09/12/2004 Entry: "Spooky."

Still tweaking up the Halloween stuff -- it looks marvelously Satanic. Figure on a midweek launch. To tide you over, there's a picture of Herman Munster shaking hands with Gomez Addams available to all who click "more."

That should've be an apostrophe at the end of Step 3. Damn.

YES!!!!

I used to make ghosts out of lolly pops the same way.

That's not the first time I've been suckered into arts and crafts with the promise of Munster's pics (Don't ask)

I think it would be more fun to find a lollipop inside rather than a wadded up napkin.

what's sad is that i noticed the apostrophe thing too.

It seems almost inappropriate to make ghosts out of flowery paper towels, don't you think?

The ghost will last longer if you coat it in starch. I have one that I made in 1994 and it's still good. My mom still hangs it up.

Also remember to not use this as a weapon agaist real ghosts, they don't like it and it really buggers them.

Hhhheeeeeeeeyyyyy! You promised a pic of Herman Munster shaking hands with Gomez Adams. You're a big fat liar-head!

MATT'S A BIG FAT LIAR-HEAD!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/13/2004 12:53 AM EST

Okay, so Matt isn't really a big fat liar head. I already knew he was joking.

Cool tissue ghost, but I prefer it wrapped over a Tootsie Pop.

I'm super stoked for the Halloween stuff this year. I'm going to be visiting one of your (Matt) favorite spots for the first time next month... Atlantic City! Maybe I can find that "worst game room ever" and cause some carnage. Later!

Y'know, now that I look at it more closely, I can faintly see the flowers on the ghost. That ghost is flowery tart!

heh, those be some silly ghosts...of course that brings back memories of our halloween parties we used to have in elementary school.
Well I don't have much to say really. I've playing a lot of rad racer lately. That game is fuckin wicked!!!!

Aww! I used to make those all the time, but out of Kleenex... they were more fragile and the marker always bled, but they were "floatier."

I remember I made about 100 of them when I was little, and taped them to my bedroom ceiling. smile Ha!

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 09/13/2004 02:24 AM EST

Crummy ghosts....yep, every kid had to make one. I think I actually made one that scared me, somehow. I made it, drew a really ugly toothy face on it, took it home, it fell under the bed, and two months later I reached under and pulled it out. It was a bad face; somehow it actually did scare me.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 09/13/2004 03:32 AM EST

I think that the stores are a little too eger for Halloween to come and go and get right into the Christmas season this year. There must be some big cache of Yu-GI-OH! stuff waiting to get on the shelves for the yuletide season, so right now they want to rush and sell as many Yami Yugi costumes as they can smile.
I'm supposing that Yugi is at the peak that Pokemon was in the Christmas 1999 season right now, because of the movie. Every kid who doesn't have a set of the sacred cards will get a set this season, in January never trade the things, buy a few more for themselves and then become uninterested.

I wonder how many nerds will be begging family members to buy that eighty-dollar Sliders DVD set... and how many won't be getting it because a non-reality challanged person would only spend that much on a Star Trek set.
That's what VHS tapes and the Sci-Fi Channel are for, because the show will NEVER stop showing on there!

Aren't cha supposed to wrap the tissue around a blow-pop or a tootsie-pop? Blow pops are scarier, but tootsie-pops are tastier. Boo!

Rad Racer is such a great game. The greatest race game ever, with the coolest music.

Chestnuts roasted by JeremyMac @ 09/13/2004 12:29 PM EST

I have a ghost I made by using white garbage bags, a shrink-wrap heat cutter, and a floor fan. Basically, I used the cutter/sealer to construct a passible spook and keeping openings in his arms and on top if his head. then I taped him to the fan (around one called the wind machine) pointing the fan up. The fan keeps him inflated, and adjusted right, he flops around a bit. Put a blinking light underneath, and watch kids go nuts. "Momma! I want one of those next year!" Or, draw a face on the back of a styrofoam plate, staple it along the bottom of a white kitchen trash bag, maybe trim the open end for effect, and you got a ghost to hang up on your porch or, in a tree. Man, I love Hallowe'en!

