Summer Megaparty 2010: Paint Contest WINNAAA.

Just narrowly surviving Tooth Crisis 2010™, it's time to unveil the big winner of X-E's Least Favorite TV Character Paint Contest! This was a ridiculously tough decision, one that I could've spent weeks on, but through the power of instinct and audience feedback, this particular entry just felt right.

Congratulations, Alex! You've just won the best crab-shaped hat in the history of third-party Amazon sellers!

Uncle Joey was the most-submitted character, and everyone who elected Mr. Gladstone as their patron saint of bad TV really brought their A-game. It wasn't easy to pick one specific Uncle Joey over the rest, but "DURP DURP DURP" gave this one that little special extra push. Awesome work, Alex. May your future by filled with crustacean-topped photo ops.

Still, many of you were viable candidates, so I hope nobody is too disappointed. I wish I could buy everyone crab hats, but I am not that charmed. Remember, though -- everyone who entered is going to get something from me in the next week or two, so chins up, eyes on the mailbox, and thanks again for getting me out of actually having to write something interesting for several days this August!

ULTRAMAN- There is no way to get up without any sleep. You’re already up. But going to work with no sleep spells trouble.

Teddy Ray- The first line of your last post had me cracking up!

The passage of time as you get older is ridiculous. 1 week’s time after you turn 25 or so is equivalent to 1 day prior to that. I hate to think that my 30s are going to fly by faster than my 20s.

Chestnuts roasted by Tryclyde @ 08/30/2010 1:26 PM

A bus trip with Amy. Now there’s a sitcom.

Dude, I am so into the Halloween spirit right now. Can’t wait for the countdown to start. I think I might hit up the Dollar Store again this week to see if anything new has been put out. The last time I went they just had one aisle of candy and nothing else, but it was nice to at least see the beginnings of it. I went to Target the other day and they didn’t have anything out though. Hopefully that will kick in soon.

“I hate to think that my 30s are going to fly by faster than my 20s.”Tryclyde

For me, I think they do and they don’t. It seems like the 30′s themselves are flying by, but the time between my early 20′s and early 30′s (I’ll be turning 33 on Nov 2nd–Nov. 2nd X-E birthdays unite!) seems like forever. When I think back to being 22, that seems like a lifetime ago. Those were some amazing times though. Great neighbors, great apartment, weird girlfriend, had a lot of fun, and I have tons of stories from all the crazy stuff I got up to back then. Man, those were good times. Now is just as good, but in a totally different way. Some of the same friends are still there, some are gone, and I have a whole new set of them now that I didn’t even know back then. In some ways I feel like 22 year old me and 32 year old me are 2 totally different guys. I’ll never stop watching Transformers though. I know that much, by god.

I finally got smart this weekend and started bringing my iPod to work. I’ve got a set of cheap little speakers on my desk here and it makes the day go by sooo much better and faster. All day I’ve got it on shuffle and have been listening to a pretty good mix of old school first wave Goth, some newer Goth and Industrial stuff, Johnny Cash, Rush, King Crimson, The Pixies, The Misfits, and Metallica. I keep it turned down just low enough that no one else can hear it. Why haven’t I been doing this all along?

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 08/30/2010 2:42 PM

DJ D: No doubt I am a completely different person now at 32 than I was at 22 and my life couldn’t be more different. However, even though my life was totally different back then, it still feels like that was only a couple of years ago when it was actually a decade ago. Being closer to 40 than 21 is definitely a reality check.

I start a new job the Tuesday after Labor Day. I’ll be working at a cubicle on a computer/on the phone. I sure hope I can use the Internet. And I hope I like it, considering I know next to nothing about the actual job yet.

Chestnuts roasted by Jaclyn @ 08/30/2010 3:20 PM

Jaclyn: Congrats on the job! Yeah, having these little X-E breaks all day really helps to keep me sane. Well, that and the iPod next to me that’s blasting The Misfits right now. I’m technically not supposed to be doing this, but you gotta live life on the edge, I guess, and my sup really doesn’t snoop around or care too much. As long as we do our jobs, he doesn’t care about too much else.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 08/30/2010 4:53 PM

DJ D

I think that’s true for any age gaps, at least for most people. I’m 27, and when I think about what I was like 10 years ago, as a senior in high school, I’m not sure I can even identify with myself. It’s not that I’ve fundamentally changed, but rather I suppose that the specifics that define my person have been broadened. If that makes any sense.

