02/10/2003 Entry: "Cool Tricks."

I skipped the article mentioned in the last update in favor of another for tomorrow - goes up at midnight. It's about something that isn't known to everyone, but those who do recognize it should be excited. How do you like all this mystery talk?

Speaking of mystery, a friend sent me a pretty cool trick today. Wanna play? I'll post the first step here, and finish it off in the extended version of this entry:

Count the number of F's in the following text:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

After you've counted them, click 'more.'

How many did you get?

Three?

WRONG.

There are six 'F' letters in the statement. Read it again...

FINISHED FILES ARE THE
RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Reason you were wrong: The brain cannot process the word 'OF.'

Weird, huh?

i got one of the "of's" but not the other two.

My brain can't process a lot of things, but this one was actually interesting.

Chestnuts roasted by Brett @ 02/10/2003 06:38 PM EST

I knew the trick, and still could only find five f's.... I even counted like 100 times

Chestnuts roasted by chad @ 02/10/2003 06:45 PM EST

I got six first time around. Now I worry that my brain is out of whack. I seem to score this way on all sorts of psychological tests...

Chestnuts roasted by sempai @ 02/10/2003 06:58 PM EST

I got six too, partially because this is off of the computer screen and not an overhead projector, meaning my face is about three inches from the screen, but mostly because I learned this little trick in Intro Psych, which is where I viewed the aforementioned projection. "Fool me once, shame on..shame on you. Fool me...you can't get fooled again!" :D

Even afer I clicked and it said about the word "of" and whatever... I only saw five f's.

Chestnuts roasted by Jjgoreha @ 02/10/2003 07:45 PM EST

I even scrolled over each word with the mouse to count them, and I only got 3. I feel so stupid. =(

I think I saw this on Mr. Wizard once. Damn, I learned a lot from Mr. Wizard. Bill Nye was cool too, but Mr. Wizard was the best. Nickelodeon had it on at like 6 in the morning and I'd actually watch it. I miss Mr. Wizard.

Well, 2 Mondays have passed, and no more 80s commercials have been added to the site. Are you adding any more in the future, Matt? just curious...

Chestnuts roasted by Corey Haim eats my table scraps @ 02/11/2003 01:06 AM EST

Redesign THAT page along with the archives, but don't worry, plenty more still to come. Though, most of the recent articles have included commercial downloads not available in that section, so check 'em again if you missed it.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 02/11/2003 01:26 AM EST

Wait... which one was more robot and less toy (relatively speaking)... Coleco's Max Steel or Tomy's Omnibot 2000? My guess... Tomy had mecha supremacy, since they still are around, at least in Japan, though they don't seem to be operating in North America anymore other than supplying those little Pokémon toys you get from vending machines in the plastic eggs that are one 2 dollar coin each... oh wait, there is no 2 dollar coin in the States.

Also, wasn't there a recent videogame that was called "Max Steel"... (checking Gamefaqs.com) indeed there was, for the Dreamcast, though it was based on a Mattel action figure toy line apparently.

Oh yeah, I was in psychology in university a couple of years back, so I was fooled by the F counting trick too, though not this time, since I've seen it a couple of times before.

Chestnuts roasted by Steve Brandon @ 02/11/2003 01:47 AM EST

"Corey Haim eats my table scraps": Matt put a few more 80s commercials up on the UGO site here ( http://www.ugo.com/channels/freestyle/features/commercials/ ), including, WOOHOO!, the legendary (in my mind, at least) Colgate Pump commercial with the Mini-Pops kids singing about the Colgate Pump to the tune of Madness's early ska hit "Baggy Trousers".

Chestnuts roasted by Steve Brandon @ 02/11/2003 01:50 AM EST

Oh yeah, I forgot about those. :) They predate X-E's commercial section by a week or so.

I've got a whole other kind of download section going up soon, too. It'll eat my bandwidth and my bandwidth's children, but it's still worth doing.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 02/11/2003 01:56 AM EST

Ah, so you've had the Colgate Pump commercial, the single most memoriable commercial of my childhood (that or British Airways "Manhattan Landing", but they didn't show that one during Transformers, G.I. Joe and Jem), all along, but it wasn't ready for X-E "prime time"? Or are you just spacing the good ones out?

(By the way, I'm pretty sure it predates 1988... I started high school in 1988, and I didn't watch nearly as many cartoons after school when I was in high school as I did from about 1984-87.)

I counted 3,452,123 "f"s. Does that mean I'm super perceptive, and thus a super-human, or something?

Chestnuts roasted by Jack the Ripper @ 02/11/2003 04:41 AM EST

ive seen this trick tons f times, but still got it wrong

Chestnuts roasted by 'tin man @ 02/11/2003 06:09 AM EST

I feel like a smarty pants. I got 6 on the first try.

Chestnuts roasted by t-rah @ 02/11/2003 09:34 AM EST

I saw this trick before and counted all 6... You guys must be retarded if you've already seen it and still can't do it!

Chestnuts roasted by andy @ 02/11/2003 09:41 AM EST

Ja, sehr interessant...

very interesting...

I blame alcohol for the fact that I was wrong.

I have punished my brain with a vigorous Q-Tip poking.

I got four. The first time I read it, it felt wierd, like there should've been more F's. So I did it again, counted four. Did it three more times, only counted four. Zany.

OF OF OF OF OF OF OF OF OF

Anyone notice that Sy-Clone is refered to as "Tornado" in one of the panels of the comic?

I had a Sy-Clone...

Chestnuts roasted by Piscez @ 02/12/2003 01:04 AM EST

They probably were going to call him Tornado originally and couldn't trademark it. Same thing happened with Dr. Mindbender, they call him the wrong name in part of his file card.

Chestnuts roasted by Casey Jones @ 02/12/2003 11:19 AM EST

I only counted two, then three, then got the of thing. I swallow mouthwash after gargling.

Chestnuts roasted by polyox @ 02/20/2003 12:49 PM EST

I read through it and counted 4, so I got one F but not the other 2 (I missed the first OFs, the ones in the 2nd row) but something felt wrong, so I went over it again slowly and carefully, and managed to get 6. But the whole time, the process seemed very difficult, which confused me at the time, considering I was just counting Fs. Makes sense now, though. I know that when i read, I tend to skip over names. I tend to remember characters more by their descriptions, which shouldn't work, but somehow does. Yeah...the brain...weird. This is way too long. Sorry.

Chestnuts roasted by rfs @ 02/22/2003 12:44 AM EST

I counted six. Is there something wrong with me, am i too clever?

Chestnuts roasted by James @ 02/26/2003 02:30 PM EST

I got all six...read and spelt slowly..i guess age is on my side
