05/07/2005 Entry: "Star Wars "Lava Berry Explosion" Pop Tarts!"

Currently working on an article, but just remembered that I wanted to show the world the new Star Wars Pop Tarts -- "Lava Berry Explosion," in tribute to the setting of Anakin and Obi-Wan's fateful duel. It's one of the better Sith-related food promotions I've seen, as it actually affects the grub itself instead of just throwing a character on the box. Not to say that they haven't, because Vader's right there, but take a look at the Pop Tarts themselves -- red to all Hell, with even redder jelly filling and a bunch of yellowish sprinkle things for a slight atmospheric effect. Something like that. I'm not very fond of Pop Tarts to begin with and thus a terrible judge, but personally, they taste way too much like candy to me. Even the pastry crust is a sonic cavity inducer.

Speaking of ROTS, I've read a lot of reviews and most seem pretty positive, but my old pal Rob from Retrocrush hated it. And it's not so much the subjective-based points of his review that concern me -- it's just the simple facts about the movie. I wouldn't read it if you're avoiding spoilers, but again, judging by this, it looks like we may have another case where it'll be tough to overlook the oversights (hey!) and just enjoy it for what it is -- which I will try to do with every last ounce of Force power in my loins.

First post???
I bought some of these the other day. They are SITH-riffic!

Second post?

I don't really think that what he has said will stop me from watching the movie...

...although, I really had to agree with some of what he said.

When it comes to pop-tarts, I stick to the non-fruit flavors. (Smores Rule). I save the fruit flavors for Toaster Strudels. Those are delicious.

Ugh, I hate PopTarts. I can't stand eating such sugary crap for breakfast.

So, Matt, I hear John Rocker is pitching for the Long Island Ducks this year. He doesn't seem to have relaxed any in the past few years. His mother must be so proud of him.

Anyone else catch that Diet Vanilla Cherry Dr Pepper commercial w/ the guy singing the "Menah-menah" Sesame Street song? Go here, click on Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper, and then go to Media Gallery. The first tv commercial is the one. Ten bucks says you'll have that song stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Has anybody ever eaten brown sugar Pop Tarts with butter? You feel disgusting afterwards, but it's so delicious.
I'm dying to read the Kevin Smith and RB reviews, but I'm trying to avoid as many spoilers as is possible for now. What do you guys think of the live-action TV series they talked about this week?
Traj: There was a link on goldenfiddle to the actual video from the Muppets of the menah-menah song, but I couldn't find it again. (Also, did you hear the news on Carnivale?)

No offense to Robert, but he's a spiteful idiot. Sure, the prequels aren't as great as the originals, but what else is nowadays? People like him make me sick, always bashing the prequels becuase it's the cool thing to do.

If you knew anything about George Lucas, you'd know he doesn't care about the merchandising aspect of Star Wars. To him,it's a means to an end,to finance his companies and allow him to remain independant of the Hollywood system. So I don't buy that "movie-length toy commercial" buisness for a minute.

From what I've read and seen,Revenge of the Sith is going to be great.

Chestnuts roasted by Overlord @ 05/07/2005 07:15 PM EST

For what it is worth, you can watch that video on Stupidvideos.com. Just do a search for manah manah. You can also see a clip of Leonard Nimoy signing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. It even has 60's go-go dancers. It is quite possibly the most surreal video I have ever seen.

Chestnuts roasted by Ed @ 05/07/2005 07:22 PM EST

Oop, sorry 'bout that. Don't know how I mixed that up, listening to "Classic Rock" (who are the ad wizards that thought that up?) as much as I do. Won't happen again. Damn bacon-filled cakes.

Don't be so hard on yourself, man. Mistakes happen to the best of us. Like me writing "thEse" instead of "thOse" on the first post of this thread. D'OH!
ROTS: bad, great, whatever. It will still be the last movie so it doesn't matter. I don't think the live action spinoff sounds like a good idea. It is sad (?) that the CLONE WARS cartoon is arguably some of the better STAR WARS material.

P.S. I got a Clone Trooper figure and a Vader pen.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/07/2005 07:56 PM EST

I'm with Matt and trajeal - I hate Pop Tarts. I only eat them when I'm at my parents' house and REALLY desperate, and I don't buy them for myself. That's just more sugar than any person should overwhelm their system with at one time.

Am I going to see "Revenge of the Sith?" Hell yes. No, the other two prequals weren't classics, but this one looks like it'll at least be a bit more action-packed. Anything that keeps George Lucas focused on what he does best (derring-do action) and away from what he doesn't do well at all (ahem, romance) is fine by me.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 05/07/2005 08:05 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 05/07/2005 08:56 PM EST

I used to love pop-tarts, but then I went to College.

