Well, finally, I've got electricity again. You don't live under rocks, I don't need to tell you that half the world, the moon, and scattered portions of Jupiter experienced a massive power outage yesterday afternoon. While technically living in what's considered part of NYC, it's admittedly the ass end part, so we were some of the last to get our lamps and hairdryers operative.
No power anywhere. After bullshitting with the VH1 people, (who were even nice enough to offer me and the woman a ride home, thanks again) I split and tried to figure out how I was going to find that woman in question with the 650,000,000,000,000 people swarming the streets, effectively creating a NYC Opposite Day where the pedestrians ruled the road and drivers were forced to suffer through inch-an-hour crawls for all of eternity...or at least until the electricity came back on. This was my first "on scene" experience with this sort of event, and I've gotta be honest -- I haven't really heard the status report yet, so while I feel bad for anyone who got trapped in an elevator or overwhelmed with heat and exhaustion, I actually liked the city a lot more than I usually do. It was chaos. At first, nobody knew anything. Few, if any cell phones were operating when the outage first went down, and when the news started trickling down that other major cities were without power, everyone began assuming the worst. It wasn't one of those deals where you feared for your life or anything, but you certainly wondered if the power outage was going to segue into a bunch of those ID-4 motherships hovering overboard with genocidal weapons. Then, while passing one of the corner-side flower vendors, I overheard the traveling botanist utter these words:
Right then and there, I knew everything would be fine. Actually, it was even better than "fine" for some. There were thousands upon thousands who just wanted to get home as soon as possible, but after the woman located me while I was in the middle of an extensive search for her, (I was sitting on a bench with a Snapple, but I swear I was looking around for her simultaneously) we decided to spend a bit of time there since the buses were just too crowded to even attempt boarding. There were countless others who did the same, and for them, it was like getting the party nobody was going to let us have under any other circumstances. People carousing through the streets with alcohol in hand is normally illegal, but the cops were too busy making sure old ladies weren't getting run over. Even further down the list of priorities was upholding the city's poorly received "no smoking in bars" law, so smokers who could find an open bar had reason to praise poorly developed power cells. For those who opted to wait out the insanity for clearer travel routes home, things could've been much worse.
Still, the sight of the normally car-packed streets filled with sweaty people was something to behold. Click "more" to see some of the pics I snatched with my trusty camera -- it would've seemed a bit more like I was giving into sensationalism if it wasn't for every television station imaginable having cameras at every corner...
So, obviously, most everything in the city was closed. No restaurants, no stores, no museums, no Broadway shows -- nada. What can you do in a New York City without electricity?
Not much. But you can still get hot dogs!
Poor hotdog vendors. While everyone else is getting drunk and rampaging in the streets, they are forced to shovel out hotdog after hotdog in the sweltering heat. But all's well now. Matt has his power, the hotdog vendors are not the only ones working, and the apocolypse hasn't occured. I wish stuff that exciting would happen in the south...

Experts say this was caused by the sudden sonic boom of thousands of Amish laughting similtainiously.

Glad you got home safe, Matt! I, too, was caught in the City when the Happy Blackout Day occured. I walked from Columbus Circle to Forest Hills-Queens in roughly 3 1/2 hours. Mob-rule rules! Take that, you driving suckers! When I finally got back to my place, people were outside having a blast. Having no TV & computers for a change is nice, so in the spirt of nature, we grabbed a candle, a few guitars, some warm beers, and jammed out the entire night Floyd-style in the Happy Blackout Day park. Best night ever. So, Mr. Matt and all his faithul readers, with the Moon and Mars hanging ever so beautifully over our heads, we wish you all a very merry HAPPY BLACKOUT DAY!

I have to tell part of my blackout story. I live just outside of Detroit and was at "work" (babysitting) at the time. I had no idea how big the blackout was- I thought it was just the neighborhood I was in. It happened right when one of the kids turned off the Nintendo, so they thought that they did it. It was pretty funny. But one of the kids was supposed to call his mom at 4:30 and couldn't because there was no working phone. About 4:30 I hear a car door shut, and I say: "It's your mom, John. It has to be. She's coming to see why you didn't call." Sure enough, it was her. She runs up and starts frantically pounding on the door. She comes in. "You have to come to my house. The power's out halfway around the world! There've been all kinds of explosions!"
She's so over-the-top. We were under control and as soon as she shows up, we're thinking that we're all going to die. Seriously! That's one person that I never want to be around in an emergency again.
The whole ordeal has been taken care of so quickly, I can't believe it. It takes 3-5 days on average for power to be restored to my neighborhood when the power goes out any other time. I'm glad though, even though my fish died anyway. Probably got boiled alive. I miss my fish. He was fat.

