Christmas Night Lights, Magnets and Bumbles.

It was supposed to be so innocent -- a simple evening run to Toys "R" Us for batteries and a few other needed bits. The place was expectedly mobbed, but I managed to sneak in and out without a long wait, as the second I got on line, a bunch of registers opened up and speeded everything along. Most of the stuff that I needed was on sale, too. It was shaping up to be the most perfect little TRU run in holiday history, until my car exploded on the way home.

Actually, it was just a flat tire. A flat tire may be a minor nuisance for the planet at large, but it isn't for me. I can't change tires, and even if I could, my old donut tire wasn't even in the car. To further the drama, I'd left my cell phone at home.

Struggling to find the button to put on my hazard lights for the first time ever, I sat on the side of the road, waiting for a cop to come rescue me -- just like in the movies. Twenty minutes and a chewed tongue later, and I was still sitting there. Ultimately, I drove the thing home with a flat, clunking the whole way, assuredly twisting my front-right rim into a pretzel and increasing the cost of tomorrow's repair job tenfold.

That's the long way of saying: Today's AC entry will be up a bit late. :)

Tonight's SNT is brought to you by G&E's Color-Changing LED Night Light, snowman-themed. I love this thing. The crude animated GIF really doesn't sell the smoothness of the color-changing feature, where reds subtly morph to blues, and blues subtly morph to whites, and yadda yadda. Most electrical outlets have to spend the holiday season uglied by a dozen extension cords, but with this, your outlet becomes a decoration in itself.

Getting back to Toys "R" Us for a moment: It wasn't easy to navigate the store's aisles with so many stressed out shoppers present, but because Matt is dead and I'm actually a sentient mutant ferret who took his place years ago, I managed. Somewhere in those zips and dashes, I found Christmas magic...

This LEGO Holiday Magnet was a nice surprise, and not just because it's a tribute to the LEGO Santa who died on December 21st, 2007. It was also a nice surprise for at least, oh, thirty other reasons.

The lower base is the only truly magnet-related artifact in the set, and if it would've fit as nicely on the package, this would be more correctly titled a "LEGO Miniature Christmas Playset." You get Santa, a bare tree, a lantern, and what appears to be a toolbox filled with random, orphaned LEGO parts. Mainly I'm just happy that there's something more interesting on our fridge to look at than pictures of my distant cousins' kids now.

While there, I also picked up this small, musical Bumble snowglobe. I love Bumble, and I've failed at every opportunity to see something Bumble-related and not buy it.

A little button on the front activates the globe, sending the styrofoam snowballs spinning like mad while various, Rudolph-related songs blast at a surprisingly high volume. I gave the globe a test run at TRU, and was surprised to learn that it will play music for approximately 17 minutes even if you only press the button once. Not knowing how to turn it off at the time, I was forced to shop with my own personal musical score following me around.

In our collective travels with small, styrofoam snowballs, we've all learned that they're extremely static and adhesive. Hence, as they fly around Bumble's spherical abode, they have a nasty habit of getting stuck to his head. Maybe the snowglobe's makers made it this way to distract us from the unfathomable "BUMBLES" label above the activation button. Why did they pluralize? Clearly there is only one Bumble in this globe.

Off to work on the AC. If I'm lucky, red wine by 3 AM. Happy SNT!

Yay, Bumble. I watched Year Without A Santa Claus and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer for the first time tonight, as well as some other stuff…drank a fair bit too. Off for another first now SNT is here: A Christmas Story, if you hear me snoring, blame the hour and wine…

Abominable Snowman Snowglobe FTW! I like it!

Guise: When you mentioned it earlier, I had no idea that this would be your first-ever Christmas Story viewing. I’m excited, and also sort of nervous. :D

Happy Saturday. Hey Matt, how long does it take you to put together an advent calender installment? Do you have them all scripted in advance?

Chestnuts roasted by K-town @ 12/12/2009 10:39 PM

Maybe it’s meant as some sort of cage, like a speciman jar. They’ve got you started with one Bumble, it’s up to you to catch the rest. Do you think they’ve patented “Bumble Farms” yet? And I mean that in the Ant Farm sense, not the Pepperidge Farms sense. Is Uncle Milton busy?

Now I want Bumble Crackers.

Matt, me too…finally getting to find out what everyones been talking about for years!

Chestnuts roasted by Guise @ 12/12/2009 10:42 PM

Is that Jason dancing with the Peanuts gang underneath that magnet? Who did that one?

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 12/12/2009 10:47 PM

That Snowman night light looks really cool, wish I had one of those. Although I probably shouldn’t consider buying anything that plugs into an outlet, ever again. Even with enough extension cords to provide a massive fire hazard, I never have enough outlets.

Watched Santa’s Slay again tonight. Lots of fun.

Hey Matt, when you look at a Christmas tree, does it remind you of Dynamo from The Running Man? It’s funny how a lit up tree reminds me of a fat guy covered with LED lights, shooting electric bolts from his arms, and singing Wagner.

Speaking of A Christmas Story, it would be funny if someone spelled out Nadafinga outside with Christmas lights. I’d do it, if my front window was just a big bigger.

