01/16/2004 Entry: "New Article: POP QWIZ Colored Popcorn!"

How many of you remember "Pop Qwiz?" Made in the early 90s, this ill-fated Pop Secret brand combined the familiar taste of buttered popcorn with wacky ass neon colors. If you wanted to eat red, blue, green or purple popcorn, you had to be a Pop Qwiz loyalist. The stuff seems to have been criminally short-lived. The world wasn't ready for pink popcorn, but that doesn't mean we can't reminisce. Review includes a download for what's probably the only Pop Qwiz commercial that ever existed. And Guessin' Ted, too! Click here to read it!

Oh my god. I remember this... I tried it once.. popped the bag for too long, thus burning the contents to an inedible blackness. :-(

Chestnuts roasted by Paul @ 01/16/2004 02:14 AM EST

I had the burnination problem too. In fact, no matter how many bags I tried, I never got to see what my mystery color was, as they all came out charcoal colored.

Chestnuts roasted by GadgetMouse @ 01/16/2004 02:25 AM EST

I never got any :( My mom lied yo me and told me she would buy me some and never did? How long did pop qwiz last? Maybe 2 years?

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 01/16/2004 02:51 AM EST

It managed to last for a while, but not long enough to be considered a success. Poor Pop Qwiz.

I remember that commercial a little too well, Like it was on yesterday or something. I don't recall eating any of it though.

5th post!! :D

Boy howdy I remember this shit. I remember being turned off by the fact that it was funky colors but not flavored different. When I was a kid we had this store up the street in a strip mall and the only thing they sold was popcorn. Flavored, colored popcorn. They were gone in about a year, maybe less. I can't imagine why...the market for bubble gum and red dye flavored popcorn must have been poor. They even had "confetti" flavored popcorn which was essentially a little bit of everything. So yes, you could get mint flavored popcorn mixed with cheddar. ICK!

Heeloyd in da house!

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/16/2004 03:28 AM EST

I remember that commercial. The thing that bothered me, was what sort of prize the other kids got. Did they get to eat their bags of popcorn? Where they banished to the Phantom Zone? Or did the host Superkick them through a Babershop window?

Chestnuts roasted by Kool-Aid Man @ 01/16/2004 03:36 AM EST

I used to eat that flavored colored popcorn I used to get it at the local mall between 87 and 92. There is one like that at a different mall I go to now. ALthough the rainobw flavored one I got were all sweet flavors; chocolate, grape, cherry, orange, lime and other flavors I can't remember. I used to "share" it with my cousins and give them all the flavors I didn't like :)

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 01/16/2004 03:37 AM EST

I'm with you Heeloyd, I feel like I just saw that damn commercial yesterday. I still have to crack up everytime Ted says "Tastes so buttery!" and hops up and down in his chair like an asshat. Ah cheese of the early 90's......

Chestnuts roasted by Loneman1 @ 01/16/2004 03:46 AM EST

oh off your horse Kool Aid Man - you know the superkick wasn't for 4 or so years. They were just thrown through the barbershop window.

Another fun American snack your neibours to the north never had.
We got jipped on the pop qwiz.

Chestnuts roasted by turkeys can't fly? @ 01/16/2004 03:55 AM EST

I stand corrected. Superkick, then tossed through a window. In the extended version of the commercial, Orville Redenbacher dropped and elbow on Ted, and nipped up.

Chestnuts roasted by Kool-Aid Man @ 01/16/2004 03:58 AM EST

I remember the commercial although I never actually tried the stuff. I think the reason why it failed was probably because it was named after a method of torture that the target audience of the commercials had probably been subjected to.

On the other hand, there were also some popsicles that used a similar gimmick, in which the artificial colorings didn't match the artificial flavorings, so a red popsicle might be blue raspberry. Those were similarly unsuccessful, but I think they were intended as a short-term gimmick.

Then, of course, there were the "White Mystery" Airheads. Those actually were popular. Maybe the success of a gimmick depends entirely on luck.

Chestnuts roasted by gmfbrown @ 01/16/2004 06:54 AM EST

Great review! That ad reminded me of some of those game shows that were on the network on "UHF."

Chestnuts roasted by mjf7583 @ 01/16/2004 08:04 AM EST

White Mystery Airheads SUCKED. I never got a flavor I liked in those.

I've never heard of this before. Shame, I would have wanted to try it if I was old enough to remember back then.

Chestnuts roasted by Behonkiss @ 01/16/2004 08:31 AM EST

I pushed my mother fervently to buy some of this for several weeks, convinced for some reason that colored popcorn had to taste better than regular popcorn. My color turned out to be green, and it was AWFUL in every sense of the word.