The blackout hit Canada just as hard as anywhere, I was stuck at home without heat or anything, nearly froze to death. However, the produce in my refridgerator did not spoil, which is one upside of living in the great white north during a blackout. No, kidding, it was hot as hell up here. For entertainment the fam and I played countless games of candle lit monopoly to pass the time. I won every game, but only because I cheated. I enjoyed your American perspective on the event, wry and juicy...that hotdog looks good.

Is funny. Not a few weeks ago we in Memphis, TN, got blasted by unpredicted straight line winds upwards of 100 mph. Hundreds year old trees torn asunder left 'n right, thrown across major roadways, houses crushed, power out to 75 percent of the population, tens of thousands still without up to two weeks after the fact. This just being one observation from one town in the swath of Mid-South destruction.
Though, I suppose, the Northeast is important, as well.
Wish I were still there. Would have loved to see it.

Yeah,I live on the west coast.Blackouts are really interesting, and dare I say 'fun', since we have them at most for an hour once a year during the windy season.I don't know why,but all those candles and flashlights and trying to get through the house without bumping yourself, and then being able to look outside and see a billion stars for the first time in ages makes you feel alive. Then the TV comes on,the house is filled with blinking 12:00's,the lights replace all the stars then we're back to our normal routine.

Hmm... lucky for me (in Pincourt, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal), Hydro Quebec is a completely separate "grid" unto itself and our systems don't stop running if the power systems in neighbouring provinces and states go down. But a one day blackout is nothing... try going a week or more without power in the dead of winter like during the Ice Storm of '98!
Since people are suggesting things Matt may want to review, I've always wanted to see him discuss the more Eff'ed up episodes of G.I. Joe, like the famous one wherein Shipwreck visits the island or the one wherein both Joes and Cobras get sent to the Egyptian afterlife somehow, or, my favourite weird episode, "The Day of the Viper" wherein mysterious, criptic phone messages answered by Barbecue lead the Joes to all sorts of fun places, like the Cobra Recreational Center in Antartica with the robot Maitre d'.

Proably the most memorable pic for this Californian was the subway comuters sleeping on the Postoffice steps because they couldn't get home. I woun't put it past the NY taxi drivers to up their prices in the time of desperation (I do have relatives there and have been back to visit fairly recently. I know enough not to trust the taxi drivers. My cousins always had me take the subway)
Now imagine Rolling blackouts, which we had to go through a few years back here in Cali (I lucked out cause I live in a area where the power is regulated localy). For two hours at a time, wham, bam, sorry mam. If you could et your hands on or figure out poor gov, charts you could look up when your area would be scre... chosen to help share the burden. What sucks is that the whole "Power Crisis" thing was enginered by Enron and the other power companies to jack up our power rates(no shit). Hmmmmm..... May be the enginered a multi state/province blackout back East to make their plan more bleaveable this time.
Chestnuts roasted by Rogue-13 @ 08/16/2003 07:35 AM EST
Us Californians had to deal with that on a daily basis (not at the regional level as the other day's was) but we usually had at least one power outage a week in the summer of 2000 or 2001...whatever year it was Gray Davis sold all our power and then realized "oh wait, people WANT electricity? I'll be damned"
But with the Terminator as our governor, we can always rely on our electricity.

According to Transformer Geek / KB Toy Guy at the mall, the shippments of Unicron were delayed!
Yes. Indeed, I'm more worried about an expensive toy and a DVD set (Beast Wars Season 1 = :D) than I am about a semi-local, semi-crisis. Go fig. :D

Damn. I wish I had a website like Matt's so I could get a meeting with VH1. I also wish a rolling blackout would occur so that they could give ME and MY woman a ride. Hell, I wish I had woman to get a ride from VH1 with.
Well, that's enough feeling sorry for myself for now. Tell us what's going on with VH1 soon, Matt.

Down in the South, when the power goes off, it takes forever. Usually when it goes off it's during a snowstorm, so it takes twice as long b/c everyone putts around. It was really hot on Fri., prob. the hottest all summer, so I'm glad we didn't get affected...hope everyone else is okay.
Abacus, hope you're doing okay in Memphis w/ the tornadoes. I live in Chattanooga, so the last thing we experienced was that flood in May, and before that, a tiny bit of snow which took me an hour and a half to get 20 mi. to my house...ghetto.
X-E roxors! Let's hear about VH1 sometime, Matt!

