09/11/2003 Entry: "New Article: "My Best Friend Is A Vampire" Movie Review!"

Pig Blood. Lite.Wow, that took forever. Here's a 100,000 word review of My Best Friend Is A Vampire, a 1988 flick that casts Robert Sean Leonard as a you-know-what. I would've saved it for closer to Halloween, but really, it's not all that spooky. To make the incredibly long story short: it ain't no Lost Boys, but I've always liked it. It's 4 AM now, and that usually means I should go to sleep. I think I'm gonna believe in that "usually" part. Goodnight, I'll be back tomorrow with that Dr. Catheter trading card I promised you the other day. I promise. Again.

Well, I don't know about a *doctor*, but one of Rene Auberjonis's lesser-known roles was that of the voice of Louis, the crazed fish-gutting chef from The Little Mermaid. I'm not sure how well that fits together. Except that 'Louis' has an 'o' in it.

I'm really glad that I'm not first post this time and risk getting my beating heart torn out of my chest and eaten before my stillbeating eyes by Hellpop, but I have this to say: Matt you're not alone in having absolutely no attraction to Darla, and you know why? I'll tell you why, she looks just like Gozer from Ghostbusters, that man-cut screams only one message to me, "Are you a god? . . . Then YA!!!" (or is it "DIE!"?)

That Ralph guy, wasn't he Skippy or Scooter or Scooper or Skitter in Family Ties? I think I'm wrong, but just perhaps . . .

David Warner has placed himself as character actor of all time one notch above Tim Curry and because of one roll in particular, Ra's Al Ghul in the animated Batman.

I used to get this movie confused with Jim Carrey's "Once Bitten" with the guy from "Blazing Saddles."

Ever noticed how when you see a really ugly person, you never really think " oh they're extremely ugly"? It's just kind of a normal thing for you to see.
But when you see someone who could have been attractive but has one or two screwed up features you just keep dwelling on them and can't stop praying for god to grant you the gift of temporary blindness, or a handy dandy paper bag?

I think there was a point to all of this when i started to write it, but it's slipped my mind. Oh yes. now i remember. Darla is Ugly #2.

My first thought when I saw Modoc..."Holy it's Clayton Endicott III from Benson!". Seriously, I'm not much on Sci-Fi so that was my Modoc Moment.

The subplot with Jeremy's rent's thinking He's Gay is a riot, especially when they try reading books on the subject. Yes Matt we didn't need the "mirrors must be broken" vidcaps. Sorry, but you still rock cuz you gave big ups to Wendy's.

Yeah, celluloid ain't doing Darla any favours. Still, if you had to see her or Kathy Bates' tits. . .well, you judge for yourself. By the way, nice Kathy Bates aside. But when/what movie did Kathy Bates show her tits/in?

Good review, I'll have to look in to renting this movie sometime. On the subject of halloween things, does anyone know the name of that pumpkin gum? It looked like a jack-o-lantern and you had to lay it on a table and slap the piss out of it to break it up into chewable sized pieces.

...For the record, you can't spell "Modoc" without "Odo."...

OK, now THAT'S FUNNY.

...Can't spell it without "doc," either. Did Rene play any doctors? Anyone??...

Only other role I can think of his at the moment is a Reverened from "The Patriot". I'm too lazy to check out IMDb. And, by "The Patriot", I mean the Mel Gibson vehicle, not the flick with Mafioso Don Steven Seagal. HBO likes to confuse you by throwing that one your way at 3AM.

Let's see...

He was Dr. Eugene Lyons in the 1977 mini series "The Rhinemann Exchange"

He did the voice for Dr. Strangesnork for the cartoon "The Snorks"

He did the voice for Dr. Stanley Kirby for the cartoon "Mighty Max"

He played Dr. Burton in "Batman Forever"

Round it off, he did the voice for Dr. Ignatio Mobius in the game "Command & Conquer"

That's a lot of doctors.

This movie is on Comedy Central all the time. So you really don't have to bother renting it.

Also, the best part of the movie was the license plate of the car that Modoc gave to Jer. If memory serves me correctly, I believe it said "Niteman" or something to that extent. As if that wasn't clue enough to Leopold that good old Ralphie wasn't the vampire they were after.

And by the way, Ralph is MY best friend.

