Either they didn't sell pudding pops here, or my parents never bought them. My mom had a Tupperware thing that could make 6 pops of whatever flavour you poured into the moulds. Most often it weas pudding or regular fruit jello's mixed with kool-aid powder. I ate many during the summer months of my childhood, and the chewed-up rings of they key-like sticks are proof.

The freezer burn ice coating that we loved so much is not freezer burn at all but done at the factory. To prvent the "pops" from losing their shape they are quickly dipped in water before packaging.

Chestnuts roasted by Ghalidrim @ 06/19/2004 08:17 PM EST
That's one of the things I love about working in a grocery store. A customer about my age (25) or a little older brought up a package of these, and I'm like "Are those Pudding Pops?" and she says "Yeah! I haven't seen these in years!" and I'm "It's a little piece of my childhood back!"
It wasn't a summer evening in the mid-late 80s if we didn't get to sit out on the back porch, under the big willow tree or on the rickety steel swing set, slurping Pudding Pops and discussing out day at the beach, movies, TV shows, or life in general. I'm definately going to have to pick up a box.

Mr. trajeal's uncle is a pilot, and he used to fly Bill Cosby all over the country on a private jet. Supposedly, he was a pompous jerk. I don't know if I could believe that about Pudding Man. It's just TMI, ya know?
Hey, aren't Matt's initials M.A.C.? Maybe that's why he won't review Mac and Me. He was traumatized by the thought of a relation.

After reading this feature, I went on a quest to find these sacred pops. Last time I had one was in 1988 or 1989. Went to popsicle.com and aside from that site sucking, there was no information whatsoever about Pudding Pops.
So I left work and hit 5 different chain grocery stores. Nothing. Frustrated, I recalled that Popsicle bought Good Humor, so I gave that site a whirl. Sure enough, there was a store locator that showed which stores carried the Pops.
Only place in Milwaukee you can buy them is Jewel Osco - the only store I didn't check. I bought $62.65 worth of Pudding Pops. That's 17 boxes and cleared out their stock.
Just like Otter Pops aren't the same as they used to be, the new Pudding Pops aren't either. A very reasonable facsimile though. The flavors don't seem as robust, and the couple of swirl pops I had just tasted like vanilla.
BUT... It was frozen Jello pudding on a stick, and I didn't have to toil to try to reproduce the desired effects. I long for the banana. I long for the milk chocolate. But in the meanwhile, I have 16 more boxes to go through.
Perhaps I'll put a bunch in deep cold storage and give them to x-e in 10-15 years when they pull them from the shelves again.
(oh, and trajael, they never discontinued the Whatchamacallit (sp?) candy bar. I've been buying them on a monthly basis since my youth. As with peanut butter cups, they're best frozen.)

Of course, I didn't like them as much, but that's just cuz they weren't made out of pudding.
Remember those?
If they still make them (which I doubt) it shows you how much I don't get out.

Bill most certainly is doing 'stuff' nowadays... He's on the road doing his standup, and I'm sure he's doing a buttload of guest lectures. I guess you didn't hear the contraversy he made a week or two ago by making a supposed 'racist' comment (maybe at a graduation commencement?)... towards black people. Puddin' Pop!
Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 06/22/2004 09:38 AM EST
Got me some puddin' pops yesterday. I swear I had to beg my wife Ginger to let me have them. So, I guess the whole reliving my youth thing was a complete success. I forgot that they taste even better if you have to beg someone (thanks Mom) to let you have one. I think it must be some chemical reaction caused by whining. Makes em more puddin-y . Cave bear name = Jecrisco = lame. Anybody wanna' trade. You could be cooking with Crisco!

Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 06/22/2004 09:39 AM EST
Yeah he's doing a new cartoon. They're making a Fat Albert movie(they were filming it locally last week) with the Keenan guy from Keenan and Kel that's on Saturday Night Live now, but I dunno if Cosby is involved at all.
Chestnuts roasted by Casey Jones @ 06/22/2004 09:47 AM EST
Bill also does Little Bill, a show on Nick Jr. I think it's supposed to be him as a child. It's done in the same way that they do South Park, I think. Bill makes cameo appearances as Captain Brainstorm. It's pretty cute. Felisha Rashad (Clair Huxtable) does the voice for the mom, and Gregory Hines does the voice of the dad. I love the laugh of the kid who does Little Bill. it's so real and little kid-like.

Sorry to fill the blog, but just wanted to follow up on Cosby and retract a statement I made earlier...
I incorrectly used the word 'racist'... I should have said 'racial'... and Bill Cosby made the racial comments against poor African-Americans at a recent NAACP-sponsored event honoring Brown v. Board of Education... do a little internet search on the incident... quite interesting...
The More You Know... jigglers!
Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 06/22/2004 10:56 AM EST
I think much of what Cosby said -- not just at that incident but in general lately -- has been taken out of context. He's obviously got really strong opinions and anyone with those is prone to be shit on by someone, but I don't think he's sending any incorrect messages. I think his basic point was "don't sound/act ignorant if you're not ignornat." The problem is, he's lost a bit of his humorous sublety over the years, and much of what he says comes across as indignant now. I still love the guy, though.