I HATED ever kernal, but I had to force the shit down in order to maintain my integrity. I couldn't let it be known that I had been wrong to urge so strongly for mom to buy this crap...especially after pushing so hard for those Kahn's Corndogs that wound up untouched in the back of the freezer for years after that first taste....

Chestnuts roasted by John @ 01/16/2004 08:50 AM EST

yeah, I'm terrible at cooking popcorn, but I was an expert at guessing what color would come out.

BLACK. because I burned that shit everytime. If I was on that game show, i woulda asked them to let me cook my own popcorn... then we'll see who's laughing TED

Yet another thing that I was born too late to experience...

:(

Time to help Paul out! I'm home for the entire weekend and more or less snowed in (the roads are crap). What should I do?

Chestnuts roasted by Paul @ 01/16/2004 09:40 AM EST

Triple H was offered the job of distributing the rest of the Pop-Qwiz inventory but he declined because he refuses to sell anything... ;-)

-Paul (not a Triple H fan)

Chestnuts roasted by Paul @ 01/16/2004 09:40 AM EST

I never had the pop qwiz [sic] crap, but I do remember the commercial. I'm not gonna attempt to download the commercial to check it out, but part of my memory isn't too clear... (another thing that happens when you get old, Paul.) Was the whole popped kernel neon colored, or just the kernel husk? I've had 'confetti' popcorn of a different nature, which was just dyed unpopped kernels .. no fancy flavoring... those things just had multi-colored husks, but the popcorn kernels (i.e., the popcorn meat) were white white. Not too impressive.
...
Kernel sounds weird when you say it too much... kernel.

Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 01/16/2004 10:04 AM EST

Yup. I think the reason this popcorn was so unsuccessful was because of the burn factor. I think whatever was in the dye, make it burn a lot quicker. I never ever burned ANY microwave popcorn, EXCEPT this one, which I burned nearly every time. If it didn't end up burned, a big majority of the kernals went unpopped. Lame.

Chestnuts roasted by B-Dawg @ 01/16/2004 10:07 AM EST

Haven't read the article yet, work coming up, but I can tell you guys this stuff rocks. Tastes exactly the same but exactly the type of thing kids would go gaga over. Last I ever saw of anything close to it was a multi-color bag of this stuff for stove-top. Man I miss this stuff

Chestnuts roasted by J-Dog @ 01/16/2004 10:50 AM EST

Ugh, I remember this stuff. I loved it absolutely to death. I can't imagine how many boxes my brother and I went through as a child, but I have lamented the loss of this wonderful popcorn for years. Sure, I could go out and buy some NORMAL Pop Secret, but it just wouldn't be the same. I couldn't whip open a bag and amaze my less-endowed friends with my fancifully colored kernels of joy, nor could I partake of the quiz myself. I hope they bring it back soon, though, for all the children of this most recent generation. Surely, I would ignore my attmepts to be healthy and get the low fat kind if only they tempted me with *color.*

Chestnuts roasted by Shelly @ 01/16/2004 11:29 AM EST

i remember that stuff...ahhh good times. then after it disappeared we tried to recreate it by dipping popcorn in red koolaid. not a good idea, dont try it. i say we get a petition going to bring it back. haha.

Chestnuts roasted by Pam @ 01/16/2004 12:20 PM EST

I absolutely LOVED this stuff as a child. I remember being totally depressed (well, as depressed as a pre-pubescent girl can get) when they stopped making it.

Everything else from my childhood is making a comeback. Why not Pop Qwiz?

Chestnuts roasted by pnthergrl @ 01/16/2004 12:20 PM EST

I could of sworn i already psoted, but i don't see my psot anywhere so i'm goign to psot it again.

I vividly remeber this stuff. It tasted like shit, but i bugged my mom to get it every week, because the novelty of colored popcorn prevailed my tastebuds.

Oh yeah matt i have a sugesstion. You should get a message board. These blog comments are fine and dandy but a message baord would get rid of most of the off topic comments, and having a registered name would be nice so noboy could just put in my name and pretend to be me.

Chestnuts roasted by Bright Noah @ 01/16/2004 12:27 PM EST

I remember that the networks always aired those Pop Qwiz commercials at least twice during every break. I always thought that the nost (his name was Playtoh?!) looked a lot like a broke-down Vanilla Ice who, come to think of it, is sort of a "negative-image of M.C. Hammer. Man, those commercials were annoying!

