06/20/2005 Entry: "Dunk-A-Balls Cereal!"

Haven't seen Batman Begins yet, but I've read about its "disappointing returns" at the box office, "disappointing" stemming more from the fact that it cost so much to make. Worst part is, what everyone's calling the best parts have nothing to do with huge budgets, and you'd have to think that Nolan could've done a similarly awesome job with even half the budget. It's kind of funny though -- since everyone likes the movie, they're not blaming the lack of blockbuster sales on it. Rather, it's a "decline in the industry overall, AND WHAT GIVES?" I'm not saying it's not true -- there's probably something to it, but you can betcherass that if the movie was critically shit on, it would've been plainly been "the movie's fault." It's kind of like how every reporter said Jackson would be guilty until the verdict came in, when they then claimed they knew it'd come out that way all along while burning all evidence to the contrary on camera as they said it. Of course, I don't have beef with critics or reporters -- I just needed something else for this entry so it wouldn't just be a link to the Dunk-A-Balls article.

"Dunk-A-Balls" cereal arrived in 1993 as a sub-brand of Wheaties, forever changing the landscape of breakfast with basketball-shaped cereal pieces and the means to turn the box into a big disgusting net to hang over your milky bowl. It is the sole entry in Group 007 of The Cereal Prize Project, and it's yours to enjoy for a limited time only. Next up: I don't know and I don't care.

Haven't seen Batman Begins...and I don't plan on wanting to see it. I hated the thought of that movie ever since I saw the Batmobile. I'm not saying the thing isn't cool, it's just NOT the Batmobile which should evidently be in a Batman movie. I keep hearing rave reviews about it too, "it's the best Batman movie ever ooooh". Bullshit, the first was the best, I mean, how can you get better than Jack Nicholson as the Joker...COME ON!!!! Okay, I'm done.

Believe me, keep all the preconceptions you want, and even if you still hate the movie when you're through...you should still at least see it. The "batmobile" (it's not even called that by name in the movie, preserving a bit of realistic-osity) makes sense once you sit through it, and still looks awesome. At the end of Batman begins, the first thought that came to my mind was "that car would be really fun to drive". The thing just looks so maneuverable and fast, a million times better than Burton's batmobile. I know, I had the same thoughts as some of you - it looks like ass. But it also looks like FUN ass.

As well, everything about batman was explained. EVERYTHING. How he got the suit, why he chose the bat as his symbol, how he got the suit made, his motivations. It was doen so much better than Burton's batman. You really got inside Bruce Wayne's head.

But the number one reason why it's better than Burton's? REALISTIC SETS AND SCENERY. This is not a comic book world - this is happening right now, somewhere in the world...batman does exist...and you might actually beleive that when you're finsihed watching the movie. Of course, if you still think Burton's was better...well, you can.Maybe it's that nostalgia thing. Or maybe you just like different aspects of the film. I'm not trying to convince anyone about their opinions, but you should at least see it before passing judgement. Holy crap, this longer than Matt's post.

Oh, one last thing...Katie Holmes sucked.

I ate Dunk-A-Balls. I only remember that they turned the milk a nasty color. Not a fruity color and not a chocolaty color but some ungodly shit color that's undesirable to slurp up after you've finished the cereal.

I didn't cut out the hoop. Would've been different if making a basket deposited the Dunk-A-Ball in someone's mouth but throwing the cereal back into the bowl seemed pointless.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 06/20/2005 10:57 PM EST

And I'm glad I'm not the only one that put off Batman Begins solely because of the batmobile design.

Though Road Block's quote was so funny it may have changed my mind: "it looks like ass. But it also looks like FUN ass"

I don't know if I'll see Batman Begins, it just doesn't interest me for some reason, maybe because I'm constantly disappointed by movies that promise to get deeply into the character's motivations etc. Mr. and Mrs. Smith was fun though.

And just to open an entirely HUGE debate, Spiderman is way cooler than Batman anyway.

I really liked Batman Begins, but the one thing that bugged me is their explaination of the killing of Bruce's parents. I, too, am dissillusioned with the new bat vehicle but other than that it looks like a really good movie so i will most likely see it in the theater. I almost gagged when i flipped on TNT yesterday and Batman Forever was on. I can't believe Tommy Lee Jones agreed to this movie or was even a choice for 2 face. 2 FACE ISN'T WHITE!!!!!!! heh, they shoulda retained Billy Dee Williams from the '89 batman to reprise his role as harvey dent/2 face.
I remember eating Dunk-a-Balls at least a couple of times. I didn't mind the chocolate flavored ones but the "berry" flavored ones tasted like yak scotum in 100 degree weather with 100 % humidity. Never tried to cut out the hoops because it was just a stupid idea in the first place. General Mills should be ashamed of themselves...

