09/25/2004 Entry: "Halloween Countdown: Spooky Lucky Charms!"

I really want to get some of the Halloween cereals out of the way quick, because even with the total count collected thus far at eight, I have a sneaky suspicion they'll be more soon. With that, today's Countdown entry centers in on Spooky Lucky Charms, featuring Lucky the Leprechaun in a bat costume and marshmallows shaped like spell books. It's better than the Kellogg's Halloween cereal, but we'll see how it holds up against Count Chocula and pals soon enough.

First! Hurray for my quickness.

I always thought Lucky was evil... Evil Lucky... LUCKY EVIL!

I for one will not be buying this. I am waiting for the Limited Edition Arbor Day Lucky Charms. I hear they have moon-shaped marshmallows, hehe. There are too many cereals nowadays. I could be Seinfeld, and still have too many fucking cereals to eat them all before they went stale!! Oh well, good article.

Any more details on the commercial airtime?

Chestnuts roasted by kidneyboy @ 09/25/2004 03:11 PM EST

I always knew that leprechauns were evil. Lucky must be a cousin of the one from that Jennifer Aniston movie. It all makes sense now.

Hey Matt, have you seen Frankenberry yet? I live nearby on Long Island and I haven't seen it yet...maybe i'm just looking in the wrong places, or am I to early?

What I would do right now for a bowl of Frankenberry...I swear that I haven't had that for about 10 years...

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 09/25/2004 03:31 PM EST

Frank's out there, along with Choc and Boo. And new marshmallows.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/25/2004 03:32 PM EST

Thanks Matt! Now that I know that Frank is out there...its only a matter of where...I'll be sure to post my discovery when I come across him!

IS IT ME OR IS THIS THE WORLDS BEST WEBSITE ON THE NET...OR WHAT?
Just though I'd ask.

I'd like to point out that the Mystical Moon and Bubbling Cauldron are just the Blue Moon and Pot of Gold with different colors.

Chestnuts roasted by TB Tabby @ 09/25/2004 04:13 PM EST

Think of the oat pieces that no one eats as magical runes. Yeah, that's it.

Shakin' shakin' wake up!

Chestnuts roasted by JG! @ 09/25/2004 04:28 PM EST

No chance of Warwick Davis on the box, is there? "I'm taking back me gold, but first, a nutritious breakfast before I rip yer lungs out, ya wee bastards."

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 09/25/2004 05:22 PM EST

TB Tabby, the "magic books" are actually the rainbows.

The reason why Lucky didn't use pumpkins marshmallows because everyone else does that...Lucky is just that awesome...and evil.

EEEEEVIIIIILLL!!!!!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 09/25/2004 05:27 PM EST

What a rip! What kind of effort does it take to create three new marshmallow molds?!? Guess Lucky was too busy on his misbegotten yacht to care. PS: NEO - RIGHT ON MAN!

I STILL have yet to see any of these Halloween-themed cereals down here in Southern New Jersey. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. I tend to reach for whatever cereal is on sale that won't send me into total sugar shock, and I'm no great fan of marshmallows, either.

I'm a frequent lurker, and I'm having a really boring Saturday night. Anyone else stuck doing nothing?

Chestnuts roasted by Hyde @ 09/25/2004 08:03 PM EST

Hyde, woohoooo for having no life!
anyone ever buy cocoa bat peeps? been looking since LAST YEAR and have found NONE, where do i get the COCOA BAT PEEPS?!!! WHERE?!!

Chestnuts roasted by ralph @ 09/25/2004 08:11 PM EST

Yay, a soul!

Haven't seen the bats, but I've seen the ghosts and pumpkins everywhere.

Chestnuts roasted by Hyde @ 09/25/2004 08:11 PM EST

Hey that cat bit looks looks like a Jesus Fish! Obviously the work of the devil.

Chestnuts roasted by dfgd @ 09/25/2004 08:35 PM EST

The oat pieces are a fish and a cross, symbols commonly associated with Christianity. The marshmallows are good-lock charms with Pagan roots. The message of Lucky Charms: although the sugary sweetness of Paganism may seen pleasing at first, it will ultimately lead down the road to decay, Whereas the oat pieces of Christianity, while not nearly as sweet, are much better for you in the long run.

Chestnuts roasted by TB Tabby @ 09/25/2004 09:05 PM EST

I have never eaten Lucky Charms before, yet at a quick glance all those marshmallows are obviously "variants".

The ghost is obviously a comet or shooting star. Only one that might be original is the bat.

What a ripoff.

Chestnuts roasted by Piscez @ 09/25/2004 09:09 PM EST

What a total letdown.

Where are the marshmallow pentagrams? The white-and-red marshmallow skulls? The putrid green-and-purple zombies? The red-and-black spiders?

Lucky's not evil. As someone pointed out in a much earlier blog post, if he was evil, he would just use his magick powers to turn those damn kids into human marshwallows.

Chestnuts roasted by Night_Trekker @ 09/25/2004 09:38 PM EST

Hmm.. I have yet to see Halloween themed cereals, however Lucky Charms does nothing for me.
As far as cereals go, give me a bowl of Rice Crispies, without all the fancy bells and whistles of sugary additives and I'll be happy.
However, I do like the art of the Lucky Charms box.

