If memory serves, "Burger Buddies." If memory serves, I ate them as a child and got violently ill.

Yea, I had that before a Mardi Gras parade one year....and since I live in Louisiana I proceeded to make sex with my cousins after.

Good luck on your new job, Matt. Great article, as always, but what's with the astroturf background? Am I missing something? (Probably.

Kudos on the Elecman appearences, too, since I just got Mega Man Anniversary Collection a week ago (yeah, it kicks ass!).
Man, an article with two McD's ads, and I don't even mention...uh, I won't go there.

I love Mc Ribs. I hoard them when they are on sale. To me a Mc Rib tastes like one of those rib tv dinner patties and put it in a bun. I remember that old gremlins 2 ad with the puppet.

I had one hell of a 4th. My family all live near Indiana, the ass end of the American backbone. Fireworks of all kinds are legal there, and four guys (uncles, cousins, + my dad) all bought about $400 worth of the ka-boom stuff each. Our display lasted for two hours. My ears are ringing, I'm covered in black, charred crap, and I'm coughing up stuff that tastes like gunpowder, but it was great.
One of the 15 pound big ones my dad got was called Megatron 2. I got a kick out of the name. It had a label that said something like "For the Maxaminum ejoymant, face this side towareds specators". What it did was shoot about 300 golden, flaming, exploding rockets about 30 feet above my entire family's head. In the true spirit of Megatron, it was trying to kill my family.
I have a video me me being chased by about 50 bottle rockets I'm going to post on my site when I get back home tomorrow night.

Cool, I was just hoping for some new 80's ads. Where did those trees go anyway? And what did they have to be jolly about?
Not to toot my own horn, but I just completed a page for my site on "Garfield and Friends" that's packing more information than anywhere else. And I took all the screenshots, made all the videos and gathered all the info myself. If you miss "Screaming with Binky" or want to know the truth behind "the Klopman Diamond," follow my name's link....

Finally, the Bitner Holiday Special will see the light of day! Nickelodeon is the perfect place to start your dominance over television.
See if after a while you can work you way into their vaults and review their older shows.

HOLY CRUD THE STARBOTS!
I used to have so many of those things. Brings back memories of orange juice flavored cereal conveniently enough called "OJ's." I mean Jesus immagine if those things came out now. Anyway, OJs had those things in em way after every other cereal had dropped the promotion, so I just racked up my robots that looked like vaccume cleaners with pitchforks attached to them.

Everytime I try to write a post, it sounds stupid, especially when I'm trying to make it Nick-related
I even dropped a ref to the Archie Comics version of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' because one of the artists works for Nick now. Personally, it's probibly better that they are, that comic hasn't been wonderful lately.
Anyway... so, you're workin' for Cosmo, Wanda and Spongebob now, eh?

I'm a sad, sad, man. As soon as that Fry Guys commercial started I recited the whole song. Right down to the part where Ronald bellows, "Rock Rock Rock Rock," at the end. When I was young, I taped EVERY Disney Sunday Movie (still have them in fact), and watched them over and over, including the commercials. The McDonlads commercials were always my favorite. As a 4 or 5 year old kid I LOVED that song. What a memory.

Great commercials. I remember the McRib. In the 90's they would bring that thing back out with a movie promotion. They did it for the flintsones and a couple of other films. Those were the days. Back then, when a movie came out, you could always get a supersize tie-in meal, with a mcRib, and an overpriced plastic cup with images from the movie on it.

Nickelodeon, cool! Even if nothing comes of it, it'll still look great on your resume.
Make sure you sneak your camera into the studio for some behind the scenes stuff. Then post the pictures but mistitle them, so there will be no Nickelodeon Mafia banging on your door.
Does Ronald say something about stolen fries in that song? What the heck is he saying there?
Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 07/05/2004 10:56 AM EST
Back when, the "fry Guys" were called "goblins" and their gimmick was finding and gobbling up any and all McD's fries they could find. As time went on, they devolved into fry theives and then to "guys" and finally "kids." I miss the pirate captain.

Actually, 1990 IS part of the 80's... since the first decade AD had 10 years, it ran from 1 to 10. Therefore the 80's started in 1981 and ran until 1990.
That's why the REAL millenium was in 2001, not 2000.

Matt Head to the tape archives on the 5th floor (where it's earilly empty) and start grabbing tapes of You Can't Do that on television. Then accidently go up 1 floor to VH1 and accidently slip them into the editing room. Maybe they'll get some better Ideas than the crud they've been having lately. Oh and go to the 9th Floor and yell at the old guy who does reception for Sundance... That guy screamed on me once because I had a to get a tape from them, and I didn't have the name of the person I was suposed to get it from, just the office number.

