12/31/2003 Entry: "New Article: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cereal!"

Here's a new article that expands on something touched on in a previous one -- the full tribute to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cereal! I love the fact that it existed, and bought it several times, but I don't care what anyone says -- this stuff just wasn't tasty. Especially when you open up a box that's been sitting around for fourteen years, which I do in this article. Commercial download is included, along with a short story about Michaelangelo's trip to the grocery store. New design is alllmost finished, so I'll link this one off the main page once it's done.

First Post! Woo Hoo!

Anyway, I remember this stuff, and the commercial for it where shredder wanted the cereal. Pretty awesome.

Oh yeah, and Ralston always put those fucking little Rice Chex in their short-lived cereals. In Spider-Man Cereal, they were referred to as "Spider-Webs." Actually, come to think of it, hose weren't Rice Chex. They were Crispix instead. But I loved it. They even included a limited edition trading card which were really just the fronts from the ClearChrome inserts from the '95 Fleer Ultra Spidey set and the backs were from the regular cards from the same exact trading card set (I'm still looking for 14 cards from that set).

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 12/31/2003 05:14 PM EST

Does anyone else remember the Ninja Turtles green taffy, I think it's name had "Ooze" in the title? Man, did I love that stuff. And, I'm pretty sure it was touched on, the Turtles' Pasta, that was so horrendous, my sister is still afraid to talk about it.

Chestnuts roasted by Rob @ 12/31/2003 05:21 PM EST

What about the Tenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pies? They were like those tiny one-person fruit pies that they always have in convenience stores, only the filling was some weird neon green creme instead of fruit. I don't remember what they tasted like, but you could tell everyone that they were "turtle pies" and that the filling was, therefore mashed turtle, and that way nobody else would want to eat them, so you wouldn't have to share.

I still think they should have made TMNT turtle soup :) I remember those damn gree filled pies. Never bought one. They looked like snot pies. Hey kids pick a winner! I remember the pasta too. I think I saw some recently. Scary.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 12/31/2003 06:31 PM EST

We still have a Raphael bowl from the cereal. The Michelangelo goes shopping story was great. You should write children's books, Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by marioshoku @ 12/31/2003 07:12 PM EST

I remember those pies, they were fucking good too. God that cereal takes me back, I lived off that stuff. Hey is anyone else having problems downloading the commercial? It just links me back to the main page...

Chestnuts roasted by The Dude @ 12/31/2003 07:55 PM EST

I just realized I still have that bowl and was still eating out of it no more than two years ago. Unfortunatly the thing wore down enough to get a big crack along the side of it, so now its purely for decoration. The other day going through some of my old toys and what-not I found a bunch of my old TMNT cards, not from the movie but the tv show, wonder if they have any value...

Chestnuts roasted by The Dude @ 12/31/2003 07:58 PM EST

Dude, check eBay to see if people are selling the cards and what prices they are getting. You could also look through a search engine. I know of several places online that handle trading cards but none that do cartoon cards. Of course, I have never looked for cartoon cards before. Also see who manufactured the cards (like Wizards of the Coast) and see if they have a price guide. Lots of manufacturers do.

Random: I don't like that bubbly rounded font thingy that's made a few appearances on X-E this week. Not a good typeface.

I mean, it's not like a font's going to diminish my enjoyment of the articles...but (in the words of the horse from Ren and Stimpy) "No sir, I don't like it."

Chestnuts roasted by Monster Dog @ 12/31/2003 10:16 PM EST

Here I sit on New Year's Eve stuck at work and I find this new article and it just makes me bust a gut in laughter, especially this line....

"To ward off their enemies, the Turtles use nets. Ninja Nets. Just like in the cereal! It's continuity like this that makes George Lucas and wrestling promoters blush with shame."

Classic stuff!

Chestnuts roasted by I.C. Veena @ 01/01/2004 12:20 AM EST

I tried the cereal, and I didn't care for it. I at least got one with a bowl, which I used to eat BBQ corn chips out of. I don't have it anymore,I think it broke years ago,and thus disposed of it.

I loved those turtle pies! That's one bit of TMNT merchandise I'd like to see make a comeback.