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 09/26/2004 12:13 AM EST

If I were General Mills, I wouldn't put "150 calories per serving" right on the front of the box. Even if you try to fool people by placing weird health-related icons right by it, 150 calories is still kind of high.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 09/26/2004 01:29 AM EST

Think of the oat pieces that no one eats

That reminds me; Lucky actually brought this up once when he showed the oat pieces leaving the bowl in a blubbering, miserable single-file line, because they were tired of being outshone by the marshmallows. In response, Lucky frosted over the oat pieces. I don't know if that "stuck" but I haven't heard of the deal since.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 09/26/2004 01:32 AM EST

I want to make a really off-topic comment, but I'd feel bad doing that, so I'll disguise with some marshmallow junk. As a vegan, I really don't eat a lot of Lucky Charms - more like none at all. However, I do have a certain appreciation for any cereal that attempts to appear spooky through the addition of small, sugary croissants.

Okay, now on to the important stuff. A quick search of the site reveals that the cassette "Hulk Rules!" has never been mentioned on X-Entertainment. I have now remidied this great attrocity. A long explanation of this tape is not for me to give (which is exactly what Matt is for), but I will reveal that the tape consists entirely of songs by and about wrestler "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan. The tape is certainly worth any effort you may need to go through to track it down, though I found dozens of copies proudly displayed in the local dollar store. For the complete lyrics of the tape, click my name or go to http://www.angelfire.com/ny/lowbrow/lyrics.html

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 09/26/2004 01:40 AM EST

I just read through my post and thought it seemed like it might possibly confusing even without the misspellings and left out words. It's late and I haven't really slept in weeks - maybe months. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that although I'm sorry for any confusion regarding the above post, there should be no confusion regarding your need for Hulk's tape. Yes, "your need." YOU. You need it. Read the lyrics; buy the tape. I must now depart in attempt to battle insomnia once more.

Lucky is the man.

He can sell any holiday with ease.

I await Kwanza Lucky Charms and the sure fire Labor Day Lucky Charms with no white marshmellows.

Chestnuts roasted by Adam @ 09/26/2004 02:07 AM EST

150 calories is high? Since when?

Chestnuts roasted by Psuedo Bohemian @ 09/26/2004 03:24 AM EST

Big G offered Lucky a yacht...with horns?

Where'd they get one of those? Do they have a distributor who happens to be a Viking?

(in other news, Choc, Frank, and Boo have all been sighted at Target Greatland in Reno, where my illustrious roommate whose X-E handle is a mystery to me works)

Chestnuts roasted by MonsterDog @ 09/26/2004 04:01 AM EST

Nice article as usual Matt keep the good work, by the way anybody knows if you can still buy the monster cereals directly from the general mills page?

Chestnuts roasted by Shinefra @ 09/26/2004 04:22 AM EST

Is that a trick or treat bag lucky is holding? If I were lucky I wouldn't be too happy about getting my own cereal for trick or treat. If I were Lucky and got corn pops, that'd be different.

Chestnuts roasted by Andrew the Stroud @ 09/26/2004 09:58 AM EST

With all this halloween madness, where are the Spooky Orange and Black Ramen Noodles and Enchanted Gehraldi Chocolates with orange goo in the center?
Damn, those people are slow.

Chestnuts roasted by AngeFaitore @ 09/26/2004 10:53 AM EST

That should be "Et tu..."

Also, Halloween was, originally, a Catholic holiday. And, it comes from the Irish holiday Samhain. So, Lucky celebrating Halloween isn't strange at all...

Chestnuts roasted by TheCurse @ 09/26/2004 12:00 PM EST

Split, split, split those hairs...

Hey, ralph, there are chocolate bat peeps at the Dollr Tree stores (if you have on in your vicinity). I think you get three for a buck. Not bad.

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 09/26/2004 01:12 PM EST

There were aArbor Day Lucky Charms once. They were the same old cereal, but with green tree-shaped marshmallows thrown in.

Matt, I'd give you the finger if you DIDN'T let me be the Wolf Man.

Chestnuts roasted by BuchanManX @ 09/26/2004 10:44 PM EST

The bats and ghosts are fugitive marshmallows from the Chocula/Frankenberry cereals.

Chestnuts roasted by Luap @ 09/27/2004 12:50 AM EST

Ah, it was a bat mask. When I first saw it at Target last month, I thought it was a burglar mask, and that there was a chance the Cookie Crook would file a lawsuit.

Chestnuts roasted by Dude McGuy @ 09/27/2004 02:15 PM EST

I just got some Frankenberry, on the side of the box there's an order form for a t-shirt, and one for a bobble-head. Woo.

Chestnuts roasted by marioshoku @ 09/27/2004 03:24 PM EST

I admit, the correction of his Latin may have been a bit much, but I am learning the language and that really bothered me. I believe the Samhain information was a relevant critique, however.

I think the expression on Lucky's face is the most frightening aspect of the cereal box...