Chestnuts roasted by Mike D. @ 01/16/2004 12:29 PM EST

We'll see about adding a new message board in the future, but it definitely wouldn't be for a while. On the upside, I'm working on an option for blog readers to register their nicks complete with a bio page and whatnot, hopefully soon.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 01/16/2004 12:29 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 01/16/2004 12:31 PM EST

Chestnuts roasted by Bright Noah @ 01/16/2004 12:36 PM EST

I thought this popcorn had a different flavor to it like colored caramel corn but I must be thinking about something else...anyway, making something different just to appeal to kids is nothing new, I remember the graham crackers shaped like dinosaurs...or were they cookies? Oh well...anyway, I just thought the pop qwiz people would still be on the market today if they had gone all out on that first commercial and hired JD Roth. Yeah! My man JD! That would've added at least 2-3 months to the life span of this craptacular product.

By the way, John and Chad two real good funny posts in a row, I too have known the pain of eating a food I've begged for and now must suffer for my insolence and easily manipulated childish mind...I am of course referring to the cereal with the comic strips on it(Breakfast Funnies?), man I'm sure sure wringing out a dish cloth used to pick up spilled Cookie Crisp would taste better than this bile. Ah, memories!

Chestnuts roasted by whitemale_98 @ 01/16/2004 12:41 PM EST

And to think, I would have probably have gone the rest of my life without ever thinking of Pop Qwiz. But of course the second I see it's the subject of Matt's latest update all the memories instantly rush back. I remember the commercial well, but it seems like I only tried to stuff once. Or maybe never at all. Maybe I just thought I tried it cause I saw the commercial ten times a day. Oh well.

Chestnuts roasted by Rood @ 01/16/2004 12:47 PM EST

Oh boy... Pop Qwiz. Heavily advertised during "Chip n' Dales Rescue Rangers" as I recall. In college during my 'starving' year I managed to swipe a giant box worth of the single vending machine packets from a store roomn and lets just say that I haven't eaten much popcorn ever since...

Chestnuts roasted by Admiral Crunch @ 01/16/2004 12:55 PM EST

I too was unfortunate enough to attempt to "recreate" the wonderful colors of pop qwiz popcorn went it fled the shelves of our local market. I may have been a bit less well attended to as a child however because I had ready access to food coloring dyes. MMMMMMM eating colored popcorn with hands, face, and clothing dyed is infinitely better than eating it while clean.

Chestnuts roasted by Tryptophan36 @ 01/16/2004 01:00 PM EST

I do indeed remember this delightful treat! It was fuckin' extra greasy as I recall, but it was a staple of my pantry. In fact I ate copious amounts of this stuff, drinking liters of Crystal Pepsi whilst watching TGIF and pulling muscles trying to do the Urkel dance.

Bright Noah, as the resident random link guy, I must protest Matt bringing back the message boards. X-E is pretty high up on Google searches. The more random the comments are here then the more random visitors you help bring in for X-E's benefit, and hopefully the new visitors as well.

i also had some trouble with the whole burning deal. but one sweet memorable time i did succeed in not burning it...but it turned out to be yellow. it wasn't as exciting as i thought it would be, so i threw the rest of the shit away. i was expecting to get something good and freaky, like purple, but no. the pop qwiz failed me. how disappointing.

Chestnuts roasted by macks @ 01/16/2004 01:38 PM EST

I think the host said that his name was Play-Doh or something similar at the very beginning. Plus, it wasn't the host of the Barbershop who did the superkick. If anything, Ted would have had to superkick Mike through the plate glass window, to the horror and bad acting of Play-Doh, and leave with Kate as his manager who would then sing a crappy version of his theme song, only to be replaced on vocals by Ted himself, with the new song being Ted's trademark for years to come. Duh.

Yeah, it got "overcooked" a lot. Not necessarily burned, but it tasted a little burnt. Yuck. I think of it every so often, but nobody else I know remembers it.
I think that if they offered "Pop Qwiz" today (possibly under a different name), it would do rather well. You know, with the colored ketchup (or 'catsup', whatever), fries, etc. I guess kids love that stuff.

Oaul, dammit, I ended up with Dr. Pepper on my screen from the trips comment :) God knows it's true too. God and JR.
I like randomness. Random is good. I also like the idea of being able to register my name. My biggest fear is that someone will jump register it before me. Then I will have to seek them out and sic kingklash on them.
Pop Qwiz tasted like dye flavored popcorn. Crystal Pepsi tasted like um...not Pepsi. Remember the crystal gravy commercial parody on SNL? That was funny sheit, that.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/16/2004 03:09 PM EST

I remember this popcorn. I used to eat it all the time, and I was sad that the store no longer had it. But I was content with non-colored popcorn afterwards.