Herman Munster shaking hands with Gomez Addams is an euphemism.

Chestnuts roasted by dfgdfg @ 09/13/2004 12:41 PM EST

It's definitely crueler to use snotty tissue than a lollipop...just think of the kids eager to open it and get their candy, and all they get is a tissue covered in green snot. Hell, I might do that this year...oh wait, I live in a dorm, no kids come here. Dammit. I was ready to break out the quarters and get goo out of a vending machine for added effect. Stupid college. Stupid hurricane Ivan threatening to come here.

Chestnuts roasted by Mara @ 09/13/2004 12:57 PM EST

Mara-I think you have a good idea there. However, I live in a dorm as well and will not be able to it either. But still, I am entertained at the thought of some kid opening up the tissue, expecting a lollipop of some sort, only to find what appears to be a wad of human snot.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/13/2004 01:24 PM EST

Okay, fellow x-e readers, I hope someone catches this and can help me out. My co-worker claims that there was a 80s cartoon with 5 guys dressed as birds... the lead guy wore a white costume and threw a bird/dart thing. It's not Silverhawks, and I have no idea what this poor kid is talking about. Lend a brother a hand if you have any clue what i'm talking about.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt (I think i'm the third) @ 09/13/2004 01:55 PM EST

White tissue paper makes some huge floatie ghosts. Also, you could probabky use white grocery store bags.

I made those stick ghosties last year. Take 4-5 dowels and stick 'em the ground in a circle. Jam a styrofoam ball on top of each dowel. Then, drape a sheet over the balls. Cut a hole in the middle, or use two sheets, one for each side of the circle. Then, tie a string in between the "heads" where the sheet droops, to make it look like they're standing in a circle, holding hands. The Dollar Tree by my house has light-up cauldrons that will look spooky in the middle of my ghost circle this year.

Walking home from school today, I saw the coolest little gadget in one of those kiosks in the mall.

It was a plastic N64 looking controller but it had A/V wires sticking out of it and an AC adapter; Upon further inspection I realised that the proprietor of the kiosk was playing Super Mario Bros. 1, no system, just a "controller"!

When I asked him about it he reset the "controller" and to my delight it had 76,000 (yes seventy-six THOUSAND)games listed in a menu a'la those 31-in-1 or 101-in-1 bootleg carts you used to be able to buy at Flea-markets. It also included a cheap as shit light gun and a second controller which looked Sega Genesis-ish that aparently plugs into the main unit, all selling for $50!

(No I didn't buy one, I'm a broke ass Comp Science student.)

Also, where the rumble pack belonged was a battery pack, no batteries though. Shucks!

I'll see if I can get pics tomorrow...

Now on topic, What is with all the different fonts Matt? I'm sorry but I had to be the one to ask.

OK...the age old question.....

Munsters or Addams Family, and why?

For myself......while I think Al Lewis and Fred Gwinn had great chemistry and the idea of a Catskills comedian Dracula is oddly amusing, I have to say I prefer Addams Family. I love the semi-literate (for a sitcom anyway) wordplay used in Addams Family scripts, and John Astin's delivery which reminds me of Groucho Marx.

Hey Matt, I found something you might be intrested in for the Halloween countdown. I found a little figurine that's part of some monster themed game. But it has a gimmick, it's sorta like if you combined a "Homie" figure with a skeleton. Producing a... yup, you guessed it, "Skelehomie". I have no idea what the games about but there were 2 other figures, 1 was a slimey monster the other was some sorta bug/beast looking guy. Skelehomie was the only intresting one though. Found it for 2 bucks at the local Gamestop, I didn't buy it though, I gots no use for a Skelehomie.

Skeletons -

"You mean the Golden Girls?"

Mwahahahaaaaaa, Heeeheeeheeee, whooohooohoooo! Hic! heeheeheee.

Mmmmm, Halloween. Pointless ancient British demon-placating ritual, turned into fun plastic-fantastic modern American demon-placating ritual. Wow.

