Hahah, I loved the look on that old man's face!! Too bad he's most assuredly dead now, his most memorable moment in life a one-liner in a cheese commercial.
I remember this commercial, but I don't think it stuck around in our school's culture as much as say the clapper or 'I've fallen and I can't get up'

My god, these things still suck kids into the madness that is preprocessed dairy products. My five year old will be quitely sitting in front of the rectangular babysitter complacently examining whatever goodness he can find in his various orfices (mostly on the head, thank god) when a stringy cheezy like product will appear. Without fail, he'll earnestly pipe up with a "I realllly think we need to get some of that Dad" At this point, I normally sling him over my shoulder, carry his momento-like ass down to the kitchen, throw open the door to the fridge to reveal the 20 odd family packs of expired cheezy-stringy thingies waging a life or death struggle over the last kraft cheese slice.
"But I think I like them now!" he inevitably wails.
I got to tell you, every time I hear a radio commercial for the Canadian charity "Cash For Kids", I cant help wondering how much I could get for him...

A commercial that stuck with me is a McDonalds one where the kids sit there and fiddle with the food. Like one moves the straw in a cup up and down and other things and it turns to a impromptu jam session. Dunno why,but it always stuck with me after...alot of years.

I, myself, was a string puller, not a lazy chunk biter. Born in '82, I would have been 3 or so when this baby popped onto the teli. So, whether I ever saw it and loved it for what it is would be far embedded in my subconscious along with the other memories from the younger years. Still, I can see how this commercial in its heyday would just be taken lightly and never thought of twice...until now. Thank Gawd for Polly-O...and Schjimi.

Chestnuts roasted by Amanda @ 02/19/2004 08:55 PM EST
Though I first thought of the parrot rapping Polly-O commercial when I saw this mentioned on the main X-E page, I do remember both commercials. I was strictly a string-puller on the rare occasions we got these as kids, but now, it doesn't matter. It's all cheese, no matter where you bite into it. I don't often eat them now, either, because they still aren't cheap. I will occasionally buy them on when they're on sale, but that happens once in a blue, pink, and purple moon.
The small grocery store where I work was still clearing out its Valentine's candy the last time I was there (I've had the last two days off), but I'm going to assume they didn't lump giant heart-shaped boxes of candy into carts with hand printed half-price signs taped to them to make room for food that's good for you.

Sadly, if this commercial was out in 1985-1986, I was 2-3 years old, so I don't remember it. But wow, they knew X-E would be reviewing this commerical nearly 20 years later. I mean, "Week Old Pizza: Half Off?" They knew this commercial would have a cult following.

Okay, apparently I'm the only one who noticed that of the three phrases that the kids were so emphatic in uttering, like a crack whore calling to a john, only one of them was actually Italian. The other two were French! "Bellisimo", Italian. "Manifique (sp?) French. "C'est ci bon!" French. What the? If you went into ANY pizza joint in the eighties spouting off anything but the prescribed dialogue, you were doomed to the END OF THE LINE where you were gonna end up with the three-hour-old pizza, and no funky lip from anyone!
And I'm bitter that I never got the damn string cheese.

Matt, I love how you can wring so many words out of a 20 second string cheese commercial. You rock!
Blog idea: Everything I Know, I Learned from TV. For me, I learned that you never have to ue greetings when talking on the phone. "Hello" and "Goodbye" aren't actually necessary. You pick up, and the person on the other end starts talking. Of course, you know who it is, even w/o Caller ID. When their speech is over, you hang up. Rude? No, it's not rude. It's TV.

The blonde kid had mob ties. He was the son of Don Anthony Michael Hall. That's the reason Fred and Schjimi were so quick to answer Blonde Kid's ridiculous order of a pizza, with extra cheese, hold the tomato sauce and hold the crust.

