most embarrassing ciggerettes to buy)
But when I am reading my Us and smoking my fags, I sure do feel as though I have come a long way, baby.

Smoking and drinking Bombay Saphire tonics.

Matt, the police cars up on the sidewalks is part of a terrorist deterrent program. They've had it outside my office building on 46th & 6th a few times. Basically, each day a bunch of cops park up on the sidewalk in a row and then hang out in the area. Usually 4-5 cars on each side of the street. They switch areas each day.

I find it a bit unnerving.

2) This past semester a final 15-20 page project was worth 70% of the final grade. It was so big that he ended the class a few weeks early so we would have plenty of time to do it. I started it at around 11:00am that day, after checking Fark and X-E, of course...

I too wrote the biggest paper of my college career the night before, senior thesis, senior thesis! But I also wrote all of my papers the night before, so there's that.

I was also in college for 5 years. Realized that I didn't want to do what I had been training to do for all that time, but I had already taken the classes requiring the most effort and I was a senior by then so I decided to finish.

The only thing I didn't procrastinate on were my duties as president of our major's club. And for that I would like to thank my opposite charge. She kept me from pulling a Rodimus Prime more times than I can count.

Hehe, I am a psychologist, but I'm not telling what I have to say.

As for my bad habits, I am a very morbid person, very critical of others, and a horrible procrastinator. I can relate to the stories of people not finishing papers because they were partying or napping, as I was much the same way. I once had a paper that was 100% of my grade in a class. I had the entire semester to work on it, and so naturally I finished it 2 minutes before it was due and emailed it to my professor.

I pick my nose as well. I obsess over details and interests. (The most embarrissing to admit now was figure skating back in the early 90s, during the whole Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan incident.) I overeat sweet baked goodies. I can't keep cookies or cake in my apartment, 'cause they'll vanish in a day or two (and I live alone). I bite my nails until they bleed (on my toes, too). I also drink milk directly from the carton, although I get away with this easier living alone. When I get pissed, I either burst into tears or throw something at the wall.

I had no idea they just put out the He-Man DVD. I'll definately have to look for that. I'm surprised it didn't come up here before, from someone on the blog if not from Matt.

Though I always look forward to Matt's holiday countdowns and related articles, Halloween isn't at the front of my mind right now. Not only is it not my favorite holiday (me being no great fan of horror), I can't bring myself to get into anything fall-ish until the tourists have all gone home and it's not hotter and more humid than Brazil down here.

Haha, like about 80% of us X-Etards
I am a dirty, dirty procrastinator. But I'm also a perfectionist and horribly nitpicky about details (I drive everyone at work crazy with the type-Aness of me) so my procrastination tends to cause me much frustration. Oh well, I like all the nothing I do when I'm procrastinating so I doubt I'll ever change!

Chestnuts roasted by Gabbylicious @ 07/14/2005 09:21 PM EST

Maybe this is the reason we're all such Pogo-Bal failures - we procrastinated too long in hopping. You think you put things like that off forever and everything will be ok but sooner or later people get hurt and an innocent an Pogo-Bal's reputation gets trashed.

Oh my God. What a rotten day I've had. I'll spare you the boring, painful details, but it includes this pay phone conversation:

Me: This the the tenth time I've called -- WHERE IS THE CAR?

Them: It's been sitting on 44th and 7th waiting.

Me: THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID THE LAST NINE TIMES. I'M RUNNING UP AND DOWN 44th HOPPING INTO EVERY LINCOLN TOWNCAR AND BANGING ON EVERYONE'S WINDOWS. WHERE IS THE FUCKING CAR?

Them: Sir, the driver is parked on 44th and 7th.

Me: I'M STANDING ON 44TH AND 7TH! IS THE FUCKING CAR FUCKING INVISIBLE?

Then made some blanket threats that I'd get Viacom as a whole to stop using this company.

Eventually, I got home. Broken.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/14/2005 10:28 PM EST

broken...but home!

deep breaths...smoke a cig...it's gonna be okay! We're here for ya, buddy! smile

Sorry to hear about your bad day, Matt. Maybe you can find a non-painful way to torture the cats to make you feel better. I play sample ringtones from the Samsung R225 to annoy mine. wink And before anyone says anything, I have 4 cats and love them all. Sometimes they just need a little torture to keep them in line.

Knegative, never fear that I'll get snippy over terms and diagnoses. I do appreciate your geeking, though, as it is a topic near and dear to my own heart. I haven't actually checked to see when the new DSM will be out. Now I'll have to go look.

"I pick my nose when I'm just with my family... It's a comfort zone." - My friend.

I dunno... I don't think I have any bad habits... >_>

Thanks for the understanding, Kieran. I was referring to the new edition of the APA manual, not the DSM. But hey, if you find out about the DSM, I wouldn't mind knowing.

