Summer Megaparty 2010: Paint Contest WINNAAA.

Just narrowly surviving Tooth Crisis 2010™, it's time to unveil the big winner of X-E's Least Favorite TV Character Paint Contest! This was a ridiculously tough decision, one that I could've spent weeks on, but through the power of instinct and audience feedback, this particular entry just felt right.

Congratulations, Alex! You've just won the best crab-shaped hat in the history of third-party Amazon sellers!

Uncle Joey was the most-submitted character, and everyone who elected Mr. Gladstone as their patron saint of bad TV really brought their A-game. It wasn't easy to pick one specific Uncle Joey over the rest, but "DURP DURP DURP" gave this one that little special extra push. Awesome work, Alex. May your future by filled with crustacean-topped photo ops.

Still, many of you were viable candidates, so I hope nobody is too disappointed. I wish I could buy everyone crab hats, but I am not that charmed. Remember, though -- everyone who entered is going to get something from me in the next week or two, so chins up, eyes on the mailbox, and thanks again for getting me out of actually having to write something interesting for several days this August!

“Glad you enjoyed it. I’m really digging their stuff lately. Thanks for turning me on to a lot of that stuff. You’d die if you saw all the Cirith Ungol and Attacker that we have in vinyl here in the studio.”DJ D
Haha, I probably would. For whatever it’s worth, per Tolkein himself, it should be a hard C at the beginning of Cirith Ungol, but you’re in good company — the band always mispronounced their own name with a hard C, too.
Anyway, if you like Cirith Ungol, another band in a similar vein that you might dig is Manilla Road. Mark “The Shark” Shelton was about as nasal of a singer as there ever was, but I think it gave ‘em loads of personality.

My first shout out! (Dances around the room)

First:
The weather here in SoCal has been cooler in the past couple of days than it has in the past couple of weeks:partly cloudy and mild, with temperatures in the upper 60s/low 70s. It’s been more like early spring than late summer.

Second:
Jaclyn, I was alomst exactly in your position six years ago. I too started a job (my first) on the day after Labor Day and I didn’t know too much about what it was I would be doing. The difference is that I didn’t work in a cubicle; I was doing assembly work for a small-scale manufacturing company. I actually liked the work I was doing; we only worked four days a week (we had Fridays off), the work was easy, and most of the time, the boss didn’t pay much attention as long as work was getting done. At the time, I would’ve stayed there together, but I was laid off in January 2009. It’s just as well, though. I was only making minimum wage, working part-time (two ten-hour days a week) meant no health insurance, and there was really no chance for advancement at such a small company.

Chestnuts roasted by Thomas @ 08/30/2010 11:33 PM

Sorry, that should say “…would’ve stayed there forever.”

Chestnuts roasted by Thomas @ 08/30/2010 11:34 PM

Crap. That should also say “January 2008″, not 2009. I really should read these more closely before I post them.

kittygirl,

I always get pumped about Christmas toy season! Any idea what the “hot” new toy is supposed to be this year? I’m already excited for the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas trifecta of awesome.

On a separate note I went to an old salvage/junk store to look for some outside stuff with my wife. Instead of finding a Sandford & Son type junk store this place had really cool salvaged architectural stuff. They carried old rusty iron gates and a metal Christmas tree that were upwards of 1-2K bucks. They had a life size paper mache statue of Michael Jordan too! They also carried vintage toys they had gathered from houses about to be torn down as well as estate sales. The place was pretty amazing!

Check it out here!

They had awesome old Halloween decorations and Christmas items from the 50′s (statues of Santa, tin signs, etc.). Stuff was pretty expensive so maybe I can catch some deals after the holidays. Just a fun place to visit!

Thomas, at least you enjoyed it and would’ve kept working there had you not been laid off! It sucks about the health insurance though. Not having it is the worst! I haven’t had it for about a year and a half and have been fine health-wise..until right about now. I keep having to go to the eye doctor because I had contact irritation. The first time was an emergency, $80…they asked me to come back for a follow up, and it was $50! I don’t think I should’ve been charged for that.

This job starts at $12/hr, minimum wage in PA is $7 something, so it’s not TOO bad, although I’d rather be making more (obviously). And I think health insurance will kick in after 520 hours, so like, 3 months? I guess we’ll see. Hopefully it’ll open other doors for me. I have a marketing degree but no one at all is hiring, and I also have no real experience..since after college I just became a nanny for awhile.

Jugendsehnsucht: Manilla Road’s not too bad there. I think the voice may take a little getting used to, but weird voices in rock never bothered me that much as long as I like everything else that’s going on. I could see the problem people would have with Geddy Lee, but I’m an admitted Rush nerd, and like you said, I think it gives the band a lot of character. Nobody sounds like Geddy Lee. Nobody.

