First Post? I dunno..
I personally love Dream Warriors; it was so damn goofy! Freddy's Dead was cool too; was that not the one with the trippy psychadelic video game kill?
Oh well.
I checked out RoG's site also.
Cheers.

I was huge into anything Michael Jordan had a hand in back in the "Pro Stars" days, but I remember having to force myself to try and sit through that darn cartoon. Sometime's you just gotta draw the line.

Heh.
And thinking about that Top 11 list, I really miss the days when I would come home from school and watch "Shake, Rattle, n' Roll", "Beetlejuice", "James Bond Junior", and Nick Toons....
Kids nowadays don't know what they're missing.
Was BTTF really on for two years? I do remember Doc's episode video asides, but not the apparent longevity of the series. I guess Ren & Stimpy changes a kid.
Cheers.

Since squirt guns have been largely ignored on X-E, how about an article the wonders of the Super Soaker? Even more obscure, but with higher risk of getting shot by the police, were the realistic, battery operated guns (and bazooka)from Entertech.

2 things about the Top 11:
1) Michael J. Fox got TWO spin-off cartoons? I guess he was kind of cartoonish (like Bart Simpson, he never appeared to age, for example).
2) I don't know if the USA was tortured with it, but the strangest cartoon spin-off I know of is the Highlander cartoon. It makes almost as much sense as Highlander 2. Without heads getting cut off (it is a cartoon for kids, after all). But there is a boomerang involved, I think.
I'm going to go read about Freddy toys now.

Ahhh Matt, did you forget about Hammerman? From IMDB: "Stanley work[s] at the local recreational center in the city of Oaktown. Whenever trouble threatens his homeboys, Stanley puts on his magical dancing shoes and is transformed into his super-heroic alter-ego, Hammerman!" That show was insane...if I recall correctly, he even used the parachute pants to, well, parachute... You should review it sometime. ;)

Great list as usual and it makes me happy to comment after the annoying blackout, got stuck in Boston, then got stuck outside Port Authority for a couple hours until I was informed that they moved bus traffic to that weird place with the dolphins on the wall around the corner. Needless to say the farther I got away from Boston and New York the happier I was and it's good to be back home in Houston! Now let us mature and appreciate some toons.
#11 One of the few shows that I can say that the opening theme song, Queen, was the highlight.
#10 Never saw and to be honest I am far too stupid to comprehend the idea.
#9 Awesome cartoon for the simple fact that they let Piper wear his skirt.
#8 Vaguely remember this but wasn't there a live show that was the exact same concept first?
#7 Makes me grin knowing that George Lucas is both troubled and somewhat of a liar. Does anybody believe he had the whole thing planned back in the 70's? Still love the movies, even the new ones for the sparse reasons of Natalie Portman, Star Wars universe, Anakin's wooden acting, and more Yoda.
#6 Interesting but even at six years old I knew this show was extremely inaccurate with history.
#5 This show was good dammit! What did kill it was the Teen Wolf sequel, may you burn in the ninth circle of Hell Jason Bateman. At least they didn't make a cartoon out "The Hogan Family".
#4 Beetlejuice was a great cartoon, it was quite a change from Burton's movie to this John Water's like animation. Doomie was the coolest living car ever and that includes "My Mother the Car" and "Teen Car". They had to be on something.
#3 I still have my complete set of toys from my Sonic kids meals. I also remember Bill Nye doing his thing on the show, the animation was crappy but my only complaint is that the tuning fork thing never really works on frogs.
#2 This cartoon sucked.
#1 This cartoon was cool, whenever I see it I can't help but think that it would have been great with Buffy.

Wow. I remember that cheesey stick up Freddy. I had gotten in one christmas as a stocking stuffer. come to think of it, i asked for alot of twisted shit that christmas... a toy chainsaw, a freddy glove, the talking freddy doll, a hockey mask, and a bunch of other shit that should have made my parents haul my ass out to a shrink. now that i think of it, there was this one freddy toy that i had always wanted, but could never find in stores. they were along the lines of mad balls (i think). they were heads that had slash marks across their faces. parent groups went nuts, and most stores pulled them. of course, this just made me want it more, and my mother went on all kinds of impossible quest to locate those frigging things, but to no avail. christ, my parents went a long way to indulge my sick childhood interests.

I've only really seen the last four. I think I've seen a small bit of Gilligan's Planet, like maybe five minutes.
When I saw "Bill Nye, The Science Guy" for the first time (I was just curious, I SWEAR!), it took me a while to recognize the host. Then, once it clicked, I couldn't help but say all day...
"That science guy from Back To The Future has his own show now! No, not Doc, that other guy. No, the cartoon, not the movies! You know, that guy who acts like Beakman? Yeah, him! He's got his own show!"