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 06/22/2004 01:03 PM EST
Matt, I agree with you about Cosby's statements. I don't think they were made to condemn or belittle anyone... it was more of a plea for help for a certain demographic that is in danger of imploding in on itself... a cry out against the continued ignorance and apathy, a trait being passed down, genearation to generation, in a less-than-privileged tier of society...
But, this is just the opinion of a protestant white male, age 18 to 65....

I just read this freaky statement from cartoon writer Jefferey Scott about an episode of Muppet Babies:
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Realm/4173/scott.html
"I also used one of L. Ron Hubbard's discoveries in the field of study in a Muppet Babies episode I wrote. Hubbard discovered that the number one barrier to study was the MISUNDERSTOOD WORD. He found that the moment a student went past a word he/she didn't understand the rest of the material became more or less 'blank'. If I told you to attach the creddlefur to the neuron, chances are whatever I said after that wouldn't make much sense. So in a 'Muppet Goose' episode I wrote Piggy was reading Little Miss Muffet, and when she read 'sat on a tuffet' her imagination went blank until she cleared up her misunderstood word. As a matter of fact, Hubbard's Study Technology is being used in schools around the world and is extremely effective, though still a little bit controversial (probably because it's so simple and therefore makes teachers who couldn't get their kids to learn look pretty dumb)."

As to X-E MST, there's Matt's review of Killers From Space, where he mentions Tom Servo, and there's his oldold review of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, which of course was featured on an episode of MST. "A-Wel, if it's any consolation, I'm absolutely positive that I will review the movie someday." -Matt
Finally, some recognition from Matt on this subject. That's all I've wanted for months now. Well that, and the review itself.
Living in Canada, I've never got to see MST3K.
I tried downloading some eps off Kazaa, but they were pretty choppy and unwatchable. I did see "MST3K: The Movie" though, where they watch "This Island Earth". Its a poor conselation, though, since its actually shorter than most episodes, and the jokes are fewer in between to account for laughter since it was shown theatrically. Ah well. Anybody know where I can get some episodes?
Chestnuts roasted by A-wel Cruiz @ 06/23/2004 12:01 PM EST
Hey, I watched Salem's Lot, too, kidneyboy! What did you think? I recently reread the book, so I found the huge plotholes and non-story-following parts distracting. Although, a lot was included in this version that wasn't included in the 1977 version. I can't stand Rob Lowe (he was HORRIBLE as Nick in The Stand), so that biased me a bit.
BTW, you are a deep purple brown, like the color of ripe plums.
Froxen turtle pies, king. Uck. The pastry would get all damp and soggy as it melted, and the pudding would probably freeze solid into a green lump, hurting me teeth when I tried to bite it. But, you know, to each his own. :-)
Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 06/23/2004 12:08 PM EST
I don't think "Mac and Me" really NEEDS a review. If you've ever seen it, you already know whats wrong with it. If you haven't seen the movie, it goes like this. An E.T. rip off lands on Earth and loses his family. Through the powers of love and product placement he is reunited with them. The End.
You probably should still see it because of the timeless McDonalds breakdance scene, but that's about it.

trajeal,
twas OK. nothing more, nothing less. lots of plot holes and jumps, but thats to be expected. I would have rather seen a big screen version with really gory effects and lots of swearing, but its about 20 years too late for that. when you kill a vampire, does it always shoot to the top of the room and then vanish?
Yes, Rob Lowe does leave a bit to be desired, and his line delivery is really super shitty.
on another note, in my girlfriend's grandmother's basement, i recently found a can of cherry Hi-C, and it looks aged to perfection. All the telltale rust spots and smears are in evidence. I just need to grab it the next time we go over there. I was very excited, to say the least and my g/f thought I was crazy.

Where are the damn GELATIN POPS?
Those were good too, not as good as the pudding pops, but good.
These pudding pops are not quite the same, but they are still pudding pops, I am just glad they got rid of the damn banana flavor.
I just had some banana pudding recently and it reminded me of that awful flavor of pudding pops. But if memory serves me correctly, could you not have purchased a whole box of just swirl before instead of this multi-pak business?
Also does anyone remember Campbell's Meatball (Alphabet) Soup? That was damn good. Matt please find a can of that and do a review as well as the Gelatin Pops.

I don't know if they still make them, but a few years ago we bought some dripless pops. Or, meltless pops. I don't know. They were marketed towards parents who hate messy pops. Anyway, they were gelatin pops. IIRC, they only had red, too. Did the original gelatin pops only have red?

P.S. kidneyboy, let me know when you finish the book. Is it good enough to buy hardcover, or wait until paperback?
Also, I think the movie would have been done better if they had spent more time building suspense. Matt's trek to his guest bedroom while Susan was tlaking downstairs was decent, but nothing else really had time to grow. Desperation is on the burner sometime in the future. I wonder if they'll follow w/ The Regulators. Probably not, since it would involve those huge toy cars and figures, whic would probably cost a mint to replicate or do up w/ CGI.

kidneyboy - no, you're not the color of a kidney bean. LOL Really, more like the color of ripe plum skin - that purplish brown. Kidney beans don't really have purple - aren't they more red?
Now I don't want to start reading it, since I know it will end on a cliffhanger. Did you ever download any of The Plant chapters from a few years ago? I've always wondered how that turned out.
