I'm sure you've all been waiting with baited breath to find out what I thought about Sith. Yeheh. Gotta be honest: I didn't love it, and for the first few minutes after leaving the theater, I wasn't even sure I liked it. Truth be told, I think I was just overly spoiled. I'd read every last aspect about the movie prior to seeing it. Hell, I'd seen stills from every major scene, pretty much frame by frame. The movie had no chance of surprising me, and in many ways, it never had a chance to win me over: Having only seen the stills, I had weeks and months to make up in my own head how the scenes were going to play out. That rarely works in favor of the actual product.
But beyond all that, it's easily the most literally exciting of the prequels. I dug the entire "Order 66" sequence, one of the only parts of the entire prequel trilogy that got a genuine emotional response outta me. Palpatine's various freakouts were also a plus. Bleh. Gimme a few weeks...hopefully I'll come around.
In other news, the reason you didn't get a new article this past weekend is because I was out of town -- so that means you get a, drumroll, trip report this weekend. And how.

Yeah I know I posted this in the previous thread but i think people should check the similarities to the feelings expressed about ROTJ in 1983 and ROTS in 2005. Plus its kinda cool to see a newsgroup that was made in 1983 as well....

Yeah, i saw it last night and i thought it was actually really good compared to the last 2. I was expecting it to kinda suck though, so maybe going in with no expectations was good. I enjoyed vader's torso getting toasted. The part that sucked the most about it was the scene where vader gets built. it was cool until he goes 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO'!, cause it was so horribly done it actually made me laugh out loud.

well, it's the general feeling everywhere I suppose...
It's better than the first two episodes but still not even close to the original trilogy...
Excluding the typical flaws I liked the flick quite a lot.
Went to the theater dressed up as Vader and was as blue as a rotten cheese can be...So I got cool response on many parts. I loved Ewan McGregor's performance and hated the shrieks of Mace Windu when the general feeling is that, in Star Wars, people who get severed body parts tend to accept it without much fuss about it.
well, what can we do...I'll have to watch it millions of times until I have no option but to say that I simply love it...i'm a Star Wars fan, what else can I do!

I gotta say, I liked the movie _much_ more than I thought I would. The fact that Anakin and Padme act much more natural helped immensely. Also, Matt, I agree about the Order 66 sequence, it gave me chills! As did the very end of the movie, the creation of the Vader we all know and love was very well done. Overall, the movie is a tragedy in the classical sense, and I like that in a film. Too many movie cop out for the smarmy, feel-good ending. That is all I have to say!

"and hated the shrieks of Mace Windu when the general feeling is that, in Star Wars, people who get severed body parts tend to accept it without much fuss about it."
Well, when Luke got his hand cut off in ESB, he screamed like a girl IIRC.
And Matt, I hate to say it, but I think you ruined the movie for yourself by not avoiding spoilers. I didn't have a clue what I would be seeing until I actually saw it, and thus had no chance to dream about how things were going to work.

I just talked about this in my journal.
I saw it to appease my husband, who loves Star Wars, and even HE didn't like it.
It was totally flat. Like a two hour lightsaber fight with no emotions in it at all. I hated it.
It felt like George Lucas didn't think about it at ALL...it was rushed and way too sloppily shoved together. It had no substance at all. It was a big cop-out, like they didn't want to take the time to pull you into it emotionally.
Fight. Fight. Fight. Yoda. Fight. Fight. Fight. Really weak lovey dovey scene. Fight. Fight. Go to the Dark Side. Get physically crippled. Fight. Fight. Fight. Get Darth Vader suit. Fight. Fight. End.
I guess at least I attempted to like it. But it was honestly one of the worst things I've seen in a LONG time. Except for Sahara (I only saw it because it was the first feature at the drive-in)...Sahara, now, was unbearably TERRIBLE.
Chestnuts roasted by Devin @ 05/23/2005 09:43 PM EST
I, too, could not help myself from laughing at Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" scream. It just wasn't...vader-like, was it?
Other than that, the best part of the movie was the whole "order 66" thing. Seeing the Jedi being betrayed, and they, seriously, just could not have conceived that anyone could betray them. It was sort of like if Santa Claus put a bomb in your stocking - they didn't see it coming. Well, I though it was emotional, anyway.

I don't think anyone laughed at the "NOOOOO" when I watched it. I don't see what so bad about it. Not Vader like? That's just...

