10/09/2003 Entry: "New Article: The Monster In My Pocket Cartoon!"

You might've noticed those neon creatures gracing the left-side column on the main page -- they're "Monster In My Pocket" figures, a pretty popular toy collection that gave us a false sense of security that the 90s were gonna be a great decade for playthings. I loved the beasts, and as I recently discovered, they even had a cartoon. Here's the review, complete with an animated picture of lead villain, "Vampire," eating a pile of garlic and spewing evil orange breath across a suburban kitchen. Even Ripley doesn't believe it. I thought it was decent, but obviously, the idea didn't catch on enough to inspire any kind of regular series -- this seems to be the only "episode" available, but for what it's worth, the video came with a free, glow-in-the-dark MIMP figure. Two-colored! 100 point value! Mega super! Oh, and the Halloween Countdown just landed its most recent addition: Crayola's Halloween Crayons!

I always loved Monster In My Pocket, simply because it's acronym is MIMP. They're just something so satisfying about saying "MIMP."

I'm insane! Whee!

So is it weird that when I was a little kid I had probably 10 of these things? Does that question make a bit more(less?) sense when I add that I am a female?

I might also add that the Kool Aid FAQ was the biggest waste of a lot of people's time. EVER. "I experimented and found out the best means for tie-dying my bedsheets with Kool-Aid !^_^" People should be slain..

I first got TVLand in 1997, and I really miss the cool format they had before they decided to get Tim Conway to do announcements and turn themselves into a bland TBS wannabe. Back in the days of Twip I loved when they would regularly showcase "The Wonders of TVLand" -- episodes of offbeat short lived shows that they would present ether for stars before-they-were-stars (Sandra Bollack in "Working Girl - The Sitcom"), shows that were killed before their time ("The Associates", "Buffalo Bill", "Best of the West") or shows that were just plain wacky/stupid ("Dusty's Trail" - which literally was "Gilligan's Island" set in the old west complete with Bob Denver.) Now its all just reruns upon reruns of shows you've seen a million times before with only one or two shows worthy of its past ("Square Pegs", "Fernwood Tonight") Anyway, two of the shows mentioned on your top 11 list were shown during their recent tribute to John Ritter, "Three's a Crowd" and "The Ropers". I remember they at one point (probably to promote the BB movies) were showing every version of Brady Bunch, and showcasing spin-offs showed both "Top of the Heap" and "The Tortellis". Sorry to go on so long, and i realize it IS a business and if that format had been profitable they would have kept it, but it just seems like such a waste to put all that effort into giving your network a unique look and feel, just to throw it all away and become the "Gilligan's Island Channel". At the very least I wish they'd bring back "Phil Silvers", "Addams Familly", "Hogan's Heroes" and "Green Acres".

Monster in My Pocket (screenplay, in progress, currently 251 pages)
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/scottandrewh/mimpfilm.html
Were my eyes being deceived? No, Mr. Scott Andrew Hutchins has his dream cast and crew already plotted out for his own live-action adaptation of what, in my humble opinion, was little more than a poor knock-off of M.U.S.C.L.E. Now I do realize that the internet is full of dream casts for movies, but Mr. Hutchins gets an "Honorary Bitner Award for Non-Linear Life Path" by casting in his dream movie the likes of Grant Shaud (Murphy Brown), Philip Glass, Arsenio Hall, Charlotte Church, David L. Lander (Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley), LeVar Burton, Billy Connolly (Head of the Class), and of course Ewan McGregor as the voice of Loch Ness Monster.

Matt, not to be a downer on this already upbeat post but you goofed on the crayons pic. The picture says "Midnight Gloom" but you called it "Midnight Blue". Oh well, too much Kool Aid I guess.

Just to make things more spooky (or to make annoying children cry) serve them a cup of your Kool-Aid mix and say it's Kool-Aid Man's Blood, freshly squeezed from his corpse you have in the basement....AHHHHH!!!!! Or not.

Chestnuts roasted by Lumberjack Matt @ 10/09/2003 05:46 AM EST

Wow, I'm glad I didn't have to be the downer... That makes me happy.

I love crayons too. I never got crayons for halloween...