Chestnuts roasted by JG! @ 01/16/2004 03:30 PM EST

Me, I don't think adding a message board will hinder random people comming to the site. Many times when I'm searching for obscure things on google theonly links i get are mb threads. and besides how many other sites have articles on pop qwiz? With just this one article matt probably has the largest ammount of pop qwiz information on the net.

Anyway its pretty useless to argue about MB sicne matt has not definetively said he was going to bring them back or not.

It must be a real insult to the great philospher Plato to have his name used (without compensation) for some shitty gimmick of the early 90's. Plato was the hybrid of every cheesy, white host of every short-lived kid's game show from 1980-91, Kinda like a fucked up Voltron or something. I can happily say that I'm no longer in the realm of eating things just because theres a new color.

But one is never too old to try something if there is a new flava. This past year has been quite a ride for new flavors. Blueberry Pepsi, the vanila cola wars, some kinda Hersheys S'mores bar thingy, not to mention more Frito and Dorito flavors than you can shack a stick at or kill a mule with.

Whats next?? I say new flavors for Hostess Fruit Pies. Lets try beef and root beer.

I do remember that Pop Qwiz commercial, and well, but I know we never had it. We've never had a microwave. The only time I've ever had a microwave was once in high school when I took a cooking class (the tomato surprise me and a partner made ended up being tomato mush) and in college when my roomies claimed they couldn't live without one. I have a popcorn maker; it's not as quick, but more fun and probably better for you (you can put as little or as much butter, salt, and anything else on).

There was a small store in Cape May during the 90s that made colored, flavored popcorn varieties. They weren't bad, but the junk was waaaaaayyyy too expensive for what was primarily weird flavorings and dye. I tried them once or twice and they weren't anything special. All their product, no matter what flavor it claimed to be, tasted like weird-colored caramel popcorn. That store hasn't been there in years. I forget what it is now (it WAS an ice cream parlor).

Millions of children have grown up believing that the true color of raspberry is blue. Seriously. My friend's kid is 11 and I brought some raspgerries over there once and she didn't believe me or her mom that they were raspberries because they were red, not blue. Damn food dyes.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/18/2004 04:58 PM EST

I ate that nasty popcorn many times. It was always half burnt and super salty. So gross.

Chestnuts roasted by double d @ 01/18/2004 08:30 PM EST

I fondy remember this stuff, although I never got to try it. I did however look for it stores until I was about 11. Considering the ad came on when I was about 6, that's a lot of wishful thinking about green popcorn.

They're not?! * 0_0 *

I remember this commercial, but I never had any. And that's mostly because I never asked for any at the grocery store. Why, you ask? Simply this: I fucking hate popcorn!

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 01/20/2004 09:01 PM EST

I remember this, but don't think I ever bought more than one box. If I recall correctly, I really wanted blue but didn't get it.

Oh, and since someone brought up Kit Kats, the British version of the Kit Kat is the greatest candy bar I've ever had. I dunno if they have the orange Kit Kats here, but the orange Brit Kat is amazingly good.

Killer Duck, yes, I mean the air popper. I love that thing. It was a birthday present my second year in college. At the very least, it amuses my brother when he visits. : 0 )

I nearly spit my breakfast all over my monitor when I saw this article come up a few days ago. All the time when I come here and see something from my childhood and think "Oh my god, I remember that" when I haven't thought about it in years.

But the Pop Qwiz thing is without a doubt something that has not poped into my head for over 10 years. I remember being interested when I saw the commercial on TV, and like many others I wanted to try it.

So we picked some up at the store and made it at home. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they only come in boxes of 3? Anyway, I also had the burning problem, I wonder if it was the dye they used. That was the first and last time I ever had Pop Qwiz.

I had hoped to repress this commercial. Horrible commercial that made me laugh but not because it was funny. This, however, did not stop me from buying this "stuff". Ditto on the burning. I had one bag of it as I gave the others away which was difficult because most of my friends already had bags they didn't want. Only takers were the ones who had never had it. Poor chaps.

I loved it how it said WRONG! haha, I was laughing for days.

Chestnuts roasted by Bek @ 01/26/2004 09:15 PM EST

Because of this commercial my little brother used to squeal "TASTES SO BUTTERY!" after he farted. Lotsa laughs unless you had friends over.

I realize my brother is probably reading this, as he's a sucker for these kinds of websites too. Sup, David.

Oh I remember this stuff very vividly. I saw it, and I HAD to have it.

I asked my mom in the nicest tone possible (or possibly a whining, screeching squeal... give me a break, I don't remember the actual event), "Mom, can I please have some of that cool colored popcorn?", and the answer was, of course, "No. There's no difference between that and regular popcorn except the color."

