04/12/2005 Entry: "I'm wearing Doc Ock's arm."

I’m wearing Otto’s arm.
While “Hulk Hands” and “Thing Feet” may forever lead the pack as far as the coolest wearable Marvel Comics toys go, the “Doc Ock Arm” is a nice bronze medal. Though the decision to make Doctor Octopus the lead villain of Spider-Man 2 was met with some concern initially, the character ended up being completely entrancing. Whether this means kids are up for the challenge of dressing like Doc Ock is up for debate, but I can’t imagine many people of any age turning down a giant plastic claw arm – especially a giant plastic claw arm that really works.

Retailing for under ten bucks, the arm has a handle control that both conceals your hand and allows you to make the claw seize and let go of things at will. It’s not large or sturdy enough to pick up anything terribly cool (wash away any fantasies about drinking a one-liter Coke with it), but it’ll grab hold of enough little things to impress your friends or annoy the holy hell out of any house pets unlucky enough to have a tail.

Not a bad little toy. You may want to wait for the big clearance (I suspect these will be marked down quite a bit when the time comes, as they’re not shaped for standard shelf space), but yeah…picking up junk with Doc Ock’s arm…neat. More pics: Package header. - YEEEHAW. - Claw in action.

I'm hearing those Betty Crocker cake pan ads as "Bacon-filled cakes."
Now to the article...

I miss my Wacky Wall Walker (Texas Ranger). hmmm.... If I get two of these, I might have the perfect accoutrement for my Hallowe'en costume.

heh, pretty tits.....

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 04/12/2005 03:29 PM EST

As usual, a Wacky Wall Walker will ALWAYS attract hair and lint. It's impossible to avoid. Clean it off all you want, but you turn around for a second, and somehow, someway, there's crap stuck to it.

yeah those are pretty sweet. i saw one kid get in trouble at target for slapping his buddy with the arm on.

p.s. i saw this video on a link site, and it seems to be a pretty untapped resource for xe-style madness. asian kids show:

Yeah, I wanted to get one but I am holding out for the clearance. Reminds me of that episode of ALF where he uses one of those claws to set up condiments all around him so that he won't have to get up from his seat. It is one of those scenes that was cut out of the DVD (head shaking derisively)

Thanks Eddie, I'm insane now.

you're welcome. i loved the theme song so much i ripped it. big grin

Speaking of Wacky Wallwalkers, they're supposed to come out with Mr. Fantasic ones for the upcoming Fantasic Four movie. No Thing or Human Torch ones either, just different versions of Reed Richards in various stretchy postitions. Makes sense, when you think about it.

Chestnuts roasted by Overlord @ 04/12/2005 07:15 PM EST

Yo,

When do we get to see the terrifying sight of a Hulk Hand, an Ock claw and the Thing feet being worn all at the same time???

Chuck in an offshoot from the Halloween specials (perhaps the Hockey mask) and we've got a real superhero on our hands..or claws.

Chestnuts roasted by Kmann @ 04/12/2005 07:49 PM EST

Man I could scratch my ass all day with those things. And in Spidey style!!! Woo-hoo.

Chestnuts roasted by Don't Touch, Willy. @ 04/12/2005 08:05 PM EST

Um, interesting. I finally got to a Toys R Us today, and while I didn't see Doc Oct's arm (I'm no big "Spider Man" fan, anyway), I DID see Thing feet and hands and lots of Star Wars stuff. I resisted the M&Ms this time (although the one with Blue cracking bald jokes next to Mace Windu was amusing) and went for two action figures of characters I don't have - Anakin Skywalker and young Obi Wan Kenobi - at surprisingly low prices. I expected them to be at least twice what they were. I couldn't find Darth Tater (and didn't really have the time to look), but I did see some oh-so-cute Playschool "Star Wars" action figure, including the most cuddly Chewbacca and C3PO on record.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 04/12/2005 09:44 PM EST

Didn't I see that Doc Ock Arm in an infomercial a few years ago? I think it may have been a double feature w/ the HoverRound Power Chair on the B side, at no additional cost to me.