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 05/23/2005 10:15 PM EST
The "NOOOO" wasn't as bad as some of the reports I'd read said.
All Padme/Anakin lines were cackled at by the audience without mercy, though.
Many were confused by Palpatine's transformation, too.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 05/23/2005 10:18 PM EST
As far as Vader's "NOOOOOOO!!!" scream... I thought it was done very well. Keep in mind the only Vader *we* know is from almost 20 years later (from episodes 4, 5, and 6). When Anakin became Vader in ROTS, he was mere hours (or days?) away from being regular whiney Anakin. Why should putting on the whole Darth Vader "costume" make him instantly 100% Darth-like?
I also avoided as much information about the movie before I saw it, and I believe it helped me enjoy it that much more. I had no preconcieved notions of how things should play out, and therefore was able to enjoy it without thinking "That wasn't how I thought the scene should play out", or "They didn't do that in the novelization!" My 2 cents. Expect little, get a lot, be happy. Expect a lot, get little, be ticked.
Episode 1 sucked. Episode 2 began to redeem for the suckiness of Episode 1. Episode 3 was definately the best of the 3.
My number one complaint was that the whole movie looked way too computer generated. Never once did I feel like the characters were actually in a physical "location". They looked like, well... like they were acting in front of a green screen. It just didn't feel real, especially after going home and watching Episode 4. Still loved it though, can't deny it.
Chestnuts roasted by Joshua Wells @ 05/23/2005 10:21 PM EST
I really hated it the first time watching it. Keep in mind it was a midnight showing, surrounded by people with $150 replica lightsabers, months of hype, and I was spoiled silly. After seeing it again though, I think it's grown on me. I dare say it's better than Jedi. Blasphemy!
Chestnuts roasted by billionsknivez @ 05/23/2005 10:36 PM EST
I thought it was fantastic. I really have no complaints, and this statement surprises the hell out of me.
I went to see it yesterday with my girlfriend, a buddy from work, and his fiancee. My girlfriend, from here on known as AMF had never seen any of the Star Wars movies prior to a month ago, when I put her in basic training. We ended up watching "Clones" Saturday night, and the questions she asked me regarding said film reminded me of it's flaws (at the time, I really dug it, but, time has not been kind). Both of us adored Episode III. I was expecting a major letdown, and was at least as spoiled as Matt.
What I found was an exciting film that made me feel like a ten year old again. Certainly, there was some wooden acting, but, for the most part, I wasn't even bothered by this.
What I saw were awesome-looking clones that brought me back to the excitement of seeing the snow troopers of "Empire" and the bikers of "Jedi," what I felt to be a great performance by Hayden Christiansen, and a lot of, well- great movie.
I don't think you're crazy, Matt. But, I hope the movie ends up finding some fondness in your heart.
As a side note- I hit the 7-11 for a Vader Slurpee, and the machine was acting funny, spurting and splurting, and such. I had three sips, threw it away, and left the bodega with a flourish.

Just saw it today, had to say i liked the action sequences, however the romance dialogue between anikin (sp?) and padme was beyond cheesy,
and the wookie thing just seemed tacked on for no real good reason other than needing to have a chewbacca reference
other than that great movie all around
Chestnuts roasted by Gene @ 05/23/2005 10:48 PM EST
I feel precisely the same way. I went in REALLY REALLY wanting to love this movie. But I can't just because everything seemed really forced and rushed. I hope I start to like it with subsequent viewings. I definately left the theatre unhappy.
Chestnuts roasted by Mike @ 05/23/2005 11:00 PM EST
I don't know. I still think the Order 66 was okay. I would rather Anakin take down a few more Jedi than the troopers.
Matt, maybe the spoilers were too much. I went in fresher on this one than I had the other 2 and really liked it. I hope you come around because if you don't, expect a collective "NOOOOOOOO!"

I went completely and totally out of my way to avoid any spoilers. I read nothing and never even watched the trailer. Anytime the tv spot came on I would promptly change the channel. So, when I saw the first night's midnight showing, I went in ready for anything. Subsequently, I really dug the film. I don't understand why people would want to spoil such an epic event.
Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 05/23/2005 11:31 PM EST
A few thoughts on the "NOOOOOO!!"
One reason I liked the film so much was the many parallels between this and Jedi Specifically, the Anakin vs Dooku fight at the beginning (in which Anakin's killing of Dooku contrasts his son's later sparing of his own life.
in ESB, Luke screams out a "NOOOOO" very much like Vader's when Luke finds out Vader is his father.
Maybe it wasn't intentional, but I think Vaders scream nicely parallels that of his son.
Of course, I am a philsophy minor. Maybe I'm thinking too much.

I'm going to bring my little brother to see it on Friday since he couldn't come with me on opening night.
Isn't it odd how kids can look at something and only see the beauty in it? I mean, every kid I've talked to has loved Episode III. It's like every adult SW fan went to see the movie just so they could pick it apart and get themselves a quick ego-boost or something. A real fan would be true through thick and thin.
Chestnuts roasted by Dean @ 05/24/2005 12:54 AM EST
wow you bring up a good point matt. i too spoiled myself with this one. read the script and even saw the stills for about every single scene also. it probably did ruin it for me. although i have been playing out these scenes in my head for over 23 years.
hithchikers guide made me feel more excited before/during/and after, than this did. i think why some of us are so pissed is because we made up our minds that this was supposed to be the end all be all of sci-fi fantasy movies. i hate to say it but the last harry potter movie was more fun than this.
i will say though if i traveled back in time to when i was 8 and made my young self watch the prequel trilogy i think my young head would explode from excitement. i guess thats all that matters. when i was playing with star wars toys i never followed the story lines. and my dialog for the characters was way worse than what Lucas could ever write. actually maybe not. i take that back.

