03/23/2004 Entry: "New Article: American Gladiators Candy Bars!"

Hey, anybody want an American Gladiators Chewy Nougat Bar? Made in 1993 by Dr. Channard, the criminal candies mixed fruit flavors with puttylike nougat to create the snack no kid would ever want to eat. Even with pretty pictures of Zap and Turbo all over the boxes, nothing could save this horrific edible from its rightful resting place in Hell. Review also includes a quick intro about some of the other Gladiator-related merchandise we've seen through the years, and ends off with crossed-out nougat jokes. Enjoy.

Is it made with real gladitors?

when i was on summer break back in the old days i would watch american gladitors every morning on usa. it was pretty cool to my 10 year old mind. and the nouget bars are just disgusting.

Of course he licked'em. Nougat, especially modern nougat, is a unique polymer compound that mutates during its amazing early stages of life, but yet retains its' hypnotic power to compell all within range to at least smell the smelly smell. It also can make toasters dance.

Let me holla at cha playa!!!!
Once again it be me, ya boy TRL. And, as that honkey Ric Flair would say, I am now stylin and profilin, my greatness over to that there otha franchise known as Smackdown. And now maybe that Whitey isn't reunning the show anymore, I will get a shot at da GM position. Beelee dat playa.
Now before ya'll start the haterization, I will have you know that I would be fair and impartial. That's right, we got a minority champion. Even if he is gonna jack my car, he's still down with the brothas, beelee dat playa. And he sussesfully defended last night. So if I become GM, don't expect Whitey to come crashing my party.
Now on to American Gladiators. Or should I call it, American Slave Mastas. Because who was always the star? That cracka Nitro. With his long hair and chiseled good looks and... *AHEM* anyway, Where was the black guy? He was so unprominint I don't even rememba his name. Belee dat playa. At least in that rip off show they did a few years back, the black man was the star. And rightfully so. Beelee dat playa.

American Gladiators was a HI-Larious show. The best event was the one where the contenders had to shoot the target above the gladiator, while the gladiator's had a machine gun of tennis ball. AHH, good times...good times. OH YEAH, the candy looks disgusting, but at least you can use em' as gross colored door stops. X-E rules. Catch you on the flip side.

Oh what great rolemodels the gladiators were. In 1993-94 we had our own version of American Gladiators here in Finland as did the australians in 1995 and the danish in 2003 (?). Last year one of the finnish gladiators got elected to parliament and later tried to shoot his wife with an illegal handgun after enjoying the finer things in life ie. a healthy diet of pills'n'booze.
Also last year a female gladiator (gladiatress?) was tried for murdering two men,
harboring a criminal and two counts of disturbing a grave site. Apparently she and her boyfriend had dismembered the bodies and dumped the parts all over town. She had also eaten parts of a body and carried the head around with her in a backpack.
I doubt they'll be showing reruns again any time soon..

the ferrara food company i believe is the same one involved with ferrara pan candies, which used to feature such politically incorrect titles as cherry clan, melon heads, alexander the grape, and the like. you could usually pick them up from the good humor man for rather cheap. i think their cany can still be found at micro-deli/food shops but every thing is now called lemon heads, melon heads, etc...their candy was amazingly inconsistant and one would be sour while the next being a solid mass of dyed sugar.

Funny thing is, I don't remember this show, though it seems like I should if it was really that wacky and really ran that long. I do, however, remember a similar show that had kids as the contestants, caled "Global Guts." A bunch of kids all over the world played in these weird events, and at the very end had to climb a huge flashing plastic mountain. The winner got a prize, a medal, and their country's national anthem was played at the end of the show.

Chestnuts roasted by nelson @ 03/23/2004 06:47 PM EST

I actually bought a sealed box of these at a dollar store a few years ago (1997 or 98 I think). They were 5 for a buck (the candy itself), so they made me buy an extra one just to even things out. So I did eat the spare one. The lemon-lime one. I do remember it actually being in the shape of a bar and being rather pale green in color. I don't really remember the taste though, but don't remember getting sick or anything from it. I think I might've liked it even. I'm not touching the rest of the box though.

I also started opening theee year old Star Wars Episode 1 fruit snacks just to get some more space in the box they were in, I'm still debating whether or not I should try eating any of them. The regular shaped things anyway, not the roll thing. That stuff is REALLY nasty looking now...