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 04/12/2005 10:00 PM EST

i would love to do dirty things with that

Chestnuts roasted by modern day pirates @ 04/12/2005 10:13 PM EST

Considering Matt buys junk like this all the time, there's no way he has room for every single thing he's bought since the birth of X-E as "Subvulture" in 2000. Does he have the mother of all yard sales every so often, or does he rent out nine storage lockers?

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 04/13/2005 01:53 AM EST

Hmm, did you try to pick up any taddy bears with that thing? You could confirm/deny my theory that it's literally impossible for big claws to lift plush toys.

Chestnuts roasted by luigihann @ 04/13/2005 02:14 AM EST

Sweet. Much better than a regular arm.

I was always a big fan of Dr. Octopus. He was a multi-tasker. Do you know how many grocery bags you could carry with those mechanical arms, in addition to your own? A lot.

They should really have Rhino be the next Spider-man movie villain. I would like to see how they'd adapt a guy in a rhino suit with just his face peeking out into something less or more ridiculous. They could go either way.

Chestnuts roasted by Dr. Acula @ 04/13/2005 02:29 AM EST

I'd like to hit the dance floor wearing a pair of those bad boys! Booyah.

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 04/13/2005 03:40 AM EST

I'd buy some of those if they were like 10 to 15 feet long... oh, and able to lift more than a wacky wall walker...

Did you try to lift a can of beer with it? or open the fridge?

Chestnuts roasted by bad karma @ 04/13/2005 08:59 AM EST

I was playing with these in the store, they seemed pretty incapable of grabbing anything over 1/2 a pound.

Cool cool! I want one, no two!

Just read on the Smurfs posting something written by Matt himself....something I have been waiting for, and have asked for multiple times.....Matt is thinking of reviewing "Mac & Me"- Yes.

I hope that the police department buys these to give to the criminals that clean up the highway.

Buy one of these, and order a few of those "Bling It On" kits, and presto! Otto Octavius, Vegas style! Eight-armed and faaaab-ulous!

Do ALF pogs count as nostalgic?

Chestnuts roasted by RAS @ 04/13/2005 02:44 PM EST

I think you could consider ALF pongs to be nostalgic!!!!!! But anyway, that thing looks cool. I'd like to run after someone with that going "Fear the wrath of the CLAW!" Hey, it would be great to reenact scenes from "Inspector Gadget" with that thing. His name was DR. CLAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did he actually have a claw??? I can't remember! Oooh, that was brilliant.

Anyways, I gotta go to class now to learn about Radio. Coolness! smile

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 04/13/2005 03:26 PM EST

Pimps could wear these instead of carrying a cane. An idea perhaps...

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 04/13/2005 03:28 PM EST

I found a Ghostbusters II storybook full of actual pictures from the movie. There's an awesome shot of Slimer chowing on some donuts in the Ghostbuster Headquarters, and a full page shot of the infamous Ghostbusters are Angels painting. Anyone interested?

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 04/13/2005 03:50 PM EST

That claw looks like it'll provide entertainment for about 20 seconds. They should have waited for Halloween to release that thing!

Allison, if I recall correctly, didn't Dr. Claw have a removable hand/claw? Didn't he have a removable hand with a kit of spare tools to attach. For instance, if he needed a knife he would remove the hand and put on a knife attachment. I could be mixing this up with Dr. Klahn (sp?) from the Fistful of Yen portion of Kentucky Fried Movie. "This is Dr. Klan. We not home right now. Please leave a message when you hear the beep. You have our gratitude. GONG." I digress.

WTF was Dr. Claw's cat's name? He would always beat the crap outta that cat when he got pissed at Inspector Gadget.

Chestnuts roasted by Pedro @ 04/13/2005 04:08 PM EST

MAD-cat. In the cartoon, Dr. claw was just an unseen Evil Overlord-type. He did wear metal gauntlets, but not a single claw.

