04/13/2004 Entry: "Jaws: The Nintendo Game."

The first guess was right, here's my review of the Jaws Nintendo game, where we battled with the world's most famous shark using spears, bombs, strobes and our own two hands. A pretty terrible game that still managed to bewitch a few people, it's hard not to appreciate an attempt to get Jaws out there in any way possible. Review includes Mrs. Sbaitso's audio version, and a lot of images aligned jusssst right.

Hey...I have this game and I always thought it was a pretty fun game. During the bomb drop side game I always thought they looked like jellyfish.

Jaws was impossible to beat. what a dick.

Collecting shells was one of the most tedious things ever, but that sweet sweet sub power-up was worth it, overall pretty easy game, just stay out of the shallow water. Too bad this game was awful or there might have been super cool Jaws video game sequels, including Jaws 3 the video game in stunning 3-D

I saw a Tiger shark once, washed up on a beach in Alameda. Poor thing. It never had a chance to play this game.

Matt, that shark has got to be the new mascott.

Yay 'intendo! As kids, my friend and I played this endlessly at his house, but we both sucked and couldn't "stab" Jaws... Then I really pissed him off by convincing him I beat the game while he was sleeping... I came clean a few weeks ago. He wasn't amused.

I could get nowhere in this game as a kid. Try it now -- if you read any manual/walkthrough, it's damn easy. Without reading anything, it's damn impossible.

Jaws was the first game I ever rented! I was only 4 or 5, so I had absolutely no idea what to do, but the fact that I remember it from 15 years ago must mean something. Look for the Jaws NES game along with Burger Time in the store where Marty McFly gets the almanac.

I remember this game now! Back in the day, I loved everything shark. Then I played this game. SO I didn't love everything shark anymore.

But for a really bad shark game, the Atari 2600 "Sea Hunt" Truly took the cake. And smashed your pixelated face into it.

I remember this game. I played it at friends houses when I was a kid. I guess we were just REALLY bored because we thought this game was the SHIZZNIT at the time. Ahh, I guess we all live and learn. This game wasn't as bad as LJN's T&C Surf and Sport. Ugh! Coolness with the Mrs. Sbaitso Matt.

I don't remember how much it cost back in the day but it was WAY more expensive than any kid deserved. (Which made it a guiltier pleasure that I'd suckered my folks into getting me one for Xmas...)

You could "program" it to pour (spill) drinks and motor around the house. Oh, it never worked nearly as well as I'd prayed it would, but what ever did...?

Matt, what possessed you to put the article through text-to-speech? Whatever it was, it was good.

While visiting my mom's friends' house, I watched her son play this game once. I was 6 and in the starting stages of my Nintendo obsession, but even then I wasn't interested. My best memory of a similar incident is watching some kid show me the end of Super Metroid, swimsuit Samus and all. I still haven't done it. :(

FYI - the makers of the power meter actually did make just the sort of error you were hoping for. The possessive of a name ending in S is still the name plus apostrophe plus S. So it should be JAWS'S power. It may look funny, but it's right.

Cheers on the great site, it's always fun to read at work.

Hey Matt,

How about reviewing the Ghostbusters NES game? I've never played the Jaws game, but I had the Ghostbusters one when I was a kid and I can't imagine any game being any worse than it was. I'm betting Ghostbusters makes Jaws look like Super Mario Bros. 3. I would love to hear your musings on it.

Wasn't there an Atari game w/ Your Diver: Episode 1? I seem to remember trying to keep from floating. There were fish involved, too. I can't, for the life of me, remember what it was called, though.

My favorite Atari game was, by far, Fast Food. Flying burgers and hot dogs, woo!

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 04/13/2004 10:40 PM EST

I haven't finsihed the article, but

a) Jason, I agree that Ghostbusters is a terrible game

b) Jaws is not that bad. I find it fun every now and then, when I have nothing to do and have played all the other 50 or so NES games I have.

c) I haven't seen Jaws: The Revenge, but I got about halfway through the book (I've read the original Peter Benchley novel, too--the wife is far more important in it than in the movie). The Book was absolutely terrible, too. Utter Tripe.

I played that game 15 years ago, so the memory's a little fuzzy.

I actually wanted (and got) Ghostbusters for NES as a kid because you could crash the Ecto-1 into other cars, and the ghost trapping was kinda cool. The thing sucked mostly because it was only a baby step above an Atari game, the ghost sprites are even clip art from some old type of computer. The worst part? The Zool building... I'm not going to get into how horrible it was because I also think Matt should review this game, and the Zool building is easily the biggest reason the game should burn in hell.... Ghost hell...