I thought of a great review for Halloween. Punky Brewster's Halloween Special. Back in the day I had this serious crush on the girl because I had a dream that I visited (well, this is going to sound idiotic, but remember I was a kid)--you know how at the end of the show they asked kids to mail letters to the Punky Brewster Post Office? I thought that was like a real place, that there was a post office of just Punky Brewster stuff--anyway, her Halloween special involved the three main characters walking through an old Indian cave and being chased by a really bad special effects tarantula that used to scare the crap out of me. Then there was this guy they called Mr. Pieces who had his arm coming out of one rock, his head out of another, his arm . . . and so on. It was a two-parter and really had its moments. But that raises another question: where is Punky Brewster on X-E? What's the deal Matt, did you just hate the girl or something? Did you find her color coordination offensive? But I suppose there's plenty of great old shows you never wrote about. (Silver Spoons) A mage can dream, though, a mage can dream.

I've been looking for a copy of this movie for over ten years! Well, not really actively intensely searching everywhere for it, but I will look for it if I'm in a used tape or pawn shop and I remember the movie exsists. I remember watching this movie when it came out on video. I only ever watched it once. I really liked it. Of course I also remember really liking another movie in the undead-teen comedy genre called My Boyfriend's Back. Then I got a copy of that one a few yers ago and time has not been kind to it. But it's still completely watchable if you don't mind "bad" movies, which I don't.

Re: Punky Brewster Halloween Special - good to see that's on its way, Matt. That ep, and the one where Cherie(sp?) gets stuck in the fridge and has to get CPR from Punky and Margot - are the ones everyone remembers when the show comes up in conversation.

Of course, you really can't possibly beat your review of "The Worst Witch," a film I actually watched on numerous occasions as a kid - and still watch every Halloween to this day.

As for Chris Warner - when you've been in a movie featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (e.g. "Quest of the Delta Knights") it's difficult to consider oneself an A-list star, or even a B-list star. Warner, I'm afraid, is somewhere around M-list, I think. He's no Clu Gulager, but he's no John Agar, either.

Great review, Matt. I actually remember seeing the end of this on a local station some Saturday long ago, with Odo dressed in black. Now I know of the greatness that I missed out on. Oh well, maybe it'll play again next month.

Dolemite: "Transformers: Headmasters" is a direct sequel to the original Transformers cartoon. A few of the original cast remain, but the focus of the show shifted to a group of new, smaller Transformers who piloted their own vehicles. For extra power, the vehicles would transform into a larger robot body, and the pilots would become the robot's head, hence the term "Headmasters".

Anyone who wants to see a "new" G1 cartoon released on DVD would do well to vote for it on Rhino's poll. Or if you really don't care, do it anyway to help the rest of us out ;)

Was Kathy Bates famous for anything before Misery, which came out a year later?

Anyhow, for Hallowe'en, I'm still hoping Matt will do something about Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, still my personal favourite "cheese" flick, though it had a much bigger budget than did most of the "cheese" Matt reviews. Most of the movie's pretty awful, actually, though you do get to see a pre-Star Trek: The Next Generation Patrick Stewart, and Mathilda May, from... umm... that other movie Mathilda May was in. And the ten minutes or so of mayhem on the streets of Westminster/London is still a heckuva lot scarier than anything in 28 Days Later, and you gotta love the "Prime Minister Scene".

Loved the header graphic for the review. I suppose MBFIAV "forgot" the staple rule about vampires and sunlight. Although not strictly 80s, I wouldn't mind seeing a review of "Hocus Pocus". A pre-pubescent Thora Birch with too much lipstick is an alarming sight in itself.

John Ritter dead at 54.

Matt:
How about a commemorative review of Flight of Dragons or Real Men?

Hero at Large is something of his I've never seen, but seems like promising oh-so-high-brow fare.

Blake Edward's Skin Deep was probably Ritter's best work, even if they did stick an ultra-happy ending on there where it didn't need it.

Of course, it might be a bad idea to do commemorative reviews, because then you'll start getting complaints when you miss some random person, and it will become a high-pressure obligation.

No matter where the writers went with the show, or how many cast changes they had, he was always able to nail his character perfectly... basically a free lovin' horndog with a good heart...
someone we could all identify with.
The man in black has past away. My dad always had his songs playing in the house whether I liked it or not. This guy was always cool and liked by ALL generations. His music
(a little folk a little country a little bit rock n' roll) never went out of style. Everything from
I walk the line to ring of fire to man in black, everything that came out of his mouth was pure genious. He would sing about politics, lost loves, the poor, the young/misunderstood. I owe a great deal to this man as his music is one of the few things my father and me both love. I saw him on Larry King the other day. He seemed like the type of person you wished were your grandfather.
John Ritter-54.
Johnny Cash-73.

