07/09/2003 Entry: "Good Humor's Colossal Fossil Ice Pops."

New Article: The land of the freezer pops is typically uninteresting, save for one Good Humor entree that's as extinct as it's focal topic these days -- Colossal Fossil, the lemonade popsicles with gummy dinos on the inside, were an almost-forgotten fave of mind till I was recently able to locate the old commercial for it, which is included in the tribute as a download. Special bonus: how to make your own Colossal Fossil pops!

Fill the mold about halfway with lemondade, let it freeze almost solid, drop the dino in and fill it the rest of the way and freeze it some more.

You could also "spear" your dino on the stick in order for it to stay. That way it looks like the dino died in a vicious battle before being frozen in its stego urinated grave.

Matt, the reason you shouldn't overfill your ice pop mold is because water-based liquids expand when they freeze. If there's too much liquid in the tray, the lemonade will flow out during freezing, creating a sticky mess in the freezer.

Also:

The problem with that scenario is that the frozen part will float in the fresh lemonade, as ice tends to do. The advantage would be that you could use two different juices for a totally awesome ice pop treat, if you can make it work.

The high point of this article for me was the subtle reference you made to 'Denver', Matt.

No, not the city (or is it a state? I don't know, I'm Canadian...) the Prehistoric "Last Di-no Sauuurr".
I recall watching this on the illfated YTV channel here in Canada before they went to the era of "Cybernetic Space Cube-esk" kids television.

Ah, the memories... *very* odd though that my latest memory of this obscure childhood show is tainted by some fucked up drawing of 'Denver' molesting the shows children I saw once. That thing ruined what whistful memories I had of the show. That and YTV.

Does anybody remember "Vampire Bars" from Good Humor? They were around in the early 90's. They were black popsicles with some kind of red goo in the middle. They sold them at my school, among other ice cream bars, and my friends and I became addicted to them. We would load up on them every day at recess. Sadly, one day there were no Vampire Bars to be found. When we asked what happened to them we were told that they had been banned because of the high amounts of sugar. I never saw another one anywhere after that. Oh, what I would give for just one more delicous Vampire Bar...just one more.

Goggles, I too have lost my beloved Vampire Bars. The ice cream truck would roll by my dad's (broken home) house every weekday at 3:15. I'd be there with my $1.75. I guess Ice Cream cost less back then. Oh well. Great article, Matt. Now review Freaked. (Just kidding. I won't start that)

Matt, thanks so much for this article. Colossal Fossil are my favorite ice pop of all time and for years I have lamented their disappearance. It's good to know someone appreciated them and misses them as much as me.

P.S. I wrote a letter to Keebler to ask why they sold their salty food division and got rid of 'Tato Skins and they weren't very helpful.

I used to LOVE Colossal Fossils. They never sold them at any stores near me, but the Good Humor truck was always chock full of 'em. Vampire bars were incredible as well.
The summer of Colossal Fossils was indeed a great epoch in my life.
It's a shame I could never find the equally short-lived Hulk pudding anywhere near me.

I still have a copy of Denver the Last Dinosaur on an old tape of things we taped off TV when I was about 6. I watched it recently, and I'd be lying if I didn't think 'X-E material' right away. I loved it when I was little, but watching it now made me squirm, thanks to the nasty whine one of the kids' voices had (not to mention the "bogus" eighties slang...)

Denver the Last Dinosaur on tape? lol. Here's hoping Matt has a chance someday to have his eyes assulted by *that*. Perhaps that robot dinosaur episode would make good material.

That whole show struck me as a kind of Scoobydoo knockoff with 25% more 80's slang.
Thing is, I remember this show from the early 90's. I guess the shows marketing directors were not only living in a field that distorted reality; but time too.

Aw, shit. As soon as I saw the screencaps from the ad I could taste the fucking things -- perhaps because all lemonade frozen confections taste pretty similar, but I always remember these were a cut above plus involved dinosaurs and another kind of sugar. I think dinosaurs are perenniel... maybe they can bring them back with Jurassic Park XXXVI: Dinosaurs on Mars.

I actually got my dinos to stay in the middle with little effort.

I just let the lemonade turn slushy-ish, then I put in the dinos. A bit similar to putting marshmallows or fruit inside gelatin...