Christ Matt, I would've loved to be in the same room as you when you opened those things up. The flock of "Ewww!!! Gross!!!! Bogus!!!" was probably great in numbers. I loved/love American Gladiators though, is that free hat offer still available? I also remember the International Gladiators, the foreign female glads werent very strong but damn were they hot. Especially that one from austrailia. I still remember my favorite competator, I forget his real name but his nick-name was Bam bam. My favorite gladiator was always Nananananitro cuz he was a badass. The first season of Gladiators ruled over all others. They had the Executioner guy as the ref, and instead of hiding behind big silver shield-dealies in the Assault game, they hid behind bushes. Dead bushes. First season was Badass. By the end they were running track on the ceiling...

Anyone ever catch "Battle Dome" a few years back? It was a Gadiator-like show with wrestler-type characters and stories. Bobbie Brown, of Warrant "Cherry Pie" video fame, was the best known person on the show, but Terry Crews aka T-Money's acting career has since taken off. My friends loved the show for a while; especially the blond guy since they had seen him in the slightly-more-than-meterosexual "International Male" clothing catalog that came to their apartment out of nowhere.

I watched American Gladiator after all the Saturday Morning Cartoons ended and we got to the really boring adult shows. That show was fricken awesome! Better than WWF (because my parents didn't let me watch WWF), more exciting than an episode of Power Rangers (but I didn't know that back than) and it was the only show were muscles actually made the women look good (however, my privates were hairless at the time, so it's a moot point).

Great article, Matt. Matty.

Ok, now to state the obvious - those so-called candies were the most outrageously disgusting things I've ever seen. Matt, I can't believe you didn't mutuate or something just from touching those things. Have you checked for a third arm or super strength or the ability to wield nunchuckas with a shell on your back yet?

My family didn't have cable during much of "American Gladiators" heyday, and I didn't see the point, anyway. I thought (and still thought) it was all pretty darn silly. I also related it to wrestling with better-looking actors, and I've never been a huge wrestling fan, either.

Just a few weeks back we pulled up the American Gladiators game on the trusty old emulator (i'm guessing snes?) but the controls/game mechanics were so awful that it became a test of who could get their misshappen sprite through the Gauntlet through sheer willpower and screaming. It kept the rest of us entertained for quite some time though.
Can somebody explain to me why there was no delicious Nitro nougat? Did the candy go into production after he had made the switch from Gladiator to ringside reporter guy? There's a long list of dirty candy bar jokes I want to make right now, but I'm going to be the bigger person and refrain.

Super Mario Show On DVD news!

After a pair of previous one-off releases (here and here, though the latter was actually a later version of the show) whetted everyone's appetite, demand was strong for a "proper" release of The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, complete with the as-aired live action sequences by wrestler "Captain" Lou Albano, depicted in-character as Mario (a more natural fit than anyone would have guessed!).

The powers-that-be have listened. The Super Mario Brothers Super Show returns to DVD this July, in the first of what are hoped to be a long series of releases. Included will be the companion series The Legend of Zelda, which is proper per the original broadcasts. The first release will include five episodes, in order of when they originally aired, which are:
"The Bird! The Bird!"
"King Mario of Cramalot"
"Butch Mario & the Luigi Kid"
"Mario's Magic Carpet"
(Legend of Zelda): "The Ringer"

Each episode will include the live-action with Lou Albano and also a bonus interview with Executive Producer (and DiC Chairman/CEO) Andy Heyward. This should include the questions submitted by fans from TVShowsOnDVD and other participating websites. DiC and UAVCO, who are releasing this disc together, say that additional bonus features may be added later.

The official release date will be July 6, 2004. The DVDs will have a list price of $14.99, and the studio expects them to sell for about $10 in most stores. If these releases prove successful, they will continue to release Super Mario Brothers Super Show episodes in the as-aired order, with the possibility of a half/full season box set later on.

Cover art wasn't made available just yet, but we'll have that for you as soon as we can, so stay tuned.

Rockin' Rollergames did have the croc pit of doom!(paraphrasing) I think the show was just called "Rollergames." There was also the wall of death, which was just a really high banked wall that they would occasionaly skate up. But when it comes to Kool-Aid, however, grape THE flavour in my opinion. The tangy:sweet ratio is just perfect in that flavour. Plus it really goes great with vodka.

You know we all are all just waiting for you to expose us to more rotting candy right?
I love this site.

Chestnuts roasted by Randomkill @ 03/24/2004 07:17 PM EST

Hey Matt, do grape LifeSavers count as grape candy? Because I think people actually like those. Or maybe they just secretly contain heroine and therefore are highly addictive and people don't actually like them then, they just really need them.