See, I hated eating in the stupid cafeteria for breakfast. We weren't allowed to have anything that would let you cook anything in the dorm room, so it was either cereal, donuts, poptarts, or nothing. Cereal was too involved (bowls, utensils, etc). Donuts got stale quickly. Nothing left me hungry until lunch (sometimes as late as three). So pop-tarts it was.

I got SICK of the damn things, to the point where eating one literally made me sick.

I've only had pop-tarts once or twice since.

So I think I'll pass...

On another note: does anyone else thing that the Darth Vader helmet doesn't look the same anymore? I know they re-designed it so it would be symmetrical, but that picture from the pop-tart box looks like it's of an old Kenner figure...

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 05/07/2005 10:44 PM EST

Did they put that cereal back out yet? I'm almost more excited for that than I am for the movie! I found a box a little over a year ago in a friend's pantry and quickly ate the entire thing, savoring every stale-as-fuck marshmallow I could.

Delicious... simply delicious.

Those diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper bitches! They stole the beauty! And to think I like their (original, none of those six different nasty flavors crap) product.

I don't buy this "George Lucas acts outside of Hollywood's system" stuff either. These films are just as formulaic as the next blockbuster. Having said that, calm down people, it's just a movie, watch it for the entertainment, not for the silly details like plot or lack thereof.

You spelled independent wrong.

JLAJRC, you got it. It's only been announced in the Carnivale Yahoo group so far, HBO hasn't made an official announcement yet. Here's an Ain't It Cool post about it I just found. If you want to voice your carny disappointment, apparently you can call HBO at 310-382-3000 and leave an indignant voicemail. (There'd better be good news about Arrested Development soon or there'll be too much disappointment to handle for me to handle.)
Anybody see the trailers for Narnia and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory or the HP: Goblet of Fire footage that aired tonight? I'd seen the Narnia trailer online already but it was much more impressive on the big screen. The Charlie trailer was mostly stuff that's been online a long time too...I love Johnny Depp and usually like Tim Burton's work but I'm not sold on that one yet. The only reason I sat through that three hour version of Chamber of Secrets was for the sneak peek at Goblet, and they didn't show much except a bit of what looks like a musical sequence (?) and some agonizingly short clips of some of the Big Scenes (dragons, mermaids, etc). The only trailers that have really made me say wow lately have been the ones for Narnia and ROTS...
I wonder what age it is when you look at sugary crap and all you can think of is TEETH. I think that's gotta be the age where you're officially a grownup.

Yea. Sort of disappointed about Carnivale. But I have to admit I was watching it out of habit than really enjoying it. I found the first season kind of boring. Sometimes I would read and watch the show at the same time. The second season was better, but once again I found myself saying get on with it. No answers were provided. Plus, the Carnivale supporting cast were basically reduced to extras this year.

I'm actually kind of glad that the series ended like it did this year, with the preacher destroyed. Maybe they'll do a miniseries in the future.

I do agree that AD is a great show. If Fox cancels it, another network should pick it up.

What questions Marb?

I am the worst ebayer in ebay history. Every time I think I have a winner for sale (with MANY looks), I get burned. I do my homework, see what's hot but it NEVER works. I never make any money and usually have a loss or sell at a VERY disappointing sale price.
Inversely, I always seem to be making other people richer. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING. What gives???

P.S. I saw the Diet Pepsi commercial. Good stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/08/2005 10:07 PM EST

Pop Tarts is alright. I only eat the s'mores kind, but I'm sure it's not the most terrible food ever created. I know Orbitz was a drink, but that's something pretty terrible.

The Retrocrush review makes a good point that the prequels are basically one story stretched out for three movies, but I thought that was the point of why they were made - to show how Anakin became Darth Vader. I'm sure the third will be decent, probably slightly better than the previous two since I think it's hard to screw up a movie that's basically "Hey, that Anakin is pretty pissed. I wonder what he does...".

Chestnuts roasted by Dr. Acula @ 05/08/2005 10:10 PM EST

/start rant

Wow, that retrocrush review really irritated the hell out of me. These fanboys have their little metal bikini bottoms all caught up in a bunch. He seems like one of those people who'll hate things and want make you hate them without supplying the whole story....