Chestnuts roasted by pikachulover @ 08/20/2003 08:29 PM EST
You could probably put something else instead of water in that squirting mask thing. For a real quick and real effective practical joke, you could try hydrochloric acid. I mean, you'd have to be pretty quick to prevent it from melting the plastic and your hand, but if you can pull it off and you manage to get a headshot too, you could claim that the spirit of Freddy is trying to make everyone look like him. Maybe that's a little over the top though, I don't know.
And thinking about that Top 11 list, I really miss the days when I would come home from school and watch "Shake, Rattle, n' Roll", "Beetlejuice", "James Bond Junior", and Nick Toons....
Hah! I remember James Bond Junior, I always mocked his accent. I still watched the show though, but then I'd watch just about anything.
Makes me grin knowing that George Lucas is both troubled and somewhat of a liar. Does anybody believe he had the whole thing planned back in the 70's?
Probably not the whole thing, but I think he did have some ideas he still wanted to work out at any rate. The man probably wrote over a dozen different screenplays before he ended up with the final script for A New Hope, and I think quite a few elements in those early drafts return in the prequels. I distinctly remember the name "Mace Windu" at any rate. And even if parts I to III weren't really part of the original plan, he did intend to make a complete trilogy if the first was successful, and presumably the "Episode IV/V/VI" didn't come from nowhere either.
And yes, I am a pretty sad individual.

Since I don't really have the stomach for slasher horror flicks (I shook for an hour after seeing the bloodless Nicole Kidman spook-fest "The Others" two years ago), I'm going to bypass Freddy Kruger and go straight to the top 11 list.
#11 - Don't remember this one at all, probably because I hated almost all sports with a passion as a kid.
#10 - I missed this one by a year - my earliest Saturday morning memories seem to come from 1984.
#9 - Vaguely remember this one, but I've never really been a fan of wrestling.
#8 - Also missed this one, which may be just as well, because I burnt out on "Gilligan's Island" re-runs fairly early and have never really re-gained interest.
#7a - Since I'm one of two "Star Wars" fans in the universe who isn't too bothered by the Ewoks, you'd think I'd remember this one, but I had no idea it existed until a few episodes were released on video a while back.
#7b - ....And I only knew about the existance of "Droids" because my little brother rented it so much my mom finally gave in and bought him the tape when the video store sold it. The leads are bland, but it's overall not bad, and the droids do what they do best - be funny.
#6 - I loved this show as a kid, even though I knew all too well how innaccurate it was.
#5 - I agree with Happenin' Mojo - this is one of the better shows on the list, and a personal favorite. It was part of the great CBS line-up that included "Muppet Babies," "Pee Wee's Playhouse," "Galaxy High School" (speaking of weird cartoons...), and "Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures."
#4 - My kid sister adored both "Beetlejuice" the movie and this cartoon. The movie's a little odd for my taste, though it has its moments. The cartoon wasn't quite as imaginative, but was certainly engaging enough.
#3 - This was one of the last cartoons I watched reguarly until we had our cable (and networks) turned off in 1992. Doc Brown's amusing riffs on science and the 'toons accompianing them were fun and, at the very least, somewhat more accurate with science than "Bill and Ted" were with history.
#2 - I've never been a huge "Alf" fan, either, so I never caught this one.
#1 - A long-standing favorite, and one of the few good cartoons I remember on ABC in the late 80s - early 90s. ("Beetlejuice" was another.) I actually had something of a crush on Egon for a time.
Wes, I remember "Hammerman." Oh, yes, I do. It wasn't plesant. The "New Kids on the Block" cartoon from the same era (late 80s - early 90s) was even worse. Picture "Superstars," but with a bunch of dull teenage boys having the adventures instead of a bunch of adult sports stars. Tell me again why all the girls in school in the early 90s raved and ranted over those guys again?

How long has FOX Box (or Fox kids, or whatever) been showing the Back to the Future cartoon? I turned the TV on on morning, and I had a serious "WTF?!" moment, and just sat there fixed watching it. And it actually stood up pretty well for it's age too.
Wish they'd put it on DVD though...

And whats life without Micheal J. Fox. I remeber when the cartoon 1st came out there was a tie-in with McDonald's. Some of the coolest Happy Meal toys ever. Next to Changeables of course.

Hey... this is rather off topic, so I'll start out by saying that the weirdest thing to me about the Beetlejuice cartoon is how people who BJ basically attempted to extort, rape and murder are now his friends and go on wacky adventure with french skeletons and whiny girl spiders...
Anyway... while watching "I Love the 70s" I saw a commercial for "I Love the 80s Strikes Back!" I was reminded of a comment from Matt about being in New York for something on VH1... and lo and behold today Could this be the mysterious reason Matt is in talks with VH1??? They really skimmed over all the cool toys and other things in the first series... Maybe Matt will soon joined the esteemed ranks of Michael Ian Black and Mo Rocca...