Chestnuts roasted by Gabbylicious @ 03/24/2004 07:48 PM EST

Ahh... good times you've allowed me to revisit there, Matt.

My fav. event was Assault. I remember one time Gemini (one of the first generation gladiators) was knocked out twice in the same event. His reaction was priceless. "WHAT'S GOING ON???" CLASSIC!!!

Also, the Kyler Storm flip incident from season 7 was teh bomb!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Scott @ 03/24/2004 08:48 PM EST

Oh, and one more thing. I searched the whole page for that mystery mp3, and couldn't find it. Where is it?

Chestnuts roasted by Scott @ 03/24/2004 08:51 PM EST

for those of you still confused by the red scribbling at the end:

http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?userid=2WA8D2HEX5&WRK=194882

^^click the link, and click on the first track.

And Matt's right, grape candy is horrible. In fact, grape anything is horrible.

In case anyone is wondering...

http://www.ferrarapan.com/

They're based out of Chicago, actually Forest Park. But they're still terrible. Whoever thought Boston Baked Beans as a candy... Idiot.

Chestnuts roasted by Joe @ 03/24/2004 11:14 PM EST

I remember those, but never bought them. If Gemini had been on the bars, I might have bought one.

Sabre went on to bigger, and shittier things. Anyone that's seen Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (And God help you if you have), will recognize him as Jax. Between him ruining my favorite character from the game, and the blonde chick from Pensacola Wings of Gold non-acting, it was a terrible film. Doesn't mean I won't watch it though.

Another worthy addition to the collection of articles on Extremely Expired Food. Now if you can only get your hands on a 2-litre bottle of Crystal Pepsi...
I heard that stuff has turned a translucent brown by now, and is the consistency of semi-set glue.

There was this one contestant on American Gladiators who did a backflip over the Gladiator in the Football style event. I only mention this because it was the raddest thing I've ever seen. That is all.

For some reason the word Nougat reminds me of Dhalsim when he says and does his Yoga Noogie.

80's Kid - Zap flashed more than that - she did a pictorial in the February 1996 (I think) Playboy, around the time when she was on JAG.

Does anyone else remember another obscure AG ripoff called Knights & Warriors? It ran on Fox on Saturday afternoons here in NY, around 1994-95ish.

Chestnuts roasted by Seth Christenfeld @ 03/25/2004 01:22 PM EST

Maybe I'm sick, but I always thought Zap was really hot. Maybe it's because she's the first muscle chick I ever say that had boods. And mighty melons they were!

They were mighty indeed!

I don't see what everyone's gripe is about Nougat. I personally like him as an artist and think that Cat Scratch Fever is one of the best songs out there. Oh and that stuff on the page was pretty gross, looks like wood filler or something

Chestnuts roasted by Yertu @ 03/25/2004 04:32 PM EST

I like it when he shoots flaming arrows at his guitar. TWANG!

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 03/25/2004 04:53 PM EST

You know, I actually like some of the stuff from Ferrara Pan. Especially those Lemonheads. They have the perfect tangyness to them.I also like that Cherry Clan stuff...oh yeah...and Jawbreakers.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 03/25/2004 09:30 PM EST

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention fireballs. Thos things burnt the roof off of my mouth, but I didn't give a shit. I earned bragging rights by being the only kid I knew who kept the damn thing in his mouth entire time without drinking any water. Okay, I'm bragging too much.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 03/25/2004 09:33 PM EST

Seth: Yeah, I remember that show. It was kinda retarded. The warriors seemed reminded me of WWF wrestlers, only these guys were not at all cool.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 03/25/2004 09:36 PM EST

American Gladiators used to be my life. I watched a rerun not long ago on USA and that one guy, Dylan Bruno, was a contestant before he was an actor. He was the asshole guy in The Rage: Carrie II. He was also in other crappy movies of which I cannot name off hand. Just an interesting fact...And the candies look like when dry dog food chunks like Ol' Roy get all wet from being out in the rain and they turn into mush balls. That is nas-tee.

Chestnuts roasted by macks @ 03/25/2004 10:23 PM EST

Where's the Malibu bar?

Zap showed her tit and a whole lot more in a 90's playboy spread.

Oddly enough, I've eaten these! It was a few years back, and they weren't deformed, so maybe nougat is good until about year 8 or something. In any case, even fully formed they were horrible. I got them at Big Lots, so maybe that explains it... I was hoping for some sort of fruity nougat experience kinda like Mamba... No such luck.