...it looks like ass. But it also looks like FUN ass.

That is the best thing I've heard in weeks. Thanks, Road Block. It should be placed in a time capsule so people who open it years from now can collectively go WTF.

I haven't seen it yet, but it looks like Batman Begins has the right "Bat-tone" to it, for lack of a better word. Only in Hollywood is 40-something million dollars disappointing. It's going to recoup, but not until later as it's summer so there's like 5 new movies coming out each week.

Anyway, he seems to actually resembles a bat and the exterior of the Batmobile looks like a bunch of bats put together.

I didn't hate the previous movies, but I felt they tried (especially in the two Schumacher movies) to portray the whole thing with equal campiness and seriousness. That mostly doesn't work out too well. Batman is a rich guy who wears a rubber bat suit and spends his time brooding in a cave. It should be a dark story.

Chestnuts roasted by Dr. Acula @ 06/21/2005 02:15 AM EST

They were called Kool-Aid Koolers I believe. Seemed like every juicemaker in the early 90's had the plastic beer-bottle with a twisty top. Even Lifesavers had juices in those things.

Batman Begins is awesome. The only problem with it is that when you do the two-villain thing, someone gets screwed with less screentime, in this case the Scarecrow. Holmes was serviceable as the hottie. This is the first Batman film in which Batman is the star instead of his villains. Still like the first Batman the best though.

I agree with Matt on the excuses being made by comic fans on BB "disappointment." They're funny and I read comics. 71 million is pretty good for 5 days. That's only about 10 million less then Star Wars 3 made in the same period (I think). That's hardly disappointing.

I can't believe the reasons I'm reading on here on why people are choosing not to see Batman Begins. Batman (2005) getting a tank for a batmobile is so much worse than Batman (1989) killing every bad guy? Something he has had a code against since nearly his entire comic book span? The Katie Holmes thing is a very terrible excuse as well.

I don't remember that cereal.

Chestnuts roasted by Just go see it. @ 06/21/2005 04:30 AM EST

Everyone MUST see the new Batman. I was a really huge fan of the original (Tim Burton), but folks, this one absolutely blows it out of the water. I LOVED this movie SOOO much. Katie Holmes wasn't that bad. Everyone else was FANTASTIC. The new batmobile isn't even supposed to be the batmobile. It's just Batman's first set of wheels. Scarecrow and Ras Al Ghul kicked ass. The overall mood and look of the movie was perfectly dark and gritty, like Batman should've been all along. And the setup for a sequel is soooo beautifully done. But go in thinking of this film as a fresh start to a new series of batman films. There's lots of stuff that contradicts the previous films (all of which took enormous liberties with the character and history). This one finally got it right. Damn near perfect in my opinion. Run, don't walk, to your nearest theater and check it out. Best movie I've seen in a long time, and EASILY the best superhero flick to date.

Chestnuts roasted by Robotmonster1 @ 06/21/2005 05:45 AM EST

I remember that Dunk-A-Balls stuff. It was pretty good, too. My mother bought it and I ate it despite giving barely half-a-shit about basketball in the first place.

Haven't seen the new Batman movie yet... I want to but truthfully the whole Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes crap that's been all over the less important parts of the news is really grating on me.

I probably won't be seeing War of the Worlds... Tom Cruise is a megalomaniacal boob and I'm just ready for him to drop off the face of the Earth, and besides it doesn't look that interesting. I don't like Katie Holmes at all but I'll suffer through her for a new Batman movie.

Oh, and if you don't know anything about Scientology, you might as well read up on it--I'll bet you're going to be hearing a lot more about it in the months to come, Cruise and Holmes being in the spotlight and all. Batman was good. Although I've NO idea why Katie Holmes was in it at all. She was useless, as was her character. Added absolutely nothing to the story, so hopefully the sequels won't include her. Batman doesn't need a love interest. And if he does, she needs to be a LOT more interesting than Katie Holmes.

