12/06/2004 Entry: "Advent Calendar @ The Sushi Bar!"

It's a big day on the Advent Calendar, as Mare, Knacks and Kuse celebrate their Christmas tree with a huge feast at the local sushi bar. They might even meet a new friend. It's a medium day on the Advert Calendar, as I make up for the crappy Dearfoams download with something you'll like better: the original Super Mario Bros. 2 for the NES. Enjoy. And what's your favorite Christmas/holiday song?

"Oh Holy Night" for favorite religious song. "Christmas, Don't Be Late" for novelty. I'll cut if off here before it turns into a laundry list.

Hey, my first 'first post' since the blog was in it's wee little infancy.
Nice to see Kuse cutting loose and having some fun. This is my favorite so far.

Okay, I wanna know where in the Hell you got a play sushi bar???? Matt, you're a genius.

Wow! As much as I have a great memory with Nintendo stuff, I totally don't remember this SMB2 commercial at all. The memories of me playing it on my NES 15 years ago just rushed back to me. Thanks for posting this video up! big grin

Bad Religion's redition of Silent Night, mostly because they manage to put My Sharona in there, absolutely out of nowhere, and slip back just as easily. Beautiful. Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey is my new number 2 though.

Favorite X-mas songs: Elvis Presley's "Santa Bring my Baby Back to Me". In fact anything on his Christmas album, plus anything on "Christmas With Coniff" - Scary, isn't it? but such was my childhood...And can I say that if I hear Madonna's Cyndi Lauper rip-off version of "Santa Baby" one more time, I'm gonna slap somebody!

I'm glad to see Mare showing the gang some multi-cultural cusine. I was starting to worry about them.

Also, awesome find on the SMB2 commercial... I've been looking for that one for awhile.

O Holy Night sung by Cartman, and Korn's version of Jingle Bells.

Carol of the Bells. Me and my buds composed a heavy metal version to play at the town's community talent show. We won 4th place. WOOHOO! TEN DOLLARS TO SPLIT BETWEEN FOUR PEOPLE! YAHOO!

Carol of the Bells by Manheim Steamroller. Absolute favorite.

Yay for the Mario commercial! When I was a kid I totally wanted one of those things. I was a girly-girl, (barbies, the works) but I loved video games. Mom & Dad never allowed one in the house, so when I got married, the husband and I stocked up. We have almost every game console (except Playstation. I hate their games.) We have all-night marathons on the weekends. (Right now the husband is gearing up to play Halo2 on Xbox live.)

Today's adventure was awesome- drunk at a sushi bar- I never saw this coming!

Thanks for the wicked Super Mario 2 commerical! I also panted for that game, but didn't remember the ad.

Best Xmas songs ever? "Jingle Bell Rock" as sung by the Muppets and "Happy Xmas (War is over)" by John Lennon

Keep the crazy drunken advents coming! smile

Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?". A Christmas perennial for me ever since the mid-eighties.

DUDE. Is that the Bratz Sushi Bar playset? I hope you burned those Bratz dolls in the name of all things .. namely. Anyway ..

BEST. EPISODE. EVER.

Dominic the Christmas Donkey right outta nowhere, and I fell in love with it. I've been making donkey noises all day at work. Could that be why they fired me today? Nahhhhh!

As for the advert (as the Brits call it): I don't like how that guy says Mario. "Marry-o. Marry-o." I hate that guy.

This was pure, unadultered X-E genius. It's already close to topping last year's advent.

I like Frank Sinatra's I'll be Home for Christmas and Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel for the religious themed song.

Chestnuts roasted by ANdrew @ 12/07/2004 09:03 AM EST

I'm with Overlord on this one - Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" is the song that gets me feeling the most festive.

And of course, I'm talking about the 1984 version and not 2004's rerelease/butchering. (Don't go there. No good.)

Chestnuts roasted by Ginrai @ 12/07/2004 09:20 AM EST

DTKIChristmas is probably my fave, but I just really like the song and the artists in it, I'm not so sure if it's fair to lop it into the Christmas pile. But that's probably the one. I like Paul Mc's SHAWChristmas Time quite a bit, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 12/07/2004 09:48 AM EST

You can't go wrong with Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas"

Chestnuts roasted by J-Dog @ 12/07/2004 10:01 AM EST

I have WAY too many Favorite Christmas songs to mention here, but if I had to choose, I'd go with Mannheim Steamroller's rendition of "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen."

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 12/07/2004 10:23 AM EST

For secular fun, I like Silver Bells. But for religious, I'll have to say Little Drummer Boy, if it's done right.

I remember Super Mario 2 being sold out EVERYWHERE.

The ending Super Mario 2 was so dumb. It was all a dream??? Thanks, Nintendo.

Chestnuts roasted by Jeff Mack @ 12/07/2004 10:27 AM EST

Though it has nothing to do with Christmas, "Winter Wonderland" has long been my favorite secular holiday song. I guess I like it because white Christmases are about as common down here in southern New Jersey as mountains and people on the boardwalk in December. Favorite religious-themed Christmas song is "The First Noel." I like its simplicity.

Today's Advent Calender was classic. Where in the heck DID Matt pick up a mini-sushi bar? No matter, it made for hilarious Playmobil-fueled comedy. I said it last year and I'll say it again. Matt, what you do with 25 Playmobil toys (and a couple of stray odd Legos) is nothing short of inspired.