Just a side comment... watching Futurama last night, when Fry asks the What-If machine what the world would be like if it was more like a video game. Well, when the Nintendoo64ians land and all the old school video game icons climb out, I totally geeked when I realized, among the other recognizable characters, the obscure, Mars Attacks!-like creature was a creature from the old arcade classic, Robotron 2084. How I could pick that out from memories of a few pixels, I don't know. But I geeked... like a true dork, I geeked.
Ok, side comment end.

MG, they still make Dunkaroos, or at least did until fairly recently. Now they have all the old shapes, from the sports to just the various Kangaroo poses. (I think the contest was how we got that kanagroo. If not, he was never replaced.) Never cared for the vanilla frosting on that. It was pure sugar cream.
Cheese the best part of the pizza? I'm a cheesecake addict and I put cream cheese on my Ritz crackers (3-ply, baby! Three crackers held together by Philidephia cream cheese). But the best part of pizza is the dang crust! Why do you think fried dough is the food to have at carnivals and amusement parks?
Chestnuts roasted by ShadowWing the Technorganic Autobot @ 02/20/2004 06:01 PM EST
Hmm... sorry I haven't written in here lately, I've had midterms and stuff.
I was never a fan of the string cheese stuff. I'm not a fan of "processed" cheese, by which I mean cheese that isn't of an identifiable type like "Cheddar" or "Swiss", because of the taste. I've always preferred slicing into a block, preferably non-coloured yellow finely-aged Cheddar. We did have string cheese in Canada, but I believe it was made by McCain and wasn't the brand seen in that commercial. And I have a great memory for the sort of commercials that they'd show on WVNY-22 (ABC) in Burlington VT during Transformers, G.I. Joe and Jem and the Holograms, but I'm afraid I don't remember that commercial at all. Maybe it's a regional thing. WVNY-22 seemed to air more Fruit Corners Fruit Roll-ups and Fruit Wrinkles and the Mini-Pops Colgate Pump ad (the one sung to the tune of "Baggy Trousers", which Matt featured in this UGO piece) during each commercial break than any other non-toy-related ads.
Well, I think I've said enough on-topic. I've just found something on the Internet and, knowing the sort of people that read this site, I know I can't possibly be the only X-E reader whom would be thrilled to know that there is now an offical Doctor Snuggles website, the very strange cartoon where the lead character was an inventor voiced by Peter Ustinov, and, better yet, it's run by the creator of the series, Jeffrey O'Kelly. I gotta ask Mr. O'Kelly what the deal was with the tea-sipping camel in the clouds; was it all one big drug reference?

I think the 80's seen many pizza related merchandise come out, pizza seemed to become more popular with kids in the 80's because of Showbiz Pizza and Chuck E Cheese, where all the latest video games lured in kids, something Ronald couldn't compete with.

Bravo! Tour-deForce! The commercial and the review.
This commercial had been nestled sweetly in the recesses of my brain for lo! these 20-odd some years.
Matt has lovingly retrieved it and held it up to the light for all to see.
I also thank him for taking the time and effort to write about it and procure the download.
However, I believe these Pizza guys, due to their age and occupation dealing with the public, obviously had enough street smarts to know when they were being "had", so it was heartening for me to see them "playing along" with the seemingly odd requests from their youngish customers. This is borne-out by the fact that liver-lips #1 was shown smiling knowingly at the end of the commercial holding a pizza box neatly stacked with the packaged congealed salty milk for the Nerdettes to grab with their maws. It not only takes time and effort to pre-fold and store those pizza boxes (I'm a former pizza delivery boy), but to accomodate those annoying kids with an item obviously not on the menu (what would they charge? The proprieters probably gave them away as a grandfatherly gesture) while trying to run a business puts those guys into the realm of the Biblical Job.
And good God! I had forgotten about the signs in the backround. They don't make commercials like that anymore.
'Nuff said

Oh, Dunkaroos. I haven't had them in so long. If they do still truely make them then I have got to get my hands on some.