Another one is Andi Sexgang from Sex Gang Children. They’re one of my favorite bands of all time, partially because of Andi’s voice, not despite it. The man is just a genius and never really got the recognition he deserved. There is some dispute as to when the term “Goth” was first coined in relation to the musical movement, but the accepted story among a lot of folks is that it was first used by Ian Astbury (lead singer of The Southern Death Cult, who went on to become Death Cult, and evenually the band that we now know as The Cult) to describe Sex Gang Children’s fans.

And there, kids, is your useless history lesson for the day.

Jaclyn,
Actually, I was pretty fortunate about the health insurance in that I’ve been able to get away with not having any for quite a while; the downside has been that I had to get a physical as a condition of completing my pharmacy technician course which I had to pay out-of-pocket (the clinic I went was partially supported by the county so I only had to pay $160.00, which isn’t bad). When I needed an eye exam, I just went to Costco Optical and played $40.00. Fortunately, I’ve been able to avoid major injury or illness in that time.

I keep thinking back to the time I was working at my old job and how I almost accidentally stabbed myself through the ribs with a screwdriver. I actually did jab myself but there were no marks and I didn’t even break the skin. No one else was around, so I was glad I didn’t get yelled at, frankly because I was using the screwdrivers I had in an unsafe manner. I don’t even remember what it was I was doing.

I know Matt had some tooth issues but, I’m kind of disappointed with how the ‘Summer Mega Party’ has petered out.

I’m ready for the ‘ween countdown, but don’t want it to start too early.

Chestnuts roasted by MaxM @ 08/31/2010 9:15 AM

I’m looking forward to one of the best Halloween Countdowns ever!!

stina I remember Fluppy Dogs! Just the plush though. I forgot there was a cartoon. I have like 20 cpk dolls laying in my jeep from my moms house after we cleaned it out this past spring. Hope they aren’t moldy or mildewed by now.

I cannot find the little pvc cabbage patch kids miniatures. They came in a variety of poses and styles. I loved those things! Has a ton of them, but no one knows where they went.

I have now taken to revisiting my childhood by collecting Webkinz

I worked in a cubicle for three years after college, and although different people have different experiences, I dreaded it after about a year. I, personally, am just not meant to work seated in front of a computer all day. But, I hope you enjoy your new job!

Can’t wait for the Halloween Countdown. The only thing I wish Matt did with the Summer Megaparty was write an article about something he did during summer in the past. Those are always the best.

Chestnuts roasted by Tryclyde @ 08/31/2010 11:43 AM

Thanks, Tryclyde! I’m looking for some stability in my life right now, lol so I’m all for the cube. I have a college degree too, so if I tire of this job, hopefully I can search for a better paying one!

DJ D: I also love Rush because the Doctor Neil Peart is one of the GREATEST rock drummer of all time.

Speaking of getting up early/staying up late my new schedule is going to take some serious getting used to. I am on Surgery for the month which means 24 hour call and 5am hospital rounds… Maybe I’ll become one of the middle of the night types. Never been one but I always wondered what the world was like while everyone is asleep. Is anything even open at 3 am?

“I could see the problem people would have with Geddy Lee, but I’m an admitted Rush nerd, and like you said, I think it gives the band a lot of character. Nobody sounds like Geddy Lee. Nobody.”DJ D
It’s funny, I listen to all sorts of stuff with supposedly “extreme” vocals, but it turns out the one thing that can make most of my friends clear a room is if I put on anything with those old school high-pitched male vocals that seem to have fallen out of favor in modern rock and metal music. They’re OK with most things, but as soon as I put on something like Rush or Budgie, I can see them cringe. It’s a shame that Budgie never got more recognition. Much like Diamond Head, most folks only seem to remember them as “That band that Metallica covered a few times”.

“Another one is Andi Sexgang from Sex Gang Children. They’re one of my favorite bands of all time, partially because of Andi’s voice, not despite it. The man is just a genius and never really got the recognition he deserved.”DJ D
Oh, definitely! One of my favorite vocalists in that whole scene, alongside Phil Black of Anorexic Dread and Nick Cave’s old stuff with The Birthday Party. All that old stuff from when goth was more like punk’s creepy little brother is guaranteed to put a smile on my face.

Wal-Mart and Denny’s are usually open at 3AM.

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 08/31/2010 6:36 PM

I’ve got it on shuffle and have been listening to a pretty good mix of old school first wave Goth, some newer Goth and Industrial stuff, Johnny Cash, Rush, King Crimson, The Pixies, The Misfits, and Metallica.

One of these things is not like the others…one of these things just doesn’t belong. ;) Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for eclectic taste in music, but I read that and Johnny just stuck out like a sore thumb.

DJ D, I saw your comment about your show and thought, “Ooh! Imma finally listen tonight! Only another hour or so…” Then, as I kept reading the thread, I realized that it’s Tuesday. Dammit. Maybe next week.

Congratulations on the new job, Jaclyn!

Ironically, Dave Coulier was awesome on Out of Control, which was where he originated his Cut-It-Out bit.

Of course, on Full House he suffered from a grotesque lack of Hern.