Ahh, how well I remember that "Super Mario Bros 2" commercial, and the game itself. Mario 2 reigned for years as the only Mario franchise game my sibilings and I failed to make heads or tails of. It wasn't until my family aquired a copy of Super Mario All Stars on for the SNES we were able to make heads or tails of it. Still, we had a great time trying. I recently picked up a copy of the original Super Mario 2 from a local Electronic Boutique, so now I can try all over again.

Okay, now I see why people were waiting for the advent calendar. It really is a nice thing to come home to at night. Reminds me of how I always looked forward to the Far Side when it was still on. And the sushi special was incredible!

Off the top, in no particular manner, cause there's so many faves-
Churchy: Angels We Have Heard on High, We Three Kings. Any halfway competant choir can do justice to those, though some singers have tried to do some damage. Loved the Claymation Camels singing "Kings."
Secularlarlar: Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman. Rudy is the original mutant outcast hero! How can you not love his tune? And Frosty? Two words: ICE GOLEM!
Novelty: All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, the Spike Jones version, The Chipmunk Song. I'm a big Spike Jones fan, and this is one of the funniest ones. Not only do Alvin & co. owe their careers to this one, it still inspires dozens of really bad Xmas novelty songs to this day.

Hey, has anybody out there have those vending machines at their local Wal-Mart that dispenses Choco Tacos?

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 12/07/2004 12:52 PM EST

I want a Playmobil advent calendar so bad! i had a Lego one a couple years back... kind of teh suck. normally, i love the Lego, but blocky santa just isn't doing anything for me. and the Playmobil tree kicks the Lego tree's butt. or whatever trees have instead of butts.

so at the Playmobil website, they have like, 3 different ones. which one do you have? you probably have all 3 you sly dog.

I agree Andrew, Sinatra's I'll Be Home for Christmas is my favorite. Last year I bought the DVD titled "Christmas with Bing and Frank". It's so corny, but it's awesome. It's just those two in different scenes, naturally singing their Christmas songs as they do other stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by Y2JB78 @ 12/07/2004 02:13 PM EST

The 12 Pains of Christmas.

And this is the best Advent entry ever thanks to the drunk scene. When they aren't abusive, drunk people are very, very funny.

Chestnuts roasted by Behonkiss @ 12/07/2004 03:04 PM EST

I enjoy the version of "12 Days Of Christmas" that Frank did with his children, "SHAWChristmas Time" for it's synth-esque sounds, "Women's Underwear" (goes to the tune of "Winter Wonderland"wink, and the pardoy of "Iron Man" that's about Santa.

I've always been a big fan of "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" by The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Mostly because I'm such a progressive rock geek I guess. For a fun second, I'd have to lean on "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses.

Chestnuts roasted by Tom @ 12/07/2004 05:41 PM EST

After working 2 Christmas seasons in a toy Store, most of the traditional songs (as well as their 1000+ covers) I cannot even bear to listen to anymore.

But the ones I still like are: "Christmas Don't Be Late" by Alvin In The Chipmunks for some reason, and several songs from the "Mr Hankey's Christmas Classics" CD from South Park, like "Mr Hankey The Christmas Poo," "Merry F***ing Christmas" and "Christmastime in Hell"

Speaking of the which, Cartman's cover of "O Holy Night" was voted to be the Worst Holiday Song Ever by some magazine or something.

And one more thing, where can one get the Playmobil Advent Calendar in the first place? I'd like to see this for myself...

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 12/07/2004 06:25 PM EST

My absolute, favorite Christmas song is "Silver Bells." Right now I have the damn "We Are Santa's Elves" song from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer stuck in my head, though. Evil little elves...!

Chestnuts roasted by KK @ 12/07/2004 07:19 PM EST

it won't load past dec. 3 for me. *cries* i'll have to try tomorrow from work.

i like "do you hear what i hear?" for traditional carols, and "you're a mean one, mr. grinch" for novelty.

meep.

There's another JG that posted something so I have to clarify.
Anyways, I like Christmas at Ground Zero!

I know it's cheating, but I have two favorite Xmas albums.

First is the Christmas EP by Low. (Check their site for an MP3 from this record.) This has some original songs, as well as their versions of "Little Drummer Boy," "Silent Night," and "Blue Christmas."

Second is North: Winter Solstice by Coil. This is worth getting just for their version of "Christmas is Now Drawing Near," though the rest of the CD is also good.

This may seem kinda weird, but last weekend - while decorating my house for Christmas - I kept singing "Making Christmas" from the Nightmare Before Christmas movie. I think it's my favorite holiday song.
Grimly wrapping the tree in tinsel, muttering "See how I transform this old rat / Into a most delightful hat!"

Chestnuts roasted by Master Harold @ 12/08/2004 12:42 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by A-wel Cruiz @ 12/08/2004 07:11 PM EST

I love most of those S. Park Xmas songs, especially Cartman's Oh Holy Night and the duet between Santa and Jesus. SHAWXmas is a fav as well, but the synthiness gets a little played out by the time 12/25 rolls around.
Since we're on the subject, can someone explain why "Greensleeves" is in constant rotation on the office Xmas background music? I can see the Christmas connection with "My Favorite Things" though it seems like a stretch, but "Greensleeves"? Maybe it's something blatantly obvious...

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 12/08/2004 10:08 PM EST

My favorite is "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "What Child is This?" preferably sung by a group of cold carolers of which I am a member.

Chestnuts roasted by Jane! @ 12/09/2004 12:54 AM EST

Squee, the tune of "Greensleeves" is used in the carol "What Child is This?", mentioned in an earlier post, though the tune itself is much older than the song, I believe.