Here's fun idea: hang long strands of thin black sewing-cotton from ceiling all along hallway btw party and the toilets... screams guranteed, especially if hallway is dark. Spider-webs, y'see. If you want screams of sticky anger, tie little knots along lengths of cotton strands, and dab each knot with some honey. Guaranteed to make people angry, sticky and yelling for more. More death, possibly yours, as hired Cleopatra/Redhornydevil costumes must be drycleaned now...

Great fun had by all. Could make little cardboard round ball filled with cheap hard candies to make ghost... rattling is nice scary touch, also can be used as pacifier.

Hey, maybe it'll snow early this year so I can make snow ghosts...

I'm too lazy to do this, I buy the little plastic bags at the dollar store, they have ghosts and pumpkins, all printed with faces, and I stuff them with newspaper. Trust me, the stuff inside is scarier than the outside.

Ever fill a latex glove with water? When I lived in Philly we did this every year, we'd make dozens of them and hang them on the porch. Not much trick to it, just get a box of latex doctor's gloves and fill em with room-temp water, tie the "wrists" like balloon ends and string em up. Great ghoulish bloated-corpse feeling walking through a forest of them. The ghosts are cool too though, don't get me wrong.

mars, cyanide, et al; put these phrases into you fave search engine: NES clones, Famiclones, portable NES. Some of the games are actually ROM hacks of games already on the things. The 64-lookin' doo-hickey is a bootleg Famicom "on a chip", that is what the slot on the bottom is for, Famicom carts. So if you have one, go to you local import game store and go nuts! I have a 3-in-one game that looks like a DDR pad, it has a dance game, Nintendo Pinball (with all refs to N removed), and Tengen's version of Tetris (with Tengen refs removed). But you have to play the last two by stomping on the dance pad. Four AA batteries, plug up the AV cables, and go!

Hmm... what's the difference between western kiddy arts-and-craft "ghosts" made out of Kleenex and Japanese teruterubozu rain-repelling charms, really? (You can see a better explanation of teruterubozu in the classic Urusei Yatsura episode "A Beautiful Girl Comes With the Rain" (episode 30), and, to use a slightly less obscure anime example, teruterubozu are the things you see bouncing around happily while the "cabbit" Ryo-Ohki patiently waits for her carrot to grow during the few seconds that it's raining in the original ending credits sequence for Tenchi Muyo!.)

Matt (I think I'm the third): I concur that it's probably Battle of the Planets, the heavily-Americanized-with-toned-down-violence version of the Japanese anime series Ninja Science Team GATCHAMAN, which I recently wrote about when writing about my childhood.

Now I'm just posting for no reason other than the fact that I felt like posting. Matt's putting up the Halloween stuff tomorrow, and I happen to have no classers tomorrow. Hmmm...well...I guess I'll just hit the gym (and yes, I do actually work out).

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/17/2004 12:31 AM EST

I'm sooo ready for Halloween. big grin

I was at Target today and picked up some decorations, including a spiderweb candle holder, and a wrought iron looking basket with witches, moons, bats, and stuff on it. Pretty cool.

Anyhow, speaking of Target, and being slightly off topic, I inadvertantly walked down the Spiderman toy ailse, and as I look to my left, there they were -

Spidey Wall Crawlers.

$5.98 FOR ONE! What the?! I was about to go hunt down someone and ask why they weren't 2 bucks, like Matt's were! But, I didn't. I just scoffed, and after looking at the only 2 they had (they had the evil guy from the new movie - he was neon green) I moved on.

Maybe one day I'll find them stuck in a clearance bin somewhere for 2 bucks. smile Hopefully they'll still be gooey.

Nice to hear that the Ghostbusters Halloween Special is getting a nod this year. I knew Matt wouldn't let me down! smile

OK, I admit it. I just have control issues.

It says Tonka on the bottom, but no year. I've had for +10. Scares the hell out of my cat, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Goolump @ 09/17/2004 01:41 PM EST

Woo. Just finished reading about a odd clown-related incident on Fark. I'm not scared of clowns, but seeing a couple hundred Ronald McDonald dolls lined up on a rural road late at night might just do it for me. Matt's We'en stuff can't start too soon for me. "I do believe in spooks, I do believe in spooks, I do, I do, I do...."