I dunno, it sounds like people are trying to convince themselves that its a good movie. I mean, it's all about meeting YOUR expectations. If it did it for you, then great! If you found it disappointing, that's ok too. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece just because the "Star Wars" name is slapped on it. But then again, I freely admit that Star Wars isn't my religion, so what do I know? Lucas will probably update the CGI and add new scenes when the "prequel trilogy" goes to Blu-Ray or whatever the next video format is anyhow.
In any event, I think the real test for this movie will be watching it again in a couple of years when the hype isn't so fresh in everyone's minds. I remember when Attack of the Clones came out it garnered a LOT of praise...some people were actually saying that it surpassed Empire Strikes Back. Nowadays the majority of the opinion seems to be more in the negative.
So let the "last Star Wars movie" hype die down a bit, and let the movie stand on its own merits to properly judge it.

Matt im right there with you.......I saw every spoiler...every single video i could download yadda yadda yadda...but I actually loved it. After seeing it 4 times now i think i can pass a true and honest oppinion of it. The beginning was good..allthough it suffered from too many bad jokes, a little too much R2...and ANNOYING BATTLE DROIDS!!!!,but man when Mace and the posse barged in on Palpy.....GODDAMN i got goosebumps!
Portman upset me, bad acting on her behalf, Hayden did a great job this time around with the acting, and Ewan Mcgregor at the end of the film actually made me tear up a little..(" it was said you were to destroy the Sith.. not join them, you were my brother...i loved you!!!!!) Ewan nailed the emmotion perfectly...chilling just chilling.
This to me was The Star Wars that was most like Star Wars. I LOVED The Phantom Menace. I thought it was the perfect setup movie...in my eyes it was as slow as A New Hope can be from time to time. To me Attack of the Clones is the film that is not Star Wars at all. I think its kinda the bastard child of Star Wars. Bad acting, bad CGI, horribly forced love story so on. I did however love Count Dooku and thought he is one of the Sagas better villians(even better than Maul or Jango!) Well that was my opinion sorry if it was long and drawn out....im just a huge fan of the Saga....had to jump at a chance to play the role of Roger Ebert.
Chestnuts roasted by Ralph @ 05/24/2005 07:44 AM EST
You know, sometimes I wish I had the innocence of my youth back. I think the problem with the movie is that, well, it's not really made for adults. If you think about it, the majority of people who have seen the originals are in their late 20's early 30's and older. They were kids when they saw it. I saw it a third time with my 2 younger cousins (8 and 10) and they absolutely loved the hell out of this movie. IT was the 10 year olds birthday so there were about 5 other kids with us and I wlll tell you, some of them had their jaws on the floor when watching this movie. If you think about it, if you were their age, you'd probably wouldn't give a shit about the acting, and even if you did, your not cynical enough or so uptight where it would ruin the movie for you. Hell, even the OT isn't exactly Oscar winning caliber as far as performances go. Since so many of us have the nostalga for it though, I doubt anyone would admit, that in reality, they were kid of campy and cheesy as hell too.
My point is, all these critics, all these fans are now much older, and it takes alot more to wow them and hit them emotionally. Considering we live in a world where tearing things apart is so much easier and fun, apparently, some people just forget to try to be a child again and LET themselves enjoy it. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about?
I'll give you a perfect example. The G1 series (Transformers) in retrospect was one shoddy, poorly animated cartoon series. A 23 minute toy commercial, completely devoid of any structure. As a kid, I, and most other people didn't care. As an adult, I will defend it to no end because it's part of my childhood. HEll, even the movie was God-aweful at times. I will however not readily admit it. Nowadays, the newer versions (Armada, Energon and soon Cyberton) get ripped on because they were not as good as G1. Hell, they animated waaaayyy better and actually have some sort of story. But these grown men are so blinded by nostalgia and loyalty to the original, they can't see it. I think the same goes for Star War and the prequels...
Or maybe I'm just crazy....perhaps that lava bath I took for a few cycles has something to do with it.....

Palpatine has outplayed and out manuevered every schmuck in these films. From the Senate to the Jedis to the Trade Federation and even Yoda. Doesn't he kinda deserve to be the supreme ruler in that case?
He didnt inherit, buy or stumble into his power. he worked for it, step by step, stone by stone and I end up really respecting his character more than any other when the credits roll.

I've been saying this on about every message board I've come across that where someone frowns at Grievous' coughing spats, so I may as well say it again.
General Grievous had both organic eyes, a heart, and lungs. He was very obviously a cyborg, not an android. It's really not that ridiculous for him to be coughing. Especially since I've heard that Mace Windu crushed his chest in the second season of the Clone Wars cartoon(Sadly I haven't seen it, as I haven't had cable for over a year).
On the one hand, Star Wars has never really addressed the concept of cyborgs, so I guess it makes sense for people to frown at Grievous and wonder what the hell he's supposed to be. Even Vader is never really refered to as a cyborg in any of the films.