And look pretty good in fake hair!
They're kind of afraid to go out at night;
They don't get historical facts just right.
They hike up their codpieces really tight;
They look pretty good in fake hair!

A sweet Delta Lady am I, am I -
More fair than the stars in the sky.
I'm bold and bawdy, and oh, my Lawdy,

Lost Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash in the same week. Damn.

Chestnuts roasted by Hellpop! @ 09/12/2003 08:34 PM EST

This hasn't been a good summer for celebrities, period - in addition to Cash, Zevon, and Ritter, we've also lost screen legends Gregory Peck and Katharine Hepburn, comedy legend Bob Hope, action legend Charles Bronson, and dance legend Gregory Hines (who was a year younger than Ritter - I was probably one of the only people who watched his sitcom on CBS a few years back), as well as several sports legends.

I couldn't believe it when I read that John Ritter died. My jaw almost hit my computer desk (I found out online). The scariest thing was, I saw a commercial for "8 Simple Rules..." while watching Monday Night Football last week (no comments on how bad the Eagles were, please, I saw the game) and he looked fine, if a little non-plussed at all the skin his "daughers" were showing off.

"Three's Company" just isn't going to be the same...and what the heck is ABC going to do about "8 Simple Rules..."? John Ritter was pretty much the whole show.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 09/12/2003 10:02 PM EST

It definitely blows, especially because the show seemed to be doing okay, and those who've liked Ritter for years have always been pulling for him to find his "new thing." 54 is way too young, but he led a VERY full life -- check out his career scope on IMDB, he's been working practically nonstop. Watching TC reruns is definitely gonna be sad now, though.

BTW, the only ep of his new show that I caught was the one where they did that huge TC skit dream sequence, with Ritter playing Roper. Pretty funny. Very sad news.

Absolutely. I literally can't believe John Ritter's dead. I was never much into Johnny Cash, but I've recently watched tons of Ritter's work, and I love him to death. (pardon the pun.) He was /such/ a fantastic, hilarious man. so incredibly vital. I'm amazed, because I watch "8 Simple Rules" constantly. One of the best new comedies out there, with Katey Sagel, too. And now that's just over, and I again have nothing to watch.

Anyway, yeah. great article, matt, but I'm mighty saddened over the Johns.

I thought it was odd when I heard John Ritter died, because he was so young. That didn't bother me so much, because I'm not a big fan, outside of his work in "Sling Blade." But when I found out Johnny Cash died, I cried. I take comfort in the fact that he and June are together again, but still, it's heartbreaking. America has lost one of it's few remaining musical treasures.

Yeah, it's sad when celebreties die. I guess we all think that they're invicible somehow. I didn't feel much a few years ago when princess Diana died, or Mother Theresa. Strange, we only seem to morn the deaths that we were familiar with. Is it morbib? You bet. Is it wrong? I think so.
When I think of all the poor children that die every day in 3rd world countries, I get a sick feeling in my gut. Who speaks for them, besides the organizations that ask for money while we change the channel? Do we even know that the money gets to these starving kids? To think that we worry about things like new cars. I don't know what else to say.....
Thanks Freakachu, I guess my old man lied about Johnny's age so he'd be younger than him.

and, most importantly, I've actually been to the "all night meat market" before: its in the back of a grocery store called "whole foods market" (which, sadly, closed up and is now a Petsmart store). the bookstop that is built out of a refurbished movie theatre right next to it is still there, though.

the tragic irony: a bunch of stuff that was shown in the film? like the whole foods market? thats sort of near the gayish side of town. no wonder his parents thought he was a bit off! "no, mom and dad, I suck BLOOD!!!"

Really? I'm a Fight Club fanatic. I obsess over it. One of my favorite books/movies of all time. Who/where was Ralph?

As far the recant losses, what can I say that hasn't already been said? We've lost some real legends.

Turkey-- no problem. A statistic like that is easy to get wrong.

Here is MY issue--

I watch ALL of the 80's movies. And I watched 'em when I was a kid. This is why I love this site.

But I've never been a big fan of television (my parents always thought it was weird for a kid to feel this way, but I always hated the boob tube!).