The best films for me to see around Christmas time are Cobra, Die Hard, The Santa Clause 2, A Christmas Story, Mickey’s Magical Christmas, and Home Alone 2. One of my favorite lines is in that film.

“Get out of here, you nosey little pervet, or I’m gonna slap you silly!” Uncle Frank is such an ass. He’s the relative no one likes to talk about.

YAY! Guise is watching Christmas Story!

YAY, Matt got a flat tire and said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the F-dash-dash-dash!

YAY! I drank the bottom of a bottle of rum and am getting really really sleepy!

Snt is the best.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 12/12/2009 10:55 PM

That’s funny because I like to say, “Look whatcha did, ya little JERK!” from the first Home Alone.

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 12/12/2009 10:57 PM

And YAY!

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 12/12/2009 10:58 PM

I love that they are in his mouth. Rudolph is on at 8! it’s 7 here so that is an hour yay! I am DVRing it which is against my policy but I am going to be busy until about 9 or 10 and so DVRing is mandatory. It snowed today. Boo. Just enough to coat the ground. Yay. Today Harry’s lace broke on his boots so that was just perfect timing. You have to just laugh you know.

I got a USB Christmas tree a couple of years ago that is kind of like that nightlight. It’s clear with a LED light that slowly changes into different colors and it was awesome. It made it feel like Christmas any day of the year. It is cheap though, and I didn’t unplug it carefully and broke the cord. I got it for 3 dollars after Christmas and really should buy a new one. And be more careful unplugging it lol. It’s just easier to buy a replacement. I loved that thing the brief time it worked.

Matt-Regarding your Twitter post, I assume finlandia is some kind of alcohol?

Chestnuts roasted by ericnrosesmom @ 12/12/2009 11:04 PM

Matt, I feel your pain. I’ve found myself on the side of a road with no cell phone way more times than I care to admit. You always get the sneaking feeling someone’s going to either slam your car from behind or pull over and make you squeal like a piggy. Or maybe that’s just me, since I live in a rural southern town that has not yet been clued in to the invention of street lights.

YAY, KB is drinking…let’s handcuff her to a lamppost!

Chestnuts roasted by Guise @ 12/12/2009 11:05 PM

K-town: Nope, I fly without a net, day by day, and let the chips fall where they may.

ericnrosesmom: Yup, it’s vodka…has grown to be my preferred brand.

kb: I can’t wait to join you. I’m going to drink until dawn.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 12/12/2009 11:16 PM

For Chritmas, I used to get my mom those fancy Disney snowglobes that cost about 60 bucks from a Disney store, but they were awesome.

I watched “The Flight Before Christmas.” on CBS and it was the most boring and crappiest Christmas special I’ve ever seen. Even Norm McDonald as a flying squirrel/chipmunk thing couldn’t save it. It’s also nice to know that Prancer is a deadbeat dad. Animation sucked, too.

Chestnuts roasted by King JLA @ 12/12/2009 11:29 PM

Never been a big fan of vodka. Give me a good margarita any day of the week.

Chestnuts roasted by ericnrosesmom @ 12/12/2009 11:32 PM

Here, have some non-alcoholic eggnog.

My Christmas shopping is almost done, except for a few random relatives and SS X-E. Now I just have you folks and my half gallon of nog.

And to you H. P. Lovecraft fans out there, have any of you noticed the strong parallels between the moral/ending of Polar Express and the story Azathoth?

Chestnuts roasted by PlantToymaker @ 12/12/2009 11:41 PM

I wish it would start snowin right now! I want an ALL OUT BLIZZARD!!! But I’ll settle for a decent amount of snow.
Happy SNT ya’ll!

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/12/2009 11:48 PM

Have you never been in an all out blizzard? My guess is no.

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 12/12/2009 11:51 PM

How about getting this man a cell phone for Christmas? Or a spare tire and a jack at least…

Chestnuts roasted by Eric M @ 12/13/2009 12:00 AM

Holiday SNT FTW! This season’s just zipping by at a nice clip, wouldn’t you say?

I just watched Mixed Nuts for the first time, I have to add it to my list of favorite Christmas flicks. It’s always nice to have a cynical, non-snowy movie…Now I’m watching one of the new Sandra Lee Christmas specials, and it’s cheesier than a Hickory Farms basket. It’s the most wooooonderful time of the year…

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 12/13/2009 12:04 AM

Matt, sucks to hear you had such a crappy time tonight. Good thing you got home ok though! Hopefully the car’s not too screwed up either

By the way, to whoever posted that betamaxmas link in the previous thread…THANK YOU! I’ve had that thing on all day! Guise, if you’re really getting into all the classic American Christmas stuff, you need to check it out; got loads of streaming 80s cartoon and sitcom Xmas specials. Saw the Perfect Strangers special; and the He-Man / She-Ra Xmas special too!!! (Matt’s got a hilarious review on hre somewhere about it too!)

Oh, and Guise: Xmas in London sucks! ;) Barely any good cheesy Xmas specials on TV here!! (or maybe I just keep missing them….)