I remember Nickelodeon during the 80's and early 90's. I grew up watching Pinwheel, special delivery, Today's Special and a bunch of other live action shows. I also remember the great gameshows like Double Dare, Nick Arcade, Legend of The Hidden Temple, GUTS, and a bunch of others.
Now I see it today and it's all nicktoons now. I remember when that was a special thing for the weekends, Rugrats, Doug, and Ren and Stimpy, but now they're all over the place. It's such a shame there's no variety anymore.
Anyway, congrats on the job Matt. I hope all goes well with it.

www.imdb.com/title/tt0092696/
Trippy, you and Matt should plan the best way to get tapes out for copying. That is one of the things I like so much about Adult Swim is, starting with Space Ghost, they have given a second life to all of those characters that might not even be seen much on the Boomerang network. It would be great if eventually they let Matt program Saturday or Sunday mornings and he would have his pick of old shows.
Matt, I realize it is way too early in your new job, but please pass along the name of former "Beetlejuice" cartoon animator, Greg Hyland (I mentioned him before for an X-E book's illustrations), sometime in the near future to your new boss(es) for at least promos: www.lethargiclad.com www.fbtb.net/greg/gregindex.asp
He would also be perfect for helping to adapt a certain website for a kid audience.

Congrats on the new job! Finally we have another reason to watch Nickelodeon. I had stopped after they pulled the Old School Pick with no explanation. Do us a favor and ask them what the hell they were thinking.
Those old shows need to be on the air, maybe a Saturday night block dedicated to nothing but old Nickelodeon. Bring back Inside Out Boy too.

I also had a surprisingly fun Fourth, considering I spent most of it working. I literally ran home after work, changed, and ran the two blocks to the Boardwalk, where I found out the fireworks weren't for another hour and a half. I spent that hour buying an overpriced-but-worth-it root beer float and winning a Tenderheart Bear in the cranes near the Great White at Wild Wheels. Tenderheart dolls are rarer than dinosaurs on the boards - usually, you get Love-a-Lot or Share Bear - and I was thrilled to win him, especially since he was larger than average for a crane toy, too. We watched the truly spectactular fireworks together, than left during the finale to beat the crowds home and spent the rest of the night and early morning goofing around with a friend online. : 0 )
I only remember three of those commercials well, the most vivid being the Sunkist Fruit Snacks one. Who could forget that crazy shaking tree?

RewolfJ, remember X-E is like a virus, vampire or a Jehovah's Witness (No offense meant towards JW X-E readers, but please stop ringing my bell). Nick let Matt in and from this point on it is only a matter of time before he is in charge of Viacom itself. At that point he can trun VH1 Smooth (Their Jazz channel. Geez, Gremlins 2 predicted a lot) into the X-E Channel (It is easier to aquire a cable channel that already exists and change it than to start one from scratch; see TNN/Spike).

Though they still have the home version of DD2000 out, I may pick it up to see if it's as fun as they try to make it look.

God I remember seeing The Wizard. What a cheezy movie. I was, like, 11 when I saw it and even then I thought "Damn, I could beat all these guys up." Also, the power glove looks like something that came out of Robocop's body shop. Except it's not holding that cool automatic pistol thing. Yeah, if the power glove came with an optional light gun that looked like Robocop's pistol, I'd give it extra points. Lots of extra points. Wait, did that gun that worked with Duckhunt come before or after the power glove?

That Turbo Teen cartoon freaked me out when I was little...anyway, congrats on getting a job at Nick, Matt! Maybe you can suggest they make a Nickelodeon Classic channel with all the classic shows from the 80s and early 90s (like that would ever happen). Cool commercials! One I'd like to see that I haven't in a while is that anti-drug PSA where the kid says to his dad: "I learned it by watching YOU!!"

Or was it McRiiiiiibChomp...?
Funny commercials. Nasty sandwiches.

Never say never; "retro" is very in right now (visitors to this site should be VERY aware of this) and a channel dedicated to classic Nick shows would be a nice fit for the rest of Viacom's digital cable networks ... Anyway, let me add my belated congrats on the new job Matt!

Hey Matt, have you ever heard of Rap Snacks? I just saw some of these strange things at 7-11 today. They all have famous and not-so-famous rappers on the wrappers (!) and a bunch of weird flavors. I think I saw Lil' Romeo on a BBQ pop-corn bag. Anyway, I think they'd be worthy of immortalization in X-E before they disappear forever. They have a website at http://www.rapsnacks.com
P. S. Congrats on the Nick job.