Case in point, his little tirade about Obi Wan leaving Anakin to die. He conveniently leaves out the part about the dialogue that goes on right before he walks away. In the screenplay, while Ankakin is screaming for Obi Wan to help him, Obi Wan tells Ankain that he loves him, and that Anakin was like a brother to him. That he loves him, but he won't help him. It's also in the novelization of the movie. It makes perfect sense he would not help him. Nevermind all the shit Anakin had done up to that point, and now betrays Obi Wan by trying to kill him during, you know, that whole lightsaber duel thing. Nevermind the fact that Anakin/Vader has aligned himself with a Sith Lord. Nevermind a dozen other factors. Nice try Robert.

I'm a huge Star Wars fanboy, but I hate when these guys get all bent out of shape because line 8 of page 36 of Episode II's script doesn't jive with line 3 on page 27 of Episode V's script. IF anyone rememebers, the first trilogies movies where thought to be campy and corny as hell, but look at their status now. People tend to lose sight of what Lucas created. A movie franchise that spans 30 years, has proviced countless memories, hours of entertainment, and are just plain fun to watch. Some people are so damn uptight...

/end rant

Oh, and he hates Transformers...? I take personal offense to that.....

Pop Tarts:
I enjoy them but I only have them as reserve for when I run out of milk/cereal. Favourite flavour? Chocolate or Marshmallow (sickly yeah but I'm not too fond of fruity flavours).
I've never decided whether I prefer them cold or toasted. Other opinions...

Star Wars Ep3:
I personally enjoy Eps 1 and 2 a great deal - in fact the dialogue provides some of my most fav moments humour-wise (I don't like sand. It's rough and coarse. Not like you, you're soft and smooth. HA!)

My anticipation for RotS is starting to reach boiling point and whatever the outcome, it will complete a six film saga that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

The thing about reviews that are that negative is that, often, the reviewer is such a huge fan of the existing works within the same franchise that they'll get so hung up on minor details in the newest work that they can't see the forest for the trees. It's like with über-fan MJ Simpsons's plot point-by-plot point review of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film; I agree with him on many of the major flaws, especially the romance not to mention the way they took the wit out of a few important pieces of dialogue, and I don't think the film quite measures up to the TV programme (which I know much better than the Douglas Adams books, to be perfectly honest), but there was still enough in the film for me to like it despite the flaws.

But I like both of the previous prequels anyway, and my favourite Star Wars film is Return of the Jedi, so I doubt there's any chance that I'll dislike Revenge of the Sith. Especially considering that I've read all the spoilers elsewhere and still want to see it.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about what RetroCrush says...didn't the dude say he *LIKED* the Hitchhiker's Guide movie? razz I've read the books, and have not, nor will I ever see the movie. Among the many things wrong with the movie from what I saw from pictures, was the appearance of Zaphod. In the books (and other media) he had TWO heads and THREE arms...in the movie he looks like the freakin' lead singer of Nickelback. razz

Chestnuts roasted by The Dragon @ 05/09/2005 11:59 PM EST

I had a pretty generous opinion of Hitchhiker's, but I can't say I disagree with any of the (many) negative points in that review. It really is worth a watch for the gooshy feelings, but it ain't great and probably isn't going to stand up to repeat viewings. Maybe's it's good practice for Star Wars...
King, that You Can't Do That On Televsion ref on Family Guy was great. Trio's been showing Laugh-In lately; I knew there was an influence but sheesh. Those Canadian's oughta be paying royalties.

Me: Okay, I want Samuel L. Jackson, the black guy in the mask, the tattooed freak, the little green guy...
Lady: Oh okay (fishes through boxes)

I don't know what's worse, calling them by their real names and getting nowhere, or just breaking it down bare bones and sounding like a nerdy fanboy...

Semper Fi,
Erik Majorwitz

P.S. I eventually ended up with Darth Vader/A.Skywalker, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Yoda, Mace Windu, and Obi-Wan Kenobi while my stepdaughters got the "girls," though one wasn't thrilled when she found out hers died. Damn George Lucas.

Erik, did you actually have to buy like eight kids meals, or did they just give them to you? I have thi crazy vision of you buying a dozen bags of food, then ripping them apart to find the toys! smile

I've never seen the first 7 Friday the 13th movies. They were banned in my house as a kid and I avoided them in college untill I could give Jason a marathon.

A few months ago I picked up a RCA videodisc player and the first 5 F13th movies on CED.
DVDs would be better quality but CEDs are too much 80s fun. Part 3 came with 3-D glasses and it appears they work well with the movie.

I can't decide if I should run through the series this Friday or save it up for Halloween fun.

Yo KB!

No, they had it if you bought an adult value meal, you can make it a "Jedi" meal and buy two toys for only $3.50 more.

So I did go back for multiple meals that day for myself, my wife, and they come free for the stepdaughters in BK Kids Meals...