I think what Lucas should've done was not done Phantom Menace at all started at Attack of the Clones, made Revenge of the Sith the second movie, and then made another movie to bridge the gap better. Really there was nothing important that happened in Phantom Menace that couldn't have been summed up in the opening crawl for Attack of the Clones. The reason I bring this up is honestly the part of the movie (ROTS) that killed me was everything after Obi Wan mauls Anakin. The editing started making my head spin and the pace of which everything was happening was a little too relentless. NOw I understand that they have time contstraints and yadda yadda but most people knew what happened anyways which leads to my point. If another movie was to be made these events could have been presented at a much better pace plus you'd get a peek into Vader's training as a sith and other events that transpire in between ROTS and ANH. Is this actually what this supposed Star Wars TV show is going to present to us???? Or is it going to be a bunch of expanded universe crap???

I agree with what someone said earlier: If you were going to root for anyone in this trilogy, it was Palpatine. He did everything perfectly and was just an all-around cool character. For an actor I only otherwise know for a throwaway role in Sleepy Hollow, it's amazing how much I'd like to buy Ian a drink and beg him to make gnarly noises.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 05/24/2005 02:37 PM EST
After seeing this movie, I keep thinking one thing...why didn't they just keep Darth Maul until this movie? He was pretty much the only character people liked in TPM, and even then he barely had any screen time. Then Dooku was only in the last 30 minutes of AOTC, and then gets killed in the first 5 minutes of ROTS. It would have had such a greater impact when Anakin finally kills him in this one if Maul had already beaten Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, then Obi-Wan and Anakin. Now, Anakin just easily kills this guy that is too old to begin with. Plus, you have 3 movies, 3 apprentices. Makes them seem weak or something. You could have just had Maul escape somehow in TPM to fight another day.
Chestnuts roasted by Y2JB78 @ 05/24/2005 02:50 PM EST
I agree with Matt. Palps was so close to his goal. And along with that Ian McDiarmid was the star of ROTS by far. There are some insane fanboys saying that he deserves an oscar for his role. Now I agree he did a good job but not a job the academy would blink an eye at because its probably not "sophisticated" enough or they'd make any excuse in the book probably...I have a quick question (and i really don't expect anyone to know this off hand) but what does Sidious scream right before he chucks Mace out the window. I've seen it plenty of times i still don't understand what he says....

Well, I didn't read all of the comments from the last 2 blogs, but as a lifelong SW fan (since I was 5 years old) who was kind of disappointed with Phantom (although I didn't hate it) and fairly satisfied with AOTC, I have to say that I absolutely loved Sith. I had all kinds of emotional response from this movie. I thought there were a lot of subtleties (like Yoda's Dagobah theme playing before he went to face the emporer, or the younger sounding Vader voice after the implants were added) and that this was just a plain all out exciting film with lots of great action and good story. Sure there were flaws, but all SW movies have some type of flaw. And I have to say, it made me like AOTC and even TPM better. This movie finally has me as excited about Star Wars as I was as a kid.

But damn. When did Padme become a sissy girl? I know, she was pregnant and hormonal. And Ep. III is supposed to be very tragic. But all Padme did throughout the movie was cry and cry and cry like a bitch. Her only redeeming moment was flying out to confront Anakin right before the fight with Obi-Wan, and even then she sobbed her way through it.
This is the same girl who refused to be left behind in Ep. I, and fought beside the big boys. This is the same girl who kicked ass up, down and sideways in Ep. II.
It is just too much for me to believe that she could become a total pansy just because she got married. And it is also too much for me to believe that she would just give up the will to live. That wasn't poetic or romantic, that was just stupid.
But again. I had fun watching Ep. III and will see it again.

I'm sorry, but if someone didn't absolutely love Sith, you need to allow for the possibility that maybe it's just not as wonderful as you think it is.

This film for many fans is definitely creates a love/hate relationship. I just wished they had done more tempting of Anakin in AOTC towards the Dark side, so his transition into Vader would had of taken place sooner in ROTS, less Hayden is a good thing.
Was it me or did it seem that Lucas tried to wrap up a good 45min to 1hr of footage towards the end into about 20 min. It's like he pulled it all out of his ass, like Padme and the naming of the kids, yoda a& Obi-Wan splitting town and the separation of the twins...
All in all a semi good film.... I did enjoy all the scene's with the vintage props and stages...

in return of the jedi, princess leia says she was very young when her mother died, but she remembered she was beautiful, and always sad.
In sith, the mother dies when they are born.
That annoyed the living hell out of me, cause it shows they just dont give a shit anymore.
Beyond that, the dialogue annoyed me, more stupid fake ass love scenes, except the one where padme (who can't act anyways) confronts darth vadar, that was an emotional part and she actually pulled it off for once.
However, I found the movie pleasing, there was enough good parts to outweigh the annoying ones.