And here's the surprise of the week... Eurotrip features full frontal male nudity and people having sex in a confessional at the Vatican. I'm not offended, but I don't know how they got that by the rating board without getting an R rating (Up here, R means you can't see it unless you're 18. Eurotrip is 18A which means that anyone under 18 can see it as long as they con some uninformed parent into taking them). It had its moments though, worth seeing if you've got nothing better to do.

That commercial looks funny as hell. For some reason, I can't recall seeing it when I was younger. I wish my stupid computer would let the clip work, so I could see it together.
Ummm, chunk biter or string puller. I do both, depending on what mood I was in. If I'm hungry, I'm sure as heck not going to play with my food and pick at it. I want to take a chunk of cheese so I can get more taste. Other times I just pull strings off, but it seems like you don't get much taste when you eat little strands.

...Polly-O? Da hell? This must be an Eastern thing.
Gah, someone do a snarky review of those old Carl's Jr. ads, with Carl Karcher and Happy Star arguing over advertising, so them easties know what it feels like to be so left out!

1) Someone has taken it upon themself to interfere with access to this site. This is coming from a "gray area" if you catch my drift.
2) After checking Polly'O's website for product distribution and reading Polly'O's "family history" I clicked on "a message from our lawyers". Holy moley!

The problem with chunk biters is that there is entirely too much cheese being digested at one time. The subtleties of enjoyment through slowly chewing and appreciating each strand are where it's at, dawg.
And Matt, if you're going to do a countdown, how about a countdown to that holiest of holies, the rise of the Shamrock Shake!!
Chestnuts roasted by Headmaster @ 02/21/2004 11:41 AM EST
I've put off coming to the site for like a week and I only have the 103rd comment? You're slippin', Matt, you're slippin. Nah, seriously though, you got me wanting string cheese, and the only thing stopping me is the fact that I don't feel like walking to the store in the snow. But I could really go for a cheese with nuttin.
By the way, Matt, did you ever get my e-mail with my idea for an x-e television show?

Hey Matt, Whats with yer fonts?
Chestnuts roasted by Cyanyde @ 02/21/2004 01:47 PM EST
Shamrock Shakes? Last time I had one of those, the green color didn't digest. Never mind how I found out.

While we're talking pizza related 80s products with great ads, how can we forget Pizzerias chips? Those things were like crack, and they had a great ad.

I'm surprised anyone else remembered this commercial. This was one of my favorites way back in the day.
As for the whole chunk biter vs. string puller thing, I did both.

John Caprodice is also a bus driver in "Speed", but sadly, he dies in the first bus explosion. It was very sad, but at least he helped those poor kids with their crazy cheese fetishes that ultimately saved us all.
Chestnuts roasted by Creedo @ 02/22/2004 02:53 PM EST
I don't pull it apart in strings, I pull big pieces off it. So does that make me a chunky string biter?
Chestnuts roasted by Skitzo from stupid5pin.com @ 02/22/2004 06:06 PM EST
God, I remember that commercial. It was cool and I found it strange how those kids starting speaking French on the spot for no reason. What gives?

I despised then adored that commercial when I was a kid!!! It's so mind-boggling, you really have to wonder who came up with it. AND who directed it!
They should remake it for a new generation... maybe with a cameo from Capodice, just as a little nod to those who remember...

Finally this commercial gets recognized as the cultural icon it truly was. Everyone and I mean everyone was walking around saying "NUTHIN?!" back in the day. And yes, the nerdy guy was hated by all, simply for the way he said "c'est si bon!".
Chestnuts roasted by YES! @ 02/25/2004 10:04 AM EST
I completly forgotten about that commercial!!
NUTTIN??!!
Chestnuts roasted by Jimmy @ 02/26/2004 05:30 PM EST

The blond guy in the middle is my cousin. We're having our family reunion this summer and I can't wait to give him crap for this for the 500th time. Thanks for the memories.