Hmmm. I could have sworn this cartoon WAS a regular series, one that lasted, um, like a week. I remember seeing it on television for a while. Or maybe I was dreaming.

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Mr. Mr. @ 10/09/2003 09:39 AM EST

Hmm, maybe I should score some crayons and pretzels for the onslaught of kids I will have this holiday season. Hmm, wait, they know where I live. This bribe has to last a WHOLE YEAR. Maybe the crayons and some candy. Any trick-or-treators going to Matts house are going to make the hell out. He is going to have what like 300 bucks in halloween handing out merchandise?

Chestnuts roasted by spazzamatic @ 10/09/2003 10:19 AM EST

I hope the new chainsaw movie doesn't suck. There's been alot of
non frightening horrow flicks out for halloween. I wanna have the shit scared outta me with this one.
Monster in my pocket? Nope.
There's a one eyed monster in my pants though. Ha ha ha...
not funny? fuck off then...

MIMP...i had a few mimps but mostly battle beasts.

another MIMP is Monster in my Pants by The B-52's. Great music video.

The lead villan, 'Vampire', had a over-sized red magic ring that hypnotized people? Is that in anyway related to the ring in the countdown or just a weird coincidence?

Chestnuts roasted by sharkie @ 10/09/2003 02:16 PM EST

oh the possibilties of a hypnotizing ring. one can only imagine...

"Saved By The Bell: The New Class" (1993-2000)

^ certainly that series of the show wasn't on for 7 years?? the version that didn't have zack in it?

Chestnuts roasted by dallashiphop.com @ 10/09/2003 03:14 PM EST

Man, I used to be big into the MIMP when I was a kid, but this video seems pretty boring in comparision. So very MIMP, so little plot, not very interesting. I find it hard that I would care about this if I was still a kid.

Oh, and Matt, what was the super-speical figure?!? We want to know!!

Chestnuts roasted by Evan @ 10/09/2003 03:50 PM EST

The bonus figure was actually Wolf-Mon, as seen in the toon. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/09/2003 03:55 PM EST

I first found out about this show from an ad on those old old old Dragonball (not Z, the better one) videos. It scarred me for life.

Chestnuts roasted by I can't remember my name... @ 10/09/2003 04:24 PM EST

Believe it or nor, according to IMDB.com, Saved By the Bell: The New Class really did last 7 season. God help us all.

Help me out here: for years and years and years, I was absolutely convinced that there was a sequel to the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown special. Did I just hallucinate or dream that?

Chestnuts roasted by Hellpop! @ 10/09/2003 07:59 PM EST

Man I used to love MIMP, I probably had 30 or so except I always got the same ones like the mad scientist.

Chestnuts roasted by Byrd_man85 @ 10/09/2003 08:44 PM EST

Had? Man, I've still got 2 MIMPs. One is the 5-headed hydra dude, and the other is the short dude with the big hands. Honestly, I know why this toy line tanked... the toys were too small and easy to steal. I remember nabbing one of those 25-pointers from Target when I was younger.

Chestnuts roasted by Praj @ 10/09/2003 09:52 PM EST

Oddly enough, I did know there was a Monster in My Pocket cartoon, though I never got a chance to see it. I think a friend had a copy, or something. This was another line that my sisters and I would pick up from time to time but weren't really into collecting. I think the whole MIMP/M.U.S.C.L.E/C.U.T.I.E thing passed us by...not to mention they tended to get stretched out and pulled apart rather easily.

I'm not happy with Nick-at-Nite myself these days. They yanked off my favorite of their current shows, "Perfect Strangers," without so much as a warning, and never gave it a close to decent timelslot. They've chopped up their slots for "Cheers" and "Three's Company" and have skipped episodes of both. I have nothing against "Cosby Show" or "Roseanne," and I have warm memories of "Full House," but they don't need to be run into the ground.

I don't know if there's a sequal to the Peanuts Halloween special, but there is a Peanuts Christmas sequal. While it's no where close to the classic "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown" isn't bad if you can get your hands on a copy. It starts slow, but ends with Peppermint Patty, Sally, and Marcie getting some nice Christmas pageant gags. I used to watch it at my college's media center every Christmas (don't ask me what a college media center was doing with a copy of one of the lesser Peanuts special).