Sounds cool anyway.

Yeah, looks like something out of Rock Lords' Rock Narlies to me. A good big one. smile

I spend 3 days in a gym full of people waiting for hurricane Ivan to hit (which it didn't, it missed us) and nothing has changed here? Wow.

Holy hell, thanks Matt!

Apparently I own the King of Evil Narlies.

Man I can't believe I went for so long before discovering this site...it's like the mecca for all things I think are cool.

Looking forward to the spookiness with great gusto.

My mom lived down the street from Gwynne as a kid. Really. At least that's what she always told me. According to IMDB, though, he "lived a quiet life in suburban Bedford, New York, and...in a renovated farmhouse in rural Taneytown, Maryland" which seems to invalidate Mom's tale. Somebody has some explaining to do.

It's 8:40 PST and still no spooky, but the anticipation is sweet. I have the feeling I won't be the only one hanging in the blog all evening.

Chestnuts roasted by ME @ 09/18/2004 12:12 AM EST

GAH! Why are they bringing back the Chipmunks? Leave them in the 20th centuary. Jesus, are corperations that desperate for money?

Chestnuts roasted by Psuedo Bohemian @ 09/18/2004 12:24 AM EST

You know what I just saw at work (I work at TRU) tonight that made me shake my head with utter disdain?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00026FX6S/qid=1095484930/sr=1-22/ref=sr_1_22/002-3382118-6500028?v=glance&s=toys

(Sorry if that doesn't show up as a link, I'm not sure if this thing works on html or codes, and I'm too lazy to find out. razz)

But, yeah ...just look at that. I mean, yeah, it's good to get kids excersizing, if this would even *do* that, but the most disturbing part of it is that it sings "Let's get Physical" ... Yeah, that old song (who sang that? Olivia Newton John?) talking about sex, with the half naked men in the video. What the hell?! I wanted to take them off the shelf...

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 09/18/2004 01:32 AM EST

Well now I have to stay up razz

And just like that, the high I get from Halloween-y anticipation comes crashng down. From ME's link: Much like what Fox recently did with "Garfield: The Movie," the role of Dave Seville, the Chipmunks' adoptive father, will be live-action, whilst the Chipmunks - Alvin, Simon and Theodore - are to be computer-animated.

More chilling words have never been written. Seems somehow fitting, given the season.

Chestnuts roasted by Chilipeppers @ 09/18/2004 04:20 AM EST

Hmmm. There's late, and then there's late. Besides, I think Chilipeppers is going to beat me when it comes to the 'oooh ooooh, it's up!' post, so I guess I'll retire from the update watching and get some sleep. Maybe if I had a specific T-Minus...

Isn't it like, morning over there by now? I hope you didn't lose your beauty sleep just for little old us.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 09/18/2004 04:57 AM EST

Well a buddy popped on Aim, so I maintained the vigil for as long as I could, but it's blatantly Not Friday Night Anymore and X-Entertainment still isn't spooky yet. I'm throwing in the towel. Update Watcher out. Holla.

Im excited now with the little Super Mario Bros. ghosts!!!

Chestnuts roasted by pulseczar @ 09/18/2004 06:12 AM EST

I'm not still up because I'm waiting for the update. I'm still up because I cannot sleep. And no, it is not sleep lost over the new update. It is sleep lost over a girl whom I've just met today. In terms of physique and personality, she's virtually perfect. The problem? A dormie of mine got to her first, and she seems to be reciprocating. I also kinda like her roommate, but she's too damn shy, and so am I.

Anyway, maybe the new Halloween stuff will brighten my spirits, and perhaps even help me in some sort of odd way. I admit, this site can be quite therapeutic. Thank you, Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/18/2004 07:02 AM EST

By the way, I was somewhat drunk tonight (or should I say "last night"wink when I met these girls, so you'd expect that I would've crashed by now. Apparently, that's not the case.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/18/2004 07:05 AM EST

It's Saturday afternoon! Central African Time! That means ::mutters careful calculations:: some time in the morning EST! What happened to Matt? Swallowed by the Gnarlyball? [ ::yells in background:: Oy! Kingklash! Get your gnarlyball Matt-extractor out pronto! ] razz big grin

Chiiiiia!