I'm pretty tight with the peeps there (I'm like at the food court everyday, the life of a house husband) so I figure I could just fork over a $50 and get the rest and extras.

Eighty something ... eth post. Wee. I've had those lava-berry poptarts. I saw them at a Wal*Mart, and seeing Vader on the label, couldn't not buy them. Like you, I usually don't go much for pop-tarts (or any sugar-laden junk food for that matter), but I found those are pretty good if you DON'T toast them.

As for your friend at Retrocrush hating Episode III ... all I can say is it has Digital Age Syndrome. When my site (Falling Down) is up, you can read about that little malady. Myself, I'm more hyped about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the books being a childhood favorite.

I really don't like fanboys. Especially the ones whose perspective is so limited they cannot understand things without it being spelt out to them.

Obi-Wan is a Jedi knight, even if the Order has been destroyed. Jedi don't kill helpless opponents who pose no immediate threat to them. More importantly, Anakin was his friend.
And how else do they explain how Anakin Skywalker eventually had to become 'more machine than man'?

As for Padme, not only did Anakin force-choke her, she died of a broken heart from his evil deeds. Unless you don't understand love, her death is pretty easy to explain from a dramatic point.

ME - Thanks for the CED link.

I ended up with three players and bins and bins of movies. It's a bit much and I haven't sorted through it but I couldn't pass up a ready-made collection, especially when it was free.

I went to BK today and got a Millenium Falcon and a Han Solo encased-in-carbonite. They are so adorable...but there are 31 different toys and I want them all and really don't need to eat that many burgers. They make you think you're getting a bargain with the Jedi deal, but I think if you actually wanted that much food you'd be better off buying kids meals. I bought another Star Wars lotto ticket today too, but it was the same one I got last time and a loser to boot.

I swear its the 14th of May...You woudlnt know it by this site...why dont you update once in a while...jesus dude!!

This site may be fun to do, but I'm sure he has a "real job" that demands quite a bit of attention. Or something.
It was kind-of irritating at the end of January, but now I like the Christmas thing. A couple of weeks ago, Adult Swim ran some Christmas bumpers and I loved it because it was all out of context.
By the way, I just found an old Sears Wish List catalog from 1992. I'd like to do some kind of article on it, but I've just got a gay-ass Livejournal account...
Livejournal's not totally gay, but it just seems it's chock full of furries and girls who eat their feelings and blog about their cats.

I don't think that Vader likes eat that stuff.... really I think that Vader doesn't eat anything at all!!

Chestnuts roasted by Yelinna @ 05/14/2005 06:39 PM EST

Yelinna -- Of course he eats SOMETHING. He may be more machine than man, but there's still a lot of man there too. We know for a fact his head is all still organic, and I'd bet his heart is still there (or else his lungs, which we know he has, would be unnecessary).

With those organic components (and the most vital ones your body has, excluding certain unmentionables), he has to eat something in some sense. Or his organics (living tissue) would die out, and he would be all machine, no man.

Even if his idea of eating is some kind of introvenously-fed protein/vitamin goo like they give coma patients via IVs, it's still "eating". I hate to be a nitpicking little prig about this, but I just hate it when people make blatantly uninformed statements that they couldn't have possibly thought through before stating.

Maybe he puts his pop-tarts in a blender and adds them to his IV nutrient drip.

Or maybe we all need to quit spending so much time in front of computers and go be with the three-dimensional people ... Yeah. Definitely.

As per what's-his-name bitching about the Xmas theme ... yeah I'm sure Matt has a "real" job he has to spend his time on (so do I hence my site not being even UP yet), but that's not the only problem. What time he has for the site I imagien goes to adding CONTENT before anything else ... we still see new articles once a week or so. If he took that time to update the skin on the site, I guarantee you there would be no new content for two to three weeks, as a complex, photoshop-sliced link table setup like his and my working design are a lot of work to modify. Give the guy a break ... I think you owe him one of those fossilized kool-aid packets he collects, for being so mean.

Ok I bought these the other day and they are frigg'n nasty. Only smores pop tarts remain good.

Chestnuts roasted by the80sruled @ 05/16/2005 06:21 AM EST

Uh huh. You toasted them, didn't you? Don't do that. I do agree that 99% of all poptarts are nasty though.

regarding Obi Wan leaving Anakin scene...the dialogue you quote from the script and the novelization makes sense, but it's not in the film.

Something is very disturbing about eating these. With the recent event of the human finger in Wendy's chili, do you think anyone will sue for eating a small portion of Darth's lava burnt legs?