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 10/09/2003 09:58 PM EST

I agree with mr. mr. mr. I also remember that being a series possibly run on ABC. I remember seeing the one you reviewed as a weekend special for about 5 years running on ABC around halloween time.

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 10/09/2003 10:05 PM EST

I'm with you, Starwenn. I actually like the older eps of Roseanne a lot, and Full House doesn't feel as grating as it did way back then, but they took off some good shows to chuck these in. I'm pretty tired of Cosby and was never big on Cheers -- if I had it my way, Family Ties and Perf Stra would be in better slots. (they're still there, by the way...just on terribly late with Head of the Class reruns)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/09/2003 10:12 PM EST

I seem to remember a MIMP series... it would've been a Saturday morning cartoon. I vaguely remember the opening theme and a scene where a boy pulls the mummy, frankenstein's monster and dracula from his pocket.... something about a glowing jewel too. It's all hazy, but I can swear I remember the opening theme.

Chestnuts roasted by Sheep @ 10/10/2003 02:19 AM EST

You know, I never had MIMP because I lived under the impression that anything monster associated would turn me into a Satan-worshiping little boy, yet I know I had the MIMP poster that showcased the whole line. Every day I would look at that poster and wonder about the fun things I would do with MIMPs of my very own. Still, I was so afraid then of becoming Devil Jr I never asked for any.

Matt, I see that you've correctly labeled Frankenstein's Monster as not Frankenstein. As much as I aplaud this I still feel a kind of sadness. You didn't do this just to please literary nazis, did you?

And to close this comment, my shrunken head apple has greatly dwarfed in size and is no longer of any interest to me. I had no idea my salt and instant coffee juice had that kind of ability. Maybe this will solve America's garbage problem.

Chestnuts roasted by inkmage @ 10/10/2003 09:03 AM EST

are you a liar because you'd never destroy the video or because it's NOT the only light blue video you own?

The sad thing is, I still have the entire first series of MIMP proudly displayed on a shelf in my room. I remember my Christian mother throwing a tantrum over the 25 point Great Beast, since he was supposedly the Great Beast from the Book Of Revelations.

Any of you guys ever have that big-ass MIMP mountain thingy? It was made out of this super-cheap plastic and had a slot for each of the original 70 or so figures. The idea was to hang it on the wall with the figures in it as sort of a 3-D poster. I only had a fourth of the figures that were meant to go in the thing, and it still fell off the wall constantly. It might have been a mail-in deal or something...which makes me wonder why I had it, since I was never THAT into MIMPs...

Chestnuts roasted by FishEyekun @ 10/12/2003 07:22 PM EST

I remember the Monsters in My Pocket. I liked the giant ass 25 packs that K-Mart would sell. Largely because even at 10 years old I was a lazy piece of crap who didn't want to have to go back to the store every single week. I hated the video game though.

I never heard of the video or maybe I did and have since forgotten about it years later. Given my alcoholic nature I'd say the latter is more likely the case.

I really think kids of today are really getting the shaft in terms of toys. In fact it's almost so bad that they had to bring back stuff from the `80s.

Chestnuts roasted by The Adamantium Elbow @ 10/13/2003 12:13 AM EST

Does anyone remember a cartoon called the "Drac Pack"? They weren't miniture but they were teenage versions of Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein's Monster who were good and faced off against an evil Vampirella and her toad-like assistant. Can't remember much beyond that.

Hi I remember MIMP and have since got my whole (and huge collection) out of the attic for my niece. I loved the little fellows specially since I'm very read up on my myths etc...however after being handed several of these lil guys I began to get stumped on what...or who they were!!! (specially in the 3rd edition where I think they just made up half of the creatures!!!) Anyway point of this post is to ask if anyone knows if there is a list of what each beastie was just so I can do some research into who they were! Just to add I had the mountains my main problem was my mum changing my bed...cos the cheapo plastic was cheap the thing would move and most of the lil guys would fall off...only ghost and behemoth didn't! Also I had the board game which used the MIMP's as playing pieces. Can remember collecting those things non-stop (even if I had the whole set I'd buy more just to see if I could get a better colour or whatever!!!) but stopped when they started bringing out "insects in my pocket" and think they went down the dinosaur route too!