I agree: rows of Ronald McDonald clown dolls along rural road bloody creepy. Must think up some sort of S'affriccen counterpart. Mmm, squashed hamburglars, perhaps?

Now I wanna travel to US just to see big Halloween weird and get chocolate... Although I hear that American chocolate not very nice... more easy to class as cheese - or maybe 'tile grout', so will stay in S.A. and try to get job in Nestle factory, although Cadbury soooo much better. If you work for chocolate factory, you can eat as much as you like on the floor, but you can't take any home. Bummer. Nothing beats a Marsbar, though. ::drools::

Dammit, now i'm craving.

Spooky? Spooookyyyyyyyy???!

Chestnuts roasted by Toshiro @ 09/18/2004 09:10 AM EST

poor Nate.

You want my advice?

good, you're getting it anyways. I say f the stupid twit. You don't need the girls. All you need is a nintendo, a beer, and the love of a good webpage. All of which may be found at x-e.

Spooky, however, is still AWOL...

Chestnuts roasted by Whirred @ 09/18/2004 09:48 AM EST

Well, the trapper keeper changed to pumpkins while I was reading the Blog, so I'm guessing the design is slowly being put up right now.

^ChesterCopperpot, you must be a Goonies fan. Me too razz

^Nate, I know how you feel. I'm involved with a girl right now, and she's got me all crazy insisde. Alot of nights I can't sleep because I can't stop thinking about her big grin

Chestnuts roasted by Chilipeppers @ 09/18/2004 12:13 PM EST

eminentfreakthemighty!: You could always travel to Canada for Hallowe'en; it's pretty much like the United States, but with much better chocolate: Aero! Coffee Crisp! Crispy Crunch! Smarties (the British kind)! Orange Aero! (Actually, I've never seen the small "fun size" versions, the size of chocolate bar most non-rich people give to kids, of Orange Aero sold outside of Britain, just the normal-size bars.)

If Casper is the ghost of Richie Rich, Spooky must be the ghost of Richie's cousin, Reggie Van Dough.

Chestnuts roasted by Steve Brandon @ 09/18/2004 02:11 PM EST

Know what I think? This update, aside from the stickers, is a ghost update. It's up, but it's invisible! Now, what I want is a FPS-style GhostBusters game. With upgrades for the Proton Packs, ability to get stronger Traps, and sending Slimer out to scout and/or decoy various spooks. Even unlockable Extreme GB characters plus Louis and Janine. Imagine a 3D modelled Boogyman! Ecto-1 driving mode! Why no-one put one out yet, is a mystery.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash treed by a Terror Dog @ 09/18/2004 02:37 PM EST

Whirred-I can't just forget about her. And thingsd like beer and X-E and other cool stuff can't replace the need for belonging in someone's life, and that person belonging in yours. However, that's not to say that I don't still look forward to the Halloween motif, which is in fact still AWOL

Chilpeppers-Thak you for understanding.

Steve Brandon-Canada does have SOME better stuff (and not just Halloween stuff, for the beer is far better here too). However, I must say that our M&Ms, outdo your smarties.

For those of you who don't know, Smarties are not those chalky little tablets as we know them to be in the US (they're called "Rockets" in Canada). Instead, Smarties are more or less like that of M&Ms. They're chocolate coated with thin hardened sugar and dye, but the chocalte is a bit nastier than M&Ms. I must also say that I like our version of "Smarties" better.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that the US is superior in any way. This is justg an honest and silly opinion about candy. So don't take me personally, Steve. Besides, there are plenty of things that I like better about Canada.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 09/18/2004 03:21 PM EST

Mmmmm. Smarties rule, oreo's taste like cocoa-milkpowder flavoured cardboard. Yuck.

Canadians are just a leetle bit sooper-silly-ous, don't you find? Overheard a conversation t'other day - how patronising can one bunch of people be?

If you haven't tasted Cadbury's flake, you have - not - lived!!!!