Maxwell Smart: Who are you?
The Claw (in thick asian accent): The Craw!
Smart: The... Craw?
The Claw: No! Not The "Craw," (holds up claw) The CRAW!
Smart: Oh, The Craw.

I'm dying laughing here, kingklash! I used to LOVE Get Smart. I haven't seen it in forever.

I wanted to weigh in on the POG thing mentioned by Allison. Here in the midwest at least, Pogs didn't come around til the early 90's. Even then, they never really got big. I remember Kmart and Walmart would continously discount those things, trying like hell to sell them. I think they may have eventually marketed them as chair leg coasters. (okay, maybe now).

As Yoda would say, "Nostalgic, they are not."

Chestnuts roasted by bad karma @ 04/14/2005 09:45 AM EST

Whenever I'm at flea markets, I keep an eye out for dusty piles of POGs. I'm still hunting for what I consider the "Ultimate POG" which would have a skull, Yin-Yang, eight-ball, flames, Ace of Spades (preferably in a Dead Man's Hand), and maybe a snake all prominently displayed. I have a couple of close ones, but no Ultimate. I have the Apllo 13 rocket Hardee's gave out a long time ago with A13 POGs.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 04/14/2005 11:29 AM EST

I would think that a new smurfs cartoon would be considered nostalgic on some level, so why not old characters from the past on new things. ie alf on pogs.
btw what did one do with pogs?

Chestnuts roasted by RAS @ 04/14/2005 11:50 AM EST

You played a game where you stacked a bunch of pogs face up and then slammed a slammer (a big, thicker pog) down onto the stack, and however many pogs flipped over, you got to keep.

Chestnuts roasted by TJeremy @ 04/14/2005 12:03 PM EST

Keep the Christmas theme alive until August in a tribute to the great "Crazy" Eddie Antell. I remember he used to have a Christmas in August sale. I used to look forward to that sale as a kid, just for the goofy commercials. His prices were INNN-SSAAAAANNNNNNEE!!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Pedro @ 04/14/2005 01:20 PM EST

Has any one else had the Star Wars Pop-Tarts? The whole thing is RED!

Chestnuts roasted by shadowofdoubt @ 04/14/2005 01:28 PM EST

I have a couple of POG videos (I saw that Matt had one of them in one of the various photos of his room), and I think the best one would make X-Ers chuckle thanks to who hosts it.

Chestnuts roasted by ME @ 04/14/2005 01:36 PM EST

Actually, Steve Allen is on The Ultimate POG.

And remember ALF? He's back...in POG form!

Both simpsons references ^_~

This is from www.thedigitalbits.com about He-Man

In other news, BCI Eclipse has announced that they'll be releasing the complete, classic 1980s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series on DVD over the next two years. The first release, due 7/12, will be a 2-disc The Best of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 10-episode collection. It will include 5 first season episodes, and 5 second season episodes, along with documentary interviews with a variety of talent involved with the original series, including writers, directors, artists and others. It will also include a pair of 4" x 6" art cards by Bruce Timm and Adam Hughes. There's even better news from BCI's press release:

"Beginning this fall, BCI Eclipse will begin releasing the complete, 130-episode series in multi-disc “season” box sets, each including an abundance of extras that, altogether, will make up the most comprehensive collection of extras ever produced for a classic animation DVD series. Consulting with BCI on the project and providing extra content is Val Staples, the owner of He-Man.org, the internet's largest portal for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe fan community, the owner of MVCreations graphic design company, and the publisher of the recent Masters of the Universe comic. Producing the special features documentaries and most of the extra content is entertainment writer Andy Mangels, a best-selling novelist, and author of Animation on DVD: The Ultimate Guide."

Okay RAS, taken in the context you've given as an example (Nostalgic Characters on new items) I'd agree with you. But Pogs alone???

It made/makes me laugh though, you asking what one did with pogs. I don't think I personally ever knew. Thanks to TJeremy we've been enlightened. I still like my idea of using them for chair coasters.