Oh yeah, I know that game all too well. My best friend's brother tried to pawn it off on me about 13 years ago. I saw it in their rack of NES games, and asked if I could play it. His exact words: "You can keep the motherfucker". They let me play it, and after about five minutes, I gave the "motherfucker" back. Never in my life have I passed on a free videogame, but JAWS was the exception. Every now and then, I'll see a copy at Gamestop, but the Bible Adventures games seems more appealing.

This game (which I've never played--for some reason I never liked Jaws, Robocop or GI Joe) (Maybe only He-Man kept me from turning gay)(I also never played it becuase my only friend who still has a working Nintendo told me that I can't play Jaws because it is stupid), reminds me almost exactly of a game I played on my Apple IIgs, I think its called Alligator Hunter or Crocodile Hunter... You are a guy that stabs alligators while swimming... No! Jungle Hunt! It's Jungle Hunt, you swing from vine to vine and Monkeys try to knock you down, and then you swim and kill alligators, and I think that at the end you rescue a princess or something. Thanks for this stroll down Amnesia Lane. (Is that a line from a movie? I know I've heard it before, but I forgot where)

Chestnuts roasted by Joe @ 04/14/2004 04:57 AM EST

PS,
does anyone remember a NES game called Pirates? It was by far my favorite game, you started out as a dipshit with a boat, and then you could become either a pirate, or you could be an independent vessel supporting a military (either English, Spanish, POrtugese, or Dutch). Plus you could go anywhere in the CArribean sea and raid cities. I only know one other person who's even heard of the game, and he's a German.

The Jaws article was a little strange...it was like something Mad Matt would have written in more than a few places. Throw in some "Huurrbh gurrrrvh" type groans and POWEE ZOWEE.

I always wanted to say that and I'll thank you not to point.

Chestnuts roasted by Niq @ 04/14/2004 06:05 AM EST

Oh yes. I remember Jaws. I played it right when I was into my Nintendo obsession, making my mom rent a game for me week after week from the local Wegmans. Back then, it didn't matter to me what other people said about any of the games. It was Nintendo, and that was all that mattered.

Jaws actually belonged to a friend of mine, who let me borrow it more than once, apparently seeing how much of a sucker I was. I played that thing constantly in the hopes of finally beating that damn shark, but it never happened. But that's what was great about games back in those days, they were so impossible to beat, so you kept playing them. I think the only game I ever beat for the NES was Life Force, using the 30 ships cheat.

Anyway, great review, and the robot voice was the icing on the cake.

Does anyone remeber the game they made of Friday the 13th for Nintendo? That game was my demise as a child. Jason would go through all my camp counselers in 10 min. or less. I had to hold back the tears of frustration everytime I played that game. Stupid Jason.

You won't be disappointed. Well the ending is a bit disappointing though. But the game kicks ass. As for Jaws, good game. But another crappy ending. Played Nightmare on Elm Street once. never beaten it. Maybe because it was another crappy game.

Just thought I'd add that while I've never played the NES "Pirates!", it sounds like a port of the very classic computer game by Sid Meier (later famous for Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, and other now-classics). I used to play it on the Commodore 64 all the time (there are good C64 emulators out there, look around) and I still think it's one of the best games ever made...

Bettie Boo: Being nearly two years since I've beaten it on a NES Emulator, I just remember it takes three times to beat Jason. First time, They show Jason fall on his ass and words scrool on the screen that Jason is alive and better than ever. Jason who has fallen on his ass looks like a hockey Golie being knocked out by a puck. The second time it's the same thing. Third time you get a peaceful eight bit picture of Camp Crystal Lake with the words gameover. Preceeding this 1/2 star ending you get a caption about Jason being killed. Whoopie! I couldn't believe the length of the game for some cheap ending. At least it could've said, "The princess is in another castle."

Great article...the worst part about the JAWS game (ok well one of the worst parts..) was the fact that in the final scene, its the BOAT you are using to make a JAWS-kabob, and the fact that by pressing the B button on the controller made the boat lunge forward made it all the more comical...I wish I had had a boad that would lunge on command...(BTW the boat from JAWS actually is an on going gag at a certain videogame site, where it constantly pops up in their "best game character" and similiar polls).

Anyways, if you want to review bad nintendo games, hit up Star Voyager, one of Acclaim's first entries into the video game frey... This game is so impossible, you cant even beat it with a Game Genie!!

Who has seen the different TV version endings of Jaws: The Revenge? The difference is Mario Van Peeble's character is either dead, or his legless, but still conscious head and torso comes floating along after the shark is BOAT-STABBED!

Interesting factoid about the actress who played Ellen. According to the E! True Hollywood Story, she got the part through her husband/Head of Universal Studios' friendship with Steven Spielberg. She still did a good job, but that bit of casting will always be a little FISHY!