Like seconds after you lose, you say well, gave it a good run, now I go to hide like a lil beatch. I understand having to hide and all, with the sith in full power now, and loads of jedi destroyed, but come on, give it atleast a day or two to think about lol.

the80s, the adopted mom/real mom Princess Leia thing was discussed in the last blog entry. It's not a plot hole or continuity problem.
As far as Yoda going into exile, all I can offer is the fact that the entire Republic was behind Palpatine and believed the Jedi were dangerous traitors. The only people Jedi would be safe with were the beginnings of the rebellion (Organa, Mon Mothma).
And speaking of Mon Mothma, wtf? I can understand and support the cutting of Bai Ling, but why couldn't Mon Mothma be spared? Or was it a blinkandImissedit?
Matt not being enamored with ROS sort of reminds me of how X-E got us all exhilarated for Xmas, but then when it actually rolled around the man himself wasn't all that thrilled.
Call me a sap, but I swear I was rooting for Anakin to stay away from the dark side...and yes, I'm fully aware how silly that is...I couldn't ever root for Palp, but I gotta give him props for pulling wool over the eyes of all these Jedi masters who couldn't spot the dark master right under their noses. So big ups to Notorious E.M.P. for the machevellian machinations.

RotS was for me, in many ways, a letdown. I avoided as many spoilers as I could since there wasn't much that you couldn't infer that would happen in the movie anyway.
Overall, I enjoyed the film, but there are a lot of things I dislike about it. In random, bullet-point fashion:
*The writing was good in places and horrific in others. I don't know if this makes any sense, but if I were telling someone all about the movie, in as much details as I could, I can imagine that person saying:
"Wait, don't give me a synopsis of the dialouge, tell me exactly what was said."
"Those were the exact lines."
"..."
*I don't care what anyone says, the acting quality in the prequels is generally lower than the original trilogy. You can make the argument that it's suppossed to be less than serious because SW was inspired by the serials Lucas watched as a kid, but there's a difference between "light-hearted" and "crap".
Hayden Christensen was better in RotS than he was in AotC, but I think that's mainly because he had less talking to do in this one (and less of those AWFUL scenes with Padme). All teh guy brought to teh part was a pretty face and the ability to look badass while angry.
Poor Natalie Portman. She was better here than in AotC also, but she wasn't very good. There's just something about the Star Wars movies in particular that cripples her acting ability when she walks onto the set. At least she's pretty, she has that.
For me, Ewan McGregor stood as one of the highlights of the film, acting-wise. Ian McDiarmid did an excellent job with only a few awkward moments that didn't really bother me. I wouldn't have liked to see the prequels without him. And Frank Oz was great, as usual.
Samuel L. Jackson was fine. Except for that whole thing about Jackson not wanting Windu to die like a bitch. Sorry Sam, you're such a badass it's had for you to play the victim.
Thank God for Anthony Daniels. Can you imagine watching Star Wars with someone else doing C-3PO's voice?
*General Grevious, a Russian? And he lasts all of 20 seconds before he gets his hands lopped off? Lucas, you jackass, did you even watch The Clone Wars?
GL: "Yes I did, and I enjoyed it so much I took the series away from Genndy for the upcoming third season. CG is better than animation, everyone knows that."
Yeah, that's why everything BUT the special effects get talked about in Star Wars reviews, right George?
GL: "Have you tried Darth Dew yet?"
* Did anyone catch the last name of the man entrusted with 3PO and R2 at the end of the movie?
I know Dennis Lawson has issues with the SW series, but he couldn't play that last part? It was offered to him.
Maybe it was supposed to be Wedge's father, or uncle, or something.
* What the heck is this Mon Motha scene that everyone is talking about?
* Anakin's fall to the Dark Side was not very convincing. Why not give us a little more of the friendship/brotherhood between Obi-Wan and Anakin so you don't have to TELL us, "I loved you like a brother!"
Nope, instead we get MORE ANAKIN/PADME SCENES!
* I appreciate Lucas's not shying away from the graphic stuff in this film. It must have been hard for him, judging by the inane changes he's made to the original trilogy.
*The "NOOOOOO" scene could have been better. Why do a generic scream when it could have been a choked, sobbing scream? Convey a little emotion, PLEASE.
I didn't laugh at it though. Everyone in the theater laughed when Yoda went to see Palpatine and knocked back those two guards, though
*Was the Millenium Falcon just a cool cameo, like the X-Wing and the Tie Fighters in Episode 2? I didn't catch it myself.
That's all the random raving I can come up with now. Maybe later I'll post more of my opinions that nobody asked for