Since we're talking about VH1, it reminds me of my grandms. "Your grandma??!!" Yes, my nana. Her English isn't the best and she gave me a sex talk once. It goes like:
"Mijo, you don't wanna go having the sex because you will get "phillis" and it never goes away. You can also get "VH1" and you no ever get rid of that. Not even if you rub Vick's on it"
I love my grandma. I hope she never finds out i have VH1, and MTV as well!

Where did you get the idea that I liked Shia LeBouf,Mel?IMHO,all those Disney actors need ritalin,or those alternative natural medicines I keep hearing about.
Anyway, there is a repeat of the 10-minute Conan blackout episode on Monday on Comedy Cental for those interested.12 o' clock in the middle of the day for everyone lucky enough to live on the west coast.

This is my first time posting and I have to say I pray for stuff like this, but considering I wish for 99.9% of the population to die like in Stephen Kings the Stand it's no wonder I was pretty happy.

I was working for Metro Traffic and Weather during the blackout, doing ye olde traffic reports, which basically consisted of broadcasting to people who couldn't see the broadcast, and telling them that their power was out. Ahh..good times. Plus I was stuck on the LIE for an hour and a half getting there with no AC. I love blackouts.

I almost feel like a trader. But then I remebered that this isnt high school and you can think for yourself and have your own opinions.
I never liked Transformers. It disturbed me as a kid. I couldnt understand that a machine could be alive or have feelings. That what your were seeing in the episodes the machines were all just programed like that. It was immitation of life. Depending on your definition of being alive.
Tells you something aboot what kinda messed up kid I was. Couldnt even watch cartoons without think crazy.

warning that site just put up a new version and i am uncertain whether the blackout complicated matters but regardless it's buggy.
that aside... bitter ale, lemon vodka and redbull with turkey sandwhich, pringles and chicken curry produces a bad fever type condition. lesser side effects include feeling like a bloated fatass and depression.
but that's enough about me lets talk about blackouts, transformers and matts... (there is more than one you know!)
ah crap after reading all 88 preceding comments and consuming said beverages/food i'm too worn to say anything of any imediate comical value.
meep.

We played Domain, and Rack-o. I wanted to play mousetrap, but my mommy wouldn't let me! I drank lots of wine that nite. Lots. Matt looks good holding a hot dog, but NOT amused.

It's called "emergency generators." Many large companies have disle powered generators that can keep them running for weeks at a time. They're an astonishing thing.

Well we had a thunderstorm here in Mass. and I lost power for a couple hours. Once that happened my household quickly turned into a power struggle for whoever could possess the one flashlight we had (if that isn't foresight I dont know what is). By the time I got the damn thing the lights were back on.

so i hear on cnn that a buttload of NY and parts of other places 7th grade geography class in canada doesn't even know exist, were out of electricity. end of the fucking world. i don't want to sound heartless cuz i know many people suffered, but this just pissed me off: ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. seriously, they interviewed actors/actresses on their wherabouts when it happened, and the thing that pissed me off the most, at least 50% of the population probably found the fact that kelly ripa or some bitch was "truth be told, getting my roots done" and MY FUCKING GOD ROB LOWE HAD TO WALK HOME, important, or even tv worthy. who cares. i'm sure those who were stuck in elevators or the subways had waaaaaaay more interesting stories to tell, but i didn't see nearly as many of those as i did about the stars, fuck the stars.
p.s i'm not sure if rob lowe had to walk home, but some dickhead who reminded me of rob lowe had to.

Ok, new topic time.
I live in good ol' Arizona and we are running out of gas.
I don't mean the stuff we get from all our Mexican food either, I mean the kind my car eats.
It is extremely amusing to see people panic and get in line for up to an hour just to get gas.
Lucky me, I drive an Expedition.
Lucky me indeed... o.O

I was at the golf club where I work (in Hilton Head, SC) and I was watching it on the TVs in the clubhouse. Then I handed out more electrically-powered carts. Power is cool.
It's times like this (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE New York and plan to live there one day when I can afford $3500 a month rent for Downtown Manhattan) that I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode where it's Homer vs. the City of New York.
"Marge, New York is a Hellhole. And you know how I feel about Hellholes."

Abacus What up? I'm in Memphis too. Most people at work didn't have power for a week, some for two weeks. I was laughing when I saw Cleveland or Cincinatti or something had a curfew and closed down town. I don't think Memphis even had a curfew on the first night. I'm glad to be down here where everything is so easy going and you don't have to share your streets with 2 billion people on foot that rely on electricity to commute.