Richard, I thank you for solving an old mystery. In my old Jaws IV review, I mentioned recalling seeing it as a kid in a version where Mr. Peebles died. Another version, it wasn't in there.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 04/14/2004 01:34 PM EST

True story- as a kid, I saved up my money for months and months to buy Super Mario 2. The day finally came when we went to the department store to look for it, but when we got there... well, they either didn't have it or it hadn't come out yet, I don't remember which. My parents suggested that I wait, but impatient bastard that I was (and am), I was having none of that- instead, I picked the game I'd rented once but couldn't manage to beat. Yes folks: Jaws. I channeled all my anger at not being able to buy what I knew in my heart of hearts was the better game, and focused it on that damn shark. He WOULD be my bitch, if I had to collect every conch shell in the damn ocean.

The ending of the story's kinda anti-climactic; eventually I did beat him. I'll tell you though, I don't know if I deluded myself or it was just the thrill of the first game I ever bought with my own money, but I always thought that game was the shit. When I rammed that bastard's big white belly and sent his ass to the briny deep... man, I was king of the world.

Still probably should've bought Startropics, though. And I haven't beaten Super Mario 2 to this day.

Okay, new question- what's the first video game you bought with your own money?

Chestnuts roasted by The Lucky One @ 04/14/2004 01:56 PM EST

Good poll topic. Hrm.

The first game I can remember literally picking out for myself (though I'm most likely wrong) was Ghosts N' Goblins. From my brother, for a birthday, at what was once C&C Comic Shop and is now a fish market, I believe for 39.99. How about that sentence? I've always had a love/hate relationship with the game: loved the theme and the characters, but couldn't get past the first few stages. As an easily frustrated child, Ghosts N' Goblins was a poor choice.

Honestly can't remember which games I actually saved up for, though. Closest I can get is saving up points from Long Beach Island's one and only casino arcade for a year on my successful trek towards a Super Nintendo -- I think it was 185,000 points or something. Also nabbed Super Wrestlemania, because I wanted to hear the Undertaker's theme song all day long.

Lucky one: I really can't remember my video Game library is BIG. That includes games for, NES, Genesis, PSOne, PS2, GBA and the PC. I'm also counting the games I sold back for EB World credit. But over the years I can estimate the amount on games which I've spent on gaming in my lifetime ranges probablly between 7,000- 9,000

Ha! I called it yesterday! I *knew* it was Jaws! I, by the way, was the kid that could never ever figure out what the hell to do in that game.
But yeah, Ghosts and Goblins was absolutely the worst game in the world for an easily frustrated kid. I don't think I made it halfway through stage one. I always got so mad when a monster hit me and then I was running around in my underpants. I never thought I'd type that goddamned sentence in my entire life.
But - to whoever said Nightmare on Elm Street was a lousy game above - you were wrong. Totally wrong. It was great, and I collected *all* of the bones and jump kicked Freddy's glove and his other random floating body parts.

I saved every penny I could to buy Faxanadu, I had no idea what it would be like but the box looked so damn cool in the catalouge..

I think I cheated though because if I remember right I only ended up saving about $15.. my mom threw the rest in to shut me up.

It ended up being worth it though.. one of the few games I can say was actually better than it looked!

The basic set with Super Mario Bros. I still have all my games. I bought a Super during the All-Stars mail-away promotion. I'm a pac(k)-rat, so I have never sold or given away my games. I need to a flea market and get Sonic 3 to go with my Sonic & Knuckles so I can play the entire adventure.

I remember selling all my childhood possessions as a kid at a yard sale, except my Nintendo supplies. My brothers and I slaved selling away all our childhood memories. We nearly had enough for our goal, enough to ride our bikes to the store down the way to purchase a NES game. I'm still sort of mad about it today. We chose XENOPHOBE! They must have really sold it on the box, because it was really disappointing. I never wanted to work again. Don't get me wrong, I wore the game out even though it sucked.

I can't remeber if I ever bought any of my own games, but some of my first were Wizards and Warriors and Bart vs. The Space Aliens. Those are great games. Has anyone ever played the SNES game, My Neighbors are Zombies, or something like that...that game was so fun. I went over to my friends house all the time to play it.

Following my side note from the other day's post:

The Wizard just ended, and I find it interesting how it was EXACTLY like Matt described, even my reactions to the scenes. Maybe I was too influenced by the review? I don't know...
But I do know I got VERY disappointed when I noticed one very important piece of information left out from the review: the competition is held at Universal Studios Hollywood, and the movie also starts the Frankenstein monster, the Wolf Man and King FREAKIN' Kong! As a bonus, they show a side of Kong never seen before. I was amazed.