Chestnuts roasted by Overlord @ 01/01/2004 12:41 AM EST

I remember those pies and when they were on the royal jello box to promote thier secret of the ooze movie.

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 01/01/2004 01:32 AM EST

Happy New Year, everyone.

Chestnuts roasted by Marshall @ 01/01/2004 02:53 AM EST

The pies were standard Bavarian Creme Pies, which you can go out and buy anyway. The normally yellow filling was just coloured green. Another notable food mention were the Turtles Ice Cream Head pops. The sticks even had the signatures of one of the four Ninja Turtles (I still own some of those stupid sticks). If I'm not mistaken, there was also a color-changing Turtles cup that came shrink-wrapped onto Turtles cereal in the latter part of its run. I still drink out of that cup for fun. Good times.

Chestnuts roasted by Tadashi @ 01/01/2004 04:52 AM EST

Oh... but I forgot to mention that Creme Pies came with a trading card... so that was key. That's what really made me want those things.

Chestnuts roasted by Tadashi @ 01/01/2004 04:54 AM EST

Finally got a chance to finish the Advent countdown. What a brilliant culmination. It's silly, but all the old commercials and snowman adventures really screamed "CHRISTMAS" in the sea of nondenominational blandness of the rest of the season.

Just wanted to wish everybody a happy new year, and specifically another successful year to Matt and X-E.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 01/01/2004 06:59 AM EST

Oddly enough, I had one of those Ninja Turtle bowls and had my pet drink out of it.

Though he was a rabbit and never actually drank out of it. We filled it with water and he crapped in it. That was the only place he would crap, too.

Talk about a fan.

Chestnuts roasted by Sirkus Peanuts @ 01/01/2004 12:33 PM EST

They've brought back the Ninja Turtles Ice Cream Popsicles, you know. And they still have those bubble gum eyes. The only thing is, so far, I've only seen Michelangelo in terms of the color of headband ice cream that they have. (I'm probably the only person on this blog who's ever used the term "headband ice cream" and perhaps the only person on the entire internet. I think I'll go onto Google and find out.)

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 01/01/2004 01:04 PM EST

Nope. I even tried several variations on the phrase such as "head band ice cream" and nothing came up. Guess I'm just too unique. Although there is the possibility that there are sites that Google hasn't picked up yet in which the phrase is written, but I'd doubt it.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 01/01/2004 01:08 PM EST

I STILL have a box of this stuff. Empty, but hey, you only really wanted to collect the box anyway. Mine had an offer for a TMNT poster and a video. "Invasion of the Punk Rock Frogs." All offers end December 31st, 1990.

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Mr. Mr. @ 01/01/2004 01:12 PM EST

I wonder where Matt got a tiny shopping cart from.

Chestnuts roasted by i was a lion @ 01/01/2004 01:37 PM EST

Damn, looks like you're a little late there, Mr. Mr. Mr. Too bad, because that sounds like an awesome offer.

Another turtles thing I remember is the fruit snacks that Farley's came out with. They were nice and gummy, and my grandma always got them for me as a snack when I came to her house everyday after school. I used to always make them do battles, and the dead ones would get eaten. Of course, the bad guys always lost, and so I'd just eat the good guys after the battle as sort of reward ceremony for their good deeds. For awhile, I did something similar with Super Mario Bros. Cookies, but the laughing and teasing from other kids at the lunchroom table got me to quit.

Anything Ninja Turtles is AWESOME. I'd love to see a review of the video game-- the arcade version, the oldschool NES version, anything. If he does the NES version, we better get a taste of that crazy secret level in the sewers. You know, where there's the guy made of fire, and big frog guys, and little things hopping around that look like legs? Aw hell, I've got to find that game again.
Anyhow, I hope we get a break from cereals for a while. When you find out about every holiday cereal ever and then it's followed up by TMNT cereal, you start to go a little nuts.

Chestnuts roasted by Christian D @ 01/01/2004 03:39 PM EST

Christian-Are you referring to the place where you can fight Napoleon Bonafrog? Anyway, if you want that game, I'm sure there are plenty of places where you can download the ROM.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 01/01/2004 03:48 PM EST

Ok, first off, Happy New Year to Matt and all bloggers! I hope all of you had a great night and actually remember having a great night. ; 0 ) I spent New Year's Eve eating home-made pizza and cake and watching "Perfect Strangers" with a friend I don't often get to see.