I’m declaring my allegiance to the “Batman Begins is a great movie” camp. Patrick Bateman and Liam Nielson are fantastic; the story is engaging; Ill grant you that Katie Holms is better suited for a low budget teeny bopper series. I don’t get people fascination with her…she has a crooked face! Its

Movie is definitely worth a watch. As a bonus I will be honest as to my motivation. Usually I steer clear of hate it love it debates, but I’m not only plugging this movie in hopes of sharing a good flick with XE fans, but also because I want lots of ticket sales to ensure a prolific future for the Batman franchise.

The fact that you liked Tim Burton's Batman does not mean that this Batman can't also be cool. If Nolan's came out first and Burton's was coming out now, people would be saying how no one could touch Nolan's version. Stop it. Also - Katie Holmes is horrible, of course, but not enough to ruin the movie. And the Batmobile...makes sense. In other news...Spiderman is the most "emo" superhero?? And that makes him the best??? Ugh.

Batman Begins....wow! I loved it. It did confuse me where KH's character came from. Scarecrow looked gay w/out his mask on...scary as hell with it. The part where Bats dosed Scarecrow w/his own med.s ROCKED!
I like the wheels. They look super fun, I loved it when Gordon was driving it.

No one has said anything about Gordon. I liked him. It related to the Year One bits about him being a clean cop, and not taking bribes. That's why Batman picked him to trust.

The part where Batman called the bats to him so he could get out of the building and back to his car to save KH was great!

Yeah, I liked it! Might go see it again too!

When I saw the preview for BATMAN BEGINS, I was very underwhelmed. I too thought the Batmobile had missed the mark and the it was too Bruce Wayney. However, having actually seen the movie, I would have to say that it is solid. Matt's earlier comments about the best parts being the least expensive is accurate. It explains things and, as someone mentioned earlier, Batman is the star not the villians. BEEFS: The love interest does seemed tacked on (damsel in distress), the climax is pretty weak, Scarecrow is wasted, and it is a little overlong. However, the positives DEFINITELY outway the negatives. Nice, albeit bizarre, nod to zombie movies too.

2. I haven't seen Batman Begins. I was going to (loves Gary Oldman) but I am so annoyed with Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise I am thinking of not seeing it until it is on DVD. Same thing goes for War of the Worlds. Fucking celebrities, saturating my life and ruining the movie.
3. Batman cooler than Spidey. Spiderman never appealed to me like Batman. However Batman is a strange superhero, he has no special powers except that he is rich, works out, and has psychological problems. Kind of like me (except for the rich part ...hahahahaha)

Not that the later parts weren't cool, I just seemed to get more out of the earlier bits. I was also surprised at how the box office totals seemed kind of low. But hopefully word of mouth will spread on this movie. Because otherwise, there won't be another. At least not for a while.

Not seeing batman because of there is a car in that is based on one of the vehicles Batman drives in the comic book that the movie is based on ( http://www.batmobilehistory.com/miller-batmobile.php ) is pretty asinine. Also the Burton Batman movie was rather un-batman in that he changed pretty much the entire mythos of Batman. Not to take away from it, I really liked it. But Batman Begins is most definately a better Batman movie and a better movie in general. Not to say my opinion isn't bias based on the fact I don't really like Tim Burton much as a director and I actually like Batman comic books. Also Ra's Al Ghul isn't a samurai.

The funny thing about the "dissapointing returns" is that they're exactly in line with the other movies.

72 millions in 5 days with a 85-95 projected going into next weekend isn't bad. The movie was never going to do Spider-Man numbers, and anyone that thought it was was lying to themselves.

The movie does rock, however. And if you're avoiding it because of the car...seriously, you need to go outside.

Yeah, I don't get the car-related strife. The "normal" Batmobile doesn't sound like it'd fit this film's motif well at all.

Newest news says Katie Holmes has been dropped from the sequel while everyone else has been signed...supposedly because WB is upset she's taken all the spotlight. I've never seen her in anything I can remember, but I honestly don't want to go see Batman because I don't want to look at her face for one more second, let only pay $10 for the privledge.

The Yeti, that's almost exactly what I told my friends I hoped I saw before we got to the theater, only instead of bruce wayne I wanted batman (wearing nothing but tennis shoes and the mask).

right on (noname)-

Spidy stopped being emo the second he actually got the girl!

At least they didn't try to introduce the Spider-Buggy! I still don't know what they were smokin' when they decided Spidey needed a dune buggy.