Musicwise, I've always been able to choose my own, with lots of feedback from relatives who liked lots of different kinds of music. And even when I "hated" country, loved Milli Vanilli, and had "New Kids" sheet sets, I STILL liked Johnny Cash's mucic, even when I didn't know what he was talking about.

Frankly, he was a lot like a kid who knew what grownups were thinking. Plus the deep voice ALWAYS sounded cool.

Frankly, Matt, I would rather you DID NOT do a tribute to either of these very talented men-- because this site is where we go to remember things that ended LONG ago, and make us feel young-- whereas everyone I know who misses the two Johns suddenly feels old.

Please, please, let us remember these two classics the way we will, and don't bring their all-too-modern deaths into your retro site. -_-

By the way, for turkey-- I did mourn when Mother Teresa died. (May have to do with my Catholicism.) But I thought it was HORRIFYING the way people were more concerned over Princess Diana's death than hers.

Maybe THAT is how God is going to end up judging us... >_<

Beh, its bad enough Kathy Bates was in a B-movie, cheesy, 80's vampire flick. At least she didnt *star* in one. Yep my friends, that honor went to someone else. Someone who currently makes 20 mil a pic in Hollywood....boy does that town have a short memory. Check out the film( or at least the film credits ) 'Once Bitten' to see who Im talking about. Here's a hint..this guy got to feel up Brad Pitt's wife in a recent movie. Yup.

uh i think we all know of/seen once bitten, no surprise there? did u know he also was in a television series "in living color"! yep it's true!

ha jus playin wit u but yea once bitten wasn't really that bad, taken at face value, and he had to be pretty young at the time - it's not like his big break, 'ace ventura' was exactly high brow entertainment right?

he was also in 'earth girls are easy', and i've seen him in some boring made for tv movie - can't recall the name.

Before Once Bitten Jim Carrey was also in a very short-lived sitcom called Duck Factory. I remember once catching an episode at like 6 AM on a Sunday on Comedy Central. It wasn't very good.

Chestnuts roasted by Hellpop! @ 09/14/2003 05:41 PM EST

And while we're on the subject, according to IMDB, Jim Carrey's earliest TV appearance?

As himself, at the age of 7 on Sesame Street.

the name of the jim carrey tv movie was "doing time on maple drive" i only remmber becvause over here they played it because he had just come to stardom in ace ventura and the mask so they thought they could make a quick buck by saying it had carey in it.
oh yeah did i mention it fuckin sucks

I remember this movie. Not great, but not bad, either. Refreshing to see a movie where vampires don’t necessarily have to be evil. Having the butcher be the vampires’ ally, confidant, and blood supplier was a great touch. I wish Paul F. Wilson’s character had become a vampire at the end, like David Warner’s character. Robert Sean Leonard reminds me too much of a former friend of mine named Geoff who abandoned me, though.

reading the comments, i remember that rene a also was on a old fave show of mine "chicago hope" as adoctor (cant recall his name), with tourettes syndrome. One scene i recall is one he just started yelling "DEAD DUCK! DEAD DUCK!" yup, way to get your patients encouraged there. Odo is cool, and i'm glad not to be the only one freaked by that episode of punky brewster. there was one facts of life episode (part of it had a guy in a pig costume and a chain saw) that really freaked me out. (thank god i got over that, wait, i think i smelll bacon....)

Oh man, I've actually seen this one. The review is infinitely more entertaining.
And where did I see it? Come on... it wasn't on video, so that leaves only one other choice, the channel that airs anything its owners can get the rights to: the SciFi channel!

Candice posted the following:

"Matt, where do you find these movies? I'd surely love to watch MBFIAV, but I doubt I'll be able to find it at my local Blockbuster.."

Avoid Blockbuster if you can. If there's another video retailer in your area, visit them instead.

Well, I had HBO at my house in the mid eighties so I have no need to rent this thing. Being the hopeless TV addict that I was, I've had it etched permanently into my brain. HBO was a 24 hour network with massive amounts of airtime and a not too extensive film library. Their cost effective was to acquire the rights to a small handful of grade B garbage to fill that time.

Its not just that these things were bad, but that there weren't many of them. HBO only ever bothered to buy to secure a small handful of these things, despite their obvious cheapness, and compensated by running them into the ground, and then running them again, and again. Over a decade later and I can still remember this, the Wraith, and a few others as if I'd just seen them yesterday.