Sure, that foundation of who I was in High School is still there, but it’s been emboldened upon to the point where it’s almost unrecognizable.

Also? Halloween Countdowns make me all happy inside. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 08/30/2010 4:56 PM

Could we have a countdown to the countdown season? That would be awesome!

DJ: I guess we all change slowly from year to year. Something which is terrifying but also fun. Life would quickly get dull if we all stayed the same – it means all the experiences we find doesn’t touch us or alter us in some way. Though seeing the years go by faster each year is absolutely frightening!

Chestnuts roasted by Mr Adam We @ 08/30/2010 5:23 PM

Jason and Ultraman,

No, Tiny Claws is now 2 years old and sleeps through the night. Tiny Claws II: Electric Boogaloo arrives on Friday, so we ARE gonna go through exactly what you mentioned again though. It’s weird, I slept for 2 hours in the middle of Sunday, and then was up till 2, tried to sleep till 3:30, then got up. It’s now 5:00 and I feel no ill effects whatsoever. I also took the day off, cause I wanted to, and I had also worked 7 days in a row previous to this.

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws @ 08/30/2010 6:03 PM

Thanks, DJ D! Yeah…I received a paper saying the dress code was business casual, but when I was there for the interview (and it wasn’t a Friday), everyone was wearing jeans?! And the paper said jeans weren’t acceptable. It also says my cell phone can’t be on. So I’m curious as to how the Internet will work. My boyfriend said maybe these are the actual guidelines but that they’re not really enforced, so we’ll see. I’m glad that I’m already looking for ways to goof off before I even start.

Chestnuts roasted by Jaclyn @ 08/30/2010 7:37 PM

Oh, just wanted to mention for those who listen, Dark Entries: Goth Radio switches to the new fall time slot tonight. I’ll be on 10pm-12am (eastern US time), so that’s a shorter, 2 hour time slot than before and I’ll just be going on an hour later than usual. It’s streaming live at WUSC and you can call me at: 803-576-9872 or drop me an IM at: wuscradio. If you’re lucky, you’ll get your very own shout-out. Supplies are limited.

p.s. I think having a Countdown to the Countdown is a great idea.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 08/30/2010 7:57 PM

Jason: I meant just physically getting up, as opposed to waking up. lol. But yeah, getting no sleep, then having to go take care of responsibilities sucks.
Terror Claws:Don’t worry, you made it through round 1 of sleepless nights, you’ll make it through round 2. lol I know what you mean about insomnia . I had it for a couple nights last week. It feels weird because, you want to sleep, but just cant for some reason.
DJD: Believe me, I sympathize with you. When you grow up, your perception of time just COMPLETELY changes! It honestly astounds me just how fast it all goes by.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 08/30/2010 9:05 PM

You would not believe how many episodes of Thundarr the Barbarian and Voltron you can watch between 4 am and 8 am.

“I think Jugendsehnsucht should start a Jethro Tull tribute band.”DJ D
Ha! Well, I am thick as a brick most of the time, so I’ve probably got a head start there.
New show hours duly noted; I’m there instead of bein’ square this week!

“Jugendsehnsucht, you are one suave motherfucker, my friend.”Teddy Ray
Ladies, ignore your instincts(and/or fight or flight responses) and listen to this very wise man.

Feeling decidedly non-summery out now, after last week’s high of 97°F, it plummeted to a high of only 68°F yesterday, and had a 5 minute sprinkling of rain. Not enough to wash off all the dust, but it was just enough to make it smell amazing outside — smelled just like October outside. Trying to savor the last bit of summer and not rush past it into a premature autumn (the “time flying by when you aren’t a kid” phenomena a heavy factor in this), but if this weather keeps up, I may have to break down and fully embrace the countdown. Or countdown to the Countdown, as the case might be.

