New Article: The 7 Scariest Segments of Unsolved Mysteries!

It would seem we have much to discuss. Can we save that for tomorrow? Meantime, new article: The 7 Scariest Segments of Unsolved Mysteries! Kinda grew it out of the sentiment of this old blog post. I've included YouTube vids of my chosen cases, but they aren't my uploads, so don't blame me if half of them give you the "fuck off" black screen by tomorrow.

Composite sketches always have a creepifying element to them… lets just say I cant look at one before I go to bed. I am surprised there is no mention of the NH Serial Killers sketch in the video… it is the freakiest one!

Yeeeey! New articles at last!

“Unsolved Mysteries doesn’t just present this as the work of a demented arsonist, but as the work of a SATANIC demented arsonist. The worst kind!”

^Comedy gold!! :dances:

I watch the new Unsolved Mysteries, and yes, they’ve taken out most of the horrifying aspects named (the spooky music, etc.) When I was about 11 I used to stay up and watch Unsolved Mysteries at night and the end titles theme would completely freak me out.

They arrested someone connected to the Blind River killings, and he was an ex-cop. Who knew?

You captured the whole essence of Unsolved Mysteries PERFECTLY!!!!!!!! It scared me sooooo bad when I was younger, but somehow I was drawn to it!!! from the music, to the update and criminal sketchings……But Robert Stack TOOK THE CAKE!!!! I Loved him!!! And was sad when he died…I always found it fascinating that he would do his commentary from the place where the crime was committed, IE a zoo, a house, the side of the road, the bank……no other host has come close to him……. he embodied unsolved mysteries. Unsolved mysteries has been revived on the Spike channel with host Dennis Farina and I will admit though he brings something new to the show with his commentary, Robert Stack is the king of all mysteries that dare to be unsolved….the only thing on TV today that comes close to the suspense of Unsolved mysteries, is the segment on Americas most wanted when there is the part about a cop who has been slain in the line of duty……every time I hear that eerie music I get scared and have to change the channel! The stories from Unsolved mysteries that scared me the most were the one about the creepy ape named Oliver, his picture is sooo creepy……Then there was the one about Angelo Desideri, the businessman who simply vanished……My all time favorite is the story of Teresita Basa, the ghost who told her co worker who it was that murdered her and that the murderer gave the jewels he had stolen from her to his girlfriend….with this information the co worker went to the cops and they found the jewels on the killers girlfriend…….and the killer Allen Showery. In court Showery’s lawyers tried to claim that a ghost talking through a co worker was not admissible evidence, but in the end he was convicted of the crime……justice from beyond the grave, that’s what I call it !!!!!sends a chill up my spine every time I think of that story…..anybody else?

They need to start re-airing this show on adult swim or something. Maybe with some commentary by Aqua Teen Hunger Force or something? I remember as a child I was only allowed to watch this show in my parents bed room under full supervision.

Hey there. Long time no see. I was wondering when you’d update again.

Anyway, I adored Unsolved Mysteries. Yeah, it was creepy. But at the same time, you just could not take your eyes off the program.

There are a lot of ghost segments equal to or scarier than Tallman’s Ghost, and the one that stands out for me the most is Resurrection Mary. That scared the everloving bejesus out of me, especially the part where the two women in the car run her down. Her EYES during that scene turned my blood to ice water.

I remember an episode with an “alien in the window.”

A family in the late 80s/early 90s was watching a WWF PPV (Survivor Series, I believe). The father breaks out the ‘shoulder-holder’ camcorder and films them for the fuck of it. Not until they review the footage later do the realize a creepy face pops up in the bottom corner of their family room window for a second, looks around and disappears. The next day in a nearby field there was a CROP CIRCLE. The family believes the face in the window to be an ALIEN.

anyone else ever see that one?

i think the scariest one is an unexplained death episode about the guy who “committed suicide” in his hotel bathroom cutting his wrists in the bathtub. he was an investigative reporter digging into the deaths of some military guys who were all in the same platoon. remember those military killings that UM aired years earlier about the 2 soldiers who “hung themselves” with parachute cords? i think he was digging into that. i could be crazy but im pretty sure this episode exists and i remember it scared the shit out of me when i watched it.