I was in the animal learning business. Little need for the DSM, in my old neck of the woods smile

But the APA manual was my bible for 4 years. I was killing myself with all-nighters and insane qauntities of Mountain Dew. Our old friend procrastination was to blame for that. So, I changed the course of my life.

Choose life, choose a job, choose a career, choose a family, and all that wonderful sh*te, eh? razz

Allison: Don't worry, I'm a nonsmoker, too. It never interested me but after watching my grandmother die of emphysema I'm sure as hell not smoking anything as long as I live.

bad karma: Always happy to bring laughter to someone's life smile

Knegative: I've been in college five years, looks like it will end up being six... when I got back and get my worthless English degree big grin

Matt: If you ever show up on G4 you'll single-handedly raise the quality of that SHITTY channel.

On the off chance you see Tommy Tallarico, tell him: 1) his game music rules, and 2) he's a massive tool.

angsty cola: LAW AND ORDER! YES! My addiction!

starwenn: OKAY, okay, I pick my nose too sad

Gabbylicious: Same deal with me... I procratinate, but then whatever I finally come up with a few hours before the due date never meets my impossibly high standards, so I decide to take the letter grade off and perfect it. Same thing happens the next day.

Fast-forward a few years, and I've lost all my scholarships and I'm typically limping through all but one of my classes.

Oh man, that awful The Lost World show is on... you know, that piece of crap that comes on television at 6:00 AM on TNT? "The Drama Network" my ass.

Well, Rachel Blakely is easy on the eyes. At least she has that big grin

RE: Speilbergs transformers movie.

I hate to say this but ugh.

I can see the ending for the movie now...

Everyone lives, and they're all reunited under a rainbow while bunnies dance about tossing rose petals. (Maybe that war of the worlds ending made me bitter)

He's made some good movies, but I'd prefer someone with more of an edge. and someone who won't digitally change the movie 20 years from now and replace the guns with walkie-talkies.

Chestnuts roasted by selvig @ 07/15/2005 09:39 AM EST

Sorry, Knegative. I was distracted by my sister's kids and didn't read what you posted carefully enough. I too am chained to my APA manual, and I dread the thought of having to buy yet another one.

So in choosing life did you choose a starter home and matching luggage as well? wink

Oh, and Allison, I am also a non-smoker. I dated a lot of chain smokers, and I decided that the damage they did to my lungs would be enough without me adding to it.

Selvig, I couldn't agree with you more. I wish they'd let someone with more soul and less greed do the TF movie...I haven't been able to stand Spielberg since the ET debacle.

Wow, a Lincoln Towncar, that's so classy...unless it's on 26's and air brushed with louis Vuitton symbols.

Snapple Fact: The Pogo Bal is able to out run a Lincoln Towncar at speeds exceeding 20,000 miles per hour causing Pogoers to burst into flames.

Bad Habit: Cutting friendships short for lousy reasons.

Chestnuts roasted by Kennef @ 07/15/2005 11:11 AM EST

Kieran Alexis and Selvig- I couldnt agree more! Its not often I get an English movie on time here in Korea (we're usually slow getting them....like my Ep. III nightmare of waiting an extra week)
For some reason, though, 'War of the Worlds' opened here on time! So, I went to see it opening night and was sorely disappointed. The 1st half is GOOD! It's even scary, which was great. Then he goes and fucks it all up by trying to turn it into a family movie all of a sudden! When you have huge monsters destroying everything in their path, there's no need to make it pleasing to the 6 year olds! Ok....whew....end of rant. Sorry 'bout that! I just so rarely see movies I hate for them to suck.

Megatron, Shockwave, Starscream's null Ray, Prime's rifle, and other guns will all be turned into walkie-talkies. The cheap ones too. All they will be able to do is morse code at each other. i like the GI Joe/TransFormers books that took place in WWII. Soundwave as a field telephone was a really cool idea.

Tired. All I can really say right now. Tired, but extremely happy. Brett David Majorwitz was born July 15th, 2005 at Noon (on the dot!) in Lich Germany. He was almost 21 inches long and weighs in at 7 lbs 6 oz. and he wants E. Claire¡¦s digits! ƒº Just kidding Manimal!

He looks just like me (I call him Mini-Me) and has a full head of blonde hair with my matching blue eyes.

We went in about 5:00 a.m. Thursday CET (Central European Time), so I guess it wasn¡¦t too bad. FYI, I did peek down there and luckily I hadn¡¦t eaten anything. It was quite surreal to see the head emerge and then just plopping out. I did get to cut the cord and then man, it was like I had just watched Bloodsport, Terminator 2, and Simon Burch all rolled into one¡Kthe waterworks started coming. Yeah, I¡¦m a man that cries and isn¡¦t afraid to admit it.