I really enjoyed ROTS. I had almost no spoilers going in, so that was good.
The last scenes with Anakin and Obi Wan literally brought a few tears to my eyes. The characters were such a part of my reality growing up, to see them in those last few scenes together was a very emotional experience for me. I thought Ewan McGregor was incredible, and the delivery of his last lines to Anakin was very powerful.
I think the only real bad acting in the movie was Natalie Portman. She was awful IMO. Everyone else did a great job, especially considering how bad the acting was in the first two, and considering they did it all in front of blue screens. Natalie was just bad though. And I think her bad acting rubbed off on Hayden. He did a much better job overall than I anticipated...I was genuinely surprised, and happy with his performance.
Overall, I loved it. It had a few problems which are not really worth griping about. But it was so relieving to have a movie experience that I was genuinely satisfied with, after waiting more than 20 years for one. I've seen it twice so far, and plan to go at least a couple more times.

Which logical leap is that Jen? There are two valid explanations I've seen for what I think you're complaining about (the Leia mother memory), and neither one seems illogical or inconsistant...please explain. I haven't really been convinced either way by either of them but I also don't see why either explanation is flawed. If you see the inconsistancy please point it out because I'm honestly trying to figure out why so many people are seeing it as a problem.
Word up John. ~Pretty fucking awesome~ is a good description I'd agree with. There's a fair chance it's not ~deep~ or ~important~ but ~fucking awesome~ it was. I don't like when people just dismiss "fans" in general, like you're either jaded and coolly indifferent or have absolutely no perspective. I think enthusiasm is more fun and as infectious as the grumpiness. Just saw it today. It was pretty good! MUCH better than the previous two. The only things I didn't like were the beginning--thought it dragged on a bit, some of the dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin during the battle was wooden...Hayden tried to sound evil but failed, and finally Anakin's "I HATE YOU!" line...he sounded more like a five year old having a tantrum. Grevious wasn't too bad, and the fight between Mace and Palpatine was MUCH better than I expected. I actually chuckled at the "NOOO!" scene, since I was expecting it to be lame anyway.

Woah, woah, woah. Nobody expected Padme to be "fine" with the events of Ep. III. She, however, wasn't "fine" with the attempts on her life in Ep. II - and her character still managed to do more than sob throughout the entire film. Hell, she managed not to cry when she was dragged off to certain death fighting the beasts. She also wasn't "fine" with the threats to her kingdom in Ep. I, but again, she managed to do something other than cry about it.
Your handle indicates that you're a big Portman fan, so you're obviously going to take it seriously if anyone disses on her. But FYI, I don't blame the actress. Padme's scenes were, in general, very poorly written in Ep. III and inconsistient with her prior behavior. This was no fault of Portman's - she did what she could with the part, and I wouldn't want to see her replaced with anyone else. She is a compelling, immensely watchable star.
This doesn't, again, excuse the poor writing behind the Padme scenes, though. The things you mention that made Padme so upset happened in the last 20 minutes of the film - but Padme spent the ENTIRE duration of the movie in tears. We, the viewers, all knew that the war would get bloodier, the Republic would turn into the Empire, and Anakin would become Darth Vader. Padme did not know these things until the end. Obviously, the character is perceptive and saw that bad things were happening. But the same could be said of Obi-Wan, Yoda, Windu, etc., etc., and they managed not to spend the entire film in tears.
I liked the kick-ass Padme of Eps. I and II. The presence of strong, uncontrived female characters is one of the charms of Star Wars. I did not like seeing her devolve into a sissy.

I thought that one of the best lines ever was when Obi Wan looks down at Anakin in disgust and says..."You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!" I laughed really hard at that, and I was the only one. The tone that he said it in (almost like, "way to go, dumbass"
combined with the irony (like a kid on a soccer team making a goal for the other team) was simply too much hilarity for me.

I loved the movie, but I could've done without some of the obvious winks to the fans. For example, there was no reason for Chewbacca to be in the movie. And if Lucas went through the trouble of casting a Peter Cushing lookalike to play a young Tarkin, he could've at least given him a couple of lines.
Despite little things like that though, I was pumped after leaving that theater, and I can't remember the last movie that did that to me

What has become the most annoying thing to me is people trashing others for having opposing viewpoints. I won't mention any names from within these forums.
I personally (as mentioned in previous posts) wasn't overly thrilled with the movie, but I DID enjoy it. I DO plan on seeing it again. I DO really really (really) WANT to like this movie, but don't... yet.
I think it's awesome that there are so many people that LOVE this movie, and think it's (one of) the best movie they've seen. But I also think it's awesome that there are others that aren't willing to just swallow whatever Lucas puts out there, without giving it a scrutinous look-over.
I thought someone else had already mentioned it in this forum, but if not, I'll say it...
I truly think that you can take whatever you want from this movie.
*You can take it as face value, and just accept that it's a good sci-fi flick with cool special effects.
*You can look FOR plot/continuity inconsistencies...and find them.
*You can use your vast knowledge of the OT and expanded universe to argue for/against anything others point out.
The coolest part is that the SW Universe was ever created, and has inspired so many people to become interested and lost in the epic tales. It's affected all of our lives, and for some of us, our children's lives.
So no matter what your opinions are of this final flick, (I'd think) you have to at least give a nod to the sheer persistence of the influence of the SW Universe.