Really.

Jaws was definately a wacked game. Although I don't know why that game reminded me of the old Ninja Gaiden series even though they're completely unrelated. Maybe its the wacky enemies you fight....Anyway I must leave for class and I will not stop until my crusade of getting everyone in Upstate NY hooked on this site is complete! Goddamn I got a lot of free time..

Stinger- one of the most underrated NES titles ever. It's always been a favorite of mine.

And as much as Jaws sucks, it's nowhere near as bad as Ghostbusters was. God what a shitty game.

Chestnuts roasted by El Bandito @ 04/14/2004 06:16 PM EST

cool article. Jaws: the Revenge was featured on AMC's "Classics" last night. The game was correct on one thing... the masts on the boat were friggin' HUGE!

The best movie lisenced nes game is Gremlins 2 the New Batch. You even fight all the genetically transformed gremlin bosses like electric and spider gremlin!

You had to get hit and become temporarily invicible to get to the end
Crazy eh?

I got a bunch of Atari 2600 games for a buck, though in some cases it was just grabbing something from the pile of PLEASE TAKE THESE GAMES AWAY and spending a dollar on it.

The first game I truely remember buying with actual allowance that mattered was Ultima 1 for the Commodore 64 in early 88 when I was 13. Not some lameo budget games or using birthday money, but cash I earned for all the dumb nonsense I had to do at school and home. Still a favorite game.

Ghostbusters for the C64 was damned fun, and the Sega Master System version is pretty sweet too.

As to the Jaws game? It sucked, simple as that.

I believe the first video game I ever bought with my own money was Goonies 2 for Nintendo. It was a decent game. Really weird, but decent.

Chestnuts roasted by beSharp @ 04/15/2004 12:24 AM EST

I don't know what the first game I bought was... My parents let me pick games, and paid for it with my birthday/Christmas money without me realizing it... I'm currently the proud owner of 252 videogames, a few PC games and a nearly a gig of roms of games I missed out on due to buying games based on boxart, and having no income as a kid.

Chestnuts roasted by RewolfJ @ 04/15/2004 03:09 AM EST

To correct a statement earlier. Maximo is not the sequel to Ghost and Goblins. Instead Ghouls and Ghosts and Super Gouls and Ghosts is all part of the Ghosts and goblins trilogy. Maximo is just a cheap rip off claiming to be it. I was not impressed with the game. It stunk to Hell.

Three year reader, first time writer- I just had to say that I will always have a place in my heart for LJN. Back in the day, my Dad was friends with the guy that ran the LJN warehouse at Port Newark, NJ and we got almost anything made by them for free. (My Dad was a cop, maybe he was really bad at being on the take and accepted toys- never thought about it) We got their Nintendo games, the rubber WWF guys, Thundercats, and a Michael Jackson microphone that was supposed to make your voice come out of the radio- though the thing didn't work nearly as well as it did for Bart Simpson.

Anyway, I had T &C Surf Design before I even had a Nintendo. What torture for a 12 year old to get a game for the hottest thing around and not be able to use it! Also got Jaws, Friday the 13th and Back to the Future for free. Yes, they all sucked in their own way, but the thing is that we didn't know any better at the time. I got a lot of use out of a lot of crappy games. I remember being amazed at title screens just because Atari didn't have them.

You know how everybody has a "rich friend" growing up? Even if you're upper middle class, you still had a "rich friend"

Well, my rich friend had one of those sweet projector TVs (the kind that projected from the floor, so nobody could be in the room while you were watching TV unless you were on the sofa right behind the projector.

Anyway, despite being rich (this TV was in the game room... which was basically the whole 3rd floor) he always had the worst games. I remember being kind of bummed, because going to a rich kid's house, you should always be playing the best games, but it was always Jaws and 1942.

by the time I was there for a couple of hours, I just wanted to go home and play zelda.

Chestnuts roasted by Chopstick Sensei @ 04/15/2004 11:52 AM EST

I here you there chopstick sensei. Although I didn't have a "rich" friend, cause I live in the ghetto where the only "rich" people are the drug dealers. But we still went over to each other's houses to get in some good gaming. We usually left because we would end up playing Double Dare, and the control response on that game was horrific and every time I'd be on the final challenge it'd screw me over big. Damn that Double Dare obstical course. But I always wanted to go on the real show....that've been mondo to the max.

I should probably add that that was the only time in which I was ever able to beat the game. I couldn't poke that damn fish after that.

And Matt, that Sbaitso thing is damn creepy. I hope I never have to actually see one of those. Especially not in a store, because I know I'll buy it.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 04/15/2004 07:19 PM EST