Chestnuts roasted by Jugendsehnsucht @ 08/30/2010 10:08 PM

Come on you guys, this is the one place where we don’t get older…

I know we mostly talk about boy’s toys, but a couple of years ago I told the story of how six years ago or so my husband (then boyfriend) threw away all of my beloved cabbage patch kids because he didn’t think I wanted them anymore. I had a few days of extreme rage during which I tore up all of his original movie posters he got from a theater in Chicago.

Well, last week I found a doll that looks so much like my very first ever cpk-brown poodle hair with two ponytails and violet eyes. The same seller also had the original dress mine came in, so I made R buy them both for me. The doll came from a different factory so she’s not exactly the same, but I feel slightly fulfilled.

Lori would care. But I think she grew up and went away. :(

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 08/30/2010 10:18 PM

Jugendsehnsucht: Glad you could join us. I’ll see about getting some appropriately cheesy thrash metal on for you in a bit.

So the lesson here is, don’t throw away Amy‘s stuff. Ever. Hell hath no fury and all that…

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 08/30/2010 10:26 PM

Yay for the thrashy stuff, fromage-laden or otherwise!
I think I’ll be stealing “Depressed for Burial” as a song title now, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Jugendsehnsucht @ 08/30/2010 10:30 PM

I would love to have my Cabbage Patch dolls back!

I believe my mom called me up one day and said, “I’m moving, come look over your stuff, and I’ll toss what you don’t keep” Sadly, I decided that whatever stuff was at the house I wouldn’t need it, so I told her to just throw it all.

My thoughts, x-e is the real Never Never Land!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 08/30/2010 10:35 PM

Forgot to add…I’m pretty sure I didn’t sleep for all the 9 months I was pregnant, for all 3 kids.

For the first pregnancy I used my time to draw a picture for an x-e contest. I made sure I submitted it extra early, I didn’t want to miss the contest.

THE FROST! THE FIRE!
Fist is shaking at the speakers right now, DJ D. Perfect choice in light of us still being in an MS Paint thread.

I have a few toys that I have hidden away and do not let anyone play with, no matter how much begging and pleading is involved. The one I have hung on to the longest is a beanie baby dragon from the mid 90s. I bought it at a beanie baby convention and am ridiculously attached to it. If anyone even looks at it funny, I’m ready to gouge their eyes out.

Does anyone else get excited for Christmas toy season? I love looking at all the brand new toys.

The local Dollar General is just getting in their Halloween stuff. I picked up some of those plastic “leaf bags” (usually stuff mine with newspaper) that look like two ghosts and also some pumpkin garland (because I love sparkly garland). Can’t wait for more Halloween goodness. XD

Chestnuts roasted by kittygirl @ 08/30/2010 10:43 PM

Glad you enjoyed it. I’m really digging their stuff lately. Thanks for turning me on to a lot of that stuff. You’d die if you saw all the Cirith Ungol and Attacker that we have in vinyl here in the studio.

My mom gave all my old He-Man toys to my little cousins one day when I was visiting my dad. I only have 2 left (Trap Jaw and Snout Spout), and I’m pretty sure I had nearly every one in existence at one point. I had a pretty respectable collection. They promptly took them all and tore them all to pieces within a week. To this day, I think a part of me still harbors a small amount of hatred for all the parties involved.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 08/30/2010 10:59 PM

When I was tiny, Disney aired a pilot for a show called “Fluppy Dogs”. Talking dogs meets “Sliders”, it didn’t get picked up by the networks and no one remembers it…Except me. I have the plushie toy that I got for my 3rd birthday and always refused to part with it. I have downsized over the years, but this is special. It makes me remember sitting on the foot of my parents bed and watching the old tv with my little sister, of birthdays, and just being a kid. I have no idea why Disney would release merch for a failed pilot, but I’m glad I have it.
The pilots up on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gxIY2ZS0uI&NR=1

P.S. Good show so far DJ D!

Thanks! Kind of flying by the seat of my pantaloons tonight. Some of this is well thought out, and some of it I’m just throwing on as I come across it. Glad you’re enjoying it.