I'm all for the "mystique" of the SW universe and the unmistakable mark it has left on pop-culture as well as individuals on a very personal level. But that's what makes the prequels so damned frustrating. The epic granduer and irrefutable charm of the original films has been utterly bastardized into the lackluster installments that have been released over the last few years. It's enough to make me want to cry. It really seems at times that Lucas is intentionally trying to stamp out all the magic that episodes 4-6 possessed by prefacing them with such asinine stories containing watered-down versions of the characters I love so dearly.
What I say now, I say with a heavy heart: the prequels should have never been made. They're fine movies, sure. But they serve no purpose in supporting the storylines of the vastly superior originals. If Lucas had such a hard-on to make the overblown spectacles that he has recently created, he should have done so with new characters, locales, etc. instead of mucking around with the SW lore.

I know Christensen is such an easy target but one should really see 'Life as a House' before lampooning him as the problem. Fact is there were several A list actors in EP1, 2 & 3 and the only memorable performances came from CGI characters. That says, no shouts, the director is the problem.

Finally! Saw it last night at a midnight showing- first showing in Korea. LOVED IT overall....some problems, of course- the "Noooo" was awful, the love stuff cheesy, too much R2 at the beginning, not enough 3PO, Chewie was of no importance, they wrapped up 30000 loose ends in the last 20 minutes, and Padme (natalie portman) was awful, with a horrible expanation for her death- jeez, they couldn't think of anything else???
There- now that all of that is off my chest, I must say that this movie was still pretty great. Hayden did a much better job this time around, and Ewan was great as well. Hats off to Ian McD- he was excellent. Also, I got goosebumps a number of times- with the whole Anakin switching over scene "You shall be known as Darth Vader" and of course with the Obi Wan/ Vader fight at the end. I am glad it was so graphic- finally added some 'grown upness' to the cartoon messes Lucas has made with all the damn CGI thrown into these prequels.
It was just so great to see all the questions answered, ya know? Even though you knew most of the answers anyway, it was nice to see them happen on the big screen. I feel like everything has come full circle, and they filled in the gaps well (as well as they could with all the holes they dug for themselves in the original trilogy, anyways! ex: Obi Wan: "That boy is our last hope" Yoda: "no there is another" or obi wan/ vader never recognizing the droids later on....etc.)

anakin is no more of a little bitch than luke skywalker was. the acting is "bad" because the jedi are all a bunch of stiffs. theres no han solo type in these movies and everyone acts more uptight than the cast of law and order. true star wars fans look past this. star wars is way bigger than the acting in a movie. this aint the academy awards.

Maybe is was some of Admiral Akbar's peeps who waited too long in line.

You know, I just now saw this film last night, and I think that, despite all our debates as to whether it was a great movie or a wretched one, we can all agree that something magical happened in that theater: Hayden Christensen got most of his limbs lopped off and then HE CAUGHT ON FIRE. And nobody can ever take that away from us.

Still have yet to see the movie...
God this sucks.
Perhaps I should just fly to Korea to see it and crash at Muppet Baby's pad. Not sure how Mrs. M would take it though, you know, being pregnant and all.

What tickles me is that when you say you like the prequels, someone makes the claim that we're accepting Lucas's table scraps, or anything similar. Well, no, no we're not. I'm a huge Evil Dead fan, does that mean I take Sam Raimi's tablescraps? I mean, it's HARDLY a perfect film either, but hell.
And yes, the Prequels should've been made. As they are, they need work, but that doesn't make them any less Star Wars than the other three, no matter how you feel on the situation. Just repeat to yourself "But I wanna go to Toshi Station to pick up some power converters!!" over and over in your head and you'll realize, each trilogy has plenty of flaws. And they're both damn enjoyable in their own rights.

Karma, I don't think loving the movie and scrutinizing the movie are exclusive...otherwise I say "word" to your post. You're quite the diplomat (and assuredly a better one than Senator Binks). A big LOL also to jeremiah, jhnnywalkr and John.
Yeti, I disagree that the prequels don't serve the storylines of the OT. Maybe I'm the only person who thought it was totally awesome to find out that Palps snagged Anakin with the exact same trick that he almost got Luke with, maybe I'm the only person who was interested to see the workings of the dying Old Republic, maybe I'm the only person who was thrilled to see Obi Wan's effort and eventual failure as Anakin's teacher....I definitely doubt I am the only one, but even if I was I'd say making one moviegoer have a really great time seeing three movies (even if later viewings proved less impressive) (even if some of the other moviegoers don't have quite as good a time), giving one moviegoer a good popcorn experience is plenty of reason to make a movie. In other words, just because George Lucas might have to regret not making every single person who saw his movies happy doesn't mean he has to regret making them at all.