Ah.. I would like to humbly request the Bubble-Eez bubble gum commercial if you can find it.

Congrats, Matt. I hope the Nick job turns into something long term for you. And if you happen to run into a tape of that old show Dave Coulier did (Out of Control, was it?) by all means do a review of that.
Most of those commercials are vaguely familiar. The Halls one I definitely remember though! I always thought it would be the coolest thing to have walls made of giant Halls lozenges. Yeah, I was a weird, odd child pretty much. I usually saw the ad during the Price is Right, which makes sense since it was targeting an older demographic.
The McDonald's ad for some reason got me to thinking about a gimmick they used to do with the Happy Meals. Anyone else remember when the HM containers were plastic toys shaped like vehicles? One was a boat, one was a UFO, one was a train, etc. Each one came with stickers you could use to decorate the vehicle. I feel sorry for kids today, having to settle for HM in boring paper bags.

Fuck yeah, Out of Control ruled!! That's really where the cut, it, out thing came from. Crazy Diz and her squeal laugh, and Hern Berford, I think he was like the producer type guy. I liked the Hurry Up segment, and the How Not To skits. My fave was the How Not to Eat Spaghetti, it looked so damn messy I used to laugh my ass off at that show. by all means, find that tape(s) and bring them to us, we beg of you!!

I'm so happy for you, congrats and good luck on the new job. I'm stumped for anything meaningful to say since everyone's already been so effusive, but I will co-opt your success for myself. Ever since I found X-E you've been a big inspiration to me. I've always wanted to write and make a career out of it (God willing), but it wasn't until I read X-E that I knew that I could write about what was important to me, even if somebody else might consider it silly or irrelevant. X-E's success has been such an encouragement to me, just knowing that someone out there is leading a successful life writing about what they love has allowed me to keep the faith that it might be possible, someday, for me, too. (I had meant to post these sentiments awhile ago, but you never posted a 'Happy Anniversary X-E' article.) With every new success you achieve, I steal a little bit for myself and keep it, to remind myself, "Hey, Matt's out there doing it and he's winning, maybe you can too." So congrats again on the job, and thanks for just doing what you do.

Matt congratulations. Thought you might want to know this though, went to a comic book convention with a friend a few weeks back and a guy was selling '80's commercials DVD's.....guess what? They all got cribbed from your site. I know this because of the "brought to you by X-E" stamp at the begining of each commercial. The guy is selling a Vol.1 and Vol.2 for 20.00 a pop or both for 30.00. After the con my buddy and I went back to my Apt. to look through our bootlegs and put the Commercials in and I was quite shocked. Thought I'd give you a heads up. Congrats on the job again.

New jobs are great, but neat new jobs are even greater! Congrats Matt, I have no doubts you'll kick ass there and show them they'd be fools to let you go.
How do you get your commercials on digital format? I have a whole bunch of tapes of original Star Trek TNG episodes on BETA - and yes I do have the player for them too. The quality is not great, these tapes are so old, but all the original commercials are there. Mind you, these were broadcasted from Vermont for a Montreal audience, so some commercials are very local in nature.

ya know the chia plot has taken the place of the 2002 advent calender (still waiting to find out about mare winningham) as the biggest cliffhanger in x-e. I think it would be very funny to do a "where are they now" look at some of those cliff hangers. Just short blurbs about the ending to the advent calender, and what you did with the toys afterwards (you'd make big bucks selling x-e reviewed items on ebay). you could tell us about the thing you did that one time, or what you've done with the hulk-hands since, or even the fate of some of the items purchased at American Science and Surplus. common I need some nestalga of my nestalga site!

The only way to become cooler than you have become you must do one of three things:
1.Interview a creator of one Nickelodeon's animated shows.
2.Interview the voice of Spongebob Squarepants.
3.Subliminally persuade Bitner to publicly post on the blog again.

Keep your eyes on your fries
They're hard to resist
Keep your eyes on your fries
Or they'll disappear like this
At McDonald's, french fries are fun
Naturally, "Keep Your Eyes On Your Fries" became the game during family trips to McD's.

Oh, say, like "Saved by the Bell", my official junior high/high school obsession from 1988 to 1993? I even watched "SbtB: The College Years" religiously on Tuesday nights during the 1993-94 TV season just because I wanted to BE Zack.
Needless to say, at 27 (and off drugs) I'm not half as dorky as I was at 16.