You think the Matthew Chase one was creepy to you–I’m watching this (and remembering it from when I was a kid) and discovering his body was found literally just a few miles from where I now live!!

AUGH! That picture after the sign off scared the shit out of me. Goddamnit.

OMG thank you for the Unsolved Mystery post. The music alone made me pee myself. I’m ashamed to say that it is now in the middle of the day, and this 31 year old woman is too afraid to watch it right now. I would say that the “bunk bed episode” has severly seered itself into my brain. I was just happy not to have a bunk bed at that point. But what about the episode of “wheeping Mary” or something like that. The girl ghost that is picked up by a army guy in the 1940′s, takes her to a dance, remarks on how cold she is, drops her back off at the cemetary, then disappears in his rear view mirror.

I whole heartedly agree with you that this is why our generation is severly warped. And I recently confirmed that fact while watching “you can’t do that on television” on youtube. Kids in front of firing squads, a creepy old man in every shot, blatant making fun of “Moose”, Christine, whom I thought was the hottest on the show. Check out “SlimeCon2009″ on youtube. Everyone re-unites. Everyone is looking good, except poor Alistair is bald.

And the Canadians weren’t done with us yet with “Are you Afraid of the Dark”. Gah. I can still see that kid in the carnival fun house returning back that scary clown’s nose after dropping spaghetti all over the floor. And another creepy episode where a kid that was killed on his bike helped solved another murder. His rusty bike washed up. Blech. How could they do this to us? Had they no realization of the inner torment they caused?

One last note, the Sci Fi channel blessed me about a year ago with re-runs of “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction” That show was lame-o and cheesy beyond belief (no pun intended). I never got to re-view the episode where the people are on the Hidenberg. Oh well. Probably for the best. Hopefully I’ll work up the courage soon to see those clips of Unsolved Mysteries, but just know that I feel your pain!!!

They did a story about a serial killer who escaped from a prison in Bradley County TN where I live. They caught the guy in Canada a few months after the episode aired. My grandmother was an extra in a reenactment and got a lot of screen time (about ten seconds) for an extra in a crowd scene.

When I was a kid just hearing Robert Stack’s voice made me wet myself. Until I saw BASEketball.

Wow! This list is INCREDIBLE!! Your #1 pick was mine too! That episode scared the HELL out of me when I was a kid.

Keep up the great work!

I think the Anthonette Cayedito one was scary! In ’86, a 9 yr old girl answered the door at 3am, guy says “it’s Uncle Joe” and she gets snagged away. A year later she called the cops identifying herself only to get the phone taken away. 5 years later at a rest stop restaurant, she tried to get help silently, but didn’t budge. Assume she’s probably dead now.

I like how you mentioned that the show seemed to be the cause of many childhood terrors. I had a lot of trouble sleeping for what seemed like a year (but was probably just a month before it ran its course) after seeing an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. If I’m thinking of another show feel free to correct me, but the memory is still unsettling.

The episode in question was an alien episode and at one point in the program it showed an alien standing over someone’s bed staring down at them, studying them, their head moving from side to side in concentration and fascination. The room was aglow with white light and the situation was too eerie. As a kid of maybe 10 and having a window facing one direction of traffic on the road, it was almost impossible to keep my eyes closed as headlights through my window lit the room with that same eerie glow. I knew if I closed my eyes the alien would be there studying me when I opened them again.

Good list! I remember most of these as I think we’re about the same age. I would have made this the “8 scariest unsolved mysteries segments” and included the one about the haunted Queen Mary ship. About 8 or 8 minutes in when the lady turns around, and the bearded guy is behind her….man, that moment is frozen in my head because it scared the crap out of me when i was 10.