A lot of people seem to consider F13 VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan the worst film in the series. But, dude, F13 IX: Jason Goes to Hell. The fuck? You guys are so young. I had to put up with "Partridge Family 2200AD" which confused my young mind into thinking:
"If the cartoon Partridge family is the Partridges in space then George Jettson in space must be George Jefferson. I wonder why he isn't black."
God that Gilligan's planet was awful. One episode, they discovered a race of aliens where the females worked and the males stayed home and cooked and cleaned and wore aprons. All 80's cartoons had lessons, 70's cartoons were short on lessons even if they sucked.
The WWF show was pretty cool.
That Laverne and Shirley Cartoon was cashing in on the success of "Private Benjamin" not the cold war.

One of the websites I regularly visit is www.toontracker.com which does an excellent job of presenting rarely seen cartoons. There are a number of Prime Time to Saturday Morning cartoons listed on that site that I missed completly...along with L&S, both "Happy Days" and "Mork & Mindy" had cartoon versions (and apparently all the actors including Robin Williams did their own voices.) Also there was "The Dukes" (Apparently Bo and Luke ripped off Wacky Races as Uncle Jessie stayed at home and held conversations with a raccoon) the afore mentioned "Partrage Family 2200 AD" and "My Favorite Martians" both before my time. And my favorite part of "A Very Brady Sequel" ... "My God, I'm tripping with the Bradys!" Now THOSE are weird cartoons. :)

You know what the greatest part about remembering all these old shows is? I lived in Mexico until i was 9, so it's fun to remember how dumb the spanish versions of shows were. Here are my top 10 Show/Character translations.(in a very non-elaborate order)
1- Ghostbusters= Los Casafantasmas(say THAT three times fast)
2-Cobra Commander was "El Comandante Cobra" No big change there, but he sounds so much more like a Colombian president. ^_^
3- Smurfs AKA "Los Pitufos" .... nuff said.
4- "He-Man, y los Amos del Universo" The best part part was his metamorphosis: "Por el poder de Greyskull... Yo soy HE-MAN!!!!"
5- La Abeja Maya (Maya the Bee). I LOVE that stupid song!
6- Least effort was done on Skelletor "Eskeletor"
7- I always felt odd watchin GI JOE in Mexico. I had no idea they were US soldiers ha!
8- The Spanish word foe whale is "Ballena" Remember that Matt.
9- I said i had ten. I lied. I feel sleepy.
10- I lied about having lied.
*The last two items on the list are true.
**The previous statement is a lie. :D

Garrison I watched that Dukes of Hazzard Cartoon. Oddly it came out right after "Bo and Luke" left the Prime Time show and were replaced by "Coy and Vance". The cartoon featured "Bo and Luke" and the General Lee had a few extra features like it could make tank treads or balloon tires that would allow it to float. If it had come out a year earlier, it probably would have been a much bigger success.
I had forgotten all about the "My Favorite Martian" cartoon. Bill Bixby's character was also an alien in the cartoon and had two antennae while "Mr. Hand's" characher retained the single antenna in the back. Good times.

I would have loved to have been at the network meeting where they round tabled that one. Prostars...oddly enough, I remember watching this show, although I've never given a rat's ass about sports.
L&S in the Army escaped me for some reason, although I was 4-6 at the time.
Rock 'N' Wrestling was also one I watched, although I never gave a rat's ass about wrestling, either.
I never saw Gilligan's Planet either, which I think is a pity.
I remember Ewoks and Droids...I even have some of the Star comics based on the series...if anyone's interested...
I loved the Bill and Ted cartoon...it wasn't great, but it kept my heroes alive...and it was better than the live action show, by far.
Teen Wolf was odd, just odd.
I remember watching Beetlejuice, but I don't remember much about it...it was alright, just something I watched because it was on, I think.
Back to the Future was the shiznit. Oddly enough, Christopher Lloyd played Doc in the live action bits, but didn't provide the voice for the cartoon...WTF?
I remember liking Alf Tales more than the Alf cartoon, because it was familiar subject matter...I didn't give a rat's ass about Alf's life on Melmac, I was all about seeing Alf and his pals reenact The Wizard of Oz.
The Real Ghostbusters was also the proverbial shiznit...the Sandman creeped me out.
All in all, any of these shows would be prime candidates for X-E reviews...
Matt, so many other spin-offs have been mentioned, I think we need a sequel to the list...

It's a sort of cartoon preservation club, where you can pretty much acquire almost any episode of almost cartoon series. It costs a 'donation' of about 10-20 bucks a tape (there's usually several episodes on one video), and this guy has a whole ton of stuff. I got my (almost) complete collection of the Dungeons&Dragons

I clearly recall a cartoon featuring Laverne and Shirley as half-assed superheroes -- half-assed literally, as they had found a super power suit (in a blunt ripoff from 'The Greatest American Hero') and, unable to agree who should wear it, spilt the costume in half -- one of the girls getting the powers inherent in the suit's top, and the other wearing the super pants. I assume Laverne got the shirt, since that would allow them to carry her monogram schtick into a superheroic design. What I don't recall was whether this was a short-lived cartoon of its own, or just a single episode of 'L&S in the Army', or a backup feature on the Fonz cartoon...