Oh, don't think the unintentionally humorous nature of the name Dunk-A-Balls escaped me as a kid. But I mean, look at the screenshots of the cereal pieces: they're TINY BASKETBALLS! And as Matt will tell you, kids have a fascination with miniature stuff. So I couldn't say no.

Plus, if I hadn't eaten it my mom would have refused to get me any more cereal.

kidneyboy: Hey man, each to his own. I wasn't such a fan of the marshmallows but I loved the cinnimon pieces. I started really loving it when the cereal was already out of production and the only boxes I could find were at Big Lots.

I found another cereal later that duplicated the taste but I can't remember what it was. Oh well.

trajeal: No, I haven't ever posted over there but I do make the frequent mistake of trying to have rational conversation through coherent posts and threads over on the (it pains me to admit this) IMDb message boards.

I stick to specific boards when I post and am too afraid to venture into the logic-barren, fanboy-populated wasteland of certain boards... for instance, the Family Guy boards are a fucking nightmare. The X-Files boards are similarly overgrown with useless shit.

Has anyone else noticed this: on the IMDb message boards for any moderately successful show there is ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL a "[insert show name here] is racist!" thread? It really speaks to the ridiculous PC-ness that's been encouraged to flourish in the modern world, and it makes me laugh every time.

You'll also find a lot of "Is [insert name of actor here] gay?" threads. EVEN ON THE WILFORD BRIMLEY PAGE.

And there's the ever-popular "[insert name of actor here] is a misogynist!"

God I hate the internet. But like in any abusive relationship, I keep coming back...

Hi trajeal, squee!
Oh yeah and I totally agree king, if I could swing through the city like Spidey I wouldn't need a dune buggy. Unless I went on a treasure hunting adventure in the desert, but then I'd be in a different movie.

Being a HUGE fan of Tim Burton, I immediately had an automatic feeling in my gut not to like Batman Begins. Burton's view of Gotham was awesome, much like the look in most of his other movies...original, dark, with a hint of cartoonish qualities. As I sat and watched the new flick, I was amazed. The movie explains things better than any of the previous films, and makes you believe that Batman could actually exist, which was my personal favorite concept. The movie is dark, but realistic. It was very entertaining all the way through, and I would highly suggest watchin' this film in the theater. Even if you're not a huge Batman fan, you will most likely enjoy this 'un. Seriously. If you get a chance, try out the PS2 game also. You can glide with his cape and grapple enemies from above. Excellent.

I remember this cereal ... and, having an amazing memory with the ability to recall anything I've seen, smelled, or tasted ever in my life (what the christ ...?), I can safely tell you they were actually pretty tasty.

They kind of tasted like apple jacks if you amp down the flavor, take out the apple part (I still say they DO have a bit of apple taste, all of ye be damned who say otherwise), and kind of ... make the cinnamon feint and stale. That sounds gross, but I thought they were good.

Oh, and as far as Batman Begins ... any positive feelings I had for the Batman franchise were murdered by Batman Returns and Batman Forever ... they were so ... dare I say it? Ghey. I mean ... nipples on thier costumse. Really.

Batman Begins looks like nothing but special effects ... which in a movie like this is a big turnoff for me. In a movie like War of the Worlds, Star Wars Ep III (which I saw today and simultaneously loved and despised by the way), et cetera, reliance on special effects and computer animation is a must. But in a DC/Marvel movie ... let's rely a little more on cinematography, choreography, and set design, and a little less on 3D Studio Max or Maya 5, shall we? And don't get me started on Dreamworks and Pixar ... LAZY ANIMATORS. To top it off, I've seen TWO movies from those two that passed as 2.5 stars: Shrek 1, and Finding Nemo. The rest for maybe half a star.

But I digress gravely, don't I? I used to think Batman was cool for the sheer fact that, like someone earlier in this thread pointed out, he was much more realistic. No super powers. Just a disturbed man in good physical condition with gadgets the most of which could probably be manufactured if you have the greenbacks to pay for them. Sure the VILLAINS are off the wall, but the Penguin and the Riddler could have existed ...

But I'm more interested in seeing what they do with the new Superman movie they want to make, and I can't help but turn an interested eye to Fantastic 4. (I lie, the hottest movie I can't WAIT to see is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, don't let me fool you.)

I think I remember those. Never had them though. (Not into Basketball)