Manimal, how do you get Matt to give you a shout out and could you tell me where I could post some pictures so you guys can relish too?

Oh snap, the baby is here, so what can I talk about now on the X-E Blog? I never thought about that before. I¡¦d like to thank the X-E extended family for listening to my various ramblings, my pleas on how to indoctrinate little Brett into the 80¡¦s culture, my hoping he would be a boy, etc. Thanks Matt, Manimal, Kingklash, Trajeal, Muppetbaby, etc, etc. If I didn¡¦t say your name I¡¦m sorry just really tired here.

Thanks again.

Yeah... on the topic of the Transformer movie. The sad thing is that Speilberg's involvement is far from the worst news regarding the film. In fact, we may all someday ruefully wish he had been at the helm. Why you ask? Well, because currently noneother than Michael "Pearl Harbor" Bay is tagged as director. For shame. . .

Hooray! Huzzah! Frabjous Day, Calooh Callay! And a hearty "Woo-hoo!" for Erik! Rest while you can, the adventue is just now getting started. Kinda like playing the first Final Fantasy. You go through all kinds of prep, all kinds of conversation, all kinds of interaction, then after a while, you get the opening credits. As a uncle several times over, not only the kids of my sister, but cousins and friends of the family, I could make a halfway-competent dad. Give my regards to both the kid and the mom. Again, Woo-hoo! Now, for a Extra-Special ChocoDile Dance! and-a one and-a two......

I sleep at least 12 hours a day, usually in stupid time intervals like 4AM-4PM. It's a waste, really.

Combobulations Elizagirth...I mean, Erik. That's super news. I'm sure you can make that kid into a bad habit in no time.

Suggestions:

Fart, and blame it on a poopy baby.

Pretend to be really busy just when the baby needs to be changed.

Blame being late for, well, almost anything, on the baby. (Even though you were just finishing up a game on the PS2.)

The fun goes on and on.

I like to use http://photobucket.com/ for photo hosting. It's really easy to understand and it's simple to make different albums for people to look at (that one's my puppy if anyone wants to see new pics).
Now that it's getting so close to Harry Potter release hour I'm stepping off the internet for the time being. I know I can trust X-E bloggers not to be spoiler jerks, but just to be on the safe side...hope everybody who's looking foward to it enjoys it as much as I know I will. Catch y'all when I'm finished with the book.

Like many others who have already posted, I procrastinate, I worry, and I impulse buy. I only smoke when I drink, but I smoke for keeps whenever I do. One night when I was drunk in a titty-bar, I chain-smoked two packs in three hours. Yuck. Speaking of drinking, I only do that once or twice a month, but I always drink until I pass/black out. I'm not normally prone to excess, but I can't seem to control myself once I get started. Another bad habit of mine is my nasty tendency to fall hard for completely unavailable women and torture myself with the constant anxiety of knowing that I can't be with them. It's utter hell, but I do it more often than you might think. There are many more habits I could share...these mentioned are but tiny pieces of the mosaic that is my fucked-up life.

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 07/15/2005 06:39 PM EST

squee4242: Your puppy ownz

The Yeti: Ah, falling for unavailable women... I've done it before (emotionally unavailable, but that ammounts to the same thing) and it's something I have to guard against.

Last time it happened I contacted a girl I hadn't talked to since high school in a moment of weakness. I just couldn't figure out why I had gotten pissed off and stopped talking to her all those years ago.

Well, after over a year later of several hour nightly phony calls and one very poor decision to visit her... I remembered why.

I haven't talked to her for months. I think I'll be better off if she never calls again.

So, fucked up life? Feel better: you don't have a monopoly, my friend.

What a coincidence; I was reading the IMDB page for Natalie Portman (who I love) and learned that she is a vegan, doesn't drink or smoke, doesn't swear, and has a psychology degree at Harvard. I started getting really down on myself, thinking that I'm not such a good person. Then my personality kicked back in and said, "Yeah? Well I bet she's a really dull person to hang out with!" HA!

Congrats Majorwitz. MadCow, i am still laughing over "fart and blame in on poopy baby"

Chestnuts roasted by Bitchick @ 07/16/2005 07:07 AM EST

Okay, veganism? That's basically to assuage personal guilt over eating animals. Some people can pull it off, some literally can't handle it. Looking at Ms. Portman, I can believe she's a vegan.

Doesn't drink or smoke? Well, that's probably in your best interest, health-wise.

Psychology degree at Harvard?

OH NO, TOM CRUISE HAS A NEW NEMESIS!!!

Otherwise, that's cool.

But "doesn't swear"? Give me a fucking break!

Ugh, if Michael Bay gets to do the TF movie I say we get a collection going to pay someone to injure him so he'll be out of the running. He must be stopped!