Until Lucas falls in the richest bastards list, I doubt we will see anymore Star Wars Episodes.
We know Hollywood has run out of ideas other than remakes, prequels, or sequels.
Does anyone want prequels or sequels, or remakes to any other movies?
Like say Police Academy? Friday the 13th? Nightmare on Elm Street? Major League? E.T.? Home Alone?

squee, I agree that the two (love and scrutinize) are not mutually exclusive. I appreciate the nod to my diplomatic skillz (though i'm trying to figure out just how big of a feat it is to out-do Binks). =)

I have seen this movie 3 times now and I have to admit the first time I saw it I was stuck on the dialogue more then anything. The 2nd time I saw it it actually doesn't clunk as much. The 3rd time I was just absorbing all of the events happening in the back ground. It's funny but reading the book based on the screen play really fills in a lot of the holes that make ROTS plot kind of iffy. I can understand why he had to cut them but still.. I think that hands down the best performance is from R2 !!
Chestnuts roasted by Canadaka @ 05/27/2005 10:34 AM EST
Sister-in-law tells me R2 kicks much ass and has a great comedic moment. (R2 will be along any moment and he'll turn off the force field) So, that's something else to look forward to. And Hayden catching on fire? It ranks up there with watching Leo sink to the bottom of the sea in Titanic.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, Padme is dead, Anakin's burnt, and Yoda's in self-imposed ex-ile. Laughing and dancing, in the frosty air. What a fine time, its the right time... to get rid of the XMAS that time forgot... A jingle bell time... Merry Christmas everyone! May the force be with you! This is getting as bad as the Star Wars Holiday Special.

I think it's cool when people on the internet write out dialogue they think is funny. It's even better when they do it one line. I always imagine the nerdiest voice I can reading those things aloud. Awesome.
Oh, anyways, I think the new Star Wars movie is the best of the prequel trilogy but that's just king of shit mountain. I thought a lot of it was pretty funny, though.

"SuperShadow is a lying sack of shit. - DarkPrimus"
Entirely true.
Supershadow.com is a big lie. Read the following link at Wikipedia if you need proof. There are many, many people who are pissed at this guy for posing as George Lucas and for lying about being involved in the production of the Prequels. (not to mention the girls he claims are his girlfriends but aren't)
His site was hacked by a group called the g00ns (http://www.g00ns.com) for these reasons and more.
DO NOT take anything he says seriously unless you see it on Starwars.com or theforce.net. Even George Lucas himself is aware of this fake.

Chestnuts roasted by Cyanyde @ 05/28/2005 01:00 PM EST
I just checked out that website. What a load of garbage. There is no way that guy could honestly believe he was the least bit connected with Lucas. Laughable and entirely self-delusional.
P.S. one can also tell that it is fake because Lucas rarely concerns himself with thanking the fans, etc.
Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/28/2005 02:39 PM EST
George Lucas also would never call one of his fans "geeks" or "nerds" (even though we already know it to be true) ;p

This is off the subject of "sith" but i figured someone here might know. Does anyone remember a live action kids show from the 80's where they would get smashed with jelly doughnuts? It was somewhat like "you can't do that on television". I have been going nuts trying to remember the name of it.
Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 05/28/2005 03:17 PM EST
I've been going on the Supershadow site for about a year now...got there with a Yahoo seach for the Sith script and spoilers. The guy is very dilusional. He talks about hanging out with Lucas, helping with editing, stuff like that. It's almost laughable how out of touch with reality the guy is. That's half the fun of the site.
Chestnuts roasted by Y2JB78 @ 05/28/2005 04:13 PM EST
Well, I'm afraid his site won't be around much longer.. I can pretty much promise you that.
Chestnuts roasted by Cyanyde @ 05/28/2005 06:04 PM EST
kb- Yes, it was called "You can't do that on television". I used to watch it when I was a kid-What in the heck has happend to all the good tv shows?? Ha ha.
I liked the movie very much, but let's face it y'all, they don't make them like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, do they??
My son has ADHD- he sat through the whole thing without blinking an eye, and that was magic enough for me!! That's what it's all about, imo. It made me remember what it was like for me when I saw Empire in the theatres.
The only gripe I have is, Mace Windu's death sucked. I like Samuel Jackson, but geeeeeesh!! lame.
Other than that, let's all remember, it's just a movie. And, yes, I am a die hard SW fan, but it's already been made, and there is nothing any of us can do about the way it turned out. I knew it wouldn't be the same as the old ones when I saw menace. Ugh.
Oh, and for those of you talking about Padme being weepy in ep 111,
Remember, pregnancy can make ANY strong woman fragile, especially if you are expecting twins. I wasn't exactly expecting her to go confront Anakin and whip out a lightsaber.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! Let's not forget those who fought for us.
Chestnuts roasted by TW @ 05/28/2005 10:40 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 05/29/2005 02:06 PM EST