I recall all of the TMNT stuff everyone's mentioned. I don't remember ever having the toys, but we may have tried the cereal (or my sisters may have, since I've never liked cereal with marshmallows) and certainly had the fruit snacks and pasta many times. I don't think I ever had the pie. And I do remember the cereal commercial! I thought the thing with the nets was funny as a kid.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 01/01/2004 08:42 PM EST

i was a lion-Craft stores like Micheal's and Hobby Lobby carry stuff like that miniature shopping cart, which is where I assume Matt got his. They carry all kinds of miniature stuff small enough for action figures to use,i.e fast food cups, books, food, you name it they got it.

The part about using donatello's lazer gone to turn raph into a cereal bowl made me unable to form coherent thought or sentences for quite sometime. matt how did u look at the bowl and think that? that was bloody hilarious.

Is it alright to admit I actually liked this cereal when I was little?

Chestnuts roasted by Josh @ 01/02/2004 04:16 AM EST

i wasnt really interested in TMNT, partly cause it was aimed at boys and cause i was too young. or old. i dont know. its all a blur.

but we did see the TMNT movie @ the drive-in (the one where they were in real-life, not the cartoon) and the one thing i do remember, is how scary those turtles costumes looked. i mean look at the eyes and teeth, man! *shudders*

Chestnuts roasted by Rachel Cakes @ 01/02/2004 04:19 AM EST

i hated any cereal with anything remotely resembling chex, but i still ate boxes of this crap... in my opinion, count chocula will forever be king of cereal.

Chestnuts roasted by phillip @ 01/02/2004 06:48 AM EST

This stuff was great. I remembered looking for this stuff like it was crack. I thought that this was just a fad, but I found that when Ralston resurrected the cereal in the form of Spider-Man, I went on the hunt once again. Also, I remember the rice nets being pretty tasty.

GODDAMN! I LOVED ME THEM NINJA TURTLE PUDDIN' PIES! I have to admit the neon green color they were coated with will ultimately be my demise, but I swear for like a week straight my neighbor and I ate nothing but those turtle tumors. I secretly pray for the day they return albeit in another form ala ecto cooler!

think turtles pies were bad? in the UK Asda (now owened by Wal Mart) supermarkets sold Turtle Pizza covered with ice cream and marshmellows!

anyone know more about this as i did try and erase this thought from my mind!

P.S.- Yeah, them pies were dope~

lucky americans and their white milk.

I remember the cereal pretty well. The ninja nets were gross, but the marshmellows were pretty good. Looking back on eating this stuff makes me wonder if we'll all develop some kind of gulf war syndrome kind of condition. It couldn't have been good for us.

I was 11... gimme a break. :)

Hey, Turtle cereal was GOOD! I loved that stuff. I considered myself to old to be into collecting Turtles stuff, but I watched the cartoon and ate the cereal. I was my favorite cereal for a while. It wasn't to sweat, had good rice chex, and the turtle and weapon shaped bits balanced it a bit. I actually miss this cereal, to bad it didn't have a bigger box.

Chestnuts roasted by pecosdave @ 01/16/2004 01:54 PM EST

Man alive, I remember that stuff.... it was sort of like an UBER-SWEET lucky charms...the best part about it was that I used to take a dry bowl of the stuff while watching Saturday morning cartoons, pick all the marshmallowy bits out, and using only the power of my prepubescent hands, compress them into a giant multicolored jawbreaker-ish thing. After cartoons were over and the saturday morning educational crap came on, I'd run around outside sucking on the marshmallowy wad for hours. Good times.

It's really funny that I came across this. Back in the day the Turtles cereal had a contest where all you had to do was buy the box and open it to see if you won. What did you win? 6 large Fedex boxes of the oldest, latest, and exclusive Ninja Turtle toys. Well I never win anything, but I kept bothering my mom to get me box after box. And one day, I won. My mom never believed me until I showed her the certificate. To this day I still love the Turtles and that was the only thing I won in my life.