My mom's always been cool about exposing the bullshit advertising schemes to my sisters and me, even when we were little, but she just didn't get it. I REALLY wanted some. And finally, just ONCE, we bought one of the over-priced packs. And the popcorn was good (I think I got purple).

Oh man, Matt, it's almost 5 in the morning, I'm a flat broke college student with no car, I'm hungry as hell, and you HAD to bring up the Ninja Turle slime-filled pies. My teeth hurt (in a good way) just THINKING about eating another one of those.

I believe I only ate one of those, too. But oh MAN, remember those Ninja Turtles cookies, like one half of an Oreo covered in a green icing turtle shell?! I ate a whole box of those and watched Dick Tracy over and over again at my uncle's house. OH GOD those were good!

Whenever I see anythng involving multicolor food, I see that Spongebob cartoon where he invented "the Pretty Pattie." It was Krabby Patties in diffrent colors in the end though, it turned everyone into the colors they ate.

Holy shit! Yes I remember that crap! Just yesterday, i was thinking about it and asked someof my friends if they remember it, but when i mention it, people look at me like i have lobsters crawling out of my pants. I could have sworn that the purple tasted better than any other color.

Chestnuts roasted by r-dawg-oi @ 02/04/2004 12:41 PM EST

omg, i love that stuff, even though i wish they still made it, i doubt they ever will, i wish they'd bring back the drink orbitz by clearly canadian too, that and the funny colored popcorn was the best stuff ever

Chestnuts roasted by saabguy @ 02/14/2004 02:03 PM EST

my love for pop qwiz is undying. i would pay large sums of money to get a fresh box of it. god how i miss how everything in the late-80s/early-90s was neon!

I thought that crap was so cool when i was a kid! my mom made me guess which color it was before i ate it

Pop Qwiz popcorn holds a dear moment in time for me. I was at my best friend's house and we decided to cook a bag of it in her parent's brand new microwave. I was used to my parent's microwave where you had to heat the bag for 5 minutes to get it to cook... not in her new one... no, it only took 3 minutes, But being 8, five minutes seemed like the right amount of time. I guess Purple and she guess green (I think). Anyway, the popcorn caught fire and set off the smoke detector and everything. Thankfully her father snatched the flaming bag from my hands and ran into the snow outside. When he came back in we asked him what color the popcorn was. He didn't look too happy when he told us it was black.

Yep I remember Pop Qwiz popcorn quite well...as a matter of fact I saw the
commercial for it not too long ago on an old tape of TV shows from back in '91!
I never ate the stuff, but I loved the TMNT Turtle (or Sewer??) Pies -- I can
still remember the taste of those and it's making me hungry for one right now!

I'm glad I saved all the special TMNT II movie cards and stickers from the pies
- I still have those to this day!

Chestnuts roasted by Strike @ 05/08/2004 09:49 AM EST

I used to eat that stuff all the time when I was younger! but then again I was old enough to buy it for myself too... But for some odd reason I had that little kid mentality that certain colors "tasted better" than others...Like my favorite colors somehow contained more butter than the others...How many colors were there? I know of at least four (purple, blue, red, green) but I think there was oarnge too?

I find it funny that they punish the girl for getting her answer wrong, but the guy who gets his wrong gets off scott free.

And props to the people who mentioned the host's name. Plato. Ha Ha Ha. Now that's a name.

Oh my gosh....I always mention to my sister, you know, when we have nothing else to do, "Do you remember we used to get this colored popcorn? And there were these commercials where kids had to guess the color?" And she never remembered. BUT I DID!! AND SOMEONE ELSE DID TO!! Ha. Alright, so a bit of my childhood was not forgotten. I used to LOVE that popcorn. I always, ALWAYS would try to guess...all my sibling would wait around the table, holding thier breath, while I yelled "RED!", ripped the bag open, and there was.....blue popcorn. Yeah, I hardly ever got the color right, but since it came out in 1991 - making me 5 - I couldn't ever figure out why I was always wrong. Also, the yellow color sucked, cause it wasn't a REAL color - just an extra-bright butter color. Blue was my favorite....I think I also liked the purple.

Woah, I specifically came here to search for Pop Kwiz to see if anyone else remembered it! Lucky me. Anyhoo, I remember one particular batch that came out good, but it was purple and I was all set to throw it away because I thought it was scorched. I was about seven or eight when it came out and was CONVINCED that this popcorn was the King of all popcorns. Hey, it was neon colored! Of course it tastes better... right?
